Pulled troops out now considering, quote, a range of options. Troubled soldier. Bergdahls journals and email paint a picture of what it calls a complicated and fragile young man. Calling himself the lone wolf of deadly nothingness struggling to maintain mental stability, frustrated and longing to travel. You have the layering of leadership and the young man is apparently delusional. Chaos on camera. Knocked down tie vegas cop killers in the final moments. Shot herself in the head. And power vacuum. Hes been a very good leader. Cantors out. Who will take his place as the second most powerful republican . Lets talk live in the cnn newsro newsroom. This is cnn breaking news. Good morning, im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining me. Out of iraq, new fears this morning that the United States could be drawn back into the quick sand of a new conflict. The big story this morning, iraq is saying theyre open for america to conduct air strikes in their country. Terrorists are rapidly seizing the towns where american troops fought and died and marching on baghdad and with the american gains of a long and bloody war erased, the white house a few hours ago says its looking at a range of options to stop this advance. So, who are these fighters who are so easily toppling iraqs u. S. Trained forces . If their military successes are not chilling enough, consider this. The militants so extreme even al qaeda has disavowed them. Our correspondents and analysts are covering the angles of this situation. But lets begin in washington with our correspondent jim accosta. What does a range of options mean . Reporter thats a very good question, carol, and obvious that senior officials here at the white house are increasingly concerned about the destabilizing situation in iraq with this militant operation, the Islamic State of iraq and known as isis and talking to a Senior Administration official earlier this morning and asked whether or not the president is briefed on developments in iraq, this official replied, yes, absolutely. So that gives you some indication. But while we do know that the iraqis are now open to this possibility of u. S. Air strikes, or at least the potential for u. S. Air strikes to control that militant operation in iraq, especially if its creeping towards the capital city of baghdad, it does sound at this point at this moment that the white house is cool to that option. Let me show you a statement that i got from bernadette meahan at the white house. While the National Security team looks at a range of options, the current focus, the key words, the current focus of the skug discussions of iraq is to build the capacity of the iraqis to confront and deal with the threat of isis. Thats an indication that theyre really looking at sending arms, sending weapons to the iraqis and just last week we can point out that the iraqi ambassadors website, to the u. S. Twitter handle, put up these pictures and show you of f16, u. S. F16s that the Iraqi Government was accepting just last week. Those f16s wont arrive in baghdad for another couple of months. But it just goes to show you that the u. S. Is at least at the moment ramping up military assistance to the Iraqi Government if not calling on those air strikes at this point. The white house it appears at this moment carol just not there yet. All right. Jim acosta live from washington. Nic robertson in amman, jordan, tell us whens happening on the ground. Reporter we know that the Iraqi Government supposed to meet today to declare a state of emergency. Guess what. They couldnt get enough mps to show up to make the vote happen and thats an indication of how divided the country is, underpins the rapid advance through the country. The Prime Minister clearly not in control. Not able to bring about enough influence to make political compromises, to even get a state of emergency declared. Despite that, we have heard from the state television saying that the Government Troops have taken control of tikrit. That city about 100 miles north of baghdad. They say theyve taken control of it from isis but they havent offered any evidence of taking control of it yet. Even if they did, it is a long way from mosul. There are other controls isis controls between baghdad and mosul for the government to be able to reinforce the forces there and also heard now that the Kurdish Forces in iraq have taken control of Kirkuk Province and not sits well for Nuri Al Malaki and iraqis. We are hearing shia militias are being stood up. Deteriorating along ethnic and sectarian fault lines. All right. Nic robertson reporting live for us. I want to dig deeper into the crisis. James spyder marks is a retired Major General in the u. S. Army. Jacob siegel is a reporter with daily beast and an army veteran who served in iraq and afghanistan. Welcome to you both. Thanks, carol. General marks, these terrorists thank you for having me. Youre welcome. Im glad youre here. General marks, the terrorists are vile, the people that tweeted out images of crucifixions in syria. Should the u. S. Get involved . If it does, how intimately . The United States has an obligation to get involved and just not necessarily with military force and diplomatic efforts but the key issue right now is, carol, someone, whether its the United States or its a coalition of the willing needs to step in and stop the bleeding. If the United States wants to try to build capacity for the isif, the Iraqi Security forces, thats a secondary step of stopping and holding the advances in place right now. To build capacity there may not be sufficient time and thats the concern i think the administrations dealing with right now. Jacob, youre an army veteran who served in iraq and afghanistan. After seeing the american sacrifices there, how does this Current Situation make you feel . Well, obviously, the advance of a murderous group like isis not only disturbing to me as a veteran but as an american. And, you know, to see mosul fall and this Group Advance this close to baghdad is its a very dangerous situation. I would just add one thing to what the general said which is that we spent a lot of time in iraq focusing on building capacity in the Security Forces. Thats not a quick process. And i agree that the first step now needs to be facilitating, stopping the isis advance. The problem is, general marks, the United States isnt exactly thrilled with the new Iraqi Government. What must the Iraqi Government do if the United States decides to step in and help . Well, its a government thats sectarian in its policies. Malaki has to be far more open in terms of including sunnis into the circle of counselors but theres got to be real participation and, in fact, shift the dial to what i even describe an overthrust in terms of trying to embrace sunnis and try to get the tribes cooperation to make it stop as best he can. Otherwise, he becomes an irrelevant government leader and he might, in fact, be in exile quickly if the military cannot do what it needs to do which is to take the insurgency on. This is an armed conflict. Very conventional in the nature and got to be able to confront it. Well, jacob, you know the United States finds itself in a difficult position once again. How serious would it be if a city like baghdad falls . That city seems to be next on the agenda. Im sorry, carol. Are you talking to me . Jacob. You know, im sorry. If baghdad fell, it would be incredibly an incredibly dangerous development. I dont see that happening i ii quickly. Clearly, there are isis forces inside baghdad conducting attack wills for months but the malaki process is a baghdad approach and where the concentration of the hard core loyal Security Forces are so i dont think that will happen quickly. I hope not. Jacob siegel, spider marks, thank you for your insight. Thank you, carol. Kicked out of the coast guard and heading to afghanistan for the army. Well dive into bergdahls reported personal journals and the portrait they paint of what some call a fragile young man. Let me get this straight. [ female voice ] yes . Lactaid® is 100 real milk . Com i am the lone wolf of deadly nothingness. Those are the words of former p. O. W. Bowe bergdahl from a