What does the committee, lay out for me, manu, want to see, and why wont the white house give it to them . Reporter well, kate, the House Oversight committee on march 22nd sent a letter to reince priebus, the white house chief of staff, asking for a range of records related to Michael Flynn, specifically about payments that he received from russianbacked entities, including Rt Television network, which is of course the kremlinbacked television network. The question, ultimately, whether or not he accurately and legally disclosed some of these payments while requesting security clearances to serve as Donald Trumps National Security adviser. Now, in a letter sent to the committee, the white house does not provide that information. In fact, it rejects the House Oversight committees request, saying that the records before january 20th that the committee did want would not the white house would not be in possession of those records. And anything after january 20th, well, the white house says that that is not relevant to the committees investigation and said that, of course, he may have had contacts with foreign officials, but they say why is that relevant to an investigation regarding payments that he may have received from 2015 and 2016 and whether or not those were legally disclosed, this coming from Top White House adviser mark short to the committee. Now, the committee right now, kate, is reviewing documents related to Michael Flynn, classified documents that came from a different agency, the Defense Intelligence agency and we expect to hear momentarily from Elijah Cummings, the top democrat on the committee, and chairman of the committee, jason chaffetz. Expect there probably to be some concerns about the lack of responsiveness from the white house. Well hear whether or not they have learned if Michael Flynn did fail to report any of this information as legally required on these documents, just part of one of several investigations about russia, russia meddling and those Trump Campaign ties to russia that are happening here on capitol hill, kate. All right, manu. Thanks so much. Were keeping an eye. The Top Republican and top democrat on that House Oversight committee, they will be coming to the microphone. We will bring that to you when it happens. Manus there for us. Thank you so much, manu. This is happening at the same time, the president s daughter facing a rough reception during her First Official overseas trip as a white house adviser. Ivanka trump was asked about her role and her fathers treatment of women during a summit in germany. She was invited there by the german chancellor, Angela Merkel. Here is the moment that brought about a reaction from the crowd as ivanka defended her father. Sadly, the United States is one of the only countries in the world, the only developed country in the world that doesnt have a pay policy for the benefit of families, so that is something im very, very proud of my fathers advocacy, long before he came to the presidency, the campaign and the primaries. Hes been a tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive. And the new reality of you hear the reaction from the audience. I certainly heard the criticism from the media, and it has been perpetuated, but i know from personal experience that i think the thousands of women who have worked with and for my father for decades when he was in the private sector are a testament to his belief and solid conviction in the potential of women and their ability to do the job as well as any man. All right, so i want to bring in right now, cnn White House Reporter kate bennett and atika shubert, Cnn Senior International correspondent, both joining me now from berlin. Guys, thank you so much for being here. So, kate, youve been following ivanka on this trip. How did this all play out . What all went on in that room, in that summit . So, it was a fairly long panel, and it covered a wide range of topics, mainly focusing on women and the economy, closing the pay gap, entrepreneurship, so all the topics were relevant and what we anticipated. However, there was a moment, as we just saw, when ivanka trump was talking about her father and his policy about families, where the audience did get a little bit riled up a bit, and she had to address that. But ill tell you, kate, right off the bat during this panel, the moderator wanted to know and said that the country, the germans wanted to know, who is ivanka trump and what exactly is her role in her fathers administration. Well, certainly not the latter. And i am rather unfamiliar with this role as well, as it is quite new to me. It has been a little under 100 days, but it has just been a remarkable and incredible journey. So, this is very early for me. Im listening, im learning, im defining the ways in which i think that ill be able to have impact. Reporter now, also, kate, i will say that afterwards in an offcamera gaggle, ivanka trump said it was fine, she handled it, shes used to it, its just politics. She can continue on and let it roll off her back. All right, so atika, youve been on the ground ahead of this visit. I mean, are you surprised by the kind of rough reaction from the audience there . Reporter im not too surprised. I mean, look, we had heard there might even be protests when she came. Those protests did not appear, but she was speaking to an audience that has