Collecting information. They have nothing. Something out of a hollywood movie. They used heat seeking technology to find him. K9 yoda was able to get Into The Woods here. I can assure you he will not escape while he is in our custody. Good morning, were so glad that you are with us. A lot going on. And the government is still open for 16 more days. Plenty of time. They have had nothing in terms of actually moving forward on a potential deal. This fact the house failed on its bill yesterday. So everything is going great. And also the house is following impeachment which seems to be are no of a priority at this point. The House Republican conference set to meet behind doors to plot their Impeachment Inquiry of President Biden. Kevin mccarthy is forging ahead even though time is running out to prevent a Government Shutdown. Some skeptical republicans are pointing out there is a lack of evidence directly against biden and the president set to give a speech about the economy today. Reporters tried to ask him about impeachment yesterday. This is what he said. So a lot of questions, no response. But last night at a fundraiser President Biden did say this to supporters, it was off came him are a, but he said i get up every day not focused on impeachment, i have a job do. He said dont know quite why, but republicans knew they wanted to impeach me, best i can tell, because they want to shut down the government. Republican senator mitt romney is blasting what he calls, quote, the trump wing of the Republican Party after he announced yesterday that he will not seek reelection. Only republican senator you will remember to vote to convict donald trump in both of his impeachment trials. He says there does that appear to be a case against biden on impeachment. Listen. No question the Republican Party today is in the shadow of donald trump. He is the leader of the greatest portion of the Republican Party. I represent a small wing of the party. If you will, i call it the wise wing of the Republican Party. My wing of the party talks about policy. And about issues that will make a difference to the lives of the American People. The trump wing talks about resentments and getting even and settling scores. So mitt romney has never been secretive about his feelings about former President Trump. But if you take the Impeachment Inquiry and romney deciding to leave after this term in office and the Government Shutdown looming, you get a sense of the real dynamic that is now playing out in an acute manner and will drive not just politics in washington but the entire country. So here is 1202024. Donald trump, Kevin Mccarthy, they coordinate often and the two discussed impeachment along with others in the republican conference of President Biden. Also running for reelection so far doesnt seem to have any real democratic challenges and despite some calls, not clearly stepping aside anytime soon. And here is how people feel about it. Even though biden won by about 7 million votes or more in 2020, right now in the latest cnn poll within the margin of error, very, very tight. How do people feel about the candidates . Approval appa threat ittic would be a good way. 35 for trump, 36 for biden. So where is kthis Kevin Mccarth the house . They are driving toward a chaos driven by former President Trump and something that many republicans inside the conference dont actually want to go toward all as Government Shutdown looms. As for booiiden, not really addressing it. Yesterday having a Cabinet Meeting on Cancer Research and cancer funding. Two very different approaches. As for trump, he put on his social media yesterday if he owned a mcdonalds or even a much smaller less complex operation, would you hire Crooked Joe Biden to run it. It is a clear contrast and it will be demonstrated again today. The president will be delivering an economic address laying out the next chapter bidenomics verse maganomics. What is at stage for the American People and debates about the federal budget. And House Freedom caucus is driving mccarthy who has launched the Impeachment Inquiry largely because members of the Freedom Caucus want to impeach the president not to sign on to a Stop Gap Agreement even though republicans and democrats know that is the only way out of a shutdown that looms just 16 days away. Where is the white house on that issue . Omb director noted that Speaker Mccarthy and President Biden struck a bipartisan Budget Agreement that was supposed to result in deficit reduction. So what are House Republicans doing . They had a major appropriations bill. Instead if you were on the House Television system, you saw this, kind of the give lechqequivalen screen of death. They ended up having to pull the bill. To some degree chaos versus keeping heads down and moving. That is the distinction that is the split screen and it is a split screen to some degree that romney also demonstrated yesterday. Trump immediately attacked him saying fantastic news for america and also congratulated america because romney was retiring. As for biden, didnt say anything publicly. Quietly he called romney im told Behind The Scenes and said thank you for your service, talked about his decision. Never talked about it publicly. That is the contrast and yet this is what romney said yesterday. Take a listen. I think it would be a great thing if both President Biden and former President Trump were to stand aside and