Khattalah is charged in the attack that left four americans dead. Our Senior International correspondent, arwa damon, sat down with him in a cafe last year. He denied involvement in that attack in benghazi and claimed no official has ever asked him about the attack. [ speaking Foreign Language ] [ speaking Foreign Language ] obviously, agreeing to sitting down with arwa on condition we wouldnt show his face, but we could hear his voice. We will get to arwa live in a minute to talk about that interview. I should also mention, president obama just mentioned this major arrest moments ago and talked about what it means for him and the United States. We continue to think about and pray for the families of those who were killed during that terrible attack, but more importantly, its important for us to send a message to the world that when americans are attacked, no matter how long it takes, we will find those responsible and we will bring them to justice. And thats a message i sent the day after it happened and regardless of how long it takes, we will find you. And i want to make sure that everybody around the world hears that message very clearly, because my first and most solemn duty as president and commander in chief is to keep the American People safe. That was the president minutes ago speaking at a stop in pennsylvania. Here we go. Lets go to the pentagon. Take a listen. Has been charged for his role on the attacks in the u. S. Facilities in benghazi, libya on september 11th, 2012. No u. S. Personnel or civilians were injured in this operation which was carried out in close coordination with Law Enforcement personnel. The United States has taken khattalah to a secure location outside libya. He will be brought to the United States to stand trial in a court of law. Secretary hagel is proud of everyone who meticulously planned and executed this operation. They took great personal risk to fulfill our pledge that the United States will do whatever it takes to ensure justice comes to those who harm american citizens. It is also an important reminder to the American People as well as to our partners and our adversaries alike that the u. S. Military works every single day to be ready to carry out the orders of the commander in chief and to defend this nation. Just a quick note on scheduling. As you may know, secretary hagel will testify on our budget before the Senate Appropriations committee, subcommittee on defense tomorrow, and on thursday, he will host the german minister of defense for her first visit to the pentagon since taking office earlier this year. With that, i will take your questions. Reporter can you say whether he will be coming back here to d. C. Area for trial . Is that the plan . And he was living out in the open in libya. He was interviewed by reporters, press last year. Can you address why this took so long and whether or not there was any either notification or coordination with the libyans at all . Anyone . Okay. Theres a lot there. On whether hes coming back to stand trial, im referring you to the justice department. I cant speak to that. What i can tell you is that certainly we have long maintained on the consultations with libya, we have long made it clear that we were going to hold accountable the perpetrators of benghazi. This should come as no surprise to anyone, least of all the Libyan Government, and i can tell you that they were notified they were notified about this capture operation. Im sorry, your other one was . Oh, about living in well, look, terrorists go to Great Lengths to evade capture, and it can be it can be a complicated process trying to get at them. You dont want to ever execute a mission like this, a complicated mission like this, without having the proper information and resources, so what matters is not that it took a matter of time to get him, but that we got him. And i cant speak for his living habits, but lets just say for arguments sake he was living lets pull away. Thats really the question. If arwa damon sat down with this man at some point last year, what took the u. S. So long to grab and arrest him . We will double back to that. Let me bring in arwa damon. She is standing by live. Bob baer, former cia, standing by as well. Evan perez, let me go to you. You have the answer to one of the questions asked of the admiral, that being the ticktock, if you will, as far as where he will be brought to the u. S. Tell me about that. We expect he will be brought to the United States in the next couple of days, and he is set to be tried in washington, d. C. , where the charges were filed last july. Now, we first reported last september that these charges existed and the president confirmed them in a press conference a couple months later. But this has been a very complicated thing for the justice department, for the fbi and for the pentagon, simply because he was in benghazi which is obviously not very friendly territory, and before they capture someone, they want to go in with overwhelming force, and they assumed that perhaps they are going to get shot at and perhaps civilians might get harmed. It took a lot of planning to carry out this operation. We are told this is something they have been trying to do and planning to do for several months. They even had a chance last october when the u. S. Captured another terrorist, al libi, who was involved in the 1998 Embassy Bombing case, and at that time, they thought they had a chance to get Abu Khattalah as well and that didnt prove to be the case. They finally did get an opportunity today im sorry, over the weekend, and they grabbed him. Okay. Evan, stand by. Arwa, let me go to you. I watched your whole piece from last year and the fact that you tracked this man down, ahmed Abu Khattalah and sat with him in this cafe. He took at issue your tone, it sounded like his fear of talking to u. S. Officials would be that it would be more of an interrogation. What do you make of this question, what took the u. S. So long . I think one has to look at the groundwork that existed in libya at the time that we sat down with Abu Khattalah. This was almost exactly a year ago, may of 2013, when we first met him. It was at a time when americas relationships with the Libyan Government was tenuous at best. There was a lot of antiamerican sentiment, and therefore not a lot of support within the Libyan Security forces, nor within the government in and of itself to actually allow the u. S. To conduct any sort of raid on libyan soil or any sort of attempt to capture him. There were also a lot of concerns at the time that his capture, especially at the hands of u. S. Forces, would perhaps further inflame antiamerican sentiment, further complicate what was already a very complicated security situation in benghazi at the time, again, a year ago. We were seeing proal qaeda graffiti being painted on the walls, Libyan Security forces were not necessarily in control. Fast forward to what benghazi looks like right now. Still very lawless, still a very dangerous place, but at the same time, interestingly, you have this big antiislamist movement that has been happening, part of it spearheaded by a renegade general who made it his mission to go after these various different islamist brigades, focusing very heavily on sharia and also the support of the population when it comes to these operations. So the circumstances inside libya right now make it much more conducive for this kind of operation to take place. Plus, after the attack on the u. S. Consulate and the cia annex, america lost a lot of its eyes on the ground, most valuable assets on the ground that could be intelligence gathering. That could have contributed to this as well. So two explanations, very valid explanations there. Bob, i should point out to the viewers even though we pulled away from the pentagon