John you talk about the cars getting down the road and difficulty of getting duck boats down the road for patriots parade but on top of that how about the people. Thousands of people who would typically be out here to watch the patriots go by on those duck boats. Cant sit on these benches. Those are benches under that pile of snow. The city really is doing the very best that they can to try to clear this parade route and clear some of the snow off the sidewalks so that people can safely line the route because the mayor has Just Announced that the plan to have this parade kickoff tomorrow at 11 00 is in fact still the plan. It does come with some precautions that are being taken. For instance the mayor says there will be no rally at city hall. The end of the parade route. Thats typically the tradition in boston. Its too cold and messy and dangerous. We have to scrap that. Get patriots through here. Let fans applaud them cheer for them thank them and move on. Three soldiers patrolling near a Jewish Community center in nice in france were attacked with knives today. They were slightly wounded. Were still learning details of the attack. They did that because there were threats they felt on those institutions. They also felt there were threats or military personnel and police. On that point, john French Police arrested eight more people who they believe have links to jihadist cells. This is just the latest in a series of arrests that the country has made since last months deadly terror attacks in paris. Meanwhile, frances interior minister is trying to push through a new antiterrorism bill for the whole european union. It would require airlines to maintain and share data on all passengers entering and leaving countries who are part of the eu. Is your child vaccinated and are the countrys leaders being straight with you . Two potential republican president ial candidates kentucky senator rand paul and new Jersey Governor Chris Christie are stirring up controversy over the issue of vaccinations with their comments. They both say they are in favor of children being vaccinated but they also both said that parents should decide. Whats more important as a parent than what you think as a public official. Thats what we do. I also understand that parents need to have some measure of choice. Thats the balance that the government has to decide. I heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. Im not arguing vaccines are a bad idea. Think that theyre a good thing. I think the parent should have some input. Lets get to facts behind the political rhetoric. Chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta is joining us along with an Infectious Disease specialist joining us in studio. Its important to get to the heart of this whole the question at the heart of this whole problem i would describe it as. Are vaccines safe especially when youre talking about measles . What do you say . I say theyre safe. Theres obviously when you look at these things you have to put things in a little bit of context any time you take something into your body. Is there a potential risk of some sort of side effect. Yes. Theres no question. Let me give you a little bit of context here. I think this is important the way i think about things. We have graphic to demonstrate this. When you talk about Adverse Reactions from vaccines and you have lots of data now. Decades worth of data. Serious allergic reaction. So when senator rand paul talks about he has seen many kids that have problems you get about 10 million kids that receive this shot a year. Maybe 10 out of those 10 million may have some sort of adverse serious reaction. Maybe hes met all of them. I dont know. Compare that to something much more common. Aspirin. 12 out of 10,000 can have a hemorrhage in their brain. That gives you context in terms of risk here which is important. You dont see antiaspirin lobby out there. Theyre not shouting from the rooftop. Its not controversial. Rand paul says hes heard of many cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. Is there any studies that say that . Is that based on any Scientific Evidence that you know about . No. In fact there are numerous studies that looked at whether theres an association between measles vaccines and other vaccines and autism and mental retardation. The institute of medicine compiled that research into a report which if you go to my twitter feed you can find a link. The data is overwhelming measles vaccines are safe and they are effective. Frankly, rand paul should say measles is one of the most common causes of childhood blindness worldwide and as an eye doctor he should advocate for measles vaccination for that reason. Sanjay its good that were having the conversation because there seems to be a lot of confusion and misinformation surrounding it. But where does i know that it comes from a couple different sources. Where does all of the paranoia come from . Its a great question. In trying to paint any particular group of people with one brush is challenging. I think theres a lot of parents out there who are confused by the whole thing and think what they want to be good parents and that maybe withholding vaccines or delaying vaccines is the right answer its not the right answer. Let me be clear on that. I have three kids. I love my kids. I got them vaccinated and on schedule. I think thats one part of it. There are people who have a deep distrust of anything pharmaceutical anything in the pharmaceutical industry period is going to ingender distrust from them and there are people who have political gains. They are pandering for one reason or another. Part