let their respective party pick someone in the next generation. President biden when he was running said he was a transitional figure to the next generation. Time to transition. And to some degree when you listen to roll any, he spoke to biden privately and made clear that he would prefer biden if forced in that situation. Any, h biden privately and made clear that he would prefer biden if forced in that situation. Yet he still wants him to leave. Romney saying id just like anybody else. And how interesting that they talked. This morning Biden Campaign aides are terrified of the very real prospect that he could lose in a highly likely trump biden rematch. A new cnn report says the fear is palpable throughout the Democratic Party and the concerns go beyond complaints about bidens age and mental capacity. It is that many voters are expressing indifference toward him in general. And now they are worried one mistake could enable a candidate they see as a singular threat to american democracy. We know this because of fascinating reporting from our colleague who is joining us now. Isaac, this is interesting. I was looking back at your reporting and terrified is the word they are using . They are really scared of what it would be if donald trump would return to the white house. They are looking at the polls that everybody is looking at seeing that this is a likely rematch that is coming. And it is going to be a close election. So that means anything could go wrong here. When i spoke with people, they were pointing to things like Cu Democratic district in which people are saying things like when asked about joe biden i feel indifferent honestly. The only thing that i know is that i dont like the other guy. And so that is really driving a lot of the thinking. Can they get the enthusiasm up for joe biden . Maybe. But when they compare him to donald trump and to what they see as a full maga takeover of the Republican Party . That is the question that the biden folks are looking at here. And one of the things ive been fascinated by for several months is kind of the idea that Behind The Scenes they are building between their Data Operation and kind of their voter identification, almost t that chase program, how to figure out what voters want to see to be reached if im putting that in and it is hard because it changed dramatically. You talked to Rob Flaherty A top digital people. Do they think that they have figured it out . They think that they are in the process of trying to figure it out. Look, this is a really weird situation. Think about how much media and technology has changed since 2016 which is the last time we had a president ial election that wasnt defined by covid and zoom and car rallies and all that stuff. This is a really different environment and the Biden Campaign what they are saying is dont expect to see joe biden out on the Campaign Trail that much in between now and next spring. But what you should think is going on is that they are digging in a lot, doing a lot of testing going through the kind of data mining that was not possible before. And with access to Voter Information on a kale that democrats have never actually had. Really fascinating insight into what is going on. Joining us now to discuss, host of very serious podcast. And also we have the former 2020 candidate and new author andrew yang is back with us. I feel like part of my theory of the case of what i was trying to lay out of the last ten days is something that youve been talking about in terms of how biden operates, why he operates and why it is effective and also difficult to resonate with the public. Yeah, i think that biden has been a successful operator with congress in ways that are often not very public. When we had the fight over the debt limit earlier in year, i and i think many other people were surprised by how cleanly that was resolved. Biden had good success Work Together with House Republicans negotiating a deal that averted what a lot of people expected would be a serious crisis with nonpayment on u. S. Bonds. And so we have two more weeks left and well see exactly what happens with Kevin Mccarthy. In the conference earlier this week, Kevin Mccarthy basically said to his members you dont want to pass our own Appropriations Bills and we dont want to pass omnibus and continuing resolution. So what are we doing here. He is basically laying out that the only option left is a shutdown. So it is a question of do they want to agree to an omnibus that the is that the will ultimately write up before Shutdown Offer after shutdown before mccarthy has gotten them to not walk down the blind alley specifically on federal spending. So well see if that will happen here. But Biden Making A Bufrng of sp bunch of speeches i dont think will move that forward. And Anderson Cooper did and i will lilluminating interview wih nancy pelosi and he asked her multiple times about Vice President harris. I want people to listen to that. Vice president Kamala Harris best running mate for this president . He thinks so. And that is what matters. But do you think she is the best running mate . She is the Vice President of the United States. People say why isnt she doing this or that. And i said because shes the Vice President. That is the job description. David ignatius cited her as a real sort of albatross, not his words, but around the neck of the president and making it harder for biden