Nothing of otto warmbeirs dire condition. Before boarding air force one to head home, the president took time to hit back at Michael Cohen. He lied a lot, but it was very interesting because he didnt lie about one thing. He said no collusion with the russian hoax. I said i wonder why he didnt lie about that too like everything else. I was impressed that he didnt say i thought there was collusion. He said no collusion. And i was a little impressed by that. So he believes him sometime apparently. Michael cohen testifying behind closed doors right now i see chairman of house intelligence walking past you right there, adam schiff. Tell me right now what you think lawmakers want to ask him today. Well, this is just breaking up for votes. We are expecting a very long day. So far were not getting clear sense of how much new they have learned. They have really been in the room for about 90 minutes so far. The way the questioning has been going is that democrats get an hour and republicans get an hour and it will go back and forth for some time. What schiff told me was that he wanted to drill down on a number of suggebjects that were not fu explored including how it came about that he went about lying to congresss very committee about the pursuit of the trump tow eer moscow project. The president said cohen was more involved than let on schiff said he wants to learn if there was a white house role and wants to know about the allegation that cohen made that roger stone told the president in his presence that stone had just spoken to Julian Assange and that there was going to be a big dump of emails to hurt the clinton campaign, something that the white house and stone have denied for some time. There is expected to be a lot more questions about that. The moment lawmakers just getting in ready for a very long day of questioning, ultimately, well see how much more light he sheds on all of this. Absolutely. If yesterday is any precursor we know how long it can be. Once cohen is done on capitol hill what are the next steps . Joining me now democratic congressman of maryland. Happy to be with you. After yesterday, do you believe Michael Cohen that the president committed crimes while in office . Absolutely. He brought documentary evidence with him. So he clearly was involved in supervising the hush money payoffs to the various mistresses. Yesterday we also learned that the president s lawyers reviewed the testimony that Michael Cohen gave to congress which was false and purgeurious. We are going to figure out exactly which lawyers we heard from were involved and what they did to alter or doctor his testimony to change the dates about the moscow project because remember the republicans who were jubilant in reviewing the fact that Michael Cohen is a convicted liar failed to tell everybody what he was convicted of lying for. He was lying for the president and saying that the president had stopped being involved in the moscow tower negotiations in january of 2016 when it went all the way through the summer i think it was. So it appears like the president himself through his lawyers was involved in the decision to commit that false testimony. I have another question about the moscow project in a second. If you believe that the president has committed a crime and this relates to the hush money payments during his time in office, what do you do next . Thats a great question, the dilemma that the congress and the country face right now. We have a president who clearly is trying to turn the government of the United States into a money making operation as mr. Cohen described it. He has been a cheat, fraud, tax fraud, committed insurance fraud. On the standards of the republicans in the Clinton Administration we would be clearly running full fledged into an impeachment campaign. They impeached bill clinton over telling one lie about sex. I think we have a higher standard here. Just because you committed st statatory crimes doesnt mean it means impeachment. We want to see that these are offenses against the character of the republican ability to govern as a democracy. That is a hard question that the democrats will confront. I was very proud of the way the majority behaved yesterday. We were much more civil and composed. The republicans, all they can do is call Michael Cohen a liar. As i said, they are not upset that he lied to congress. They are upset that he stopped lying to congress. He stopped lying to congress for the president and yesterday he told us the truth. Importantly, though, as you mentioned the concept of impeachment, frauom what your heard yesterday, do you believe, did you hear anything yesterday that you believe you should be investigating as an Impeachable Offense of the president . I think it is very serious that the president was involved in committing Campaign Finance offenses and involved in sending himself checks for hush money payoff payoffs and organizing hush money payoffs through various campaign and corporate devices. Thats Serious Business in terms of getting yourself elected president of the United States. And they do begin to go oo the character of what kind of republic we are going to have. I think we are just scratching the surface in terms of knowing. We will probably get to the bottom of each of the lines of inquiry. You are not necessarily there yet. You talked about the moscow project. This comes down to this moment where Michael Cohen says that his statement to congress which he lied and he has admitted he has, he said the white house looked over it