One who needs them. It is still early on in this coronavirus pandemic. In america alone there are families already planning a thousand and 67th funerals. Many of those funerals wont be held, at least not for a long time. Many of these families cant find solace in the arms of loved ones because they cant be close to them. For those who died, many of them died alone. Families are not allowed in hospitals or near the virus. The ones closest to them before during their last breaths are the doctors and nurses and ems workers. Right now they are overwhelmed. For everyday the nation is slow f to get ventilators or debating the need to stay home, these soldiers are working tirelessly around the clock to save lives. Tthe New York Times describin a doctor performing a chest compression on a man in her 80s. All suffering from coronavirus and all who died. Doctors and nurses quote struggle to make do with a few dozen ventilators. The code for when a patient is on the verge of death comes several times a shift. Some died inside the emergency room while waiting for a bed. A refrigerated truck have been stationed outside to hold the bodies of the dead. In this hospital, at least 13 people have died in just 24 hours. The sick, well, they are too ill to tell you their stories. Doctors can like this one. The president saying things like we are going to be fine and everything is fine and from our perspective, everything is not fine. I dont have the support that i need and even just the materials that i need physically to take care of my patients and it is america. We are supposed to be a first world country. Pleas like that of front line healthcare workers to be alarmed. I am going to talk to two people who put their lives everyday on this pandemic, one in the east coast and one in the west coast. Dr. Suzanne hill, dr. Hill, lets start with you, you are in new york city, there are nearly 18,000 cases there, tell us what you are experiencing. Right now we are experiencing some of the same things that everyone across the country is experiencing, we are all anxious and we are worried and we are worried about our patients and families and each other. Right now things are still changing on hour to hour basis as we brace for whats coming ahead the next few weeks. Dr. Ottish, what are you seeing . It changes day by day and hour by hour. We have to create Surge Capacity within our hospitals and create icu s in places where we cared for different patients before. We are mobilizing teams or ready for what we know is coming. And dr. Hills, do you say you expect to get the coronavirus . I think everybody here in new york is at highrisk for exposure. I think all of our healthcare workers feel like it is almost inevitable that well be exposed so that is right now the situation that we are dealing with and we are doing our best to keep our patients and ourselves protecting and we want to be able to be here for patients when they get sick. We want to be standing when people meet us and right now we are doing Everything Possible to keep ourselves and the teams that we work to be healthy. And dr. Awdish, youre in detroit, wayne county. Wayne county has the seventh highest number of confirmed cases in the united states. You must be confronting this reality as well. How do you prepare for the possibility of getting this . You know i care for my first covid19 positive patient ten days ago. I did all the procedures we do to protect ourselves with personal equipment, we are willing to go into these rooms day after day. We just want to be protected and we want to be able to protect our patients and our families and our colleagues. We worriley less about ourselve. We dont want to transmit it who did not choose this work. And dr. Awdish go on dr. Hills. No, i fully agree. I think our priority is our patients and we are all working together across the country to try to think about creative ways that we can make protective equipment lasting as long as possible or Work Together to try to keep healthcare providers. How are you doing that dr. Hills, what are creative ways you and your colleagues making protective equipment, or is enough . What we are thinking is right now we are so grateful for everybody who is staying inside and helping us to slow the spread of the virus. I think thats going to be ultimately the most powerful tool that we have to prevent the spread and help conserve the resources that we have to protect ourselves and patients. When we think about two or three or four weeks from now or eight weeks from now, given the equipment that we have now, we dont know where we are going to be in a couple of weeks. There are guidelines from the cdc and what to do in a critical shortage of equipment and suggestions that are out there considering to resterilizing masks and using others not so protective equipment like bandannas that we know is not effective against the virus. We are not in that situation but the way things are looking we got to think about what are we going to do a couple of weeks when we hit a crisis here if we dont get the equipment we need. Yes, you could very much be in that situation. Dr. Awdish you tweeted a heartbreaking message about how you made personal preparations for the