People or people with rage or hate, sick people. Im all in favor of it. It doesnt seem confusing, so why is that confusing . Because the president has said that before with no followthrough. Here he was just after the mass shooting in parkland, florida. Were going to be very strong on background checks, well be doing very strong background checks. We want to be very powerful and strong on background checks. We certainly have to strengthen background checks. Everybody agrees with that. Were really i think going to have the support of the nra having to do with background checks. Very strong background checks. Again, nothing happened. In the Washington Post has new reporting that may help explain why these promises seem to evaporate into thin air. Three letters, the nra. According to the post, trump spoke with the chief executive wayne la pierre and he told the president that expanding background checks, quote, would not be popular among trump supporters. So now what . Joining us now is a Washington Post reporter behind the story, josh. Tell us more about this call. So wayne la pierre, the head of the nra called the president on tuesday after the president seemed to publicly support some expanded background checks. Nra officials had been in close touch with nick mulvaney, but wayne la pierre elevated it to the president. Theres been a lot of people in the president s ear. Lots of advisers, lots of friends from new york. Kind of a various group of people. But the nra is particularly important inside the white house where many of the aides in fact are a little less liberal than the president op gun control and dont want much to happen. This seems something of a pattern, though. The president says that hes open to expanded background checks. Then the nra reaches out to him and tells him to back off or tells him something. Are you hearing anything that suggests that the president s reaction is going to be any different, though, this time, josh . Well, if you took the current and former officials, what you learn is the president may go along with something if it has significant political support. Hes not going to jump out of his or bit and support something is that doesnt have a strong chance of passing. The nra has a large constituency, the president knows that. And it keeps it from becoming an easy call for him. I spoke to joe man chen yesterday who talked to the president after he talked to the nra and he said the president was still committed to doing something and wanted the senators to come back and do it. But as you said in your in troe, weve heard from from the president before and the momentum faded and he didnt pull it through the finish line. So whether well do it this time, time will only tell. Unfortunately, we have to fall back on that. But on your interview with m manchin, because i think that manchin told you something important, that you told President Trump that no gun safety bill is going to pass, because obviously hes been pushing something ever since sandy hook, but no gun safety bill is going to pass, will succeed without trump backing it. And i hear that, but again, we have seen the senate buck the president before, force the president s hand on big issues. Russia sanctions is one example. When what are you hearing from manchin and the other lawmakers youre talking to on why gun measures are so different . Well, the advisers and folks in the white house think exactly what manchin thinks, that if the president doesnt go out and give cover to supporting a bill that is seen as limiting gun control rights that there could be serious recriminations for republicans back home. When the president goes out and says hes willing to do something, republican lawmakers are a lot more inclined to come along. Hes popular in the party, 90 by all accounts the president has in the republican party. Its hard for republicans to buck the president on this or go against the president. Manchin, some of the supporters say we probably only about 45 or 45 votes right now and theres no chance of it passing. It would take the president pushing it to get it over the finish line. They told us hes unlikely to bring anything to the floor unless at least half the republicans on the senate could support it. Who could do that . President trump probably could do something along those lines. And probably President Trump alone the way its looking right now. Chris murphy, you guys also talked to him and hes one of the most vocal advocates for gun safety and control measures. He told you what difference can the federal government make in what is largely a state decision . What is chris murphy saying there . Is that his is that just his pure skepticism that congress will actually do anything, get anything done . I think theres a skepticism among some in congress that whatever they do will be piecemeal and once states come up with broader and stronger laws that not much will happen if you took the particular democratic senators, they say that a lot of these solutions, while obviously they would vote for them, they dont see them as necessarily moving the needle all that much and they think it would take a state by state comprehensive approach to make a difference. So now all eyes on governors like Governor Mike Dewine of ohio and then all eyes once again on the white house. Go ahead. And we saw when dewine came out to the event in ohio that people were chanting at him do something and weve seen a little bit of movement there. I think what the house is trying to figure out is whether this current anger or kind of the current tone and mood of the country, wanting something to do more is going to pass or not. I think that will probably make a big difference on what happens here. Interesting. Great reporting as always, josh, thanks for bringing it. Appreciate it. Thanks for having me. I want to go from washington to dayton, ohio right now where this conversation about gun and stopping gun