this hour. We begin with horrific new developments in the case of more than 200 girls who were abducted at gunpoint from their boarding school. A man claiming to lead the terror group that kidnapped the girls in rural nigeria last month says hes going to sell them. The statement came out a short time ago. It says there is a market for selling humans. Allah says i should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women. I sell women. We go to the nigerian capital. I think this claim of responsibility is not a surprise but it is certainly brazen in defianc defiance. If the face of something so offensive and outrageous, what is the government there going to do . Reporter you know, thats the thing. Its so offensive and so horrifying when you hear the words from this boko haram leader saying proudly that he did abduct 200 plus girls almost three weeks ago and his intention is to sell them and claiming that allah says he should sell them. Its nauseating. Its horrifying. One can only imagine what the parents and relatives of these girls are enduring right now. What will be the governments response . Thats the question really that we have as a Media Organization and everyone else in this country. The president in nigeria spoke in camera about this situation on sunday. First time he had spoken on camera about what happened three weeks ago. While he expressed confidence in his Security Services saying they will find these girls, he said they dont know where thir. He doesnt know where they are after three weeks. They are using helicopters and aircraft to scan the area but didnt admit in public there were any leads that they were going on to know where these girls are. Its a troubling situation. Thats long been the case. To have this catape come out no takes the fear and concern to a whole new level. There is lack of urgency in the voice of the president. Were lucky to have you there. Well check back in with you as soon as we can. We want to bring in a World Affairs columnist for the miami herald and World Politics review. So good to have you with us. We know this seems to be this tape seems to be the first public confirmation from this group, boko haram, that have the girls. We know that boko haram means western education is sinful. Tell us more about this terrorist group and what we know. The thirst thifirst thing tho mind they would call western education sinful but kidnapping and raping and selling these girls is not wrong. They want to impose islamist rule with this ultraextremist interpretation. What these people are against is girls getting an education. That shocking in itself. The crime kidnapping them repugnant. The response though, or lack of it, for three weeks now over the last few days weve seen the response on social media. Bring our girls home. Happening on twitter and facebook here in the u. S. And abroad. What can be done at this point outside nigeria to help . This is an outrage. Its a scandal. Its a tragedy above all. It has taken three weeks for the world to Pay Attention to this. The people who want to put pressure on the Nigerian Government and International Community need to call the Nigerian Embassy and call the state department and call the white house and keep this in social media on the local media. The Nigerian Government is behaving so irresponsibly that they are interested in reputation of the country and reputation of the president. They did not care about this until the International Pressure came down to bear. Im glad to see cnn doing an excellent job putting a big crew there to cover this. Im glad to see this at the top of the hour top story. It should have been the number one story in the world for the last three weeks. There are those here stateside that said if this happened in america, it would have been the number one story. Why do you think it is there hasnt been the attention on this story . More than 200 girls are stolen away in the dead of night. There isnt an international outrage. This is going to call for inspection in the media, at cnn, all over the world for political leaders, diplomatic leaders. Why is it when something happens in africa, when something happens to people perhaps well stay away from ethnic considerations, we need to focus right now on the fact that these girls as we speak are being held captive. The ones who escaped told us about repeated rapes with knives to their throats. This is something happening right now. The top concern right now has to be to get them out and we need to look at the urgency of maintaining education availability for these people. I think one of the reasons the world didnt react more quickly is in nigeria, the government didnt seem to react with any urgency. How possibly can that be justify . Its even worse because in fairness to the rest of the world, the government of nigeria announced incorrectly they freed most of the girls on the day after this happened. Many of us just thought this crisis had ended very quickly. Thats not the case. The government of nigeria has complicated issues. They have limited resources. Biggest economy in africa. Wants to put focus on growth and prosperity and it cannot just ignore these situations. These crises. Its a terrible situation. Thanks for joining us. We need to be talking about this. We need to be focusing on this. We appreciate your help. Its interesting too. We need to get the girls home but