All that and so much more ahead at this hour. Happy monday everyone. Im john berman. Happy new year john nice to see you. Im michaela pereira. We start with the search for airasia flight 8501. Setbacks in the search now. Todays operations had to be called off because of storms. Officials say divers who were able to make it to the bottom of the sea encountered muddy waters leaving zero visibility. A large piece of wreckage initially believed to be part of the plane, well it turned out to be from a sunken ship. Search teams did recover three more bodies today, bringing the total number recovered to 37. Each victim is returned to surabaya in indonesia. That is where the flight originated. Our david molko is there. David, we now know one of the large objects searchers spotted, they were very hopeful, it turned out to be from part of a ship wreck, not the jet at all. But there were other objects they found. What do we know about those . Thats right, john and michaela. A lot of news coming in from the search zone on monday but just not the news that search officials wanted. Really whats running the show here, what is deciding the pace of this search is the weather. Weve been talking about the weather for more than a week now and everyday were talking about it again. The reason even though forecasters say things are Getting Better maybe less thunderstorms or better visibility were in monsoon season season. Weather request change in the blink of an eye. You had divers in the water for a second day in a row. Zero visibility. Searching in pitch black. So no news no confirmation on whether or not they have found the wreckage of the flight. David, another setback is there are no pings being detected from those flight data recorders. Thats such a vital piece of the puzzle here. Bring us up to speed on that and also the fact that the u. S. Has their assets there aiding in the search as well as other nations. Absolutely john and michaela. A very important part of the search and the investigation as well. Tomorrows going to be tuesday, in just a few hours, actually. It will be day ten of the searchandrescue effort. Ten days since the plane went down. The batteries on the black boxes, the cockpit recorder and flight data recorder, the batteries on the pingers only register to last for about a month. So thats about 20 days left. Its not yet a race against the clock to listen for them. We know from searchandrescue officials that they have been sending ships with equipment, underwater microphones, to listen for the sounds. What we havent heard from them though, is that theyve actually deployed those, that the equipment is actually in the water. At this point not sure if that is because of the weather conditions or just because the equipment isnt yet in place. Well see what happens in the next 24 hours. John and michaela . Our thanks to you, david molko. Lets dig a little further now. We have with us retired Lieutenant ColonelKen Christian son, an aviation consultant with air force search and rescue. Also our aviation analyst and pbs science correspondent miles obrien. Good to have both of you here starting out the new year. Were on almost as david told us day 10 in getting about a theory from indonesian meteorologists. Theyre saying they think that icing, some sort of icing of the engines or within the engines could have brought the plane down. What do you make of that . Well again, i hear its a theory and we need to keep in the that box of a theory because until aircraft wreckage gets detected gets taken out of the water and looked at we dont know what took this airplane down. Ice is one thing at altitude. The other thing that is associated with thunderstorms is turbulence. And turbulence can be a large player in why this aircraft went down not ice. If there is icing conditions hail can damage aircraft can shatter windows, can mess up the leading edge of the aircraft and it can also be adjusted in the engines. So that type of icing could damage the airplane. But more associated with turbulence for what i think well be looking for with this accident. Miles, i want to ask you about this icing report that was first in the wall street journal because i know you have some concerns about it. Does it make sense to you that as the wall street journal reports first on friday that the engine could have experienced somehow icing at High Altitude . Is that what would bring down an a320 . Not in and of itself in the way we have seen it happen john. That was a simplistic take on what was a very complicated dynamic situation. When you go into a thunderstorm any pilot worth his salt, the first thing they do is put on continuous ignition. In other words, its like turning the car key on your car consistently in case it stalls. This is too avoid just what were talking about, a flameout of the engines. Yes, icing im certain was probably in the mix here somehow but its somewhat colonel christensen was saying there was probably hail, there might have been icing that covered over the sensor which is measure air speed that might have been on the aerodynamic surfaces. To say simply it shut down the engines and caused this i think is not right because the plane could have glided for about 100 miles, they could have turned toward land and certainly crew would have gotten off some communication to air Traffic Control if it was simply engine flameout. Colonel, also another piece of news coming out that