quote, break the glass scenario. Explain what you are talking about and what led you to take these actions. We are taking care of these patients all understand that things can change on a dime. You cant get two or three doctors together where they dont start saying okay, u. Justo you know this is the plan, this is where i want my kids to go to and what people think of their pets and security, we develop this ritual and decontamination when we remove all of our clothing in the hospital and attempt to sterilize ourselves because physicians and nurses and respiratory therapies, theyre sleeping in spare bedrooms and garages and basement trying to protect their family. No, we have heard so many stories of people, they go into their garages and they strip off their clothes and head straight for the shower and have to make a decision how they behave at home. Do they separate themselves. Dr. Hills, we are learning some hospitals are weighing whether they make changes to our dnr policies, do not resuscitate policies as part of the way to reduce risks to their staff. Do your hospital have that conversation . The situation is changing everyday. Looking at other countries, where these things are happening like italy for example. We have to look at those countries and experiences and think thats something that could be happening here. So i think what we are seeing happening elsewhere in the world is really very educational for us and we have to Pay Attention to what is going on in places like iran and italy, of the way they are having to manage this disease and the difficult decisions they have to make. When we look at china, tremendous wealth of information thats coming out of china. They publish that information on a collection of 72,000 cases last month. Those experiences of what is happening and whats going on and how theyre shorthahandling things you should be watching and seeing and really taking to heart and learning from and this is a pandemic situation thats affecting every country. We are all in this together. And we need to really watch whats happening around the world. Look, thank you guys for being our eyes and ears. Well continue to check in with you to see how this is going. As you say this is changing daytoday. Dr. Awdish and dr. Hills. Thank you both. The truth behind the drugs that you have been hearing so much about. I will talk to the white houses trade adviser, Peter Navarro, why he says it is expected. Some say mardi gras may be the blame. You can see the numbers are up on the right side of your screen, more than 75,000 cases. It is a gray milestone today that there were more than a thousand deaths and there have been so far. New york is really the epicenter with more than half of all confirmed cases. Governor andrew cuomo talked about the challenges that are facing hospitals there. He applauded the healthcare workers on the front line. Those Healthcare Professionals who are dealing the virus they did not understand. They still dont understand. Theyre there working and many of them seven days a week. Yes, we are tired. But, look at what others among us have to do and the challenge they are under and how they are stepping up. Who am i to complain about being tired when so many people are doing such heroic efforts . Tomorrow the house is expected to vote on a 2 trillion stimulus bill which was approved last night in the senate. This is a bill delivers billions of dollars to hospitals and sends money to impacted workers. Nancy pelosi says she expects a strong bipartisan vote for this bill. The navy will test 5,000 sailors aboard the u. S. 23 sailors tested positive for coronavirus aboard that aircraft carrier. Doctors are searching for answers with so many critically ill patients packed in the hospital coast to coast. I want to bring in elizabeth cohen. L lets talk about two of these drugs. One is chloroquine and one is getting plasma treatments. Whats the truth and promise behind these . Lets take chloroquine first, it is a hydroxychloroquine, it is a less toxic one to think. The president has been enthusiastic. When you talk to doctors what they say is not so fast. We have to study this and we dont know if it works in patients with coronavirus. They say look, we are not going to get enthusiastic until we see the results of the trial. Luckily they are speeding up and hoping to have answers in weeks or months and not in years. You mention plasma donation, it is simple. Once you rekoer frcover coronav. You have answers. Theyll take the antibodies who recovered and give it to someone who is still stick. It has worked for other diseases and it is unclear if it will work here. What do you do when you are not a confirmed coronavirus case . Thats an excellent question. I have talked to some doctors who for their trials are interested in finding those people because they want as many people they can get who recovered. It depends on which trial you are talking about and the rules may be different. Some places are going to say no, i want you to already have the test and i dont want to test you because we dont have enough test. Theyll use people with confirm ld test or can you go and roll up your sleeves and say hey, test me, i think i may have had it. They can miss