briefing, we are watching it from the control room and thus far, he hasnt revealed anything specific about the raid. Thats what we were really listening for. But from sources, bob, we know that it was either army delta forces or navy s. E. A. L. S who conducted it. Thats from our own reporting at the pentagon. Can you tell me what kind of operation might have gone down here . It was entirely covert in a city like benghazi. You cant go in with uniforms showing guns. Both delta and the s. E. A. L. S have been practicing this for years, where they can pull up in a couple vans for years. Jump out, grab the person. Yeah, for years. They have been doing this since iraq, really. They need to come in quietly. They cannot come into a neighborhood firing. At the same time, they need to have complete dominance in that neighborhood. They dont want to be surprised. They brought along an fbi agent, i can read between the lines on this, simply to effect the arrest because chain of evidence, you dont want delta force or the s. E. A. L. S having to show up in court. So the fbi agent throws the cuffs on him. So hes in the department of justice control at this point. It tells me that this is going to be a civilian trial which is the way it should be. As evan was reporting, he will be heading to the u. S. In a matter of days to face justice. But what about, we were wondering, bob, the u. S. Has killed, we have taken out alleged terrorists in other countries, no trial, no evidence, no lawyers. What makes khattalah different . Well, i think all americans want to know what happened, what happened at this raid, how far in advance it was planned and the rest of it. Its a huge political issue. Yes, delta and the s. E. A. L. S could have had a targeted killing and gotten rid of the guy but i think for all of us, we would like to know what happened and see somebody come to justice, and i think its fortunate timing for the administration. They have been planning this for years or two years at least. Timing for that Hillary Clinton town hall tonight, im sure these are things she will be asked about for sure. Thank you all so much for your expertise, for your reporting on this story. Coming up next, we are staying on this. I will speak live with Patricia Smith, a mother who lost her son. He was one of the four americans killed in that attack in benghazi. Back to our breaking news here, the search for answers about what happened in benghazi. Its been a long road. The arrest of ahmed Abu Khattalah is finally news for those waiting, wanting answers. One of those outspoken critics has been Patricia Smith, because her son, sean smith, a state Department Information officer, was one of the four americans killed in benghazi in september of 2012. Patricia smith talked to Anderson Cooper a month after that attack. I told him if its such a secret thing, fine, take me in another room, whisper in my ear what happened so i know and well go from there. But no, no, they treat me like at first i was so proud because they were treating me so nice when i went to that reception. They all came up to me and talked to me and everything. I cried on obamas shoulder. And then he kind of looked off into the distance. So that was worthless to me. I want to know, for gods sakes, or for allahs sake or for whoevers sake is there. I dont know where i look on tv and see bloody handprints on walls, thinking my god, is that my sons . I dont know if he was shot, i dont know i dont know. They havent told me anything. Theyre still studying it and the things that they are telling me are just outright lies. That was Patricia Smith then. She is joining me now on the phone. Welcome. I will never forget that interview, thinking of those bloody handprints and you not knowing fit was your son. I will see if you got the answers you deserve but first, what do you make of the news today that the u. S. Has finally captured this key suspect in the attack that killed your son . Pat smith, can you hear me . Its brooke with cnn. Were live on tv. Okay. Can you hear me . I can hear you. Youre cutting in and out. Hopefully we wont. I will just repeat my question and speak slowly for you. My question is this. With the news today of this key capture of one of these alleged terrorists involved in the attack that killed your son, what do you make of that news . Well, its wonderful that they finally caught him after all this time. I didnt have too much hope for it anymore because they didnt want to. How do you mean . Well, if he was out there and available to be spoken to and other people can speak to him, why did it take them so long to do this . They didnt want to. I dont know if it was because of something thats so secret over there, i dont know. They havent told me anything. They still havent told me anything. Anything that i have gotten, any information ive gotten has been from the outside, from not from the state department, because they just told me lies. I have gotten it from the s. E. A. L. S and from the people that were there and some terrorists even called me on the phone and told me some of the things that happened. So i dont have too much hope for anything else other than that theyve got to get the rest of those guys. Theyve got to get them and like they promised, theyve got to just do it, for gods sakes. Just do it. But no, they dont want to. Because theyre afraid something might come out. They did it, it sounds like, with this one individual. I hear you, we know there could be others that they are looking for, but i hear the passion, i hear the frustration in your voice. You were frustrated two years ago and understandably so. In talking to my colleague, anderson. When you say you havent got the answers, the answers that you were promised from Hillary Clinton and barack obama and joe biden, can i ask, whens the last time you heard from either of those individuals or someone from state . Okay. The last time i heard from them was at the casket ceremony when they said that theyre going to let me know when the ceremony comes up so they can get me down for the medal ceremony. They never did. I had to get transportation from hannity. He was able to afford or he paid for my airplane ticket to go there for the medal ceremony. But they did not contact me at all. Not at all. Do you even know to this day, were coming up on two years in just a couple of months, do you know the official cause of death for sean . Do i know, i dont know if i do or not. I know what ive been told. But i have been told two different things. Both of them are the same type of thing, that it was asphyxiation from the diesel fire. But im not even sure if he was in the casket. I asked to see him and they wouldnt let me see him. They said i had to go to dover in order to see who was in that casket. Which i didnt do. What about the fact we have now learned that this man, this alleged terrorist, will be brought to u. S. Soil, he will face the american justice system, federal court in washington, d. C. How do you feel about him being brought to the u. S. , how do you what does justice look like for you . Justice for me, i dont think there is justice for me. My son is gone. Hes dead. Nobody has been standing up to say its their fault. They stand up for it and this is the reason why. Thats what i want to know, why. Why were those decisions made, not a bunch of baloney that they have been handing out, but why were those decisions made, and why, just why. A whole bunch of whys because nobody has talked to me about anything. Not about anything. Yes, im upset and i think i will be upset until the day i die. Im sorry. You have every right to be upset and you deserve all the answers. Theyve they dont give a damn. You would think after all this time, all i ask for is hillary who give me a telephone call and tell me what happened. If its