With Breaking News after 14 days on the run escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante has been captured in pennsylvania. This is brandnew video Showing Cavalcante in handcuffs as they walk him to a van. He is surrounded, of course, by officers moments after he was captured this morning. Youre also looking just on the left there at live pictures of Cavalcante Being transported now by Law Enforcement. Look at the number of Law Enforcement surrounding him. Huge. That just tells you the story of whats been going on the last several days. Dozens and dozens. Now, sources tell cnn that he was taken into custody without incident in Chester County. You can see right there theyre cutting his shirt off before they are putting him into the police van. Now, at this point other than being told he was taken into custody without incident, we do not know exactly how he was captured. So many of these details need to be filled in. Exactly where was he found . What was he doing when he was found . How did he respond when Law Enforcement came upon him . We are going to find out all this information in the next several minutes. A Press Conference at 9 30 a. M. This morning. Lets get right to cnns Danny Freeman who actually broke the news of his capture. He joins us live from Chester County. Danny, why dont you bring us up to speed on what youre learning. Reporter john, listen, yesterday i came on the air with you and said that we got the update that so many had been fearing, that Danelo Cavalcante got his hands on a rifle. Well, today this is the update that so many had been hoping for for so many days. Cavalcante now in custody. A source close to this investigation first let me know about a half hour ago, now we see these stunning images of him being taken into custody by several Law Enforcement agents dressed in full Tactical Gear, also Pennsylvania State police who have been running this operation, you could tell they also were right there as cavalcante was being brought into custody. We are still of course waiting to learn a lot of information about the exact nature of how they were able to take him in, we are expecting to learn that at a Press Conference around 9 30. I want to tell you a little bit about what we do know at least about the area and the situation that led up to this moment as i said that so many have been waiting for. It seems that cavalcante was captured frankly right smack dab in the perimeter that Pennsylvania State police said they set up over the course of the past 24 to 48 hours or so weve been watching helicopters all morning start to circle tighter and tighter and tighter over one area, maybe about a mile and a half, two miles down from our position at the Northeast Corner of that perimeter and then we were able to, as you saw that footage, see him come up with Law Enforcement in tow holding him right there. The interesting thing that we also have learned by seeing the aerial images and watching the helicopter, it seems that he was around a creek area just perhaps to the west of pottstown pike, route 100 which we are here on right now. Again, we will have to see exactly where he was, how police were able to find him, but it really honestly does seem like the developments surrounding his capture unfolded within the past few hours and then they got him, again, it seems at this point around 8 30 around that time. John, sara . Danny, let me quickly ask you about this. Were looking at these images of him being arrested, it doesnt appear that hes doing anything, trying to resist. Was there any word on how he acted when they finally got ahold of him that you heard from your sources . And just to reiterate on your lefthand side of your screen right there under danny you are seeing the live picture of a drone following the car that they are taking cavalcante back to jail and ultimately to prison, but is there any idea of what exactly happened when he was first captured . Because when you look at these pictures he looks like he is exhausted, he is wearing different clothing Philadelphia Eagles wet shirt. Wearing an eagles wet shirt, must have taken that from someone when going into homes. Any idea of what he was like when he was captured, how he responded . Reporter sara, im going to be completely transparent with you right here. When i called my source to ask the question when cavalcante was captured i got the confirmation very quickly and that person had to get off the phone to deal with the apprehension that we have been witnessing right here so i dont have specific information just yet about how he was brought in or what his demeanor was like when he was ultimately discovered and captured. We will hopefully learn more about that in just a matter of minutes. Weve been talking about this for quite some time. The last sighting of him that was confirmed was back on monday night. There were two sightings that night, first was at 8 00 p. M. , he was described as crouching on a road, police found footprints and then there was that just after 10 00 p. M. Incident where he stole that gun and was shot at. Lets take a moment to recognize what has happened at least in this environment since that particular moment. It was brutally hot for all of tuesday and then overnight it was torrential alley raining for many hours in this immediate area. Its safe to infer that perhaps the weather was able to degrade him in this moment. But, listen, you know, the other thing that i will say just in terms of having covered this manhunt for so long, police have always said that they believe he was desperate. They believe that he had not received any help basically since he stole that dairy van and came up to this part of Chester County. It seems that at this moment once he was captured the as perhaps Governor Shapiro said the other day, the jig was up. And then this is what the scene s but as you also noted just i will say there was a belief that he had that Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt prior to a spate of burglaries that have been cited in this area over the past 24 hours, but certainly makes it a philly area story, thats for sure. So, Danny Freeman, hang on one second here. On the righthand side of your screen we are looking at some tape footage here, you can see all the Law Enforcement involved in his capture and you can see a man on the right there is holding a rifle in his hands. We believe that is the rifle that Danelo Cavalcante had with him, stole from the garage and ran off into the distance and all of these Law Enforcement officers in full Tactical Gear just pose for a photo with the man that they captured and the gun there. So that is what you just saw on your screen. Danny, while we still have you, we have been looking also at the motorcade of Cavalcante Being taken somewhere. Is he going back right now to the prison . Do you know that he escaped from . Reporter so let me first address that last part. There is no way in Pennsylvania State police