Fast. Its government wants the u. S. To step in and help. The latest twist in the republican political upheaval. The speaker of the house will make much anticipated comments, and its happening right here this hour. Have you planned your 90th Birthday Party . This is what the president , the former president , george h. W. Bush is going to do to celebrate. Hes going to leap from a plane this hour. More of a bungee jumping kind of a guy. Thats quite a birthday. Im john berman. And im michaela pereira. First the breaking news out of iraq. Islamic militants are closing in on baghdad. This was just some of the fighting as armed radicals seized several key cities. Iraqi forces that were traine e by the u. S. Simply ran. They melted away. They dropped their weapons and ran in the face of this onslaught. Now, keep in mind more than 4,000 u. S. Troops were killed fighting in iraq. The longterm financial costs of the war to american taxpayers, thats expected to exceed a trillion dollars. So obviously, it is alarming to see these kinds of advances by the militant group, the Islamic State in iraq and syria, or isis, happening just three years after the u. S. Withdrawal from iraq. Our Nic Robertson covered the war extensively from the front lines. He joins us right now from neighboring jordan. Nic, weve got to ask you, iraqs army says it has won back the city of tikrit. One has to wonder if the military is now stepping up and taking on these insurgents, and do they have the might . Reporter they certainly, in theory, have the might, but pictures tell what a thousand words cant tell. The government is saying that yes, its forces have retaken tikrit. What we have seen released apparently by isis, this is a propaganda video of theirs. What is, they claim, in tikrit their fighters rounding up what you see, lines of iraqi policemen and Security Forces that these handful of isis fighters are leading away. These all look like beaten men. So its not clearly not a case of do they have the weapons and have they had the training. Its a case of wheres their morale . Wheres their leadership . And at the moment, michaela, whereas they should be able to dominate the battlefield, right now it appears as if theyre being cowered, and were not giving entrance into the country. One of the reasons is i dont think that here in the u. S. And u. S. Officials know quite what to make of the current Iraqi Government. There is a lack of trust right now between the u. S. And the iraqi leadership. How do you think that contributes to the hesitancy right now of the Obama Administration to get involved . Reporter well, you know, if youre going to come in had and back a government, you want there to be a government. N Nuri Al Maliki is a very divisive figure, sectarian. He pushes the agenda of the shia majority, and that angers the sunni minority in the country. We witnessed that today. Today there was supposed to be a meeting at the parliament where the parliamentarans would get together and vote on a state of emergency. A lot of parliamentarians didnt show up. They voted with their feet. And that is an indication that there isnt support for Nuri Al Maliki and the country. Hard to see an outside interest, the United States, wanting to back such a failing Prime Minister in these circumstances, john. In that political turmoil in baghdad happening as city after city falls. Nic robertson for us over the border in jordan, thanks so much. Of course we know the situation is something that the u. S. Is looking at and keeping an eye on, given the fact that our troops withdrew from iraq some two, three years ago. The white house says its looking at a range of options to stop this terrorist advance in iraq. We want to bring in our political commentators ross and Maria Cardona. Good to have you both with us once again at this hour. Ross, why dont we start with you. The Iraqi Government has already indicated a willingness for the u. S. To conduct airstrikes. The big question, though, is given the fact that we withdrew our troops from there, given the fact that weve put an end to u. S. Involvement in iraq on the ground in terms of military force, is it smart . Is it wise . Is it something theyll have the backing of the American People to go in and support them here . I think the American People will be very dubious. I think that frankly, if the Obama White House stood up and said this isnt our problem anymore, theyd probably have 55 or 60 of the American Public behind them. And the reality is, as i think weve learned, the maliki government has been asking us for airstrikes for a little while now, before this offensive started. And we have been resisting. Partially, im sure, because of the politics and partially for more strategic, that as you guys have just been saying, you dont have a government there that its clear that we should be supporting. Unfortunately, the problem is youre heading for a situation where youre ending up with what would amount to another terrorist safe haven across the northwest of iraq shading into syria where isis has obviously been sort offer gai ingathering strength during the syrian war. Its a nogoodoption situation. And its just what some people have feared for a long time, this