Salary charges smollett has denied at least until today. Listen to the superintendent Eddie Johnson and what he said at the very beginning of his press conference. This announcement today recognizes that empire Actor Jussie Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career. Im left hanging my head and asking why. Why would anyone especially an africanamerican man use the symbolism of a noose to make false accusations . Im offended by whats happened and im also angry. Ryan young has been following the story since it first broke. He is joining me now. I have to say first and foremost, good on the Chicago Police superintendent for calling everyone out for juching to conclusions before their investigation had concluded. Can you lay out how they say this all went down . Reporter this is unreal. Its stunning. You can use a bunch of words to describe this. I thought we would get a News Conference where maybe we got some details. They decided to lay it all out for us. They wanted to make sure people understood exactly what they have been doing. They were tired of people pinning it back on them. First of all, january 29, you get the phone call from 911, 40 minutes after the alleged attack and detectives started working back. You had 12 detectives working around the clock. We think more than 1,000 hours of police work went into this and the idea they were able to track the two men down in nigeria. When they arrived back here to Chicago Ohare International airport we were told they were terrified when police were walking up to them to put them under arrest. 47 hours into an interrogation with them, they finally decided to give up the information that they needed. We now know according to them that the detectives and Police Officers that they believe Jussie Smollett paid them 3,500 to try to pull off this attack. We even have video from inside a beauty store where they went to buy items so they can be ready to go do this. Then they took an uber and a cab back home. Add on top of that the letter that was sent to the empire set a week before this attack that really looks like some kindergartener made it in a papiermache class. I think the thing that stood out to all of us was Eddie Johnson talking about crime in chicago and the fact it doesnt get covered all the time and putting it on the actor himself talking strong about how this has all twisted and turned. Listen to the superintendent talking just a moment ago. Smollett attempted to gain attention by sending a false letter that relied on racial, homophobic and political langua language. When that didnt work, smollett paid 3,500 to stage this attack and drag chicagos reputation through the mud in the process. And why . The stunt was orchestrated by smollett because he was dissatisfied with his salary. So he concocted a story about being attacked. Now, our city has problems. We know that. We have problems that have affected people from all walks of life. And we know that. But to put the National Spotlight on chicago for something that is both egregious and untrue is simply shameful. Im also concerned about what this means moving forward for hate crimes. Reporter wow. And i was told this motive a few days ago by sources. To think about him talking like that it is a strong presentat n presentation. The rank and file were happy to hear their chief and superintendent be so strong today. Thank you all for rushing in here to talk with me about this. First and foremost, joey, have you ever seen anything like this what you heard from the superintendent . He had to come out forcefully like that. Think about what happened here. The public narrative here. We are in a time of such rhetoric, such highly strong whether it relates to attacking immigrants, black facish in virginia and then inject this. It is not only obviously a mark upon the country in terms of what was occurring, but certainly a mark on chicago. Think about what they went through. This is a superintendent who has dedicated his life to service. To think about this and whenever you lay out and have detectives who have investigating, they are imperilled by the investigation. To dedicate this much time, resources and energy on something that is not legitimate is problematic. I was not surprised he would be so forceful nor will i be surprised if this is false and he is convicted that there will be jail time. You have known Jussie Smollett for years. When you heard just now what the superintendent laid out, what did you think . Well, ive known jussie for eight years. As an africanamerican and as a black gay man and someone who just watched his career development, i feel devastated by this. Its heartbreaking. Im hoping still in spite of the evidence presented that it is not true and he is still innocent until proven guilty. Because it is so hard to believe. Everything about this is hard to believe. The story from itself was hard to believe. And the reason why he would do it is hard to believe. He had no reason to do Something Like this. The idea of doing it for salary dispute doesnt make sense to me. There are a out of instances that many people have seen. I just mentioned last night there was a black gay man shot and killed here in new york city when i was at president of black coalition committee. There is a guy in los angeles who in his house two black gay men died in the past two years and he hasnt been arrested. A lot of people in my community are thinking this is not something we want and need. We want attention on the issues of black lgbtq violence and hate crimes. We want it focussed where it should be. We dont need a distraction like this. What does jussie do if this is true . I dont know how this impacts. There is a lot of argument that says this makes it harder for future cases. I think a lot of people are looking for excuses