So again, this massive search continues there in orlando. In the meantime, as you may imagine, the Police Department is caught between the search and heartbreak. This is video posted by the Orlando Police this morning. The officers body draped with an American Flag removed from the hospital with what appear to be family members behind those fellow officers. So one can only imagine what this department is going through right now. They are paying respects to this officer that ultimately made that sacrifice. At the same time, theyre tasked with the duty of protecting the community and tracking down this individual considered extremely dangerous. Again, a press conference scheduled any minute now, we should get more information then, guys. The identity of the man that theyre looking for, do we know anything more about the officer who was killed . Reporter not much more. We understand she was a female officer, apparently shot several times according to several local reports, possibly even hit nine times, was taken to the hospital, but that is where she eventually succumbed to her injuries. I think the question now is of course more about this officer, we should possibly learn her identity at any moment after this press conference and of course where she comes from and how long shes been an officer. Paul, well keep our eye on that News Conference and bring you details when they happen. Paul sandoval, thanks very much. The accuse e ed ft. Lauderd airport shooter could eventually face the Death Penalty. Five people were killed in that shooting. This morning there are so many questions about why it happened but also how the shooter was allowed access to a gun, considering his history of mental illness. Authorities took away his gun two months ago after an encounter with the fbi. Cnns Rachel Craine is live with more. Reporter kate, hes facing three federal charges, all of which are eligible for the Death Penalty and that incredibly disturbing Surveillance Video in which you see santiago reaching into his waistband, pulling out the gun, and beginning the attack. We also know he told investigators that he went into the restroom to load the gun and that he came here to the ft. Lauderdale airport intending to carry out this attack. Weve also heard incredible stories of heroism emerging this weekend, including one where a 70yearold electrician threw himself this is the News Conference in florida about the manhunt for someone who shot and killed a Police Officer this morning. Lets listen. I announce that Sergeant Deborah clayton, a 17year veteran of the orlando Police Department, lost her life today at approximately 7 40 a. M. Some of the details of the case, about 7 17 a. M. , she checked out, attempted to contact a murder suspect at the walmart, princeton john young. Two minutes later we received calls that an officer had been shot and immediately Emergency Assistance went out and officers responded. A suspect was spotted by a Deputy Sheriff, captain carter, leaving the scene. He fired at the deputy near the area of north plain, the pine hills road, striking his unmarked vehicle. The deputy was not hurt. The suspect then car jacked the vehicle, fled, later abandoned the vehicle at rosemont. There is a manhunt currently under way for markeith lloyd. He is a suspect that this community is familiar with and he should be considered armed and dangerous. He is a suspect in the murder of a pregnant woman in the jurisdiction of Orange CountySheriffs Office. One of our motor officers, officer robert castro, was injured, not related to the shooting, but he was responding. He will be okay. He has minor injuries. We have a lot of Police Resources trying to catch the suspect. Local state and federal authorities are all working together diligently to bring him to justice. And he will be brought to justice. I can assure the community of that. Ive spoken to deborahs family, at the orlando Police Department were a huge family, we really are. Yo i always tell Police Officers your families are our family. Shes married and has two children. Were going to be assisting them through this very, very difficult time and also providing resources for officers. Ive personally known deborah for 17 years. I worked with her in different assignments. She was committed to outreach and really the community. She did so many different projects in the community. She organized several marches against violence by herself. Thats how committed she is. Deborah clayton is a hero and she gave her life protecting the community that she loves. She will be deeply missed. Im going to stick around for questions afterwards. Right now im going to turn it over to the sheriff. Let me begin by first offering my condolences to the family of Master Sergeant clayton. Shes someone that i know very well. In fact i hired her when i was the Orlando Police chief, to be a member of the orlando Police Department. And at one point we attended the same church. And so my heart certainly goes out to her family as well as the entire orlando Police Department and the city of orlando as we deal with those circumstances. Chief mina has provided a very quick summary of what brought us here today. I will reiterate some of the facts that the chief reviewed. The Orange CountySheriffs Office responded