and worked with him on it. Let me play for you that moment. Each specific lawyers reviewed and edit your statement to congress and did they make changes to your statement . There were changes made, additions. Were they changes about the timing . There were several changes that were made including how we were going to handle that message. Seculo denies that he had any hand in changing the timing that the moscow deal was being discussed. Who do you believe . First of all, there may have been other lawyers involved. This is what we have to get to the bottom of. Unfortunately, of course, we are limited to five minutes questioning. I think i hit the buzzer right at that point when we were getting to the heart of the matter. I think that my colleagues on the Intelligence Committee today will followup with that. I know that we on the Oversight Committee will followup with it. When you mean do you want to bring him up . Is that do you expect that to happen before your committee . Sure. Again, im not the chair of the committee. We absolutely need to know were the president s lawyers directly involved in the decision to lie to congress. This is what the republicans were so upset about yesterday that he had lied to congress. We want to know everybody involved in that plot. I think it is very unlikely that Michael Cohen decided to do it on his own. He was clearly acting as an agent of the president. I tend to believe that the president s lawyers coached him in the right direction and helped to shape the message that was in the testimony. There is almost unanimous reporting, congressman, that Michael Cohen wanted a role in the Trump White House. This was somewhat of a focus in the hearing yesterday. Did he want a job in the Trump White House . He says he did not. Michael cohen denied it over and over again yesterday under oath. Do you think he perjured himself . The whole question is an irrelevant distraction. He brought documentary it more leads to credibility. He has no incentive to be lying at this point. Everything he said was perfectly consistent and coherent. Remember the republicans are upset because he stopped lying for the president. There are so many people going to jail who have been indicted and faced convictions and look at manafort and paige and look at stone and so on and so forth. They are not upset about those people. It is when you go against the president that they get upset. They want to call him a renegade or a traitor. I was impressed by this guy. He was a hard core republican, i think the vice chair for finance who said im going to stop trying. He is not a hard core republican. He was a democrat. He couldnt vote for trump in new york because he had not changed his party affiliation. Doesnt he have a position. He became a republican only in order to hold that position. It is slightly confusing. Its not very confusing to me because the guy was a loyal trump partisan for more than ten years. I would love it if some republicans said lets ask him questions to find out what happened. None of them were asking questions about President Trump. They were all meant to try to beat up on Michael Cohen. I thought it was an embarrassing exercise on their part. It sounds like you have a lot more questions. Im interested to see what moves your Committee Makes next. Right now President Trump is on his way back from vietnam after that end to his high stakes nuclear summit. The two leaders canceling a working lunch and cutting short their visit after failing to broker any agreement on north Koreas Nuclear program. Despite that said the talks ended on good terms. He is quite a guy and quite a character. I think our relationship is very strong, but at this time we had some options and we decided not to do any of the options. Sometimes you have to walk. And this was just one of those times. Cnn is in hanoi with much more on this. It was a very surprising end after all of this lead up. What happened . I know, its hard to believe. We know that the North Koreans have been dug in for a very long time. Kim jonguns new years day message said as much. I guess the hope knowing that this whole thing was planned was that they were making this incremental progress even though this was a very compressed timeframe for those lower level meetings. But you would have thought that coming here and having something called a signing ceremony on the white house public schedule that they had something organized, but obviously not. What a surprise ending to this most trumpian of cliff hangers that the big thing that both sides were willing to give up was nothing. I think the most telling piece of reporting comes from a u. S. Official telling cnn trumps closest aides were telling him north korea seems dug in. We dont think they are going to budge on this but the president still felt that meeting facetoface was going to change it. This has been the biggest criticism of trumps approach here. He insists on a top down approach. His critics say that is never going to work. You need to have something laid out before the leaders can sign on the line. And this happening yet again seems to prove that. It will also be almost as surprising if President Trump changes his kind of position and strategy when it comes to talks with kim jongun after this. Very importantly, also from this, put the Nuclear Talks aside. The president declared that he takes kim jonguns word when it comes to the treatment of american student who was held and released in a coma and died days later when he returned to the United States. What