the other side is other schools in nigeria out of fear of this happening to them have shut down classes and thats what the terrorists want. Education to weekend for women and children. A crime to go to school. We take so many things for granted in our country. Lets check other headlines for you. More money and more technology and larger search area. Thats all part of the plan as the hunt for flight 370 enters a new phase. Officials from malaysia, australia and china will meet to hash out the new plan and reexamining the data theyve been gather to make sure theyve been looking in the right place. They say it will be more difficult. One of the key elements of the next stage will be to undertake more detailed mapping of the search area. Much of this area has never been mapped. And so it will require a significant effort for us to understand the ocean floor in that area. Its expected that the capability will be obtained to start surveying this search area over the next four to six weeks. Well bring you a live report from malaysia later this hour. One passenger said it was like a drop from a roller coaster. Severe turbulence injured six people. Five went to the hospital. It was crazy experience. We were up in the air lifted out of our seats and seeing things flying all over the place. All of a sudden we just felt this boom and the plane felt like it dropped 20 feet down. Shoes were flying. Cell phones were flying. People were screaming. It was very, very, very scary. One passenger says he saw a womans head hit the ceiling and actually crack that ceiling. The faa says it will now investigate. Keep those seat belts on. Crews in oklahoma are trying to knock out a wildfire that left one person dead and 20 homes in ruins. It began sunday. It was a small controlled burn but hot, dry air and windy conditions whipped it into wildfire thats burned almost 4,000 acres. At one point 1,000 people had to evacuate their homes. Authorities say the man who died refused to leave his home despite being ordered to leave. Fire officials tell cnn the blaze is 75 contained at this hour. Well have more of this ahead. Coming up for us, is ukraine on the brink of war . Cnn teams in the middle of chaos as prorussian protesters grow bolder and more powerful and the situation grows more dangerous. Back to the drawing board for officials searching for flight 370. Fresh eyes being brought in to comb through the data. Thats all ahead this hour. Those Little Things still get you. Fears of an allout civil war in ukraine are growing after the deadliest weekend of violence since unrest began and now this. Heavy clashes broke out today between Ukrainian Forces and prorussian militants. A cnn team saw one woman brought to the hospital. Her husband said she was shot on balcony. She later died. Our Senior International correspondent Nick Paton Walsh was in the middle of it all and has now pulled back from the city where it is clearly a very dangerous situation. It sounds like it is spiraling out of control right before your very eyes. Reporter over the past week we have seen these two sides test. They were in conflict. As you drove into town, the Ukrainian Army were advancing and prorussian militants are reinforcing their positions. Clashes broke out. We saw armored cars and then the procession of ambulances. We counted the first bringing in the woman who you talked about earlier. The woman taken inside the hospital and her husband said she was on the balcony when a bullet hit her. She died of that injury. A prorussian militant brought in in a bad condition. And another two walking wounded trying to shrug off shoulder wounds they had. A town in shock here. Most streets there are barricades and a lot of angry civilians out there. The prorussian militants sohowd us a civilian car shot up by military forces. Ukraine says they lost four soldiers in this clash and have Just Announced one of the helicopters was shot down. Clearly now things around slavyansk turning to all o out conflict. We saw a map before the clashes started about how they are encircled with groups of military around their town and theres no chance of negotiation and one message he said to us is he wanted to ask barack obama to stop sending military assistance. The white house is not doing that but its part of the misinformation war going on here making it harder for this situation to be calmed. And misinformation as you talk about and then we see this escalating. We see the situation growing. The violence is spreading. Struggles continue. Were not hearing any breakthroughs in negotiations at all. Where is this all headed . Two important dates ahead. First, the 11th of may is when prorussian militants say theyll have a referendum on the sovereignty and thats whether or not they join russia or stay in ukraine and then may 25th president ial elections for all of ukraine. This unrest is bound to continue through all of that. Russia says potentially they will move in if they see lives at risk here and white house says they will face more sanctions. All of that failure diplomatically will feed greater volatility on the ground. Nic robertson outside of slavyansk. The violence could escalate. The hope is that would deescalate but its going the other way. People like the circus because people take chances and risks. Many are questioning whether those risks are worth it. Eight acrobats plunge 25 feet to