The first headliner of the convention, Melania Trump delivered a speech that looks, smells and feels a lot like key parts with plagiarized from Michelle Obamas speech back in 2008. Rnc Reince Priebus said this morning hed probably fire the speech writer responsible. Prior to the speech Melania Trump said she wrote the speech with a little help. The Trump Campaign is denying that Melania Trump stole Michelle Obamas words. Judge for yourself. Barack and i were raised with so many of the same values. From a young age, my parents impressed upon me the values. You work hard for what you want in life. That you work hard for what you want in life. Lets go live to Cnns Phil Mattingly inside the Convention Hall who has been reporting on this. Phil, who wrote what for whom and when . I think theres a big question on that. I spoke to Paul Manafort this morning. He made clear this was a team effort and obviously it went through its stages and approvals. One other thing Paul Manafort made very clear, both to me this morning and repeatedly throughout the day, this was not plagiarism. The campaign did not crib from Michelle Obamas speech and why would Melania Trump ever try to do that given that she would give one of the more highly scrutinized speeches of the convention. Take a listen to what he had to say. There was no cribbing of Michelle Obamas speech. These are common words and values, that she cares about her family, things like that. She was speaking in front of 35 Million People last night. She knew that. To think that she would be cribbing Michelle Obamas words is crazy. This is once again an example of when a woman threatens Hillary Clinton, how she seeks out to demean her and take her down. Its not going to work. Reporter guys, were about 13, 14 months into the Trump Campaign. Thats a pretty familiar strategy right now. When theyre questioned, when they believe theyre under attack, they dont gather everybody together and cower. They attack. Thats what you saw from Paul Manafort right there. Thats what weve seen throughout the day today. This is a very important day for Donald Trumps convention. His nomination is considered today. Theres some thought if they can get through this morning and into the afternoon and evening program. Youve got Chris Christie, donald trump junior, that they can get past this. Theres no question about it, guys. When you look at what last night was supposed to be and what were ought talking about this morning, theres a business of a sense of frustration, this is mott the sense of what they wanted at the start of day two of this convention. Not indeed. Blame the media, blame Hillary Clinton. Phil, thanks so much. Lets bring in someone who knows how this process works or is supposed to know, Donald Trumps former Campaign Manager, cory lewandowski. Hes a cnn political commentator. Co cory, youve been there. Youve been with this campaign. How is this speech writing process supposed to work . Well, here is what i think. I think mrs. Trump is an extremely articulate, smart, successful woman who had an idea of what she wanted to say to the American People. This is her first opportunity to talk directly to the American People, 35 Million People. I think she laid out her vision and asked the team to put together some thoughts based on the overarching goals she wanted to achieve. She has to lay out her vision and someone in the campaign laid out Michelle Obamas vision . I dont know the intricacies of how the speech came twob. She probably said i want to talk about my childhood, my sister, my husband. Here is what i want to talk about as a u. S. Citizen. Somebody, a staff person who should be held accountable i agree with Reince Priebus, whoever wrote the speech should be made accountable and fired. I know what its like to be fired from the Trump Campaign. We know this. When you do something that is so egregious, that the story today is not how great Melania Trump was and how successful the campaign will be, ive had the accountability. Should be should held to that same standard. Do you think this is just someone being sloppy. The criticism that has come of the Trump Campaign is the campaign is disorganized. Is this an example of that or just sloppy . I think probably a little bit of both. What i think you have, the rnc is taking a much larger role in the campaign and their Research Team is involved in part of this. You have the Trump Campaign campaign. Someone through the convention process is making sure they know what Chris Christie was going to say and what joni ernst is going to say. Someone at the senior levels of the campaign has reviewed what Melania Trump was going to say and signed off. Whether theyre held responsible, because the buck stops at the top, or the person who actually put the words to paper is held responsible, i think its shameful that she represents her husband and would represent the country as a first lady you call it a mistake. Thats not what the campaign is saying so far. Paul manafort basically said nothing to see here, this is what you get when you attack Hillary Clinton. Chris christie says no, no, no, its not plagiarism because 93 of it wasnt what Michelle Obama said. Youre saying something completely different. Youre saying there was a big mistake and someone should be fired. 23 of the 26 words, if that is true, were exactly the same as Michelle Obama. The staff should have seen that. Do you think thats plagiarism, what we played at the top . What i think is somebody writing the speech for Melania Trump im sure went back and looked at what mrs. Obama said and for some reason decided that is something they want to put in there. Look, this is not on mrs. Trump. Mrs. Trump, i will be guaranteed to say she was not familiar with what Michelle Obama said in the past. She did say in an interview that she wrote the speech with a little bit of help. With help, of course. Remember, Melania Trump speaks four languages, unbelievably intelligent. This is not her native language. Im not questioning her intelligence. She relied on other people to make sure the speech was right and it went through the process which all Convention Speeches do. When Chris Christie gave the keynote speech four years ago, the romney team looked at it, vetted it. Thats the process every speech goes through for the conventions. You think the statements made in the speech writing process. How about in the cleanup process now, corey . Were 12 hours since melanias speechgate was delivered and