His fiance and his family. 72. Thats how many hours it will take the new ebola Domestic Response Team of doctors, nurses, and trainers to deploy if the virus pops up somewhere else in the United States. And just a short time ago, the head of the National Institute of allergy and Infectious Diseases, dr. Anthony fauci, reminded us of a significant number in the United States dealing with ebola. In the United States, two people have gotten infected with ebola. Two. Both of them were taking care of a desperately ill patient in a risky situation. You have to distinguish the two nurses who were the only two people who were taking care of patients who got infected from the risk to the general public who arent anywhere near an ebola patient muchless a very sick ebola patient. We also just learned from Doctors Without Borders that a worker in norway who had ebola has been cured and discharged from the hospital. Good news about this medical worker in spain. She seems to be doing much better. I want to bring in dr. Seema yasmin, a Public Health professor in dallas and a former disease protective at the cdc and dr. Frank esper. Dr. Yasmin, youre part of the community where more than 40 people have been released from varying levels of restrictions and quarantine. Is this a big moment down there . How is it being received . Theres a big feeling of relief here in dallas that about 40 people have been released from quarantine or from selfmonitoring. Its very reassuring. It reassures the public again that that risk of ebola can be quite low when you havent had very much contact with an ebola patient. Lots of happy people in dallas. Still watchful or waiting for another hundred or so who have been monitored for a few more days. More cautious optimism, i suppose when you look at the situation in west africa. We know the numbers there are still increasing and thats a cause for concern. However, nigeria dr. Esper, as Infectious Disease specialist, you can talk about this. The president of nigeria said we are ebolafree. We have had no new cases. What can we in the United States learn from that . How much of a victory is this seen in the battle against ebola . Its not just in nigeria but also in senegal where they really with very vigorous techniques and control of exposure and monitoring of those people have been able to stop the virus with not as much not as much infrastructure as we are used to here in the United States. So i find that not only is it very reassuring to me for people here in the United States but it should be reassuring to people around the world that it doesnt take sophisticated techniques to control this virus. You know, its nice to get this good news from senegal and nigeria. Nice to get relatively good news from dallas. Nevertheless, theres still 4,500 people who have died. More than 9,000 infected from ebola in west africa. So theres a lot of work that needs to be done. We are looking at some measures were talking about in the United States, dr. Yasmin. The 21day ung incubation period. Is 21 days enough. Theres some members of congress now, albeit not medical professionals, who say it should be more than 21 days. We have to look at the medical professionals who have been doing this for about four decades now, dealing with ebola outbreaks and safely containing them. So lets look at Doctors Without Borders. They use this 21day monitoring or quarantine period and its worked really well for them so overwhelmingly the science backs this 21day period and we need to reiterate that the 40 or so people that have been released arent stigmatized and people dont fear them. The science says it is enough. Abundance of caution seems like it wouldnt be a bad thing to too old that 21 days. Dr. Esper, weve been hearing about the Rapid Response team, the idea they would scramble to an area that has a new ebola case should one arise within 72 hours. When i think about it, given the way ebola spreads, how quickly it spreads, how highly infectious it is. 72 hours doesnt feel a lot can go on in 72 hours. That doesnt feel like rapid respon response give us your feedback. Certainly we would like an Immediate Response however you have to understand that everyone who presents to an Emergency Department or Outpatient Clinic who is sick is not necessarily all of them going to have ebola. It takes a while for us to diagnose the disease before we can respond to the disease. One thing you can take some reassurance about is how this virus works. The ability to transmit this virus from person to person gets higher the sicker the patient gets so when the person first shows up with symptoms, similar to what happened with mr. Duncan and his contacts in dallas. They were, posed to him when he was just starting to have symptoms. Thats not a lot of virus in his body. However, the sicker you get, the more you get bed bound, the more you get critically ill like what happened hen he was being cared for in the intensive care unit, then youre teeming with virus and then you can spread that virus easier. So the first 72 hours after you get start having symptoms, when you are calling for this Rapid Response, theres still probably in a very low amount of virus so that if spread if person to person, while not zero, isnt goings to as high as when theyre in the intensive care units. Thats explains why the two nurses were sickened. Dr. Esper, dr. Yasmin, great to have you with us. Hope to have you back again soon. Well, if you believe the mayor of hammond, indiana, this is a person who was openly and intelligently