classified, fine, whisper it in my ear but just tell me. No, she gets to know. Everybody else in the big shot wing gets to know but the mother of the son that got killed is not allowed to know these things. Hillary clinton will be answering questions as part of a town hall in a couple of hours here on cnn. Let me ask you live on cnn, if you could ask her one question, because Christiane Amanpour will be doing so, what is your one question for Hillary Clinton . Why did she not give security to those people that were there. She sent them in there to do her thing, whatever it is that they were supposed to do, which they did willingly, and my son im sure did willingly, and he would probably do it again even knowing what the outcome is. But why cant they just tell me the truth . Just the truth. That should be something thats allowable. But she dont care. She wants to be president. We dont know. She has written about this, she has answered many questions, she testified under oath for seven hours. I hear you, though. I hear your frustration. Let me just end with this and we will be watching to see how she responds to some of this. Certainly it will be brought in front of her in a couple of hours. I want to end with sean. He left behind a family, a wife, children. What do you want the world to know about sean . Oh, god. Im sure he was he agreed to do whatever it is that they wanted him to do. Im sure he volunteered, as they say, because this is the way he was. We had always told him honey, just you dont choose it, it chooses you. It will find you and have you do whats necessary to do. But the state department stinks. When i was there at the ceremony for the colin powell ceremony when sean was elected into the Foreign Services institute, colin turned around to all the people that were there, i was there, i know, he turned around to everybody there and says look, everybody, look at the people that are here on this stage graduating from the institute. I want you to know that these are my people and i will never, ever let you down. Turned around and looked at everybody and said look at that person, thats the one thats going to be helping you, thats the one thats going to be there for you when you need help. And guess what . Nobody was there. They even denied him why did they deny him the security they asked for over eight times . Why did hillary sit there and watch drones go through and not do anything about it . And why did obama go to las vegas to make his bets or whatever it is he did in las vegas to raise money, because thats the important thing. Why all that . Why cant they just give me an answer on something . That will make me go away, but they wont do it. Maybe they will. Maybe they will. Maybe they will. No, they wont. No, they wont. Patricia smith, im so sorry for the loss of your son. I appreciate all the time you have given me. Quite candidly here, live on tv. Thank you. Im so sorry. Thank you. Ask your gastroenterologist about humira today. Remission is possible. Welcome back. Bottom of the hour. The president says sending troops into combat on iraqi soil is not an option. Right now we do know that 225 troops are being deployed. The distinction, they are there to provide support and security for u. S. Personnel. The last combat troops left two and a half years ago, leaving behind u. S. Trained iraqi forces. Right now, those iraqis are all that are standing in the way of this brutal terrorist Militia Group who first gained ground in syria and now, as we have been reporting, iraq. It appears the iraqis are losing the battle. Today, isis is gaining more footholds, marching closer to baghdad. Fighting breaking out in a new town, city of baqubah less than 40 miles north of baghdad. Colonel rick francona, let me bring you in. Welcome. Good afternoon. Do we know what these 275 u. S. Troops will be doing . Any idea . Yeah. Theyre there to beef up the security embassy. Thats a huge embassy, the largest in the world, at one time 5500 people working there. So their Security Force is not equipped to take on a battle so they are in there to plan an evacuation if that needs to happen and provide security in the case of that. Some of the other ones, its kind of phrased a little differently. 100 others will be doing other things. Hopefully, they will be training and advising the iraqis. We trained these iraqis. Unfortunately, the leadership has failed. Maybe we can get in there and get some advice into this leadership and turn this around. Okay. So maybe that can happen. But as far as options for the u. S. , we knew from the white house that theyre telling cnn one very real option could be air strikes. But according to previous reporting, air strikes arent necessarily realistic, perhaps we dont have enough intelligence. You have the collateral damage, too many civilian casualties, no one on the ground to direct the air strikes, not to mention isis. They are constantly on the move. So how are air strikes even really a possibility here . Yeah. Thats a real problem. The knee jerk reaction is we will do air strikes, we will send drones in there, we will blow up something. Thats all well and good, but you have to have targets. You have to know what youre going to hit, you have to know what effect youre trying to achieve. Are you trying to slow down the advance, are you trying to destroy the logistics, are you trying to kill the leadership . All of that requires precise intelligence. The best way to get that intelligence of course is have assets on the ground. Once you commit to doing the air strikes, there is Nothing Better than a u. S. Special forces or Army Special Forces team or u. S. Air force Tactical Control Party on the ground to designate the targets for the fighters. Otherwise, you are relying on iraqis and we have seen how poorly trained they are to do this for us. That will just lead to immense civilian casualties. It probably will have the negative it will have the exact opposite effect we are trying to have. As i mentioned, just one of several options the white house is weighing. Colonel, thank you so much for joining me this afternoon. Let me just remind you, Anderson Cooper is on the ground in iraq. He will be reporting from baghdad on the crisis. Make sure you watch him tonight for the details. Ac 360 live at 8 00 eastern on cnn. Coming up, dr. Oz on capitol hill today testifying in front of this committee about sham weight loss tricks . In his search to help viewers lose weight, dr. Oz himself may risk losing some of his credibility. Today, the surgeon and tv star sat before the senates Consumer Protection panel on capitol hill, facing criticism for the quote unquote, oz effect. When you feature a product on your show, it creates what has become known as the oz effect, dramatically boosting sales and driving scam artists to pop up overnight, using false and deceptive ads to sell questionable products. While i understand that your message is also focused on basics like Healthy Eating and exercise, im concerned you are melding medical advice, news and entertainment in a way that harms consumers. You are very powerful, and power comes with power comes a great deal of responsibility. You are being made an example of today because of the power you have in this space. Dr. Oz has touted the benefits of green coffee bean extract, other supplements on his show, if youve watched. His detractors say the products do not have the medical studies to back his enthusiastic claims. Oz sat there today in d. C. And told those senators he cant control how internet scammers distort his comments, but he is now very aware of his need to carefully choose his words. I actually do personally believe in the items that i talk about on the show. I passionately study them. I recognize that oftentimes they dont have the scientific muster to