Most important case in the office i would be frustrated, too. Thats how i read that is senator sessions, why didnt you tell me this before i picked you . There are lots of really good lawyers in the country. He could have picked someone else. That is interesting. You what is even more interesting, the fact that trump was quoting trey gowdy here. The same trey gowdy who just hours earlier debunked the president s Conspiracy Theory du jour, the unproven claim that the fbi under president obama had mrabplanted an informant to as a spy. Here is trey gowdy. I am more convinced that the fbi did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got and that it has nothing to do with donald trump. Keep in mind, gowdy isnt just some congressman spouting off on this issue. As House Oversight chairman he was at last weeks classified Justice Department briefing on this very issue. Cnns Kaitlan Collins and Shimon Prokupecz are here. Lets start at the white house. What are you hearing from trumps latest attack on his attorney general . Reporter this is just a repeat of what the president has said before, that he wishes that hed picked someone else as his attorney because of Jeff Sessions decision to recuse himself from overseeing the russia investigation, something that has long plagued the president and something that he has never gotten over in this relationship and this goes back to trey gowdys comment where he sympathized with the president and he understood his frustration and trey gowdy was asked about the New York Times report that described in great detail a meeting last march after hed made the decision to recuse himself after that he didnt disclose hed met with officials. Right after Jeff Sessions had recused himself, he flew down to palm beach after the president had not been taking his calls and thinking he would be discussing immigration and when he got down there it was a different story. The president was angry, berated him and told him he needed to reverse the decision so he could go back and be in charge of the russia investigation and of course, obviously, as weve seen over the past year, Jeff Sessions said he could not do that and did not make the decision and that was the beginning of the end between this relationship that was once a very good relationship, and very solid between the president and his attorney general. Now its hard to overstate just how broken their relationship is, kate. The two of them do not talk on the phone. When theyre in the same room for an event together, they barely interact and things are very broken between the two of them and trump complains about Jeff Sessions regularly and as it did today, for comes out to the public eye. The special counsel is looking into this request. That sessions refused his recusal in march 2017. What do we know about that . This is one of the first indications and the earliest indications that the president was unhappy about Jeff Sessions recusal, but its sort of an ongoing issue and the special counsel is looking at other conversations he had with Jeff Sessions including some of the tweets and some of the statements hes made publicly to us in the media and that is all part of the special counsels investigation and it also shows us and indicates to us that its not just the obstruction does not just retlilate to what he d in terms of firing the former fbi director and it extends into his interaction and what he was trying to get Jeff Sessions to do and that is to take charge of this investigation after Jeff Sessions recused himself and keep in mind that Jeff Sessions recused himself with the advice of career prosecutors and career attorneys at the department of justice. This wasnt a decision that he went ahead and made on his own. Jeff sessions said as much that he consulted career lawyers at the department of justice. Getting back to the Conspiracy Theory du jure, hes confirming what fbi sources have been telling you about the spy Conspiracy Theory all along. Right. This is significant in the sense of who trey gouwdy is. Hes a republican, right . We have republicans who are arguing this for the president , this Conspiracy Theory saying there was a spy planted in the campaign by the fbi and by the department of justice and what you have here is trey goud whoa has seen this intelence and and been briefed by the fbi and in a classified setting and has been told what they were doing and what their investigation involved and clearly, here, taking the position that we have talked to at the fbi and the Intelligence Community and other places so that the idea that there was some spy planted in the campaign by anyone at the department of justis and people at the fbi is just ludicrous and its important to think about this for the fbi and the people who are doing this work and continuing to do this investigation that they have people like trey gowdy that come out and support them because there is a larger investigation that we dont focus and that is still a very active and ongoing invest gagd by Robert Mueller and the fbi. Shimon, kaitlan. Good to see you guys, thank you. Joining us to discuss this more, former senior analyst, and david chalian. We know that trump, talking first of all sessions, we know trump was not happy that Jeff Sessions recused himself from the russia investigation. Hed said that to the New York Times, but this morning he said it in the most direct way yet that he wishes hed picked someone else. I mean, he could fire him. Why is he restarting this public shaming . Right. He does serve at the president s pleasure and the president seems