to make these things harder. People havent paid attention to these cases in the past. Regardless of whether they are celebrities, the sad thing is it took a celebrity for us to focus attention on this. The police chief said there are cases happening every day and he hopes that people start focussing on the other cases and not just on this one. Something you and i have been talking about not on tv but with each other, finding ways to bring people together. This is the opposite. The superintendent says that this is the opposite of that. I mean, this is the fall of an icon. I dont think people understand how important he has been in the black community. Empire as a show, to have him as a beloved character, i think did a great deal to knock back homophobia in the black community. The fact that he has been celebrated. You see homophobia in the black community through his eyes on the show. This is a Jackie Robinson against homophobia in the black community, an icon, a beloved icon. Now you have the fall of an icon at a time when we need icons and heroes and people to stand up. The level of betrayal if this is true is so deep. You can see it in your voice and your face. Its almost hard to get the words out because of how beloved he has been and how hurt we were when we thought he had been hurt. I want to just say that we still dont know everything. And i dont want to see us rush to judgment on this side and that side, condemn this and that. That is the thing we have talked about is that we are in the cycle where everybody has an instant complete opinion every 15 seconds. I dont want to do that. What i do want to say is that whatever he is going through to do what he did has hurt the cause against racism and the cause against homophobia if its true. If there is anyway that they can be redeemed i hope it can be. He oweathize same young black gay men, he owes them not just an apology but a lifetime of atonement. This aint nothing to play with. This aint nothing to play with. And he was playing with it, shame on him. You get to this hits on it is a setback on so many fronts. This is race. This is homophobia. This is the toxic Political Climate with him in that fake letter according to police that said that targeted Trump Supporters on the outside. I mean, it is its a lot. We havent heard his voice. We havent heard from him yet. We are in this world now where we can literally be 24 hours from now back here saying we shouldnt have rushed to judgment on this. All i want to say is it looks like a fall of an icon. If when you talk to people about this it is a lot deeper than just a hoax. This is something we havent had someone like him in our community embrace. We havent had a show like empire. For him if in fact he has abused his position, it is a tragedy beyond words in our community. I want to say real quickly i think a lot of people say how can you believe this story from the beginning . Two reasons, having known jussie i have never known him to lie. These things do happen. We had nazis marching in charlottesville and people sending pipe lines to cnn. Yesterday we have a coast guard White Nationalist who is involved in plotting a terror attack on americans. We live in difficult extreme times. When a story like this comes out unfortunately we live in a world now where these things are even possible. It makes it worse. Thats the superintendents point that youre capitalizing and preying upon something that is most unfortunate. I dont know how to say it any other way. There is never a good reason to make a false report. But for the pettiest and smallest of reasons, money, salary. When he is clearly well paid. Thats what has been said. We still dont know. Thats what the superintendent said. That is petty as petty can be if it is true. We still havent heard his explanation. I dont know that we will. From a legal perspective i dont know that we will and here is why. At the point where he was a victim it is one thing to go in and tell all in terms of what happened and where it happened and how you were the subject of this type of victimization. He is now a criminal defendant. The police asked to speak with him. He did not speak to them for good reason because anything you say can and will be used against you and the fact is even at Good Morning America interview will be used against him. And absolutely we need to pause and absolutely everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence. I can tell you on the fangts as we know them to be now, on the facts of the brothers coming forward and their corroboration because we have the surveillance of them going to the store and the receipt regarding the noose, the story in and of itself people thought were problematic in the first innocence. Plus the phone records. There is so much here that leads you to wonder, there is a lot of evidence here. I will leave it at that. The superintendent also took a moment and i would say i think i heard him a couple of times calling people out for a rush to judgment. And the way he says it he calls celebrities and people talking on tv jumping to conclusions and called out democratic president ial candidates for jumping to conclusions, as well. They did on twitter, thats for sure. What is the lesson, put both of your hats on, keith. What is the lesson here to everyone . How do democratic president ial candidates respond now . When this history first broke i reported what was reported on tmz. I didnt put a comment on it. I think that that is pretty much all you can do in a situation like this to be responsible about it and put the facts out as they have been laid out and take an opinion about it. There is no reason why people cant believe survivors of crimes and victims. I understand the impetus. It is not just the Democratic Candidates. Donald trump was also asked