present as fact but nevertheless, i would give my audience the advice i give my family all the time, and i have given my family these products, specifically the ones you mentioned. Im comfortable with that part. Where i do think i have made it more difficult for the ftc is that an intent to engage viewers, i use flowery language, i use language that was very passionate but it ended up not being helpful but incendiary. It provided fodder for unscrupulous advertisers. Joining me now, our senior medical correspondent, elizabeth cohen. You have been on dr. Ozs show. What about the point with the ftc where they are warning listen, a lot of these big bogus claims on tv are just that, bogus. Why dont they go after the products . You would think. The fda does that with drugs so i asked the ftc that. They said there are just too many of them. We cant go after all of them. They said theres this endless flood of these products that are making claims that just arent true. They can go after only a small percentage. Even when they do go after them, it takes so long, the legal process, to get these things off the market takes so long that the products sit there while they go through it all. And people buy them and they dont work. How do you know . How are you supposed to know if its a fake or it has validity and works . I dont care if dr. Oz or dr. Whoever says its the greatest thing on earth. Go to the website for the product and find the studies that show its the best thing. If theyre making claims theyre supposed to have studies. If they dont, thats a problem. The ftc says some things are out and out false. For example, if a product says lose two pounds a week for a month without dieting or exercise, just dont believe it. Lose substantial weight by blocking the absorption of calories. Not possible. Rub in this cream and get weight loss. We wish. Wouldnt that be fabulous. Just not true. Okay. Do your homework. Go to the website, read the studies. Thank you so much for checking up on that. We came out of the white house not only dead broke, but in debt. We had no money when we got there. Let me just clarify that i fully appreciate how hard life is for so Many Americans today. Hillary, dead broke. Really . That may not have been the most artful way of saying that bill and i have gone through a lot of different phases in our lives. So thats one for you changed your mind. I have to say, i think you are very persistent but you are playing with my words and playing with what is such an important issue. Im just trying to clarify so i can understand. No, i dont think you are trying to clarify. When you are in the spotlight as a woman, you know youre being judged constantly. Im done with that. Im just done. You said youre just over it. I am over it. How about that. Here now, brian stelter, our cnn senior media correspondent. Talk about timing. Iraq, benghazi, clinton can now say at the town hall meeting, sure, knew about this stuff, i have been there, but on the other hand, neither iraq nor benghazi has turned out exactly well and she wasnt in charge of the policy at the time, correct . There are even these ridiculous ideas being floated online this afternoon that this capture in libya is somehow tied in some way to this book tour. Thats crazy. Thats just plain crazy. But the fact that you just spoke to a mother of one of the americans that died and the fact that she still has questions for Hillary Clinton speaks volumes. I think what Hillary Clinton would say to that mother, not to that mother, i think what clinton would say in general is what she said before, which is theres a difference between Unanswered Questions and unlistenedto answers. How do you say that to the mother of one of those four americans . I think shes probably thinking right now this afternoon about what to say in this town hall meeting. Can you blame the mother for being so frustrated, two years later all these promises. My heart goes out to her and her family. As far as the town hall tonight, tell me about the format. Who is in the audience, what will you be watching for . Well, this will be a theater in the round. It will feel i think as a viewer, not as a cnn person here, it will look president ial. You think about town hall formats. These are usually things we see in president ial debates. But in this case its bringing an historic figure, Hillary Clinton, together with a round robin sort of group of people, many of whom will have submitted questions ahead of time, and they will also be taking questions from the web, from tumblr, for example. Cnn has been making a big push to bring in questions there and to promote the town hall there. So its a unique format, like all the ones we have seen before where its oneonone interviews. This will be many different americans asking questions of Hillary Clinton and i wonder how her responses might differ because the questions are coming from ordinary americans. I love the idea of a lot of voices. Brian stelter, we will be watching and hopefully you will be watching. Remember, tonight cnn hosts this town hall with Hillary Clinton. You can watch it live 5 00 eastern with a special replay at 9 00 eastern only here on cnn. Well be right back. Were moving our company to new york state. The numbers are impressive. But then you grow up and theres no going back. But its okay, its just a new kind of adventure. And really, who wants to look backwards when you can look forward . Lot of people are coming out with some strong opinions about how to handle the Current Situation in iraq and many of them, very familiar with how we got here. Paul bremer, the former u. S. Envoy to iraq and head of the Coalition Provisional authority, that was the organization to help rebuild the country after the fall of saddam hussein, he basically was the man who ran iraq back in 20032004, and now with iraq on the brink of a civil war, paul bremer is weighing in on the Current Crisis and his opinion, the u. S. Should have boots on the ground. Take a listen to what he told erin burnett last night. I want to make it clear. Youre not trying to blame president obama for anything thats gone wrong, are you . I am saying that his decision to withdraw all the troops at the end of 2011 was a serious mistake. Right. But im saying that wasnt his decision. Im on the record as saying that three years ago. Yes, it was, erin. But president bush signed that agreement in 2008 that promised that all those troops would be removed at the end of 2011. The planning in 2011 leaked very heavily from the pentagon and the white house was to keep 20,000 to 30,000 troops after 2011. Right. The white house then leaked that they really wanted to only keep 3,000. Then they said to al maliki not only do we want a status of forces agreement but you have to get it through your parliament. So for the first time, to my knowledge, since 1945, we had 84 s. O. F. A. Agreements around the world, we were telling the host government how they should proceed in approving that status of forces agreement. That put al maliki in an impossible political situation. 