displeased. Its just on this one issue and its a dominant issue and one that the president is clearly obsessed with. This issue of recusing himself and not overseeing this russia probe and on nearly every other issue, Jeff Sessions is executing Donald Trumps agenda the way he wants whether its on immigration or the array of other issues that come before him at the Justice Department and so it doesnt i would imagine if that was not the case Jeff Sessions would no longer be here, but he is accomplishing those other agenda items. And chen, according to the New York Times trump was asking sessions to unrecuse himself at this march about this march 17 confrontation and all of this is being investigated by bob mueller. It seems that looking into obstruction, do you see obstruction . Potentially. I think that him having sessions come down there after the fact to berate him about that, that im sure is going to raise the interest level of muellers team and to follow up on what david was saying its important to analyze that the a. G. Has more than one case. The more that the president focusses on one case as reasons to wanting to unrecuse himself contrary to the advice of the regulations and career prosecutors the more suspicious that begins to look. Shan, Rudy Giuliani say, unrecused doesnt say bury the investigation. It says on the face of it, take responsibility for it and handle it correctly. Does giuliani have a point . He has a point although it doesnt seem applicable to these circumstances. The message does seem to be i want you to stick around and change your mind because i want you to bury the investigation. I think here are the details would be really important. I think thats why you see so many of the questions that mueller wants to ask go to the president s state of mind saying that hey, would you reconsider youre the best man for the job, im comfortable with you is one thing and saying what the heck are you doing . I want you to put the cqaa cabo this. I am not making a judgement here, if you are innocent where do you need a loyalist overseeing the investigation . It is a very valid question. What is the president afraid of about an independent investigation . Why does a loyalist need to be in place for this president to feel that this investigation is fair . That is a question that should be posed to the president , posed to the white house because it just doesnt make sense. It requires more explanation there. And david, the other part of this that we were talking about with shimon is a key republican, the republican chair of the House OversightCommittee Trey Gowdy was one of the lawmakers that was pushing for more information about the fbis investigation into the Trump Campaign and the russia investigation. He now says about the president s unproven claim there is a spy planted in his campaign that theres nothing there there, but then you have this from last night from the president. Listen. So how do you like the fact they had people infiltrating our campaign . Can you imagine . Can you imagine . Can you imagine . People infiltrating our campaign. Is there anybody in this big, beautiful arena right now that is infiltrating our campaign . Would you please raise your hand . So in his typical flair the president is taking gowdys word when it comes to Jeff Sessions recusal because he used it in his tweet. How can he avoid not listening to trey goud owe this issue that he went after last night. Youre asking how the president could not be a hypocrite on this . I dont know how to answer that. Hes cherry picking gowdys comments that suit his Political Goals of the moment. Hes going to have trey gowdy. Trey gowdy will not move up his position and i know what i saw. Theyre gowdy blew the entire basis claim and a spy embedded in the Trump Campaign and he blew that to smithereens and not only is it going to be difficult for the president to deal with that, but the rightwing Media Echo Chamber and fox news, this is devin nunes and other members of congress that pushed this, kate, trey gowdy is a wellrespected conservative republican and former prosecutor and he blew that case to smithereens by saying that and that becomes a messaging problem and to your earlier point and trey gowdy remembers that two months ago said on television if youre innocent, act like it. So hes been offering advice to this president on this case through the television airwaves, but the president doesnt seem to be taking it. Not yet. Lets see if the president does on this one. S hs shan, with trey gowdy saying this and he will continue, he will continue saying this and continue talking about what he saw in that classified briefing and that the president should not be worried about it and he should be more than fine with it and he should be happy that the fbi have been conducting themselves in an appropriate manner . Does someone owe the fbi an apology now . I dont know if anybody in the fbi cares one way or the other, but does the president need to Say Something about this . I think youre right. I think the fbi does not care one way or the other and theyll push forward. It would be a very smart, strategic move for the president to express some confidence in the fbi if as trey gowdy seems to be signalling that perhaps there will not be a smoking gun leading to the president. He may want to be on the right side of the report that comes out that hes actually not guilty of Something Like obstruction and hes missing the point that you want to shore up your institutional credibility for your Fbi Department and for your Justice Department and certainly, hes