has been very clear about this that hes going back to the Chester County prison. Right from the start we were asking is that where he would be taken once hes ultimately captured and the state officials say, no, were going to put him in a State Penitentiary and that will be the end of that particular discussion. I dont know, though, at this moment if thats the immediate direction where hes heading. Theres a State Penitentiary in phoenixville which is not far from where we are and, remember, phoenixville is an area that he was seen on that doorbell camera when he changed his appearance and ended up being clean shaven. Im just looking at the maps and looking at where these choppers are right now, it seems he is still on State Route 100 Traveling South of where we are right now, seems like he is heading towards westchester at this particular moment. From everything that Law Enforcement has publicly said to us i would be very, very surprised if they turned to the west and head back to that Chester County prison. I think we are going to see him if not immediately very soon head to a State Penitentiary. Danny freeman, you have been all over this story. Thank you for breaking the news for us and for the community there who has been worrying for weeks now, two weeks now, about whether they will be safe. He has finally been captured. How great is it to have danny who knows the area there as well. That has been so helpful to understanding all of this. Its true. We have our john miller who knows a heck of a lot about Law Enforcement and how it works as well as Andrew Mccabe who is with us today, soon. Im going to start with john miller. First of all, just your reaction of this. We have talked about how long it has taken in the past to capture people, we are talking about far longer than two weeks. Here we are no incident, he looks very calm and he is surrounded by dozens of officers. So i think what youre seeing is what we thought, which is an individual who didnt have a support network, tried to access a support network, old acquai acquaintances, maybe Family Members, but was up able to get anybody to pick him up and move him out of that area. I think from the look of him he looks a little worn down from being on the run for this long. And for how long it was, it basically fits into the model, you know, some of these can go on for a couple of months, most of them go on for a couple of days, but when youve seen determined escapees, particularly in the woods where they have some ability to hang out, a couple of weeks is about par. And annie mccabe, in terms of what we can see with our own eyes there, numbers. You get a sense of the numbers that were put into play for the full 14 days, but i have to say especially the last 24 hours from the moment that cavalcante we knew seized that. 22 caliber rifle, the number of Law Enforcement on the ground involved with this. Yeah, thats right, john. I mean, its a lot of Police Officers in that frame, but it is just a fraction of the number of men and women who are out there risking their lives in the woods, slogging through the brush, trying to find a guy that they knew could potentially be looking at them through the scope of a rifle. 500 was the number that they heard at the last Press Conference about 24 hours or so ago. Thats a lot of folks to have on the ground and im sure they are all incredibly relieved right now. Let me also say weve been as weve been watching this theres been some question as to why they cut all of his clothes off. Theres predominantly two reasons for that. One, he is a very dangerous, desperate person, been on the run for 14 days, armed himself, its wellknown that prisoners before they are taken back into custody often hide things on their bodies to enable them to hurt officers later or to get out of their handcuffs. So you definitely want to take those clothes off when you have an opportunity to do so safely, and secondly, you want to be able to do a pretty quick but thorough bodily inspection to determine, he might be injured from this time out on the run and you want to make sure you document his physical condition before you take custody of him inside of a car where hes locked in essentially with only two officers. You want to make it very clear if he has been bruised or battered or injured in some way, those things happened before he came into custody. All very good points. I was wondering why they were cutting off the shirt. Another reason is for purposes of identification, right there they dont have the ability to run those prints or take dna. Huge tattoo on the back. From his prison records all of his tattoos, that one and others, that they are able to do a visual inspection because particularly if somebody is saying im not that guy, you know, youre going to be able to pretty quickly find out these are unique markings that are unique to him. I think its a bird or a hawk or maybe its an eagle on his back that is very obvious that would match whatever pictures they have of the suspect. I do want to ask you, john miller, about the fact that he had this gun. At some point yesterday when we were listening to the Press Conference the Lieutenant Colonel said we think hes very dangerous, obviously, but we do think that he is on the run and just trying to escape. You said the same thing. Is that the sense you get, because he didnt we have not heard that he has used that weapon and certainly the way that he is acting there is very docile now that he is surrounded by officers. He is not fighting them. So there is a bunch of things we dont know and were going to know them soon at this Press Conference but the key factors are was he conscious, alert and on the run with that weapon when they encountered him or was he sleeping . He has tended to sleep by day and operate on the move by night. So thats a possibility. Did they capture him with that weapon or did they find it nearby . These are the details were waiting for. But the key is and what i got from the source i talked to who confirmed the capture was, you know, the basic information was hes in custody, were okay, hes okay. So it doesnt sound like it involved any serious use of force, but we will hear literally in a few minutes. Andrew mccabe, in terms of what we will hear in a few minutes, what other questions do you have now . I do suppose one of the questions is what kind of help, if any, did he get . Did he seek it . Did anyone tip them off, tip off authorities here in a way that helped them get to this end point . Yeah, so those are all good questions, john. As to the whether or not he received help, you know, youre basically depending on him to speak about those issues. My guess is he definitely will not, right . He is in custody now, he doesnt have to speak, he is entitled to an attorney. So they are not going to really unless he happens to be like overly cooperative, which for a guy who has been on the run for 14 days i think thats highly unlikely. Hes probably