safe haven being created across the border between syria and iraq with these terrorists now roaming freely city to city. Maria cardona, there are people who predicted Something Like this might happen when the Obama Administration chose to withdraw all of the troops from iraq back two or three years ago. People said it was too much too soon. Are these the consequences now of that action . Well, i think that that still remains to be seen. Its way too early to point fingers because frankly, lets remember what the president did in iraq was what he had talked about doing from the moment that he started campaigning and what the American People were with him on, which was to end the misguided and illconceived war in iraq. And frankly a lot of people could point to the nakt we went in there in the first place, that this is a consequence of that. In terms of withdrawing all of our troops, lets remember that this president , this administration tried to cut a deal with the Iraqi Government to leave a cadre of u. S. Forces behind to frankly prevent or try to prevent, at least, what is going on now, and they refused to come up with that kind of deal. So there is there is a lot of discussion that needs to happen now clearly moving forward. I think we need to talk to our nato allies. I think we need to talk to turkey. Everything needs to be on the table to figure out how to move forward and prevent this from becoming a further humanitarian crisis. Ross, maria, were going to ask you to stay with us. Obviously one of the conversations, too, is as we look towards the withdrawal in afghanistan, this is going to make people think about that and what that future is going to hold for that country and for the world. The vacuum is what a lot of people say. Well have them stick around. Were going to talk about the aftershocks. Everybody likening it to a seismic event in washington. Could eric cantors defeat in the virginia primary signal a change in the Republican Party . And then the other side, what could it mean for democrats . Well have that conversation with maria and ross coming up. Great rates for great rides. Geico motorcycle, see how much you could save. Lactaid® is 100 real milk . Right. Real milk. We want to bring you live images of something that you might be finding interesting. The man at the center of all of this seismic shock, an earthquake sent through washington. We had a chance to catch up with him. Were talking about dave brat, the virginia primary winner, overturning cantor in a surprise election result. We had a chance to catch up with him here on cnn. Lets take a listen. I am not ignoring you. And i respect you guys as professionals and everything. I will be out, but i need awe f a few days to decompress after that election. So i just need to spend a couple days with the family. Ill be with you as soon as i can. Just so happy with the skrout come of the election. I literally have 1,000 emails and voice mails. Im just trying to catch up on everything. Okay. Nothing you want to say about the future of the Republican Party . Im im just humbled that the people spoke. And i think they want a new direction in washington, d. C. And so if they think im a part of that, im absolutely humbled by the vote. Thats what i ran on. I just want to meet with people, and so im going to continue to meet with people from now, every spectrum out there in the 7th district. And ill do my best to stay true to the pledges i made. I want to meet with constituents in every in every county, the nine counties in the city and do my best job to represent them, and thats my pledge. Thats what im going to do. Okay. So in case you were wondering what it feels like and looks like to be at the center of the political universe, that was it right there. Dave brat, just wants the chance to decompress a little bit after doing what has never, ever, ever been done before, defeating a House Majority leader in a primary, knocking off eric cantor. This sent shockwaves throughout the Republican Party around the country. Now, we are expecting, in just a few minutes, House Speaker john boehner to hold a News Conference. This will really be his first chance to talk about this Seismic Shift in washington. And we are awaiting what he says. So lets bring back in our political commentators, ross and maria. Ross, were waiting to hear from Speaker Boehner in a few minutes. What do you think he needs to stay right now . What do republicans not just in washington but around the country want or need to hear from him . Goodness. I mean, i i dont think this is a moment where theres really that much that john boehner personally can say. I mean, this is obviously, in a sense, a repudiation of in a sort of narrow singledistrict way his leadership team. But i think that all that he can say is sort of some version of message received. And i think that whats fascinating, and you heard it sort of listening to brat talk is that people are just scrambling to figure out what the message is because nobody had paid any attention to this race. People are sort of just digging into the kind of campaign that brat ran and so on. And so far i think the best answer weve come up with is that brat ran as a sort of full spectrum