missing one of the better characteristics of sessions which is by recusing himself in this matter, he looks as though hes less political than he actually is, which is a good appearance you want in your attorney general. Its typically what youre going for. Shan, david, thanks, guys. Coming up, it was the ambien. While you were sleeping Roseanne Barr was tweeting and tweeting and tweeting. Dozens of tweets and retweets despite her promise to quit twitter she did anything but after abc canceled her hit sitcom over her racist tweet. Barr was both apologetic and also placing blame, blaming a sleep medication with this tweet. It was 2 00 in the morning and i was am bi18 tweeting and it was memorial day, too. I went too far and do not want to defend it, it was egregious, indefensible. I made a mistake, i wish i hadnt, but dont defend it, please. She later deleted the apology and barr also had this explanation. I honestly thought she was jewish and persian, ignorant of me for sure, but i did. Brian stelter, what do you make of roseannes response. She is promoting more conspiracy theories and tweeting a bunch of random and inappropriate stuff, by blaming ambien even, shes just affirming abcs decision. There is criticism for abc by canceling the show and its been drowned out and this has been an example of Corporate America standing up trying to be on the right side of history. The view inside has been that roseanne kept embarrassing himself for months by posting inappropriate stuff and tuesday was the most example yet and there was no way to come back from this, this is unsurvivable for her and shes back on twitter and continuing to talk about her show and continuing to apologize in one breath and says shes the victim in another breath. Abc meanwhile, has this giant hole to fill in their schedule and theyre giving up their highest rated new show and there is chatter about some version of roseanne without roseanne. Maybe it would be called the connors and maybe there is a way to kill off her character ask keep the rest of the show. To be clear, abc is not saying thats happening. Its far too soon for any news on that front, but it is starting to be talked about. Valerie jarrett, the target of roseannes racist tweet is also speaking out. Let her have her say. What is she saying . She is saying she is fine and she appreciates peoples interest and support and she happened to be speaking at a previously scheduled town hall and she said it has to be turned into a teachable moment. The tone does start at the top and we have to look up to the president and feel as though he reflects the values of our country and i feel every individual citizen has a responsibility, too. Its our government is only going to be as good as we make it be. Lets be honest, roseanne probably wouldnt be on the air were it not for President Trump. Abc was trying to appeal to a heartland audience that feels its not represented by hollywood. At the same time this cancellation wouldnt be nearly as big a deal were it not for the trump aid, and intolerance and hate is on the rise. Everyone is wondering whether trump will say anything about the show. His silence might say a lot as well already. Good to see you. Thank you. Joining me now is the republican commentator and former nominee for governor of new york and charles blow, an opinion columnist, of course, for the New York Times, great to see you. Charles, shes sorry and its ambien. Does it make sense . Ambien says that racism is not a side effect of its drug. Literally the maker of ambien tweeted that out. Yeah. Even if that were a believable rush, it actually makes it worse because it does suggest that this thing is embedded in her subconscious and the only reason not coming out is because shes awake and she can control it, but that is her core belief, but the bigger issue here is that this is one of those subjects that is an across the line subject. It is an untouchable subject because this the race question in america was for centuries not a question of race at all. It was a species question, right . That actual scientists and doctors went to Great Lengths to try to prove that black people were, in fact, a subseepecies closer to ape and monkey and you had to do that in order to to deliver the amount of massive suffering and loss of life that slavery and the subsequent laws that came out of that, after that produced. So many people died just marching to the coast of africa before they got on the ship. A million died during the middle of passage. Some shot overboard, jumping overboard because they were driven crazy by the fact that they were trapped. Sharks turned to trail those boats because there was so much flesh going over those boats and you had to have some sort of this. Thats the only way you can even justify that system existing in this country for as long as it did and that idea for the it existed for a very, very long time. You had people put into human zoos right here in new york city. The bronx zoo, 1906, had a black man on display at the zoo. People coming and ogling him just like the other animals at the zoo. This is what that sort of thing, that comparison did. Thats 40 years after slavery was over. Thats a decade after after booker t. Washington delivers the atlanta compromise speech, that is three years after w. B. Dubois publishes the souls of black folk and it is still happening and we can still have a major zoo in the most populated city in this country, a black man on display in a cage at a zoo. This is so much more than a tweet. I mean, i can see it in your face. Forget the