being very quiet. As to whether or not Law Enforcement had a tip that drove them to the particular point of capture, were unlikely to hear that i think at the Press Conference as well. I think what we will get and what will be really interesting are some of those facts that john was relating to, like the conditions of capture. If he was on his feet and holding that weapon when Law Enforcement initially encountered him, i think it would be really unlikely that they would have been able to take him into custody without some shots fired. These officers are have been operating at the very limit, right, of their of their care and caution in approaching him, they know hes armed. If that thing was anywhere near his hands it would have been probably very hard for Law Enforcement not to engage him in some sort of a fire fight. So my guess is likely he was asleep or caught unawares and that the rifle was somewhere nearby but not immediately within reach, but, again, those are the sorts of facts that i will be looking for and hopefully we will get some we will shed some light on that in the Press Conference. In less than 15 minutes we will definitely get some light shed on some of those questions and some answers to some of those questions because we were expect to go hear from the Law Enforcement who captured him in the very area that they have been searching. So he had been hanging around that same area, so has Danny Freeman who has been there throughout from the very beginning of this. I do want to quickly go back to you because im curious, i know youve been talking to residents, i know youve been talking to the folks there who have been terrified. Theyve closed down schools and told people to lock Everything Up and stay indoors if they can. Can you give us some sense of what youre hearing that people have been doing throughout this as they worried about a convicted killer who had stolen a gun and was still on the loose for so long. Reporter sara, i think there have been a lot of emotion a lot of the residents up and down this stretch of Chester County where this investigation has really focused. Ive heard on the one hand leading up until the moment of capture of course a lot of fear about an escaped inmate who was a is a Convicted Murderer being on the loose and ive also heard a lot of frustration frankly in the process because their cars were being searched, their homes had Law Enforcement coded all the time and there was frustration because the search continued, the manhunt went on, he had not been captured. But ive got to tell you the flip side of this right now, sara, is you can feel that exhale, you can feel that relief in the area. Weve been standing on the Northeast Corner of the Search Perimeter inside of which cavalcante was ultimately caught and weve seen a lot of the troopers coming back north to one of their Command Posts at a nearby high school, presumably from that area a few miles down the road where cavalcante was caught. You can see it on their faces. They look relieved. Folks in this nearby gas station, residents have been coming to applaud the state troopers. The cars that have been coming by normally sometimes frustrated by having to be searched theyve been honking their horns in support of many of these Law Enforcement officers as well. You can feel that exhale kind of come over this community because its been 14 days of a lot of questions. One of the questions of course was how did he escape really to begin with. We saw the video but how did a corrections guard not see that moment of him crab walking the walls. Then they established a perimeter around longwood gardens, that Botanical Gardens 20 miles down. How did he break out of that, steal a dairy van and come up to northern Chester County where we are right now . But, listen, the police said and maintained yesterday that they believed they had him contained. They brought in a show of force, at least close to 500 officers, we saw Armored Vehicles similar to the ones that you saw in the video of them being taken into custody. They had that show of force, they promised the public they had him contained, this time they were right and we saw that capture take place this morning. Sara. And, again, danny, thank you. Stand by for a second just to bring people back up to speed where we are. Danelo cavalcante, taken into custody this morning. We are told without incident. We are about to learn what exactly that means, a News Conference will be held just a few minutes from now. On your screen beneath sara and me right now you can see live pictures of this Armored Vehicle carrying cavalcante. We are not 100 sure where hes going although john miller suggests probably to a State Police Barracks where he might be processed in some way. A couple things to do. One, its still an arrest, they still have to go through the arrest process. Theyre going to need their own mugshot, theyre going to need to confirm his prints and need to do all those things you do with any other arrest. You cant skip it in this case. Number two, theyre going to need to find a portuguese translator who can talk to him about a couple of things, most importantly, you know, are you injured, health things. They may have to do a medical check there or they may have to take him to a facility or they may have the medical check done where ever hes going to be transported in terms of a prison or jail. What switched on your screen, no longer do we have live pictures of the motorcade, we have pictures of where the Press Conference will be held in just minutes. You also have this tape footage of the moment when cavalcante after he was taken into custody by the dozens and dozens of Law Enforcement officers and importantly behind him you can see a man carrying a rifle its the brown rifle where you see the flashlight on top, that is believed to be the one that cavalcante stole when he went into someones garage, the homeowner was at home, fired at him, apparently missed him according to police, we dont see any injuries on him there, and he was apparently Walking Around with that. We dont no he if that was on his body when he was captured, did he have it, had he dropped it. But they are sure keeping it close to him right now or keeping it within the frame as they are marching him in this video to the police van where he is being led we believe to a State Police Barracks. You will see some of the numbers of Police Officers that are just there with him now. I think it was up to 500 members of the Law Enforcement were on this search looking for this convicted killer. They have now caught him. We do know one place he is not going to be taken and authorities have been saying this, Danny Freeman has been saying this, he will not be taken back to the place where he escaped. What happens, im curious, so that place . This is the second time someone has escaped from that prison. When you saw the video there, someone has got to be in big trouble at that prison at this point. So