of that is politics but this is a dangerous pandering going on because peoples lives and their wellbeing are at risk here. Well talk about the politics of this in just a moment. Doctor lets talk about the medicine for a moment here. What can we now do as parents . Theres this outbreak out there. More measles than weve seen in a long long time. What would you advise parents or People Like Us who were vaccinated decades ago . Do we need boosters . In 1990 the cdc started to recommend that we get a booster shot so you get one around a year of age and then a second shot at four to six years of age. Now, for those of who were born before 1990 which all of us here at the table i think were its helpful to get a booster shot if you havent already had one. Ive gotten one because i travel overseas where there is a lot of measles. That would be a good idea. Is there anything else you would look out for, sanjay in the immediate . Were talking about this is spreading as we speak. Parents are concerned. Does this outbreak have to subside, go away by itself or is it something that families can do to protect themselves . You see a pattern in these pockets of places that are unvaccinated and so obviously making sure your children are vaccinated is very important. I will say this is interesting. Its a really pretty unique situation overall in our country. This confluence of taking care of your other than Childrens Health but also recognizing by doing that you have taking care of other children as well. I have three kids. When my youngest was below a year old and couldnt be vaccinated she would have been at risk if older children had not been vaccinated. I know there are people on the fence about this. Its the science that is clear. You have decades of data and its safe and effective as your guest said. Thats why its a Public Health issue. Thats why its a Public Policy issue because it affects more than just your kids and your household which is why well talk about politics behind this in just a moment. The science right now is inconclusive but we have to research it. I understand that there are families that in some cases are concerned about the effect of vaccinations. The science is pretty indisputable. Theres every reason to get vaccinated. There arent reasons to not. So for a lot of folks it appears the president s view on this one has evolved. Earlier we heard comments from two potential republican candidates kentucky senator rand paul and new Jersey Governor Chris Christie both in their own way voicing support for parents right to choose whether or not to vaccinate their children. They both do say they had their children vaccinated and support the idea of children being vaccinated but say there are parents who should have rights not to have their children vaccinated also. Want to bring in our political commentators. Anna well start with you. The discussion has been on the republican side of the aisle for the last day or so. Of course a history of debate over vaccines in republican primaries. Remember rick perry and the hpv vaccine. What are politics of this now . What does rand paul get for talking about vaccines like this . I guess from the political aspect what he gets is media attention. We are talking about him on tv. And he also can appeal to some of the libertarian branch of the republican primary voters who are big into personal liberty, freedoms and the right to choose what to do with their kids. I think its important, john and you bring up hpv vaccine, to differentiate between what that is which is not a Communicable Disease, its against Cervical Cancer and what were talking about which is a Communicable Disease that was eeradicated and now has made a comeback and is a Serious Health threat to the United States. Im sorry its a political issue. I much rather hear sanjay gupta and dr. Cohen talk about this than any other potential 2016er on either side of the issue. Its an important issue to hear from candidates if this an issue like this comes up because its an issue of Public Policy. What happens in our schools. What happens if theres a massive outbreak where the government has to be involved to contain. Its important to understand a potential president ial candidates position on this. We overdramatize these issues. We this so huge with ebola that we couldnt get to the science. We couldnt locate where it was happening. We began to fear our neighbors and fear if we got an airplane somehow we would contract this virus. I agree with ana. There are some things that politicians should perhaps err on the side of caution. The science is clear on this. Children issued be vaccinated. Democrats have a problem with this as well donna. Just to this point, this is not a major part of any president ial campaign. This is one of issues that bubbles up and can derail a campaign effectively if they dont answer these questions and answer to voters in an appropriate way. What can derail a campaign is if you are being seen as pandering to one group or another. I think one important lesson for any candidate to learn is that you dont have to opine on every issue and every question that is posed to you. At some point its better to let the folks that are experts on these particular in this case though hang on. In this case leaving it to the experts does take a side on this because the experts, the doctors, the scientific community, they all agree that parents should have their children vaccinated. So there are politicians on both sides of the aisle. Will republican candidates have the courage to say to the libertarian base in the party that doctors say you should have your children vaccinated