Political heartburn and setting up a mustwin here in new york in new york. On the republican side, ted cruz calls his decisive victory a turning point in the race. As it turns to new york, what does that mean . One thing is definitely more clear this morning, it seems, a contested convention this summer now even more likely. So where are the campaigns headed today . What does it all mean . Jeff zeleny has fresh reporting and Phil Mattingly is looking at the republicans. Phil, let us begin with you, my dear friend. Big night for ted cruz. No question about it. Its what his campaign needed. Its what any of the antitrump groups had to have. Not just because wisconsin changes the name or certainly doesnt put ted cruz within striking distance of 1237 himself, it brings him closer to a contested convention and what it sets up more than anything else is the fight is not about keeping donald trump from 1237, its about the fight behind the scenes going on and youve got super pacs already sending resources that way and ted cruzs Campaign Best organized of all three campaigns in a very good position there Going Forward. Its a fight hes good at, ted cruz. Thats right. Phil mattingly, thank you so much. Jeff zeleny, lets turn to the democrats. How do things look there . Things look more intense for the Hillary Clinton campaign than ever hoped. Bernie sanders had a real win in a real battleground state. Clinton has to prove that shes the strongest candidate. The campaign has had problems with excitement and enthusiasm. What they are now trying to do is contain Bernie Sanders. They believe new york is the place to stop him. So what im told they are going to start doing is show that hes not qualified to be president. So on the way to doing that, they are going to try to diminish his potential and were already seeing that in interviews. He didnt spell out his plan to sort of break up the banks. She seized on that. The campaign seized on that. The entire transcript is saying, read this, hes not up to the task. Shes also questioning if shes a true democrat. The Sanders Campaign is also seizing on this trying to disqualify them. Its a bit of a chess game. If Bernie Sanders wins new york or competes strongly, its undecided in every way. Hillary clinton, shes now pivoting back, right . She was almost pivoting to a general and now shes pivoting back to taking on sanders. Last night you saw ted cruz pivoting straight towards Hillary Clinton. How does this all pan out . What do you say . The best way to show your strength inside the party is to go after the other party. Thats what ted cruz was doing, saying get ready for us. Someone within her campaign in brooklyn said, we would love ted cruz to run because hes more predictable. Im curious, phil, what do you think ted cruz hes at an event in bronx today. Donald trump is in long island. Ted cruz is in the bronx. What is the strategy . Its going to be fascinating. Donald trumps advisers are not even hiding it. They believe they can get 85 to 90 delegates out of new york state. The map Going Forward is not great for ted cruz. A lot of northeast and on the east coast right now. So how he deploys here is an interesting way of looking at things. The reason why is this. We talked about how organized this campaign is, how they have a great ground game and how theyve been able to flood in to places. Camp cruz. You allocate three per state. So long as you hold donald trump under 50 in the majority of the 27 congressional districts and you get above 20 , you can start picking off delegates. Ted cruz is not going to try to win new york but hes going to try to depress on some level Donald Trumps ability to do well here. Again, saying last night that last night was the turning point and now he needs to prove that, this is the first step to do that. Math is not fun but its definitely becoming more and more important here. Thanks so much. Wisconsin voters handed big wins to Bernie Sanders and ted cruz. Lets talk now more about why they voted the way they did. Chief Business CorrespondentChristine Romans is here with a deep dive into the exit polls. What are you seeing . Kate, john, there are some surprises. We asked democratic voters who would be a better commander in chief . 51 picked sanders ahead of clinton. On trust, a wide margin for sanders there. 83 say hes more honest and trustworthy. Clinton wins just 16 of that vote. Another reversal of recent trends, sanders beats clinton with women voters. This one was close but its been a strong area for clinton and sanders closing the gap there at least in wisconsin. Her advantages showed elsewhere. Clinton crushing him with africanamerican voters. She took 69 of the vote. Just 10 of the democratic voters in wisconsin but its an important demographic as they head to new york and california. For republicans, fear of their frontrunner and fear of the economy, we asked voters how they would feel if trump was elected president. 