the warden has been on leave, the Deputy Warden has been in charge. The Corrections Officer who was in the guard tower has been dismissed. So theyre feeling the reverberations there, but you also have you also have a criminal investigation, which is separate and apart by the District Attorney and the state police to see who was in on this. You know, there is a prisoner who is in the front of that frame when he is crab walking who appears to be acting as a lookout. Who knew what, what were their roles, all of thats going to be probed. But your question is institutionally if that is a broken facility in terms of security, whats going to be done to fix that and thats going to require from the county, from the governor a top to Bottom Assessment of where is the staffing, is that a problem . Where is the physical security . Are there repairs that are needed or the fixes budgeted . If not, can the place remain open given the level of prisoners that are there or do the highrisk prisoners have to be moved somewhere else . He was due to be moved out of there. He had just been convicted, he had just been sentenced and he was about to move to a State Facility which was going to be further away and more secure and he understood my opportunity is now. And he took it. Ive been in this jail through the whole trial. Ive been in here since 2021 likely, so im pretty familiar with the potential vulnerabilities here. If i dont make this move soon, im probably not going to be able to make it. John, Stand By For A Second here. We want to bring in a cnn contributor, his mother lives within the Search Perimeter that they had been looking through. Steven, you stayed with her last night. What has that been like in that area over these last few nights . Its been extremely stressful, as you might imagine. Theres been helicopters and planes overhead throughout most of last night and the night before. So im just really grateful that they finally caught him. Did you get that reverse 911 call that weve heard from some in the area saying he had been captured . Yeah, my mom got the call, which was a relief to receive this morning, you know, after being up almost all of last night just trying to keep an eye out on whats on around here. Yeah, and the Police Obviously released a statement as well. And brian from cnn texted me, too, so i was very happy. You had a lot of people giving you some comfort this morning. I have a question for you and if you dont have it with you thats fine. Did you read it out . Do you have it near you . It would be interesting to see what the residents there who had been waiting and worrying for two weeks saw when it came into their phones. I know your mother probably got the alert to be careful. Do you have it anywhere near you . It was actually a robocall. My mom it signed up for alerts and they robocalled her, they didnt call or text me or anything, but i was standing right next to her and it Just Announced that he was arrested and i believe that there would be a Press Conference later today. And we are awaiting that Press Conference. We have live pictures on our screen of the lectern where it will take place. We did get a little new information here, this comes from brian todd who has been on the ground in pennsylvania that Danelo Cavalcante was apprehended shortly after 8 00 a. M. We found out about it shortly after that. This is all within the last 90 minutes that this has happened. Steven, i certainly hope youve been watching cnn all morning long and had a chance to see Law Enforcement holding that rifle that Danelo Cavalcante stole from a garage two nights ago. You of course we have you on a firearms expert. Its a. 22 caliber rifle with a flashlight and scope. Anything distinctive about it that you picked up . Not in particular but i will tell you that, you know, somebody was trying to protect my family here in this area where this search is happening, what concerned me about it was that its a rifle and rifles are effective at long distances. So, you know, thats what really bothered me about it. 22 is not a very powerful round but in a rifle it can reach out pretty far so he could shoot at someone i care about from a distance and thats what concerned me about the whole situation really. You have been there now for a night, your mom has lived through this for 14 nights. Can you give us some sense of how she was feeling during all of this and how sheet feels th morning . Yeah, she was pretty stressed out. Her work told her not to come in, to stay at home, to avoid traveling in the area, the roads are closed around here. So its difficult to get around and, you know, its been very stressful. I mean, he was he was further south initially so it was a little bit, you know, like a problem happening somewhere else and then suddenly he was right here where i dont think anyone expected him to show up. This is, you know, horse farms and woods. Its not clear why he would have come out here, but no one was expecting him and then he showed up and everyone was pretty worried. Well, they had a right to be worried, the authorities were telling everyone to be worried as they were searching for him. Now they can breathe a sigh of relief, go to their regular lives, back to work and school. You brought up something really important, john, you brought up the time you just learned. Just after 8 00 a. M. We had it on tv about 8 30. Thats right. Just after 8 00. John miller had spoken to this. He was trying to run around at night, trying to find his way out of this perimeter at night and likely sleeping during the day. 8 00 a. M. , what are the likely chances here that he was asleep or he was resting . So i think pretty high . I think theyre even. Daylight was upon him and, you know, he has probably been trying to find places that are just far enough out of view to to hide in and what did you see with that team that walked him out . You saw the s. W. A. T. Team, but you also saw two k9 officers, so those dogs had the scent of that Green Sweatshirt. Now, when you are a fugitive on the run under the cover of darkness and the only sweatshirt you can steal from the back of a dairy van happens to be fluorescent bright green thats one you want to use for a very short time but that gave him a fresh scent of him that probably helped those dogs as they did this larger push into that perimeter today. Thats a good point. We want to thank stephen if he is still with us, stephen our firearms analyst here at cnn who spent the night with his mother within the Search Perimeter. You heard helicopters All Night Long, stephen . Oh, yeah, they were flying right over the farm. My grandparents are across the street, too, they are in their 80s and 90s. It was a very stressful night. Exactly what you are talking about, i thought he was probably traveling at night and hiding during the day so i had to be up at night to watch out for him. Stephen, we want to thank you for telling us what you went through. Give mom a hug and