been very skeptical, especially seeing the kind of remarks that were made by President Trump when he was campaigning. And the reaction really came when she said that her father was a champion of womens issues, and thats when we heard the murmuring and hissing. But having said that, for most of the panel, the audience was respectful, and she really held her own with a very intimidating and formidable panel of women. She was seated next to christine lagarde, head of the imf, Angela Merkel was there, arguably the most powerful woman in the world. And you know, she showed she did her homework and that she was passionate about these issues of womens empowerment and entrepreneurship. And i think thats what mattered perhaps most to the audience. Yeah, maybe. Kate, who was in the audience, kate . I mean, i assume this was an inviteonly type of event. Reporter yeah, absolutely. The w20 summit featured many, many Business Leaders from across the globe, women who are interested in sort of furthering the economic success of women and having a global impact. Afterwards, ivanka trump did speak to the private in her little offcamera gaggle, saying they are going to hopefully establish a fund, but the world bank will be involved, and again, push these issues forward. As weve heard from ivanka since the beginning of her fathers administration, these womens issues are really the crux of why shes there, why her father sort of nominated her to be the voice and be his emissary on these issues on a global stage, so shes following through essentially on what she has claimed to be so far her most passionate absolutely. Im going to cut you off and head back to washington. Jason chaffetz and Elijah Cummings of the House Oversight Committee Just looking at documents for the first time regarding Michael Flynn, the fired National Security adviser. Lets listen. The engagement with them. It does not appear to us that that was ever sought, nor did he ever get that permission. We will jointly be doing a letter for a final determination on that. That will need to come from the department of army as well as the Inspector General at the department of defense. And if that money was received by general flynn, and we believe that it was, that money needs to be recovered. That final determination, again, will have to come from the department of the army as well as the department of defense, but as a former military officer, you simply cannot take money from russia, turkey, or anybody else, and it appears as if he did take that money. It was inappropriate. And there are repercussions for the violation of law. Good morning. Id just like to read a very short statement. I want to be very careful because we are coming out of a classified briefing. First, we have just come from this briefing with the Defense Intelligence agency. The order of documents was to review relating to general flynn. As you know, general flynn previously led and also served as a National Security adviser until he was fired by President Trump. Right now we cannot discuss the contents of the documents that we just saw because they are indeed classified, but we can say this, they are extremely troubling. We have concerns. And i believe these documents should be declassified to the fullest extent possible without compromising sources and methods. I want to thank chairman chaffetz, who joined our request for these documents, and i believe he feels the same, that the American People should be able to see these documents for themselves. Second, weve been trying for several months to obtain general flynns security clearance information to determine whether he reported payments he received for his trip to russia in 2015 when he dined with the russian president. We have now obtained general flynns application to renew his security clearance in january 2016. This form is called an sf86. General flynn filed his fx86 about a month after he traveled to moscow. However, there is no evidence, as the chairman said, anywhere in these documents that reported the funds he received for this trip. There is also no evidence that he sought permission to obtain these funds from a foreign source. This is a major problem. As the sf86 explains and i quote all questions on this form must be answered completely and truthfully. It also says this and let me quote directly the United States criminal code title 18 section 1001 provides that knowingly falsifying or concealing a material fact is a felony, which may result in fin fines and five years imprisonment. Based on these documents, i believe the Oversight Committee should be holding a hearing with general flynn. Im seeing the chairman, and we talked briefly about this, and it seems that this is perhaps a purview of the intelligence, and i understand this. But we have to have the opportunity to ask general flynn directly why he concealed these foreign payments from the defense department. Finally, let me say this. As part of our investigation, chairman chaffetz and i sent a bipartisan request to mr. Priebus, the white house chief of staff, requesting a wide range of documents, including any and i quote referring or relating to Lieutenant General flynns contacts with foreign nationals. Despite all of these very troubling developments, last wednesday, on april 19th, we received a response from the white house refusing to provide any of the documents we