City after the marathon attack honored at this hour by the president. We will bring it to you live. Hello, everybody. Im john berman. Did you hear his smile throughout that whole read. We have those stories and so much more at this hour. It may very well be the best at this hour ever. Well get to the red sox in a little bit. We can finally tell you word for word what was said between the cockpit crew and air Traffic Control. The night they vanished with 239 people on board. It has taken 25 days to reach this. Thats worth a pause to note. 25 days. Cnn has obtained the official flight transcript. It raises new questions about why the malaysian government initially provided an incorrect version of the final signoff from the cockpit resivising it from all right, good night, to good night, malaysian 370. We are also learning that malaysian investigators are convinced someone in the cockpit or on board the plane was responsible for that sudden turn off course. A government source tells cnn authorities consider the planes turn a criminal act. Then, there is this development. A new wall street journal report saying that search teams were looking in the wrong place for three days, because of poor coordination. There was one group analyzing radar data. The other, the satellite pings. It took them that long to get their act together and actually talk. Today, 20 planes and ships have been scouring the southern indian ocean. This could drag on for a long time. I think at this stage, it is very important to pursue the leads. Ill call them leads. The evidence that is being presented to us. The search area expands more than 46,000 square miles in the ocean west of perth, australia. A search area larger than the state of pennsylvania. I want to get more details on all these new developments. Paula newton joins us from the Australian Air force base outside of perth. I want to start with the transcript. Let me read a big chunk of this. At 12 26 a. M. , they say, ma 370, welcome over to ground. And then good day. Air Traffic Control says, 370, 32r, cleared for takeoff. Good night. The cockpit, 32r, cleared for takeoff. Mas 370, thank you. Bye. 1 19 would be the last time anyone would hear from the plane. Malaysia 370 contact ho chi minh. 12. 9 good night. The cockpit, good night, malaysia 370. It has taken us 25 days to get the transcript released and the final word and the truth about those final words. Reporter whats so remarkable here is when you listen to what you just read out, experts say, im sure they have been telling you, there is nothing remarkable about it. It is pretty standard. Except perhaps some of the language isnt quite by the book. The point, it goes to the heart of the credibility of this investigation. 25 days, in many countries, that would have been released within 4872 hours including some of the discussion that you heard from the control tower communicating with the airplane. That wasnt done. To also say the first time around that whatever was the last communication uttered by the copilot. They have an audio recording. They need more forensic evidence. The point is, from the start, it seemed as if no one had a clear handle on this investigation. You cant blame the families or doubting everything thats said about this investigation at every angle, considering the lack of evidence. It is a great point to show you how mundane and routine they seem. Couple this information with the wall street journal report. Three days searching in the wrong area or what they believe to be the wrong area. Only because they werent communicating. What are the officials in the area where you are, what are they saying about this delay . They are not leading it. They might as well be. We spoke to the chief coordinator, angus houston. We have already heard from him. He spoke to him today. We got to talk to him about several issues. He was incredibly forthcoming and blunt about the task ahead. Also, being very clear that this is going to take a long, long time. He is not couching any words about his idea of whether or not they will get to the answers. I want you to take a listen to him right now. I have to say in my experience, and i have got a lot of experience in search and rescue over the years, this search and recovery operation is probably the most challenging one i have ever seen. The most challenging he has ever seen. A man with decades of experience and being in the business, the former chief of the Defense Staff here. They say, though, they are giving this their best shot. When we talk about coordination and how things went wrong, that is not the case now. They tell us, more assets in the air, in the ocean. They say, much better coordination all around. Paula newton, we appreciate that. We are going to check other stories that are making headline. Gm ceo, mary barra, will explain why it took her company 13 years to issue a recall over a design flaw that has now been linked to 13 deaths. Families of those killed in crashes gathered on capitol hill urging the government to pursue a criminal investigation into General Motors. The death toll from the devastating landslide in Washington State continues to rise. Officials say 27 people are now confirmed dead. That just came in a few minutes ago. 22 others still unaccounted for. Many of the dead have been identified, including the youngest victim, the fourmonthold child. She was killed along with her 45yearold grandmother who was babysitting. Apparently, that baby was found feet from her grandmothers body. A beautiful child. After a search for the last day of open enrollment, owe ba oweobamacare is on target. They will