First. Hello. Im michaela pereira. Im john berman. Those stories and more at this hour. Were beginning with Major Development out of australia right now. A sheet of metal with rivets is being examined as we speak. The big question is it a piece of wreckage from flight 370 . Thats what authorities are trying to figure out. The socalled object of interest was recovered today on the coast of Western Australia about 186 miles south of perth. Meanwhile, deep in the indian ocean, the high tech submersible drone is completing the tenth underwater mission so far. Its found nothing after scanning 80 of the search area. Just a short time ago, malaysias government announced its forming an International Investigation committee. We are in the process of identifying the members and their accredited representatives and recruiting members for the team in accordance with international standards. Well announce the name of the members next week. It is imperative for the government to form an independent team of investigators which is not only competent and transparent but also highly credible. As i have said since the beginning, we have nothing to hide. The big news this morning the socalled object of interest. This piece of metal now being examined so carefully by officials in australia. Were joined now live from perth. After 6 1 2 weeks of false leads, conflicting information, one twist and turn after another, i know authorities are being very, very careful. What are you learning about this object. What are they telling you . Reporter hi, john. We understand that it washed up onshore about 190 miles from here. Were still trying to get more information about how exactly it was found and who exactly found it. We have been talking to the head of the australian transportation and Safety Bureau and that they are analyzing photographs of this object that he described as a metal sheet with rivets. Another Australian Defense source telling us that they are currently looking at this and it appears to be fiberglass coating described as kind of rectangular but torn and misshapen. It was sufficiently interesting but he added a note of caution saying that the more they look at these photos, the less excited about this find they are. We understand from the australian maritime and Safety Authority that they are bringing it to perth for further analyst. Erin, lets talk about the weather. Its been an issue. We know that cyclone stirred up wind and waves in the area. Bring us up to speed on the Aerial Search and whats being conducted under water. Reporter thats right. We know they had to suspend that Aerial Search due to the adverse weather conditions. Not clear on how that affected the bluefin21 today. We know from the transportation minister it wrapped up the tenth dive earlier this morning. No objects of interest found. We also know that its covered over 80 of this very important area, an area they say is critical or most likely to find the black box. Another 20 to go. We heard from the Australian Defense minister today saying that could take another two weeks for them to search that area. All right. We appreciate that. This object of interest that was pulled from the water has been described as you heard erin mention as a sheet of metal with a lot of rivets on it. Could this be a piece of flight 370 . Chad, i want to go to you first. If we accept that this flight ended in a section of the indian ocean thats being searched right now, would it make sense, would it be possible that this piece of debris could are washed out 190 miles south of perth. Six hours i would have told you the current is going the other way. We have gone down on small currents. Not the gyre. A little bit closer to home. Closer to australia, there are some smaller currents. One here that could potentially take where we are now back toward australia and then down here to the leeuwin current. Could it make it . Thats about onemileperhour. 1,000 miles. It could get there. There is nothing this has been the story of this plane the entire time. Theres nothing that we can rule out. We cant say, no, that just couldnt happen. Bluefin going on behind the ocean shield. There are pings here. If is where they believe the plane went down, guess what happened about ten days after the plane went down . A giant cyclone. 160 Miles Per Hour right over the area down here where that plane went. We believe at least if anything was sticking up, that sticking up stuff would have been blown off to the west. Here you go. Theres ping location. It could get into the new current and along the coast of australia. Its certainly possible. 1mileperhour and these crazy currents going every little direction back and forth and back and forth is not like the gulf stream that runs up and down the east coast straight up. This stuff goes every direction. Chad, i think its so important to illustrate factors at play. Cyclone jack was in the area. We know that this contributed to the weather there. We know that the Australian Authorities are choosing their words very carefully and are being very cautious about this debris. We know its in their hands. We know theyre examining it. The more they look at it, the less excited they are getting. What do you make of it . Is that for jeff or mary . Mary. Sorry. You know, theres useful and interesting things about it that sound like a plane and then there are things that arent. Its a piece of metal with a lot of rivets on it. A plane has a million rivets in the wings and fuselage but then the part about fiberglass insulation doesnt fit with the aircraft. They are big insulating blankets. They are acoustic insulation. They are thermal insulation and they are water resistant. That would suggest it would help it float but theyre not fiberglass. So some of it sounds like an aircraft part. Some of it doesnt. Its like everything in this investigation. Like everything in this investigation indeed. Jeff, twopart question. Your general reaction to this piece of debris and what you think it might be. Interesting what mary says is jermaine. It doesnt match up with what we would expect to find. Its