to this incident after an emergency call for assistance went out from their agency. We had numerous members of my agency respond to this incident that started for us at about 7 19 this morning after a suspect description was put out. Based on the vehicle description, one of my captains from the agency was responding into the area, observed a vehicle matching the description traveling at somewhat of a high rate of speed. The captain did a uturn and the individual fled from the captain, also fired at least one shot at the captain, which is why we now also have charges pending for the subject for attempted murder of a Law Enforcement officer from that scenario. As we kind of move forward today, the chief has indicated that we have a significant manhunt under way in the broader pine hills area. I want to ask the citizens and the other members of the public who are in that area to understand that theres lots of Law Enforcement officers there. Allow us some space to be able to do our jobs safely and to bring this individual into custody. I say that because this morning weve had several other Law Enforcement officers who have been injured as they have been pursuing this individual. Sadly, i have to share with you this morning that in my nearly 36year career, this is probably one of the toughest days for me in my career, because not only did we lose an Orlando Police officer today, we lost an Orange CountyDeputy Sheriff as well, who was traveling on his motorcycle as a result of these broad efforts that we have under way. A motorist turned in front of him. Based on eyewitness testimony, he had a green light, he was not traveling at any inordinate rate of speed. He was transported here to orlando regional as a trauma alert. And i have to say the physicians here, we appreciate their efforts, because i saw the sense of urgency with them. And i know that they gave everything that they could to try to save the life of one of my Deputy Sheriffs, who unfortunately did not survive his injuries. Im not going to identify that Deputy Sheriff at this time, because hes a single Deputy Sheriff without family here in the area. The family is in another location. Were working with the authorities there to make the announcement, make contact with his family. So we will not release his information until after that has taken place. And so for all of the Metro Orlando area, floridians, for people in this nation today, to lose two Law Enforcement officers during this Law Enforcement officer appreciation day, is indeed a tragedy. Again, i reiterate that we have work to do to locate the suspect that is responsible for this incident. That subject has been identified as Markeith Loyd sr. Date of birth october the 8th, 1975. Those of you here in the media, you have been provided previously to this date with his photographs. We have been looking for, active actively, and very aggressively looking for Markeith Loyd for the last a couple of weeks and have not been able to locate him. That indicates to me that hes receiving help from someone. And we are calling upon sensible individuals to help us bring him to justice on this day. We have numerous charges at this point that are pending. On behalf of the 2500 men and women of Orange County sheriffs offi office, were sad on this day. For many reasons. We still have to work. And i know in looking in the eyes of my staff, they are 100 committed to continuing to do their jobs to keep this community safe. God bless you all. You can see and you can hear the grief coming from these officers. The police chief and the sheriff in orlando, announcing the very tragic news of the loss of this woman right here, officer deborah clayton, a 17year veteran of the Orlando Police force, answering the call of duty this morning, shot multiple times by a suspect. A wife, mother of two, doing her job this morning, killed in the line of duty. Unfortunately not the only Law Enforcement order who died as a result of this. A Deputy Sheriff was also killed while on his motorcycle in connection to this. He was trying to take part in either the search, the manhunt is under way right now, a manhunt for a suspect named Markeith Loyd. He was the man allegedly at this walmart who shot master Sergeant Deborah clayton multiple times. Markeith loyd is also wanted in connection with another murder in the area of a pregnant woman. He is to be considered armed and dangerous right now, as this manhunt is under way. Several schools in the area are under lockdown right now. We will keep you posted on this and obviously our hearts go out to the families of master Sergeant Deborah clayton and the Deputy Sheriff who lost their lives this morning. Absolutely, keeping a very close eye there and also keeping our eye on washington as we need to turn to politics and the jampacked week ahead, the last full week of preparation before the president s inauguration, starting tomorrow a full slate of confirmation hearings quick off for Donald Trumps cabinet picks. Wednesday the president elects longawaited News Conference coming, that of course is trumps first in six months. If he holds it. He had one scheduled in december. Meantime republicans in congress are preparing to repeal obamacare. Lets go to cnns Jason Carroll outside trump tower. Whats happening, jason . Reporter a long list of things youve got there, john and kate. Lets start with confirmation hearings set to get under way tomorrow. If all goes as planned, the man who could be the next attorney general, Jeff Sessions, will be in the hot seat. In addition you have general john kelly, the man who could be the next man to head up the department of homeland security. Despite all the complaints coming from the office of government ethics, oge, which has been complaining theyve not been getting paperwork in for some of these nominees in a timely manner. Mitch mcconnell, just seen coming into trump tower not too long ago, says thats basically a bunch of rubbish, he says all those who have been complaining about that, democrats and some of the other critics, need to essentially, quote, grow up, saying that the paperwork is coming in in a timely fashion. The process is moving forward, as is plans for that press conference on wednesday. As you said, its been a while since weve heard donald trump answer questions from the press, which he seems to love so very much. The last time he held a press conference was back during december. There were some Unanswered Questions then, there are still Unanswered Questions when it comes to repealing and replacing obamacare. Repeal it, yes, we understand thats going to happen, but replace it specifically with what and when . When you talk about that border wall, he says mexico is going to pay for it. Mexico says theyre not going to pay for it. U. S. Taxpayers are going to get reimbursed, but when . These are some of the questions that hopefully well get some specific answers for come wednesday. John, kate . Great to see you, jason, thank you so much. And now, streep versus trump or trump versus streep . Its not kramer versus kramer, for which she won her First Academy award. Meryl streep last night accepted the cecil b. Demille Lifetime Achievement award. Watch this. There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when i saw it. I still cant get it out of my head, because it wasnt in a movie. It was real life. And this instinct to humiliate, when its modelled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybodys life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose. Thats meryl streep. Meryl streep was referencing Donald Trumps comments about a disabled reporter. The comments about more than a year ago. He was talking about a New York Times reporter. Then and now, many see what trump did as mocking the man. But the president elect trump denied that was his intention, sending out a message this morning, meryl streep, one of the most overrated actresses in hollywood, doesnt know me about attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, i would never mock a disabled reporter but simply showed him groveling. Just more very dishonest media. Joining us is donald trump supporter, harlan hill, democratic strategist Danielle Mclaughlin and cnn political analyst patrick healey. Thanks, guys, for all being here. Patrick, we see the tweets, but importantly here, you spoke with donald trump about this overnight. What was he like when you talked to him about this . Sure. I was working on our Golden Globes coverage here at the times and decided, why not try to reach him and see what he has to say about meryl streep. I called him up, he answered. And he hadnt watched the globes. He hadnt seen the speech, or, he said, heard about the speech at that point. But his reaction was very quick. He described meryl streep as a hillary lover and as someone whose attacks on him were predictable. But i pushed him on the argument, you know, that she was making was that he was using his own skills as a performer and a showman in an insidious way, mocking serge cokovaleski of t times. He pushed bark hard, saying he wasnt mocking serge. All of this stuff is still very live wire for donald trump. He comes out of a hollywood culture over the last 15 years. He has always been extremely proud of his ratings on the apprentice. He talked about his poll numbers like he used to, his ratings. It was something that clearly, you know, that struck a nerve, because he does see himself as kind of a cultural figure. Patrick, you said something casually i dont want to let slide, you called him up to find out his reaction and he picked up. This is the president elect of the United States of america, a man in two weeks who will be the president. And you were able to easily i think get him on the phone to comment on a speech at the Golden Globes. Why do you think he chose to just pick up and talk about that as opposed to not holding a News Conference in six months . Im not sure, john. I started covering him in july of 2015. As you do, as many journalists do, we have phone numbers, cellphone numbers, home phone numbers of sources. As you know, john, when you call a source every day on their cellphone at 11 00 p. M. , eventually they block you. And they dont pick up. So we try to be a little strategic here, now that im deputy culture editor and i was covering the Golden Globes, i wanted to talk to him about that. I also called him up on Election Night when i was a political reporter at 10 30, and he answered the phone. He talked to me a little bit about winning that night. Your point is very fair, john. He