the ground in front of horrified spectators. Its known as the human chandelier. Performers were hanging by their hair high above the crowd when the apparatus holding them somehow failed. One acrobat on the ground was also injured and we just found out this morning that eight people are still hospitalized. Two of them in critical condition. We want you to watch it happen here. We have to warn you the video is pretty graphic. They were hanging by their hair. All of the girls hanging by their hair and then it just falls to the ground and the big metal thing above them hits all of them on top of them falling from the roof of the center. I screamed. Thats not right. Sometimes youre surprised and its part of the show but this clearly wasnt. Clearly wasnt. Really a shame. Were joined at this hour by two guests who know the circus world inside and out. Paul is founder of big apple circus and author of never quote the weather to a sea lion. And we have a veteran circus performer with his own story about a terrible circus accident but paul, lets start with you. You spent a lot of time in the business. Ever seen anything quite like this . No. Indeed when you think of the millions and millions of circus acts in any given year that happen, this is a very unusual event. It appears to be a rigging failure because the apparatus fell. You suffered an injury yourself in something called the wheel of destiny. I wonder if you can tell me how this happened and talk to me about the dynamic here at work. Obviously the circus is about taking chances. The circus is about making things appear dangerous. So to a certain extent, arent accidents like this at some point inevitable . Well, my accident was a lighting problem. It was an issue that i had and i couldnt see properly and eventually i missed completely and came down about 50 feet. That was myself and i couldnt believe what happened to myself. In the circus itself, we are entertainers and love to perform for the audience and dangerous acts for a lot of folks they see them and say my god, something is going to happen. Most of the times these acts are practiced and practiced over and over for years. They come down from generations and generations from family members telling us what to watch out and how to do this. There are a lot of mechanics to take care of our mistakes to avoid falling from practice. So accidents that happen are very rare in our circus life because we train so much to practice these acts. Training and doing things over and over. Thats part of it. That makes you a profession circus performer. I wonder if you train for mistakes . Are there Safety Measures and drills that performers might run through. What is the policy for safety . Safety is always the first consideration when you do any kind of dangerous act. Surely at ringling and big apple circus. Were focused on that. Our hearts and prayers go out to the young lady in this accident. There was a Facebook Post this morning by one of them saying they are all okay and all conscious and talking to one another even those in critical condition. But its an awful situation. And it appears to be a rigging problem. Something went wrong. The apparatus with that weight on it fell. What does this do inside the Circus Community when you all see a tragedy and mishap like this . Our Circus Community is family based. We dont know the ladies because they came from another country. We all pitch in. We know how it feels like myself. I know how it feels to fall and my experience was when you clap your hands really hard one time you feel tingling motion like ants in your hands is what i felt for about eight to nine months. My whole body. Now practice with performers training themselves for mishaps, yes. Absolutely. High wires will try to fall from a low from the ground low to catch themselves from the wire and they have to know how to come back on top of the wire. Also flying trapeze have to know how to fall into the net. Unfortunately like this occasion it seems like it wasnt fault of the acrobats. No net underneath them to catch them or safety mechanism to kick it to prevent it from happening. Thank you so much for joining us. Ringling brothers reacted. They say the apparatus used in this performance is inspected often. We dont know exactly what the cause of the accident was yet. Were cooperating with local providence officials and occupation safety and Health Administration to determine what went wrong yesterday because we want to make sure that an accident like this never happens again. More money and more technology and a much larger search area all part of the plan. Officials from malaysia, australia and china will meet wednesday to hash out what to do next. Lets bring in will ripley. In addition to mapping, they are also going to reexamine all of the data that they have gathered. All of this satellite information and all of the pings to make sure they are looking in the right place. Reporter you know, john, its the same team that was here in the days and weeks after the plane first disappeared. They are now going to head to australia to see if they feel this is their best guess. Its an educated guess of where the planes flight ended and if its in this correct area. Its important they do that when you consider the amount of time and resources the International Team is about to invest there. Up to 12 months and 60 million. Where does