Sometimes you hit singles and doubles and you occasionally get a home run. A lot describe that as uninspiring. Does the president want to have an inspiring foreign speech. Did you listen to his speech today . Did you listen in warsaw . This is about American Leadership and president obama is deeply committed to america playing its unique role of leadership in the world. A role that no other country can match. And another talk actually took place to discuss a possible cease fire in the coming days. Lets start with an extraordinary image of obama and putin. What does this tell us. Is obama going too easy on him . The french television, the global pool feed from this ceremony here today put up a massive picture. A split screen behind me. There was a huge ripple of lafter and cheering. They looked across the frame at each other but it boils down to the fact that they did have a talk on the sidelines of this diplomatic and world leaders. Of course it follows oneonone meetings that president pew tin had the other thing that was quite hopeful and seems to perhaps maybe hopefully move the dial is the other clear and critical image and that is of president putin. Again, it was those who engineered a meeting between those two that is a little step forward than where we were earlier this morning. Indeed the commander of nato told me that when he was sitting in the stands, he saw shanko speaking throughout the ceremony with the Russian Foreign minister. Some of the ice has been broken. Some of the positions have been clearly laid out and transmitted to president putin face to face. I think we are turning Foreign Policy into some kind of a game. The two of them have been many, many times, i gather from talking to senior white house official officials look at what has happened in the last few days, putin said he would never accept this as the new government. He has clearly accepted the new head of ukraine. To meet with and to be at his inauguration. Chancellor merkle said she joined obama in issuing sanctions on the Energy Sector if within one month he does not doing what he is doing. I think what is actually happened here is putin has, you know, tried to make good with an increasingly weak hand. He is paying a price. He already is facing more capital flight out of russia in the last two months than he has over the past two years. The stock market is down, the currency is down. Of course not. I think putin is looking much weaker. Do you agree. Somebody by the way who putin probably can do business with. You see what they said. All around. He is sending representative over the ambassador. They sort of said it, you know, through spokes people. No, you know, russia has become a terrible risk to people who want to invest whether they are foreign investors. Heres the thing. Hes not going to annex eastern ukraine. That is going to be a real problem. Get his surrogates to these are not just rag tag anybody group of separatists. These are organized people in formation. The military set backs for the ukrainian authorities so its not a joke what is happening in ukraine. Everybody here has to get them to stop or else play sanctions within a matter of weeks. Did putin get everything he wanted . No. He wanted the ability to dominate ukraine. They wanted to essentially break free of russian domination. He tried to stop that. He tried to stop it first by bribing them with a 14, 15 billion bribe. When the president of ukraine tried to take that, that president was ousted. Now they have elections and a new president who is very prowestern determined to keep what pew tin has gotten out of all of it, which is going be expensive. Has not gotten a particularly good deal. This is the biggest thing he has lost. Ukraine which was really 50 50 in many ways in attitudes towards russia. Now ukrainians worry about russia trying to invade and dominate them. Thats true in poland and hungary. Putin has alarmed people all across Eastern Europe and parts of central asia so i dont think he has won very much. An event that marks dday and normandy. Lets not forget russians with human sacrifice lost more people in world war ii than the united states. Russia paid an enormous price and so did ukraine. And its only appropriate that the leaders of those countries should be armed. Thank you both so much. Just ahead, developing right now, he is prepared for war. We have been told by their military liaison that he does not think that that phone call has taken place. You have to wonder at this point it has been almost a week it sounded like when he last spoke on sunday that they were going to follow the recommendation and suggestion of the military. We just dont know for sure. Do we mow what those suggestions are . And also, we say that bergdahl is improving, do we know exactly what that means . The medical, Army Officials in germany are saying that his health is improving daily, talking with the medical staff and becoming more engaged in his treatment process. Once theyre done with that stage, thats when he will be flown to the Army Medical Center in san antonio, texas, where bergdahls parents will reunite with him there. That initial meeting is one of the most traumatic and emotional aspects. When they do get together for the first time its very likely that they meeting will only last a couple of minutes. Whats your policy . So its called lebroning. Lebron james is taking a lot of heat now. He left the finals last night in a critical point of the fourth quarter. Apparently he got a really bad leg cramp and had to be carried off the court. Social media had a field day. Some haters suggest that the future hall of fame ser a wimp and doesnt have the heart of an all star. Heres the deal. There was no ac during most of the game. It actually broke down. Fans were sweating as much as the players, were told. At times players were running up and down the court in 90 plus