words that youre giving right here. It is so much more than a tweet, and then rob, how can you had said yesterday its indefensible what she did, what she said and what do you say to the people that have been rushing to her defense . No. I dont think theyre rushing to her defense just like i was saying last night in that as outraged as charles just was and is and should be and i am at what she did, when others have said the same kind of thing or written the same thing or used the n word, was there outrage, but it was pretty quick and it wasnt the same kind of response from that same network, by the way. Paula dean who was in dancing with the stars after using the n word and joy behar who was awful to half the country. She even said that republicans turn her off. So does abc think that thats a good response . As bad as it was and it was terrible should we cut off her thumb . Should she be given a Second Chance . Look, thats a corporate decision that abc made, but where is where is the balance in the response. But youre not trying to say because it was because someone else because they made a bad decision, someone made a bad decision before because someone else did it its okay here. Youre not saying its okay. No, its not okay, but they also knew what they were getting. This isnt the first time roseanne has done something terrible. Just the National Anthem to many, many people. Shes a lunatic and shes a nut and they brought her back for a reason because she also is entertaining as many others. Let me ask you this. The fact that the president has not said anything. We talked about this last night and it was before he had a speech and his rally. He didnt say anything. Does that speak volumes . Look, i think, it would be very easy for the white house to just Say Something and get it over with. So were not talking for two or three days about what the president is or is not saying and when he does something it will not be enough or too much and its going to be neverending, but this is an easy one and i think he should say or the white house should say its reprehensible. Charles, considering his track record and how he handles race in america, do you even hear from him . I think the office of the president because he has attached himself to her specifically, right, and to that show publicly, they should the office of the president should respond in some sort of way, right . Would any contrition on him from that issue and not being contrite about his own statements be valuable in any way . I dont think so. Would i would i wait that as being a moral moment for the white house . I wouldnt personally because he has never, to my knowledge, apologized for any of the racially insensitive things that he himself has said. This is a what is being con flighted here is that people are holding up a mirror and saying if you voted for trump this is really what you are and thats completely wrong. Its not who i am. Its not who 99 of those who voted for trump for specific reasons and maybe against hillary. I think any person should say no one should be taking any group of people and saying you all believe one thing. Of course. Thats kind of whats happening here and what i am saying and what i want to be known is okay, so when alec baldwin screams dont bring more people into it. No, because the reaction from nbc and others was okay, bad, but hey, come back on snl because youre funny. I find that incredibly problematic. I think this line of reasoning, that says i can have the policies without the poison is a lie. If you alec baldwin is a hes talking about donald trump. Donald trump and people keep trying to make this argument to me that i can support him. I can vote for him and i can detach myself from his hatred and his White Supremacy and you cannot. It is impossible to do. Others would say and the polls showed this that Race Relations in america were the worst after obama left. We can go on and on about that. Thats ridiculous. Thats true. We are going to end on the fact that we believe polls and we dont believe polls when they dont mack our point. This discussion is not over and i will continue this conversation at the break. Thank you so much. Thank you. Coming up, well take you to hawaii. Evacuate or face an uncertain fate. First responders will not come to the rescue if official evacuation orders are ignored. Thats the new warning from the Hawaii County mayor to residents who refuse to listen to evacuation orders near the kilauea volcano. The mayor saying from now on First Responders will no longer go door to door to rescue people who refuse to leave certain areas. It has been 27 days since the eruptions starting spewing lava. The lava that continues to flow has destroyed at least 70 homes and is still threatening a major power plant. Hundreds have forced to emergency shelters and 4,000 acres is relatively small it is having an impact on tourism. The Hawaii Visitors Bureau say Hotel Bookings are down 50 from may to july. Joining me now to discuss all of this is the president and ceo of the hawaii tourism authority. Thank you for coming in. I appreciate it. Good morning. Thank you very much for having me. Good morning. What do you want people to know about hawaii right now . What i want to do is clear up some of the misconceptions going on right now. The volcanic activity is happening in a small area of puna on the island of hawaii. I think when people see the island of hawaii they think the state of hawaii. That area is ten square miles with a lot of activity right now. On the island theres 4,028 square miles and hilo is 20 miles and