requests. So, we received no internal documents relating to what general flynn reported to the white house when they vetted him to become National Security adviser, and we received no documents relating to his termination as National Security adviser for concealing his discussion with the russian ambassador. In short, the white house has refused to provide this committee with a single piece of paper in response to our bipartisan requests, and thats simply unacceptable. And so, today im releasing the white house letter to you, and i hope our committee will impress upon them the need to provide the documents that we are seeking. Thank you very much. Congressman yeah . From what youve seen so far, do you believe that Michael Flynn broke the law from either not disclosing it, these payments on the security clearance, or not getting permission for getting these foreign payments . Personally, i see no information or no data to support the notion that general flynn complied with the law, and that is, he was supposed to seek permission and receive permission from both the secretary of state and the secretary of the army prior to traveling to russia to not only accept that payment but to engage in that activity. I see no evidence that he actually did that. Reporter and you think, congressman, that this could be punishable with up to five years in prison, you said. Yeah, i think it, definitely. Thats why i cited the code. But thats going to be left up to others to decide. We just wanted to know what his exposure is. But clearly, i agree with the chairman. I mean, he was supposed to get permission and he was supposed to report it, and he didnt, period. I mean, theres no evidence of it. Were not here to make the final determination. Right. What were going to do jointly is send the letter to the department of the army, the comptroller specifically, as well as the Inspector General there at the department of defense. At some point, they need to make that final determination. One of the remedies is to recover the money that was paid. Above and beyond that, i dont know. Is there any evidence in the files that general flynns contacts went beyond russia . Its really not something we specifically looked at today. Mr. Chairman, do you think that the white house is obstructing your investigation into these payments by not responding to the letter . No, no. This is something that general flynn, before he ever joined the Trump Administration, this is something general flynn was supposed to do as a former officer. I dont know in fact, im fairly curious, toes how widespread this is. No former military officer is allowed to accept payments from a foreign government, and my guess is, thats probably not the first time this has happened, and it does concern me. Question for mr. Cummings. Second question to you what was that question . Do you think the white house is obstructing your investigation . Well, we havent gotten as i said at the end of my statement, we havent gotten certain information that weve asked for. I cant call i wouldnt call it obstruction. These things happen. And as far as those documents are concerned, hopefully, well get them. By the way, emoluments, its interesting. A lot of people are totally unfamiliar with the emoluments clause of the constitution, but its something that i talked about a long time ago and said we should be able to avoid some of the problems that weve had. Now, it wouldnt have been avoidable here because this is done long before President Trump came into office, but that is a clause that is very significant and does not only apply to people like general flynn, but of course, to the president and his folks, too. Mr. Chairman, can you clarify can you talk about how many. [ inaudible ] you looked at today, the scope of documents . No, i cant get into those details. You know better than that. A lot of it was a verbal briefing, too, so. Can you clarify, are you ruling out calling general flynn . Are you referring to the Intelligence Committee . Look, the lead in investigative body is the select committee on intelligence. We have been pursuing this portion of it, the payments that happened prior to the inauguration of President Trump, but the lead on this general investigation is the select committee on intelligence, and ill support what the select committee needs. We can play a role in certain parts, but its more of a supportive role than anything else. [ inaudible ] i highly doubt it. Will you issue any kpeenz to get these records that youre looking for . We havent had to issue a subpoena so far. I mean, theyve been cooperative at the department of defense and the state department and the white house, but in this particular case, the law requires him to seek permission from the secretary of state and from the department of defense, and those are the entities of which weve been seeking information and have received information. The response were getting is there is no information, and that we believe is the potential violation. Thank you all very much. Thank you thanks very much. Bye now. All right. Youre hearing there from the Top Republican and top democrat on the House Oversight committee as they were just leaving a briefing, seeing classified documents for the first time about Michael Flynn, the nowfired National Security adviser to the president. And as Elijah Cummings put it, what they