Undecided on issues from covid to race to health care and the president s answers last night twisted, if not defied the truth. I thought you were doing a good job with the Pandemic Response until about may 1st then you took your foot off the gas pedal. Why did you throw vulnerable like me under the bus . You have yet to address and acknowledge that theres been a race problem in america. So if you go i hope theres not a race problem. Theres none with me. Should preexisting conditions which obama care brought to from yuition be remo. Please stop and let me finish my question, sir. Much more on the virus and the president s town hall ahead, first, though, a brilliant sdaft or the gulf coast. Hurricane sally crept ashore at 5 45 a. M. Eastern time this morning hitting landfall as a category 2 hurricane. The storm is in no hurry and thats a problem. Slow speed means more unrelenting rain. More treecracking winds and storm surge. Lets get straight to our correspondents on the gulf coast. Gary tuchman is in pensacola, florida and ed lavandera is in alabama. 30 miles to the east we are in coastal florida, this hurricane is still roaring and sally is still dumping rain and has been dumping since 2 00 central time and we are getting Tropical Storm force winds with the hurricane gusts. Behind me is a restaurant and the roof is gone. The tarp on top is flapping. You see the yellow car over there, its kind of a sports car golf cart that you drive around resort areas and that used to be behind the restaurant and it gives you an idea of the force of this wind. This is Pensacola Beach on santa rosa island. This is a Barrier Island just south of the city of pensacola. Pensacola has 53,000 people year round, but lots of tourists who come this town of year to enjoy the september weather and hope they dont get stuck with the hurricane, theyve gotten stuck with the hurricane and the big problem with the hurricane as you alluded to, its been going on for so long and we havent gotten an update, but as of two hours ago we had 24 inches of rain, john. Thats two feet of rain. Thats just an incredible amount and its caused a lot of flooding on this Barrier Island and its even worse across the bridge in the city of pensacola. We cant get there because we made a commitment with the tourists and year round residents and they closed all of the bridges so were stuck here until this hurricane comes to an end, but the flooding is a serious problem. Emergency authorities are right now conducting water rescues in the pensacola area and north of there here in escambia county. Theyre hoping for the best. Right now we have no reports of casualties and thats the good news and what we learn as we cover hurricanes like hurricane laura, it sometimes takes hours, days and weeks to count up casualties at this point. No casualties at this point. Communication tends to be disrupted as much as everything else. Gary, stay safe. You and your crew stay safe and well keep in touch. Lets move on to mobile, alabama, what are you seeing . Reporter john, just a short while ago it was like the faucet had been turned off on the rainstorms brought by Hurricane Sally. So even though the winds are still relatively strong and steady, the rainfall, for the most part seems to have cleared out of this area here in Mobile County and now this gives the emergency crews a chance to begin surveying damage and getting out a little bit more freely into the hardesthit areas of alabama which should include Baldwin County and the gulf shores area. Anything really on the east side of mobile bay where the eye of Hurricane Sally came ashore about five, six hours ago, and that is going to be the area of great concern. We know that there are a number of downed power lines, trees and road closures and that sort of thing. So if we do not need to be out, please do not get out in the elements right now because it is still treacherous right there and as weve seen many times in the past and as emergency officials repeatedly say it is oftentimes after the storm where they see the worst injuries and the deaths pile up. So that is of grave concern and we are just now getting to the chance to begin to be able to begin surveying some of the damage and we know in some areas it will be quite extensive. John . Ed lavandera on the ground in mobile. Keep in touch, bring us the latest as you find more. Mississippi at one point at risk of taking a direct hit appear to have been spared by the worst and the mississippi Emergency Management agency. Colonel, thank you for your time today. I say spared a direct hit. What are you hearing from counties around the state . Significant damage or do you think youve mostly dodged this . We came out really good on this one. Im actually in Jackson County which is our most southeastern extreme county right up to the alabama border and monitored this through the night last night. We did have some trees go down and some localized air flooding, but nothing like what our neighbors to the east are experiencing right now. We prepared for the worst and came out well on this one, thank goodness. Thank goodness is right and our thoughts and prayers are with those as sally makes its way. You have downed trees and high winds. Do you have a significant number of people without power . We had just this morning just under 11,000 without power and thats due primarily to the wind bands that we got on the western side of the storm and its better than being on the eastern side, but woe did hae did have r outages and we had shelters open since monday and we had some evacuations began. Shelters began to close. We had about 120 people in shelters, so we had to prepare. Power should be restored by the end of the day today and we are prepared to send resources over to alabama and florida if we need to. Thats always the interesting question. Neighbors band together. They would help you. Is that power crews . Is that medical crews . Is that all of the above . All of the above. Typically what my agency gets involved in is high water rescue, search and rescue and coordinate National Guard to support with specific highwater