the search stand so far . Give us an update on the area thats been covered. Reporter let me put this in perspective. The bluefin21 has done 18 missions so far covering just 154 square miles. This newly expand search area, 23,000 square miles. So clearly theres a lot of ground to cover. They will meet to figure out the best way to do it. Obviously theyll need to bring in Different Technology to assist the bluefin in this massive effort and it will take a long time. Thats what they seem to be alerting us to. It will take time. Obviously some patience. Thank you so much, will. Lets bring in our aviation analyst. Mary, ill start with you. Theyre not sure if satellite information has been accurately interpreted. Let that sink in for a second. Does that surprise you or frustrate you or confound you . Well, mostly it frustrates me. It doesnt surprise me because it was a limited amount of data. It was new application that they hadnt done before. They wanted to get the bluefin in there and start looking. They thought they put bluefin in to search in the best place. Now that they have time and pulled bluefin out and are back onshore, they have time to reconsider and people now realize theyre in it for the long haul. This is a good thing is. They want to make sure theyre looking in accurate places and not waste any resources and be efficient in what theyre doing. A lot of people said they should open the books here. Let the world see. Open source to a certain extent this satellite data so they can get the best minds around the world weighing in on if its actually accurate. I think theres good and bad to that. There are some things you want to do that with and some things you dont. When we got information from the north arc up there, turns out it was a bad lead. Theres nothing up there. Bangladesh went out and couldnt find anything. At times you have to manage your resources. Its really best what theyre doing right now is smart. Regroup. Surprised they havent brought more specialists in. They reached out to our Investigative Community and a few of my friends on the teams that were in have been contacted to be just provide information. They havent enlisted them yet but they are reaching out and looking for new information. Thats a good thing. Its frustrating for many people and most frustrating must be for families. Someone over the weekend because everywhere you go people talk about this mystery of this plane. Someone was likening it to me to a Police Investigation that has gone cold. Its not unusual for detectives to go back and look at all of their evidence and data to look over it again to make sure nothing was missed. If you look at it that way, it doesnt seem unreasonable at all, does it . It doesnt seem unreasonable at all. When you are an investigator, you want to challenge yourself and go back and see if you have the right assumptions. Its part criminal investigation according to malaysians to see if there was foul play involved in the disappearance of the plane but also a civil investigation. A Civil AviationSafety Investigation and people are used to more openness and they are used to being able to have complete access to the data and our own ntsb makes a public docket and uploads it for the world to see. Thats part of the frustration for the families too. Its not what theyre used to. I think after this meeting on wednesday they will understand that for proper care of the families, theyre going to have to be more open. Give me a sense of what the new technology is theyll deploy under water and how soon they can get it. Its not quick. Its not at all. There is only about two or three available. There is one in germany right now and u. S. Navy has one but its obligated right now. Its not like they can just pull these off the shelf. Theres more than just the equipment. Its the crew. How do you manage those crews . What are they looking for . Theyve been asked some people i have talked to said they want us to just bring our tools and well search where they want us. Thats not how it works. You have to really plan that. Its part of your tools. Its like hiring a mechanic saying can i borrow your tools . It doesnt work. The fact that they are in canberra right now is important. Thats where the cabinet is held. Thats strategic. I think for them to be there, the cabinet has to approve more money so i think thats a really critical piece that we need to look at is to where the tools will come from and who will pay for them. Great to have you with us. Thank you so much. Really appreciate it. You probably cringe every time you have to pay them. Im talking about baggage fees with the airline. I feel like its bad news and ill have at that wear my clothes on my body when i go on a trip. Break down the numbers for us. Its bad news, isnt it . Reporter these are new numbers from the department of transportation about the profit that u. S. Airlines made in 2013. U. S. Airlines werent that profitable a few years ago, these fees helped. In 2012, airlines profited at 98 million and in 2013, that jumped way up to 12. 7 billion and baggage fees alone were a quarter of that at 3. 3 billion. So well break it down by some of these airlines and the biggest aggressor is delta air lines. 