airasia flight 8501 apparently was not permit it had fly the route they flew the day that flight yaift vanished. We understand they were allowed to fly four days of the week. In terms of what this means and how significant is this what are your thoughts . Were just talking about a saturated airspace and a scheduling issue. Sunday is not a reason its not causal for bringing an aircraft down. So i think we can discount that readily, the pilot in command has the authority to deviate the airport around weather to save that aircraft for Flight Safety reasons. Again, the air Traffic Controllers have to deal with that. They dont necessarily have to get permission to deviate for weather so this scheduling issue sounds like posturing. It has nothing to do with what cuba causal. Miles, i want to shift to the black boxes right now, the two of them and, in fact, the lack of any kind of contact, no hearing of the socalled pings from the black box. Nearly ten days into the search theyve recovered 37 bodies so far, pieces of what they think might be wreckage. To me, at least, you would think they have a general enough idea to have the sonar in the water, the detectors, listening devices to hear the pings, yet no pings. Does this call into question the general effectiveness of these black boxes and their communication abilities . To say the least, john. Weve been to this movie way too many times now. How many times do we have to go through this before we as passengers demand that the airlines and regulators get into the 21st century. Its crazy. Absolutely crazy. Were sticking microphones in the water hoping to hear a ping from something 100 or maybe several thousand feet below. There are ways to solve this problem and, yes, its going to cost a little bit of money to have that capability but think of the anguish of these families as they try to find out what happened to their loved ones think of an industry that relies on safety and needs to know what happened to this aircraft not tomorrow but yesterday so its high time we got beyond the black box with these pingers and moved into some capability to put data in the cloud when something is happening on these aircraft that is not good. Well have to see if theres any action taken because i think now is too late as you say, miles. Miles obrien, Lieutenant Colonel ken christensen. Miles, youre not off the hook yet, stick around. Ahead for us cnn has a crew on board a ship searching for airasia flight 8501. We are within the area where some bodies and debris have been found but you can see how challenging it is the fact that as soon as you see something in the distance it disappears behind a wave and then its very difficult to try and spot it again. A sevenyearold little girl is back home in illinois after surviving a plane crash that killed both of her parents, her sister and her cousin. This is such a tragic story. But it also is an amazing story of survival. The family was flying back from a vacation in key west to their home in illinois when the twin engine plane they were in crashed in the woods of kentucky. The little girl sailor gutzler crawled out of the plane. The plane was upside down. All she was dressed in was shorts from the trip, no shoes. She walked three quarters of a mile barefoot through the woods in near freezing weather to get help. She walked up to a house, knocked on the door. Seven years old. Earlier i spoke with the man, Larry Wilkins, who answered that door. How many times would you open a door and see a sevenyearold girl barefoot in short pants and bleeding tears in her eyes and lips trembling and needed help. Once in a lifetime for my. She was amazingly composed for a sevenyearold girl who had just got out of a plane crash and just lost her parents. Its amazing. I have a couple sevenyearold boys and i know how they talk and even in good times they dont always necessary make a huge amount of sense. Explain to me what she said to you. How did she explain this to you . She just said that she said my mom and dad are dead we just had a plane crash and the plane was upside down. Its kind of unbelievable you know that that a little girl would come out and you have to bear in mind how rough the terrain is through that woods a lot of briar bushes. Her legs were jut cut up from the bottom of her shorts to the tip of her toes and it was about 35 36 degrees and barefooted and had a wasnt raining, just drizzling, you know, so she was a little bit wet but not soaking wet but a little bit wet. I imagine them little feet were pretty dagon cold. And you brought her inside put her feet up got her warm. You got about ten minutes, you say, before the emts, before emergency officials finally were able to get on the scene. Thankfully they were close. What did you talk about during those ten minutes . What went on inside the house . Well i tried to get all the information out of her i could but a little sevenyearold girl lipping trembling, trying to talk couldnt understand much of what she said. I probably asked her name three or four times and i never did get it right but when the state policeman came he would write it down and hold it up to her and say is this the way you spell it . He finally got her name . Talk to me about the area around your house. You said there was a creek bed, briars a difficult walk for anybody let alone a sevenyearold girl. We had an ice storm here in 2008 and this woods is well i was told last night