Of the country that doesnt have room for most of us. I get it, hes a good guy. Hes a great mayor. But guess what, he was a mayor. Im running against some guys Pete Buttigieg among others who have raised Campaign Funds from over 40 billionaires. 40 billionaires. Bernie and i are friends. I appreciate his service. I dont think he should lead the ticket. We have reporters following the candidates across the state. Lets get to it. Lets start with ryan nobles tracking Bernie Sanders in manchester. Give me the sense, we know Bernie Sanders won the state in 2016 by 20 plus points. What is the campaign saying today . Well, there is no doubt they feel pretty confident about Bernie Sanders chances here tomorrow night. He just wrapped up a Breakfast Event here in manchester and what i found interesting about what sanders had to say to this crowd today, he was still alluding to the fact that there are candidates in this race who have wealthy donors behind them. But he did not mention Pete Buttigieg or joe biden specifically by name. So he clearly wants to continue to have that line of attack in the water. But he seems to be focusing more on emphasizing his strengths in this race as opposed to knocking down his competitors. Still, he wants to make it clear how his campaign is funded versus how some of these other campaigns are funded. Take a listen to what he said here an hour ago. Even in the newspapers today, you can see candidates conferring with their donors. You are my donors. We dont go to rich peoples homes and get advice from millionaires and billionaires who are raising all kinds of money. Reporter one other thing i found today in the speech this morning, kate, is the consistency of sanders. Oftentimes at this closing stage of a primary or caucus campaign, you hear candidates making their Closing Arguments to voters in these various states. Sanders Closing Argument is the same argument hes been making for 40 years, there is no Closing Argument, there is one argument for Bernie Sanders, this is who i am, please come vote for me tomorrow night. We saw momentum in iowa. Well soon see what that means in New Hampshire. Lets get to abby phillip following Pete Buttigieg in plymouth, New Hampshire. I hear applause behind you. This back and forth between joe biden and Pete Buttigieg is noteworthy since iowa. What are you hearing from them this morning . Reporter yeah, well, it is a clear change of tone for joe biden. I think the Buttigieg Campaign is perfectly fine with this conversation. It is really been a tool for them to go back to a core message hes had all along, hes been actually making the case that a mayor is just the type of leader that is needed to lead the country. And so i think what we have seen over the last several days is that Buttigieg Campaign really pushing back on this idea from the Biden Campaign that theyre looking down on small towns and on cities across the country. And also led to questions for biden about whether or not this is the same kind of argument that was made against barack obama back in 2008. Here is a little bit of the back and forth between biden and buttigieg over the weekend on this topic. Is this an act of desperation on your campaign to be come on, man. To make this assertion of mayor buttigieg. This guy is not a barack obama. Hes right. Im not. Neither is he. Neither is any of us running for president. This isnt 2008. It is 2020. And we are in a new moment, calling for a different kind of leadership. What i think is clear here is that the Buttigieg Campaign has actually been looking ahead. They finished in a relative tie with Bernie Sanders in iowa, in a lot of the polls sanders is leading buttigieg by a few points. We have seen him on the trail talking about senator sanders and whether or not he can pay for the plan that he proposed. He talks a lot about whether there is a choice between revolution or the status quo or whether there is a middle ground and i think buttigieg has been arguing that he can be that middle ground. I think were seeing in this campaign not so much of a focus on joe biden, but a focus on the candidate who appears to be ahead of him here in the state of New Hampshire, which is Bernie Sanders. I think the buttigieg argument to voters here is essentially that you have another choice, you do not have to go all the way to either extreme. Good to see you, abby, thank you very much. Jessica dean is covering joe biden today, in the town of gilford, New Hampshire. Jessica, bidens facing tough questions, you heard that with what jeff zeleny was asking, about his standing in the race. What is he saying . Reporter yeah, thats been the line of questioning throughout the weekend. If you talk to his advisers, and even from him, they are ready to get to nevada. Ready to get to South Carolina, central argument to all of this has been you got to take these first four states as a whole and then evaluate after South Carolina and then into super tuesday. Theyre counting on that firewall of sorts in South Carolina where he has held on to very strong support from africanamerican voters, theyre hopeful also in nevada that latino voters, Union Support will boost them through. But the fact is we are here in New Hampshire, and he had a disappointing showing in iowa, it remains to be seek what happens here in New Hampshire. Campaign all said they can afford to lose iowa and ham happen and then go to the following states, that