violence could not be more urgent. Joining us now is the city manager of dayton. Thank you so much for joining me. Youre welcome. Ahead of the president s visit you were skeptical about the president coming to town. Now after President Trump came to dayton, visited and returned to washington, what are you thinking . Are you happy that the president came . Well, i dont know that its my place to be happy or unhappy. It is the office of the president and as a local government we certainly appreciate the highest office being present in our town. I think whats more important is how our city will continue to galvanize and sustain the Energy Around having something impactful occur and lower this gun violence across the country. And that was part of the message that the mayor of dayton and senator sherrod brown, that they had for the president when he met with them yesterday during his visit. I want to play for you im sure you saw it, but i want to play for our viewers what the senator and mayor, they had to say after the visit with the president yesterday. He was comforting and he did the right things and melania did the right things. Its his job in part to comfort people. Im glad he did it in those hospital rooms. I think the victims and the First Responders were grateful that the president of the United States came to dayton. So they said that, but then the president went after both of them, saying that that press conference was in his words a fraud and misrepresented what took place when they were at the hospital. I know that mayor whaley says shes simply confused by the president s reaction to all of this, but what do you make of it . I would say confused is a good way to sum it up. Clearly as i stood at that press conference, that is not at all what i heard with regards to how it was characterized by mr. Trump. So we dont really have any answers with regards to how he walked away with that kind of impression. The fact that he did walk away with that kind of impression, what does that say about his view on the visit, do you think . Well, i think that there is a lot of frustration around the visit, but certainly my hope is as our mayor is extremely active and has already been galvanizing the 61 mayors who have experienced, unfortunately, these mass shootings, and works very well across the aisle, im hoping that dayton, because we are a city of innovation, can innovate around this very difficult conversation and be and influence some Good National policy around gun violence. And that is an important conversation that should have been happening and is happening once again, unfortunately because of what happened in your city. In terms of what actually will be done, can be done, thats the huge question. One policy that has been proposed and requested is a ban on assault weapons, but that is something the white house is already indicating is a nonstarter. From your perspective, if what the federal government would pull off, and this is still a bit of a long shot to say that it would pass this considering theres really if past is prologue, we can see what could be happening. But if what the federal government would pass is expanding background checks and red flag laws, would you consider that a success or failure for the people of dayton . I would consider that a step in the right direction. You know, i have said before there are a lot of other countries across the world who have made gun violence a priority and put federal policy in place to address it. And our great country of the United States of america certainly has the talent, the intelligence, and hopefully the will, to do the same thing for our citizens that other countries have done for theirs. Shelly dickson thank you so much for being here, thank you for all of our exhaustive efforts in what is such a difficult time for your city. Its going to be some tough challenging weeks and days ahead. Thanks so much for being here. Youre very welcome. Coming up for us, we have a cnn exclusive. Lawyers for the family of the el paso shooter tell cnn that the suspects mom reached out to police weeks ago in their home town because she was concerned about her son having an aktype firearm. This is a report you will only see on cnn. Lets go over to brian todd who has been digging into this. He joins us from el paso. Brian, please, what more are you learning . Reporter well, kate, this information coming from our investigative team, scott glover. Theyve spoken to attorneys for the family of the alleged shooter. These attorneys have told cnn that in the weeks before the massacre here at this walmart, the mother of the alleged shooter called the Police Department in allen texas. She called the Police Department there and said she was concerned about her son ownering an aktype firearm, clearly a reference to an ak47 assault rifle. She said that she was not necessarily concerned that he would pose a threat to anyone. The lawyers are making that clear to us. But she was concerned about his age, his maturity level and his lack of experience handling that kind of a firearm. The critical thing is how did the Police Respond . According to the lawyers who spoke to cnn, the Public Safety officer who the mother talked to, said that under texas law and given the circumstances that she described, her son was legally entitled to have that weapon. Now, were there other questions asked by the police, according to the attorneys, no, not really. They didnt ask her any other information. She did not volunteer her name or her sons name. The police were basically saying to cnn, look, if the mother didnt give any more information than she was willing to give, theres not much more we could have done. But there are questions being raised about questions the police could have asked the mother. Could they have pressed her further on this. The police have not responded to our request for documentation regarding this call. But about again, the mother