have a statement from the white house rose garden at 4 clan 15 this afternoon. A convicted spy in prison could be released for the next few weeks. This is a huge development. Jonath Jonathan Pollard is a former u. S. Intelligence official. He was convicted of spying for israel in 1987. Talk of his possible release comes as secretary of state, john kerry, is working in the middle east. This release could be part of some kind of deal and effort to salvage the current israeli, Palestinian Peace talks. Interesting training. Back to our top story. In the new developments in the search, malaysias transport ministry has released the transcript of flight 370s final communication. At the end, we first reported yesterday, no one says all right good night. Instead, someone says, good night, malaysian, 370. We want to look at the significance of this, if there is any. Joining us, mary schiavo and jeff wise. Good to have you both. Mary, lets start with you about the actual transcript. Earlier, david susi was on the air suggesting there was a bit of anomaly. They repeated back all except for the last command. He said he found that notable. How about you . What do you see in the transcript . The transcript to me looks pretty routine, business as usual. I have seen a lot of transcripts in different investigations over the years. This is pretty clean, actually. It is pretty straightforward. I think they might have been the pilots might have been a little irritated with air Traffic Control. They repeated malaysia 370 and their altitude a couple of times prodding them to maybe give the clearance to transfer over. A couple times, they had to ask air Traffic Control to repeat something because air Traffic Control was garbling or mumbling. If anything, it was kintd d of reverse. This he were doing their job and on air Traffic Control case. If it is routine, lets talk about the fact of the transcript, the fact that we are now getting it and have it not released for 25 days and the fact it is a different last line than malaysian officials have sworn to a few weeks ago. It is almost like we knew less than we did before. Now, we are just not sure. There isnt much we can determine, with all respect to david, i dont think there is that much remarkably informative about this statement, per se we start to wonder about something basic like this. They were just four words that were uttered or not uttered. They have gone to saying, was the copilot to they dont know who said the last words. As we said earlier, this is just an example of the kind of shifting misinformation we have been getting consistently throughout this whole episode where it really leaves us uncertain of the footing on which we are standing. There has been a lot of criticism of their handling of this. I think this only adds fuel to that fire. Mary, i want to talk to you about what malaysian officials are telling cnn that they believed or they believe that this was a criminal action. Im curious if you believe that there was anything in this transcript that makes you believe that as well or any other actual fact that would lead you to such a conclusion. So far, publicly, we have heard absolutely nothing that portends of any criminal activity. There is no evidence. The transcript certainly doesnt contain it. When they first said it was the copilot that said this and now they say they are not sure or maybe it is pit lthe pilot. It is so easy to determine this. The pilot had 18,000 hours. He is on youtube. There must be a lot that are familiar with his voice. You can do a voice analysis. The fbi does that all the time. There is not one shred of evidence that anybody has heard to point to a crime. Lack of evidence doesnt mean it must be the pilot. I dont see the evidence. Nothing there as far as we can tell unless there is something they are not telling us. Mary, jeff, we are going to ask you to stick around. You can tweet questions you have, those questions that are pressing you to 370qs. Searching for a needle in a trash dump. Whats your policy . This is something thats happened a few times during the search for flight 370. What looks like a promising lead ends up being garbage. It is frustrating, distracting and causing searchers to lose valuable time. It has taught is a lesson about how filthy the ocean is. We have a professor in science at the university of maryland. We have seen so many of the satellite images and airplanes. All these objects in the water. Everyone gets their hopes up. It all turns out to be trash. Im surprised but i suppose you are probably not surprised that all these objects are crash. What is it . In the ocean, you have all these container ships running across from east to west, north to south and so on. They are dumping over 10,000 pieces of containers in storms typically, over board. You can have 1020,000 pieces of debris floating around, anywhere from lighters, bottles, cans, fishing nets, shoes and so on. On both side of these oceans, you have heavy coastal populations. People dump birthday balloons, beer cans, sixpack holders. Everything makes it into the center of the ocean. Stuff drifts and just gets to the center in these socalled subtropical gires. We have talked about them. They sort of spool everything around, sort of the whirlpool motion and it drives it all into the center. There are a few in the world. I am curious about this. I have lived near the ocean. With he know that saltai air an salt water is extremely destructive and corrosive. Why does it not eat away at this trash or does it . Well, it does. Plastic, you have to remember, it can take tens of hundreds of years to bio degrade. Plastic is made to last for a long time. Plastic bottles and fishing nets, they are surviving for a very long time. These gires, even though they are big, they are converging in the middle of the subtropical gires. This is the stuff we see. What about whats under the water . What happens to the stuff that is on the bottom . You often find dolphins, turtles, albatrosses and so on at the bottom with their necks caught down and little fish and big fish ending up with plastic pellets, big tunas with all kinds of junks in their stomachs. 