In the standoff that started early this morning after two or maybe three gunmen stormed the hotel and open fire. For the very latest, lets bring in our correspondent from nairobi. A lot of stuff has been changing minute to minute with regard to this hostage situation. What are you hearing there . Reporter afp also saying that two gunmen were killed in the hali hostage siege, according to the malian military. It does not necessarily mean its over. This is a huge hotel. There are many, many rooms, plenty of floors, lots of spots for gunmen to hide. Of course, theyre probably likely going to be sweeping floor by floor, really trying to make sure no gunmen remain. At the moment, afp saying two gunmen were killed in the hotel siege, and also saying the hostages, they are holding no more hostages but not saying that the gunman have all been killed also body count rising. A journalist on the ground has seen a number of body passes, and the number of injured. Weve heard up to 18 bodies and even perhaps more than that could have at least been seen and counted at the scene. Very, very sad day for the radisson blu. It was it is, i believe, a very beautiful hotel. Very popular with westerners and always full. And always full. Theres a lot of moving parts there, robyn. Do we have a firm number of how many people were inside . What about claim to responsibility . Who were these gunmen . Reporter we do understand that an al qaeda affiliate has claimed responsibility for this attack. There are two favorites from the Al Qaeda Al Qaeda movements operating inside mali, theres Al Mourabitoun, and al marcene. The one, Al Mourabitoun staged a very similar attack to this in early august. They attacked a hotel. The hotel in central mali and killed 17 people. It was also a very upscale hotel. Killed a few foreigners as well as a number of Malian Security Services Officials and very similar m. O. Attacked it early in the morning, early on a friday morning and managed to keep people hostage for a number of hours before Malian Security services went in. Much similar to the case today. The other group their leader released an audio recording encouraging more attacks against france. Of course, malg li is a former french colony. Mali was home to the french intervention in 2013 where they tried to work to stamp out these very fanatical movements that looked to be behind todays attack. Robyn, its also coming through that six american citizens were among those rescued so far in mali. That coming from u. S. Africa command that was sent out on twitter. What else are you hearing about who could have been inside that hotel . Who were among the rescued . Reporter the hotel seemed fairly full. A number of Chinese People were inside. We understand some of them were rescued. German Foreign Office said two germans were able to escape. We heard there were russians who managed to get out as well. Also not sure if others remained inside. Six american citizens, an American Special Operations Forces on the ground there assisting in some way. Were not sure in what capacity they were assisting Malian Forces who were running the operation along with the u. N. Mission there. A number of other indian nationals, algerians rescued as well. At the moment in terms of the people who died, we know two Malian Security services died in this attack. One French National and according to afp, one belg national as well. Robyn kriel in nairobi. This was a hotel popular among international travelers, and robyn was describing the different types of people that could be in there, could be a prime target for an attack such as this. Again, to reiterate, while afp is reporting all hostages have been freed, cnn is working to independently confirm that. And that also doesnt mean this siege is over. Very tense, ongoing situation there as we continue to follow developments in the horrific situation in paris. Lets get straight there with john. Absolutely. This attack in mali, definitely an international target, as you said. We just learned six americans were rescued from inside, at least six americans. Two u. S. Military personnel involved on the outside of the hotel, we are told. French special forces also involved in the rescue and the raid. Here in france this morning, all the News Coverage turned from the attacks here that were one week ago to the attacks in mali. Why . Well, the feeling that it could be in a way an attack against france outside of france. French military personnel have been involved in operations outside of mali for a couple of years. In fact, they went in in force to mali two years ago to push al qaeda back as they move for the capital there. That was a successful operation. Want to bring in cnn terror analyst paul cruickshank. We understand a group has claimed responsibility. We havent confirmed that. Such keen interest whats going on there. Obviously, france under attack by isis one week ago. Now perhaps french interests, a hotel where a lot of french travelers stay, under attack as well. Who might be involved . Well, theres chatter at the moment on twitter from al qaeda supporters suggested that Al Mourabitoun, a jihadi grouped aligned with al qaeda, based in mali. This hasnt been authenticated. Al mourabitoun is a oneeyed terrorist who launched the siege of a gas facility in southern algeria in 2013. Been responsible for a lot of terrorism in mali, the wider region. Also responsible for an attack in bamako in march when several gunmen went after a restaurant. It could well be his group. He was targeted by a u. S. Strike in libya in june. The groups leader said he had not been killed in that strike. There was some hope he was dead. The french Security Services have a nickname for him, the uncatchable. Hes been, very, very elusive. Hes got lots of connections with Smuggling Networks and his loyalty to al qaedas al zawahiri. Also one group split off and it said their allegiance was with abu baker al baghdadi. It is very much ongoing. Afp reporting no more hostages inside. We