degree temps. Im okay admitting that i dont do as much work. They were worried they were going to get heatstroke and if a player had collapsed, everybody would be singing a very different tune. Lebron did collapse in a way and he has had a history of this. He cramped up a lot. You want information. I am giving you information. Youre just laying out the facts here. What about tony parker . He said in the European League they never had ac. We played in heat like this. And then the original boston garden, you remember that place is always steaming. Is it a legitimate issue . That was a tactic. When he was with the lakers, they would crank it up and they would turn down the ac. They crank up the bad conditions for them. Look, every players body reacts a little differently. There will be people coming out today saying that lebrons lean muscle mass makes him more susceptible to cramps. He was tested for this in high school. He did used to cramp up so much. There was nothing wrong with him. He just tries to be on top of it with getting in the extra salt intake that you lose when you sweat, extra potassium, water before games but couldnt manage it enough last night. Every player has said, tony parker and members of the spurs said we are more used to hot conditions. Once you do cramp, there is nothing you can do. Every basketball player has backed lebron up on that. There is a lot of people who can relate to cramps, women included. Rachel, thanks so much. Her show airs tonight right here on cnn. A lot of journalists that would love to know what they were saying to each other. This is before the lunch where they met with the heads of state. All the months of tension between these two leaders. So many people wanting to know what is being said right here. The pope has a very strong message for married couples without kids. Pets are not a substitution for children. The message he delivered this week is creating a lot of criticism and a lot of talk. Here is a bit of what francis actually. It is better not to have children. It is better that you can go explore the world, go on holliday. You can have a villa on countryside. Then he goes on to say at the end, this marriage comes to old age in solitude with the bitterness of loneliness. Did you get all of that . I probably fumbled the quote. Amanda will not bumble the quote. She has plenty to say about what the pope said. Basically its a call for procreation over pets. He was touted as a progressive pope. Do you still think he is after hearing this . I think the progressive thing has been overblown from the beginning. He is certainly more progressive on certain economic issues, but, he has the same attitudes about Birth Control, gay rights and whether or not married couples should be allowed to be childless. You wrote, if you could think having children was so important, then why dont you go first . Hes the pope. Hes profamily. Doesnt it make sense that someone would come out and Say Something like this . It makes perfect sense. There is no big surprise here. He is not expressing the sentiment that a lo of people who are not conservative catholic pontiffs also agree with. I think it was a perfect opportunity to push back and talk about the value of being childless. Those of us who choose to go throughout life without having children, we are making this decision for a good reason. For many reasons. Loveless marriages, people that cant have kids, the fact that the animals, i know a lot of people where their animals bring them so much love and lives. T and balance in their do you think they would like to see him come back and address some of these realities and how that might have made people feel . You know, i would love it if he would really sit and think about the arguments from the other side. Why people dont want children, why they might use Birth Control to delay having children, all of those things. I dont think thats going to happ happen. I do think it would be nice if he would acknowledge how hurtful his statements are to couples with infertility problems. I am glad to know that my children will be at my bedside at the end. There is a lot of criticism about what you wrote saying you spewed anticatholic vom it. A lot of believing catholics choose not to have children. Almost all believing catholics choose to use contraception despite the pop forbidding it. Im supporting a decision that ma catholics make and im supporting a belief that most catholics believe with that people should have a right and ability to decide for themselves on whether they want children and how many they will have. Thank you. Just ahead, developing right now, he was prepared for war. A man drives up to the courthouse, he throws out these spike strips. Hes got gas grenades and is firing shots. Police say his home may be boobie trapped. The jobs are back. We have essentially replaced the number of jobs lost during the recession. We will tell you where the jobs are and are not. Ch money do youk youll need when you retire . Then we gave each person a ribbon to show how many years that amount might last. I was trying to, like, pull it a little further. [ woman ] got me to 70 years old. Im going to have to rethink this thing. Its hard to imagine how much well need for a retirement that could last 30 years or more. So maybe we need to approach things differently, if we want to be ready for a longer retirement. We learned that the u. S. Economy added 217,000 jobs in may. The real headline, the total number of jobs finally tops where we were before the recession. It took two years to lose 1. 