a lot of people. Elizabeth, thank you so much for walking us through that, we are curious of those possible treatments. I am going to talk to our director of infectious diseases, doctor, thank you so much for being with us. I wonder which avenue you find promising. Well, it is a great question. Right now it is really one big body of work. We dont know if these existing drugs are going to be effective or how effective or whether theyre best used to prevent infection or treat people early until the course of disease or treat people late. The same thing is true of this antibody treatment, we dont know what its place will be. There are also new trugs that have yet to be used in Clinical Trials that are coming online thats not existing drugs and they may be proven more effective. You need to identify people who may have antibodies but there are a ton of people who are assumed coronavirus and recovered but they never officially tested. Some trialists maybe willing to enroll those patients and test them to see if they have antibodies against coronavirus and if they do, they can probably use their plasma in their studies. Is that the number that the u. S. Need to achieve as well and does Everyone Needs to be tested . We are learning not Everybody Needs to be tested but we are also facing a situation where we clearly dont have this test capacity that we need, it will be devastating to have an outbreak. Our Testing Capacity is not where it needs to be and not clear we need to test every Single Person but well learn more about that as time goes by. You signed onto a letter for healthcare tennessee, you were asking for a stayathome order. The governor has closed bars and restaurants and gyms and fitness center. Is that enough for you or do you think tennessee needs to go further . Well, i think it is a great start. We look at those stories coming out of new york. Devastating or detroit and we are haeeading in the direction having more cases. We are near a thousand cases in tennessee and over 3,000 cases in nashville. This virus needs to be slowed down. I think a shelter in place, safer at home policy is enacted across the state is where we need to be heading if we are going to flatten the curve. All right, dr. Aronoff, thank you very much. Be sure to join cnn tonight to get your answers, dr. Fauci and bill gates will join dr. Sanjay gupta tonight coronavirus facts and fears. Why dont americans have the equipment they need . It could be late fall before the city reopens and getting back to normal. Criminal cas cases in california are doubling every three or four days. If anything we have learned in this crisis that we have to be prepared and as i have shared with you this crisis is not over in the first explosion. Until there is a feedback seen and we have drugs that can treat this, we may see a second or even a third explosion of this as we do in the flu season. We may see that in the fall as early as october or november. Garcetti did see the stayathome order appears to be working. An explosion of coronavirus cases in louisiana, additional 500 positive cases and 18 deaths just since yesterday. The outbreak in louisiana is the worst in the world in terms of trajecto trajectory. This is the disaster that defines our generation. Northbound li new orleans is the epicenter in the state and some are saying last months mardi gras is to blame. Diane gallagher is joining us. The greatest party in the world was a perfect incubator. Thats kind of what they are looking at brianna are those incubation period. A first case of louisiana was a person tested positive 13 days after fat tuesday. Since then they have been placed other people with positives that were in new orleans for mardi gras now. These are serious, it is something thats starting to grow among health officials. Take a listen. We had over a million and a half people in the city including International Visitors all attending parade dailies. I think thats obviously probably an issue for what we have seen in new orleans. New orleans is seeing a lot of these cases right now. Almost half or a little more half of the deaths in louisiana are from where new orleans is. According to the governor there, this is what we are seeing the biggest issues when it comes to medical shortages as well. They need about a thousand ventilators, just to keep up with the patients that are in the area. Now theyre bringing Homeless Individuals who live in new orleans into hotels right now. There is a stayathome order in effect for about a week now. The attempt to get people to take it seriously, food banks are running out of food. This is starting to happen across the entire state. Outbreaks of covid19 where they are attempting to tell people to stay away from each other and the basics we have been telling you for weeks. Theyre trying to keep medical professionals prepared here by bringing in more ppe and icu beds. We are starting to get icu beds. Theyre moving the floors so they can get people away from those affected by the virus and the spread even more. I will tell you to help with that food bank there. New orleans state quarterback drew brees announced hes donating 5 million to assist with the healthcare and several food bank. The governor