learned is extremely troubling. He said he has concerns, and what hes seeing may be a major problem. They just left that briefing. Lets talk to another person who just left that briefing, democratic congressman raja christa murthy, a democrat from illinois who sits on that very same committee. Congressman, thank you so much for coming in. Thank you, kate. We just heard from the chairman and ranking democrat. I want to get your take. You just walked out of that same meeting to view documents related to payments that flynn may or may not have received from foreign contacts. What did you learn . You know, basically, what i learned is that there are more questions now than answers at this point. Im just ive got to say, first of all, thank you to chairman chaffetz and Ranking Member cummings for arranging this briefing, this bipartisan approach to uncovering the facts here. But what i learned, i mean, just simply raises too many questions at this point, and its all the more reason why we have to continue with the investigation to get to the bottom of this. From what you saw and what youve been investigating so far, do you think Michael Flynn broke the law . I cant say. You know, i think that what we see is theres a lot of smoke here. And you know, we have to get to the bottom of this, because, quite frankly, now its Public Knowledge that hes had extensive contacts with foreign agents, foreign governments, and there may be a potential violation of the emoluments clause. That is the illegal receipt of payments from foreign governments. We have to get to the bottom of this, asap. Do you think from this, from what youve seen, do you think this reaches to the white house, or do you think this was Michael Flynn acting on his own, if he was acting on his own, inappropriately . Do you think the president knew anything about it . We dont know, kate. What i do know is that the classified documents that we saw today, you know, basically raise further questions about all of these issues. And again, we need to take the next steps and continue the investigation. You know, kate, we have to do this in a bipartisan, independent manner, and im, again, heartened that we started that process this morning on the Oversight Committee when chairman chaffetz and Ranking Members convened this highly classified meeting. Chairman chaffetz said this, when asked about what he saw and hes seen so far he sees no data to support that Michael Flynn complied with the law, a bit of a convoluted way of saying im not going to read into his words, but do you agree with that statement coming from chairman chaffetz . I concur with chairman chaffetz on that particular point. Its extremely disturbing what we saw this morning. And yes, i concur. I didnt see any evidence that mr. Flynn took steps to comply with the law. What then do you make of the white house sending over a letter saying that they were denying a request for documents that they have regarding flynn and his security clearance application . Whats your response to that . Well, i hope that they revisit this question. If not, we are going to have to revisit this question ourselves, with other agencies more directly what does that mean, congressman . Do you think the committee will try to use its subpoena power to get those documents from the white house . It may. I mean, this is something that this has to be discussed with the committee. Obviously, it requires chairman chaffetz, Ranking Member cummings, and the majority of the committee to request this. But in my humble opinion, we have to get to the facts, uncover all the facts related to this particular issue. What i saw this morning with regard to classified materials was very disturbing, and it just further raises the issue that we need an independent investigation, asap. You dont think that your committee can investigate your part of this on a bipartisan fashion . Well, ive called for an investigation in the past, but you know, at this point, weve got to make sure that there are no politics involved with this particular investigation. So do you think there is with congressman chaffetz and congressman cummings . Not so i mean, this morning was really a good step in the right direction, kate. In the past, you know, maybe not so much, but today we made some steps forward. But overall, kate, i mean, right now we need an independent i call for a 9 11style commission. And the facts this morning that i saw in those documents, those classified documents, point to an everglowi igrowing need for no signset that you are anywhere close to getting that independent 9 11style commission, but we do understand your request for it. Congressman, thank you very much for your time. Thank you, kate. A lot coming out of there. Appreciate it. A lot more to come. Well continue to follow this, but we have another event to go to soon. Moments from now, President Trump will be speaking live on capitol hill to commemorate the holocaust. The days of remembrance ceremony getting under way as we speak. Were watching the program getting under way as we speak. Other big news happening on capitol hill at the very same time is the president showing his cards on two key issues right now . President trump suggesting that he can wait a little longer for the border wall money that he wants so badly, but yet again, there are mixed messages coming out of the white house