this time around. And nancy pelosi doesnt give a definitive answer. She complimented her a lot, but didnt say yes when given two opportunities. The of that has consistently lagged the president with approval rating. The job is basically do no harm you can dont steal too much of the spotlight but outperform the person behind you. And this Issers Vo The of course joe biden would be the oldest president in history. So it puts more pressure on vice presidency. So people already saying what are her outstanding accomplishments that shes done. Shes consistently had lower approval rating. Some she the best person to take over. And im really interested in why shes getting so much criticism and is it warranted. I think that the white house hasnt necessarily set her up well. The border, if they werent planning to address it in a major way, dont make her the border czar. Nothing has effectively changed with the border crisis. Numbers got better after title 42. But also shes not really given a bunch of major policy speeches. With women i think that that is something that she could be utilized in. But she went to tennessee, for example. I think that she i dont think that shes been set up for success but i also think some of this is just frankly sbhg shes failed to succeed in. Im not intentionally going after josh, but i want to be candid the idea of replacing Kamala Harris on the ticket is like a fever dream of Like Washington salons and people who are connected to any type of reality, which is not what you were saying. But im saying the reality of it, the idea of that, the kind of anxiety within the Democratic Party about everything, which is not necessarily abnormal, but what is your read on why there is discontent . It is because 73 of americans are nervous about joe bidens advancing age and there is a low level of confidence in Kamala Harris as his successor. But why . In large part because they are not actually listening to voters. If you had a democratic primary, then if joe prevails, all is well and even says hey, were going with joe again. But the fact that they have completely shut down that process and told people considering running for president dont run against joe to keep your place in the party, it is raising the Anxiety Level in my opinion for good reason. I agree with mitt romney. He said it is time for us to step aside for the next generation. Tens of millions feel the same way about joe biden and trump. And i understand they can kind of locked in this death match, but having a president who literally named himself a transitional Figure Running at the age of 81, 82, is not what most americans want. Im genuinely not intending to i understood the column. But it is what you are writing versus the reality. Which you acknowledge. But it is biden should pick a new running mate in 2024. Explain the rationale and what you kind of go through here. One of the key reasons is that Kamala Harris is so weak. Democrats imagine what would happen if biden stepped aside, Kamala Harris would be the frontrunner. Her polling is consistently worse than bidens. A four point shift is the difference between winning and losing. And so for all joe bidens weaknesses, they are clearly better off with him at the top of the ticket than her. And reflects it was a mistake to ever put her on the president ial ticket in the first place. She came up as an elected official in florida, almost managed to lose statewide election in florida to a republican which is not very impressive. In 2010 elected by one point as state attorney general. But the way she got california. Yes. And the way that she got nominated, she is good at playing the inside game where she is popular with staffers and big donors. She probably the kind of democrat who appeals to is extremely partisan democrat. But that is not the way to win a president ial election. So biden because he will be so old and he will probably serve out a second term if reelected but a decent chance that he wouldnt, the Democratic Party needs someone who is ready to pick up and lead the party and that is not Kamala Harris given her polling. If you have someone like Gretchen Whitmer who won two elections in michigan by nine and 11 points who has taken over the state legislature, that is the figure that you want to be leading the Democratic Party forward. And i think that they should have a Vice President ial primary. Let everyone say look, i will be the successor and i legitimately, you know, anointed by the people. Something that will never happen, but i agree. David ignatius highlighted so well that one of the most effective cases the Biden Administration made is donald trump and extremist republicans are a threat to democracy. But you cant say the republic is hang management the balance but well run Somebody Polling neck and neck with joe biden or a Vice President who is sorry, neck and neck with donald trump or a Vice President who is polling even lower against donald trump. That is where there is a discontent and i think there needs to be a Reality Check if you are going to argue this is about saving the country, you have to put up somebody who can actually win. And yet here we are. And i think that is part of the theory of the case, that those people will come home. Like the argument will land again when people start to a good mamble. They understand the stakes and reality. All right, a great conversation. Thank you. Biggest