series of journal entries, stories and essays written before the time in captivity and given to the Washington Post by a confidant and friend saying she wants to protect Bowe Bergdahl and entries reveal a fragile young man at odds with life in the military. Before basic training he wrote, the closest to ship date, the calmer the voices are. Im reverting. Im colderment about the deployment he wrote, i feel like im pulling away from the human world and getting closer to people. Almost as if its not the people i hate but societys ideas and reality that hold them. I want to change so much all the time but then my mind just locks down. These journal entries make you wonder who is Bowe Bergdahl . Is he imbalanced . Deserter . Should he have been in the army in the first place . Lets talk about this with dr. Terry lyles. A combat stress coach. Welcome. Good morning. Bergdahl wrote some of these things before he ever deployed to afghanistan. What do you make of his musings . You know, i was reading this yesterday as it came out and watching this and even as you were reading it now. It is quite bizarre as you can tell so, i mean, as i i dont read fiction much because life is stranger than fiction every day so i really dont know whats going on with this troubled guy. He has a lot of issues before he was deployed, spending time in alaska before he was deployed but his writings are very alarming. I think to anyone that would read them. Well, we now know, too, he was discharged early from the coast guard. Yet, the army let him in. In retrospect, was that wise . No. I think we would look back and say, no, it was not wise because, i mean, obviously, if he was discharged there was a reason and even friends kind of laughed off the example that he said, it was like a mishap that he was psychologically discharged. Thats a pretty serious allegation to be discharged on so how he slipped in to get into the army i think is answered by a lot of people talking about for dayins to come. They describe bergdahl as eccentric but not mentally unbalanced but the diary says, according to Washington Post, he hears voices. There are journal entries where he wrote the words velcro and zipper repeatedly over two pages. What does that say to you about him . Well, i think psychologically, you have the look under the surface. It is like a lot of us. We all look pretty good on the surface but we have demons and things inside of us. When he is expressing the way he is and the strangeness of those expressions, he is obviously very troubled. Ostracized from his parents for years it appears. Staying on couches in friends homes and the writing is a lost person looking for something psychotically which is troubling. Would this kind of man become so delusional to walk off base in search of the taliban for a deeper meaning . Absolutely. I could see that happening very easily because when one comes delusional in that way and narcissistic in their thoughts and self indulged, theyll do just about anything. We cover stories happening every day. Nothing would surprise me now. We didnt know until really yesterday what was going on inside his mind. Now we can really see he was troubled and probably still is. Dr. Terry lyles, thank you so much for your insight. Cnn has reached out to kim harrison, the friend that released the journals to the Washington Post. She has declined comment. In other new this is morning, two priests attacked inside a Catholic Church. One shot and killed. The other critically injured. Police say it started with a 911 burglary call from one of the victims. Then, when they arrive, they found both priests badly hurt. Javier soto with affiliate ttvk joins us with more. Good morning, javier. Good morning. Just the unthinkable here in downtown phoenix. As you mentioned, one priest is shot and killed. Another one brutally beaten, able to call 911. We got the updates on the names of the two priests. The priest shot and killed is father Kenneth Walker. A 28yearold priest with archdiocese here in phoenix. The one badly beaten, 56yearold by the name of father joseph terra. According to Phoenix Police about 9 00 last night they got a 911 call from the rectory. Let me show you the rectory. Right next to mother of Mercy Mission here in downtown phoenix. That call went in to 8911 saying there was a robbery. That was the 56yearold father terra making that call. Saying he was badly beaten. Once police got here, they found father Kenneth Walker who had been shot and also father terra who had been badly beaten. Both were rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, father Kenneth Walker was pronounced dead at the hospital. At this point, they are a loss as far as suspect information. But late last night at about 11 00 just two blocks north of here thats where they located a vehicle that is connected to the church here. It was described as a mazda tribute. Police cordoned that area off. They went in. No suspects were found inside that vehicle. And they took that to the impound where they will look through it for any evidence connected to this murder. Now, we just got an update and a notification from the phoenix archdiocese saying that they are at a loss. Theyre shocked. Deeply saddened. Asking for the community to pray for both priests. Father Kenneth Walker killed, as well as father joseph terra who remains in critical condition. All right. Javier soto, thanks so much. Still to come, the hue marin crisis on the u. S. Cnns paw lo sandoval takes us there. Reporter sunset in the south texas along the banks of the rio grande on the border with mexico. Shadowy figures emerge from the dark, desperate to cross the river and enter the United States. These are the faces of a humanitarian crisis and the subject of fierce political debate. Thousands of families from Central America are flooding the nations southwest border overwhelming immigration officials and resources. Most shocking, thousands are children as young as 4 traveling alone. A note pinned to the shirts telling them to contact the authorities. They rely on what little to carry and on each other. [ speaking Foreign Language ] she says she and her family left guatemala because of what she described as tough times. Also turned herself over to police after crossing the border. Her dream was for her son to get medical care so that he could see properly again. Working in the u. S. Will make that easier. She tells us word is spreading in guatemala some caught released with money for a bus ticket and a date to appear in immigration court. [ speaking Foreign Language ] i heard people are getting passes to stay, she says. Others are not. But officials here say they dont show up for court. They disappear and add to the number of undocumented workers already here. I think theres too much dwelling on the problem and not the solution. Reporter for officers, seeing the children traveling on their own is the most difficult. Im a father of three boys. You know . Men now. But, you know, at the age of 6 and 7, you wouldnt think that a parent would send their child on a thousandmile trek across Central America and into all the way through mexico into the United States. Reporter Sergeant Broyles is a local constable and helped in the local area for decades. Were not having to chase them down anymore. Like i said, theyre family units or unaccompanied children and come over here. They want to get caught. They make no quarrels about being caught. Reporter he says an encounter with Border Patrol no longer means a quick deportation for most who cross but another way to get into the u. S. They hope thats the case. Reporter and driving the border really much of the evening, the hardest part to ignore are the emotions involved. Those two women struggling some point through the tears as they begin to tell the story of their journey and then its not just them but Law Enforcement here on the border. Theyre getting ready for yet another round today, up to 13 people, another 13 people expected to be apprehended on the border clearly adding to the numbers and adding to the frustration, as well. Im interested in the fence behind you. How far does it go . Reporter were not far from the city of mckalin. This is a