38 said scared. Another 20 said concerned. Almost six in ten voters worried about frontrunner donald trump as president , a sentiment that clearly benefited ted cruz there. Another fear factor and astonishing 94 of gop voters say they are worried about the economy. Who has the best chance to defeat democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton . Trump was not far behind and 37 and kasich at 17 . This leaves the possibility of an open convention to be a real, real possibility, guys. Delving into probability. Christine romans, thank you so much. Let us bring in barry bennett, amanda carpenter, ana navarro. Ana, you get the honor of the first question. Ted cruz last night called this a turning point in the campaign. Is it . Yes. Definitely. Look, if donald trump had won last night in wisconsin, he would have been that much closer to being the presumptive nominee. Right now, we are that much closer to being an open convention. So last night was a turning point. I think last night was a fork in a road and we took the fork thats leading us towards an open convention. Its still not an absolute certainty but a lot more possible than it was before last night. And i think what youre hearing from the campaigns is a lot of spin. The Trump Campaign is trying to lay the narrative out that we are in for shen nan gaanigans. Even if he doesnt reach 1237, its because of shenanigans and the establishment. The Cruz Campaign is telling you, were still alive. Its an open convention. We are recruiting delegates. We are courting delegates. Weve got a strategy. Kasich is saying, hey, dont forget about me. Most importantly, the rnc is saying, we are going to be transparent. We are preparing for this. And were going to give everybody a chance and were going to lay it all out. The last part is the most important. Barry, from your perspective, from the angles that weve looked at it, it just isnt. It just wasnt. Well, one, i never expected to have any delegates from wisconsin and i woke up this morning with six. Thats good. Thats a way to set expectations. Wisconsin, ted cruz is their trojan horse in wisconsin. Governor walker is a very talented politician. But the bad news is, there are not a lot of more scott walkers laying around the country. We didnt expect to win. We didnt expect to get any delegates. But the most important thing is, theres no place like home. We will see how that goes over the next the fact is, you went from 54 to 60 . Its a step back as far as that goes. Amanda carpenter, im curious, do you think wisconsin was more of a victory for ted cruz or a victory for the stop Trump Movement . And does that distinction actually matter . Probably more for ted cruz but i would concede it as a Major Movement for the stop Trump Movement. Listen, we all woke up today and accepted this fact that were going to an open convention. I think the rnc once described it as the ultimate grassroots experience which is kind of funny. We see now that donald trump probably is not going to win the nomination outright. That is a big, big deal. Even if hes leading in the delegates, he is not going to walk out of that convention the nominee because he didnt clinch the magic number of 1237. Its important to show that cruz can continue to unify people and you have to get them unified around the principles. I think its essential going into a contested convention that people poison the well on potential deal making and i think that would be Donald Trumps way to win over delegates in this type of environment. It has to be distinction drawn that we are going to unite around principles that matter to the party and not special favors for delegates that they may be seeking. And those papers will be interesting to watch as we learn about it as it goes on. But not illegal. Not illy. There are some lines but we havent found it yet. Wisconsin was very interesting because it wasnt only a win for ted cruz and his organization, which is impressive. Its lowkey but its impressive but also a culmination of Donald Trumps mistakes. We talked about this last week. For the first time last week he uttered the words misspoke a mistakes which tells you the women and heidi cruz thing hurt him. Do you think it added up to a loss last night, barry . We won 61 of the counties in wisconsin. What we lost was the republican machine around milwaukee. Thats how they won and turned out big numbers. Barry, youre going to states with a lot of closed primaries. If there was some atmospheric, it would take place in all of the counties. It was around milwaukee where they turned out the machine and big numbers. Theres no woman problem they turned out the people where they live. Youre talking about counties that dont have many people there. Barry turnout was the same in almost all of the counties. Just more people live there. They voted differently than the rest of the state. Barry, im curious, what changed last week that for the first time in ten months we saw them make a mistake and misspeaking . What triggered that other than the faces of the moon . I dont know what youre talking about. Okay. Well, he said that he wish he hadnt done it. Amanda, can i get a final thought from you from the ted cruz perspective and then weve got to run. Yes. I think what is being overlooked is that donald trump just casually accused ted cruz of a crime. When trump is losing, hes threatening to sue. He also threatens lawyers and legal action and never comes through with it. But it