names in Tech Converging Yesterday on capitol hill meeting with senators about artificial intelligence. I asked everyone in the room is government needed to play a role in Regulating Ai and every Single Person raised their hands even though they had diverse views. Senate lawmakers met in a closed forum with tech leaders yesterday to discuss concerns and opportunity. Major players were there. And also leaders of several civil rights and labor groups also head of the teachers union, they were there as lawmakers consider how to craft guardrails for ai. One of the participants, president and ceo of the Leadership Conference on civil and human rights maya wiley told the group to make sure that it is a fully democratic process and that any action protects consumers and people at the front end not just try to fix it after. And maya wiley is joining us. Glad you were there. What did you hear in the room . Because this is how tech leaders described it, here is elon musk. I think something good will come of this. It may go down in history as being important for the future of civilization. Google ceo it was very productive. Sam altman says everyone shares the same incentives. What was it like in the room . First of all, i do want to applaud the gang of four as weve been lovingly calling these bipartisan senators getting together under Majority Leader assuschumers leadership. It was important to have this kind of conversation. I want to say that up front. And i think that there is a lot of sentiment and agreement. The Senate Majority leader is completely right. Everyone raised their hand when he asked about regulation. I think the question is and this was very interesting in the room and i have to say one of the issues where we saw a real Power Differential between those of us focused on people and companies focused on competition. Which is what does it mean to say regulation and what are we regulating for. So for example elon musk, certainly was the one who went out there and said look, basically dont worry about selfdriving cars, that is not the issue, the safety issue. Worry about the end of civilization. Well, you know, okay, none of us want to live in terminator world. This is the person who has 42,000 satellites up in space. I mean, but the question became but and we had one academic in the room. She called that out and set there are serious concerns about what ai does when it comes to hurting people and that does include selfdriving cars and we need to regulate so there is safety there. I think that is an important kind of conversation. But we need more of that kind of conversation with the public. With the public. It is really interesting that you say that and interesting that you talk about this Power Differential in the room between billionaire Business Leaders and folks like you raising their hands on this stuff. And also bipartisan Senator Criticism of this, right . Senator blumenthal talking about we already have a Framework Legislation Out regulate ai. Josh hawley calling it a giant cocktail party. Are they right and should this have been in front of the American People . First of all, i think will conversation is and is going to continue to be in front of the American People and it is thanks to senators like Senator Blumenthal and senator hawley. I dont think that we ever thought that wed put those two names together and that is an incredibly important thing to recognize, that there really is a bipartisan opportunity here. And particularly when were starting from a place where whether you are the Civil Rights Community or the tech sector, there is agreement that there has to be regulation. I mean, the question is what. And i think that there will be legislation, there will be a way to enable this. We have at the Leadership Conference created the center on civil rights and technology in order to have more of these conversations and enable and create more public dialogue and public education. That is a must. Can i ask you this . There was a big problem with facial Recognition Technology a few years ago because it is mainly created by white men. Having Diverse Voices in the room and regulating this technology, can you speak to why that is so important for the future . Yeah, look, this is so critical and this is part of what we were saying in the room but where there is a real power difrn shal in terms of understanding what it really means for real people. Not as much on facial recognition. I think there is so Much Research out there. Tech firms would agree with that. But when were talking about artificial intelligence, were talking about these models built on data. Data escaped from unequal discriminatory society. Whether you are women, people with disabilities, people of color. Facial recognition is one of the really obvious high risks. But also where you get the data from. Were seeing that for example people of color when we get facial recognition is coming through Law Enforcement. Oftentimes when we have people stopped and then biometrics taken, if they are arrested, even if they are never ever charged with a crime, but that means that you show up in the data in a particular kind of way. And one of the elephants in the room and the discussion yesterday was that the European Union has been taking the lead on protecting consumers, protecting privacy, mandating transparency, trying to protect startups that will provide more competition