kauai are 100 miles away and then you take maui, oahu, and lanai and theyre trying to clear up some of the misconceptions and tell people that hawaii is open for business. While it is open for business because what youre saying is misconceptions out there. How hard of a hit is hawaii taking so far in terms of tourism . Im hearing on the big island that arrivals are up 26 as of may 20th and thats been very, visit positive, but im hearing the booking pace for the future months has slowed down and that is a concern for us and we will address that. The booking pace is the one hearing reviews from the hotel and thats of a concern on the big island. How do you convince people to come visit when especially when youre talking about the big island when you dont know when this crisis going to end . Well, you know, the volcanic activity has been going for 35 years on the island of hawaii and right now it is having her way over there and everybody respects that, and its something that can end tomorrow or go on for a few more months maybe. So, but we do want to tell people that is in that small area, ten square miles of an island thats 4,028 square miles, so if you stay out of the evacuated area youre safe. Youre safe. Real quick. Hawaii is in a position that many other states have been in, right . Facing natural disasters and the hit on tourism after the fact. You take puerto rico as an example and the florida keys. How do you balance the fact that you need attention on the crisis because you need attention on it and youre trying to not scare away tourism dollars. You know, i think the safety and the welfare of our residents and visitors are always a top priority and we have our share and its finding that balance, but it always is a top, top priority for us is making sure that our residents and visitors are always safe. Thank you very much for coming in. I appreciate it. Thank you very much for having me. Aloha. Thank you. Coming up, they touted her ratings and called her with congratulations about those very ratings and now President Trump is speaking out about fired comedian Roseanne Barr. President trump now breaking his silence on the cancellation of Roseanne Barrs show after she went on an on what she says is an ambieninfused racist tweet storm. Trump tweeted moments ago this. Bob iger called Valerie Jarrett that, quote, abc does not tolerate comments like those made by Roseanne Barr, gee, says the president. He never called president donald j. Trump for the horrible statements made and said about me on abc. Maybe i just didnt get the call. Yeah. Joining me right now Chris Cillizza editoratlarge, and cnn contributor and host of entertainment tonight on cbs. Chris, what should we make of Donald Trumps first initial response after so many people have said where is the president on this . This is where he is. Me, me, me, me, me, me, me. Thats where he is. I mean, its not different than most things. Lets remember this is a president who on memorial day tweet made it about his ability to lower the unemployment rate. We shouldnt be terribly surprised. I would have predicted that donald trump would go after the socalled Fake News Media in a tweet, but he went in what is a sort of traditional direction for him to make it about himself. Im not totally sure kate is referring to in terms of his being attacked on abc. Always looking at the possibility with donald trump that the attacks dont exist. They might, but they also might not, but this is donald trump making about him. Remember, he has a persecution complex. He has a victim complex. He views himself always as on the outside looking in while elites laugh at him not being allowed in. This is more of the same. Michelle, why on earth here would the president want to make this about him . Lord, if i had the answer to that, kate, i could retire right now. Thats the 64 million question. I think like chris said, a lot of things come back to him when hes talking about them, and i think that he does feel like hes been maligned in several instances on abc. I mean, listen, if were being honest, there are some shows the ladies of the view, they go in on a daily basis on him and lately people have been bringing up Keith Olbermann who is on espn which is disney owned and he is not a fan of the president. Thats probably what hes talking about, but i also think, you know, one of roseannes last tweets on her tweet tirade today was i feel bad for the president because he has to go through this every day. So who knows . He could be drawing from that and saying, well, you know, roseanne said that she feels bad for me. Im treated badly. So there you go. Michelle, is this going to be in any way satisfying a initial response from the president of the United States . I hope folks are able to see, what charles laid out in a way that only he can. That this was way more than a tweet. Oh, my gosh. Absolutely. Its emblematic of what were dealing with in this country right now. The problem of race in america is more pervasive than i think its been in a very long time and you were talking about the fact i wasnt in the room with you and charles, but you were talking about how you could see the pain on his face. I could hear it when i was listening to that. I know it. I feel it. I felt it. I live it. I am a person of color in this country and just because im on television does not mean that i am, you know, away from what happens every day in life and ive had the instances myself and i get it. It is a problem and it is something that we do have to address, the normalization of racism and issues of race in