about this by april ryan in the oval office. He said this is the worst it gets he said i dont like the idea that we are pointing the finger at why do Democratic Candidates attack. He has tweeted about it since we have been on tv. We live in a society where there is a tendency to an empty response to everything. My fear is that some people were willing to rush to judgment one way and hopefully we dont rush to judgment the other way. We know the police has a history of i just want to hold space for grace and redemption and forgiveness. At some point this young man will have to come forward and Say Something to somebody. I believe in atonement. And i believe in space for forgiveness. And you know i say that with Trump Supporters. In this space in particular, the level of pain if what is being alleged is true, the level of pain that you have to be in to do Something Like this is significant. I want to hear his full story, too. What will cohen have to say this time . And cnn has learned that the russia investigation is wrapping up. When will special Counsel Robert Mueller finish his report . What will congress and the public eventually get to see . There is a lot going on. I want to ask you about roger stones court appearance. What is expected to happen. Roger stone will be in the hot seat, the judge calling the hearing after he posted the image of her with the cross hairs on instagram. He also called her biassed because she was an obama appointee and because she put Paul Manafort in jail before his trial. She will really try to determine whether he violated the terms of his bail. Some of those terms include that you cant intimidate witnesses or the judge. The issue will be does she decide to impose a stricter gag order on him. He currently just cant talk about the case in and around the courthouse. There is a bigger question of is it possible that she decides that he should go to jail for this . She is the judge that put Paul Manafort in prison after he was accused by prosecutors of witness tampering. There is a lot at stake for roger stone. Its great to see you guys. Shan, you have been before this judge before. You have been under and faced the gag order of this judge before. What do you think she is considering . I think she is probably going to give him a stern lecture and put him under the same gag order as the lawyers and witnesses. She went easy on him. She gave him enough rope to hang himself. I was surprised that she didnt impose something stricter. She is not going to stand for this. I dont think she will throw him in jail. I think she will give him a lecture. Because the offense didnt reach that level . Is that what you think . I think for her its a question of him being in contempt of what she told him not to talk about. I think she is going to decide if it was a threat, that decision is not up to her. U. S. Marshall service is doing a threat assessment. The gag order may turn out being the least ofrt problems if he gets charged with this. It is always something with him. How do you think this today impacts the case Going Forward . Well, it will depend on what the judge does today. I agree that she is not likely to put him in prison. The judge is the Authority Figure in the courtroom because she needs to control the proceedings if this goes to trial and needs to make sure that the jury listens to her instructions on the law. This is part of the her saying i am in charge here and you have to respect me in the courtroom because the jury has to respect me and listen to me. I think we will see him now more careful about the comments he made. He probably wont be able to make as many comments. Hopefully we will see tamping down of the rhetoric Going Forward. The Mueller Probe. The end is near. The Mueller Probe is wrapping up. The focus very quickly turns to the incoming attorney general and what he will do about the eventual report. I think the end is the new beginning because there will be a lot of fights about the access report. I think mueller will hand in a report to his requirements. Were there interferences with his investigation. Barr is going to bury it. He will sanitize it and do a summary, whatever his motivations may be it is hard to attack him because he can stand behind the idea of not dispar disparaging people. We will never see the raw material of the report. There will be tons of report with congress subpoenaing documents and witnesses because congress has a Different Task here. Their fact finding let the sun light in for the criminal investigation. It is very narrow and not meant to be transparent. It is meant to be opaque. I think the ball is really in congresss court now. What can congress eventually do is a separate thing. We know members will fight to get the full report. Republican and democratic. I remember Chuck Grassley saying the american taxpayer paid for the report and they should see the darn thing. I thought that was a fascinating comment. What do you think congress can do . These special counsel regs are new. They werent in place the last time we had a big independent counsel. Well have to see how the courts interpret them. They are fairly vague and unclear. I think congress will issue subpoenas. I think congress will want to bring the fights to the courts and see how the courts tremt interpret the regulations. I dont see justification for with holding the facts of the Mueller Probe and the legal conclusions from congress as long as it is not public. I think they will win a lot of battles if they actually go forward with them and i think that they will because of the pressure from the public about wanting to see what is there. The list also containing the names of several journ lrss from cnn and msnbc. Federal agents say they found 15 firearms in his maryland apartment. President trumps director