they really didnt count on was to be in such a weak standing in iowa and come here to New Hampshire and see a surging Pete Buttigieg and see a surging Amy Klobuchar. Thats whats happening here. Earlier today, there is talk about money, fund raising on the Biden Campaign and he answered some questions in an interview earlier today. Listen. How concerned are you about the rise of bloomberg . Im not concerned. By the way, the only baggage he has is all that money. Hes already spent 300 million on advertising. But there are questions about how much you have money is a strength too. Money is a strength too. I have enough money. We have been raising about half a Million Dollars a day. So your campaign is not running low on cash as some people are reporting . No, it is not. So there you go, right out of the Vice President s mouth there, and his campaign maintaining that they have the money, they need to run this race to get to South Carolina. But thats going to be the key and now a lot of pressure on joe biden to really perform incredibly strongly once we get out of New Hampshire, get into nevada and certainly in South Carolina. Absolutely, great to see. A beautiful scene behind you today. Joining me now, jesse mcintosh, director of outreach communication for Hillary Clinton and jeff zeleny. So, jesse, back in 2016, you remember when Bernie Sander won the New Hampshire primary handily. At this point in 2020 is this would you be saying are you in the are you the thought this is sanders race to lose this time. Yeah, absolutely. Think the biggest race that Bernie Sanders is in right now is with turnout. I think sorry, was that directed at me or it was jesse. Both of you are amazing and can answer, but go, jessica. In a room our names rhyme. I think this is bernies to lose and the biggest problem now is turnout. Hes leading a movement, he will bring new people into the fold, that young people who never would have voted before will vote this time, for him, if hes the nominee. That didnt pan out in iowa. And i think that has a lot of democrats who were excited about the Bernie Sanders candidacy a little concerned. So for him i want to see who shows up tonight, not a caucus, it is a primary. You can vote in a democratic election, only have to show up the once and vote. Is he able to bring all those new people to the table, do we see higher turnout in New Hampshire than we did in 2016, does it come closer to 2008. Thats where i think the challenge for Bernie Sanders is today. On turnout, jeff zeleny, turnout was disappointing in iowa. What do you what are you hearing on the ground . Is there concern about that in New Hampshire . Clearly two very different systems, very different contests as we laid out ad nauseam. Is that a concern in New Hampshire . Well, first of all, sorry, jesse, for stepping on you, our names do sound alike. I think the turnout question, it will be a test for the sanders campaign. He was disappointed, the campaign was disappointed by the lower turnout in the iowa caucuses. Some you can blame on the caucuses. They knew they were going to be long town meetings across the state. Some werent that long. Some of them ended in an hour or so. One thing is different here in New Hampshire, of all the many things, the independent voters, more than 40 of the voters here are independent, not registered with either party. That, of course, helped Bernie Sanders considerably in 2016. We will see where those independent voters go tomorrow. Some certainly may go with Bernie Sanders, others, you know, more moderate ones may go to Pete Buttigieg or amy clone shore or joe biden. I think without a question the turnout twill be higher we do not know if senator sander will be able to get all the young people that he hopes to and also expand his coalition. That is one of the Biggest Challenges facing the sanders campaign. Can he get older voters, people who are more except of hskeptic plans. Can he persuade them to join his movement here. Those are the challenges facing his campaign. Hes leading the way here. If he wouldnt win that would be certainly an issue for him going forward. And, jeff zeleny, also, we played earlier the question, the pointed question you had for joe biden, about the direct attacks that are now going on between candidates like biden and buttigieg. But when you ask biden about this kind of back and forth, what do you make of his response . I did ask the former Vice President about that, because, look, hes the one who really aggressively was going after the experience of Pete Buttigieg. Just reminded me of exactly the argument that was happening here 12 years ago when Hillary Clinton was aggressively questioning Barack Obamas experience and joe biden doing that in the earlier stages of the 2008 campaign. And he is the one who said, look, hes not a barack obama. That wasnt suggesting the question that he was. I think that joe biden is desperately trying to make the argument that his experience matters. Hes desperately trying to convince voters this is a different moment, this is a different time because of the Trump Presidency that experience absolutely matters, and he is saying that the only experience that is the most important is actual white house experience. Joe biden is trying to make that argument. The question is will voters buy it or not. Well see if they will. Also interested if seeing joe biden will keep repeating that argument. He didnt