extractions or route clearance. The utility crews typically manage that, but again, we had a lot of resources staged down to the south to respond to our evacuations should the storm hit us like we prepared so we can very easily send resources through the east and we can do that and all of the states have those reciprocal agreements in place. That is one of the heartwarming things that happens when Something Like this happens, neighbors, even neighboring states help each other out. You mentioned 120 people in shelters. How many were you prepared for had this taken a different path and what were the covidrelated precautions put in place since youre strong deal with this in the middle of a pandemic. It has been quite a year. It has been quite a year and covid and as it relates to shelters and operating shelters, theyre not only for hurricane, but for tornadoes and the flooding that we had earlier this year has been the biggest problem. If you talk to any Emergency Managers across the nation thats been the biggest challenge. Were prepared to receive more people than we actually had. Starting out, we did have con grow gant shelters that were open. We required everyone in those shelters to wear a ppe and wear a mask and sanitize with the appropriate social distancing and it means having had more shelters available. We were prepared to do that last monday where those Evacuation Centers were. So we were prepared to house them and the pandemic does complicate shelter operations. Colonel greg michel, thank you for your perspective and well keep in touch as the next few days play out. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you, sir. Lets check in on the situation in the ground right now. Chad myers is in the cnn weather center. Chad, where is sally headed . Headed to dothan, alabama. It will move across the florida peninsula and on back to alabama again and back through georgia. The real threat is still some wind and were still gusting to 80 Miles Per Hour and it is only moving forward at 5 Miles Per Hour and thats better than two and three that we had yesterday and theres the threat of some of these storms as they come on shore to produce a small tornado, but it can happen. Everywhere that you see white. A lot of it is from mexico, and anywhere where you see white has picked up 20 inches of rain or more, and it is posted all of the way back into parts of the Central Florida panhandle and theres pensacola and all of the way through here. Panama city and these big storms could rotate and every single one of those can rotate as we work our way into the rest of the day. Winds are still gusting to around 80 Miles Per Hour there at the Naval Air Station last hour. So theres your storm. Its a category 1. It will move to the north and the northeast and eventually parts of alabama, into georgia and the carolinas, but by the time it gets to the carolinas it will be a 30 mile per hour storm. So, yes, it will be windy, but the problem is even in here in mississippi, alabama, and parts of georgia, if the ground is so saturated a 40 mile per hour wind, john, can bring down the tree for sure and thats the forecast. Anywhere where you see red here, somewhere greater than six inches of rainfall still to come on top of what the places down south have already seen. You can stay on top of this one, chad myers, we will keep in touch over the next few days. Why would you downplay a pandemic that is known to disproportionately harm low income families in minority communities. Well, i didnt downplay it. In many ways i up played it in certain action. Thats the president telling a voter last night that he up played the impact of the coronavirus. We know thats a lie. We know that not because i say it. Because the president said it. He told bob woodward that he deliberately played down. He didnt want to scare the American People. He told bob woodward it was scary stuff. He told you something quite different. Lets walk through some of the timeline here of how we got here and how the president did not up play the coronavirus this just the raw numbers. Remember, he Start Talking to woodward in february when there were a few cases. We have lived through this the past serve months aven months 6 cases and we now know from the woodward book it was january 28th the president security adviser this will be the National Security challenge of your presidency. Thats on january 28th. The White House Task force created the next day. The president did in late january announced the partial travel ban. He did take that early action. That was important. February 7th he tells bob woodward, go back and look at the record. He wasnt saying that in public. He was saying something quite different. On february 7th, and inside the white house theyre beginning to realize they need to do more. Theyre still not telling you the truth. Lets move on into march now. The president announced the partial ban on travel into the United States from europe on march 11th and National Emergency on march 13th. National emergency on march 13th. Ill go back in time, hes telling bob woodward. Its out of control in china and it could be distributed airborne Trance Mission and it is not, until more than a month later he declares a National Emergency and two weeks to start the spread by the white house. An executive order in march allowing the president to use the defense production act for things like masks and allowing it. He didnt implement it then and he gave himself the authority to do so. On march 27th at the end of the month he did invoke the defense production act for General Motors and ventilators on that issue. Lets move into april and may. February 7th, deadly stuff. March, april, the end of april the blueprint to ramp up testing and its deadly stuff in early february. This is when they start to realize they have a testing problem months later. Millions of cases confirmed here and operation warp speed announced middle of may. It was deadly stuff on 7th and vaccine ramp up in the middle of may and we hit 100,000 confirmed deaths in the end of may and into the summer, 150,000 confirmed deaths, and we still