there. So, what does that mean for the looming Government Shutdown at the end of the week . Stand by for that one. Add this into the mix now, a whole new fight could be brewing. Cnn learning that President Trumps tax plan, which they are going to unveil tomorrow, includes, could include, likely to include a big cut in the Corporate Tax rate from 35 to 15 . The question there, is that going to blow up the deficit, and is that idea going to simply blow up on capitol hill . Lets talk about this right now and much more. Joining me now, cnns senior political analyst mark preston is here, and politics reporter for the daily beast, Betsy Woodruff. Mark, stand by. Im going to go back to capitol hill. As were speaking, President Trump speaking at a Holocaust Memorial event starting right now. Thank you very much. Thank you. Friends, members of congress, ambassadors, veterans, and most especially to the survivors here with us today, its an honor to join you on this very, very solemn occasion. I am deeply moved to stand before those who survived historys darkest hour. Your cherished presence transforms this place into a sacred gathering. Thank you, tom bernstein, allen holt, sarah bloomfield, and everyone at the Holocaust Memorial council and museum for your vital work and tireless contributions. We are privileged to be joined by israels ambassador to the United States, friend of mine, has done a great job and said some wonderful words, ron dermer. The state of israel is an eternal monument to the undying strength of the jewish people. The fervent dream that burned in the hearts of the oppressed is now filled with the breath of life and the star of david waves atop a great nation, arisen from the desert. To those in the audience who have served in american uniform, our country eternally thanks you. We are proud and grateful to be joined today by veterans of the second world war, who liberated survivors from the camps. Your sacrifice helped save freedom for the world, for the entire world. [ applause ] sadly, this year marks the first day of remembrance since the passing of elie wiesel, a great person, a great man. His absence leaves an empty space in our hearts, but his spirit fills this room. It is the kind of gentle spirit of an angel who lived through hell and whose courage still lights the path from darkness. Though elies story is very well known by so many people, its always worth repeating. He suffered the unthinkable horrors of the holocaust. His mother and sister perished in auschwitz. He watched his father slowly dying before his own young eyes in buchenwald. He lived through an endless nightmare of murder and death, and he inscribed on our collective conscience the duty we have to remember that long, dark night so as never to again repeat it. The survivors in this hall, through their testimony, fulfilled the righteous duty to never forget and engrave into the worlds memory the nazi genocide of the jewish people. You witnessed evil, and what you saw is beyond description, beyond any description. Many of you lost your entire family, everything and everyone you loved gone. You saw mothers and children led to mass slaughter. You saw the starvation and the torture. You saw the organized camp at the extermination of an entire people, and great people, i must add. You survived the getos, the concentration camps, and the death camps, and you persevered to tell your stories. You tell of these living nightmares, because despite your great pain, you believe in elies famous plea that for the dead and the living we must bear witness. That is why we are here today, to remember and to bear witness, to make sure that humanity never, ever forgets the nazis massacre, 6 million jews. Two out of every three jews in europe were murdered in the genocide. Millions more innocent people were imprisoned and executed by the nazis without mercy, without even a sign of mercy. Yet, even today there are those who want to forget the past, where still there are even those filled with such hate, total hate, that they want to erase the holocaust from history. Those who deny the holocaust are an accomplice to this horrible evil and wiell never be silent. We just wont. We will never, ever be silent in the face of evil again. [ applause ] denying the holocaust is only one of many forms of dangerous antisemitism that continues all around the world. Weve seen antisemitism on university campuses, in the public square, and in threats against jewish citizens. Even worse, its been on display in the most sinister manner when terrorists attacked jewish communities, or when aggressors threaten israel with total and complete destruction. This is my pledge to you. We will confront antisemitism. [ applause ] we will stamp out prejudice, we will condemn hatred, we will bear witness, and we will act. As president of the United States i will always stand with the jewish people, and i will always stand with our great friend and partner, the state of israel. So today we remember the 6 million jewish men, women and children whose lives and dreams were stolen from this earth. We remember the millions of other innocent victims, the nazis so brutally targeted and so brutally killed. We remember the survivors who bore more than we could imagine. We remember the hatred and evil that sought to extinguish human life, dignity, and freedom. But we also remember the light