four, fivemile stretch of the border wall. Its about maybe a block or two from the river. The rio grande thats the divider between the u. S. And mexico not far from here and go through the gap and have access to one of the main roads you see here and not a whole lot of people around. Now, once theyre here, they can flag down help, catch a ride and as you saw in the piece lately, its been really calling on police to try to flag down Border Patrol and get them in custody and then back out on the streets. Carol . Huge problem. Polo sandoval, thank you so much. Still to come, chilling new video, the last desperate moments of the couple who killed three people in las vegas. Let me get this straight. Defense secretary chuck hagel squaring off against the Armed Services committee and a Strong Defense of the Obama Administrations decision to rescue sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. More than five hours hagel walked through the white houses rationale and a Fiery Exchange pushed back on a lawmaker questioning why bergdahl has not yet returned to the United States to face questions. Youre trying to tell me that hes being held at landstuhl, germany, because of his medical condition . Congressman, i hope youre not implying anything other than that. The fact is im just asking the question, mr. Secretary. Ill answer it. I dont like the implication. Answer it. Answer it. Hes being held there because our medical professionals dont believe hes ready until they believe he is ready to take the next step to rehabilitation. He went on to say Bowe Bergdahl has psychological problems and working on in that hospital in germany and hagel acknowledged that the failure to notify congress for the prisoner swap strained relations in washington. I value the defense departments partnership with this congress. And the trust we have developed over the years. I know that trust has been broken. I know you have questions about that. Can that trust ever be restored . Joining me now to talk about that, democratic congresswoman jan gentlemjacowski of illinois. Good morning. Good morning. Has the trust been permanently broke snn. Well, if it is broken it is not broken over this. The republicans have been attacking every single thing that the Obama Administration has done. Lets be clear, carol. We are talking about a Successful Mission, a risky, dangerous mission, not only for bergdahl, but for the team of special operators who made it happen. And yet, the level of anger, the prosecutorial tone taken after this Successful Mission is inexplicab inexplicable, really, to me. I understand this idea they wanted to be informed but any leak would have ended the negotiations. And so, maybe he should have done better. Maybe we should have been informed, but at the end of the day i think chuck hagel is right, second hagel, saying we did the right thing and we did it for the right reasons. But so much of this controversy could have been avoided if someone in congress had been consulted with or informed. You know . Because this deal was in the works for months and months and months. I want to assure you that if it werent this, it would have been something else. You know, theyve chuck hagel talked about how offended and disappointed he was that theyve that some people have actually treated the family so poorly. The mother and father. And at one point in yesterdays hearing a colleague, jackie spear said, can we think for a moment how we would be responding if this was our son being held . Again, this worked out properly. We brought home the last detainee held captive in afghanistan. This is good news. They would have found something, carol. Well, let me just put it to you this way. Now the situation in iraq is getting really bad and the United States is being asked to help by the Iraqi Government. So, congress and the Obama Administration i would assume would want to Work Together on this problem. But now that theres this trust issue, cant you see that might rattle lawmakers, rub them the wrong way, because congress does need to be informed of these things. Congress was informed. This was in the works. There were several resolutions. In the house and the senate. Calling on the president to do everything he could to bring this soldier home. And so, there was there was information. Not at the very last minute. But and yes, is there a lack of trust . Yes, there is. And the republicans have been mistrusting this president from day one. So this is not a new issue. On the other hand, i do think, yes, certainly, with iraq, we need to consult. We need to talk about how we end the fighting in afghanistan. There are lots of things and as a member of the intelligence committee, i assure you that those things are thoroughly discussed. I guess my last question would be, you know, its easy to say theres a mistrust there and been there forever and this sides fault or that sides fault but some point doesnt the trust have to be restored and i guess ill ask you how you think that can be done. Well, look. Secretary hagel actually said that he knows that theres mistrust. I think there was concern about the urgency of the mission, the danger of this mission, and the need for it to be done quietly. And so, you know, should he have informed is this what it gets down to . That whether or not they feel that they were told properly. The soldier is home. The mission was successful. No one was hurt. And these the taliban are in qatar and theyre being monitored. Their activities are being limited. This worked out well. Lets celebrate that and move on and, yes, establish better communications. Congresswoman, thanks so much. I appreciate it. Thank you, carol. Im back in a minute. [announcer] play closegood and close. Help keep teeth clean and breath fresh with beneful healthy smile snacks. Right now, the House Veterans Affairs xhilt tee holding a hearing on capitol hill to try to figure out why the va is so dysfunctional. This comes after the fbi launched a criminal investigation into wrongdoing. The Senate Just Passed a va reform bill. Veterans waiting for care can now more easily go to private doctors and send the bills to the va. And 500 million set aside for new doctors and nurses to work at va facilities. Cnn first broke the story of delays at the va seven months ago. Joining me now is chris freights and senator dan coats on capitol hill. Welcome to both of you. Thank you. Chris, lets start with you. What exactly is the fbi looking for . Well, ill tell you. The fbi will probably start in phoenix, carol. Theyre going to look for a number of things. We have allegations that they shredded documents, theyre covering up and hiding how bad the situation was. And while the department of justice hasnt called for a fullscale investigation, like some lawmakers have, i think, certainly, this amps up the investigation into what exactly happened in phoenix and we expect that that will spread to places like fayetteville where the Veterans Affairs secretary will be today. We expect this will be a bit of an apology tour and to show that hes really rolling up his sleeves because here in fayetteville, some of the longest wait times around the country. 