populist. That hes obviously a libertarian, a smallgovernment conservative and so on. But all of his attacks on cantor were related to sort of, you know, big business and Big Government colluding, accusing cantor of personal corruption. When he talked about an issue like immigration, it was framed in terms of big corporations wanting to bring in lowwage workers to drive down wages and so on. So thats, i think, ultimately how the republicans and ultimately the democrats as well need to address this, by recognizing that they need a Stronger Economic message. But for this moment right now, i think it would be probably a big mistake for boehner to try and make some kind of sweet statement of how the results of an election that nobody completely understands yet. Well have to wait and see. Were waiting for that to happen a little later. Of course, criticism coming that cantor spent too much time focusing on washington and not enough time with his constituents. Maria, i wanted to ask you about the flip side. The democrats, meanwhile, one could say theyve barely hidden their glee with what happened to cantor. Some of them havent hidden it at all. One has to wonder, will this make the president s job harder . Oh, absolutely it will make the president s job harder. And frankly, the tea party and everyone who has supported brat has been very unequivocal in terms of what they want him to do, which is to come here and do nothing with this president. And i actually do think that there is something that Speaker Boehner can speak clearly about, and that is he can tell the American People that the House Republicans will actually not come to a grind and do nothing. Because if thats the case, if thats the expectation, michaela and john, why should they even come to work in the next six months . And that has been the translation of this dave brat win. And i hope its not true because, for example, on an issue like immigration, i think people will be surprised to hear that in cantors district, 70 of the people actually support doing something on immigration. And so for the republicans to take away the message that they should do nothing on immigration, they should do nothing to work with this president is the wrong message. So i hope that the American People dont believe that now republicans in congress are drenched in tea and drunk on the caffeine of obstructionism because that would not be good for the country. That was amazing. That metaphor win goes to Maria Cardona on that point, leaving us speechless. Im not so sure Speaker Boehner is anxious for your advice, though we love having you here this hour. I think youre right about that. Ross, great to have you as well. Good to be here. Thank you guys. As we mentioned, Speaker Boehner is going to speak at this hour. We expect him to address eric cantors loss and his decision to step down as House Majority leader at the end of july. We will bring those comments from Speaker Boehner live at the bottom of the hour. Ahead this hour, weve got something really incredibly exciting and delightful. Former president george h. W. Bush, hes 90. So what do you do when you turn 90 . How about jumping out of a plane at 90 sorry, at a few thousand feet there, just like when he did when he was 85 with our robin meade. We have robin to explain to us what its like to leap from enormous heights with the former president of the United States. Stay with us. Fill their bowl with the meaty tastes theyre looking for, with friskies grillers. Tender meaty pieces and crunchy bites. In delicious chicken, beef, turkey, and garden veggie flavors. Friskies grillers. We dont do birthday shows on this hour. Can we make an exception . Lets do it. Shoutout to former president george h. W. Bush. He is 90 years old today. Happy birthday, sir. And hes going to celebrate by skydiving. Thats right. He jumped from 10,000 feet over kennebunkport, maine. He did land just moments ago. We are awaiting that picture. And rest assure, we will bring it to you the minute we have it. Absolutely. In the meantime, we have something even better. Even better . Even better. Hlns robin meade joins us. Robin has gone skydiving with the former president , some of that not many of us can say. She went skydiving with george bush for his 85th birthday. Robin, he said he had one more jump in him. And i guess he did, right . You know whats funny . So we dont have that worry tape yet, but let us show you from five years ago what it looked like. I bet this one looked pretty much the same because he did jump with the same guy. He usually goes tandem with one of the armys Golden Knights. And this is he did it when he was 75. Then he did it at 80, 85 and now 90. Isnt that amazing . But he did say after this jump that he was going to do it again when he was 90. Im not going to hold it against him because we had made a pact that if he did it when he was 90, i would get to go. You know, if he was a little forgetful when youre 90, you can be that. You can be forgetful. I got the chance to do this with him really im not sure exactly why i was chosen to be the only journalist. I think it had a lot to do with the Golden Knights because they had asked me previously to go jump with them. Our