is thanking him on twitter. They need federal help as well for their citizens. Dianne gallagher. Thank you so much. Are states getting closer to get what they need. As more patients are coming to hospitals, you heard it from louisiana. I will speak to the supply chain, well ask him where things stand. You wouldnt accept an incomplete job from anyone else. So why accept it from your allergy pills . Flonase relieves your worst symptoms which most pills dont. Get allinone allergy relief for 24 hours, with flonase. No. Uh uh, no way. Come on. No. No. N. Ni ni, no no only discover has no annual fee on any card. As the Senate Unanimously passed the biggest 2 trillion stimulus. This is a huge jump from less than 300,000 jobs. It is the most since the government began keeping track of this back in the 1960s. With me is trade advisor Peter Navarro. Welcome peter, i am not going to ask you about that. I watched your fox interview earlier and i know you are only talking about the supply chain because i know your leading up effort is fema. Masks and all of these things and getting them out to hospitals and healthcare workers, it is a huge issue right n right now. Amen lets listen to what doctors are saying including louisiana and new york, two of the most hardest hit areas. We are having a large demand in respiratory failures. We are working tirelessly to think out of the box. Shame on the federal government and others who can help us. If we dont get this in time, we have time to prepare, we need to prepare for the worse and hope for the best. New orleans we are using half of our ventilators already. Unless we get additional supplies, well not be able to care for everyone who needs it. We are having to decide whether people who are doing those procedures get the best kind of masks or not. We are having to decide whether or not people in the e. R. Have access to masks. Thats insane. We are a country that has a lot of opportunities to make sure this does not happen. It is really stunning. Peter, look, we know you are working with the private sector. Workers can make that into non surgical mask and gm is partnering with them to have all of that good news. Why do you have prisons competing with the Postal Service and hospitals and kentucky and competing with illinois and louisiana fema, the va, in order to get a lot of these supplies. The government is not stepping in of the purchase and allocation of this. I reject that theory of them not stepping in or stepping out. I work with the full power of private enterprise but hourly i am working with hhs and fema which we have a partnership to make sure that we are surging the protective equipment we need for Healthcare Professionals and ventilators in realtime. And it is a triple track in terms of the kinds of things we are doing. We got hhs working to get into the stockpile and out of the stockpile. We got fema efforts going onto distribute things and requiring new materials both in the u. S. And around the world. My office is also helping to coordinate with the power of enterprise to mobilize and repurpose factory around the country to get what we need and we certainly have been working very hard to search for equipment for new york and seattle and detroit and chicago and seattle and california, personally direct shipments there over the last several weeks. There will be pictures of people or whatever garbage bags or whatever. Thats going to be the exception. Look, i am telling you let me say one last thing, hang on. It is easy to find out accounts from all of these states. Give me 20 seconds, maam. Lets not sensationallize this crisis at a time we create more anxiety or panic behavior with people. So, please as you report this crisis, please keep in mind that to the extent that it is done and makes our job here harder and Healthcare Professionals harder, please. Ask me your question. I am not sensationalizing anything. I am tracking and governors are saying that their states are calling up these suppliers and fema already purchased everything. They are sort of siloed from things being allocated and coordinated and theyre trying to spend all of this time and energy trying to acquire some of these things and they cant get it. There is no way theyre able to get anything where we have seen in new york and other states as well. We have seen it in the prison system as well. I want to ask you about lower tech ventilators. You talked about some of these factories peter, i need to ask you, this is important. These factories you talked about that are going to be making ventilators that normally dont. There are lower tech ventilators, this is something that can be used for patients like the oxilator, thats a company that had a thousand of them and they have not been contact ed to make more. Are you doing your best to get Surgery Centers where they have these and not being used . The short answer is yes. We are getting calls pulling in everyday and we are moving gloves and suits and face masks and respiratories and all sorts of things. If you have something brianna, forward to my office and i will be happy to get on. We turn things around in an hour and get things on plane in less than a day. All right, all this stuff is in like the New