hasnt held a press conference in months now. Hes doing so on wednesday. Reaching him a midnight with the purpose of talking about Meryl Streeps speech, you know, you have to make a judgment as a reporter, okay, are you going to then add on a question about his business relationships overseas. Im not diminishing those whatever, but i had to make sure this was a time and place to ask a question i wanted answered and then move on. Harlan, whats your reaction to meryl streep and how donald trump reacted, speaking to patrick about it at length last night and taking to twitter to continue the discussion this morning . None of this surprises me. While meryl streep was busy politicizing the Golden Globes last night, Hillary Clinton was a couple of blocks from where we sit right now at a broadway performance, she received several Standing Ovations from the crowd, went on for ten minutes or Something Like that. I think that that perfectly illustrates the metaphor for the divide in this country, the coastal elites live in a bubble, hollywood elites or us in new york keep going, but this is the video of what happened when she walked in. There parts of america that are really suffering, people havent had pay increases in years, their fear of isis is metastasizing. Meryl streep had an opportunity, if she was going to politicize this event, to talk about things that affect actual americans, not this ridiculous gossip. I think he should apologize for this and lets move on. But lets just get past this. To be clear, its not gossip, he said what he said about the reporter, but you did say he should apologize. It would have been nothing a year ago. To harlans point, danielle, meryl streep, she said what she said, what we just showed there, then she continued to speech and said a Little Something else here, that illustrates what harlan is getting at. Lets play that. So hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out, youll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts. I dont like the formulation where you call certain americans real americans and not others. If youre a coastal elite, you cant like football. Why does football and mixed martial arts have to be separate . I think youre right, thats probably one thing she could have taken out of her speech and taken back. She talked about empathy. She talked about the Hollywood Foreign press. Actors on a daily basis walk in the shoes of other people. Thats what you do when youre empathic. She talked about the interesting congruence of reality and performance. He created a persona but what it did was absolutely and disgracefully mock a reporter. Hes never taken it back or acknowledged it. You think about the things that trump has done over the years. He mocked Carly Fiorina for her face. He did the same thing to ted cruzs wife. He called Hillary Clinton not president ial. Show me who you are, and ill believe you. His pushback to meryl is, she doesnt know me. What we saw for months in the campaign and for a decade prior is a person who was willing to latch onto a personal characteristic and make a mockery of it and she stood up to that. I think thats something thats not necessarily political but human. Maybe this comes up in a press conference that is scheduled for wednesday, well see. Not only if the question is asked, but if the press conference will happen at all. What trump are we going to see, do you think . When you talk about danielles kind of getting at two trumps, she doesnt know me, but what trump are we going to see . When he accepted victory on Election Night, he said that he wanted to be a president for everyone. And i hope that thats the tone that he strikes on inauguration day. Hes fighting against some real forces that i dont think are totally fair to him. You have people in the media, which meryl streep touched on last night, calling him literally hitler. They are comparing the president elect of the United States to hitler. I think that if shes talking about giving license to violence, that sort of rhetoric, which has become mainstream in the media, is totally unacceptable. People in the New York Times meryl streep didnt say that. She didnt even mention trump by name. Clearly she was talking about him, she made different sort of Strategic Decisions in there. But having covered the globes, having covered hollywood, no one you would think in a way there could be a very sort of predictable, full frontal, name calling assault. But what meryl streep was pointing out is what a lot of journalists and voters saw, which is that donald trump had a way of reaching his audience, of communicating, of performing at his rallies that were incredibly wellattended, that was effective. And from her point of view, it was effective in the worst possible way, that he divided people, he riled people up, showed their teeth, you know, for instance. But the name calling, hitler, no. We have to go, i like both your points here. Wednesday, News Conference. A few weeks after that, meryl streep will be nominated for another academy award, because it happens every time this year. Stay tuned. John, taking on meryl streep. Its a great film. Its harlans favorite. Great to see you, patrick, danielle. Warning shots fired, new information on tension between a u. S. The former president