it was about 1,400 acres total but here im probably two blocks from a minor high wayway. To know the good lord was with her, if she walked the other direction, you probably wouldnt find her for a week because shed be walking into more woods. But the ice storm knocked these trees down id say probably 20 , 30 of the trees are mocked down so everywhere she walked she had a detour. Probably as the crow flies maybe a quarter of a mile from where that plane crashed. But you couldnt walk it in a straight line. Id say she walk lead the quarters of a mile because she had a creek bed to go through, briar bushes to go around fallen trees to walk around. Ive said many times i dont like to walk this that woods in the daylight much less dark with no lights. I didnt do anything you wouldnt do or anybody you know probably would dont if a small child comes to your door in that kind of condition. Ive got two little dachshund dogs and they helped her a lot. Her granddad told me she had a dachshund. But these little dogs love everybody, you know and they took to her just immediately. I think that helped calm her down quite a bit. What an amazing man. He said he did what anyone would have done but he did the right thing, he brought her in calmed her down. And those two dogs not insignificant. An Amazing Store tri fact that they were there, the knock was so quiet the dogs were the ones that alerted him otherwise he might not have known she was there. Well talk much more about this. So interesting. How does a sevenyearold go through this . Survive a plane crash, have the presence of mind to walk for help, have the coherence to explain what happened . Well speak with Kelly Wallace and a child psychologist next. Her family on board was unresponsive. She utilized her noninjured arm and hand to free herself from the aircraft. Such an amazing story of survival. A sevenyearold girl pulls herself from a crash in the woods of kentucky walks in the darkness through rough wilderness and cold for help all the while she has blood all over her legs her arm was injured, bones broken her parents, sister and cousin were killed in this plane crash. She had the presence of mind to walk through the woods and knock on a mans door and get help. Joining us now is our digital correspondent Kelly Wallace, psychologist wendy walsh also joins us. Ladies we have to talk about this story because its so remarkable, the presence of mind kelly. We talk about the fact she has just survived a traumatizing experience for an airplane she was in to crash to the earth killing the people she loves more than anyone else in the world. She witnesses that and yet she gets out and makes her way through underbrush that i think im terrified to walk through. Thats why were using the words amazing miraculous. Its not hyperbole. No any parent is thinking you mentioned this john. I have a seven and eight and a halfyearold. Could my girls i hope they could but my god i dont know. I know people on social media have been wondering if did she learn survival skills from her father, from her family. One pastor in the community was saying yes, he did teach her what to do if the plane went down but we were talking resiliency determination, drive and focus that clearly saved her life i dont know that every sevenyearold would have that sense of mind to do what she did on that night. My firsthand research im not so sure either. Wendy is it not training is it maybe just basic human instant that even a sevenyearold has in this situation in fight or flight at all costs . I would err more on that side that its an instinctive survival mechanism. Lets face it, she was in shock. If im scared in the dark i can barely find the right key to put in a lock when im overthinking something so imagine at this point shes in shock and her body is on automatic function and from that point the instincts kick in. Think about warmth stay alive. Also the idea perhaps that maybe her parents arent dead if she can get them help. I keep thinking about what await this is little one because her parents have died one of her siblings has died a cousin has died in this accident. I understand theres another sibling that may be out there. Grandparents are said to be caring for her now how do you begin to help a child deal with this trauma . Not just having lost people but been in the very accident that took their lives . Heres what i want people to understand. So often i will hear lay people say thank god she was young, she wont barely remember. Actually opposite happens. The earlier the trauma in life, the more it is stored in the bones as feelings if you will. Secondly i want people to understand that part of life is the bumps and knocks and awful things and good things that happen to us. The other part is the biological prediggs disposition. Some people come into the world being more resilient, being more optimistist i can having better psychological survival skills, if you will. We dont know what shes armed with yet. We dont know what the long term will be. I would say because of my area of interest and expertise is attachment that this kind of traumatic attachment event will certainly hurt all of her relationships. But it can be healed. Early intervention lots of professional help, thats the important thing. We know she is tough, i will say. That and kelly, i spoke to Larry Wilkins early today, the man who took her in. I was just thinking how lucky she was she found