87 million jobs but four years to gain that number back. Assistant managing editor for time magazine. This sounds good but give us the reality check. All right. The good news is this is now the fourth month of really strong jobs report. Threes a trend in economics. The other bit of good news is the growth is broad based so were not just talking retail or health care but also manufacturing, construction and all kinds of other things. It will allow us to feel like we have more money in our pockets. People can tell that the economy is not all the way back. Most people only believe that things have stabilized or a recovery has started. Most people believe it will take years for the economy to recover. Whats it going to take to get americans to feel like theyre actually back on solid ground. This is an economy that is made of up 70 consumer spending. That goes to this point about wage growth. People have to have more money in their pockets to get Companies Adding many, many more jobs across the economy. The other point that is important is that our economy is very buyer if kated. There are plenty of. Joe s. Joe jobs. Fast and there are plenty of jobs at the top and the bottom, but we need more jobs in the middle. That will take big picture movement. Reading medical charts can be done in india via software. A lot needs to be done getting the job worker and job market trained up. Technology has changed a lot for the good and in some cases, many cases not so good. Thank you so much. Thank you. Well, a man with homemade explosives strapped to his body launched a full frontal assault. He tossed gas grenades. Tear gas is going to blow take cover. Hes down. Hes down. Hes down. Hes down. You heard it right there. Cops did take the suspect down. His name is dennis marx. His home may still be rigged with deadly explosives. Joining me now, nick is right there near the scene. Nick, what are you learning about the suspect, dennis marx . We got here a little while ago and this intersection has been blocked off. The scene is over my shoulder. Police and sheriffs deputies are not letting anyone in. Dennis marx was 48 years old. He had a Court Hearing earlier today where he was expected to enter a plea on a drug charge. He was facing a litany of drug and weapons charges. He had every intention of taking the courthouse over. He was armed with hefy ammunition and supplies. You mentioned the spike strips to keep First Responders from being able to get to him. They believe he was prepared to take hostages had it not been for that deputy standing outside the courthouse doing his round and the swat team that was in the area that responded with within the first 30 seconds of the shooting. Mr. Marx may well have taken over that courthouse. As far as you know, the suspect acted alone . We do know that the suspect acted alone according to the sheriffs office. They do believe, as you mentioned, his house may be boobie trapped with explosives in an attempt to kill more responding officers. This situation is under control but the scene is ongoing. When we were on our way here, our crew and i saw two Georgia Bureau of investigation bomb squad trucks on our way in here to assess the situation. We attempted to get into that scene here but they are not letting anyone in here. The suspect is believed to have acted alone and we are still learning more details about dennis marx as the situation develops. All right. Stay in close touch. Nick, thanks so much. Whats your policy . Many of you know that tv talk show host, Steven Colbert, has a pretty sharp tongue. If you ask him about d day you will see a very different side to him. Recently sat down and saw the other side. Talk about his connection to the invasion of normandy. First lieutenant Andrew Edward tuck iii, his mothers brother, his mother, he was very close with his mother, she died last year. He participated in the invasion. He was part of the 101st airbor airborne. He dropped in behind enemy lines in france eight hours before d day. He survived and he didnt know his uncle eddie, but his mother kept him alive with stories and with a huge volume of letters that uncle eddie wrote home. Take a listen. A lot of these letters start when he is 19. He is dead by 23. And you see his maturation process. It starts off with someone who is proud to be someone who wants to serve his country and get the job done. By the end of it he is someone who has seen terrible things, but is absolutely steel in his conviction that it was the right thing to have done. And wants to keep going. He lives all the way through the war in europe. And then wants to go over to japan. But unfortunately dies before he gets there. Its a side of Steven Colbert that most people have not seen. He gets very emotional talking about these letters. They are just fascinating. Uncle eddie was a member of the 101st airborne. Thats a group called band of brothers and theres a part where hes trying to educate his children and theyre watching band of brothers and theres a letter from his uncle eddie mentioning the main character in the book and film. Its really interesting and very, very moving story. Thats coming up in the hour. I think they will. I remember when his mom did pass away and you probably saw it, too. He honored his mom. He had a huge tribute on his show and everybody was like whoa, there is really a soft side to this guy. You have a special tonight on Bowe Bergdahl . Thats right. Were trying to take it out of the political arena. Look at who is Bowe Bergdahl . We talk to friends of his, people in the platoon, the squad in afghanistan. We did a lot of reporting about his experiences both before and durings his captivity. That is coming up, the Bowe Bergdahl story, not about the politics, not about trying to score points about democrats or republicans. Who was this young soldier . Thanks, jake. Thanks. Speaking of the u. S. Soldier, dont prejudge bergdahl. Thats the message the white house is trying to get out today. The Obama Administration is being criticized. A soldier that some of his comrades say desserted his post in afghanistan but in an exclusive interview, National Security advise or rice warns dont rush to judgment. Lets remember, this