that shone through the darkness. We remember sisters and brothers who gave everything to those they loved, survivors like steven springfield, who in the long death march carried his brother on his back. As he said, i just couldnt give in. We remember the brave souls who banded together to save the lives of their neighbors, even at the risk of their own life. And we remember those first hopeful moments of liberation, when at long last, the american soldiers arrived in camps and cities throughout occupied europe, waving the same beautiful flags before us today, singing those three glorious words you are free. It is this love of freedom, this embrace of human dignity, this call to courage in the face of evil, that the survivors here today have helped to write on to our hearts. The jewish people have endured oppression, persecution, and those who have sought and planned their destruction. Yet, through the suffering, they have persevered, they have thrived, and they have enlightened the world. We stand in awe of the unbreakable spirit of the jewish people. I want to close with a story enshrined in the museum that captures the moment of liberation in the final days of the war. It is the story of gerta klein, a young, jewish woman from poland. Some of you know her. Gertas family was murdered by the nazis. She spent three years imprisoned in labor camps, and the last four years of the war on a terrible death march. She assumed it was over. At the end, on the eve of her 21st birthday, her hair had lost all of its color, she weighed a mere 68 pounds, yet, she had the will to live another day. It was tough. Gerta later recalled the moment she realized that her longawaited deliverance had arrived. She saw a car coming towards her. Many cars had driven up before, but this one was different. On its hood, in place of that wretched swastika, was a star, beautiful, gleaming, white star. Two american soldiers got out. One walked up to her. The first thing gerta said was what she had been trained to say we are jewish, you know. We are jewish. And then, he said, so am i. It was a beautiful moment after so much darkness, after so much evil. As gerta took the soldier to see other prisoners, the american did something she had long forgotten to even expect. He opened the door for her. In gertas words, that was the moment of restoration of humanity, of humanness, of dignity, and of freedom. But the story does not end there, because as some of you know, that Young American soldier who liberated her and who showed her such decency would soon become her husband. A year later, they were married. In her words, he opened not only the door for me, but the door to my life and to my future. Gerta has since spent her life telling the world of what she witnessed. She, like those survivors, who are among us today, has dedicated her life to shining a light of hope through the dark of night. Your courage strengthens us. Your voices inspire us. And your stories remind us that we must never, ever shrink away from telling the truth about evil in our time. Evil is always seeking to wage war against the innocent and to destroy all that is good and beautiful about our common humanity, but evil can only thrive in darkness. And what you have brought us today is so much more powerful than evil. You have brought us hope, hope that love will conquer hatred, that right will defeat wrong, and that peace will rise from the ashes of war. Each survivor here today is a beacon of light, and it only takes one light to illuminate even the darkest space. Just like it takes only one truth to crush 1,000 lies and one hero to change the course of history. We know that in the end, good will triumph over evil and that as long as we refuse to close our eyes or to silence our voices, know that justice will ultimately prevail. So, today we mourn, we remember, we pray, and we pledge, never again. Thank you. God bless you and god bless america. Thank you very much. Thank you. [ applause ] thank you very much. Powerful remarks just now from President Trump at what is becoming an annual event at the capitol, in conjunction with the Holocaust Memorial museum, the days of remembrance ceremony. Hearing some very strong remarks from the president there at this very important time and this very important occasion. Mark preston is here with me. These are, some of what we heard from the president here id say a lot of folks wanted to hear from this president. I mean, there is no mincing this. I am deeply moved to stand before those who survived historys darkest hour, and i know it really struck you when he said those who deny the holocaust are an accomplice to this horrible evil. This was the donald trump that we just saw in the past few moments over the first 100 days, i think he would be a lot more successful. This is the measured, forceful, powerful type of leader right now that i think the United States needs. And to your point, i mean, for our viewers here, were sitting here listening and really were caught on a lot of the things that he said that is going push back against a lot of the criticisms of him, including, as we talked about, how white nationalist, when you talk about stamping out prejudice and because lets be honest, theres been criticism that hes faced at many turns that he has been soft on antisemitism right sdwrorks p. To put it one way. The white house rightfully