your grandparents a hug for us. Youve done what a good son would do. Thank you, stephen. I do want to mention quickly, i was looking at their footwear because thats important when youre traversing this wooded area. Every single one of those officers has on hiking boots as does cavalcante it looks like. And those were recently borrowed from a front porch just before he obtained the weapon. He stole those work boots off a front porch, discarded his prison shoes, which, you know, gave him a little bit more of an advantage. Now, when youre grabbing boots off the porch you dont know if thats going to be a tight fit or a loose fit. Right. But he has them on, all the officers had them on because theyre going through this terrain that is really wooded and you heard there from stephen theres horse farms, all sorts of things, places for him to hide, barns and the like. It will be interesting to find out in the next two or three minutes we are going to hear from authorities about how this all went down exactly, how they captured him without incident. Again, you are looking at live pictures of where this Press Conference would be, we were told 9 30 thats obviously slipping a little bit. How he was captured, what condition he was in, what was the nature of the interaction, how did they find him, all questions that could be answered very shortly. Our man on the ground who has been asking so many of these questions, all the right questions for the last 14 days is Danny Freeman. Danny, bring us up to speed about what youve been hearing the last few minutes. Reporter john, i can report now that we have new information about exactly where cavalcante may be heading at this moment and what some of the next steps may be, this is on the record from Maria Bivens A spokesperson with the state Department Of Corrections. She tells me cavalcante will stay with the Pennsylvania State police for a while, he will be medically assessed very shortly as well, according to the state Department Of Corrections and then after that he will be taken to a state correctional facility. They did not give specifics as to which one at this point, there are a number in the area and of course a number in the state, but thats the most immediate information that we will have of where weve watched this motorcade of this big armored van taking cavalcante, he will continue to be in psv custody and be medically assessed and on his way to an sci, a state prison. Andy mccabe, if you are still with us, talk to us about the federal role here. Marshals have been involved in all of this, but now that hes in custody, you know, do they shake hands and go home . Yeah, its probably a little bit more complicated than that, but not much, right . The federal federal resources are brought in to help that effort on the ground and one of the ways that they establish their Legal Authority to do that is by obtaining what john referred to earlier as a warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. That is a federal crime. If you are fleeing some jurisdiction to avoid being prosecuted, we call it a ufap warrant. The feds would have obtained that warrant, that helps them tactically do the searches, do the investigation, help out vetting, potential contacts of the fugitive and maybe putting surveillance on different locations and Family Members and hopes that the fugitive will make contact to those folks. Once taken into custody typically the warrant gets dismissed, you are not prosecuted on it and the prisoner is remanded to State Custody and either prosecuted on the crime that he was running from or in this case will likely be prosecuted newly for his escape from prison and of course he has a very, very long sentence, probably a Life Sentence to serve out for the homicide he has already been convicted from. The federal assistance is pretty much finished at this point, State Authorities are perfectly capable of taking this guy the rest of the way and i would suspect that he will be held under very different conditions of confinement in State Penitentiary now that he has a record well, theyve been searching for him for 14 days and just to recap, he has been captured, Convicted Murderer who has been on the loose for two weeks now, but has stayed apparently in the area where police have been searching for him. They now have him. He is on his way to another facility. And you are seeing the pictures there of the capture, you see there where his shirt is being cut off. Both john miller and Andrew Mccabe saying that is partly for security also for identification. You will notice that big tattoo on his back, that they are going to look for everything to make sure this is the right guy. This is, they say. He is on his way to another facility to be processed and then eventually to a different prison to go back to prison. Not from the one he escaped from where there is a whole investigation going on right now. Almost certainly under much different circumstances and security than he has been the last several weeks. With you on the phone is Charles Lyman who has been on a phone, owns a farm in that area thats been searched twice i understand in the last 14 days over the course of this manhunt. Charles, are you with us . Yes, i am. So talk to us about what thats been like. Its made us on edge for sure. We have believed hes been on our farm twice, once we discovered that there was things missing in one of our Horse Trailers and rummaged around in there, and another time by my mothers house on the farm, we have a kids bigotry house, playhouse, and the dan is shut permanently on there because the floor is rotten so our kids dont get in there and play and that door was wide open and it definitely appeared that he was in there. So the police had come through here multiple times. We even had the fbi had placed a 70foot antenna for communications on our farm because they were having a hard time with the hills and the landscape of pennsylvania here, they were having a hard time with their communications so we were glad to help with that. But were relieved he was caught. We all checked the farm regularly. My head guy sean lives on the farm, we were checking the hay lofts, Walking Around with guns strapped to us all day long. It is terrifying to hear about the kids tree house and the door being opened. You must have been even more concerned when you heard the news that he at some point in brazil had been living in the trees as well and then you have this thing where the door was opened and he had been rummaging around you believe in your barn. What was missing . Did you notice exactly if he was able to take anything and if you can share with us what it was. Well, in the Horse Trailer its not ours, its one of our borders, one of our clients, she keeps her horse here and parks the Horse Trailer here. Shes very persistent about keeping it very organized and the tach room and she keeps five granola bars in there as reward for her horse when she takes them out