Legal Department kept saying we dont think thats a wise idea. Oh, man. So basically i said to the Golden Knights, come up with a story idea that i cant say no to. Well, boy, did they ever. And its kind of like i joke, i would never jump in real life, but with a former president and one that, you know, has a history as a world war ii veteran and had a reason for jumping that first time, he wanted to jump on his own volition, not jump out of a plane like he had to in world war ii because he was being shot down. So i said yes. How could you say no . You jumped at the chance, if you will. Look, i have to talk to you, i mean, i have so many questions like why you would jump out of a perfectly good airplane. Exactly. Right . But you also had a chance to chitchat with him beforehand, i can imagine, and sit down and interview him. What do you remember most about that time with him . Its funny because i joked that that interview saved my sanity and my life because if i didnt have the interview before the jump, i would have been able to focus on the jump and go, what the heck am i doing . But instead i was focused on what i want to ask him, how do i make him feel comfortable and get at the essence of this man . I was impressed with really how dialed in he still was at 85 to the political process. But how strongly he felt about stepping back and letting the person thats in the Current Office lead. And i think thats still to this day. You dont really see either bush 41 or bush 43 speaking out or against about what the current leader is doing. And when i asked him about his legend, like what do you think your legacy is going to be, he was, like, eh, let the historians talk about that. At the time Sonia Sotomayor was going through hearings to be justice. And he didnt like some of the statements that were being made by people on radical sites. He didnt feel it helps the process. And he spoke out about that. So i was very impressed about how engaged and sharp he still was in the process. I love that. This is a man right now who is having about the best victory lap ever. Oh, come on. He was sick. It was about a year ago he was so sick. Since then he has just done so much and put so many smiles on peoples faces, including his own. Robin meade, thank you so much for being with us. I love seeing the president do this. Girl, you are much braver than i am, let me just tell you that. I would never do it in real life. Well, that was real life. For television, ill do it. You jumped. You jumped. I dont know if you have theres still photos that ive given you and your producers that i think say so much about the man behind the scenes. If you dont have it, ill tell you, for example, right there, thats a surreal moment when we landed, and he was really joyous, and we shared that hug. But during the press conference, you know, there he is with bush 43 and former governor jeb bush and barbaras there. And instead of answering the questions, they said, well, ask robin. Shes right there. So like i became a part of the press conference. You could really see the giving and together nature of the family. Theres one more shot where im doing a live shot. And theres a black car. And it pulls up behind me, if you guys have that still photo. We saw it, yeah, there it is. There. And so theres this grey poupon moment where this black car and a shadowy figure emerges. Its george bush 41. And he says hey, robin, were getting ready to have cake and ice cream. Why dont you and tim and he remembered my husbands name, pretty impressive why dont you and tim come back to the house . I was, like, well, mr. President , im working. He said, well, then you come over the next morning to walkers point. And so my husband and myself spent saturday morning at kennebunkport sitting on the back porch in the sun with 41. That is one of those pinchme moments. If the skydiving adventure wasnt already. Robin, it has been such a delight to chat with you about this memory and this occasion on the former president s 90th birthday. Again, bush 41 he took another sky dive on his 90th birthday. Well bring those pictures to you live when we get them, actually. We should also point out that you can watch our cnn special bush 41 this sunday at 9 00 p. M. Eastern. A very special episode of that coming up. Robin, thank you. Thank you guys. Its a good thing we dont do a show together, because we would be chatty and talk we could chit cchat about a w things. We would never do commercial breaks, would we . What are those . The was a truly amazing day. Without angies list, i dont know if we could have found all the services we needed for our riley. We want to show you some pictures from texas. They were provided by a congressmans office. It kind of looks a bit like prison cells stuffed to capacity. But those people that are sitting there, yeah, theyre not criminals. Theyre kids. Theyre kids who have crossed the border into the u. S. Illegally without their parents. Some of them are as young as 5 or 6 years old. Every day hundreds and hundreds arrive. They cross through mexico originally from honduras, el salvador, guatemala. Now officials are running out of space to house them. This is a serious, serious crisis. Paula sandoval