is a big deal that he so baselessly smeared ted cruz on that in a carefully written statement. People should wake up and Pay Attention to it because its simply not acceptable. There have been articles saying that there is disarray in the trump camp. Is there any acrimony inside the campaign, that you can see . Any inward looking intro specs right now . No. I talked to everybody this morning and we knew we were going to lose wisconsin. We won three more delegates than i had hoped. Everything is fine. Were going home. Lets go home. That could be a problem, though, barry. We will see. Thanks so much, guys. Coming up, it really is coming down to two things for both primary fights. Momentum and math. Were going to look ahead to the big showdown in new york. Does trump plus cruz and kasich divided by new york equal a definite contested convention . Pull out your td83s. And any minute now, Hillary Clinton live here on cnn. Again, just hours after the big defeat in wisconsin. Whats her plan moving forward . A whole lot of questions for the democratic still frontrunner but not by as much. Thats next. Pennsylvania votes in a few weeks. We are already past yesterday and on to tomorrow. Hillary clinton speaking to a union crowd there in philadelphia fresh off the tough loss in wisconsin. At this event for us is senior washington correspondent joe johns. There you are, joe. Hes in philly at the event. What are we expecting to hear from Hillary Clinton at this hour . Reporter we do expect Hillary Clinton to show up here at the aflcio meeting in philadelphia in just a little while. Were told shes running a bit late, according to the speakers. Weve been getting mixed signals out of the campaign, kate, i think. On one hand, theyve been sending out emails containing links to an interview that Bernie Sanders did with the Editorial Board of the New York Daily News and talks about remedies for breaking up the big banks which is his key issue saying hes not even certain how some of that would occur legally and, you know, what would happen in the courts. So it appears to be a bit of a stumble for him. The Clinton Campaign leaning on that and sending out links to that interview and suggesting that they are going to turn up the heat on him to qualify and defeat him and go ahead and unify the party. But this morning, Hillary Clinton on an interview on msnbc was asked if she thought Bernie Sanders ought to get out of the race. And to be honest with you, she said its just not up to her to decide that. Sort of mixed signals coming out of the campaign. The question now is whether Hillary Clinton now here in pennsylvania as well as new york will try to turn up the heat and seal the deal on Bernie Sanders. And the question is what kind of rhetoric shes going to be using. Back to you, john and kate. Joe johns for us in philadelphia. Were going to keep an eye on that event. When Hillary Clinton starts talking, we will bring that to you live. Right now, lets turn to team sanders and talk about last night and also, forget last night. Were past it. Lets talk about the future. Lets bring in tad divine, senior strategist. Onward, my friend, lets focus on new york and beyond. Weve been hearing from jeff zeleny from inside the Hillary Clinton campaign that they have a renewed focus to disqualify, diminish, defeat him and part of that might have already started. There was an interview with Hillary Clinton and in an interview she says shes not even sure Bernie Sanders is a democrat. Listen to this. When he puts his head on a pillow at night, do you think he goes to sleep a democrat . Well, i cant answer that, glenn, because hes a relatively new democrat and, in fact, im not even sure he is one. Hes running as one. So i dont know quite how to characterize him. Ill leave that to him. Leave it to you to respond. Shes right hes a new democrat. He was elected as an independent. When he got into this race, he signed a form with the federal Election Commission saying that he was running Democratic Party. When he filed for the New Hampshire primary, they asked him what he was running as. It said democrat. Its true, his affiliation with the Democratic Party is new. Hes been a member of the caucus in the United States house of representatives of the conference in the United States senate. For 25 years, hes caucused with the democratic leadership. Its only a small percentage, fractional, more than Hillary Clinton did when she served in the same time in the congress with him. So, yes, he is a democrat and running as a democrat. You know, if he ran for reelection of vermont, would he run as a democrat there . Theres no Party Registration in vermont. If he could go and register as a democrat in vermont, he would do so. Were not worried about bernies reelection in the senate. Hes going to be elected as president of the United States and thats our focus. The Hillary Clinton campaign has said hes not done a lot to get democrats elected. Do you think thats a line thats going to help you win in this closed primaries coming up . Well, first lets look at the facts. When we were in New Hampshire, they were attacking bernie for running for the Campaign Committee because lobbyists were there running for