necessarily seem comfortable with the words he was saying about belittling the experience of a mayor. Hisse ed sed ed advisers say of comfortable. Generally speak, what is your view on this . Do you think these attacks win over undecided voters . Or do you think it is more about trying to make sure that those voters who are your supporters now that they are motivated and they turn out . I think it is a little bit of both. It is also a little bit of working the refs. I think a lot of democrats were surprised to see Pete Buttigieg come out on top in iowa. Hes a relatively untested candidate. And he hasnt face the the same kind of media scrutiny that joe biden or Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders has. These are questions that will come up in the general. These are lines of contrast that republicans will draw a lot more harshly than joe biden is now. So i understand why hes doing it. Im not sure that attacking anybody on the same team wins over voters, which is why i think it is interesting that Elizabeth Warren, our third place candidate in iowa, is staying completely above the fray. She put in a very good debate performance, but largely stayed out of that back and forth. So her friday night clips didnt get played on saturday and sunday like some of the more pointed attacks did, but blew through her fundraising goal anyway. Raised over 2 million, set a new one at 4. Counting her out would be a mistake at this point. It is a very fluid race. The change in messaging proves to show how much more shifting there is to go. Thats an excellent point. When you look at New Hampshire, New Hampshire doesnt like to be told what to do. Lets see, lets let them decide tomorrow and then talk about it. Lines of contrast, thats such a diplomatic way of describing it, jesse. I like it very much. Great to see you. Thank you so much. Coming up, they plan to leave quietly. President trump had other ideas. New reporting on the president s decision to fire two key impeachment witnesses Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman and ambassador Gordon Sondland. And later, as the death toll rises worldwide, the number of coronavirus cases on a cruise ship quarantined off japan nearly doubled overnight. Well have the latest on how Health Officials are working to get ahead of this growing outbreak now. Obama hes been a leader throughout the country for the past twelve years, mr. Michael bloomberg is here. Vo leadership in action. Mayor bloomberg and president obama worked together in the fight for gun safety laws, to improve education, and to develop innovative ways to help teens gain the skills needed to find good jobs. Obama at a time when washington is divided in old ideological battles he shows us what can be achieved when we bring people together to seek pragmatic solutions. Bloomberg im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. Wean air force veteran made of doing whats right,. Not whats easy. So when a hailstorm hit, usaa reached out before he could even inspect the damage. Thats how you do it right. Usaa insurance is made just the way martins family needs it with hasslefree claims, he got paid before his neighbor even got started. Because doing right by our members, thats whats right. Usaa. What youre made of, were made for. Usaa calls for a new investigation this morning as the dust settle on the president s firing of two administration officials, called to testify during his impeachment. The top democrat in the senate, Chuck Schumer is requesting that requesting that a federal watchdog, all 74 of them, look into it. In a letter schumer wants to know about quote unquote any and all instances of retaliation against anyone making quote protected disclosures of president ial misconduct. This comes, of course, as Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman was escorted out of the white house friday by security. Fired over his testimony in the house hearings about the president s call with ukraine. That same day, the ambassador to the eu Gordon Sondland was also effectively fired and trump did not stop there. Even Alexander Vindmans twin brother who served in the white house and had nothing to do with the impeachment hearings, he was also fired friday and escorted out as well. Remember, vindman and sondland were subpoenaed to testify, they were forced it speak to congress and testify under oath. Today, cnn learns from multiple sources that vindman and sondland had already been planning to leave their positions. The president , in learning that, did not want them to go quietly. Here with me right now for important perspective is this move is not only chilling but frightening for every career government official. Why is that . Well, as a career government official, whether youre in the Civil Service, the Foreign Service or the military, you swear an oath and that oath is purely to the constitution of the United States. What were seeing the president do here is change that oath from one towards the constitution towards one of loyalty, of personal loyalty to the president and so thats a frightening message. We what we saw with Lieutenant Colonel vindman do is follow fully that oath to the constitution when he was lawfully subpoenaed by the United States congress, he showed up and he testified truthfully to the extent of his knowledge. And thats that. He didnt do anything beyond what was legally required of him and what was