3,500 veterans waited 3 to 4 months for care and this is the first time that the acting secretary is going to come out publicly after that very damning audit of this week that showed that nationwide 57,000 veterans are waiting for care. And i think the other thing to watch today is that the acting secretary will be with North Carolina congressmen and women and some of the same folks calling for his predecessors head before Eric Shinseki had to step down, carol. Did you think youd have to move to do such a thing to get the fbi involved . No, i didnt. I knew there was dysfunction at the va. We have 550 cases of veterans not heard and getting the benefits or health care they need but i didnt think it would be this systemic all through i think the audit proved that it is. We need as a former veteran, i want to look out for the care of my fellow veterans. As a senator, i want to make sure we do this right so it doesnt happen again. And youre very involved in this Senate Reform bill. Theres certain things in it that you like and some thing that is are not in it you wish were. Can you explain . Well, its a great first step but i think we need a total look at the whole system. Its another government bureaucracy run amuck. It doesnt efficiently do its job. Spends a lot of money that doesnt go directly to veterans care. I think we need a scrubbing from top to bottom. Its not just firing the top guy. This bill gives us the opportunity to provide the investigations and the outside information and reports that we need to make better decisions. Most importantly, instead of waiting for months and months and months and some of them not dying in the process or their illnesses getting worse. Those are two very important steps, but its just the start of the process where we have to reform the entire v. A. And chris, a final question to you. Is there a timetable on this criminal investigation . Not yet, carol. The doj hasnt opened a fullscale criminal investigation. They generally like to have the v. A. s own independent investigatory arm. They like to let them finish their investigation. And if theres anything that indicates there may be something criminal that happened, thats generally when the fbi and the doj will step in. All right. Chris frates, senator dan coats, appreciate you being with me. Im back after a quick break. Im jane and i have copd. Im dave and i have copd. Im looking at it right now because you can go in and basically watch all of the scores as they come in based on the teams that you like. Now, the first time you launch one of these apps, you tell them which is your Favorite Team or which country youre rooting for, and then it kind of keeps tabs on it for you. Then it will send you a push notification every time that you need to check in, take a moment, tell the boss youve got a spreadsheet to look at. I dont know. Yeah, that will work. Yeah. Isnt that how it works . Yeah. We also found this great app, its called player. Ive got it here on my ipad. And its just a whole bunch of video thats coming in throughout the day and throughout the course of the world cup. And also, this is something pretty cool. Google has gotten in on the action. You can go to google maps, you know, we love the streetlevel maps. But on google maps, they actually let you take 3d kind of interactive tours of all of the world cup stadiums down there in brazil. So if you cant get there, you can get there virtually from your desk. Interesting. Thanks. Im going to i have those tvs at work so im lucky. I can sit at my desk and watch it, yeah. Brett larson, thanks so much. I appreciate it. The next hour of cnn newsroom after a break . Yes . Starts now. Happening now in the newsroom iraq 2. 0. This is no longer a messy situation. This is a catastrophe. A country in crisis. Terrorists taking control of cities. One by one. America two years after we pulled troops out, now considering, quote, a range of options. Troubled soldier. Bergdahls journals and email paint a picture of what it calls a complicated and fragile young man. Calling himself the lone wolf of deadly nothingness struggling to maintain mental stability, frustrated and longing to travel. Youve got this layering effect of leadership that should be looking at this young man who apparently is a bit delusional. Chaos on camera. Hes not down. The vegas cop killers in the final moments. Just shot herself in the head. And power vacuum. Cantors out. So who will take his place as the second most powerful republican . Lets talk live in the cnn newsroom. Good morning, im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining me. Breaking news out of iraq. New fears this morning that the United States could be drawn back into the quicksand of a new conflict. The big story this morning, iraq is saying they are open for america to conduct airstrikes within their country. The white house, just a few hours ago, only saying that its considering a range of options. Terrorists are rapidly seizing the towns where american troops fought and died, and theyre now marching on baghdad. In red, the area now held by militant fighters. In yellow where the fighting for control still rages. And if their military successes are not chilling enough, consider this. These militants are so extreme, so vile, even al qaeda has disavowed them. Our correspondents and analysts are covering all angles of this rapidly deteriorating situation. Lets begin with our Nic Robertson in ahmmman, jordan. Reporter theyre saying they have scores to settle. The commander has told them not to give them any ground, not even a hands width. Weve seen the Iraqi Government fail to even get together to vote on calling a state of emergency. It shows the level of political breakdown in the country. We have seen shia militias being stood up so that they can protect shia religious shrines. Again, it shows the deteriorating and growing sectarian underpins the rapid gains here. Weve also seen the ethnic the kurds in the northeast of the country take up positions where the Government Forces have pulled out, significantly in the town of kirkuk. Its a hotbutton issue as to who should have control over it. All of this all of these, a destabilizing influence, staggering that while on the one hand, the government of iraq say it is open to usairstrikes to come in and help them, yet they cannot even help themselves by getting together and agreeing to vote on a state of emergency, carol. Just to give us an idea of the scale, how many of these terrorists are in country fighting, and how large is the Iraqi Military . Reporter well, the initial estimates were hundreds. Theres possibly the figure may run to thousands. But what you have to look at here is that theyre getting the support of sunni tribesmen. There was one video i looked at earlier today, and it showed what was purported to be a commander talking to what looked like dozens, perhaps 100 or so, young men who held respect for him. They werent fighters. They were the local men in the town. So while they have maybe several hundred, maybe a little more than that fighters, they have support from the Sunni Community or some parts of the Sunni Community. The government, on the other hand, has hundreds of thousands of security, police and army across the country who have been trained by the United States finest Army Trainers with a lot of experience. Theyve got the better weapons. Better weapons than isis, yet they have not been able to put that together. Rather theyve been putting those weapons down and retreating. One video i just looked at, unsubstantiated so far, purported to show a whole line of Iraqi Army Soldiers handing themselves over to isis fighters. Thats yet to be substantiated. But this is the sort of propaganda that isis is putting out there, carol. Very disturbing. Nic robertson live for us this morning. I want to dig a little deeper into the kries and the stakes involved and the options available. Jim sciutto is our security correspondent and from london, charlie cooper, a middle east researcher for a think tank formed to combat extremism. Welcome to both of you. Thank you. So jim, you just heard Nic Robertson. This is disturbing, to say the least. And also, these terrorists, you know, now taking over iraqi cities are so vile. These are the people who tweeted out images of crucifixions in syria. Should the United States get involved . Let me tell you, the other thing about isis is that theyre also the most Popular Group to join for foreign fighters partly because their requirements are so low. You can just kind of come in on a kind of jihadi vacation and join up for a bit and then return home. And this is a real concern because u. S. Intelligence officials have been telling me and others for months that they are concerned about how syria has attracted these foreign fighters. What happens when those foreign fighters go home . Now isis controls territory in both syria and iraq. The rate at which these folks carry out attacks when they go home, maybe its 10 , maybe its 20 , but were talking about thousands of fighters. Some going home to europe. We know of at least 50 to 60 americans that have joined the fight there. So there is a threat to american security. What can the u. S. Do . You know, im