10,00020,000 pieces. As much as it sinks, there is still more being produced constantly by the human population along the coast lines. If you talk to your kids, they have been taught in their schools about the importance of disposing properly of certain trash, why we are getting rid of plastic bags and going to paper . That can be recycled. This stuff can be recycled and that can. Ragu, we appreciate you joining us. Hopefully, you will join us again at this hour. Ahead for us at this hour driving this car was like playing a game of russian roulette with my safety and that of my friends g. M. Car Crash Victims and their families speaking out on capitol hill right now slamming General Motors and the cars that they say put their lives on the line. We are going to tell you their emotional stories just ahead. Return on investment wall isnt a street. Isnt the only return im looking forward to. Our commitment to current and former military members and their families is without equal. Its shaping up to be an emotional day on capitol hill. Lawmakers and families of gm crashes are speaking out hours before the ceo testifies before congress. Earlier, we heard from families who had lost loved ones, including a devastated father who lost his 16yearold stepdaughter. My wife, jane, lost everything. Natasha was her only child. No boyfriend troubles, no wedding date jitters, no children for natasha or grandchildren for jane, no Family Member to care for her as she grows older, just a forever hole in the heart for the daughter she so loved. Our poppy harlow is on capitol hill. She is at the News Conference that was held a short time ago. I am really interested to hear what you have heard the families say. I know it was a point of frustration. They have felt that g. M. Has not been good to let them know their Family Members were part of the whole recall and the death suit. Reporter thats a very important point. That list of the 13 people that g. M. Acknowledges did die in crashes as a result of this ignition problem, that list has not been released. The families do not know if they are on it. We expect to get the names later this week when g. M. Turns that information over to the government. The problem impacts 2. 6 million g. M. Vehicles. The ignition switch can get knocked by ones knee. It can turn the ignition into an off position. That means the air bags wont work, the automatic brakes wont work, et cetera. That is a huge concern. The key here at this hearing is, g. M. Apparently knew about this in 2004, did not come forward with the recall, until a decade later, why did that happen . Why did government regulators not see a pattern in this if you have more than 30 crashes and at least 13 deaths . Very hard to stand here and listen to the Family Members speaking. You heard from one father. We also heard from a 20yearold that said that they had two very scary, terrifying encounters in one of these g. M. Vehicles, calling it a death trap, saying they felt it was playing russian roulette with their life to drive this car. Also, some senators, representatives as well. She has had to deal with nearly nonstop damage control, poppy, since the beginning. She is face to face with the families today. She has been reaching out to them already. She has. G. M. Has told us and i also spoke to some families that told me. They were in the meeting last night. It was held at the g. M. Offices here in d. C. She met with about 20 Family Members that had lost loved ones. She apologized to each of them. One mother who lost her 19yearold daughter told me, it is not enough. I want these cars off the road. I dont want anyone to be able to drive them unless this is fixed. Right now, g. M. Is saying, take all of the extra stuff off your key chain, use your key and these cars are safe to drive. They are fixing them as well. Clearly, from the families here, that is not enough. I think the question is going to be, what did g. M. Know when, what did regulators know when and what kind of liability is this Company Going to face . The national Highway Transportation Administration did an act on implementing a recall and they are going to be hauled out to be facing tough questions as well. Poppy harlow, thank you so much for that. Apologies and getting out and talking to these people but you cant replace their loved ones. These are 13 families that are forever changed. Welcome back to this hour you are looking at world series champions, Boston Red Sox. Who is that . The world champion, Boston Red Sox. They are arriving to meet with the president , of course, at the white house. To the victors go the spoils. Every team that wins the championship gets to go there. This team exemplifying boston strong after the marathon bombings. It is so much to boston and to the recovery of the city. What makes this day particularly beautiful is exactly that. It is such an honor. The president and all the teams seem to enjoy the visit from the teams. Can you tell us about the blazer . Thats jonny gomes, plays right field and righthanded and drives in a lot of key runs. He bought everybody