for Big Tech Companies but saying it all has to be done preventing risk particularly to marginalized communities like facial recognition and many of the people in that room who were saying we agree with regulation were also kind of saying but dont do eu, European Union. When we have the opportunity as the west globally to come together and say that well set the standard for the world that says were going to put people first and ensure that technology serves people, not profit. And with gdpr, just one example of where europe led, companies have shown that it takes a lot of work, it is expensive, but they can comply if governments mandate it. Maya wiley, thank you very much. Illuminating to hear about what it was like in the room. Thank you. Were get new details about the dramatic capture of a convicted murderer who was on the run in pennsylvania for two weeks. Failing to do so would put thousands of federal employees out of work and significant pressure on the u. S. Economy. Our next guests are pushing bipartisan legislation. A legislative solution that they have put forward. Joining us is senator langford and also senator king. Senators, appreciate your time. I want to dig in on the bill in a second, but just to start with the ideas that right now you guys this is not a new thing. Neither the Countdown Clock nor the legislation. Youve proposed this several times. Do you feel like this moment is different because it seems like some of your koel leagues in the house arent just considering a shutdown but some seem to actual definitively want it . Yeah, i dont know that anyone really wants a shutdown. We do want a solution to some of the issues going on especially debt and deficit. Were always looking for what is the moment that we could actually address this accelerating debt and deficit. But this is an issue on ending Government Shutdowns weve talked about for a long time. We need to have the debate on debt and deficit, but we dont need to have a Government Shutdown. We have Government Workers that are not getting a check, we have chaos as people cant call federal agencies. It spending more taxpayer money than it saves by a far amount. So it is wasteful on the taxpayer, difficult on the federal workers and difficult on the American People. Lets have the debate on debt and deficit, but hold the American People harmless in the process. Senator king, i feel like we talk about this every time were within two to three weeks of the Government Shutdown. Everybody says that is a great idea. And then it never kind of moves forward. Why do you think this legislation, this proposal, hasnt gained traction after the eventual solving of the Shutdown Problem . Well, i think the problem is we through a shutdown and everybody relaxes and says that is done and well move on. The reality is this is becoming a regular occurrence. And it is james said, it is very damaging to the economy. Thousands of jobs arent there to answer the phone. Mortgages went down 13 during the last shutdown because there wasnt anybody there to process the federal piece of the mortgage process. So it has a really serious impact. We believe that this may be a moment when people will start taking a solution seriously and what were basically proposing is that there is no travel money. There will be an automatic renewal of of a continuing resolution every two weeks but nobody leaves until we get the solution. Our version of lock them in a room until a decision is made. And pain usually brings results. In terms of the current state of affairs, Speaker Mccarthy yesterday told the conference that they would strip out the ukraine piece of the supplemental funding that they are trying to attach. Do you agree with that approach in the current negotiations . Yeah, i didnt see the particular piece from Speaker Mccarthy, but we need to stand with the people of ukraine. They are in a fight for their lives. Russian army is slaughtering their neighbors. So we should stand with the people being attacked. We shouldnt have american troop on the ground, but just to ignore what is happening there and assuming war in europe wont affect the United States is to ignore history. So trying to get faster into the war is much better for the American People and for the global stability. And senator, are you concerned that the move toward Impeachment Inquiry creates another 4urhurdle . Yeah, the noise just got noisier. And the conversation about Impeachment Inquiry is weeks and weeks and weeks in the process. They still have a long way to go to actually get to that vote and any eventual vote if they choose to do impeachment is in the house and that is a process that they will do, but it shouldnt affect the next two or three weeks. Senator king, your name came up yesterday, a lot of attention on one of your colleagues, mitt romney, about a text that you sent him warning him of potential problems on january 6. He wrote about that. He passed that along to leader mcconnell. I was wondering if you could give context of how you sent that text and why. I was hearing from some friends in the pentagon that there was chat over the internet, this wasnt classified, it was basically Internet Traffic talking about the poegssibility of some kind violence here on january 6 and mitt romneys name came up. As you recall, he was the only republican to vote for the conviction of President Trump in the first impeachment trial. And when i