of National Intelligence calls it a threat to National Security dan coats saying the United States will probably have to manage the impact of global Human Security challenges such as threats to public health, historic levels of human displacement, assaults on religious freedom and negative effects of environmental degradation and Climate Change. With that in mind, the Washington Post is now reporting that the Trump Administration is putting together a panel to look into the National Security implications of that threat of Climate Change and internal documents give a window into how seriously they seem to be taking the threat. The man spear heading the committee is William Happer known to deny Climate Change as a real thing going so far as to say this about Carbon Dioxide. The demonization of Carbon Dioxide is like demonization of poor jews under hitler. Carbon dioxide is a benefit to the the world and so were the jews. It is Carbon Dioxide that is getting a bad rap. The Green New Deal is big on goals when it comes to Climate Change, light on details and movement to tackle Climate Change. What is your reaction to this Washington Post report . Its just one more sign that this administration doesnt take the threat of Climate Change seriously. You know, there was a federally mandated study, a pretty large one that was scheduled to come out in december. The Trump Administration released it the friday of thanksgiving weekend black friday because they wanted to release it when people werent paying attention. Here is what the study shoed, a ten percent projukted drop in our nations gdp by the end of the century if we dont deal with Climate Change and 50 billion increase in energy costs by the year 2050. Those were two of the catastrophic conclusions of this report. So the administration really doesnt need yet one more study or one more group to be put together to recognize what 97 of climate scientists have concluded that Climate Change is real and our window of opportunity to deal with this is closing. This is still as far as we know a proposed president ial committee and nothing has been announced. If this man wasnt the head of it, would you support the idea behind the white house putting together a group of experts to look at the National Security implications of Climate Change . If its a group of genuine experts that would then be tasked with coming up with a concrete action plan on what exactly we are going to do to address Climate Change. Over the last two years the only time we hear about Climate Change from President Trump is him mocking the concept. The actions that we have seen from this administration have been hostile toward addressing Climate Change. He pulled this out of what was really a major achievement of the Obama Administration leaving almost 200 nations around the globe to sign the paris accords. Unfortunately, now, the United States is outside of that treaty. So based on the first two years of the Trump Administration, i really dont have confidence that this is something that the president takes seriously. I want to ask about the Green New Deal for a second. You are co chair of the blue collar caucus which was formed to fight for american workers. Some unions are skeptical in the support of the Green New Deal. I was looking at some of the statements. One of the unions that is in your district is the National Union of north america and said we will never settle for Just Transition language to the job losses that will surely come from some of the policies in the resolution. I mean, what do you say to them . I am proud to be supported by the laborers and proud to support them in return. One of the things that i see as a great Economic Opportunity for addressing Climate Change is the retrofitting of buildings. For example, there are right now Public Private partnerships on a smaller scale. What they do is they fund the retrofitting of older buildings, bring them up to code and make them Energy Efficient and then the savings from the energy c t costs is actually what funds the future projects. Is this Just Transition language . I understand their concern. First we have to acknowledge that Climate Change is real and is a threat. Second, we have to make sure that the workers, our Blue Collar Workers are those who will benefit from changing to a more Energy Efficient economy. I believe that that can be done. I think it is a false choice that people presented that we either have to address our environmental challenges on the one hand or improve our economy and we cant do both. I think that is false thinking. In many ways this can be a great Economic Opportunity especially for Blue Collar Workers and blue collar jobs here in america. Do you think whoever the eventual democratic nominee is, do you think they should have to throw their support behind the Green New Deal . Well, what i think will likely happen and right now the last time i checked there were approximately 200 democrats running for president , i dont know who our nominee is going to be, but i have a strong suspicion that whoever he or she may be will be someone who is 100 committed and has an actual concrete plan toward addressing Climate Change. It has to be real. It has to be something that would have teeth to it and it cant be something that ignores our legitimate economic concerns. Again, too many people on the other side of this issue are creating a false choice simply because they oppose doing anything to address Climate Change. I havent looked at twitter in the last five minutes because a few more people joined the race if we are at 200 people at this point. An emotional day on the stand as the son of a republican congressional candidate testifies that he warned his dad that Election Fraud could happen during his campaign because of who he could be hiring.