legally required of the code that he swore an oath to. And yet were seeing him be penalized because his the truth that he spoke went against the personal interests of the president. So thats a very concerning message. Want to play for you how President Trump talked about Lieutenant Colonel vindman on thursday, the day after he was acquitted by the senate. Listen to this. Lieutenant colonel vindman and his twin brother, right, we had some people that really amazing. At that very moment, Lieutenant Colonel vindman still worked in the white house for the president when the president was speaking about him deriisively like that. Youve been with folks who are still there. Who had it been like since vindman testified . What have they told you . What im hearing is that Lieutenant Colonel vindman and his brother had already been isolated within the nsc, they were not really receiving substantive work, they were not really being given a lot of the responsibilities that somebody in their role should have and were supposed to have. So, you know, essentially, seems like they had lost the trust of the president and at the point where you serve at the pleasure of the president , at the white house, if you lose the president s trust, it probably isnt the best interest for everybody for you to move on. However, having said that, the reports that were hearing today that say that the he was in fact planning on moving on, and that the president did not allow that to happen, but wanted to kind of vindictively remove him first, thats more troubling. The messaging here is one of, you know, if you go beyond the personal loyalty to the president , whether or not the constitution requires it or the law requires it or anything else, if you go beyond that personal loyalty, the president will come after you. Lindsey graham is defending the president and seems to be imp implying in doing so that vindman is part of the socalled deep state. Let me play for you what he said sunday. I think his reassignment was justified. I dont think he can be effective at the nsc. As much as i support the military people telling the truth when they ask, what have we learned in the last two years. Cia agents, department of state, department of justice lawyers, fbi agents have a political agenda, and they acted on it, we found that out through the fisa investigation. As to colonel vindman, he was not allowed to be asked questions about his connection to the alleged whistleblower, to people he denied no, he was not. They did not allow him to they did not allow the republicans to go down that road. What do you say to that . The senator, i think, was right at the top when he was talking about, you know, the interests of the country when hes talking about a member of the military or Foreign Service or Civil Service are required to and always tell the truth when pressed, when asked by a subpoena, by congress. Where i think he went off track is in this kind of following this red herring of linking this to some conspiracy theory. There is no conspiracy playing out here. Lieutenant colonel vindman to the extent ive seen was called in by congress, asked to testify, showed up the day he was asked to testify, gave a truthful testimony and left. He hasnt been out there promoting himself. Hasnt been tweeting anything. Hasnt been trying to work with others to somehow destroy the president or his reputation. He was simply following legal lawful orders and following that oath that we have all sworn to the constitution of the United States. You worked in this administration. You worked under this president. You worked with the nsc. When you were there, would you envision Something Like this happening and what is your advice to your colleagues still there now . After this . Well, ill tell you, the folks who work in the nsc are tireless, career professionals. Theyre hard working individuals, on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to keep our country historically the n apolitical body. I no he that my friends and leagues, former colleagues at the nsc will fight very hard to keep things that way. It is for the safety of our country, for the National Security interests of our government, and i know that they will not take this message from the president and act on it, they will continue to do what they need to do to follow their oath and continue to if needed report things that they seed that are unethical or illegal. Maybe at their own peril now. Thank you so much for coming in. I appreciate it. Thank you for having me. China is now reporting 97 people died in one day. Yesterday. From the coronavirus. That write brings the death toll to 910 people. Making the virus now deadlier than the sars epidemic nearly two decades ago. And there are now more than 40,000 people 40,000 confirmed cases around the world as well. The virus isnt showing signs of slowing down as so much of it remains unknown about it. How it really started. How it actually is spreading. How to treat it. Today, a new effort gets under way to try to find some of the answers. The World Health Organization is finally were learning more about the cruise ship under quarantine. Number of infections on board, nearly doubled today. Cnns will ripley is live in tokyo, benz follhes been follo the developments. What are you hearing from the Cruise Ship Passengers . Reporter well, people on the ship, especially those who are still untested for coronavirus, the