heard his name, i thought i should let him knee. It is a pretty poor friend who doesnt warn somebody who is a friend that they might be in danger. It was all rumors and chatter on the internet, but even if there was we all considered it a remote possibility at the time, but i thought you should let mitt he know. And republican senator known for working across the aisle. What is it like to see somebody like senator romney decide to depart . And i think some critical framing about where the party is at this point. Yeah, obviously everybody makes their own decisions in their own direction. He served as governor, he was a president ial candidate, he served in the senate and leading the olympics in the past. Hes been known to be able to work across the aisle. He has frustrated republicans and democrats alike at different points. So we have several members, kyrsten sinema, joe manchin, angus king has frustrate both sides of the aisle at times. We have a responsibility to be able to represent the people that we represent, not a certain party. And id like to chime in. Mitt romney will really be missed because he was so smart and so principled and thoughtful, he was a guy that you could go to and say here is a serious issue, lets talk seriously about it without regard to the political ramifications. He will be a real loss to this body. And before i let you guys go, would either of you be considering not running the next time you are up for reelection . Wouldnt want to specify, but if anybody is up in near term race and hasnt made a decision yet, do we know . Well, i am running again in 2024. Im working at it actively. I have a Campaign Manager and working at it. And interacting ill be back in maine tonight and over the weekend. So im hard at it because i think that it is funny, i havent sat down with mitt romney, he and i looked at the same issue and made opposite decisions. I just decided this wasnt a time to leave. Wasnt a time to walk away based upon what the circumstances are here. So ive decided as toto stick w it. Thankfully im five years away from that decision. I appreciate it. Legislation again not something that is new, you guys have pushed it several times and yet were back here every time. Maybe this time will be different. You are certainly giving it a shot. Appreciate your time. Thanks. Nice to see people working together. All right, does gen z struggle more with Mental Health than millennials . A new survey shows signs of a pretty alarming shift. As more members of genz emerge into or approach adulthood a survey looks at the challenges this Younger Generation faces with less than half feeling like they are thriving in life. Joining us athena jones. What does it tell us . The pollsters found that genz, they struggle more with Mental Health and emotional well being than previous generations at the same age and they weight their Mental Health lower. You can see 20 of genz say their Mental Health is excellent. Thats nine points lower than other ages. And more than a third say their Mental Health is fair or poor. All is not lost. Those numbers excellent plus good is six in ten. You can see the difference across generations. Part of the reason is that genzers say they experience more sadness, loneliness, negative emotions like that. Anxiety and stress, 51 felt anxious a lot the previous day. 62 felt stressed the prior day. So we are seeing we heard a lot of talk in recent years about Mental Health struggles especially when it comes to the Younger Generation. This poll bears that out. What are they most worried about, genz, when it comes to the future. Making enough money to live comfortably. That was the most cited worry. They feel like they will have a good future, but only 44 feel prepared, and thats because they feel their school, while offering them a view of different career paths, dont give them enough practical opportunities to prepare themselves for the work force. Just a third say their school offers opportunities to work on projects relevant to the job they want, less than 30 say their school helps interview for a job. Whp it comes to barriers, 64 believe Financial Resources will be a barrier to achieve their goals and dreams, and that is really broken down when it comes to college. Those who want to go to higher education, 53 say they will be able to afford it. When you break it down by race, white genzers, black genzers least likely. So interesting as we create policies that affect them. Thank you. All right. At Midnight Thousands of members could walk off the job. Man who spent decades cleaning up the Anacostia River in the nations capital. We would go into the river and swim and cool off. When my children were old enough to start going down to the stream to play, i noticed that it was trash and toxic sediment. The Floatable Flash and debris, it made for a toxic soup. I wound up Organizing Cleanups in my own neighborhood which eventually led me to found a Nonprofit Organization that led to the installation of a litter capturing device, the first in the western hemisphere. That allowed us to create a Workforce Development program, and we engaged youth from all around the city who would take responsibility for cleaning up the litter traps. We have also closed down a major polluter. We just have to collect the data. The Anacostia River has improved tremendously over the last decade. One real indicator is eagles are nesting again.