told by u. S. Officials now that they are focused on aiding, equipping, training the iraqi army while they are keeping other options on the table. Thats still their focus. You have this request from iraq. The question is will the u. S. Answer that request. Its disturbing if the iraqi army are indeed handing their weapons over to terrorists. It kind of makes you pause. Absolutely. And it also raises a question about that strategy, right . The strategy since the u. S. Withdrawal has been to equip, train and equip, these forces. Now, if those forces, after billions of dollars in u. S. Aid and weaponry and years of training cant stand up to a threat like this, this raises a major question forward. And think about it, carol, not just for iraq but for afghanistan because thats also the plan for afghanistan when u. S. Troops withdraw from there. Charlie, you wrote an oped saying instability threatens the wider world. Why should we, as americans, care . Because the way that isis is so appealing for foreign fighters to come from the eu, to come from america, to come from other arab countries, they present a big threat in that way because a lot of the brigades that isis has, they are singlenation brigades. People who go back to their own countries, and they will have a group of contacts who have fought together, who have been trained together, and its a lot more threatening than, say, just one individual person whos gone to fight in syria. The fact that theyre being trained together is very, very dangerous. And, of course, iraq is in a well, you know where it is, right smack in the middle of a h hotbed of countries that concern the United States, including, jim, iran. In fact, ive even heard that some hope iran gets involved and even drives this terrorist group out of iraq, but is that really optimal . Iran is already taking steps, for instance, to close its border because theres a lot of traffic between iran and iraq. You have a lot of iranian pilgrims that go to the holy sig sites. On the positive side, this would be an area where u. S. And iranian interests align, right . They dont want to have, you know, iraq falling to pieces. The trouble is that, you know, if this is where if these are the partners youre relying on now, whether its the army that Nic Robertson mentioned that trust me, caused a lot of trouble in the mid2000s in iraq and iran which, of course, we have a troubled relationship with, you know, if these are the secrets to solving this problem, thats a real challenge going forward. There are no good or easy solutions. Absolutely. But charlie, ill ask you the tough question anyway. If the United States chooses to get involved, what should it do . I think it should stay clear of intervening militarily because obviously the u. S. Has a past in iraq, and its not popular among the iraqi people. What the u. S. Should do and what it must do is put pressure on the maliki government to revolve, reintegrate the sunni tribes that nic mentioned earlier, reintegrate them into the government. Because since the u. S. Left a few years ago, maliki has marginalized them. Hes focused on sustaining the shia areas more than the sunni areas. So they need to be brought in economically, socially, infrastructurally. And thats the only way that you will be able to begin to combat the narrative of isis, which is very strong right now. But i do think that if anyone is to intervene, it should be an arab country, perhaps turkey but certainly not a western country. Charlie cooper, jim sciutto, many thanks to both of you. You can see charlies oped and all the latest developments on iraq on cnn. Com, cnn. Com opinion for charlies oped. We have a new window into the mind of Bowe Bergdahl before he was taken prisoner by the taliban. Newly revealed journal entries given exclusively to the Washington Post by a friend of bergdahls gives us new perspective into the mindset of a soldier at the center of a national uproar. This is one of those entries. Quote, i am the lone wolf of deadly nothingness. These words paint a stark picture of the thenarmy private in the year leading up to the day that bergdahl left his post. By his own account, bergdahl struggled in the military. Before basic training, he wrote, quote, im worried. The closer i get, the calmer the voices are. Im reverting. Im getting colder. My feelings are being flushed with the frozen logic and the training, all the unfeeling cold judgment of darkness. Then with unorthodox spelling, bergdahl expresses feelings of alienation, quote, trying to keep myself together. Im so tired of the blackness, but what will happen to me without it. Bloody hell, why do i keep thinking of this over and over. But according to these writings, bergdahl apparently had some kind of plan, just three weeks before his capture, he emailed a friends daughter saying, quote, im good, but plans have begun to form. No time line yet. Now, when the friend asked bergdahl what he was talking about, his response was cryptic. Numbers and letters strung together almost readable but not quite. And this may not have been his only plan. According to members of bergdahls platoon who spoke to me on condition of anonymity, the night before he disappeared, he spoke about wanting to become an assassin, walking his way to pakistan or india and working his way up in a gang as a hit man, somehow ending up in the russian mob. At the time the soldiers thought bergdahl was just joking around. He had a reputation for saying some offthewall things. After he vanished, they wondered if he had actually been serious. Confusing, right . Cnn has contacted kim harrison, this friend, the woman who gave bergdahls writings to the Washington Post, but she declined to comment to us. I want to talk more about this. Lets bring in cnn pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr and matthew ho, state Department Official and family friend of the bergdahls. Welcome to you both. Barbara, i want to start with you because some might wonder how Bowe Bergdahl was in the army in the first place. Well, carol, what we now know is that in the months before joining the army, he actually spent about 26 days as a member of the u. S. Coast guard. He was discharged from that very quickly with an administrative or nonspecified discharge. We do not know the reasons he was discharged. That has not yet been made public. Despite all of the speculation, and then he joined the army. One of the questions that has been asked is whether he got some type of waiver to join the army, as many soldiers did back in those days of the troop surge. They needed to get enough bodies over there to meet the quota. We dont have an answer yet. The army says theyre looking through their records to see if he was granted a waiver. Matthew, what do you make of these writings . Some might say hes just a crunchy granola guy and just writing nonsense. Others say it sounds as if he was mentally unbalanced. From your perspective in reading these journal entries, what do you think . Good morning, carol. Thanks for having me back on. You know, i think one of the key things weve got to remember, these are just journal entries. Its not the whole journal. But certainly it is a little troubling. They match up with some of the emails that were reported on that he sent to his family. In the Rolling Stone article that Michael Hastings wrote a couple years back. What i think it does and remember, too, kim harrison, the young lady who released these journals, she did this because she wanted to prove that bowe was not a deserter. And so you have to frame it in that context, too. And i think its very helpful because it gives us a very humanizing glimpse into his life. This shows a young man who is 22, going off to war, or at war. And it reminds us that this is a very, very personal story set amidst the madness of war. All of us who served over there have had feelings like this. You have feelings of being alone or being against something that you cant undersand or feelings of immense hope. You have romantic longings, you know, to see people again or to travel, to get away. So i dont think we should be too surprised at the tenor or tone of this. It may indicate that he did have some problems. But