York Times and the work post. I wi the washington post. Lets talk about price gauching. Masks for 30 cents and now theyre going for 3 bucks to 15 bucks. How quickly can you stop it from happening . Last night Health Services published the last thing we need is lock and load and crack down on price gauchers. That was 15 types of equipment including face masks and ventilators. The president signed several days ago with attorney again board and before that the president signed a production act. The department of justice to get Law Enforcement teams out there to crack down on hoarders. I have a simple message to anybody who got large quantities of anything that the American People need right now and if you are sitting on that and trying to charge high prices, well come and get you. Get it out in the market at a fair price, this behavior will not be tolerated. If you sell it at a high price today, well find you when this is all done. Stop hoarding. President trump will not tolerate that and attorney general barr will not tolerate that. Have you warn the president how much bigger your job and the problems of the supply chain gets if restricted measures are relaxed too soon. We talked everyday and the president is trying to balance all the competing he needs. Please remember two things. President trump was the first world leader to take the action early when he pulled out that flights from china. The chinese did not tell us early to mid december that there was a crisis of human to human transmission with a new novel coronavirus. That has set the world back six weeks so we are dealing with this issue everyday. We have a full force of the federal government. We have a full power in fairness the government was clearly ill prepared for this. This is not something that, you know, these viruses happen and how awful they are. Your government knew in the summer when they did a drill if this happens, this would be a problem and there was a lack of preparation which was why we have you onto talk about the y supply chain. Looks like it is going to be about 200,000 ventilators and what experts are saying there could be a million needed. Are you going to be able to meet that demand . So first of all is the president aware of relaxing restricted measures that means let me bring you up on the history here of what we inherited. In 09 when the Obama Administration pete. Peter, why are you wasting your time on this and not solving the problem that we have. You made the claim of not being prepared. Run the tape, we just heard that. I am asking you are we able to get to a million ventilators. I am trying to respond and you keep on interrupting me. Lets have this conversation. You keep on talking in my ears and you wont let me talk. May i speak, please . Will you answer the question . Can you get to a million ventilators . That was not the question. You started by saying this administration was ill prepared. Let me explain to the American People. This whole stockpile which was engineered for basically 100year flood and we got here with the coronavirus to 500 years flood. Thats the problem. We have woken up to the fact that we did not have adequate material in our stockpiles and more importantly all of our supply chains is spread out in the world at a time 10 out of Top Countries providing us with pharmaceuticals are imposing export restrictions. We are running as fast as we can to get the people of america what they need and searching for incredible amounts of materials in places like new york as we speak. We are having the most rapid industrial mobilization since world war ii. We are doing the best we can. Dont tell me we were ill prepared for this because he inherited the system of testing and inherited of stockpiles that was inadequate for this and there was plenty of people to the last two administrations who had wake up calls and they went back to sleep. Thats not what we are doing. Well fight this. Well youre wasting everyones time with this. Its 2020. The president was elected in 2016. Can you get to a million ventilators . First of all, that number is way, way, way out. What can you get to . Were going to do our best to get the ventilators we need as quickly as possible, and we have gm and ford repurposing factories. Do you have, like, do you have a projection of how many you can get to . Sending us ventilators. This is the kind of thing. We need a million ventilators. We cant possibly get it. Thats like, wildly over what we would need. We are ramping up production. Thats from the society of Critical Care medicine, peter. Peter, thats from the society of Critical Care medicine. They said, i mean, thats the ceiling but they say thats a possibility. You have to know that. Youre in charge of the ventilators. Thats a ceiling and thats a possibility. Thats like the worst of the worst of the worst case, okay . These are peter. Peter, if you think that speaking in facts and truth is frightening to people, you have a problem. Why do you keep shouting in my ear . I dont understand. Im trying to youre not answering. Watch me answer the question. We got 43,000 ventilators at least that are coming from phillips. We work with gm and vent tech and they may be able to produce as many as 80,000 