the Democratic SenateCampaign Committee. Earlier, bernie signed a piece of direct mail for the Campaign Committee and raised more than 1 million. I think it was the biggest piece of direct mail they sent out. Bernie sanders is prepared not only to support the Democratic Party but to pull it together and unify it. Most importantly, hes demonstrating that he and he alone can bring millions of people, independent people, young people disaffected by the party, thats the strength of his candidacy. There are people now suggesting, tad, that hes also demonstrating perhaps not as firm a grasp on some of the issues as some candidates would need at this stage of the game. He did a sitdown with the New York Daily NewsEditorial Board. He was asked about how he would break up the big banks, which is something that Bernie Sanders would say as part of his Campaign Platform and his answer was muddled on it. He wasnt sure whether the fed would do it and is Hillary Clinton right, does Bernie Sanders need to do his homework . No. Shes wrong. Bernies answer was absolutely correct. Its done through legislation. The legislation that hes talking about would impose a cap on these big banks to say that they could only be big as a certain percentage of the gdp. He supports that legislation and also said that the secretary of treasury would be empowered under dodd frank to move ahead along with other financial regulatory authorities to do it if the bank was too big to fail. He rightfully and correctly stated that its questionable as to the extent of the Federal Reserves authority in this area. Most economists agree on that. What bernie said is right. I understand when you go to new york, youre going to get hit by the tabloids. Thats what the New York Primary is about. Everything he said in that interview was absolutely, 100 correct. So where are folks outside of the daily news see as a muddled response to something that is one of the staples of pillars of your campaign, you are satisfied with how he handled that answer . More than satisfied. I think Bernie Sanders understands the authority of the Federal Reserve. No. It was a very broad base and the authority of the Federal Reserve specifically on this issue as to whether or not they have authority to deal with and to break up big banks is a question that is disputed among leading economists. By the way, a number of economists are speaking out supporting everything that he said in that interview. He talked about the tone of the campaign. Lets listen. Sure. This is what i would say to them. Which is, dont destroy the Democratic Party to satisfy the secretarys ambitions to become president of the United States. What do you mean by that, dont destroy the party . Jeff had just been told while he was standing there i think from jeff zelenys reporting that the Clinton Campaign was going to do, as you stated at the beginning of this interview, begin attacking Bernie Sanders, defining him and essentially trying to destroy him and then unite the party. We dont have to be like the republicans. Donald trump doesnt care about the republican party. I dont think cruz does either. They are willing to tear the whole thing apart. If we disagree on issues like fracking, which she supports in some places, bernie does not, like breaking up the big banks which bernie wants to do and she does not, we can have the disagreements but we dont have to attack each other personally. But when it comes to running for president and running in a primary on a basic level, isnt it to defeat and disqualify the other person and say that you are more qualified . Couldnt we say the same couldnt they say the same about Bernie Sanders . You guys have gone negative. Well, listen, i dont agree with that characterization weve gone negative. Weve never mentioned her in a single television ad. Those are the things speaking fees, talking about the fundraisers, criticizing her for weve talked about and he will continue to talk about a corrupt system of campaign finance, that Hillary Clinton, unfortunately, has chosen to be part of. So have many other people in washington. Thats why we have the gridlock that we have today. Bernie sanders has taken actions to undermine that system and created a new way forward when it comes to funding campaigns. Thats the only way we are going to make progress, particularly a rigged economy. Tad, another thing that your campaign has opened the door to in the next 24 hours is the idea of contesting this at the convention, taking it all the way to the convention. Jeff weaver last night said it was going to a convention. Wouldnt that tear up the party . Hillary clinton did fight at the convention in 2008 but youre suggesting you will . Lets see where this process is when the voters are done speaking. What were committed to and what bernie is committed to right now is allowing everyone in this process, everyone from california and here in the District Of Columbia in the middle of june to vote. But youre willing to fight . Were going to fight all the way. In philadelphia on the floor . Well see where the numbers are. We believe we can win a majority of do you disagree with jeff when he says this is going to a convention . I dont disagree