have a testing problem. Lags in testing and problems with the tests turning this around and 5 million confirmed cases in the end of august. He did just the opposite, but when pressed on this last night he said grade my response, ill give myself an a , thank you. No. I think we did a great job. You were saying it was going to disappear. It is going to disappear. Its going to disappear. Could you have done more to stop it . I dont think so. Joining me now our chief Political Correspondent dana bash and dr. Amy comptonphillips. Ill start with you. The president was asked could he have done anything more to stop it . He says, i dont think so. What do you think . Well, i think that he was actually gifted with the pandemic playbook and an infrastructure in the government that actually knew how to handle a pandemic and unfortunately that was defunded and thrown out in the fall before the pandemic hit, and so they were starting from ground zero. They had to reinvent everything and i absolutely think we would have been well ahead of the game and we would not be approaching 200,000 americans dead if theyd actually used the resources they were gifted with before coming in. And dana, to the politics of this, dr. Comptonphillips lays out the policy and the Public Health, the responsibility of the presidency challenge to act when youre telling bob woodward this is deadly stuff, act then, dont wait and wait and wait. To the question why did you play it down . Those were the president s own words. Thats not fake news. The president told that and it is recorded to bob woodward. I want to play what he was telling bob woodward and what he was telling the American People. Lets start with bob woodward. It goes through air, bob. Thats always tougher than the touch. Its deadlier than your strenuous flus. I wanted to always play it down. This thing is a killer. If youre the wrong person you dont have a is chance. Its a plague and so easily transmissible you wouldnt even believe it. Sober stuff there from the president to bob woodward including i want to play it down. Heres what the president in the same timeframe was telling the American People. When it gets a little warmer it miraculously goes away. The risk to the American People remains very low. We have it so well under control. Were testing everybody that we need to test and were finding very little problem. Well essentially have a flu shot for this in a fairly quick manner. One day its like a miracle it will disappear. We dont want the cure worse than the problem. We want to get our country open. It is striking the president in his own words telling bob woodward one thing and telling the people consistently and repeatedly something different, something at odds with the fact he was being told in his briefings. The president lies to us every day. And im sorry, ill just say it that way. Its different when youre face to face with a voter. It was really remarkable to watch this president with actual voters last night asking him incredibly tough questions. Remarkable because we really havent seen him outside of the bubble of people asking him questions largely from friendly reporters in interviews and from the White House Press corps who, you know, do their best to try to follow up, but it doesnt always happen. In this particular case these voters were given the chance to not just ask a question, but hold his feet to the fire in a way that he cant make them a foil in the way he can do with members of the press corps. Its much, much more difficult. For many reasons, not the least of which is that theyre feeling the effects of what theyre asking about out in the real world and in places that will determine whether or not he will be reelected. So thats that was really remarkable to watch. The other thing ill just say, john, you played a retrospective of all of the things the president said publicly which flew in the face of what he said privately. Its not just retrospective. He did the same thing last night. We are still in the middle of a pandemic and he is still saying that its just going to go away. Hes still saying waiters dont like wearing masks, whatever that means. Its happening as we speak which is still given everything we now know about the virus reprehensible. Lets listen to that, dr. Comptonphillips, since she made the point. The president did once wear a mask to be photographed at walter reed and did in the Briefing Room once hold upon a mask and says its patriotic and he has mocked since. There are lots of people that think masks are not good. Who are those people . Ill tell you who those people are, waiters. They come over and they serve you and they have a mask and i saw it the other day where they were serving me and theyre playing with the mask. Im not blaming them. Im just saying what happens. Dr. Comptonphillips, besides the president s waiter apparently, are there people who say masks are not good besides the political supporters . Honestly, john, there are people that are out there who say the earth is flat . Who do you believe the people who say the earth is flat or do you believe the science and evidence that believe the earth is round. We had to figure out whether or not masks protected people. Initially back months ago we did not know that. As soon as we learned it, we started saying masks work. Masks not only, by the way, stop transmission to your neighbor so they help take care of other, but now we know that even cloth masks can help protect the people wearing them because they lower the amount of droplets if you do get expose, you inhale and people who wear masks are much more likely to have less impactful infections and to have asymptomatic infections and thats the science and thats the data. Waiters do not determine the science so wear a mask. Amen to that. Dr. Comptonphillips and dana bash, i appreciate the Fact Checking and sadly we have to do it every day. Much needed rain could bring some relief to firefighters out west. Those firefighters working tirelessly to contain what you see right there. Deadly wildfires. In california 25 people have been killed since last month, homes