interesting that a couple weeks ago they were looking for surface debris near where the plane went down and now so many weeks were expecting to find pieces widely dispersed. If its in the social as yocean said, we expect to find pieces over a wide area. Officials said that a month ago. Six weeks ago. They said at some point in this investigation we could very well see debris wash up on the shore somewhere. We would expect to. Presumably if this hit the water with any force at all, you would have many, many pieces sort of shotgun blasts all over the ocean and with these currents as chad shows us, they pull things in every direction. After a year you could expect to find things on the other side of the world. Mary, what do you make of this notion that the malaysians announce theyre forming this international team. 46 days in do you think they are bowing to the frustration and criticism and pressure . Well, i think they are. Again, the question is they should have set this up a long time ago. Committees they set up are the typical committees you set up to investigate after an air crash like what ntsb does. They make International Committee should and as a direct result of the distrust of their work and their secrecy but then the same time they did that they announced they wouldnt make the preliminary report public. There goes the trust and transparency. Talking out of both sides of their mouth for sure. A special kind of transparency for sure. All right, mary and jeff, stand by to answer questions from our viewers. You can tweet questions to us. Chad, great to have you here explaining currents and whats at play. Will ripley is covering the story from south korea. They are still calling it a rescue operation . Reporter they are at least for now. We know the diving continues 24 7. Divers going down searching areas of the ship looking for survivors and for bodies. They didnt find air pockets in the area of the ship believed to be full of passengers. We also know theres equipment in the area ready for the transition to a salvage operation. The u. S. Ship on standby if needed. Cranes that would be used and ships surrounded the perimeter with nets to catch any bodies that may drift away from the area. No air pockets on the third and fourth level. In that cafeteria, which was news that broke here yesterday on this show, will, they reached the cafeteria where they expected to find bodies, they found nothing. Where are they searching now . Reporter it was a surprise to the searchers who thought there would be passengers that would be in that cafeteria. So now that they pretty much covered the third and fourth floors, they move to the fifth floor to see if perhaps people were trying to get out of the lower levels of the ship and might have gotten stuck in there. That is what we understand is happening right now. Word coming out the Ferry Companys Owners Office and home have been searched. What are authorities looking for . Theyre looking at different angles in this investigation. The office specifically evidence of was there too much cargo on this ship . Did they sign off on more than the ship could handle . In the next few days, well talk to other entities to look at possibility of increasing the assets for the next phase. The time line i have to discuss but it will not be in the next few days. What is more important is that the search continues and this is an assurance that well give to the families of the passengers. That was malaysias acting transport minister confirming more assets may be added in the next phase of the search for flight 370. Not a single piece of debris has been confirmed but questions now about whether that could be about to change. We stress could because a sheet of metal with rivets washed ashore on the coast of Western Australia about 186 miles south of perth. They are calling it an object of interest. We know that its been photographed and being examined and tested as we speak. We want to bring in our cnn analyst. Hes an ocean search specialist and professional expedition leader to talk about all of this. Good to have you with us, rob, at this hour. Flights, we know, first of all postponed for a second day because of stormy weather. There was a Tropical Cyclone in the area a month ago. Another cyclone in the past week might have kind of whipped up the waters and the winds and potentially debris. How much of an effect does that have on an expedition such as this . Well, you know, any surface storm, anything that whips up the surface of the sea place havoc with operations. We have already seen bluefin delayed on one mission because of that. As winter approaches, we will suffer the same kind of setbacks. In terms of the debris, were a long way into this now and i think that youll start to see the search for debris wind right this morning the report of debris washing up ashore in australia will wind up on a coastline somewhere and thats the tangible clue as to where the airliner might be. Bluefin is 80 done searching underwater in that search area. Youve been through searches of this nature before. You know, its always possible. The bluefin searched 80 of its assigned area and other areas it may be assigned to. When you use side scan sonar you are beaming sound through the water to collect imagery and any time the platform vehicle makes a turn or has to adjust altitude to avoid collision with terrain, thats when you can get gaps in the data. It is important that the data thats collected is reanalyzed by a fresh set of eyes to make sure nothing was missed and if it was, go back to blank spots. Hopefully theyll do that. Malaysia transport minister says they could add further assets in the coming weeks. Divers are not finding any air pockets where they believed they might be. Thats where they hoped they could possibly find survivors. They pulled more bodies from the wreckage. 