of georgia and Opposition Leader now in ukraine is a bitter enemy of Vladimir Putins. He was the president of georgia during georgias fiveday war with russia in 2008. He also considers donald trump a friend. Mr. President , thank you for being here. Thank you for inviting me. On the Intelligence Report weve talked so much about that is very important right now in terms of the conversation leading up to the president elects inauguration, do you believe the u. S. Intelligence report that points the finger not only at russia but directly at Vladimir Putin for being behind the hacks . First of all, one has to see obviously the whole report, i have only seen part of it. I have no doubt that putin is enacting operations. They talk a lot about, for instance, russian television, rt, but then the question i have, if Everybody Knows that rt is not real media but actually is an instrument for basically dirty tricks, and war kind of propaganda, why dont they put them on the sanctions list . The second question i have, if Vladimir Putin directly ordered it, which he did, and everybody acknowledges that, more or less, why doesnt the administration go directly after Vladimir Putin . Putin has cash in the u. S. He has lots of personal interests in the u. S. There are lots of leverages, how the United States can get Vladimir Putin. Why was this not used in retaliation of the direct involvement of the russian president . So you think the u. S. Administration should respond more harshly. Youve been a friend of donald trump a long time. Can you explain why he hasnt condemned the hack . Donald trumps response would certainly say he wants to protect the United States. Dont you need to acknowledge it before you stop it from happening . He did acknowledge it. It depends on how you look at it. The problem is people are saying these hacks and russian interferences influenced the u. S. Elections, its not only about hacking into the elections system. I dont imagine under any circumstances kgb tricks swaying the United States public opinion. I dont see it. I dont think putin has that kind of leverage, to really convince u. S. People toward this or the other way. And thats why, in that respect, i also have my reservation. I know putin we in the ukraine are fighting, were on the front line of fighting for freedom. Our soldiers have sacrificed lives to basically keep away this threat from the western civilization. So i know what im talking about. The only thing is that i know what putin is capable of, he can kill people, he can also of course have an influence on the world, as he did in georgias case, in ukraines case, in a very adverse, bad manner. I dont see him swaying u. S. Public opinion. It can be do two thinks, though, you can have these two thoughts in one head, right, that they tried and successfully hacked into systems, but the Intelligence Community was not 00ing, there was no conclusion that it changed votes in the United States. You can have those two things. And that seems to be theres hesitancy amongst donald trump and his team of being able to even accept that, that those had to two things are separate. When i look at harsh measures applied in the late stages of the administration, its too little, too late. Back in 2012, when the russians heavily intruded in our elections, the same director of national intelligence, clapper, basically when asked about it, he never mentioned it, but says there was other kinds of threat, then it would be a source of tensions for the russians. I see here some kind of double standard approach. Mr. President , can we talk about the future Going Forward, instead of what has happened, what will happen. Whats your advice to donald trump, again, someone you know very well, in dealing with Vladimir PutinGoing Forward . You just called Vladimir Putin evil on this show. Donald trump has to say for himself. We have experienced previous u. S. President s. Putin lived through clinton, george bush looked in his eyes and saw his soul. George bush clearly wasnt on the right page on that one. We in the neighborhood suffered a lot initially from the perceptions that russia got from out of this. So the thing is that, you know, we should i understand that every president gives benefit of the doubt to the russians. The main thing here is that should they . Well, not to be based on the emotion of fear, thats very important. They should be approached they should be approached right now the whole fuss Vladimir Putin loves it, he loves it. He gets a kick out of the fact that everybody is talking about him. How powerful he is. Wouldnt he also love this . Donald trump over the weekend, he sent out a message saying this, having a Good Relationship with russia is a good thing, not a bad thing, only stupid people are fools, we think that it is bad. Good relations with russia can only be based on america being strong and resolute and decisive. And i think what we need now is reaganstyle strength of conviction. And reaganstyle approach that, you know, you believe in something very strongly do you see that coming from donald trump right now . Donald trump has very strong convictions. Donald trump is a strong personality. About russia . He seems misguided on russia. The experience i have with donald trump, i know detected any