on the trail rides and they were missing. I had said maybe you forgot to replace them. She said, no, i always keep my granola bars in there for my horse. He scored a snack off of that. That actually very interesting. One of the questions has been how has he been able to survive on the run. Five granola bars can last a long time. Stealing from a horse. Thats 1500 calories. Thats a day. Theyre not tiny granola bars. She had the good ones in there. He was living on granola bars for a while. Charlie, what was your feeling when you got the word this morning, given that you you know, not only are you in the area, you think hes been on your farm multiple times. What was it like to get the news that he had been captured . Well, were very relieved. My mom is very active on the farm, but she is 83 years old and lives in her house by herself. Our farm is you know, i live in my house, our farm is large enough that it was just nerveracking for her to be in there All Night Long and knowing that he has come through here a couple times. You know, like i said, it was nerveracking. Were glad hes caught. I would have loved to make the reward money. Were going to have you stay there, just hold on for us just one second because we have new information thats coming into our john miller who is here, our superb legal Law Enforcement analyst. What are you hearing from your sources . I know you just got off the phone. Something thats akin to a little more detail and a richer picture of how this went down. What im told from a source is that as they were pushing into that wooded area today it was two teams working together, one from Pennsylvania State police s. W. A. T. And the other from bortac, which is the u. S. Customs and Border Patrol tactical element that was sent up along with many other federal agencies to assist, that they came upon him laying down in the tall grass sleeping on top of the rifle. That they gave him orders and that he complied. Now, im sure we will hear a more detailed description of that, but that was the preliminary Flash Information i was getting from people who were briefed out of it when they came out. Im going to go through that again. They pushed into wooded areas, there were two teams bortac and the pennsylvania s. W. A. T. Teams, bortac is customs and Border Patrol and he was sleeping, as you said he might be because hes been sleeping during the day and rummaging around at night, but laying down on top of his rifle that he had stolen just, what, two days ago or two nights ago. So that is significant information. We are still waiting to hear can directly from those who took part in this capture, but that is really, really fascinating to know thats how this went down. It would explain thats why youre seeing such a calm picture with nobody injured. If he was indeed sleeping that was a surprise to him. Thats interesting. Was he sleeping or was he just laying down on top of that rifle trying to be quiet, hoping that they would go by. Were the dogs a factor in this or not . Again, this is highly preliminary. Right. But we expect to hear the richer version of that in this Press Conference which should be starting soon. They came upon him, right . Does this speak to the numbers of people they had on the ground or does it speak to this is what you hope for in a search as youre putting people through these grids . I mean, this is their third perimeter and an expanded but but also their largest number of people on the ground and, you know, you really have to ask how much of this was attributed to holding that perimeter, excellent planning, having the right people and how much is attributed to luck, and the answer is either way, you know, the harder you work, the luckier you get. You make your own luck, right . I mean, thats part of this. With the number of people, 500 members of Law Enforcement out here doing this from the sky, they were mounted, they used their k9s, all of that may have come into play and obviously this happened in the way that Law Enforcement would want it to happen. He has been caught. No one has been injured according to authorities and to Danny Freeman, and the community can rest for a minute. And they used every resource at their disposal and he was an individual who had no resources. His only resource was his desperation and his will to keep on going. We just learned some of the resources that he was collecting along the way there. To hear the five granola bar for horses that were stolen. Thats interesting. The work boots that got him through the woods, which he has only had for a day which he traded in his prison shoes, which are much less tough. The Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt, which helps him blend in. He is in philadelphia and they are all huge fans. So, i mean, you know, the shaving of the beard and the mustache. He has done a lot to try and survive and get away against a measurable force. Andy mccabe, the information in a john miller just reported there about the moment that he was taken into custody with the pa s. W. A. T. Team and then the federal officers, lying on the ground over his gun. Whats your take away from that . Well, its really you know, its an intense scene, as you imagine it, and i think what jumps out to me initially, john, is the incredible control that officers exhibited in that in that situation. Youve been searching for this guy for two weeks, the pressure on that search goes up every every hour, every minute, certainly every day that it goes on. You know, the developments 24 hours or so ago, understanding that he had armed himself with a rifle that could shoot you from longer distances with a scope. I mean, just an incredible amount of intensity. So when you you know, when you are walking through that bush and youre listening you know, you have a headset on thats connected to your police radio so youre constantly listening to your team leader giving you instructions, pointing you in different directions, youre lessening to other team members telling you what theyre seeing in their field of fire, their direction that theyve been assigned to look, someone comes over that radio with, i think, you knew, there may be something in the tall grass ahead to us, to the right, whatever that might be. Your heart at that moment is pounding out of your chest. And to maintain the control and the discipline over your decision whether or not to fire can sometimes be a very hard thing to do, but obviously they handled it judiciously, they handled it safely and with care. None of them were injured which is your first likely raising his hands first, following commands, thats the first thing you want to look for as youre shouting out to him to raise his hands, if he does that thats an indication that hes cooperating. As soon as he gets up and you see there is a rifle right in the same spot that he was lying, thats one of those moments that splitsecond moment where you have to decide am i in danger here, do i need to protect