japanese government says they wont test everybody, theyre only going to test people who have a fever. And so what theyre what the cruise ship captain told passengers is the new cases, 65 new cases that sprung up, he said those were people who were exposed to the virus before the quarantine began. He said it is not the result of the quarantine failing, not a result of the virus coming through peoples air vents, it is people who were actually exposed and many of them had no idea they had coronavirus because they didnt show symptoms. And this is something we dont report about a lot. The numbers are scary. The number of deaths continues to climb. But so far the coronavirus this year has killed hundreds, every single year, this season at flu kills hundreds of thousands. So i spoke with rebecca frazer, American Woman who tested positive for coronavirus, i spoke with her at her hospital, where shes under quarantine here in tokyo, she was waving at me through the window, no one is aloud into her room and she said shes feeling great, not even getting treated for coronavirus. She has a couple of friends on the ship who tested positive. Theyre in the same situation and her husband, kent, even though hes right next to her for days, he doesnt even have it. He wasnt part of this new group of people who were infected. The vast majority of patients are going to recover. That does not stop the online trolling. Listen to what they told me. This fear of mob mentality fear is unwarranted. Rebecca was talking about the people online and things they were saying. Just today i got a message from somebody who said dont come home. A got a couple of really threatening messages. People can be really nasty. Reporter yeah, people told her not to come home because theyre afraid there is going to be shes going to spread something that is going to cause an epidemic. The reality is that for her, this experience has been much less intense than even a cold she had recently. First off, thats so sad that people would be attacking them online and secondly this adds importantly another layer of the complex picture that is surrounding this virus that youre seeing. Thanks so much. Appreciate it. Good to see you. So what about the efforts now then to curb the outbreak and the criticism that china is facing for not being more transparent about its efforts so far, especially in the beginning. Joining me now is lawrence gostin, an Advisory Committee for the World Health Organization. Great to see you. Thank you for being here. What are you making of the death toll now that were talking about this reaching 910 worldwide from this virus . We have an escalating epidemic, it could become a pandemic. Fortunately the death rate is low. It is actually on par with flu. So it is upwards of about 3 death rate. So it is not very lethal, but the number of cases is rising and so were going to see more deaths, were going to see more illness. So we need to take it seriously. This is a novel coronavirus. One big element of where the alarm comes from, surrounding this, is that it is so new. It is so unknown. There is so much not known about it yet. And thats where the research and transparency comes in. The World Health Organization finally has been able to have a team on its way to mainland china. What are they going to be able to do, do you think . Could this make the difference in getting a handle on this crisis . Really all depends. First of all, they should have china should have invited the World Health Organization, the u. S. , cdc and other experts into the hot zone weeks ago. This is really late. Im glad they have invited w. H. O. s Health Emergency team in, put we dont know a lot of things. We dont know whether or not theyre going to have access to full epidemiological and other Public Health information, we dont know if theyre going to be able to independently verify anything. We dont know if theyre going to have freedom of action within china. And so i really want to know the details, what the rules of engagement are, and what the contingent of w. H. O. And cdc personnel will be. What they need to do is be there on the ground, and help china bring this epidemic under control because china does not have it contained. So we have seen new images just today of chinese president xi jinping in public, you know, donning a mask. See some images of it there. You told the Washington Post you feel you all were deceived. Are you talking about deceived by china in terms of how serious this virus was early on or also talking about the World Health Organization here as well. Well, the World Health Organization was actually reporting the data that china was giving to them and these data turned out to be false. First of all, we now have a pretty good idea that china held on to the information about known cases for several weeks. And that let millions of people travel outside of the hot zone in wuhan in Hubei Province within china. And so they were telling and then even when they were reporting it, they were reporting very, very low death rates, very, very low case counts. And so the Public Health community was being very reassured that there would be no large scale epidemic and, of course, then the reports just kept coming out, coming out, escalating, escalating. Do you still feel deceived, lawrence . I think now we have much better idea about how significant this epidemic is, and china may be getting the message