again, it doesnt really prove anything about what happened, and thats what were still waiting to see. Barbara, i will say, if he was indeed a fragile man or he had some mental problems, admitting him into the army and sending him into afghanistan and making him a member of a platoon endangered all of the people he fought with. Well, look. Lets i think its really important to stick to the facts that we know, which are very minimal at this point. We have no direct knowledge that he had psychological problems. These are his writings. You know, were not medical doctors to be able to evaluate this. And i agree with matthew. I mean, ive spent a lot of time with troops in the field, young men and women who, in those very tough circumstances, talk and write Different Things than we are used to seeing in civilian society. I dont think theres any indication that while he served in his unit, he was that we know of that he was a danger to anybody. All right. Barbara starr, matthew hoh, thanks for the insight. I appreciate it. Thank you, carol. Still to come in the news room, the Phoenix Diocese is calling it a senseless act of violence. One priest dead, another critically wounded. Police say it started with a 911 burglary call. When police arrived, they found both priests badly hurt. The reverend Kenneth Walker who was shot died later at a hospital. Cnns Victor Blackwell has been following this story. I just cant believe this would happen inside of a church. Its heartbreaking. We see the video of the parishioners just standing in groups in the parking lot, really in shock. We know that father tara who was one of the two people who was shot or injured yesterday, he was the first to alert authorities that something was wrong. He called at about 9 00 to phoenix dispatchers reporting a burglary. But one Phoenix Police arrived, they realized that whatever happened at mother of Mercy MissionCatholic Church was much more than that. Both priests were found injured inside the church but were told not in the santware, reportedly inside the living quarters. Father Kenneth Walker was shot. He died at the hospital. But father joseph tara, officials thus far have not elaborated on what his injuries were. They have not said if he was shot or if it was some other type of attack. Heres what we dont know. Of course, at this point they do not know who is responsible. Theyre searching for the suspect or suspects. They do not know if this, in fact, was a burglary that became violent or if it was something else. They did, however, search for a stolen mazda suv. They have now found that. But again, these parishioners are in shock. Listen to one of them. Theyre fantastic priests. And i cant believe that they have been shot. For one reason, i cant understand what is going on. I just its just amazing that people would do this kind of thing. Yeah. What do they expect to get inside of a church . We dont know. We also dont know if this was random or targeted. So the question here is were they going after something that they knew one of these men had, if it was a personal vendetta . No answer to that question yet. The officials here, they had an opportunity to speak with the priest who is still recovering from these critical injuries. They had a few conversations last night. But since then, the focus has been on his recovery. Victor blackwell, thanks so much. Sure. Still to come in the newsroom, dave brats road to washington. Political underdog, check. Primary upset of the decade, check. Hitting the National Spotlight with a bang, well, maybe not so much. After beating eric cantor in what everyone dubs a political earthquake for the republican party, dave brat found the first 24 hours as the nations hottest political star can be tough. You dont get to celebrate for long before the serious questions start. Should there be a minimum wage, in your opinion . Um, i i dont have a wellcrafted response on that one. Let me ask you about something a Foreign Policy question, arming the Syrian Rebels. Would you be in favor of that with u. S. Military helping to arm the moderate Syrian Rebels . Hey, chuck, i thought we were just going to chat today about the celebratory aspect. Id love to go through all this, but my mind no, i understand that. But i just want to get a sense of i love all the policy questions. Id be happy to do more, but i just wanted to talk about the victory ahead, and i wanted to thank everybody that worked so hard on my campaign. Okay. So following that stumble, brets twoperson staff canceled an afternoon news conference, opting instead for a statement. Add that to this. The Facebook Page of brats Campaign Manager has reportedly been completely wiped clean of some provocative posts since brats win. So lets talk about this. Joining me now is larry saboteau. Hi, larry. How are you, carol . Im good. Should the voters of virginia be concerned . Well, they should be concerned if it continues. You know, its the old line about dr. Johnsons dog, right . Its not how well he walks. Its the fact that he does it at all. This guy has only been in the periphery of politics, and he took down the House Majority leader. Everybody knows it was a negative vote. Everybody knows that people looked at that ballot and saw eric cantor and the other guy. And they decided to reject eric cantor, and they voted for the other guy. Well, now the other guy has a very good chance to be the congressman from the 7th district at least for two years, and every word he utters, every word he writes, every word that his staff utters and writes will be put under the microscope. Welcome to the real world of politics. I think the thing that disturbed me, hes an economics professor, and he couldnt explain whether he supported the minimum wage or not. And you know, professors, as you are one, larry, theyre people with plenty of strong opinions and not afraid to share them. Yeah, well, this is what ive said about economists for years, carol. Im just kidding. We often criticize economists in the field of political science. But, look. Dave brat and i dont know him personally, but i certainly know what he does because hes a professor he has a gigantic change of focus coming. And he has to get used to it. He cannot just lecture wildly anymore and say anything that comes to his mind. You know, like i do. He has to actually be in the role of representative. And he has to remember why eric cantor lost. Eric cantor lost because the people at home didnt believe he was representing them anymore. He was all about power. So dave brat has a very, very steep learning curve here. So hes headed towards the general election, and of course hes running in a very conservative district. But he has a twoperson staff, and most of the people who are helping him are in their early 20s. Thats going to be difficult, isnt it . It will be. I suspect at some point youll have Interest Groups and the Virginia Republican party, in the National Republican party coming in to lend him a hand because they cant take this for granted. It is a republican district, but the people in that district have now shown that they are rebellious, and theyre watching carefully. To tell you the truth, carol, his real test is going to come in two years. He is a novice. And there are a lot of hungry, experienced officer holders who are republicans who are this very day, carol, talking about challenging him in the primary in 2016. Yup. Welcome to the world of real politics. Couldnt some republican be a writein candidate . I mean, if its not eric cantor, it could be someone else, right . Sure. If eric cantor said hes not going to do it, and he shouldnt because he would lose badly. Frankly, i think anybody else would lose. In order to win a writein campaign, you have to be an incumbent who is seen as someone who has done wrong in a primary. Think senator Lisa Murkowski from alaska who won her seat again running as a writein candidate after she was ousted in the primary by a candidate who turned out to be unacceptable to most alaskans. Thats the kind of unique circumstance you need for a writein to succeed. It isnt going to happen. Its just not going to happen. It would split the republican vote, but thats a pretty republican district. Brat has to be installed as the clear favorite for november, but thats just term one. You know, im sure he doesnt want to be a twoyear congressman, a oneterm wonder. Well see as we watch the next chapter unfold. Larry sabato, thanks, as always. Iraq state tv now reporting that the countrys air force is bombing insurgents in and around mosul. The second largest city in iraq. Just in the last few days, a sunni group has taken hold of the city on their way to baghdad. Earlier iraq said they are open for america to conduct air strikes in their country, but the white house only says that it will consider a range of options. Were also learning that insurgents driving 50 vehicles have now surrounded one of iraq a oil refineries. Sounds like deja vu all over again, doesnt it . Not in a good way because that offensive is now having a Significant Impact on oil prices, and you know what that means. Cnns Christine Romans is following that part of the story for us. Good morning. Good morning, carol. Investor s nervous by what theyre seeing in iraq. Why would that affect whats happening . Because iraq is a big producer, 3. 