myself and others, and clearly they made those decisions correctly. So i think its really to their credit at the end of a very long and hard experience, they were still making good decisions to protect themselves and the prisoner, but not to overreact. And, john miller, your information is that he did follow commands. He was following commands at that moment. When they spotted him, they gave him verbal commands, he complied with the commands. I mean, if you think about that, why do you break out of jail . Why do you escape . Its because you want to live. You want to get back to life. Youre willing to go through what youre willing to get through to get out and stay on the run. Its a desperate move, but thats the same instincts thats going to say to you, i am surrounded by a bunch of heavilyarmed people who have an authorization to use deadly force and i do want to live even if its back in jail. He made that obviously calculated decision. I just want to mention again what we are looking at on the screen. On the top left you are seeing what is going to be a Press Conference, we are expecting it at 9 30 it is obviously 15 minutes late. We are waiting for police to come forward and tell us exactly how this went down. Just below that you are looking at the actual car that has cavalcante in it, well, now its turned some sort of blue blueish green. Maybe its getting closer to where its going. He is not going to be taken back to the facility that he escaped from. He will be processed and put into a different prison, a state prison. Then on the right you are seeing video from this morning around, i dont know, 8 something somewhere between 8 00 and 9 00 a. M. , because he was captured we understand at 8 00 a. M. Of cavalcante and all of the officers who were directly involved in bringing him to justice there and you are seeing these videos over and over again because it is pretty stark. Just behind him there, that is the rifle, we believe, that he stole two nights ago from a home with someone in it, from a garage, but he was captured unarmed unharmed just after 8 00 a. M. Just after 8 00 and the police said with no incident. We are hearing from john miller all of how that may have happened and im not sure what this picture is. We have a new picture. What is this . Lets bring it up. Okay. So he was found near this pile of logs and debris. According to a cnn affiliate, our Sister Station on the ground there, that this is sort of the area where he may have been found. John miller had reported from his sources that he was found in tall grass. If you look just behind that theres a lot of tall grass and wooded area behind there, found lying on top of this rifle. I dont know as were being shown this picture if this is just a location point. It looks to be logs and debris with tarps or if there is a suggestion that he was hiding under the tarp and logs which would be reasonable if you are trying to conceal yourself. Anything that jumps out to you in this picture . Just what jumps out to you. Its something that offers concealment and the tarps add to that. Its a possibility and we should know soon. We should know in five minutes. It turns out we are getting a fiveminute warning. You are seeing some of the officers show up in the background and you will be seeing im sure the Lieutenant Colonel will be there to talk about this. There were two groups of Law Enforcement that were directly involved in this, correct, john miller . Right. We are told and, again, this is very preliminary that it was this was an amalgam of s. W. A. T. Teams from all kinds of agencies that were sent out together and in pairs and, you know, this, i am told was Border Patrols elite tactical unit, bortac and Pennsylvania State police s. W. A. T. Team operating together in an area when they were alerted to this. Dont know if they were alerted to it by k9 who had the skeent from that Green Sweatshirt that he got rid of or whether it was a visual from an officer, but they came upon him, gave him verbal commands, he complied and they found the rifle underneath him. Curious as to whether he was sleeping when they found him or literally in the most literal sense just lying low, hoping they would pass by. Still unknown. We do not know if he was sleeping or lying there. We dont know how much he knew, either, and we are unlikely to learn that. I mean, thats an interesting question because we live in a world where Everybody Knows everything because we all walk around with one of these phones. We dont have any indication that he ever obtained a phone and the burglaries, what did we learn today . Granola bars, sweatshirt, boots. But we dont know that he ever was able to obtain something that would have given him a view of the world. Its interesting because we do know that his sister, i think, had some sort of communication because police have been talking to her and concerned about anyone that would try to help him, but ultimately it looks like he may have tried to seek help from people he knew and it just didnt work out. He ended up back in those woods and now he has been captured. He went to old friends, friends he hadnt seen in years and basically reintroduced himself via ring doorbell, seeking assistance, but they had been interviewed by police ahead of time and told if he contacts you, you have to contact us. His sisters dilemma, which is she is in overstay so he is not in the country legally and she was taken into custody and is in the early phases of some kind of Deportation Proceeding was based on they interviewed her, they asked her questions, they described her as uncooperative and i dont know if that means that she refused to answer questions or that they asked her specific things that they as weve heard, rob clark, the u. S. Marshalls supervisor in this case, the statement she made, she said, came close to the border of being criminal in terms of either being untruthful or withholding. Youre looking at live pictures right now from Chester County, pennsylvania. This is where they will hold a News Conference very shortly. Youre seeing photos now being set up beside the lectern where we will learn details for the first time, more details of how Danelo Cavalcante was taken into custody shortly after 8 00 a. M. We know that two teams of Law Enforcement, one federal, one state came upon him lying down in the grass on top of his weapon, but obviously much more that we will still learn in the next few minutes. Danny freeman who has been on the ground for Chester County for days and days and days now, you are still with us. Were a minute or so away from the Press Conference. What are the questions you have . Well, i think the major question that i have is certainly what led them to this pile of logs, to this particular area . Because, again, theres been a show of force in terms of Law Enforcement for many, many days. It seems this area was actually on the very edge of this Search Perimeter and frankly, not close to where he even