is a young man who was taken as a prisoner of war, suffered in captivity and is now trying to begin the process of recovery. Lets let that happen. Lets know the facts including his side of the. Well, i want to bring in retired lee ellis who was held by the vietnamese for more than five years. Wed like to bring him in to talk about this controversy surrounding bergdahl. Frst of all, what do you think about what susan rice had to say . I think its always good to get the facts. I think theres wisdom in that. We have some of the facts on both sides i think right now. Ive been advocating that all along. We just need to wait for more information before we jump to judgment. I think we can have preliminary judgment. Ive tried to hold mine back, for the most part. What are you trying to hold back . That hes a young man in a difficult situation. Im good at making quick, good evaluations but sometimes im wrong. Im a fighter pilot. Sometimes wrong but never in doubt. Im hold enough to know that. I think its a good idea to get all of the facts. I just think that we should approach it and from a factual perspective and not a political perspective. From that, i would say that the army is the one thats going to have to dig in and do the research to find out what the facts were and if he was a deserter, i think they need to hold him accountable and i think thats the way things have to be done in the military. So accountability is important. I think we need to let that take the course. Lets talk about this frail person weve seen and someone were told now has been gived the okay to talk to his parents. Why for just a little bit of time why the wait . Is that normal . Were you surprised by that . Well, my last operation with that personally was 41 years ago. When we came home, we were able to call home within 24 hours and talk to our families. The married guys got to talk to their wives. I wasnt married so i talked to my mom and dad and you were ready to talk and see them and be with them . Right. We went straight to the hospital and got an immediate checkover, a once over real quick and probably meant with a shrink but i dont remember seeing one. It was reasonably normal. They schedule those calls back home for us. It wasnt easy so we used to make those calls then. What do you think of this, that they wanted it to be brief if, indeed, they decide to have communication. Does that seem its a little unusual. I dont understand it. In fact, from the press conference with his mom and dad, i almost got the i mpression tht his father made that decision and he needed to get his feet on the ground before they talked to him. Maybe they felt it was going to be too emotional of a situation. And it could go either way on the emotions. In my situation, and many of us, our emotions were as flat as that table and it was more of a happy but a fairly almost businesslike conversation with our families. Family is probably was the transition hard for you . They were feeling a lot of emotion. What do you think hes going to go through . I think you have to take one event at a time, one event at a time. And if you do have emotions, go for them. For us, for myself and many of my friends who have been p. O. W. S for a long time, we shut down our emotions and it took us a long time to crack open that can and start to let them out. And the quicker the better because emotions are real. And you cant have a relationship with your family if you cant access your emotions. Its not going to be full relationships. So i had to work on that over the years. As a fighter pilot, you had to compartmentalize the good things and bad things. Oh, yeah. Leading with honor, leadership lessons from hanoi. Colonel ellis, thank you so much. Thank you. Well be right back. Turn ocean waves into power. Design cars that capture their emissions. Build bridges that fix themselves. Get more clean water to everyone. Whos going to take the leap . Well, today is the 70th anniversary of dday and earlier today president obama saluted dday veterans at a celebration in normandy. There were also celebrations in new york and d. C. Holocaust survivors are also remembering this day as the start of the end of nazi control. Thousands of people survived the holocaust and one group is working to still help them. As a child, i ran from the killing squads three times. Even now i still dream that i am running. Our entire little town was burned to nothing. My mother and father were killed in the mass graves. I sometimes think it would have been better if i had died with them. I cry at night. Your letters are for me like medicine. These are the last survivors of the holocaust in Eastern Europe. They are out there today, elderly, alone, suffering. They dont have extended family. Life is so hard in these places. They dont have anything. I saw it with my own eyes and knew that no one was helping them so i wanted to reach out and help them. We provide them with continuous Financial Aid for food, medication, and shelter. Stay healthy. And we let them know that they have not been forgotten. This person i am very worried about. His wife is paralyzed. He is so not well. We get stacks and stacks of letters. Mostly in russian. We send money. Were now helping 2,000 people in eight countries. The money is life saving but the connection, the letters, the communication is a life saver. We can really write a more hopeful, final chapter to the holocaust, this one out of compassion, what they deserve at the end of their lives. Happy friday, earn. Jake tapper starts right now. A sideline summit in normandy, france. Im jake tapper. This is the lead. The world lead. They look like a couple at a wedding. President obama and Vladimir Putin cannot avoid each other at dday. The politics lead, more leaks coming out from Hillary Clintons new book. How much trash does she talk about sarah palin . You might be surprised. And also