speaking to investigators and have told them from the time friday evening when a young woman named africa hardy was found. Her body was found a motel 6 in hammond, indiana. He then specifically and exactly led them to other bodies in nearby gary, indiana. Four different locations, all women. And it sounds like three of the bodies, three of the victims were in one single place. The other thing that is going on, though, is that the mayor also saying that some of hes reporting that he killed people 20 years back. It is not clear whether some of the victims that they found now are from 20 years ago or if there may be other victims out there. This is the most upsetting and horrifying tale. First of all, these seven women, who were they . And wouldnt somebody have reported them missing at some point . Africa hardy we know since shes one of the few that have been named, shes from colorado. She may have been pregnant. Thats been reported a couple places. We dont know that for sure. Some of these women may have been prostitutes as well. People on the edge of the margins of our society, unfortunately. Often times people like this prey on individuals like that. After five weeks of searching, police in virginia think they may have found the remains of College Student Hannah Graham. A Police Search team found a skull and bones scattered across a creek bed just about eight miles from where she had last been seen. Authorities still have to get forensic tests back to know for sure. The parts were found near a pair of black pants similar to the ones graham was said to be wearing when she disappeared. Stayed positive, stayed upbeat, we were here for a mission and that mission was to bring closure and were hoping thats what weve done. Joining us once again, forensic pathologist cyril wecht. Its so glad to have you help us understand these developments. The dna tests have not come back. Tell us how this lines up in terms of the investigation. Well, i think the homicide detectives were considering this as a possible Death Investigation from the very outset given the circumstances of this young girls absence but in a sensitive fashion they referred to it as missing persons. Its a Death Investigation of somebody considering where the bones were found, that this is most likely not an accident, suicide or natural death of somebody. So its a Death Investigation of that individual. From a forensic anthropological standpoint now with the skull, theyll be able to make an identification quite soon, most likely this young woman, Hannah Graham, would have had some dental work that can be compared to the dentures of this skull, the anthropological features of the skull can be ascertained. Is it a young caucasian female and so on. The black pants maybe will yield some dna evidence, too. Possibly the bones themselves if theres some cellular components will lead to dna identification of ms. Graham. The examination of the bones by themselves will not establish a link to the suspect in this case. There may be some dna of his on the pants but youre not going to get his dna from the bones. Cyril, this is a grim discovery by definition and unfortunately i think a lot of the questions people have about it are equally grim and grisly. We mentioned that a skull was found, bones were found. Its just five weeks after this woman disappeared. How do you get to that state where its just bones that are found . Youre quite right. It is a relatively short period of time. Were talking five weeks. However, i dont know the temperatures in virginia during that period, but we have some fairly warm weather here in pittsburgh. I think it was much warmer there. And, of course, exposure to the outdoors. Then you have and i dont mean to be insensitive or crude but you have animals at play in a wooded area, too, that can contribute to the loss of soft tissues. So skeletonization could occur in this fiveweek period considering all of those factors. In any event, well soon know. They wont release it, im sure, right away but i guarantee you its not going to be long before they can determine whether or not these are the bones of ms. Graham. I am certain she must have had some dental work and along with the anthropological topographical anatomic features of the skull. That identification can be made. And then the link back to the 2009 case of ms. Harrington and the rain case of another young woman in 2005 that fortunately didnt result in a fatality. Maybe forensic links well, there wont be any forensic links but links to another nature back to the sexual assaults of two women in 2002 and 2003. If it turns out that this s this guy that for these 12 years that we know of and victims possibly that we dont yet know of, this is going to be a significant serial killer also. Cyril wecht, thanks so much for being with us. Appreciate that discussion. Its a tough discussion to have. Grim and grisly, but they are important questions. One of the workers on the front lines on the ebola site has just returned to atlanta. Hes a friend of the show. Sean kaufman has been treating on folks in liberia. Sean joins us from atlanta. Sean, we got some milestone type news here in the United States. Those first people have been released from quarantine here. Theres good news about the spanish nurse. Theres good news about a medical worker in norway. Were desperate for good news from some of these west african nations. You just returned from liberia. Any sense that the situation there is getting under control . Well, i do. I see a lot of good