3,000 troops werent we trying to do it in a democratic way . Hold on. Can you answer that question . Wasnt he trying to use his parliament in a way to have them democratically support that agreement . After i answer the question, i will answer your next question. Usually the system goes you ask a question, the guest answers it, then you ask the next question. That is true. I felt i had given you plenty of time on the prior question. As long as you finish it, please answer the one i just asked. From al malikis point of view, we had said we were going to only have 3,000 troops there. That means in effect, they would do nothing. They would sit at the baqubah air force base and protect themselves. Less than a brigade. They would not have any effective counterinsurgency or basically any major training. So we put al maliki in an impossible situation with that demand. And effectively, i think, in many ways, there are a lot of people in this town who believe, and i am among them, this suited the president s purpose. He didnt want to have to keep the troops there. Certainly everything he has done since then in libya and in syria speaks very highly of a desire to get out of this region. That was part of the conversation last night. I sat down with Michael Holmes earlier today at Cnn International anchor, correspondent, i asked him what he thought of bremers controversial stance. Michael holmes is joining me. You are our goto guy on everything iraq. You have been there 14 times. You were there every single year of the war. You have literally seen baghdad burning. When you see paul bremer coming on national television, what was your reaction to the interview . You know, you cant lay the whole blame at paul bremers feet. A lot of people are responsible for whats going on in iraq right now. But i can tell you what, what was obvious when we got off the air was the americans did a great battle plan to win the war. They didnt know what to do when they got there. Within two or three days of me getting to baghdad, buildings were on fire, the whole city had a smoke haze from the looters. The big mistake that he made was firing the army, sent home a couple hundred thousand guys. He, bremer. Yeah, with no pay and guns. Sent them home. They were a bit annoyed by that. His pushback with erin burnett last night, he said listen, iraq was on the road to success, albeit this whole situation clearly with isis, he said iraq was a success. He said take a look at Life Expectancy rates, theyre up. He said take a look at the democratic constitution, look at the democratic elections, all six of them. You were there as recent as january. How would you describe it . Totally insecure. I was there throughout all the things he said were going great. Electricity was always horrible in baghdad. It was totally unreliable. There was sewage in the streets for a lot of the time. It was a mess. The infrastructure of iraq was total and utter mess. Thats putting lipstick on a pig to say things were working okay. In terms of the stability, no, when i was there in january, there were bombs every single day i was there. In baghdad. In baghdad. There were six bombs in an hour on two separate days that we were there. Its extraordinarily insecure. When the u. S. Was there, it wasnt perfect. They kept a lid on it and when they left, Everything Else has bubbled to the surface aided by Nuri Al Maliki and him being essentially a sectarian dictator. Michael holmes, thanks for sitting down with me earlier today. We are getting word, militants in iraq, just 30 miles away from baghdad. Cnns special coverage continues in just a moment. Ugh. Heartburn. Did someone say burn . Try alka seltzer reliefchews. They work just as fast and are proven to taste better than tums smoothies assorted fruit. Mmm. Amazing. Yeah, i get that a lot. Alka seltzer heartburn reliefchews. Enjoy the relief. Thank ythank you for defendiyour sacrifice. And thank you for your bravery. Thank you colonel. Thank you daddy. If youre a current or former military member or their family, get an Auto Insurance quote and see why 92 of our members plan to stay for life. We roll on, hour two. Thank you so much for being with me. Youre watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. There are all kinds of theories about what happened in the u. S. Consulate in benghazi in september of 2012. We could finally get answers from a man accused of masterminding that attack, ahmed Abu Khattalah. He was arrested on sunday in libya in a raid carried out by the u. S. Military. Khattalah denies involvement in that attack that left those four americans dead, including the u. S. Ambassador to libya, christopher stevens. The president says khattalah will face the full weight of the u. S. Justice system. My first and most solemn duty as president and commander in chief is to keep the American People safe, and there are a lot of dangers out there and a lot of challenges and our diplomats serve with incredible courage and valor in some very difficult situations. They need to know that this country has their back and will always go after anybody who goes after us. So one of the big questions, this is the first question actually out of the gate at todays Pentagon Press briefing, what took so long to find him, to arrest him, when khattalah had basically been living out in the open this whole time. Joined by our justice reporter evan perez and in iraq, Senior International correspondent, arwa damon, who actually spoke with, interviewed that suspect in libya last year. Arwa, coming to you with that in a moment. Evan, you have new information as far as when khattalah will be brought to the u. S. To face the american justice system. What do you know . Thats right, brooke. In the coming days, u. S. Officials say that he will be brought to washington to face trial, where hes facing charges filed last july. Right now hes in u. S. Military custody. They are doing what are known as intelligence interviews. Its typically done by the High Value Interrogation Group which is a team of fbi, cia, dia agents, who specialize in getting intelligence out of people who have been detained. After that, he would be formally arrested, brought to the u. S. To face these charges, these criminal charges here in washington. So evan, thank you. Arwa, to you. With these terrorism related charges that this man faces here, you talked to him. Can you just give me the back story, how did you find him, how difficult was it to find khattalah to sit down in that cafe and pepper him with questions . Well, we were in benghazi about a year ago, may of 2013, doing a followup story to our reporting on the initial attack on the u. S. Consulate, and through a number of sources, for their own protection we dont want to disclose who these people are, we got ahold of his phone number, gave him a phone call and basically asked to set up an interview. It was about that simple. It was quite interesting to sit down and speak to him, because like so many others, we had so many questions even a year ago, back in may of 2013. U. S. Officials have often suggested that they would be interested in speaking to a man named ahmed Abu Khattalah about the events the night of the attack. Hes really not that difficult to find. We met with ahmed Abu Khattalah in public at the coffee shop of a wellknown hotel in benghazi for around two hours. He seemed to be confident, his demeanor most certainly not that of a man who believed that he was going to be detained or targeted any time soon. And he agreed to let us film audio but not video of our conversation. He doesnt deny that he was there the night of the attack. [ speaking Foreign Language ] [ speaking Foreign Language ] reporter he claims he didnt even know the americans had a consulate in benghazi. Never mind having any information about a specific location. [ speaking Foreign Language ] reporter his narrative is unclear and at times, seems to be contradictory. He says when he arrived at the perimeter of the compound, he saw men carrying rocketpropelled grenades and medium guns, and the gunfire prevented him from entering. By the time he managed to get inside the compound, everyone, he says, had withdrawn. Khattalah claims ambassador stevens suffocated because he was trying to burn important documents. [ speaking Foreign Language ] [ speaking Foreign Language ] reporter but in a long rambling interview, he also accuses the americans of using al qaeda as a boogeyman whenever it suits them and adds [ speaking Foreign Language ] reporter a lot of questions as to why it has taken the