stole that gun on monday night. So im curious what led them to this particular spot, and one other thing, john, again, were waiting for this presser any moment, but ill note. I had been talking to you on camera for a little while now, and i didnt even realize, if you look behind me, the Police Presence is gone. All those troopers, all of the intense perimeter setups, checking the trunks and checking the trunks, theyre gone. We saw many troopers come from the site where this capture happened. They went home. Its just another signal that things are getting back to normal here already in Chester County after 14 days of fear, of uncertainty, and concern because this Convicted Murderer was on the loose. Now hes back in Police Custody, and as i reported earlier, we understand he will stay in Pennsylvania StatePolice Custody for a little bit and then hell get medically assessed and then hell go to a State Facility where he will remain for a Life Sentence that hes already been convicted of. John . Sara . The pictures that youre seeing, lefthand side, that is cavalcante surrounded by the 500 members of Law Enforcement that were involved in the search and these folks involved in the capture that happened around 8 00 a. M. In pennsylvania. On the righthand side you are looking at Chester County pennsylvania, as well, but at a Press Conference that will be had by the authorities and there are a couple of pictures from our vantage point, theyre a little bit hard to see. I think i see a vehicle with him standing it looks like next to it, but we will get details on why those pictures are there, what happened exactly. We have heard from our john miller, from his sources that he was found, cavalcante, the convicted killer, was found if he was sleeping or if he was just literally trying to stay out of sight of Law Enforcement. That is how they found him. Two different teams and one pennsylvania s. W. A. T. Team, another bortac which is a customs and Border Patrols elite unit. We are waiting for that Press Conference to begin, but we still have Andrew Mccabe who is with us. Thank you, sir, for staying around. Can i ask you about what we are hearing about from john millers sources about how he was captured. What does it tell you about him and about how perhaps they found him because if he was found near this pile of wood which is near a home, clearly, there are cars there, what sort of clues does that give you as to how he was captured . Its an interesting development. It kind of breaks our assumptions that he was alone in the very deep woods, just kind of hiding in nature and in some ways makes sense. The pile of logs is an e morphous thing especially with the tarps thrown over it. You can pretty easily kind of burrow in there. Im not saying that he did this, we dont know this yet, but it certainly would be possible to cover yourself with those tarps and blend into the scenery. So it shows to me a degree of almost tactical sophistication. Hes obviously very good at finding places to hide, kind of hiding in plain sight. Keeps him close to a road, so if and if, we dont know this, its speculation, but if he had some desires on using that rifle to carjack someone or take a vehicle from a person you are right there on the road where you could potentially do that, of course, under cover the night. So theres a lot of potential there. I should also say it doesnt surprise me that if he had laid down to rest for the Daylight Hours when he was found that he would do so on top of or very close to the rifle. He wants to keep that. He wants to keep it hidden, but the rifle also serves another purpose for him. In addition to a scope which would be mounted at the very top of the rifle we also heard that a flashlight mounted to it which would be kind of just off to the side of the scope. Thats probably his only source of illumination during the night when hes trying to make most of his moves through the woods over the town. He cant afford to lose that thing and what he relies on in the dark. I see shapiro and pennsylvania authorities and the capture of Danelo Cavalcante. Good morning. I am pleased to be able to report that thanks to the extraordinary work of Law Enforcement officials from here in the commonwealth of pennsylvania, our local leaders here in Chester County and from our federal partners all across this nation, shortly after 8 00 a. M. Our suspect was captured. I want to say first and foremost, thank god there were no injuries to Law Enforcement or to the public. We obvious became deeply concerned after the suspect was able to steal a weapon. He was apprehended this morning with no shots fired. I want to say thank you to the dedicated Law Enforcement professionals from every level who each and every day go out of their homes, leave their families, leave their loved ones to keep us safe. The public, over the last 13 days, has had a chance to see what excellence in Law Enforcement means, what true, dedicated professionalism is all about. I couldnt be more proud to be standing up here today with these professionals from every level, and while they did extraordinary work, we had a tremendous assist from the public here in Chester County. I hope the good people of pennsylvania and indeed, the folks all across this nation got a chance to see how government is supposed to work, how Law Enforcement is supposed to work, where we all come together, where we focus on the mission, and while women and men up here behind me may wear different uniforms and different badges, we were here with common purpose and that was to apprehend the suspect and keep people safe. Leading this effort has been the Pennsylvania State police, and i know im going to get booed by some of the folks behind me for saying this, i believe they are the finest Law Enforcement agency in the United States of america, and i could not be more proud to be the governor of this commonwealth, and have the chance to serve in Public Service alongside these great leaders in the Pennsylvania State police. Leading the effort for us is colonel Christopher Perris who did yeomans work overseeing this operation together with Lieutenant Colonel bivits. All pennsylvanians, gentlemen, are indebted to you for your courage and tremendous leadership and with that it is my honor to bring up the colonel of the Pennsylvania State police, colonel Christopher Perris. Thank you, governor. I would like to make a few brief comments. I would like to dedicate those comments to the victims of cavalcante and their families. At the end of the day all the people behind me here work for justice and for the victims. A close second to the people of Chester County. We appreciate your support and we appreciate the dedication that you have shown us and the generosity that you have shown us. We are in your debt. This was a major operation. We know that it has affected your lives, and we are very much appreciative of that support. Id like to thank the governor and his support of