were getting mixed messages at best from the campaign. Whats your assessment of how they handled it . Look, i think theyre probably concerned internally. Thats what i think. I think this is not the type of tuesday they wanted to have, tuesday morning. They wanted to have the success that Melania Trump brought to the convention. The floor was electric. She looked amazing, delivered a fantastic speech. That should have been the narrative this morning, not talking about a mistake that the staff made and didnt catch properly. I think going into the afternoon, that will go by the wayside because they have roll call vote. This morning, its something that probably could have been avoid zbld corey, you said someone on the staff level is responsible for this. You also said you dont know it could go all the way to the top. All the way to the top would be Paul Manafort who has been out there saying theres no way this was plagiarized. Do you think the buck stops with Paul Manafort on this . When i was the Campaign Manager, the buck stopped with me, and im sitting here with cnn now. At the end of the day, when youre the convention manager, youre in charge of the convention. There is no detail too small, particularly when you are looking at and scrutinizing the gop nominees wife to give the largest speech in front of 35 Million People, there is no detail you should overlook. Paul manafort youre saying bears some responsibility for this . I think someone at the staff level. Paul is at the top of that and he should find out who is ultimately responsible for putting that information in and allowing it to go forward and hold that person accountable. Corey, the Trump Campaign is not known for apologizinapologi. You yourself not known for saying im sorry or apologizing. Do you think those are words well hear come out of anyones mouth during the cleanup process . You dont need to apologize. You need accountability. Ive been held accountable in this campaign. Other people should be held accountable. You dont need to apologize, but you need to fix it so it doesnt happen again. Who is to say this staff person isnt involved tonight and doesnt make the same mistake again. Are you saying donald trump needs to do this or Paul Manafort. Paul needs to take a deep look inside, make sure the protocols are inside. The final signoff that allowed this to go forward. If it was Paul Manafort, he would do the right thing and resign. You think Paul Manafort will resign if hes the last person that saw this and saw this happen and brought this on the candidates wife, i think he would resign. You not so long ago were in this campaign. What was the process when you were in the campaign . Was the process you would sign off . Of course. On speeches . Of course. You think Paul Manaforts signed off on this . I dont know. Paul has a giant role as a convention manager, maybe looking at a number of dipt things. Its possible paul didnt see the speech ahead of time. Someone at the senior levels of the campaign did see the speech, whether the Communications Team or someone helping at the convention or someone at the rnc. Theres accountability in life. If someone doesnt resign or doesnt end up pushed off the campaign, you would think what . I think its unfortunate that mrs. Trump is subject to this because of a staff mistake and she should never have been subject to it. Shes too good for that. All right. Corey lewandowski, thanks so much. You made some news. Were flogging the speech writer who did this, it was a remix, it sounds really different when melania says it with the accent. A lot of excuses. Instead, who are going to believe, us or your lying ears . At the very least they could have sent a small speech writing fee to Michelle Obama. Alice, Corey Lewandowski is obviously close somehow to trump or people within the campaign basically told us, yes, it sounded like plagiarism, that someone should be fired and basically just sold Paul Manafort out as big as you possibly can. To me that indicates a high degree of discord within trump world. Well, clearly. Clearly there is. First and foremost, it was a phenomenal speech. She did a great job but here we are talking about this. Theres a couple things. Any attempt to try and tell people that there was not lifting of Michelle Obamas speech is insulting to try to pass that on to people. Its embarrassing to melania who gave a great speech. For them not to take action is completely the wrong steps to take. I can assure you on the ted cruz campaign, if this has happened, someones head would have been rolling out the door by midnight last night. And also the fact, you know exactly who writes those speeches, you know exactly who tracks the changes. If someone goes into the speech and changes a period to a comma, you know who does the changes. They know exactly the entire process from start to finish who wrote this, and that perp should absolutely be held accountable. Are they making it worse now . First i would say in all the years i ran for office, i wish i could find a supermodel to say all the nice things about me. She gave a fantastic speech, class, dignity, grace exactly what youd want out of a first lady. No one disputing that part. Totally overshadowed by this turning into a fiasco and dominating the news cycle where there was so many great points of the convention yesterday that were not talking about at all. Theyve got to take action, find a way to stop it and move forward. Whose fiasco is it, just to be clear . The Republican Partys fiasco. We altogether want to see donald trump elected as president and move the country in that direction. So all of us share part of that problem and we can blame it on one person, but something has got to be done to move forward and continue to move a message. Thats whats supposed to happen at this convention, not was there plagiarism involved. It doesnt look as good as what we would want the message to be. Dan, Paul Manafort this morning tried to turn the focus to Hillary Clinton. He said this is what you get when you have a strong woman standing up to Hillary Clinton, they try to take her out or demean her, close to quoting him. Youve been involved in speeches like this. Could this happen if this isnt plagiarism . No. This is obviously plagiarism. Obviously a grievous error on behalf of someone on the Trump Campaign. Who is that someone . Youve been involved in this. Someone wrote that speech with the guidance of Melania Trump and the rest of the campaign