this man and talking to a sevenyearold in any circumstance is easy if you want to find out something coherent but he was able to understand what she was saying she was able to convey it. That has to be a skill he had no question about it. You mention how lucky he was there, that the dogs were barking and this he was kind and kargs and warn and loving at that moment she needed it. She had that sense about her. She knew what happened. She was obviously in tremendous shock and still is. The other issue we have to deal with is being that sole survivor of a plane crash. Cnn has aired a documentary. There is a tremendous survivors guilt. Why wasty one that survived . What about my sister . What about my parents. Im glad we could discuss this with you. We all send our collective love and thoughts to that little one, she has quite a road ahead of her. It sounds like theres a great many of support. We know that a Memorial Fund has been set up already you can go to our web site, cnn. Com impact. The money will go towards her emotional, physical and educational support in those years to come. Ahead for us at this hour its been more than a week and the clock is taking. Where is airasia flight 8501 and how is the weather getting in this way of this Recovery Mission . Hes accused of killing three people injuring more than 250, for rising the city of boston and arguably our whole nation. Dzhokhar tsarnaev the man accused of plotting and carrying out the 2013 marathon bombing is now on trial. Were live outside the courthouse next. Youre only young once. Unless you have a subaru. announcer the subaru xv crosstrek. Symmetrical allwheel drive plus 34 mpg. Love. Its what makes a subaru a subaru. Jury selection happening at this hour in the trial of accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Thats his brother tamerlan tsarnaev. Over the next few days 1200 jurors will be questioned. The jury will decide where tsarnaev is guilty of the bombing that killed three people and wounded 260 others. If they find him guilty, this same jury will decide whether he will face the Death Penalty. Our justice reporter evan perez is here with us Deborah Feyerick is outside the courthouse in boston. Deb, i believe in your opinion the courtroom. Tell us what went on there this morning. Its interesting. Theres so many jurors theyre meeting in the jury room. You have 200 people on one side of the glass, had beens of the media on the other side they were looking at us we were looking at them then in walks Dzhokhar Tsarnaev flanked by his lawyers. He has sort of this long relaxed gait for lack of a better description. He was wearing tan khakis, a black sweater and his hair and his beard looking very dishevels. At one point the judge made him stand so the jurors, the men and women, potential jurors could get a look at him. The judge reading out the charges against him, including the deaths of three people at the Boston Marathon and the later shooting of an m. I. T. Officer when the brothers allegedly went on their on the run trying to get out of boston once their pictures were released. So rather surreal. It took about 20 25 minutes. The judge telling the men and women not to talk about this case, that its unclear whether, in fact they will be selected but the they know anybody on the witness list that could disqualify them. Also if theyre against the death penal they also could be a problem because this is a Death Penalty case and therefore the jurors who are selected must in their heart be able to find death if thats what they believe the penalty should be john and michaela. Deb, thanks for that. Evan perez is here with us in studio. I understand there were though his camp his lawyers Defense Attorneys and federal prosecutors had met, there was some sort of discussion about a possible plea deal those talks failed. Give us an update on what you know. Well, the plea they were talking about was for tsarnaev to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence perhaps with a with no parole. In tend the federal prosecutors decided they did not want to remove take off the table the chance of him getting the Death Penalty which is what squelched the entire case. Now, this is not theres not much doubt as to whether or not the first what the first phase of the trial is going to turn out to be. Everyone expects that he will be convicted. Whether or not he gets death is the big question and so now well have to see for the second phase of this trial what happens. Deb, give us a sense of some of the evidence really. Theres a lot of overwhelming evidence from photographic to physical to writing evidence that they have against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. What are they expected to do, the prosecution . Well there is a lot of evidence and its likely that the prosecution will begin their openings which is three weeks from now, january 26 its likely theyll begin by showing the jury images of him, video of him actually putting the backpack on the ground. You have to keep in mind, there were some 12,000 videos ultimately submitted, including from businesses and spectators at the marathon so you have additional video of him and his brother. Youve also got a note that was scrawled on the inside of the boat. This is where it could get interesting for the defense. The defense has said look Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was a pawn he was following his brother he