and do they have courage to go and tell people who shop at whole foods and dont get kids vaccinated that you are doing a disservice to other kids in the schools . I would hope so. I understand how we have to make everything a petty partisan issue. On this this is a Public Health concern. I would hope that we would err on the side of caution and listen to doctors and scientists. On the other hand yes, we have to stand up and tell the facts and talk to constituents and talk to potential voters. Hopefully we can tell them the truth and not just tell them you know what they want to hear. Thats what we need our politicians to do. On the point that donna made earlier about overdramatizing, lets also be clear that none of these guys not rand paul or Chris Christie have said dont vaccinate your kids. They have left themselves a little wiggle room but they are not advocating a no vaccine type of position. Happening right now, the white house is said to be considering a new move sending lethal aid to ukraine to help defend against attacks from the prorussian rebels. A decision being made even more urgent after a u. N. Report shows that more civilians are being killed there as Government ForcesUkrainian Forces battle prorussian rebels and possibly russian soldiers as well. Secretary of state john kerry is going to visit kiev later this week to meet ukraines top leaders. The state Department Said hell highlight u. S. Ben rhodes on our air last night says that its still the White House Position that more arms would only make things worse but there are others in the state department and Defense Department who urge reconsidering. There are democrats on the hill. Senator chris murphy who changed his mind on this as now we should send defensive weapons in there. I spoke to a Senate Source that have heard different views from within the white house. No final decision made. Clearly a debate still under way. What has changed is that on the ground Ukrainian Forces are losing ground. They dont have firepower to respond to the increased russian firepower. Its not just rebels. Its russian tanks and russian heavy weapons and Russian Troops that have tilted the tide and turned the tide against those ukraineian forces. There are military officials including a nato official who support giving lethal aid to ukraine but how do they respond when there is a suggestion that you cant outarm the russians on the russian border. No amount ofwill give them the edge if russia is intent on sending their own forces in. Thats the position that ben rhodes and others make and president has make. You give more arms and the concern is does that spur Vladimir Putin to further military action there. Does it make the situation worse . But the proponents arent saying arm Ukrainian Military to beat the russians. No one says thats plausible. They say right the balance on the ground so you have the groundwork laid for negotiations because its their view as russians are steam rolling through the east that there is no incentive to get to the negotiating table if you raise cost on the ground for Russian Forces and those proRussian Forces that they will be more likely to go to the negotiating table. They already raised the economic cost. Sanctions have bitten with the fall in the price of oil but thats not changed president putins calculus on the ground. Unclear if more weapons will do that. Td ameritrade. You got this. The murder trial of former patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez is in recess right now. No testimony has been heard today. It appears it hit a snag. Lawyers debated some kind of issue with a juror who left the courtroom and then in a different side bar hearing, with the judge the two sides took up a dispute over evidence. Odin lloyds girlfriend was scheduled to be back on stand. The trial puts the sisters on opposite ends of this case. Shaneah is hernandezs fiance and hernandez is charged with murdering odin lloyd back in 2013. Miguel marquez is covering the trial and sunny hostin in studio. Whats going on there today, miguel . Whats the hold up . Reporter as you were uttering those words that they are in recess they have just come back into session. The lawyers gathered. The victims family has come back into the courtroom and they have decided to get the day going finally after taking yesterday off because of the snow up here. There seems to be two issues they were dealing with today. One was what appears to be a juror. A female in her 40s. 13 women and 5 men that are on that jury. Six of them will be alternates that wont be decided until they go into deliberations. One of those jurors was questioned today. Aaron hernandez at some point during this side bar out of the ear shot of the other jurors came up and was talking to both lawyers and the judge about this particular juror. Then that juror went off to the side and there was discussion about evidence. Some other evidence the prosecution may want to bring into this case. Hernandezs lawyers arguing he had the right to be at the side bar for that. Judge saying no, not necessarily. He does for the juror but not for the evidentiary hearing so thats what they went into over the last hour is this evidence hearing. What its about and what it might be . Hopefully well find out shortly now that they are back in session. Sunny hostin is with us as well. Miguel lays it out. For the layman, its confusing. Sum it up. What is going on is the question. Judges dont like this stuff to be going on when there is a jury empanelled. They dont want to waste the jurys time. This is probably unexpected. Jurors sometimes do something over the weekend