particular weakness with russia. And this was a period when after we had war, after Vladimir Putin, as you rightly said on your show, managed to hang me by the balls, then he came to georgia and praised our reforms, called on u. S. To adopt the Georg Georgian tax system. He had no problems with dealing with a socalled enemy of Vladimir Putin. He has strong convictions, most importantly he cant manipulate, you cant be cajoled into something that is against the u. S. Interests, strongly believe that. In that respect putin might have much bigger problem than he imagines. In the short term hes so important, everybody is only speaking about me, im great, all the neighborhood is scared. Vladimir putin can even influence the United States. But on the other hand, if you look carefully at long term, russia has less than 3 of the worlds gdp. He can only play the spoiler. In the long term it will be a huge problem for somebody who likes to manipulate people. I dont think donald trump will be easy prey for him to manipulate. I feel it would be a very difficult case, impossible, basically. An interesting relationship to watch. Thank you so much for being with us. We appreciate it, sir. Everybody has been properly vetted, as they have been in the past, and im hopeful that well get up to six or seven particularly National Security in place on day one. That is senator Mitch Mcconnell leaving trump tower just now. Speaking to the controversy kind of surrounding some of Donald Trumps pick and their confirmation right now. Less than 24 hours to go until the first round of hearings for the cabinet nominees kicks off on capitol hill. The battle to stall, though, the process is underway. After the office of government ethics told Democratic Leaders in a letter that several of trumps nominees have not been properly vetted. Thanks so much for being with us. Jeff sessions does have his paperwork in, so the ooitices office is not speaking about senator sessions here in this regard, but beyond that he is due for a tough hearing. Whats he prepared for . Well, you know, i have a unique view of Jeff Sessions because i served with him for a decade on the Senate Judiciary committee, and i think i know his heart. I think i know what kind of person he is. He is a very, very good person. Frankly, he is going to be, i think, a great attorney general. He really understands whats going on back in the communities. One of the things that i know he is going to do is put an emphasis on the Violent Crime that were seeing in our cities and be a real partner with local Law Enforcement. Mr. Attorney general, this is likely to come up also during the hearing, were told. During the Campaign Donald trump had said quite often that he is going to put a special prosecutor in place and ultimately jail Hillary Clinton. He has backed off of that since the election. The top democratic on the Judiciary Committee where Jeff Sessions will be face will be having his hearing, dianne feinstein, she told the New York Times that she is going to ask Jeff Sessions about that because the attorney general ultimately would have the decision on whether or not to put in place a special prosecutor. Where does Jeff Sessions stand on that . He will answer that question and many other questions. You know, whats so interesting about this is jeff has been on this Judiciary Committee, the same Judiciary Committee members who are going to be asking him questions, of course, have served with him. Some for the entire 20 years that he has been on that committee. They know him very well. I think youll have, you know, any confirmation you have tough questions, and Jeff Sessions is prepared for tough questions. You know, you made a point of saying you know his heart, and he is a good person. That seems to be in reference to troubles he has had in the past. He was denied a federal judgeship in the u. S. Senate in 1986 because there were allegations that he had made jokes about the kkk, the naacp, and there have been accusations he had made a racial slur about a lawyer he was working with back then. He said some of those were jokes. He said others he denied. My question to you is does he need to apologize for these things . In this hearing . The things that didnt get him confirmed, do you think he needs to apologize before the senate this week . Well, as you know, there are some of the same people who were there were there 30 years ago when that occurred or more than that when that occurred. I certainly was not there. I would just tell you that this is a man who is not biassed or prejudiced. This is a man who understands the constitution. Every time i saw him approach an issue and we didnt always agree on every issue. No one ever does, but i thought he always did it very deliberately and with firm, firm conviction. You know, any allegations this man kbhoe do you think there is anything at this point that will derail his confirmation . No, i dont think there is. You know, this is someone who that committee knows very well. You know, he has been on that committee for several decades, so its not like, you know, this is someone theyve never seen before. I think jeff will be confirmed, and i think the allegations any slowdown we might see is exactly what the American People were saying mr. Attorney general.