had no say in the matter. That will be more difficult to prove once they introduce the note he allegedly scrawled on the inside of the boat which basically gave very clear depiction of what he thinks about america and also saying that this was on behalf of all muslims who were being killed and essentially it was in retaliation for the wars that america was involved in in both iraq and afghanistan. Quickly, evan i keep thinking about seating a jury. It was such an emotional time for the nation but specifically for boston. The challenge of seat ago jury of people who can, you know without prejudice, judge this man for what happened to their city and tore apart the nation. Right. Especially because the defense has been trying repeatedly, to move this trial outside of boston and they got rejected. Now, you know massachusetts does not have the Death Penalty. However, in federal cases this is a state that has handed down juries have handed down the Death Penalty. So its not out of the question here. But there are a lot of people who say a jury in massachusetts would be less likely to give the Death Penalty than they would in some places they could move to trial. So be careful what you ask for here. Evan perez, Deborah Feyerick, thanks so much. Ahead that the hour, there are passenger rights but what about pilot rights . Could the pilot of airasia flight 8501 refused to have taken off due to weather . Who makes that ultimate call whether or not to fly . Another silent protest that speaks volumes. Police officers in a new show of defiance against new york city mayor bill de blasio. Coming up well speak with one officer between the ongoing tension between people and the law. New setbacks in the search for remains and wreckage from airasia flight 8501. Todays operations had to be called off early because of severe storms. Officials say divers who did make it to the bottom of the sea encountered muddy waters almost zero visibility. Large piece of wreckage initially believed to be part of the missing plane. It turned out to be part of a sunken ship. Search teams, however, managed to find three more bodies today, bringing the total number of victims recovered to 37. Each victim is returned to surabaya, need indonesia, where the doomed flight originated. The visibility has been so bad over the last 24 hours divers say they cant see right in front of them once they surface, the waves are just brutal. We saw some of that before. Chad myers joins us from the cnn weathercenter in atlanta and also joining us are aviation analyst miles obrien. Chad let me start with you. Chad its very very difficult there on the bottom of the sea. Its like trying to drive on the highway in dense fog with your high beams on. You cant see anything. The divers will have bright spotlight bus all of the particle, all that muck, the murk in the water will be reflected back at the divers face and so think about trying to go down somewhere where you know there will be danger. You already know if you find fuselage theres going to be the heavy stuff on the bottom miles of wire dangling through the water itself and some things floating from the top of those wires so you dont even know what youre getting yourself into already and you cant see more than probably a couple feet i know they said zero visibility. But its probably a couple feet. The waves are mixing up the silt on the bottom of the ocean it wasnt bad until the storm moved over the search area now its good again. So its good at night and bad during the day, but theres something thats going to help them now, sidescan sonar. We dont care with sidescan sonar whether its day or night because that system doesnt know whether its day or night. Its not looking for sunshine its not visibly looking for something. Its sending out a signal, the waves are coming down, the wind is coming down even sunday wasnt a bad day. All in all it wasnt a bad day compared to what weve been but now i think tuesday, wednesday, without that wind cover, without that wind blowing at 30 40 Miles Per Hour it gets better from here. Chad you still have to have a ship out there to sort of launch the auv with the sidescan sonar, so i know the bigger the ship the better they are to weather the waves but sit still its putting the search folks at risk. We showed pictures when i was talking and i wanted to talk about those pictures because we were out there on that ship. Cnn crews were out there on that ship and there werent rollers like you see in the ocean when youre on a cruise ship, this isnt deep water. Those waves were sharp and the front end of that boat banging up against those sharp waves and spray coming over the ship and all that. Heres how side scan sonar works. Its not really side. Its down but it sees a little to the side because of the try i cant think that will the system is using. A signal, a sound comes off the bottom of the boat or a buoy or something towed behind doesnt really matter. If it finds something on the sea floor, it will echo that back. Kind of like the way a bat will see things will see bugs. Its that Echo Location here. Thats the same thing were seeing here. Theres the Echo Location of the ship and thats what the ship at the surface would look like. Not recognizable as a boat or plane or wing but certainly something not a flat piece of the ocean. Thats one good news here. One good thing, we dont have rough terrain at the bottom its pretty flat. When we do