that maybe they didnt think they should do and so they go into the judge and say, hey, perhaps i was watching the super bowl and everybody started talking about Aaron Hernandez. I know you advised me not to be part of that conversation. It just happened. Am i okay . Jurors do sometimes check in. The juror issue is not uncommon. What is a bit uncommon is this potential evidentiary issue. Judges again before the jury is empanelled want to hash this out. Its like a well orchestrated dance once you get into a trial. Prosecutors know what evidence they are putting in. Defense also knows the evidence thats coming in. So this is a bit unusual and judges are loathe to get into this evidentiary stuff when you have 18 people waiting to hear the evidence. You thought they would have done that before. Let me ask you about the unusual familial issue. One of the witnesses we expect to hear from soon is the girlfriend of odin lloyd. Her sister is the fiance of Aaron Hernandez sitting on that side of the courtroom. I know strange things happen in murder trials. This is pretty unusual. You know i have to tell you, for me and my experience john its not that unusual. You would be surprised how these trials tear families apart. Often times you have an agent that knocks on someones door and says guess what . If you dont testify against your brother or against your cousin youre going to go down and people are on opposite sides of these kind of cases. Unfortunate but it does happen. Unusual that you have one sister sort of behind the defendant and then another sister behind them supporting the victim and the victims family but, again, these type of trials tear families apart. Were still early on in terms of hearing testimony from the girlfriend. She should be or maybe is back on the stand as were talking right now. She established sounds to me like a benign fact. The fact that they were in early stages of friendship. Odin lloyd and Aaron Hernandez, why is that important . Its very important. If you listen to the defenses opening statement, this case is going to turn i think, ort of supports the notion that perhaps they werent such great friends. Maybe they were enemies. Maybe they had an issue. Maybe he would have motive to kill. Interesting context. I was wondering the same thing. At this hour the family of Bobbi Kristina brown is asking for prayers and privacy as they reportedly fights for her life in a hospital near atlanta. The late Whitney Houstons daughter was found unresponsive saturday in a bathtub at her home. Shes now in a medically induced coma to relieve the swelling in her brain. Sources tell cnn she had seizures on monday. Whats the latest on her status . Reporter as you know theres very limited information out there about Bobbi Kristinas condition but a source close to the family tells cnn that Bobbi Kristina did open and close her eyes several times yesterday. That having doctors told the family not to read too much into that movement. Doctors were reportedly trying to reduce the amount of sedatives to try to see how her brain was functioning but they decided ultimately to keep her in a coma for now. The 21yearold, as you know has been hospitalized since saturday morning. And she is reportedly on a ventilator and being treated in intensive care. Do we know anything more about how she ended up there, what got her to the bathtub in the first place . Thats the big question. Nobody really knows what caused Bobbi Kristina to become unresponsive at her home. We know that she was not breathing. We know she did not have a heartbeat when paramedics arrived at the house. We also know that nick gordon whom she reportedly married about a year ago found her in the bathtub and called 911. Police say he was performing cpr until police and paramedics arrived. We have also learned from the Police Report that there was a third person in the home. That persons name is maxwell lomez. He has a prior conviction for possession of marijuana and that just last month he was charged with several felonies including possession of xanax and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. All of that said it is important to note that police say they are treating this as a medical incident and that investigators have not found anything at this point to indicate what happened was related to either drugs or alcohol. Despite being pushed out of this former stronghold two weeks ago by these russianbacked separatists, themselves heavily armed, this is their form of airport shuttle. Were moving now in an armored car towards the new terminal of the airport, territory which the separatists have taken but is still regularly under fire from the Ukrainian Military. We pull into the airport longterm underground parking. Occasionally shells are still landing here. The fight here killed hundreds as ukrainians used service tunnels. The men claimed these bodies were left in the ukrainian retreat. The last call for passengers on this walkway passed months ago. These pictures from three years ago showing how it used to sparkle. Hard to imagine how just six months ago we were here flying out of donetsk, it was then a stateoftheart international terminal. Just look at the destruction and how this symbolizes how far Eastern Ukraine has fallen. Mortars often fall here. So we move fast. They used to call this the new terminal opened two years ago for football fans coming to see the european championship. But that newfound european optimism has evaporated. The war here is entering a new phase with the heaviest of weapons and the random shelling of civilians in which victory has become more important than its spoils.