concerned about her son owning an akstyle firearm, calling the police in the weeks before the shooting. Until addition, kate, the lawyers for the family are saying there were not red flags here, that the mother was not concerned about him being a threat. He was not a volatile or erratic behaving kid. Thank you so much for bringing that. I really appreciate it. We do need to take you now from el paso to mississippi, where another heartbreaking story is playing out today. Young children left stranded at daycare, arriving them from their first day of school to find their houses, their homes, empty. And spending the night in a local gym, depending on the kindness of neighbors and strangers. This happened yesterday, after almost 700 undiemtd immigrants were picked up by immigration authorities in a massive sweep in six different cities in mississippi. Look at what this means for their families. Government, police put your heart, let my parents be free. Please dont leave the children. I need my dad. My dad is not a criminal. Oh, my god. Cnns Dianne Gallagher is in mississippi following this. What more are you hearing about these raids . So kate, i want to point out here that was the first day of school, so so many of these children were excited to go to school for the first day and that turned into absolute devastation for them. I talked to one mother who was still out here today hoping that theyre going to drop her husband off after he was detained at the plant behind me around 8 00 yesterday morning. She said their 5yearold started kindergarten yesterday and shes had to explain to him why dad isnt coming home right now. I was kicked off the property a few moments as, as were those families who have been waiting. Two buss showed up last night with some of the people who were detained from this facility. Some of the people who were detained from this facility were dropped off at sites almost an hour away and theyve been depending on churches and neighbors to try and get people back home. Its that kindness of strangers that you were talking about there that led to all of those children who were being picked up by friends or guardians or just kindness of strangers, again, from daycare and school and stayed in that gym with donated food. I want you to listen to what the owner said about why he did this. Were going to have a bed available for them and were going to get food for them to get them through the night. And if they need transport to school, we can arrange that as well. I understand the law and everything has a system. But Everybody Needs to hold the kids first and foremost in their minds and theyve tried to give them a place to stay just to kind of ease the pain a little b bit. Reporter some people have been released. Ive seen people with ankle monitors waiting for their spouses. So some of them had both parents that were picked up in this raid and tensions in the Latino Community after the hate crime and the massacre in el paso. One woman told she she feels even more targeted now, even though she woos born in the u. S. , just based on the color of her skper and her last name. What those children are going through and what kind of trauma that leaves them with, even if they are back with a parent. If they didnt get picked up from school, what they returned home from to deal with, it is devastating. Thank you so much. Fresh off the presses, a new poll of iowa caucusgoers shows some very interesting movement in the 2020 democratic field. Joe biden is Holding Steady with 28 support among democrats in the new Monmouth University poll. But look at Elizabeth Warren making some big gains from the last time they took this poll. Now 19 support, compare that to where she stood in april at 7 . And where she goes up, someone needed to go down and Bernie Sanders down to 9 in iowa now. Jeff zeleny joins me now from des moines iowa. You always have such a big smile when youre in iowa. Whats the big message that iowa caucusgoers are sending with these new numbers . Well, kate, even on a rainy morning here at the iowa state fair, i can tell you that joe biden is remaining consistent in those polls as you said, with a big takeaway from this is that Bernie Sanders really has fallen in the new Monmouth University iowa poll and of course Elizabeth Warren has climbed and that tracks largely with what we are seeing on the ground after the last several weeks and months. Of course a function of the debates. But one thing that also is clear from this is that joe biden of course is leading this, but the question hanging over this entire primary campaign is, is he the placeholder in the place or is he the frontrunner in the race . Talking to voters here this morning, you get a variety of answers. They like how hes performed in the second debate more than the first. But people are still keeping an open mind. Thats one of the reasons joe biden will be here talking this afternoon at the famous Des Moines Register soap box. Its where politicians stand on an actual soap box and give their speech. The governor Steve Bullock from montana will be speaking here. So even though the polls give a sense of where the race is right now, iowa frontrunners are often fleeting. Howard dean was leading this back in the 2004 campaign. Hillary clinton was leading it in the 2008 campaign. So it certainly theres at least six more months. Kate, another headline out of this poll, andrew yang and tom steyer. Andrew yang has qualified for the september debate stage because he did reach the polling threshold. Tom steyer is one poll away from meeting that on the threshold. He still needs to get some donors. So the debate stage in september could still be a little more crowded than some democrats had hoped. And lets be honest. A rainy day at the iowa state fair is still better than no day at the iowa state fair. Great to see you. They still have pork chops here today. Deal. Thank you. The deadly mass shooting in