find the ship it will show up quite rapidly. Miles, i want to ask you a question about the weather that caught our eyes. There was a report in the wall street journal that says airasia pilots until this weekend they assessed their own weather situation before takeoff. The pilots made their own call based on whether they would fly. That doesnt happen in the United States with u. S. And european carriers and special dispatchers who make that call. Is that a problem that this was going on . Lets talk about how its done in the u. S. And europe first of all. Any time you push back from a gate both your captain and a licensed dispatcher have signed off on that flight. And each can veto whether that flight occurs based on weather or any number of issues which might be in play. But certainly weather is the big one and each of them would study the weather, come to their own conclusion as to the best routing, whether its wise to do the flight in the first place. Whether they have a licensed dispatcher system like that in that part of the world i honestly dont know. But i do know this. They left two hours early which already thats unusual for what were used to here in this part of the world. Were they trying to beat some weather . If they were up early before the Weather Office opened maybe they went and got the weather by other means. What they were talking about is literally a facetoface briefing with a meteorological officer which we dont do in this country, havent done for years and years and years, its all done electronically or maybe on the phone. So i think we might be putting too much credence into that. It absolutely would boggle my mind if they took off without checking the weather at all. There are any number of ways to get Weather Information these days as we all well know and lets not forget that you know when you check the weather at your point of origin what happens 40 minutes late interyour flight when youre talking about dynamic thunderstorms can be a very different picture, indeed. So i think when you look in the grand context here of how this airline does business its one little thing to think about. I dont think its going to be a major contributing factor. All right, miles obrien, chad myers, thanks so much. Really appreciate it. Ahead for us at this hour cnn inside the search zone for airasia flight 8501. Christine romans tells us that all the time. Well watch that at this hour here on cnn. We have been talking about how the weather in the java sea has made finding airasia flight 8501 not just daunt bug also dangerous. The wind, the waves, conspiring against search crews. Our Paula Hancocks had a firsthand look of the kinds of conditions they are facing. Shes one of the few reporters who boarded a search vessel and travelled into the search zone. Well michaela and john we have had heard plenty about these summer monsoons these adverse weather conditions in indonesia and on sunday i had the chance to travel with one of the searchandrescue teams to see exactly how this weather is affecting their operations. The desserted beaches of west borneo, indonesia, belie the horror at sea. More than 100 nautical miles to the search zone calm waters and sunshine soon disappear. Weve been on the sea now for about four hours, we have another three or four hours to go and as you can see, the weather has started to close in. The closer we get to this crash location. But were being told that even though these waves are fairly high and you can see its a lot choppier than it was, that this is still considered fairly good weather. This is better than it has been for some days. The crew looks for deb reeris and bodies. One of them spots something. Hes unsure what exactly. The captain calls it in a larger ship in the area will investigate. The searchandrescue boat has a specific mission to deliver a pinger locator to help with the vital search for the socalled black boxes. But the captain is nervous about the weather. I feel a heavy moral burden he says. I have a responsibility to keep those on board safe but its so important to help find bodies and this is not a large ship. Sector 4 of the search zone the contact boat is in sight. Time to hand over the equipment. Easier said than done. One of the men whos in charge of that equipment was going to jump across but, quite frankly, he doesnt want to now. Hes said its simply too dangerous. Next job, transferring the boat from which to operate the equipment. A task the crew struggles with until dark. They have to admit defeat at least for today. An exhausted crew returns to land with only half the mission accomplished. Now it has become a very International Affair this search operation. We know the u. S. Has two ships on site. Australia, malaysia singapore to name a few but the weather means theres only a limit to what they can do. That was a tremendous report. We appreciate you getting on the water with the search crews. Ahead of this hour a heros funeral supposed to be about grieving not airing grievances. That was the message from the nypd commissioner to officers but some defied his request. I think there as an antipolice environment to the entire nation right now and that our two assassinated brothers are its a clear example of that antipolice environment. Things are pretty tense between city hall and new york Police Department. Some cases it seems to be getting worse, not better. Once again Police Officers turned their