on the team that wore one of those blazers. He is the only one that wore it. There were rumors that he bought the president one of them. They were going to present him with one of those, not that he needs it. How about big poppy. He just looks good no matter what. I cant see how close the president is to walking up to the podium right now. If we have a second. There is joe biden. Let me just say, joe biden uses foul language and so does big poppy. Remember, he said, this is our blanking city. I would like to bring in another son of boston, mr. John king. He is champing at the bit to join in on the day of celebration. Doing your city proud. Reporter kind of nice. If you grew up a red sox fan, it wasnt until our adult life we got to see this at all and now three times. It is great to see that. I dont think the president is if jonny gomes has that jacket, i am sure it will end up in a closet somewhere. Big poppy has something under wraps he is going to give the president. What is he holding there . He is holding some kind of package. President obama, you will remember, john, because you were there, after the marathon bombings, gave a lovely speech lifting the spirits of that city. He talked about, one day, some boston team would win a championship. Little did he know it was going to be the Boston Red Sox. It is a great group of people. You see jerry remy there, you see the current team, some of the executives. Some are dressed quite corporate. Other players arent quite sure what to do. I still think that that blazer that jonny gomes is wearing is pretty styling. I want both of you gentlemen to be able to revel in this moment for your city. We are going to take a short break and come back as the president speaks to the team, the red sox. Well be right back. Co ive always found you dont know you need a hotel room until youre sure you do. Bartender thanks, captain obvious. Co which is what makes using the hotels. Com mobile app so useful. I can book a nearby hotel room from wherever i am. Or, i could not book a hotel room and put my cellphone back into my pocket as if nothing happened. Hotels. Com. I dont need it right now. Welcome. There is the president addressing the world champion, Boston Red Sox. As we kick off the 2014 baseball season, i thought i invited the red sox here today. There must be a mistake, because i dont recognize all these cleanshaven guys. Here is one guy, a couple guys that decided they thought the beard was working for them. But beards or no beards, it is an honor to welcome the 2013 world series champion, Boston Red Sox, to the white house i have to say yall have some fanatical fans. Many of them occupy my administration and the white house. Look at my white house photographer. He has been thinking about this day all week. I got my press secretary there. I am surrounded by red sox fans. I know all the members of congress from the new england delegation who are equally fanatic. Back in 2004, watching the red sox win the world series was a novelty. Over the past ten years, this clubhouse has the winningest championship record in baseball. Three world series titles in a decade under the leadership of john henry, tom warner, larry lakito and their pat nertners. Since they won this one at fenway, the diehards can finally declare the curse has definitively been broken. Obviously, all the wins were sweet for red sox fans but i think for the nation as a whole, there was something about this particular squad that was special. Well go down in history. Not just because they went from worse to first but because they symbolized the grit and the resilience of americas one of americas iconic cities during one of its most difficult moments. Nearly one year ago, hundreds of thousands gathered on a beautiful spring day to run and cheer the historic Boston Marathon but a senseless act of terror turned celebration into chaos. Joy into anguish. Four young people lost their lives. Hundreds were injured. The city was rocked. But under the guiding hand of somebody who i consider one of the finest Public Servants that america has known, mayor tom menino and his lovely wife, boston stood resolute and unbroken and as the smoke cleared, we gained inspiration from the injured, who tackled their recovery. Those who were running and walking again, including the young woman who has returned to professional dancing with the prosthetic leg, we took heart from the First Responders who put their lives at risk and bravely ran toward danger. People like officer Richard Donahue of the nbta transit police, shot and nearly killed that night, after months of rehab, richard is walking again and keeping up with his 18monthold son. We are proud to have richard here today. Give him a big round of applause. Today, our hearts are in boston again. The families of Walter Kennedy and edward walsh, who gave their lives protecting others from a massive blaze last week. Their sacrifice like the sacrifice of those made last year remind us of the selfless purge of everyday heroes that put their lives on the line to help others. The First Responders, brave citizens, rest salute victims of these tragedies, they are all boston strong. Ultimately, thats what this team played for last season. Every man behind me did his part to keep the team rolling. There was zander bogarts, the upstart rookie that took over at third base and didnt let up. Contested veterans like my fellow hawaiian, Shane Victorino and mike napoli, who came in and shook off the rust and the injuries to secure win after win. Lackey and lester, the heart of the rotation that upped their game and started begging their