3 Million Barrels per day, the second largest opec producer behind saudi arabia. There is the chart. You see the surge so far in oil prices. Now 106 a barrel when you measure it on the nymex, the crude oil markets here. And thats the highest in about nine months. So a great deal of nervousness there. There had already been some supply disruptions and pipeline closures in the north earlier this year. So a lot of the oil analysts were talking to say its not that big of a surprise that there are some problems here, but the depth and the duration now of these problems is a big concern here. Theres a lot of oil coming out of the south, the Southern Oil Fields of the country now. The problems in tikrit and mosul, and in transporting the oil even by truck to jordan, those are still something thats a big concern. But overall, overall experts say they hope that oil exports will still be increasing this year. But when you see pictures like this and when you see armed convoys around refineries, thats why you see such nervousness in world markets. Carol . I understand that. Christine romans, many thanks. More breaking news, this out of sao paulo, brazil, where the world cup will soon get under way. Millions of fans from all over the world are in attendance. And this morning their safety is at risk. Large protests have broken out, and they have turned violent. This is a picture tweeted out of one of our cnn producers who was injured as police fired stun gun grenades at world cup protesters. Now, the protests are taking place the protests are taking place near the site of the opening match between host brazil and croatia. Cnns Shasta Darlington was in the middle of that protest. Watch. Reporter the police fired tear gas. They ended up arresting one person. It looks like protesters want to start get moving, and theres some pushing back. As you can see, if they shoot gotta to go. That hit my arm. Okay. We also have some twit pics. This is much more serious than it appears. In fact, the cnn crew was hurt pretty badly. Theyre being treated now by doctors. Alex thomas joins us now from sao paulo. You can oh, you can see shasta there with blood on her arm. Tell us more about what happened to our crew. Reporter carol, strange mix of partying and protests here on the opening day of the soccer world cup. Youre showing that footage to our viewers, and i can tell you that they are safe. Thats the first thing to say. But they were covering those protests, and the police have been out in force all morning here in sao paulo. Massive security operation under way. And the tactics that local police like to adopt is to get in and break up the protesters first, even if theyre being peaceful, they like to be preventive for Security Forces here to avoid protest groups getting too big. So theyve been using flash bombs and tear gas canisters. And we believe its one of the canisters that may have hit shasta and her producer, barbara banatides. They were both slightly hurt, have had to receive medical attention. For the moment theyre off the streets, not reporting for cnn while they get medical attention. But theyre only minor injuries. They will both be fine. I thought that was shasta, but is that barbara . Thats barbara, right . Okay. I hope theyll be fine. But thats really scary. What are these people protesting, alex . Reporter theyre really protesting about the colossal cost of staging this soccer world cup. Fifa, the organizing body for world football, has many demands. And the costs this world cup has been more than 11 billion. It does include infrastructure like new roads and transport systems that will benefit the country as a whole going forward. But theres huge social inequalities in this country. And many people are protesting that while the rich are getting richer, the poor are suffering and spending billions of dollars on essentially a sporting event even if it is the biggest on the planet. Its not the best use of that money. Hence the protests. We spoke to kafu, the man that last lifted the world cup trophy when they won their fifth title in 2002. He says he understands why the protesters are doing what theyre doing. He himself comes from a poor background. But hes asked the protesters to leave their objections to one side and let brazil welcome the world with open arms to enjoy the festivities of football over the next 4 1 2 weeks. Alex thomas, stay safe. Thanks so much. Fully consistent with u. S. Law, u. S. Interest in the core values of the u. S. Military. Thats how defense secretary chuck hagel describes the prisoner swap to free Bowe Bergdahl during a capitol Hill Briefing that at times turned quite fiery. Through it all, hagel defended the administrations actions while admitting one point of contention, notifying congress could have been handled better. We could have done a better job. We could have done a better job of keeping you informed. But i urge you to remember two things. This was an extraordinary situation. First we werent certain that we would transfer those detainees out of guantanamo until we had Sergeant Bergdahl in hand. And second, we had Sergeant Bergdahl in hand only a few hours after making the final arrangements. In other words, didnt have time to inform congress. Joining me now, democratic congressman adam smith of washington, Ranking Member of the House Armed Service committee which hagel testified before yesterday. Welcome, sir. Thank you for having me on. I appreciate the chance. I appreciate you being here. So chuck hagel admitted that this has affected the trust between the administration and congress. Can you repair that trust . Is it possible . I think its always possible. I mean, its a matter of the white house reaching out to congress more consistently, consulting us and informing us of what theyre planning on doing. I mean, look. I agree with the exchange. A very, very difficult decision. But in this situation, you do everything you can to bring the men and women who serve in our military home. And i understand that. But i dont think theres any reason why they couldnt have at least on some level consulted with and informed congress about what they were thinking about doing. If there are no consequences, how can you be assured that this sort of thing wont happen again . Well, you know, we cant be. And look, you know, i was honest in the hearing yesterday. This is not an isolated incident. The white house, i think, has not done a good job of working with congress. I mean, obviously, theres been a high level of contention, particularly between the house and the white house on a bunch of different issues, but that doesnt get better if you dont talk. So i think on a number of National Security issues, the white house would be better served to reach out to us. You know, its not irreparable. But its something theyre going to have to work on without a doubt. But i ask you that because this morning iraq is in crisis, and the white house says its looking at a range of options to deal with militants. Are you concerned that, one, the United States could be drawn into another