el paso on saturday morning wasnt just an attack on that city. Look no further than the gun mans online writings. It was an attack aimed specifically at latinos and now across the country theyre telling cnn that they are also living in fear. Polo sandoval is here with me. What are you hearing . We did hear from some of the hispanics americans who may that they have been unfazed by what happened in el paso, but for many, myself included, it certainly hits close to home. On saturday those whatifs were playing in my head. What if they would have driven south to my home town where my family shops at the walmart . What were seeing outside of new york city is that it is extremely difficult to overstate how much of a turning point el paso was. Reporter some 2,200 miles from el paso, hispanics in long island new york say they are living in fear. The attacks in el paso reverberated across the country, including near in new york, not far from where there was a series of attacks targeting latinos a decade ago. Reporter what has changed in the last few days . Is there more fear . Translator for me theres an increased fear, adding we may not talk about it, but its definitely palpable in and around our countries. We deserve dignity, respect and peace. Reporter her feelings were shared by many we spoke to, including her coworker. He was trying to kill immigrants. Thats why he went all the way down to the border, so thats scary. Reporter this concern has been heavy on the minds of the families he helps. Weve seen a lot of fear in the community, because of that, and because its real now. Its not like we can connect those dots and people know that its just because of the color of their skin. Reporter its also personal for latinos on the west coast. Translator when things like this happen, we get more worried and we cant remain calm, says jose sanchez. This week President Trump called on the nation to condemn the racism and white supremacy. For many it fell short trchlts sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in america. He does not acknowledge some of the things posted online and he rambled about an hispanic invasion of texas. Our country is full. Were full. How do you stop these people . You cant. Shoot them. Thats only in the panhandle you can get away with that statement. Reporter the president s words some say help create a climate of fear among the 60 million latinos. Back at the scene on the latest attack on the Hispanic Community in years, the shock and the grief are still raw. Were being attacked and our government needs to step in. If not, the people here will step in. Reporter others are putting their message in writing at the evergrowing makeshift memorial, three little girls said they were american citizens and the daughters of mexican parents. Were afraid to go outside, they wrote to the president. We hope you read this message. God bless you. Reporter and further proof that that proof is real, the mexican kboft has reached out to u. S. Officials asking for information about the shooting in el paso. We want to help determine whether theres an actual risk from white supremacist in the United States to their citizens living on this side of the border. They should not be forgotten at all in this. Thank you so much, polo, for bringing that to light, thank you so much. Lets get back to el paso, the 22 lives lost there. Joining me right now is andrew tore es. He lost two family members in the weekends shooting. His cousin and her husband. Andrew, thank you for being here. Thank you. Its been five days now since that shooting. How are you and your family doing today . Ill be completely honest and say that every time that i hear the news, i was just watching your station, i was just hearing you air your station right now and telling me everything that ive been told before and its got me shaky and its got me wanting to cry and its got me feeling some sort of raw emotion that really cant be described unless youre a person that actually identifies this way. Ive been on the news before and ive stated that i am a halfwhite, halfhispanic individual. I am halfmexican and my mexican an seft regoes back for centuries. My grandfather, i ask him for advice every time i come to the show and i thought i would share this with you. I would say that if you are a person thats wondering what this is like and how it feels to be these people, imagine your grandfather asking you to go to the store to buy you shoe shine, to go to a funeral for his niece, who had children and grandchildren, and an entire family that loved her. Its hard. Its really, really hard. It is also, as you said, its pretty much near possible impossible to really put it into words, but thank you for doing that. The president , one of the things that has happened in the aftermath of the shooting is the president visited el paso yesterday. The white house really didnt allow reporters to follow along his movements very much so we cant say for sure, but the reports are that he was wellreceived, but the Washington Post is also reporting that none of the victims that are still in the hospital said that they wanted to meet with him. They did not want to meet with him. Youre no fan of the president , but are you glad that he came to your community to see the pain that has hit your town . Ill say that personally i know that i saw the live coverage of President Trump and i will acknowledge that he is trying to do his best at picking up the pieces. However, a lot of people in my community feel as though he is a part of the problem and that, you know, many of the victims, as you mentioned, didnt want to see him right now. They didnt want to hear his condolences. And, you know, i think that thats something that we as a nation have to grasp. We as a nation have to understand. And i feel like there is a large amount of people who do understand the pain and can empathize with the victims and can empathize that we really