this country and its a problem and weve seen it play out just with people when ive been looking at twitter coming to roseannes defense. I was surprised at how many people were coming to her defense saying we stand with you. We support you. You were just joking and that was not a joke in any way, shape or form and she knows it. Chris, in a raw, political sense was this donald trump somehow threading some strange needle of not saying saying a lot of words, but not passing judgment on roseanne bar . Its an interesting thing. Theres roughly a 0 chance donald trump will condemn Roseanne Barr. Its not what he does. Thats not what he does. So given our options there which is to fully defend who would do Something Else, this is in the Something Else category. This is sort of using that situation in which her show was canceled by bob iger, the head of abc to talk about himself. Is it the sort of moral leadership that past president s have at least sought to exhibit not only successfully, but sought to exhibit . No, but after charlottesville and after roy moore and after rob porter, i dont think that we should be is up prized thsur president will use that office to exhibit moral leadership and do things for the we rather than the me. Let me read you the tweet again. Lets make sure everyone gets the tweet because a lot of folks have been waiting to see what the president would say about this in this moment and heres what the president said. Bob ierg of abc called Valerie Jarrett to tell her abc does not tolerate comments like those made by Roseanne Barr. Gee, he never called president donald j. Trump to apologize for the horrible statements made and said about me on abc. Maybe i just didnt get the call . He just referred to himself in the third person. That is the least surprising thing. Let kate bolduan tell you right now. Thanks, guys. Chris cillizza stamp of approval. Coming up for us, a crucial day in court for trump attorney Donald Trumps personal attorney, a judge issued a new deadline for the documents seized from cohens home. As governor, you can trust me to do whats right because i always have. Hearing from President Trumps personal Attorney Michael Cohen just wrapped up regarding the review of over 1 million documents seized from three of cohens phones. So what happened . Reporter yeah, those are just the items received from three phones, kate. There are a trove of other items that the special master is also looking at, as well as cohens lawyers. So the special master has already sent over to the government more than a million pieces of documents from those phones. In addition, other items have been turned over to the government. More than 200 have been considered attorneyclient privilege and the government will not get their eyes on that. On cohens side, they said theyve gone through about a third of the amount of documents that they consider attorneyclient privilege. Today, the judge said you have until june 15th to make those determinations, or else all those documents will be handed over to the government and the government will filter through and decide whats attorneyclient privilege. This has to do with all those documents seized in the fbi raid of Michael Cohens home and office, and his hotel room. And its just the next step in this process. But yeah, thats a staggering number. A million just from the phones, and the special master says she still has more to look for. Shes moving this right along. What can you tell us about Stormy Daniels attorney, Michael Avenatti and his request for the documents . Reporter hes wanted a seat at the table and we knew he would be in court to plead his case why he should have a seat at the table. And the judge said listen, im not going to make a decision on that. But she also made some strong remarks to him that basically said if you want a seat at the table in the future, you need to stop with the publicity tour. Weve seen Michael Avenatti on the news, talking about Michael Cohen and his attorneys and the president. And the judge ordered hey, stop that for now if you want a seat at this table. All right. Great to see you, brynn. A live look right now at the markets. A quick check, the dow rebounding after yesterdays big drop due to the Political Drama playing out in europe. Of course, also President Trumps announcement on tariffs being slapped on china. Maggie, what are you seeing, are the markets just shrugging this off . Reporter this is a Market Driven by headlines. Today, the headlines are about Roseanne Barr. So thats letting investors focus on fundamentals. We had a couple of good earnings, but this is still a very volatile market. Next hour, well catch up with rick reeder, hes going to help us figure out how to protect our money. We have to get those kids through college. You absolutely do. What else do you have on the show today . Reporter were going to get around to some of those movers. I talked about disneys whoas, we have jobs coming up, well talk about that. And get all the latest. What is the expectation on jobs, the next report . The things that have been trending. Reporter its the one thing the president can tout. The jobs picture is good. Well see if the wages catch up. So good news for economy, we think. But watch out, in this environment, good news can be bad news if it means the feds will raise interest rates. So we could see a counterintuitive reaction. Somebody in the middle will be best for everyone around. But the jobs picture is good, making the u. S. Look really attractive, especially when you look at the international concerns. Thanks, maggie.