conflict in iraq, and two, that the decision to do so would not involve congresss input . Yeah, im very concerned about everything thats going on. I mane, theres a sunni shia civil war going on in iraq, in syria, in lebanon, and it is very, very dangerous. And we have to measure that threat and make sure that al qaeda doesnt find safe haven from which to attack us again. And theres going to be a bunch of different options to consider. And yes, i think it would be very important for the white house to Keep Congress informed about what theyre considering. Now, understand there is the authorization for the use of military force that we gave to go after al qaeda, the taliban and associated forces. So congress has given the president some power in this area. But its not just a matter of whether or not its the law. Its a matter of keeping congress informed so that we can Work Together to confront the National Security challenges that we face. And thats what i hope the white house will do, work with congress. The Iraqi Government wants america to perform airstrikes over its country. Would you be open to that idea . I would be very, very reluctant to dive back into that. Wed have to see what the circumstances are, what the threat is. You know, is this a core threat to the u. S. . Are the al qaeda militants in iraq threatening the u. S. In some way . Otherwise wed being dragged into a war in a very, very difficulttopredict way. Id be reluctant to do that, but id have to hear the case. Well, right now we understand that militants have surrounded an oil refinery, and thats reflected in the cost of a barrel of oil already. So thats a big concern that what affect american interests. Yes. Theres no question that the chaos and the disruption there has an impact on us. What i was referring to was whether or not were talking about al qaeda militants who would then be plotting and planning to directly attack western targets like even the homeland. Thats the big threat that we have to be concerned about. And then also, you know, we have to be mindful of what impact we can have diving into the middle of, like i said, what is a very, very broad sunni shia civil war. Can we affect it in a positive way that protects our interests . Its something i think we should be very careful about. Democratic congressman adam smith of washington, thank you so much for being here. Thank you. Okay. Listen to this disturbing statistic. According to unicef, more than 150 million young girls and 73 million boys are sexually assaulted every year. Children in conflictaffected countries are the most vulnerable. And shockingly, few perpetrators are ever prosecuted. The Actress Angelina Jolie is working to change that. This week shes taking part in a global summit in london with the goal of ending Sexual Violence during war. Jolie sat down with Cnns Christiane Amanpour about why she got involved. You are moved by someone you meet. And for me, it was it was time and again meeting young girls, boys and women and men who talked about publicly could talk about all of their pains but privately would become very emotional and tell me about the rape and what had happened to them or the child they couldnt you know, they couldnt tell that the child was a child of rape or they couldnt they simply couldnt function anymore, and they carried this deep shame and this deep pain. And it was just too many. It was just one too many. Jolie is calling for the International Community to make holding those responsible for Sexual Violence a priority. Ill be right back. Yeah, girl you know, ive been thinking about us and, uh, i just cant fight it anymore its bundle time bundle mm, feel those savings, baby and thats how a home and auto bundle is made. A million fans will watch the world cup and hopefully enjoy the wonders of sao paulo. But this morning violence broke out. There are hundreds of protesters protesting the cost of the world cup because so many people are poor in that country. Our Shasta Darlington and her producer, barbara, got caught up in the madness. Take a look. The police fired tear gas. They ended up arresting one person. It looks like protesters want to start get moving, and theres some pushing back, as you can see, we may have if she shoot the gotta go. It hit my arm. Those were flash grenades used to break up the crowd. Thats her producer, barbara. She had to be attended to. She was hurt in this demonstration. And i want to bring in correspondent with the bbc, weir davies, because he helped barbara. And wed just like to thank you publicly for doing that, weir. Its my pleasure. She was lying on the floor. I had to do something. She was in a pretty bad way. What happened . Well, the police opened fire without any provocation, wale. The protests could have very easily been contained. But pretty clear instructions not to let these protests get any momentum. So theyve shot rubber bullets and stun grenades. And i think the cnn staff was hit directly by one of these grenades. And it hit our producers arm and also made a pretty nasty wound. Luckily there wasnt any tear gas. But as you pointed out, both the journalists here are pretty well trained in first aid, but it was very typical to get her out of there because of the chaos. Eventually we were able to get her out of there into a secure area where she received first aid. How do you get her out . Well, it took some time. We had to stabilize her on the ground. We gave her some first aid and dressed the wound because she had a very bad cut to her arm which is also broken which made it a bit more difficult. And she was in a lot of pain. And eventually police moved her to the side and we were able to get her to a nearby station. They were nearby fire workers nearby. And then Shasta Darlington who is a good friend of mine and cameraman, we were able to escort her to relative safety. Wyre, thanks again for helping our crew. We appreciate it. You stay safe over there, too. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. Still to come in the newsroom, his inauguration heralded a new era in american politics. More than 50 years later, the questions and controversy endure. So lets talk about that. Thomas wayland is associate professor at boston university. He is also the author of severa books including jfk and his enemies a portrait of power. Welcome, tom. My pleasure to be here. What surprised you most when you were researching jfks assassination . What struck me most was just the level of bureaucratic incompetence that was really responsible for ending the president s life and really that responsibility lies squarely on the shoulders of fbi director j. Edgar hoover. There is no way in my estimation that someone like Lee Harvey Oswald should have been within a country mile of the president s motorcade in dallas at deal y plaza that fateful day. So you dont buy into all the conspiracy theorys . No, i think the conspiracy theories are really more, i think, psychologists need to take a look at the people floating those ideas. I think its pretty clear if you look at the evidence in the kennedy assassination that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin. I think where the coverup, if there is a coverup in the kennedy case, comes from the fbi because they had screwed up so badly, because they had let someone like oswald really slip through the cracks. He wasnt even on the fbis security index, which was a profile of known National Security threats to the nation. Oswald should have been on that list. Also, just a few weeks before the assassination, oswald walks into the fbi local office in dallas, texas, and threatens to blow it up. And he actually wrote a note spelling out that threat. An fbi agent did not take it seriously in dallas and simply filed it away. That note was later destroyed after the assassination. A local dallas Police Officer said that an fbi agent in dallas told him that we all knew oswald was a nut. We just didnt think he was that crazy. Youll see it all tonight. Thank you, thomas. I appreciate it. The sixties, the assassination of president kennedy airs tonight, 9 00 p. M. Eastern. Thanks for joining me today. Im carol costello. this hour with berman and michaela starts now.