things. I see a lot of coordination. I see a lot of folks and resources starting to make their way over to liberia. So i do think were starting to see some good signs that we are paying attention to the things that need to be paid attention to. You know, one of the things we talked to you about was, you know, the proper precautions. Weve been talking to you about the cdc guidelines, the protocol, et cetera. One of those things, one of the aspects of the protocols is this return. That people have been overseas, like you have, what happens when they return from the socalled hot zone. Give us an understanding of what youve been doing, even the precautions youve been taking, monitoring yourself, what it was like to leave that area and what kind of process happened to you on the way out. Well, the reality is is we need training at all levels and not just training to go over there but really in essence training from when we come back as well. Ill tell you, its good to be home. Its great to be home, but being home means that i have some responsibilities. And i have to come home responsibly which means that every single day i have to assess myself. For the next 21 days i have to make sure that i dont have a fever. And not only that, after assessing, i also have to take a look at my behaviors. I have to make sure that, listen, if i have a fever i have to act responsibly. I wont just show up at a hospital. Im not just going to integrate myself into a community. Ive got to act responsibly by isolating myself and making sure people have a plan when and if i do. And one of the things ive seen coming home, and im starting to get nervous because i think weve hit a panic button in the states. I wish we had this type of panic overseas. I wish we had people in liberia responding the way were responding here in the United States. But i think its fair also to communicate to people. Look, my risk in the Ebola Response is fairly minimal. I was training folks who were not infected with ebola. The folks that i did see with ebola were at a great distance. So my level of risk was very, very low. But that doesnt mean that everybodys going to be perceive it as low. So i have to not only assess myself everyday, but beknave a responsible way and finally communicate to people where ive been and what ive done so they have the right to make a decision thats best for themselves. You brought up the issue of panic here in the United States and im wondering if you could clarify what exactly that is. Is pan tick schools that have closed because someone might have come in contact with someone on a plane flying with one of the ebola victims . Look at what Harvard University Just Announced its doing a few hours ago. Theyre asking people to basically check with the university before traveling to these three nations in west africa. Theyre saying that possibly they will ask people to stay away from the school for 21 days when they return. Is that panic . Well, panic to me is you shut down a whole cruise because you have somebody whos sick. Or, like you said, you shut down schools. Theres a difference between a healthy respect and an unhealthy fear of ebola. And quite honestly, we really at this stage in the game harvard is trying to coordinate its efforts. They know they have some of the most respected professionals in the country that will probably lebed a hand in this battle with ebola so theyre just trying to coordinate because they dont have recommendations coming from the top and thats one of the things we need to have. So i think that harvards doing the best that they can with a healthy perspective. But the reality is, is folks, if you have not been around someone sick with ebola and you have not been around high quantities of fluid, look, the soccer moms that are worried today about their kids catching ebola at school, its excessive. Its panic. Youre right. Sean, thanks for that measure of just perspective. Also glad to talk to you now youre back home. Im sure you want quality time with your family who have missed you. Welcome back and stay in touch with us, okay . Thank you so much. What i love about sean kaufman is he puts in the perspective. Theres plenty of things to worry about in terms of the response to ebola, but theres also plenty of stuff that is silly to worry about. If youre scared of the wrong things, youre not paying attention to the right things. Were going to emerge in stunning new details in the shooting death of teenager Michael Brown. Built for business. New revelations about the shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. The New York Times is reporting fbi forensic tests reveal that browns blood was found in officer Darren Wilsons Police Cruiser and on his gun and on his uniform. These findings could back up officer wilsons account of the story that brown tried to grab his gun during that incident in august. The news is not going over well with everyone in ferguson, missouri. Some activists say the information was leaked to the times in an effort to justify browns killing and convince the grand jury not to file charges against officer wilson. Our sara cider joins us now from ferguson. We know this is his first account. Weve been waiting to hear his side of the story. Im curious to hear how that news is being receivered in that community. Well, whats interesting here is this is the first time were hearing about forensic evidence from a federal source, according to the New York Times. However, its not the first time that weve heard his side of the story because during