157 so far. 145 people are missing. Authorities say there are still many rooms left to search. Back onshore the criminal investigation is picking up steam. Authorities have arrested more crew members today. That makes 11 total arrests including a captain. The people looking through the wreckage are risking their own lives every time they get in the water. The sunken ferry is a giant Obstacle Course with danger around them and divers are navigating all of that in the dark. We want to talk about that with a maritime recovery and salvage expert. Captain, we know youre following this very closely. We know you have friends and colleagues who are out there involved in this search. Based on your expertise and based on what you hear for them, explain to me what theyre doing right now. First, its good to be with you. So theres over 600 divers i understand involved in this operation and its complicated because some of them are government divers. They do have at least one commercial Diving Company involved and then they also have volunteers so they have a mix of diving technologies that they are using out on the site. That makes the operation quite complicated. The depth of the diving is reasonably deep. So that also means that different technologies are brought to bear at Different Levels and different depths in the ocean so give them time during the search. But between the depth and the cold, these divers are not spending very much time on the bottom. I dont think people quite realize that. They will go down and depending on where theyre at in the ship, they may only spend 20 or 30 minutes down inside the wreck. So what they do is they establish actual lines, downlines. As they get into the ship they extend these lines further and further and remember they cant see anything inside the ship or very little. It looks like visibility has improved a bit but even with their lights on their hats and their lights, they cant see their hand in front of their face so they are working by feel and they work along these lines and that helps them to know where they have been and where they havent been before. They dont want to put themselves in danger as well obviously given whats under there and the challenges of working in that kind of wreckage. Im curious if you can compare for us the Costa Concordia experience you have and you have a cruise ship versus a multiuse ferry. It had Cargo Capacity as well. Talk to us about the difference between the two ships and having to dive into that wreckage. I think they are quite different actually. The Costa Concordia was not fully submerged. The divers there were 32 casualties which i shouldnt say only but compared to this incident fewer casualties. The similarities are that any time a diver goes into a wreck underwater, youve got to understand that absolutely everything has come apart. The furniture, the wall coverings, the ceiling panels, wiring comes down. Its an absolute choked maze. Thats similar between the two. Theres an incident that happened in 2008 in the philippines, it was also a ferry, the princess of the stars, and in that incident over 800 people were lost that we were involved intimately involved in that incident. In that incident i will tell you that these divers you have to actually be very careful to sort of restrain them because they become so emotionally involved in what theyre doing theyre willing to risk themselves to recover these victims. Im sure. Deeply committed to their jobs. Captain, quickly, whats the point when you shift from trying to recover bodies to a salvage operation for the vessel itself . How do you make that decision . Thats a tough decision to make. So were still in the rescue and recovery phase. Obviously the divers are not finding air pockets although this ship is a maze so there still people hold out hope until the very end because, you know, the odds are stacked immensely against these folks but so much of it depends on a persons individual will to live. There was an incident in nigeria not too long ago where a cook spent two days in a small air pocket well down below the surface quite deep. So its not out of the question but its very difficult. What will happen is recovery effort will slow down, the number of bodies the guys are able to recover will start to fall off. The government will make a decision that the best way to continue finding victims is actually to start the salvage operation. Captain, obviously they are hoping for a miracle but at some point they do have to assume the worse and move on. Great to have you here and your expeeepertise with us. We talked about the ferry captain and crew members that have been arrested but we want to point out the heroes onboard. One was a 22yearold crew member. The Ferry Company transferred her to the doomed boat six months ago. Witness say she handed out life jackets and helped passengers escape as the vessel went down. She put others first sacrificing her own life. Without people like her, the death toll would have most certainly been higher. You can check out her story at cnn. Com impact. Its just a fact. I dont know how it could influence the investigation but they just give the answer its under investigation. Its not an answer. Just an excuse. An excuse not an answer. Families of flight 370 continue to be cynical. Thats one way of putting it. They continue to be furious at malaysian officials. Australian authorities believe they or say they found an object of interest in the search for the plane. They describe it as a sheet of metal with rivets in what appears to be fiberglass coating. Lets bring in mary and jeff. Well talk about the object in a moment. Mary, as a former investigator, we talked about this again but it bears repeating. Would there be any legitimate reason why the malaysian officials wouldnt release the raw data to search families . This object of interest, australia released the information. They didnt have to. But they did. Right. Theres no reason because in a criminal investigation especially since what the malaysians said they would investigate if they are investigating and have a criminal investigation going, they were looking at hijack, sabotage or personal issues with the pilots or another personnel onboard. None of those have to do with aircraft performance or registration numbers. The questions with things with pingers and