is the president saying here . Reporter this is just shocking and reminiscent of things he said believing vladimir putin, believing the Saudi Crown Prince over the khashoggi murder. He just keeps going on these rifts talking about he doesnt this can that kim was personally responsible. That might be true. He goes on and on about the terrible condition of the crowded prisons in north korea as if kim jongun didnt vhave hand in this. He said he takes this dictator at his word. Now we are hearing from former ambassador to the u. N. Nikki haley who also clearly didnt like what she heard here. She tweeted just now hold on, let me find it. Americans know the cruelty that was placed on Otto Warmbier by the north koreaen regime. When you were hearing this going on you thought of that family and how this must register to them as well as to families of other people that are held by similar regimes around the world. If anything happens in north korea without kim jongun signing off on it. Thanks so much. Great reporting. Coming up for us, why would President Trump trust kim jongun when it comes to Otto Warmbier . We will ask someone who has negotiated with north korea for decades. Michael cohen believes President Trump is being investigated for more potential crimes but not by robert mueller. Sten to mom. Get published now, call for your free publisher kit today one of the biggest moments from Michael Cohens seven hours before congress is when he declared that he knows of more wrong doing that is currently under investigation. Is there any other wrong doing or illegal act that you are aware of regarding donald trump that we havent yet discussed today . Yes. Again, those are part of the investigation thats currently being looked at by the Southern District of new york. And because of that, cohen said he wouldnt go into it any further. Now we have many more questions. Joining me now cnn chief Political Correspondent dana bash. Great to see you guys. Jennifer, what is your best guess . I know you love it when i make you guess. What the Southern District is investigating that is not to do with russia . We know about the hush money payments which got buttoned up yesterday with the provision of the checks and the Additional Information that every time cohen was talking to keith richardson, Stormy Daniels lawyer who would get trumps okay, that is buttoned up and done. Of course, we know about the inauguruation committee. They issued subpoenas about that. The other two categories that we dont know much about are the Trump Organization itself, so corporate malfeasance there, tax fraud, bank fraud. That is one of the interesting things that came up late in the hearing yesterday was talk of deflating assets for tax reasons and insurance reasons. Thats the other category. There is the Trump Organization stuff. That i would put in the bucket of trumps personal things. So we have the Deutsche BankFinancial Statements that he alleged submitted in order to get a loan. That is called bank fraud. For trump personally, you are talking about potential tax fraud and bank fraud. I think they are looking into all of those categories. The other problem for the president is that we have some state entities looking at him, as well. We had news yesterday that the d. C. Attorney general had subpoenaed the inaugural committee for documents and information. We have the District Attorney in manhattan indicating he is charging paul manafort. That shows a willingness to back stop the charges. We have the attorney general with an investigation going on, lots of problems swirling for trump. This thought in my head of if there is a crime here when it comes to the president committing a crime while in office, what do people do with that . I guess what i mean is politically. What do people do with that if there is a crime committed while the president is in office. Does everyone just move on or is this a turning point . I thought your interview was really telling in keeping with his approach and answers, very cautious on the political impeachment front and what im hearing from members of the democratic majority this morning now that they have been able to digest all of the potential crimes laid out there in the studio. You didnt talk about the potential for Campaign Finance crimes which might be part of the potential crime committed while in the oval office. The caution used is telling because it is when i say it, impeachment is a political decision. A political decision by the house majority, the democrats to say does this reach a high crime and misdemeanor . Do we want to go forward with this for a president who is going to face voters in november of 2020 . I was told from one senior democratic source this morning is post big hearing yesterday, the reaction and action will be keep digging up all of these things inside that Oversight Committee, not necessarily jumping to impeachment. One piece that you mentioned is the big piece of evidence that cohen brought forth, the check. This comes to the hus money payments with the check that he received from trump since trump has been in office. Is that evidence of a crime . Because ive heard republicans during the hearing and after of couldnt that just be the retainer that the president was paying him to be his personal attorney . Anytime you have a cooperating witness and he is not technically signed up, you are trying to corroborate them with evidence that supports what they are telling you. We have him telling us that he had this deal. There was no written