the first week, this is the story police basically put out to the media and the population and they sort of went through. So this isnt the first time protesters have heard this story. However, it is the first time theyre hearing about forensic evidence. And heres where the dispute is everyone agrees that something happened at the police car, that something went down, whether there was a struggle or not. What is different here is who the aggressor was. The police say the aggressor was Michael Brown who tried to go for officer wilsons gun and thats what weve been hearing from officer wilson in this case. But the other witnesses there and the friend of Michael Browns, Dorian Johnson has said repeatedly that actually the aggressor was officer wilson who rammed his door into them, who opened the door and hit them and then they turned around and reacted. So theres a lot of discrepancy between what were hearing from those who are close to Michael Brown and from the police. But certainly this has heightened things here in ferguson. People very worried about what is going to happen. Both people hoping theres going to be indictment and others hoping there is not going to be an indictment. Certainly its brought out more crowds in the evening when the protests tend to get bigger, michaela. Sara, help me understand the forensic evidence and why it would help one side or another . Well, look, if the forensic evidence forensic evidence tends not to lie, right . Witness testimony tends to be all over the place. A lot of times with witness testimony there are differences in what people saw, there are differences in what people say. So the forensic evidence is going to be very key to this case. John . All right, sara sidner for us in ferguson, thanks so much, appreciate you being with us. Ahead for us at this hour, he has not yet even started and already his critics say his appointment was a mistake. Were talking about the ebola czar. Is this politics . Next. We dont need another white house political operative which is what mr. Klain has been. What we need is president ial leadership. The person who needs to be on top of this is the president of the United States standing up and leading it as a Public Health emergency. The new ebola czar ron klain gets to work and thats how hes being greeted by some people in washington. There are some critics like senator ted cruz who say president obama should have picked someone with medical experience or Public Health experience. He doesnt want to be called a czar, he wants to be called an Ebola Response coordinator. Good luck with that. The white house said they didnt want an ebola expert, they wanted an implementation expert. Joining us, sally kohn and doug heye who served as chief of staff to eric c cantor, he hasn unloaded his briefcase and the haters gonna hate. Is this really that much of a surprise that no matter what choice with less than three weeks to the election its not a surprise at all. Even beyond that. Whatever the president chooses there will always be somebody who says wait, this was too political. Lets put this in context. Republicans introduced a bill to ban obama from appointing czars. They thought he was appointing too many of them. Then suddenly when hes not appointing a czar around ebola theyre clamoring for a czar. It is, again, the symptom of hes darned if he does and darned if he doesnt and boy do i wish i could use stronger language for that on air. Clearly hes being an employme an plemt station expert. Nobody questions ron klains qualifications for but the president wants him to act politically because hes down in the polls and in Key Senate Races like my home state in north carolina. This is a political problem and people hear hes not a doctor and hes political. Those arent great terms for american voters. Theres politics with a big p and a small p. Theres politics that deal with campaigns then theres the politics of washington and what goes on inside government. Youve been inside government. Doesnt it help sometimes to have a guy who knows how to operate and knows how to get things done . There are plenty of doctors around. Sure. But you know we were talking before the show. There are ways you can do both. I think a great pick would have been former senator bill frist, a lot of experience in health care obviously but also health care in africa and how hospitals work and dont work and no republican and probably no democrat would have criticized a pick like this. But this is purely a critical inside pick because the president has a political inside problem. Well, look, i think he picked someone whos an implementation expert. If he picked one sw eed someone going to overrule the doctors on the ground republicans would have criticized him for that. Its a baitandswitch thing. The larger problem here is we need this is a Public Health issue. It is not a crisis. More people have been successfully treated in this country than not and we havent had any new outbreaks since weve been stepping up care. Whats important here is this is being constantly politicized. We need to make decisions about trusting the doctors, trusting our Public Health experts and not constantly second guessing everything and gaming it up for politics which is all thats happening. Thats dangerous. Real quick, just because we can, you know, lets talk about the twitter sphere. The newest member of twitter. Did you hear the knewest news with the twitterer handle Monica Lewinsky . When i saw she logged on twitter for the first time, she had a thousand