manager, john farrell, to stay injured, six and seven and eight innings. And, of course, the legend, the only man to play for all three championship teams, the biggest bat in the dugout, big poppy. Love this guy. Even a white sox fan could appreciate these guys. For all the big names, this was never a single superstars team. If you look at the numbers, no pitcher won more than 15 games. No batter hit more than 30 home runs and yet they led the majors in runs scored, won the most games in the american league, had the second best e. R. A. In their hardhitting division. So this team never lost more than three games in a row all season. They just had a lot of heart. It was that consistency that brought the red sox into the postseason. It was the drive to do more for the city that had their backs, that took them on to win in the world series. With the rallying symbol of boston strong, mowed into the outfield and sewed into the uniform, the red sox took the field against tampa and detroit with the full weight of their city behind them. When they found themselves in game four, down two games to one against st. Louis, the faithful cheered as jonny gomes knocked in a threerun homer out of the park breaking home a tie and giving red sox nation the signal they werent done yet, big poppy let it rip and earned the world series mvp. Koji ohara, third choice closer, kept one of the best post seasons with his signature splitter that sank straight into david mosss mid to win the world series, four games to two. Then, koji looked so happy after every game. Jumping up on people. So they all stormed the field ready to duck boats but this was more than just a trophy and parade with every game they played. The sons of fenway never forgot what it meant to wear the boston uniform. When they visited bombing victims in the hospital, when they played ball with kids getting cancer treatment, when they started a program to help Wounded Warriors getting treatment at massachusetts general. They were saying we are all on the same team. Big poppy put it better and more colorfully than anyone of us could. I wont repeat his quote. The point is, boston and the red sox were one this season. We knew last year, even as we mourned the loss and cared for the wounded and resolved to carry on, that the moment would come when the sox would be champions again and the crowds would gather for a parade down boylston once more. Thats what happened. Thats how this team helped boston to heal and true to that spirit, in just a few weeks, Something Else we resolved last year will come to pass on the third monday in april, the world will return to boston and run harder than ever and cheer louder than ever for the 118th Boston Marathon. That will happen. Bottom line is, im proud of these guys. As a baseball fan, i appreciate their comeback season. More importantly, as a president , im grateful for their character and their embrace of the essential role they played in the spirit of that city. Sometimes, sports seems like it is trivial. It is just an entertainment. Every once in a while, you are reminded that sports represents Something Else. It has the power to bring people together like almost nothing can. All of you should be very proud of what you accomplished. I know your fans are. Im grateful to you as well. So congratulations to the Boston Red Sox and red sox nation. Good luck this season. May the best sox win the president finishing up congratulating the Boston Red Sox on their magnificent season last year. Big poppy actually presenting the president with a gift. Somebody listen to big poppy. You never know what he might say. Should we listen to big poppy. A nice jacket. It does look like it is sized for big poppy. I love what the mpresident says. It is so true. A team should be a part of the fabric of the city. It has been beautiful to see how this team has personified this. These players, they split up into small groups and visited with the victims. I know, because ive been to their homes and i have seen the pictures of these players with people in hospital beds. It meant so much to the people and meant so much to the team as well. Lets bring back dorchesters own, john king, who i think enjoyed this as much as i do. You have been at the white house. You know, no matter how jaded these players are and how much they have been through, this is a big day for them too. It is a cool day for them. Lets drop the formality of going through the white house. It is a great for them as athletes. It is an honor and privilege. I worked there 8 1 2 years. You might be grumpy going to work every now nd athand then. You look uppen and see the whit house. You see the two players from japan. La larry lucino, big poppy, he has been there three times. In those neighborhoods, people did rally around the team. They needed a sign of hope, something to grab on. This team is extra special. A lot of these guys live in the area where they played. It is their community as much as it is. The fact that they mowed boston strong into the field and sewed it into their jerseys. I have been in dodger territory. It is really a beautiful thing. We have cnn aviation analyst mar maria staffo and jeff weise. Isnt it possible it landed on the ocean without guidance of a pilot and did not break apart . Just saying. Well, its possible that a plane can ditch, which basically is to do a forced landing on the surface in such a gentle way as we saw sully landing on the hudson. Its possible a plane could land and more or less remain intact and sink leaving little wreckage. Its hard to imagine that happening without a pilot at the controls, though.