joins us from texas. Paula, let me ask, why are so many children doing this . Why are they crossing over . How big of a problem is this . Reporter i can tell you, michaela and john, it is a major problem. And before we dig a little deeper into the actual issue here, i want to show you how hundreds more are expected to cross. Really its a large portion of the border, but this is just one way that so many people cross. Not only men and women but also children by themselves. Were standing here next to one of the portions of the border wall here along the border, the river about a mile south of where we are. Many of these people eventually walk down one of about six gaps along this segment of the road. And before you know it, you have access to this open road. You see cars drive by on a regular basis here. This is where a lot of these families, unaccompanied kids are flagging down people, trying to get a ride. And lately really its Law Enforcement. All these people that potentially cross illegally want to get caught. And this is the major change here for this portion of south texas. Its now perhaps one of the biz jest regions along the border. Yesterday we were out driving the border with several Law Enforcement officials. And we encountered two specific families. It was our first real facetoface interaction that we had. One of them was a honduran woman. The other guatemalan. Both of them had their families. The woman from guatemala, she brought her 15yearold son and also her 2 1 2yearold little girl. Both of them completely sweaty. This is late at night. But nonetheless, covered in grass and dirt. And a lot of them really struggling with their emotions to be able to share their story with us. They told us a little bit about what they were fleeing, and that really goes back to the question is why so many people right now. Basically our takeaway is there seems to be an opportunity that they are trying to take advantage of, or at least theyre trying to use to their advantage to potentially stay in the country. A lot of these people in Central American countries hope that eventually theyll get a free pass if they make it onto u. S. Soil right now. Guys . Polo sandoval telling an excellent story and a very important story, putting the politics aside, theres concern about the wellbeing and safety of these kids kind of between two countries now. Well ask you to update us on further developments. We want to go now to washington because House Speaker john boehner is set to speak. Really his first Public Comments since this political earthquake when House Majority leader eric cantor lost in a primary. This is something that has never happened before. We want to bring in chief Congressional Correspondent dana bash and Senior Correspondent jim acosta. Yesterday he was holding these closeddoor meetings with House Republicans. And today we do expect to hear from him. What kind of message do you expect to hear from the speaker . Reporter well, first i should tell you that hes expected any second. And im right in front of the podium. So if i move while im talking, youll know why. The answer to that question is, look. He made it clear, we know behind closed doors, in the meeting that House Republicans had, he was trying to be very complimentary of eric cantor, talking about the fact that he personally knows what its like to get ousted from a job that you want because it happened to him maybe about 15 years ago. But he also is making clear that its time to move on. I think the key that we need to focus on is when he set these leadership elections. Its very fast. Its just going to be next week. That is a very strong signal that he wants this to be over and done with. He wants this leadership and this party in the house to unite fast so that they can focus on what they need to, which is november. And im actually going to sit down while i talk because i see John Boehners aides coming, which means that hes very, very close. Maybe you want to go to jim while we wait. So jim, well interrupt. Reporter danas in charge. Interrupt. Just interrupt when you know that the eck spooer is about to speak. She makes a good point about the fact that they want to make this quickly, but the effects are going to be felt for some time. Its going to have this trickledown effect within the party. Reporter it absolutely is. And were going to have to see how the leadership elections shake out up on the hill to really gauge what the reaction will be over here at the white house. My sense is is that they would probably like to see a Kevin Mccarthy rise to majority leader as opposed to perhaps a harder edge to conservative tea partybacked contender for that position. And so well have to see how that shakes out. One thing that we can point out over here at the white house, michaela and john, is that almost immediately, the reaction here he is. Jim, i think we just saw the House Speaker right there, john boehner. Lets listen to what he has to say. Reporter all right. Sounds good. And thank them for their service for our country as well. And theres no one around here that works harder, puts more thought into advancing our principles and the solutions that we want to enact for the American People. I