backs on mayor bill de blasio during a funeral for one of their own. This happened yesterday as police said farewell to officer wenjian liu. He and his partner, officer rafael ramos were gunned down as they sat in their police cruiser. Some officers turned their backs to the mayor at ramoss funeral as well. We have den never sharrif, a 30yearold police detective. Also with us is new York City Council member jamani williams. Thank you so much for both of you to be here a conversation about this. Thank you. Officer sharrif as a man who wears the blue uniform, youve been in the service some 30 years, you are also obviously africanamerican im curious what your reaction is sir, to seeing your fellow officers turning their back to the mayor of the city. I think the top lines of cnn should be that the officers that have lost their lives for their communities, the dedication that they gave for their communities, i think that should be the front page of newspapers and cnn rather than to see all of the talk of what the officers have done. Thats taking away from the lives and dedication that the officers have given to their Police Department. Are you saying that the funeral is not the right place to protest, officer . Are you saying that these officers have a legitimate grievance against the mayor apart from the funeral itself . Well im not a part of that but what i a part of new York City Police department so its hard for me to speak on it but what im saying is that you lost two officers who dedicated their lives to their community and im quite sure they gave their lives doing what they were supposed to do and the headlines are reading the Police Officers are turning their backs on the mayor at the funeral. Council man, youre a Council Member in the beautiful city of new york im curious what your thoughts are on this. I see that you have a pin that says justice for eric garner. Where does your heart lie . Where do you see this situation . I have a button that says reduce gun violence. Those are two things i am passionate about. One thing it does it does take away from the supreme sacrifice that officer liu made and officer ramos made. I think thats what we should be dedicating our time to. I would also say although there were some officers not all officers that did turn their back on the mayor, i know for a fact that the mayor nor the city council has turned their backs on the police and we wont because we represent all of new york city including those who turned their backs. We wont turn our back from them. How do we get this to stop happening and how do we find Common Ground . Because it seems as though there are two sides. Not all Police Officers in new york city but how do we get the two sides to come to the table and lets put these hard feelings aside, were all working for the same common good are we not . What are the legitimate grievances and what are being mixed up in rhetoric. Im not a police officer, i dont understand what theyre going through, but i can understand at this time if two of your brethren were ambushed in a vehicle, that might be a scary time for you. Thats a legitimate thing to be discussed. Many of the other rhetorical things that i heard are based in something thats real. When we discuss Public Safety reform which is not just a police issue its many other agencies we have to bring into discussion when we have those discussions people tend to view it as an antipolice reform and thats not something were discussing. So we have to bifurcate what is legitimate grievances so we can deal with it and what is hyperbolic rhetoric thats not adding to the discussion. Until we can do that honestly it is difficult to move forward. Officer sharrif, i wonder if you can help us understand what the issues are. Do police around the country, whether it be in berkeley missouri where you are and if youve talked to other people. Do they feel like there is an anticop sentiment right now that is bubbling up around the country . Because i have heard that complaint. Well i dont think its mainly an anticop sentiment, i think people of color want justice and what theyre seeing now is theyre not feeling as though justice is being served in the communities. I think that when we look at it from an africanamerican perspective, we see black officers standing in the middle of the road. The community expects for us to stand up for them and yet the Police Department is looking for us to stand up for them and yet we have problems right within the Police Department with discrimination and other issues. I have yet to hear from the Guardians Association in new york which was a member of the National BlackPolice Association when i was president of it and i think blacks black officers play a major role in our communities because were out there on the front line and yet were having discussion but youre not talking to black officers who are the rank and file officers who deal with the impoverished communities and the black and latino communities. Were out there daily and we know the problems because we hear them. And i teach in the schools and things like that but yet our voice is not heard. And we can help resolve this issue if only we 1i9sit at the table. The president and the mayor from st. Louis put together a council and yet they just put one black officer unfortunately we lost our satellite signal. Thanks to officer dennis sharrif and council man jamani williams. Thats it for us.