its not that we dont appreciate his visit. Its not that we dont appreciate what hes trying to do. Its that we understand that just his very presence, its frightening. Its frightening. Its as though this whole country is suffering through anxiety and, you know, these different traumatic emotions and feelings. I dont know if you saw, but the video that really struck me, someone sent it to me of new york city. People scrambling, people running because of a motorcycle. For me, you know, i used to live in new york city. I lived there for two years. And i would be one of those people running. And i think that too many people can relate to that now, you know . On the same day of the president s visit, he he said that the whole point was to be with grieving families like yours and to grieve with the community. He also then left the community and started attacking political rivals, local officials and even the media, from joe biden to the mayor of dayton. When you saw that after the visit, what did you think, andrew . I personally stand with my re representatives. Ive stated this before, im not a staunch voter on any party. But i do stand with my representatives. These people are people from this community, they are mourning the loss of all of these people, just as we are. They are feeling the traumatic effects, just as much as we are. Personally, i think that any attack on these people, its so petty. It deserves no attention. Right now what were going to be doing moving forward needs the attention. The healing, thats what needs attention. The families, thats what needs attention. Actual reform, you know, gun reform, we need these things. We need immigration reform. We need these various different principles, but right now we needed an apology. We needed him to owe up and just say i recognize that at my events that i foster this rhetoric and that i want to say sorry. Thats really all we want from him. Andrew, thank you for coming on. Thank you for being so eloquent. I really appreciate it. Thank you. I know that it means so very little because of the pain that youre feeling, but we are so sorry for your loss. Thank you so much and thank you for giving the people of el paso a platform. The new report is the consensus of more than 100 scientists and they say without all of us changing the way we grow food and eat it, the world will never be able to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. This new warning puts a spotlight directly on u. S. Agriculture and farmers already facing the devastating effects of the Climate Crisis and record flooding and drought. Heres cnns bill weir. We had a very, very wet spring. Too much rain to plant. Too much rain to plant. Reporter justin jordan is among the millions of American Farmers living on an emotional roller coaster that only seems to go down. So this corn is almost two feet shorter than it normally is. Reporter thanks to a bizarro spring, hes looking at a 30 drop in yield. Its a feeling of helplessness and stress is kind of what it feels like. But you just do what you can with what you have to work with. Reporter at least he has a crop. Too many farmers lost everything to epic floods. And even the lucky ones are losing sleep over fear of an early frost and trade wars and the highest farm debt in a generation. And on top of it all comes the latest alarming report from the ipcc, which finds that growing food from india to iowa will only get harder as the climate gets harsher. Were going to see by midcentury by current projections that our number of days above 90 degrees is going to rise from about 17 days per year above 90 degrees in des moines. That will be more up like 50 to 70. Reporter the report finds threequarters of the earths icepaved surface has paved, plowed or deforested. Great for economies. Horrible for natures cycles. With all the diesel and fertilizer used to grow the modern meal, they say agriculture is to blame for nearly a quarter of Greenhouse Gas emissions. But heres the good news. Right now every corn plant in this field is pulling carbon out of the sky and putting it in the ground. With the right amount of innovation and financial motivation, a smart farmer can leave it there and still field the world. Iowa could be one giant carbon sink. Unlike miners and drillers and fraccers. They dont have to change careers in order to help save life as we know it. Just listen to all the birds too. Something you dont hear out in a cornfield. Theres so much more not only the plant biodiversity but the wildlife diversity. Its life. Exactly. Reporter justin takes advantage of a federal program that pays him to let pot of his fields go wild, which brings higher yields in the long term. Over in nebraska, Brian Honeycutt is trying out cuttingedge science funded by bill gates that uses bacteria instead of synthetic fertilizer, the stuff that creates ocean dead zones and red tides. Thats the petroleumbased industry we live in. The more we can move to more natural bacteria based, thats better for all of us. Reporter and even some conservatives like ray gasser are joining this green revolution, even though the republican refuses to blame a warming planet on human habits. So how do you feel about big members of your party, even the president casting doubt and skepticism into whether or not humans can help stop this . I think its more about not having severe regulations, you know. I think one size fits all regulations really does not fit agriculture anywhere. Reporter but like Many Republican neighbors, he still embraces wind energy, cover crops and soil conservation. As we farm a little bit differently, as we sequester nutrients and carbon, were doing the right thing. And thats what its about is trying to do the right thing. We all wanting to do that. Absolutely. And it shouldnt be political. Amen, brother. Reporter but of course everything in america is political, especially iowa. State fair kicks off this weekend.