look forward to him continuing to lead our floor efforts here over the summer. As for the future, let me share a little bit with you, what i told the members yesterday. This is a time for unity. This is a time to focus on what we all know is true. That the president s policies have failed the American People. His administration cant get our economy back to real growth, and he continues to endanger our troops and citizens with his failed foreign policies. And on this point, the administration cant even provide basic services to our veterans. We need to elect a congress that not only has the will to stop the president but the power to do so as well. Every day were showing the American People that weve got better solutions. Today, well act on two more jobs bills that will help Small Businesses invest and grow. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats continue to sit on their hands and failing to act on the dozens of jobs bills that are sitting over in the senate. But guess what . So long as the American People continue to ask the question, where are the jobs, were going to continue to be focused on this one issue. I said on tuesday that transfer of five hardened terrorists has made americans less safe. And i mean that, and ill stand by it. When asked last week whether the freed terrorists could return to plotting attacks on americans, president obama recently said absolutely. Well, i dont think thats about half of it. This exchange has encouraged our enemies and increased the risk to our military and civilian personnel serving around the globe. Those who would argue the opposite, i think, are incredibly naive. One of our citizens greatest protections was knowing that the United States does not negotiate with terrorists. And that issue now that principle has been compromised. America is willing to make deals with terrorists. Thats the new obama doctrine. Back in january, i urged the president to get engaged with whats going on in iraq. And this week weve seen big cities in iraq overrun with terrorists. The Obama Administrations failure to reach a status of forces agreement continues to have serious consequences from iraq and american interests in the region. And the administrations failed policies in syria, libya and egypt and his failure to implement a broader strategy for the middle east is having a direct impact on the situation in iraq. The United States has and will continue to have Vital National interest in iraq. But the progress made there is clearly in jeopardy. The president hassell broughted our exit from iraq as a hallmark of his Foreign Policy agenda. But our focus should be instead on completing our mission successfully. And i would urge the president once again to get engaged before its too late. [ inaudible ] your side benefit greatly from the tea party in 2010, part of that volatility, but what do you attribute to this where it seems the wind blows ill let the political pundits describe and figure out what happened in that election. Every election is different. I went through a primary process myself. And you have to understand, the American People are being squeezed by obamas policies. The economy is not growing. Incomes arent growing. Were not creating enough jobs. And twothirds of america see no increase in wages, but their food prices are going up. Their gas prices are going up, and their Health Insurance costs are going up. And so theres a lot of frustration thats out there, and they look to washington and wonder why we cant we cant resolve these issues. Theyre hard to resolve when youve got a president who wont engage. [ inaudible ] obviously youve got a threeway or fourway process, are there certain things that you felt you had to do . I ran my race in a way that i thought i should run my race. But im not going to analyze that race down there. You want Kevin Mccarthy to be House Majority leader. And also how important is it do you think for unity in your conference to have a redstate republican at the leadership table . Well, i do think that the members are going to make this decision. Were going to do it next week. You know, im sure some will argue its too soon. Some argue it was too long. But its important we resolve this issue in a fair amount of time so that we can do the work that we were elected to do. And so the members will make the decision about who the next majority leader is. For you, i mean, you talked about how important it was to have eric cantor at your side. Do you want Kevin Mccarthy at your side . Listen, ive worked with all 434 other members of congress before. I can work with whoever gets elected. Speaker boehner, the issue at hand, mr. Cantors race, immigration, a lot of people are saying Immigration Reform is dead because your conference will not move for fear of what happened to mr. Cantor . Let me first debunk the first thing. I dont believe the first premise of your question. Secondly, the issue with Immigration Reform has not changed. The president continues to ignore laws that he signed into law, violating his oath of office. He did it again with the release of these taliban five. And i reminded the president again yesterday that every time he does this, it makes it harder to gain the