followers. I checked ten minutes ago, she 10,000. Shes growing faster than ebola and is probably more of a threat. I welcome her. That is the best monosica lewinsky twitterer joke youll hear all day. And if you didnt think it was a lowest common denominator form, twitter, now we will peru. It weve heard from her already in vanity fair, shes going to be out there in public. Does it make a difference . I think it will be interesting to see how she engages, in truth. People know, anyone, any public figure out there speaking their mind on twitter knows the kind of hate and vitriol they get. Its especially true for women. What is she going to do with it . Well see. Doug heye, sally kohn, great to have you with us. We have a big political moment coming up on cnn tomorrow night. Every now and then i get a little bit hungry and theres nothing good around turn around, barry i finally found the right snack [ female announcer ] fiber one. For the past week, several of us here at cnn have been sharing our journeys to discover our works. And today we have kate bolduan who traces her roots to the land of palm trees to belgium. This is her story. I know nothing about my family. Im sure my grandmothers will be horrified when i say that, but i literally wrote so many different stories about where my family came from, when they came over. It seems more important, actually, now having these answers and being able to fill out that family tree now that were about to start our family. So to start the search through my family tree i sat down with ancestry. Com historian michelle erkenbrock. Were going to talk about your grandmothers mother on your moms side. Okay, my grandmothers yes, she was the first generation to come into america from belgium. She died in 1981, just two years before i was born. This is felicie flood, 5585 ottawa river i think thats my grandmothers address. Are you serious . Is my grandmother living at my great grandmothers home . Wow. Thats amazing. First line of this ive already learned so much. The next thing well look at is her fathers name was leon. And he came over in 1912. So the date on. So the date on this document is february 1912. There he is right there in the manifest. Yes. This is the vessel that they came over . Yes. And he was 28 when he did that . Yes. With just that start of my family tree in hand, we, of course, had to take the journey overseas, 3700 miles to liege, belgium. Where my great great grandfather and great great grandmother lived before leaving everything behind for america. Thanks so much. Very excited to get started. First stop, the liege state archives where this historian found everything from marriage records to baptismal records dating back to i could have ever imagined. I will show you another tree that i made for you. I will show you this. Are you knocking my ipad tree . No. This is felicie born in 1910. That is my great grandmother . Yes. And it goes from left to right, young to old. Oh, my goodness. Really . Yes. This is the oldest one. He died in 1625 and he had a son in 1596. Its still amazing. My oldest known relative baptized in 1596. Thats eight greats. Yeah. Before landing in belgium, i also discovered what my ancestors did for a living. Can you make out the occupation . Oh, wow. It does say he was a glass blower. So he left behind his wife and is headed to columbus, ohio. And they even found a street where the family was known to have lived. So we came to this street. It still exists. And youve already made my connection. Yes. And a wellknown Family Living there, the house next to the pharmacy and there was a famous Glass Factory. It was up the stairs 50 meters away. The house right next to the pharmacy . Yes. And number 26 is where they were living and the Glass Factory was on a small street up there. Lets have a look. And with a little more investigating, we learned that the Glass Factory was only recently closed and torn down. Ten years ago, the factory was still here. Weve been able to see where my family is, maybe the street that they lived on and the factory that they worked in. The biggest lingering question, though, is what was behind the huge decision after so many generations to take that leap of faith, get on these ships and travel all the way across the ocean to start a new life in america . So we headed north to antwerp. He showed me the place from where my ancestors set sail on the red star line. How much would a ticket cost . In money today, between 500 and 100,000 euros. For a oneway ticket in third class. So that correspondentd to 65 da of work. A huge commitment. I knew my great great grandfather traveled to america in february 1912 but theres more. In april of that same year, the titanic sank. Yes. A few months after, one of the most catastrophic, nautical events in our history still to this day, leon puts his pregnant wife and 2yearold daughter on the boat. You stop it right now. Im mad at leon right now. I cant imagine. They are right here. I mean, i cant even imagine if i wasnt pregnant right now what that would be like. One of the Big Questions that ive had as i come here, why did people want to go to america . Theres not one reason. Everyone went for a certain reason. I think the main reason is that they were all looking for a better picture, trying to build a better life. I think thats what they were trying to do. To begin that american dream. And it all began right here. I have no idea what our family went through to get on the boat even before they started the voyage. It makes me proud.