with jeff at all. Well see where we are when we get to the voting. When we talk about a convention s. It for a threat or a promise . Its neither. It is a factual statement that we believe we will have a majority of pledged delegates by the time the voting ends in june and on that basis we intend to try to get the superdelegates and both candidates are going to need superdelegates to get the majority of convention delegates. Bernie sanders is the strongest candidate to win the general election. We have enormous polling data that shois that view. Well also demonstrate that he can have momentum and pull together a coalition that wins in the general election. If you dont have enough superdelegates or commitments heading over into philadelphia before the convention, will you still fight it out on the floor . Listen, im not going to speculate about what we are going to do in july. Were focused right now not just on new york but what will happen on saturday in wyoming. I think if we do, bernie will be the nominee. Tad devine, thank you. Thank you. Ted cruz took a bite out of Donald Trumps dell lead with a win in wisconsin. What does that mean for the map and how does that cut into Donald Trumps pact to win before the nomination . Were going to take a deep dive into the delegate drama. Wopen up a lot of dawn. Tough on grease. Yet gentle. Dawn helps open. Something even bigger. Go to facebook. Com, dawn saves wildlife. Lease a 2016 lincoln mkx for 399 a month only at your lincoln dealer. I have x1 from xfinity so. Dont fall for directv. Xfinity lets you download your shows from anywhere. I used to like that song. All right. Live pictures from philadelphia, pennsylvania. Any minute now, Hillary Clinton will speak to a union group. This is her first big event after the loss in wisconsin and a pretty big loss there. The question, will we see a change in tone from her from that stage . Again, well know in moments. A moment to go. We also have heard about the big win last night and the fight that prepared to take onGoing Forward. Lets talk about this growing tension now in the democratic race. Here now with us is cnn political analyst david gregory, Patti Solis Doyle and bill press, the host of the bill press show and a Bernie Sanders supporter. David, be a referee on this one. The sanders win and how this fight is now becoming a real fight between the democrats, what does it mean now . Well, we have to find out. Obviously theres two big points here. Youve got the New York Primary and another debate. Theres a third point which is that Bernie Sanders is still raising money. 44 million in march. He can do a lot with that to keep himself in the game. Anyone suggesting he should step aside, hes obviously not going to do that. Doesnt have any reason to do that. But the math is still formidable and the Sanders Campaign understands that which is why they are trying to argue momentum and enthusiasm. He exposed vul ner ra bill teas in Hillary Clinton as a frontrunner but as some of the supporters of Hillary Clinton who were originally supporters of barack obama, obama back in 2008 lost six of the last nine contests and in some cases by a big margin. But the way that the delegates are apportioned still means that the lead is difficult for sanders, if not impossible to overcome. Bill press, what about that . Because Bernie Sanders had a big win in wisconsin. Much bigger than people thought. He outspent Hillary Clinton in wisconsin and after all of this and after all the angst youre hearing, he netted ten delegates in wisconsin. Its an uphill climb. No. Everybody says its an uphill climb. I know that. Im amused because this thing coming out of the clinton and i hillary wins her first caucuses and when bernie wins by 13 points in wisconsin, they say it doesnt mean beans. Yes, it does. It was a significant win last night and i think the tension that i see right now is that Hillary Clinton would just rather bernie get out of the way so she can focus on donald trump. Hes like a pest. And Bernie Sanders, hes still in to win this thing and feels that hes got the wind at his back which, after winning six out of the last seven contests, probably going to win wyoming on saturday, seven out of eight, i think he does have the wind at this back. This is just a good, healthy competition thats going to keep going whether Hillary Clinton likes it or not. Patti, youve been with the Clinton Campaign back in 2008. That cant feel great. Hes got the wind at his back, the momentum, six of the last seven states and hes got a whole lot of money. Hes outraising you guys three months in a row. That cant feel great. You know, i feel bernies pain on this, i really do, having lived it in 08. Heres the deal. The way the process works is if you as a candidate can win early delegaterich states by wide margins, like Hillary Clinton did and, frankly, like barack obama did against hillary, catching up to that delegate lead is almost impossible and thats where Bernie Sanders is right now. I kind of want to say what it felt like millions of people said to me in 08, math is math. Thats hard. You know, what i think is tricky about this is if we spend too much time talking about the mechanics and the