trust of our members to do the big things that need to be done around here. Are you worried about immigration as an issue in 2016, then, if its not going to happen this year . The president s going to have to demonstrate that he can be trusted to implement a law the pay it was passed. Said that the people who think [ inaudible ] the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff signed off on this deal on National Security. Do you think hes naive . They are dead wrong on this issue. Releasing these five people, negotiating with terrorists is a principle that we have not violated. And now weve violated and weve put americans at risk as a result of it. Speaker, what message do you believe that voters were trying to send washington in this election . Was it a message at all . No. Im not again, im not going to im not going to analyze what happened in this election. Theyre all different. So im sure at some point people are going to handle around what really happened. Surely you must have a takeaway. Eric cantor can be brand ed as amnesty. [ inaudible ] we dont know that that is the issue or was the issue in the election. On iraq, do you think the u. S. Should be launching airstrikes . And if not, what should the u. S. Do . Well, i think what we should do is to provide the equipment and Technical Assistance that the iraqis have been asking for. I dont know enough of the details about the airstrikes to comment whether we should or we shouldnt. But its not like we havent seen this problem coming for over a year. And it hasnt its not like we havent seen, over the last five or six months, these terrorists moving in, taking control of western iraq. Now theyve taken control of mosul. Theyre 100 miles from baghdad. And whats the president doing . Taking a nap. Wow that was House Speaker john boehner there. A lot just happened including something at the end. Lets deal with the issues first, dealing with eric cantor who just lost his primary race, the first House Majority leader ever to lose. He said pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Dont look at Republican Issues right now, infighting. Its all the president s fault. He tried to turn the focus back on the president s policies, saying thats the issue here that the American People want changed for how that relates directly to eric cantors loss, that remains to be seen. But there was something very interesting that just happened at the end there. There were reporters asking Speaker Boehner about the crisis in iraq. And the speaker was very critical of the president , essentially saying whats the president been doing while this is happening . He said hes taking a nap, and then he stormed off. Lets bring in our jim acosta. Some really sharp words. Obviously all of us are watching the situation unfolding in iraq, and its getting quite dire. Theres increased violence. It sounds like isis is make says its way towards baghdad. Theyre claiming theyre going to overtake baghdad. And the question is what is the u. S. Going to do . Boehner has made it clear that he thinks the president needs to be engaged. Reporter absolutely. And you know, john just took the words out of my mouth. That struck me as being really, really heated, what the speaker there said just before he left the room when he said the president s been taking a nap when it comes to iraq. I can tell you from talking to Administration Officials all morning long that at this point, the white house is not looking at airstrikes. They are looking at a range of options. They always say theyre looking at a range of options, but at this point theyre really focusing on providing military assistance to the iraqis. And so, you know, there is a real reluctance on the part of this white house remember, this is a president who campaigned on getting the country out of iraq. Hes going to be reluctant about getting the country back into iraq in any kind of capacity that involves troops flying over the country, dropping airstrikes on positions in iraq and so forth. And so yes, the president has been briefed on this crisis that is undergoing right now, taking place right now. But at this point, theyre just not really at that juncture where i think that theyre going to say yes, lets do airstrikes. Now, all of that could change depending on how dire this becomes. But as you heard the speaker say just a few moments ago, theres a real sense up on capitol hill among republicans, at least, that they are just not satisfied with whats happening in iraq. Lindsey graham and john mccain were on the senate floor just a little while ago. John mccain called on the president to get rid of his entire National Security team and bring in a new National Security team. So i think this is definitely a preview of coming attractions for the day ahead, guys. Lets go to dana bash who was at that News Conference with Speaker Boehner just moments ago. Dana, very clear the speaker tried to shift the focus from whatever republican turmoil there might be on capitol hill to other issues, specifically the very, very Strong Language about white house policy in iraq right now. Reporter oh, no question about it. Look, this is something that nobody can ignore. And when it comes to