reduced to embers as millions of acres burn. Cnns Stephanie Elam is in monrovia where the bobcat fire has burned over 41,000 acres. Reporter we just got an update on the bobcat fire, it is over 44,300 and some acres. The firefighters have been out here all night, bulldozing lines to make sure doing protective burns and you may see the sun in the weird, neon orange glow and this is what happens when theres so much smoke in the ash here. Ash is flying down on us. It is just really bad, breathing conditions here and without any rain on the horizon in california, its looking like its going to continue to be very dry and a very dangerous situation here. Overall, theres more than 16,600 firefighters that are battling blazes here in california and since august 15th when we saw this california fire activity really elevate, thats when weve seen the 25 deaths and the loss of those 4200 structures and theyre very much concerned about the red flag warnings still in place especially with the northeastern part of california. Obviously, that is a big concern as well and the firefighters were very defensive about mt. Wilson which is very important around here because theres an observatory and there is a lot of broadcasting equipment out there for a lot of the local stations here. They were defending that over the last couple of days and the firefighters have been successful with that which obviously is big news here and just protecting these homes, but the fight is not over and we look at the blazes and the fact that it will be hot today and tomorrow means it will be a long, long fire season and the fires seem to get bigger and more dangerous each year as were dealing with this Climate Change here, john. Stephanie elam, grateful for the live reporting and your stamina and grateful for the work of those Fire Fighters and First Responders in the fight out there and well keep in touch. Thank you very much. Now to another important story. New video of a story we told you about yesterday, Michael Caputo claiming that scientists at the cdc, the centers for Disease Control, are in his words working against President Trump. Nick valencia has this important new reporting. Nick, explain the context here why Michael Caputo made these comments and how we obtained this video. It is upsetting to see these comments posted to social media and even more upsetting who Michael Caputo who posted this in a Facebook Live event over the weekend went on a conspiracyladen rant saying that scientists were trying to undermine President Trump. This video as i mentioned was first posted to Facebook Live and edited for brevity. It is so shocking we want you to hear it in caputos own words. They these people cannot cannot allow america to get better nor can they allow america to hear good news. It must be all bad news from now until the election. Frankly, ladies and gentlemen, thats sadition. They are sacrificing lives in order to beat donald trump. Ladies and gentlemen, thats d sadition and it is also call it what you will, but when they let somebody get sick and die theres one word for that. Throughout the pandemic ive been speaking to multiple sources at the centers for Disease Control and prevention and theyve been telling me that sometimes theyve been led to believe or feel as though that theyre part of this, quote, unquote, deep state or this conspiracy that donald trump traffics in, that theres this deep state working against him and i want you to hear caputo in this Facebook Live rant say exactly that. The fears that these cdc scientists and Public Health professionals and career professionals working on important Science Behind the scenes and feeling theylike th a part of the deep state in what oversees them. The partisan democrats, the conjugal media and the scientists, the deep state scientists want america sick through november. They cannot afford for us to have any good news before november because theyre already losing. Donald trump right now, if the election were held today would win. Michael caputo is a political appointee by President Trump and he was sent to hhs, health and human services, to help clean up the message and control the message about whats happening with this pandemic. Very shortly after he was appointed in april and around may, thats when his political interference according to multiple sources at the cdc, thats when the meddling began and they said over the course of the last several months theres been multiple instances where theres been attempts of political interference into the science reports and reviews. Specifically, they point to happened what, a story that we broke on cnn where testing recommendations for the cdc were changed without taking into consideration doctors recommendations and topdown orders and we want to be very clear. Its coming from President Trump to be delivered by hhs and relayed on to cdc. They say other instances include when they posted safely returning to will skoos, those guidelines there was an introductory comment posted to the website and we want to be clear to those watching the cdc has effectively lost control of its website and when i ask the sources and senior officials at the cdc if they have any belief or confidence that this type of political meddling will stop and they have no confidence it will stop in the runup to the election and what they do want to make clear here very quickly is theres been accusations in reporting that their sacred morbidity and mortality weekly reports have been altered and they say they want to be clear. There have been attempts to the sacred reports that are considered Gold Standard for this agency, while there have been attempts by hhs theyve been unsuccessful so far and there are career professionals trying to fight right now to bubble wrap this agency from the Trump Administration. John . Its remarkable that in the middle of a pandemic that you have this political interference that makes people doubt what theyre hearing from their government. Nick valencia, keep up the good reporting. President trump claims everybody has stocks. The fact is, though, the vast majority owned by rich.