performance of pingers under water. Questions are straightforward and things they should know the answer to already. This far into the investigation would have been things you would have answered the first week of the investigation. The commitment to transparency is perplexing to say the least. I want to ask you a question from a viewer, jeff. Face it, they havent found any debris and they havent found a plane. They need to go back to the northern arc and look on land. I dont believe the plane is in the water. I put this to you. We get dozens of tweets like this and posts like this. People are asking that question. Why not go back to the Northern Area . Five of the 26 questions that families submitted to the minneapol malaysian authorities were explain this to us. The only evidence we have that it is in the south is the say so of the authorities. The malaysian authorities said there was a new analysis and concluded its in the south. We dont know what that mathematical analysis is. Listen, apart from the legal reasons, i think from a human being perspective, to say to somebody your loved ones are dead. The reason we believe this is because of this new math formula but we cant tell you what it is. I find it unbelievable. Mary, lets go to the object of interest that the australians told us they have in their hands that theyre examining. Its described as a piece of sheet metal. It has rivets on it. There may be fiberglass coating. I remember early on, john and i were discussing early on there were voices out of australia saying sooner or later something would wash up onshore. Do you feel confident this could be . Does it sound like debris from an airplane . Well, part of it sounds like debris from an airplane and part of it doesnt. This is what happens after a period of weeks or even sometimes months, the debris starts washing up onshore. This is eventually how they found a plane was parts onshore. They had rewards for people to find and turn in parts. They got 192 pieces. Here we have a piece of metal with rivets. That sounds like an aircraft. Fiberglass not so much because insulation on an aircraft is special thats water resistant and Acoustic Properties to insulate and it has a thermal barrier. Part of it sounds like it could be a plane. This is eventually what happens. Pieces turn up onshore. Theyll be able to quickly determine that it is or isnt, right . That is not a long process . Right. Because the metal part of it would be very obvious. Same with insulation. Well show very soon. Mary, jeff, always a pleasure. Thanks so much. 2. 5 hours is how long investigators say it took for the ferry to sink. Ahead at this hour, a look at the conditions the crew might have faced. In south korea, hope of finding more survivors from the sunken ferry dwindles as divers pull more bodies from the wrecka wreckage. 156 of them with 146 still missing. The tragic accident begs the question could it have been prevented . Rosa flores is in a bridge simulator in ft. Lauderdale, florida. Taking a look at this, maybe you can show us what the conditions were like when that ferry capsized. Well show you several scenarios. Well start in miami, for example. This is what the bridge looks like and what it would be like to exit the port of miami and well take you out to sea so you can see what it looks like. Then the waves and then you can add different complications like weather. If theres a storm out there and the waves are bigger, you can see that as well. And joining me is dave bolt. Hes with resolve maritime academy. So first of all, explain what were seeing here just so we can tell folks what this is. Its a full mission bridge simulator. This is everything that you would see on a bridge of a modern ship. Radar, control systems, everything else. One thing we can do is list this ship at 60 degrees. Lets do that slowly. Well take a few perspectives. Well be able to see not only from the bridge what that perspective looks like. If you are here and you are at this degree angle, you know that you are in trouble. If youre not rolling back the other way you would know you have a problem with stability or your ground or Something Like that. What would you be communicating to your crew . Generally crew members would also know that something is going on and then depending on whether it is grounding or flooding, you have different procedures and things that you train for during drills. If everyone is doing what they should be doing, they would go to a certain place on the ship and getting equipment or helping other people and helping passengers. We also have another perspective. I want you to look at this. This is from a passenger perspective. A second camera if you can take a look at that. At this degree you can see the water a lot closer to the actual vessel where people could possibly be. We also got a very rare look as to what could be happening underneath in the hull. This academy also teaches crew members how to stop water from going into a vessel. If you look at this video, you can see the first thing they do is assess the situation. They figure out where is the water coming from . Then they use basic tools to plug those holes and they told me that in the case of an emergency if you find a mattress, thats how you plug the hole, thats what you use. Coming back to the bridge, we were talking about this. If thats happening and it is a ferry and if it is carrying cargo or course, there are other dangers that you were telling me about. There are other concerns with every cargo and particular concern with a car ferry is if you list far enough and if cars go to one side, if they break from from their lashings and go to one side, that will further compound stability issues. One of the very good thing about a simulator like this is it allows cruise lines that use this on a regular basis to come in and train for different scenarios so they are prepared in the case of an emergency. What a unique perspective to get on that bridge. Really interesting. Really appreciate it. Want to go now to ted rowlands who will tell us with a unique view whats coming up. Hey, ted.