faced criticism that on International Remembrance day, the white house statement did not mention jews at all. But this, this says something, what we just heard. Yeah, no doubt. And i also think that, kate, he also gave us clues to the future. He also said we will never, ever be silent in the face of evil again. You can take what happened back then, you can look where we are in syria right now, and you have to wonder, was he talking about syria . He also talked about aggressors attacking israel, and you have to say, my gosh, is he speaking about iran . So, you know, there are possibly some clues we can take away from this speech today about how he will act on Foreign Policy in the future. An important event every year and a shoutout to the Holocaust Memorial museum, one of the most important institutions that you can visit and support in washington, visit and see that memorial museum. New developments in the push towards President Trumps 100th day in office. Many republicans now kind of pushing back already. On trumps proposal to cut the Corporate Tax rate from 35 to 15 . Where does this go from here . Lets talk about this. Political analyst is still here with me and Betsy Woodruff is joining us. Cutting Corporate Taxes is something he promised and something he wants. But it does not seem completely in line where republicans are at the moment and have been for a long time on their dream of real kind of, like, once in a generation tax reform. Long sustained fax reform. Republicans would love to see Corporate Taxes cut as well and that is part of their proposal, but right now they have a trump wants to go from 35 down to 15 and to do that you would add 2. 4 trillion to a debt that we already have at more than 19 trillion. Put that all together and you have fiscal conservatives in congress who cant swallow that. What are you hearing . Could this be a replay of how health care played out . Your democrat, theyre not going to offer up any help whatsoever in these negotiations and then could this end up in the way of health care meaning the factions of the Republican Party just go where . Thats certainly plausible and the fact that the white house is moving fairly quickly on tax reform. They havent laid out a lot of the details. Absolutely recall the Health Care Mess that we all went through about a month ago. That said, i think its a very good chance that this 15 tax rate is an opening gambit. I think theres a good shot thats what were going to be seeing in this situation. That said, the Trump Administration has been very bullish about where they see this going. Do you thaink that it helps that the president is out in front and kind of lay this is out first . Paul ryan has been working on blueprint since he entered congress. It sure doesnt hurt. The fact is trump hasnt had any major successes working with congress but taxes seem to be a bit closer to his heart than health care. Health care is an extremely complicated policy issue, something he doesnt have a lot of experience on. But with taxes anyone who works in Corporate America understands that these have a massive impact on the way that our customer functions. Certainly the way the president talks about taxes indicates its a lot closer to his heart. Much more of a passion project. That will make it easier for him to sell. But its still going to be tough getting all the republicans in congress or most of them on board with this kind of thing. Lets talk about mixed messages and the looming Government Shutdown at the end of the week and the president s 100th day in office. One thing that has become a centerpiece of is the government going to shut down or not is the president wanting money for the border wall in this funding bill. Last night f we follow the piece, last night we heard from white house officials that he thought he was no longer a deal breaker to have demanding money be in. Then today the word is that yes, he does still want money for the border wall to be included in this must pass bill. But then listen here to kellyanne conway, the top trump adviser and how she described it to fox. Hes not going to get that 1. 1 billion to build a wall necessarily, at least not this week. Not that week, but the president made clear just yesterday building a wall remains a very important priority to him. Kellyanne conway, no one knows yet whos got it right here. She says not this week. Thats what she acknowledged this morning. Whats going on here . Let me say this, i hope that shes right toch. To see the government go into a shutdown again and have a whole evaluation again would be terrible right now. Retreat right now from donald trump on a pledge and a promise and a vow could be detrimental to the United States at this point. So i do think he needs to back off. I do think democrats, though, could come to the middle. Give him funding for more drones. Perhaps more personnel along the border. That might be a way to keep the government funded and to keep both sides from absolutely going to an allout war. Lets be honest s. This a scenario where the president would not face blame if the government shut down . He would absolutely face blame. It would be his insistence that it doesnt need to be in the bill. Right and its not supported by the American People. Great to see you, mark. Thank you so much. Betsy, great to see you as well. Back to our breaking news.