u. S. So long to apprehend this individual. That could be because at the time that we met him, again, about a year ago, the relationship between the libyans and the americans was quite tenuous and there were concerns that should the americans launch the type of operation that we saw them launch to capture him, it could only further aggravate the situation on the ground and potentially be detrimental to the libyan u. S. Relations. Arwa damon, thank you so much. Evan, thank you, in washington for us. Not to be forgotten in all of this, the families, the ones who have waited for answers and havent gotten them. They include Patricia Smith, one of the most outspoken critics of the Obama Administration. Her son, sean smith, a state Department Information officer, was one of the four americans killed in benghazi in september of 2012. And in a very candid, very emotional interview just a short time ago, i talked to her by phone. I asked her how she felt about khattalahs trial being held on u. S. Soil and if that meant justice for her. Justice for me . I dont think there is justice for me. My son is gone, hes dead. Nobody has been standing up to say its their fault and they stand up for it and this is the reason why. Thats what i want to know, why. Why was it why were those decisions made, not a bunch of baloney that they have been handing out, but why were those decisions made, and why, just why. A whole bunch of whys because nobody has talked to me about anything. Not about anything. Yes, im upset and i think i will be upset until the day i die. Im sorry. You have every right to be upset and you deserve all the answers but they dont care. They dont give a damn. Nobody you would think that after all this time, all i have asked for is for hillary to give me a telephone call and tell me what happened, if its classified, fine. Whisper it in my ear. But just tell me. But no. She gets to know, everybody else up there in the big shot wing gets to know, but the mother of the son that got killed is not allowed to know these things. Miss smith why . Hillary clinton will be answering questions as part of a town hall in a couple of hours here on cnn. Let me ask you, live on cnn, if you could ask her one question, because Christiane Amanpour will be doing so, what is your one question for Hillary Clinton . Why did she not give security to those people that were there . She sent them in there to do her thing, whatever it is that she was supposed they were supposed to do, which they did willingly, and my son im sure did willingly, and he would probably do it again even knowing what the outcome is. But why cant they just tell me the truth . I can understand her frustration. That was just a piece of the interview. If you want to watch the whole thing, we invite you to do so, go to cnn. Com. As i mentioned, word of this capture and i mentioned just with her in the interview, hours before cnns global town hall meeting with Hillary Clinton. Take a look now at the venue. It is the newseum in the nations capitol. Christiane amanpour will host the event starting at 5 00 eastern. Here is Hillary Clinton on benghazi just last week. We had a system and that system of course ended with me, but i take responsibility, but i was not making security decisions. Again, that town hall, 5 00 eastern here on cnn. Brianna keilar is live for us at the newseum. So brianna, brand new wrinkle to the benghazi story line here. Should we, i have to imagine she will be asked about this new arrest tonight at the town hall. Reporter i would certainly think so, brooke. I think Hillary Clinton would obviously say that this is a positive development, that it looks like someone is going to be held accountable for this, but at the same time, talking a lot about benghazi as shes eyeing a potential president ial run isnt necessarily a really good thing for her, when americans talk about what they like about Hillary Clinton, they feel very positively about her state department experience. But benghazi is really the bruise on that resume. 55 of those polled in a cnn orc survey that came out yesterday said they were really dissatisfied with how she handled benghazi, more dissatisfied with the Obama Administration but its not a really good thing for her and this coming out today means she will be talking about it. Yeah. Obviously beyond the bruise for that mother who is clearly so angry two years later. Youre at the newseum. Understand you got a little walkthrough today. Can you share that with me . Reporter yeah, thats right. So we went inside because we wanted to give you a little look behind the scenes as we get ready for this event that really is unique, because there is going to be an audience tonight. They are going to be participating and asking a lot of questions. Heres a look. As part of the only network televised town hall that Hillary Clinton is doing around her book rollout, cnn has a Live Audience of about 190 people and they are coming from north carolina, new mexico, really all over, to ask questions of Hillary Clinton. She will be sitting right here. This is the hot seat. And she will also be getting questions, i should mention, we are putting finishing touches here on the set, she will also be getting questions from people who have submitted via tumblr. Cnn has a partnership for this event. And our chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, will be sitting right here. She will be following up on those questions. Im sure that we will see something about benghazi on a day where it was revealed that a suspect has been arrested for that attack on the u. S. Consulate in libya about a year and a half ago. And also, Hillary Clinton has dodged that question of whether she is running for president in 2016. So many different ways. She says shes thinking about it but lets see what she says tonight. Thats a look at the room there for you, brooke. I should also mention, those questions that Hillary Clinton will be asked tonight, she hasnt seen them. They are being closely guarded by a small Editorial Team that is working with Christiane Amanpour. Okay. Brianna keilar, thank you so much. We will be tuned in, 5 00 eastern for exclusive town hall event with Hillary Clinton. As you mentioned, moderated by Christiane Amanpour. 5 00 and replay at 9 00 eastern. Next, less than 48 miles away, moving closer each and every day. This terror group isis is overrunning iraq, making its way toward the capital city of baghdad. Will they get there . What might their targets be . What happens if theyre successful . Also ahead, we are just learning here at cnn new information about Sergeant Bowe bergdahl. The u. S. In iraq, another city under siege. Gun battles erupting as militants are moving in. Whats happening is bloody but its the location of this particular city, baqubah, that is so frightening. Less than 40 miles north of baghdad, about a 45minute drive. Another potential foothold for isis as they march closer to baghdad. This rapid takeover spiraling out of control. You have president obama promising no combat troops. Hes sending in another type of u. S. Force, 275 troops to provide quote, unquote, support and security for u. S. Personnel. So joining me now, jim clancy, anchor at Cnn International. Before we talk troops here, you told one of our producers that you think isis is even surprised at how quickly they have swooped in and taken some of the cities. Sure. I dont think they expected to be able to move into mosul as quickly as they did. I dont think they expected the iraqi forces to withdraw that quickly. That leaves them with a position of how many men do they have to secure these areas, how vulnerable would they become as they continue to take so much territory, how much assistance are they getting from local tribes because they have been in disaffected cities. They