833 million for delta last year in baggage fees. 624 million for united. Look at this. Us airways at 527 million and american at 505. If you put those two together as you know, they merged. Thats over a billion dollars in baggage fees alone and then Spirit Airlines at 211 million last year. Now, Spirit Airlines is special. They add up lots of different fees to make their profits. Heres the answer to all of this for you. You know this all too well as i do from the campaign trail a few years ago. Carryon. If you overstuff your carryon they have to gate check it for you any way and then they dont charge you. Thats the answer. Its hard to get around the man when it comes to baggage fees. I will tell you, a friend of mine, a former colleague, would fedex his bags to a location because they didnt want them to get lost and they were tired of all of the fees that they were having to pay. I might as well pay to have them shipped ahead of me. At least seats are comfortable and plenty of leg room. Its justifiable. And then you eat that foot onboard. You can pay for extra leg room. Another fee that they get you for and changing reservations got the airlines 2. 8 billion last year. If you have to go on a friday instead of a thursday, theyre going to get you for that too. So when we got like a quarter down the road, hes like, thats my van right there. And it says puppies for free. So i was like, okay, i could take one home to my son because unfortunately his dog had passed away. So we get in the backyard. And i really didnt think nothing of it until, you know, we got into the house. Thats when it dawned on me this was a mistake to get in this car. You knew by then this is wrong . Yeah. And then i ended up being trapped in a small room, small pink room. Thats where he proceeded to tie me up like a fish and put me on the wall. You said tie you up like a fish. What do you mean . My legs and hands were bound like this. And i was that far from the floor. Its horrible. All those years ago. Its so horrible to hear this. The fact that they young woman survived that. Were joined now by dr. Gale salts. Best selling author. Always a delight. To talk about these things and help us. Always understanding. Do you think its going to help michelle by opening up this way . I no know she really wants to help other victims. There are a couple of things that help people who have gone under terrible trauma and it has to be driven by them. So for some, it is talking about and replaying, reunderstanding their story. And for some, thats very healing. Obviously, shes driving this. And so i think, you know, yes, you could expect that would be helpful. The other thing is, as you pointed out, helping others. So for some you see this often when someones undergone something terrible, they often start an organization, theyll get involved in some way, in helping other victims. And that is a way of, you know, its called is subblemation, tag something thats happened terrible to you and help someone else. Its a way of healing. I would think yes. I would also say the timing of one year here is important. Because the first year that you go through each thing, a birthday, a holiday, something significant with family that is after the trauma is usually extremely difficult. And you have sort of these reactions, including the oneyear mark of an anniversary reaction. So around this time, you would expect might be extremely difficult for her. But perhaps for her being able to talk about it, being able to release her book and feeling that she is helping others would be potentially healing. Lets talk about the others here. If youre a survivor of something awful like this and there are way too many people who are, what do you see and what do you take from this . Well, i think shes trying to portray the resilience, the idea that even if youve gone through something terrible, a, you can survive and, b, you can recoup your life. And i think shes trying to be a model of that, to show that shes still enjoying her life. The truth is, some people wouldnt be able to do that. She is able to reengage. She is saying that, you know, she is enjoying the small moments . She is functioning. She is, you know, putting out this book. She is financially surviving. She has others rallying to her and being supportive. Theyre not shunning her. I think all those are really important messages for survivors of trauma. Gale, is this something i know it differs from person to person. When someone goes through an ordeal like this, a trauma like this, is this something that they can get past or is it something we pray thats not the case for anybody whos gone through Something Like this. Front a professional point of view and not knowing her specifically, i would say the answer is both, you know, some people are going to be able to be resilient enough to keep going with their life and find joy and function and participate in meaningful ways that make life very worth living for them. But that doesnt mean that theyre over it. In other words, you know, the likelihood of, say, if she wants to have an intimate relationship and have trust and those kinds of important things, you know, the likelihood is this will stay with her in some form or another. Doesnt mean, though, she hasnt somewhat overcome it. We dont understand resilience fully yet. Right, right. Clearly, some people are more predisposed than others. Some people really wouldnt be able to recoup their life. I think having support is very important. Doctor, thank you so much for being with us, talking about this.