iraq, this is not a new situation, that republicans have had a lot of opposition to the president s policy, primarily the fact that he pulled all combat troops out of iraq from the minute and before that happened, republicans almost across the board said that that was a mistake. That if you leave the country, that this kind of thing is going to happen. Violence will erupt. Al qaeda will take key cities. He didnt say i told you so, but he might as well have said that. And as you heard from jim, other senators who have been incredibly vocal, senator mccain, senator graham, those republicans have been out there as well. As you said, this is a huge issue. It is not going away. But theres another reason that the speaker talked about that, is because he wanted to move on from the internal turmoil in his own party. Thats going to happen for the next week here in the house. He certainly did. And pointedly with Strong Language. He was very on forceful in the way he did it. Dana bash, jim across that, thanks for sticking around with us to watch the comments from john boehner. Again, its almost like pay no attention, as you said, to the man behind the mirror. Were going to talk about this. Were going to take a short break here this hour. More coming up. Are the largest targets in the world, for every hacker, crook and nuisance in the world. I want to take you back in time to the fall of 1963, to the home of jacqueline kennedy, started arriving in small towns and stationary, more than a million and a half condolence letters addressed to a young jackie kennedy. She was 34 years old, just 34, already a grieving widow with two young children. Letters, so many offered sympathy and prayers. Now, 50 years later they provide a glimpse to what president kennedy meant to the nation in those days and weeks after the assassination. A history professor from the university of New Hampshire and author of the book letters to jackie, condolences from a grieving nation. Ellen, what a joy to have you here with us today. Im so curious about these letters, who are they from and where did they come from . What part of the country and what was her response like getting those letters . Theyre an incredible collection of letters. They came from every state in the union, from little towns, from big cities, from people who are living in abject poverty, to very wealthy people who had been friends of the kennedys. The nation really poured out its heart to this young widow in the aftermath of her husbands death. I think we know from an appearance she made shortly after her husbands death, her first public appearance some six or seven weeks later, when she thanked the public for what had at that point been 800,000 letters that she had received that she was deeply moved by them and wanted the letters to be kept in the president s library so future generations of americans would know how much her husband had meant to citizens in the United States and really around the world. The number of letters and the scope of this really says so much about the country itself, the impact that president kennedy had while he was in office and, of course, the impact of the assassination had on immediate days and weeks right after. It was absolutely overwhelming. John f. Kennedy was really our First Television president. He was young and perfectly suited to the medium. He was handsome, had a beautiful wife, two adorable children. They were covered in a very gentle way compared to modern media coverage. The norms at that time were really quite different. People felt they knew the Kennedy Family in a very personal way. They felt very connected to them, in part, because they were our first televised president ial family in this way. Kennedy, of course, married masterful use of mass media in his press conferences, people often mentioned those in the letters, they enjoyed his wit and sense of humor. They felt an affection. Many people said they felt as if a member of their own family had died when president kennedy was murdered in dallas. I want to get another thought from you quickly. This is the public side youve been talking about the president and his wife. Then theres deeply personal stuff coming to the news lately, these letters jackie apparently wrote to an irish priest suddenly yanked from an Auction Block where they were originally going to be put up for auction. First of all, where do those letters belong and who should have access to them if anybody . Those letters i think belong in the john f. Kennedy president ial library with mrs. Kennedys other papers. The president ial libraries, as you know, are part of the National Archive system. In due course of time, her daughter has been opening mrs. Kennedys papers for researchers and scholars and for individuals who are curious and want to read these materials, to come to the libraries and to be able to contextalize these letters in the context of the rest of her life and activities. Thats where they properly belong. They belong in fact the copyright to those letters belongs to her daughter for 70 years after the death of mrs. Kennedy. Its her call. Ellen fitzpatrick, thank you so much for being with us to talk about these letters and history. So fascinating.