now, but it is a very inscrutable company, china. W. H. O. Never had to deal with a country quite with the political and economic influence and also were not getting unofficial data sources which International Law requires because there is no robust civil society. Scientists, journalists in what theyre going to report. So we really have to just rely on the chinese and thats why im hoping that w. H. O. On the ground can independently verify the accuracy of the data were getting. Well see first and foremost what they are able to get, what access theyre able to have. Looking forward to having you on again. Thank you very much. Really appreciate it. Very few things can shock anymore. This one probably should. We got gristle pot pies just in to cnn, attorney general bill barr confirming now the Justice Department is receiving and vetting information from the president s personal attorney rudy uni about his political operation in ukraine. But, the ag also notes that there seems to be taking the information with something of a grain of salt. This acknowledgement comes after senator Lindsey Graham revealed this, ill play it for you, yesterday. Can you clarify, you said you talked to attorney general barr. This morning. This morning. Has the department of justice been ordered to investigate the bidens . No. The department of justice is recei receiving information coming out of the ukraine from rudy. Already . To see he told me they had created a process that rudy could give information and would see if it is verified. Let me bring in evan perez. You were in the press conference with the attorney general just now on when this came up. What else did he say . There was quite a surprise for the for Lindsey Graham to make the comments. The Justice Department and particularly bill barr, the attorney general, have been keeping their distance from Everything Associated with Rudy Giuliani. But today the attorney general said that he confirmed that what Lindsey Graham said, he said that the Justice Department had set up a process out in the field by which the department can look at and vet the information, these allegations that Rudy Giuliani has been making dense former Vice President biden and his son and his business dealings in ukraine. Take a listen to what the attorney general had to say. The doj has the obligation to have an open door to anybody who wishes to provide us information that they think is relevant. Any information coming in about ukraine could be carefully scrutinized by the department and its Intelligence Community partners so that we can assess its credibility. And thats true for all information that comes to the department relating to the ukraine, including anything mr. Giuliani might provide. And, kate, as you noted, you can hear from the attorney generals words that there seems to be a lot of skepticism about the veracity of some of the claims that Rudy Giuliani and the president have been making. You can bet people at 1600 pennsylvania avenue might be taking a second look at what the attorney general has to say today. Real quick, does this necessarily mean the Justice Department is investigating the bidens . It does not. This is a process theyre trying taupe c to keep as much as possible outside the building. You can tell the attorney general doesnt believe any of this. Seems that was uncomfortable for the attorney general to say the least. Good to see you. Thank you very much. Really appreciate it. Its been a fluid race, but one certainty out of New Hampshire is a lot of voters still havent made up their minds. More than a quarter of democratic voters are still undecided in the New Hampshire polling. So what are they looking for, then . Thank you so much for joining me. You made your decision. Youll be voting for Elizabeth Warren tomorrow. Why do you think so many of your fellow New Hampshire voters are having trouble deciding, though . I think there are three reasons. One is donald trump, and a lot of people have personal reactions to donald trump. So some think, oh, its all the lies, therefore, im going to look for somebody who is honest. To some degree, Bernie Sanders appeals to that group. Hes said the same thing for 40 years so that conveys a sense of honesty. I think others react to that saying, well, if you havent changed your opinion in 40 years, you really dont know whats going on with the world. The other reaction is simple competence. And the perception that everything is completely chaotic, so to people like that, i think theyll want to look for some sort of normalcy, so joe biden looks good to them, maybe Amy Klobuchar looks good to them. Some people are looking for intelligence. I think thats why Pete Buttigieg has done well over the last two months and i think thats why nobody really saw that coming. Again, it goes back to my own personal opinion about how we react differently to donald trump. The other pieces, there were so many candidates this time that i think people were waiting for some guidance, and i think that iowa did that. New hampshire people will say iowa never matters, but it always does, and so it sort of limited the field. You can roughly break the primary into two groups, and theyre about 40 to 45 of the vote. Theres the progressive wing. Thats Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Bernie has the upper hand in that argument right now, though warren has very good ground game and could still surprise yet.