leadership, someone wrote that speech. They know who that person is and they seem unwilling to take action o that. They made a huge mistake and theyre compounding it every hour with another lie. You made a mistake, move on, wed probably get bored and move on. Every time Paul Manafort goes on television or sends out an email or statement today, theyre making it worse. The whole thing, whether the plagiarism, the scheduling last night, some of the messaging was real amateur hour. Conventions are supposed to be four nights of positive coverage. They screwed up the first night with this and with joni ernst who is supposed to be making the appeal to republican women for donald trump speaking to am empty arena after prime time is over. Does anyone care to weigh in . Maybe jim you do, from Corey Lewandowski sticking the knife in the back of Paul Manafort in a public way. This might be the first kind of public admission that there was discord. Remember all public statements were we all got along. For lewandowski to come out saying man fort should be going i wonder who hed replace him with. I saw him leaving the set really quick, as if he was auditions for something. You stop it right now. Here is the one thing i do wonder. It is, while Paul Manafort and the Trump Campaign say theyre not going to talk about it anymore, theyre going to move on, does this translate, does this bother delegates . Does this bother republicans at home . Does this bother voters who are maybe seeing Melania Trump for the first time. Thats what part of the convention about, andre, presenting these arguments, this passion, this story, these people to an audience that might not be watching on a daily basis. Absolutely. To me its not so much about the folks in the arena because we know theyre going to support the team. What were concerned about are the swing voters, especially in the few states where it decides the president ial election. This is a free shot at a message that you get to dictate for the most part, if you do it right, and were missing that opportunity right now. We have four days, 25 of us is now gone. I see it as a real opportunity lost to try to appeal to folks that are in the middle and trying to decide where their vote is going to do. Alice, youve done a lot in terms of pr and politics before. I think most people watching that speech thought it was a phenomenal speech and they will give a pass for the fact that a lot of this was lifted. If i were to give them advice, certainly hold someone accountable, call out who the person is, because American People need to know how this campaign will handle a crisis, when the true crisis does come along, its not a forsd error on their own part, they need to see them take swift and Decisive Action which they have not done in this case. They were given a voice yesterday, had an opportunity, submitted the signatures. Some of those folks didnt know what they were signing so they restrakted the signatures. They were given a voice, an opportunity and the effort failed. Nothing else they can do . You can always try to make noise in a Convention Hall. Theres nothing thats going to be effective in terms of impacting the nomination process. Which is what the whole goal was. It was 5u8 about embarrassment to the gop, to donald trump. Dont tell that to Ken Cuccinelli and mike lee and all those delegates that were screaming on the floor yesterday. The key going into it, why did they not know they knew their guys were not going to hold strong. Why do it except to have that as the attention. Why steamroll them, why not let some of the air out of the balloon yesterday so youre not going to again deal with it this afternoon. They said this is an issue well talk about all week because you have delegates on the floor who feel their voices have not been heard. Theyve lost 8412 on saturday. They had to start its called rules. We do have rules. They sat there. They lost every single time. This was another desperate hail mary. Unfortunately Ken Cuccinelli and senator mike lee are the scapegoats. Im not a never trumper, i think its good we come out of cleveland with delegates feeling they were disenfranchised. I would give the rnc and podium credit for recognizing the motion. This time they at least gave them a voice. Recognized the signatures submitted to the secretary. Watching the Convention Last night, what do you think the best moment was. The best moment for the Trump Campaign, im not certain yet. The best moment for the Republican Party was joni ernst. She was a superstar last night. But i thought it was indicative of the Trump Campaign because they buried her at 11 30 with no one in the hall to hear her. I peaked up because this is what i wanted to see the entire night. I think Melania Trumps speech had an opportunity to humanize trump. It was a swing and miss. Swing and miss because of the plagiarism issue . Well, that is an issue. A lot of people watched the spiel and thought it was effective. It was effective to pint. She is his number one character witness. When you have a speech like that, when you have an ann romney, a Michelle Obama. What we didnt hear is how hes a great husband. Give me a story about what he does when youre sitting homesick lying in bed or what does he do with baron. The reason she read it so eloquently is because it was Michelle Obamas speech. I heard black lives matter last night more than i hear black lives matter at a black lives matter rally. It was that type of rhetoric and some was difficult i have sive. Joni ernst and general flynn can we talk about the wwe moment. When donald trump took the stage, he walked out with the smoke behind him, the sell wet and introduced melania, his wife there. John, that was a powerful image. Will that stick with delegates . Do delegates like that . I think it was a very powerful image. But i think its also an indicator of whats to come. Well see more of donald trump in the next few days. Its going to be exciting. He won the nomination based on his ability to do things like this and his experience in terms of Reality Television and driving the media narrative. How does he top it . Is it zip line . People were disappointed he didnt zip line. Parachuting might be next. Anything less would be unexpected. He knew he had to do that. He came out and gave this very short introduction of melania. There was people saying he would go for 20 minutes talking about everything else. Thats the key about mr. Trump. I guarantee well tune in tonight.