have been in discussions with the tribes who are all frustrated. Even possibly some of the military. Really. All of these factors combined, they make me think that they are going to hold outside of baghdad. They wont quite take it . No. No. They wouldnt. Because it would take all of their men, all of their resources, to mount that kind of attack and they know that the Iraqi Government is going to defend that. Its not going to be given up like mosul was given up, like other areas were given up. We talked about baquba. They are fighting there today. The city is not totally in isis hands. The iraqi forces are fighting back. You are going to see more of that. What is the goal other than territory and power and momentum . Is it to get down here to the oil fields . Do they care about that . They obviously care about that. There is oil fields up here as well. They know they have to go up against the kurds so they have to be careful not to overextend themselves. These victories have been shocking to us and a bit surprising to isis itself as it analyzes just how popular are we. Remember something, all the graphic horrible pictures we saw of executions, they were the same pictures taken during the iraqi awakening when the sunni tribes turned on al qaeda in iraq and executed all the foreign fighters. Exactly. I watched it. Same scenario. They have to be mindful of that as well. Will the sunnis in iraq turn against them. Jim clancy, thank you. Coming up, just in to cnn, new details about Bowe Bergdahl, who as you know, back in the u. S. Recovering after those five years in captivity. We have just learned he is now being exposed to some of the Media Coverage of his story. Lets go to ed lavendera. What exactly is he being told . Reporter they are starting to expose him to some of that coverage. Of course there is a lot to digest, but even more importantly, a lot of that coverage that has happened here in the last three weeks or so, remember, Bowe Bergdahl as far as we know has no idea of the controversy, especially some of the criticism and the comments that have been made by the soldiers that served with him in that unit. Many of those soldiers who have called him a deserter and had very harsh words for him. So a lot of that now is being exposed to him, which in speaking with the psychologists and medical team that is treating him at Fort Sam Houston and that reintegration process we have heard so much about in the last few weeks, that that would be part of the process in exposing him and preparing him for that onslaught of attention that awaits him once he leaves this facility. So the medical experts there knowing that is going to be a huge part of his reintegration process and trying to resume a normal life again here in the United States, given the uncertainty of everything he faces at this point, his future and career in the army and what may come of that, possible criminal charges if the army chooses to go down that road after it conducts its investigation, and not only not even beginning to mention, as you have heard so much over the last three weeks, the criticism and statements that have come from fellow soldiers in his unit. As far as we know, also, still no visitors that Bowe Bergdahl has received, including his parents and thats going on two and a half weeks. Now, officials there at that Medical Center said that the bergdahl parents had been trusting in this program and following the steps and have put their faith in that program to ensure that their son get the best treatment possible, so that they could very well be following the medical experts lead. Now, those experts also said that it is up to Bowe Bergdahl. He is ready and asked for a phone to call his parents, they would give him one at that very moment. Clearly, they are saying that at this point, Bowe Bergdahl has chosen not to speak out to his parents. Wow. Some new details on Bowe Bergdahl. The next question, how is he responding to all that and the knowledge of the Media Coverage of him. We will wait for that. Ed, thank you. Next, you could hear the chants across the country. So you can get to why hes bilingual in a second but from what i hear, he is the total understudy story. He wasnt even supposed to play yesterday. Yes . Yes. That led to you just heard the announcer of the game say he couldnt have even dreamt it, but heres the irony, brooke. He did. A few days ago, he had a dream that he was going to score the gamewinning goal in around the 80th minute toward the end of the game. This was farfetched because he wasnt even supposed to be playing in the game. He was just a substitute. Turned out he only got in the game because two other players had to get injured. By the way, he is also a defender, a position that doesnt spend as much time around the net. So he did have this dream and its verified since he went in and told his teammates about it the next day, before the game was even played. He goes out, plays, and sure enough, pays it off. Got to love that. Of course, you got to love the american internet, too, because shortly thereafter, his Wikipedia Page was updated with where he was born and everything and then at the end, it said greatest american since abraham lincoln. We heard from the president making mention of that in his stop in pennsylvania today. The Obama Administration now has to answer to the question what took them so long. Well, its a legitimate question given that so many people, especially our own arwa damon, but other journalists as well, were able to not only locate Abu Khattalah but meet with him and interview him and talk to him. Arwa met with him for two hours in august 2013. So obviously, it is not the same thing for a journalist to make an appointment or to see a terrorist interview him and a special forces team to go in and grab him. Obviously those are two different things. But the Administration Response so far from the pentagon, from the state department, to be fair, i think they have been a little snarky about the question. Obviously there are a lot of political rumblings out there suggesting that the timing is convenient for the president. I find that a little hard to believe. Politics sullies so many things but its a legitimate question, if they had known, if the public has been able to see him, why wait. Valid question. So the issue of benghazi, the issue of iraq and whats been devolving over the last weeks or days, certainly questions Christiane Amanpour will be tossing toward or really asking in a tough way toward Hillary Clinton. Can you tell me a little more about the setup where you are, the format of this town hall . The town hall is in the studio where they have many events here at the newseum. 