process of where the math is going to ultimately take us, we can lose something and that is, if youre Hillary Clinton, youre walking a fine line here. She would like to disqualify him and were starting to see that. The New York Daily News was problematic. Shes coming up to the mike. Im watching. She wants to keep his supporters in her camp once she gets to the fall. Guys, lets listen to Hillary Clinton for a second. Thats video that were looking at. Were still moments away. Im sorry. It had a live feel to it. It felt so there. I want to give you the last word. Tad devine said, nothing to see here. Hes getting beat up pretty hard here in new york over that. Does he need to sharpen his answers . Well, first of all, i think hes getting unfairly beat up over that interview. I read the entire transcript. It was the editors of the New York Daily News who didnt know what they were talking about. They asked him how to break up the big banks. He said, number one, legislation. If you cant get that, you give the Treasury Department the authority they have under dodd frank, existing authority. By the way, thats Hillary Clintons position as well. It was the editors who kept saying, how about the Federal Reserve. Bernie never said the Federal Reserve it was questionable. Is this transcript going to decide the primary . I dont think so. This is a lot to do about nothing. Well, what could help decide the primary is the big debate next week. A programming note on that. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders face off for a democratic president ial debate live from the beautiful brooklyn, new york, next thursday, april 14th right here on cnn. And also this. First, the sex scandal and now a call to impeach. Why alabamas governor nis refusing to step down. He says its a sextalk scandal. Not a physical scandal. Lets talk about that next. Plus, Donald Trumps road to 1237 delegates may be getting tougher. Right now, every delegate matters. Well talk to a man who understands the math and hell tell us how hard it will be for donald trump to clinch the nomination. Muddling through your morning is nothing new. Taking a live look right now in philadelphia where Hillary Clinton it looked like she was heading to the stage for her first big event since her loss in wisconsin. Were going to keep an eye on this and bring it to you whenever she takes to the podium and starts speaking. In the meantime, lets look on the other side. Ted cruzs win in wisconsin makes the road to the republican nomination a little tougher for the man who has been ahead in the delegate count rival donald trump. Trump would need to get about 60 of the remaining delegates to reach 1237. That is the amount you need to win on the first ballot in cleveland. I want to bring in David Wasserman to help us crunch the numbers. I stalk you on twitter. Thats creepy. I want to make that disclaimer right now. Big fan of yours. Ive seen what youve written over the last couple of hours about what happens in new york. Thats the next big state here. What are the delegate rulings in new york and how do you expect donald trump to do here . Well, the interesting thing is, for all of the complaining that donald trump does about how the parties treated him unfairly, the wacky rules of the map is actually helping him quite a bit. It actually happens to be the case that the most democratic district in new york, which casts just 5,000 votes for romney in the south bronx, has just as many delegates at stake as the most republican district in wisconsin which cast 257,000 votes for romney in 2012. Trump is doing well in minority districts which has a lot of bang for your buck and part of the reason for that, hes doing very well among the small pockets of Republican Voters in heavily minority areas that are led by minority resentment. The stakes are getting higher and higher with how this is turning out. How bullish are you on trumps chances in new york . Well, donald trump has to hit 57 in new york to have a chance of getting to 1237. Now, if he does and by all indications hes above 50 , he could win close to all 95 delegates given the winner takes most. He needs to win about 58 of the delegates remaining to get to 1237. That sounds really hard. Its doable. I think hell probably fall just short and need some of the unbound and uncommitted delegates to get him over the top. The question is by how much. And really when you look at the map of remaining, he could compensate for his poor wisconsin performance by doing well in new york but this is going to come down to five states and the biggest ones are california and indiana. Those are thats my bubble watch to determine whether donald trump is going to get to 1237 or not. California is june 7th. So you essentially think its going to be close and its going to come down to the very last voting day . Dave wasserman, great having you here. We have to jump back to philadelphia where i want to greet all of you. I want to thank rick for that introduction. And for your leadership on behalf of working families across pennsylvania. I remember when he showed up in 1992 to work in the Clinton Campaign, back there in little rock, arkansas. That was an incredible experience.