retainer agreement that would be in place you would think. So he says here i have this check that supports what im saying. Theyll dig around and try to see whether there is anything else that it could be, but it is definitely supportive of what he is saying. If you have other explanation, they can bring that out and the fact finder would decide that. But it is definitely supportive of what he says. We have that throughout the whole time. On that basis it is squarely in what Michael Cohen was saying. So many more questions from the its good to see you. Thanks so much. Coming up for us, bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Breaking news, the Prime Minister of israel, Benjamin Netanyahu will be charged with bribery and fraud by the nations attorney general. This is according to a source with direct knowledge. This is following a long corruption investigation into netanyahu. And this is potentially a major blow for any leader but for netanyahu as he is seeking a fifth term in office. This was the most Shocking Development from the president s meeting with dictator kim jongun, the president saying that he believes the brutal dictator when he says he knew nothing about the condition of American College student. Listen to this. I dont believe he would have allowed it to happen. Those prisons are rough places and bad things happen. I really dont believe that he was i dont believe he knew about it. He tells me he didnt know about it and i will take at his word. He was held in north korean prison for a year and a half. When he was released in 2017, he was in a coma with no believable information coming in. His death being a symbol of the regime. His parents were guests of President Trumps where the president called them quote powerful witnesses to a menace that threatens our world. And now President Trump says he believes kim jongun. Joining me right now to talk about this and the state of the talks is former democratic governor bill richardson. He has negotiated with north korea several times. Thank you for being here. Your organization sent a mission to north korea in 2016 i believe to try to secure the release of Otto Warmbier. When you hear the president say that he believes kim jongun, what is your reaction . Inconceivable that kim jongun wouldnt know and deeply disappointed that the president would take his word as he has with volunteer putin who claimed that there is no election interfering in the american election. The Foreign Ministry, we were negotiating to try to get otto back. We sent a year, countless meetings with North Koreans in new york. They told me they didnt know of the brain damage. For the leader of north korea, such a high profile case and it was the intelligence people that were holding, that held him in prison after his trial. Its inconceivable that kim jongun wouldnt know. The biggest bargaining chip that north korea had with the yooungz. Thinconceivable, you say. What does that mean . What is the doing then . I think the president , the only thing that came out of this i think very negative summit is the personal relationship between the president and kim jongun. Thats good to maintain. Even if it is based on a lie . It unfortunate. It is almost a human rights violation. The family, i know them. Good people. To let this hang out this way is not right. Its not right. And the president should know better. What needs to happen is a full accounting. Kim jongun should say to his intelligence people, lets tell the truth on this. Theyre not going to do it. They are hiding. Do you think with that statement coming from the president that any american in north korea is in more danger now . Any american hostage around the world especially in a regime like russia. We have a man there that we are trying to get out, his family. The president is going to putin will say i dont know anything about this case. We didnt do anything wrong. They are holding him as a bargaining chip. It doesnt give the family of american hostages must strength and faith. You said over the weekend that you feared that the summit was going to be a dud. We wake up overnight to realize that that is what it seems to have been. What is your reaction to it . Were you surprised that it turned out this way . I was surprised. I thought when you do a summit, you wire some of the results. The gap between our negotiators that i think did a good job, but the president said no, no. I know there are problems. I can fix them. Then i think also with the North Koreans, i found that the Foreign Ministry people were not the negotiators from north korea. They are usually more flexible. I dont think there was much chemistry between the two. I think were trying to hammer out a deal that said in exchange for some sanctions you have to take a path on denuclearizat n denuclearization. We didnt get anything on denuclearization, wide gap on sanctions and the peace treaty. My main issue remains that no Movement Forward on getting more of our remains of our soldiers. After the fact secretary mike pompeo told reporters that they dont have another date set for another meeting. He said it will take a while. We will each need to regroup. I wonder if that is diplomatic speak that they are a step further back than forward. This is a setback. But its also when youre not getting what you want, the way to negotiate is you walk a bit. My worry even though it was negative and this did not turn out well, it was smart for him to walk in. Yeah. It was the right move. There has to be better preparatory work. So you