by the end of the year. Ford and ge are partnering together and eight other companies on our spread sheets where were looking to get them to take up production, whatever inventory theyve got. Were working really hard on this and surging capacity at the places they need it and i think whats important for cnn here is to report this in a sober way, without frightening america, and just having reasonable conversations when somebody from the white house comes on instead of just shouting in our ear. Peter, i will tell you that one way that i think a lot of people are calming down is when they have information and even if its bad news, they know the size of the problem and the government has a plan for it. Thats what were trying to get with you. Youre in charge of the supply chain. Thats the most pressing issue right now. I dont know that i actually have too much of a clearer picture having spoken to you today. If i may, when you lead with, your administration was woefully unprepared, do not expect me to accept that as fact. Its not a fact, okay, but you should at least let me respond to it. Your administration is woefully unprepared, now, how many ventilators do you have . I mean, thats a two parter, right . So ill come on cnn any time. All i ask is civil dialogue where i have the time to speak and that we deal with the facts and just keep asking cnn, its like, this is the crisis of our lives. You will never experience anything like this again in your lifetime, and we need, as a people, to band together and work with this in a unified way, above party, above partisan politics, above ideology and just solve this problem together, and if we get on tv and gets sensationalized and stir people up, it just leads to bad things. Thats my point. We are working as hard as we possibly can with the full force of government and the full force of private enterprise and thats the best we can do right now. We all, as a country, got dealt a bad hand by china. Peter, that is just a waste of time to say that. Im going to leave it there, Peter Navarro. Trying to get our hands around. Why is that a waste of time . Were out of time and thats just ridiculous. Peter navorro, thank you so much. Yes, maam. As we prepare for what is sure to be a long road of uncertainty, its important to stop and remember that behind all of the numbers and the data that we are seeing, that you see there on your screen, there are real people with real stories of how they have been impacted by coronavirus. Megan westbrook is a Military Spouse stationed in italy and she just gave birth several days ago to her newborn son charlie. Hospitals in italy are at their breaking point. They have been for a while and for that reason, her husband was not allowed to be part of the birthing process. There were no visitors at all who were allowed in, and on top of that, she had to have an emergency csection and then she was moved to a private room where she and her baby sat alone for three days without babys dad. Joining us now is megan westbrook. Shes holding charlie. You might be able to see the little tippy top of his cute little head there. Your story, megan, it really is hitting home for a lot of people because for those who are welcoming a newborn into the world, this is supposed to be a time where youre surrounded by family and loved ones. That wasnt the case for you. First off, how are you doing . How is charlie doing . We are both doing really, really well, considering the circumstances. He is gaining weight, and eating and sleeping and were just stuck at Home Learning how to be a family of four. Yeah, thats quite the uptick, i will tell you. Yeah. I wonder, going through this, you learned something a lot of people might not expect about what this process was like. Tell us about your experience. So from the minute i walked into the hospital by myself with all the luggage, till the minute my husband picked me up, i was alone. I do not speak the language here, as hard as i tried, and, you know, i was stuck basically. I couldnt leave. I was with the baby and you have to find inner strength in order to get through Something Like that all by yourself. You dont speak the language. You have translators there, but they are holding the patient, translator, who was holding my hand the whole time, so thank god that they were there and the mid wives and the doctors were amazing, but you have to find something within yourself to get through Something Like that by yourself, and not have one of the points you make for people, theres a lot of people in your situation and theyll be all over the world, but you have made a point that people can do this. You know, this is tough, but you found a Silver Lining in it in sort of, i guess, staying in with your baby for a few days. Tell us about that and what you want mothers who must be very scared. What do you want them to know . I was the same way. I was terrified. I cried many tears, but i actually called it our little love bubble for three or four days. We did not leave the room. We slept in the same room, ate in the same room. I was able to have that alone time that i needed as a new mom to really connect with my baby, and, you know, learn Little Things about him in those first few