190 people will be in there with secretary clinton. They have been picked from local colleges, universities, Community Groups and Christiane Amanpour will preside over it. She will ask her own questions. People from the audience will be able to ask questions of secretary clinton herself. We are all looking forward to it. Its very exciting here. I dont know if you have ever been here but this is one of the best museums in the country. Were in the Pulitzer Prize winning photograph section right now. Its kind of fun. I like it. I can see you sort of dillydallying about before your show. Its phenomenal. I went to the arlington location many many moons ago. We will be watching, of course, you at the top of the hour. Thank you. Then just a reminder to all of you, 5 00 eastern, our exclusive town hall event with Hillary Clinton moderated by Christiane Amanpour. Do not miss that. Next, an oped the then senator joe biden wrote about iraq almost ten years ago is coming back up. He was ridiculed at this idea at the time but were his words actually predicting the violence, the breaking apart that we would see today . We will tell you what he said and how some are reacting to that now. [ girl ] my mom, she makes underwater fans that are powered by the moon. She can print Amazing Things, right from her computer. Fame now to the fastmoving situation unfolding in iraq. 275 u. S. Troops are being deployed there. Their mission, to provide, im quoting, support and security to u. S. Personnel. Take a look at this. Long lines of traffic forming across iraq as families and civilians try to get out, flee the fighting. All of this happening as islamic militants battling in the streets of baquba, a mere 45minute drive from baghdad. We are joined from washington by the Senior National security correspondent for the daily beast. Nice to see you, sir. Welcome back. Thanks so much for having me again. Of course. Been reading a bunch of your pieces from this week but specifically i wanted to talk about the piece which you titled practically speaking the country has broken apart, thats a direct quote, from a top official in iraqs Kurdistan Regional government. People had been warning that iraq would break apart for years. Joe biden, then senator joe biden, suggested iraq would be divided in three parts. Do you think thats where theyre going . Well, at this point, you dont want to predict things too much, but certainly its very significant that the Kurdish Forces have been able to secure positions in and around kirkuk which the kurds historically consider to be a kurdish city but has quite a bit of oil wealth in and around it. In that respect, the fact that they were really ten years ago seen as a secondrate militia that couldnt stand up to a National Army has been able to do something that the iraqi army and the u. S. Has spent billions training, could not do, is very very significant in the long run. Slowly but surely, i have been to iraq for three extended trips, you see that this kurdistan region has a lot of the trappings of its own country. There is an airport where they check your passport when you go, they have a very different policy with regard to exporting oil which they do independently of the government in baghdad, and now their forces are securing one of the most important cities in all of iraq. So you have been there, you say three times. I dont know when the most recent time was, but im curious, i know in the regional level you have the tribes or even the sects, how they would feel about iraq being, as joe biden put it, in three pieces. Well, the u. S. Government under both bush and obama, for that matter, invested a lot of money in trying to create a competent Central Government in baghdad, and preserving the borders of iraq. What youre seeing now, though, is with the fall of mosul and the isis forces on their way to baghdad, the failure of one of the most important Iraqi National institutions which is that military, and if the military cannot stop a terrorist group like isis, that really does call into question one of the most important facets of sovereignty which is the monopoly of violence. Right now, the government of baghdad does not have a monopoly of violence in iraq. You bring up the Central Government, Nuri Al Maliki, i was talking to bob baer this week, former cia, and he said he is one of this growing chorus saying no doubt, get maliki out. If he goes, wouldnt there be this vacuum created . I would fear more militants. Well, i think that there is an understanding or appreciation that iraq will have very similar kind of politics as lebanon, where the shiite majority believe they are entitled to the Prime Minister position. But there is a huge difference between maliki who has become an authoritarian and has been impervious and ignored the sunni minority and in many ways acted as a shiite saddam hussein, arbitrarily arresting people, using violence to put down peaceful protests, you could imagine there would be a shiite leader who would be more interested in reconciliation. Certainly an earlier iteration of maliki when he let something called nights charge against some of the militias supported by iran, certainly people hoped there was potential for such leadership in him but they are disappointed. Its possible you could see another leader more interested in that kind of power sharing. A shiite saddam hussein. I had not heard that one yet. Thank you so much. Thank you. Richard gabriel, let me bring you in, the jury consultant and author of the new book called acquittal. Welcome. Nice to have you on, sir. Good to be here, brooke. You worked on the o. J. Simpson trial along with a lot of high profile cases including phil Spector Casey anthony. You say on a stretch of the 405 freeway on a sunny afternoon, pandoras box was opened and the clash of news media, journalism and advertising dollars, public craving, criminal investigations and prosecutions, celebrity culture and constitutional protections was unleashed on our unwitting justice system. We are still trying to close the box. How do you mean . Well, up till that point we had this black box myth which essentially is that the trial happens in the courtroom. And on that stretch of 405 freeway on that day in june, all of a sudden, 100 Million People and then the entire nation and even to a certain extent the entire world became jurors in the case. And all of a sudden, it wasnt just witnesses from are the witness stand, it was the journalists somehow bringing forth evidence. It was tip hot lines. It was the National Enquirer and all of this mixture of celebrity and enter takenment all got thrown into this mix. It became this sort of carnival, and it sort of made it very difficult and quite challenging to actually try the case in a very narrow way the way cases are tried and to a certain extent, i think were still seeing those repercussions today. We have seen much of the carnival like atmosphere for sure. I have to ask you, richard, you were in o. J. Simpsons house not long after ha verdict came down. I want to ask you about that in a minute. People have suggested your work with simpson and specter and anthony was the reason they walked free. As a jury consultant did you help the defense choose the jury for o. J. Simpson that would get you the not guilty verdict . Well, to a certain extent, brooke, the evidence in your case is only as good as the audience you have. And you dont really select a jury. You really deselect that jury. In other words, youre trying to take away people who have a preconceived bias against your client. So i help the attorneys essentially talk to the jurors, find out if theyve already prejudged our clients, and obviously, very difficult in a case where theres been a lot of publicity. You hope to carve away those people and help jurors find jurors that can really just focus on that evidence and hopefully acquit your client. Okay. The o. J. Simpson house after the verdict, what was that like . It was strange. I mean, it was the whole the whole atmosphere was so unusual because theres always mixed feelings that you have after a verdict because youre relieved for your client but theres Great Sadness because its a tragedy that really has occurred. And in approaching the house, there was this bizarre atmosphere outside. There were people partying. There were kids from the westside that were out drinking. There were people that were hurling insults at the house. And there was security inside. And i walked inside, and im sitting there looking at where the evidence was collected, where o. J. Simpson was knocking golf balls and where bloodstains were found and i walked in and saw him, this man who was to a certain extent broken and exhausted and there was not that charm because he had been in jail for a year. I could see him trying to figure out how he was going to live his life in this new identity that was no longer his own. 20 years ago. Your book is called acquittal.