dont get faced with this. There should be a cooling off period. Let mike pompeo be the ones that go back. Dont plan another summit for now. Was this a waste of time . It wasnt a waste of time because if kim just keeps his word that no more missile tests and there is some improvements in north south relations, less tension, thats okay. On the main issue of denuclearization, on missiles, on weapons of mass destruction, we got nothing. The North Koreans tried to pull a fast one. Now the talks have collapsed. We need to continue going forward. Its too dangerous. We have american troops there. We have our allies like japan and south korea. We have to deal with the china dimensi dimension, too. We have to keep going. I also think the fact that still lingering out there is no full accounting of the weapons system of what north korea has. That has to be the first step to even take it seriously that there will be real talk about denuclearization. And you is to verify that they are there. They have hundreds of sites. The North Koreans are so suspicious. They think that if they tell us where the sites are that we are going to bomb the sites. Thank you for being in here. You are one of the few people who have had the conversations with the North Koreans. We hope they are listening to your advice on how to uncollapse the collapsed talks. Members of the Senate Judiciary committee have advanced the controversial nomination of naomi rowe to replace Supreme CourtJustice Brett kavanaugh. She now goes to the senate dogged with some big concerns from both parties. Lets get more now from Supreme Court reporter arian nerne devo. She had a lot of fire directed at her from republicans. First there was joni ernst out of iowa. She had taken a lot of she was really critical of rao for some very early writings on date rape. She said, im going to vote in her favor today, but i found that writing abhorrent. If rao is ever up for Supreme Court, she may not get my vote. Then there was a brand new republican on this committee, hes a freshman, and last week he stunned republicans by saying he had questions about her on abortion, and he took a lot of heat from this machine that has managed to push through a lot of republicans o republicans, or a lot of judges, during the first year of the trump administration. Today he said, ive spoken with her. Ill vote in her favor for now. But he lashed out at people who criticized him. So we really get to see how the trump administrations machine to get judges through confirmation is fraying a little bit. And were seeing some senators pushing back and saying, were going to take a hard look ourselves at some of these nominees. It was pretty unusual. Pretty unusual is right. Lets see what happens next. Good to see you, arianne. Thanks for bringing that to us. Conservatives are gathering for the annual conference, drrks cpac, as we call it. The member of the temporary committee is already talking about primary challenges to donald trump. Jessica, what are you hearing from mcdaniel now . She came out to talk to a group today, and the men interviewing her asked about what she would say to any potential challengers, larry hogan, and bill moore announced he wanted to be chairman of the committee. They had a right to jump in, thats fine, but they said shes going to lose horribly. They went on to talk about President Trumps accomplishments and talked about his approval in the party. Then they said, go ahead, waste your money, to any potential challengers to the president. All this happening while larry hogan told politico just in the last week that he was really struck by the rnc shielding the president from any primary challengers. He said that hes been involved with the Republican Party for his entire life and that he had never seen anything like it. It was unprecedented. But the crowd here kind of nodding their heads in agreement with all of that. Again, interesting to look back at 2016 when the democrats faced similar critiques over kind of what they were doing behind the scenes in the primary between Hillary Clinton and bernie sanders. But here the chairwoman of the rnc coming out and saying, youre going to lose. There is no reason to even get in, essentially actively discouraging anyone from running because she says theres just no way theyre going to win, kate. It doesnt get much more clear than that, jessica. Waste your money, waste your time, youre going to lose. I think coming from the chairwoman of the rnc. But larry hogan, when he had accused the rnc of shielding trump in telling politico hes never seen anything like it, is that confirmed . Reporter well, listen, we are kind of in unprecedented times when it comes to a sitting president potentially having a primary challenge. Larry hogan, who i interviewed not too long ago, told me hes leaving that door open. Hes listening to people. He hasnt closed the door on the potential for running. He wants to know hes not on a fools errand. But what is important to note is that the president does have very high Approval Ratings within the Republican Party. So getting out of a republican primary not a problem, probably, for him with those Approval Ratings staying as they are. The question is, kate, will they stay where they are, whats coming up for the president around the bend with the mueller report, that sort of thing. A lot to come. Great to see you, jessica, from cpac. Coming up, no lunch, no signing and no deal. The president leaves vietnam emptyhanded after talks break down. So where do negotiations go now .