do not know if the people who took the hotel, if the terrorists have been subdued or apprehended. Theres a disturbing tend with charlie heb doe. Some isis affiliated members wanted to get in a game of one upsmanship, Abdelhamid Abaaoud could have been involved to prove isis could do more than aqap. Do you worry thats what could be going on mali . Perhaps al qaeda affiliates seeing what isis affiliates did, to say, hey, we can do that, too. I think its a global rivalry between isis and al qaeda, one up manship to launch bigger, bolder International Terrorist attacks weve seen a string of attacks in belgium and that beach attack in tunisia, more than 100 people being killed in ankara by suicide bombers, beirut, kuwait, yemen. Theyre competing, these two groups, for a finite group of supporters. Trying to appeal to the global jihadi movement. What does this mean for isis . The biggest possible benefit to them in terms of a target . The United States. I mean, al qaeda can still brag about the 9 11 operation. I think thats why isis is ratcheting up the threat. Isis will try and find a way to get through. The number one way they could do this is by sending european extremes they recruit, they can get on a plane to the United States. Several of these people on paris attacks were not on watch lists. Paul cruickshank with me. Just getting word six americans were rescued from the Radisson Blu Hotel in mali. The siege, were told, after fp reporting there are no more hostages involved. Unclear if the standoff between special forces raiding that hotel and terrorists inside is over or not. New today, french officials here in the investigation of the paris terror attacks one week ago, they found another body in the wreckage of the raid that killed the planner, perhaps the ringleader of the attacks here. So who else was in that terror hideout . The identity as the manhunt for the surviving jihadi continues. Welcome back to cnns special coverage in france. Im john berman. The latest on the terror attacks in a few moments but first breaking news in west africa. Afp reporting there are no more hostages inside the Radisson Blu Hotel there. Earlier this morning gunmen stormed that hotel, killing at least three people, although perhaps many more. Taking more than 100 people, including six americans hostage. Weve just been told by u. S. Africa command, the military in africa, that six americans have been rescued from that hotel, at least. There could be more in there. At this point we do not know the state of the gunmen in that siege, could still be very much active. Well keep you updated because were getting new information by the minute. Meantime, here in paris, the death toll from last weeks terror attack has been revised. It has risen. 130 people have now been killed. This news coming as Officials Say they found another body, an additional body inside that apartment in the suburb of saint di saintdenis, where they killed Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the ringleader. As we get word, salah abdeslam, the man who could have been the eighth attacker that night, still very much at large, an active manhunt for him. Joining me paul cruickshank, and independent journalist in paris whos been following the situation very closely. I should say, not surprising the death toll has been revised. I was talking to the deputy mayor yesterday, and still over 100 people in serious condition in the hospital. An awful event gets worse by the day. Were one week on now, and the story continues to develop. Of course, theres still a lot of people in hospitals in very critical condition. Im afraid the death toll will rise in the next couple of days. Its a very sad story. Were learning more information. For instance, the lady who was in the apartment as well who blew herself up. Some details are coming out right now. It was actually a girl who was pretty well know in the area of month molenbeek, the neighborhood in brussels. She was actually a party girl, smoking and drinking a lot, having a lot of boys. Radicalized only six months ago. This shows how difficult it is to actually monitor potential terrorists in europe. Paul, word there was a third person inside that apartment. Any sense of the identity of that person . Any sense of the identity of the eight people taken into custody from that raid . Not yet. Everything weve found out about this cell, as people involved in the two ways, theyre all french and belgian. Thats the nationalities at play here. We also found out many of them, most of them identified so far have gone to syria to connect with isis in that country and have come back. Thats the profile of this terrorist attack. Heres why this is very concerning because isis is still plotting new waves of attack against france, against europe. Indeed, people connected with and working with Abdelhamid Abaaoud are right at the center of that. One of these is fabien clain, weve been talking about together on our air, whos a longstanding french jihadi who has risen up the isis hierarchy, has a pretty prominent position and reputation of being a master brain washer, radicalized people to get them to go find americans in iraq. What hes trying to claim back all these french and belgian recruits coming in, giving them very, very quick training and then sending them back. The reason theyre going so quickly in this training is because that means these french and belgian extremists can just book a holiday to turk y two, threeweek vacation, beach vacation, and quickly disappear into syria. So the europe Security Officers dont suspect they went to syria at all. I want to bring in Nic Robertson because a couple other developments. Abdelhamid abaaoud closed circuit television, we havent seen it yet, of him in a subway station around the time these attacks took place friday night, one week ago. It seems he was nearby or at least in the city itself while it was happening. Also, nic, were getting a new look at the raid that ultimately killed abaaoud in saintdenis two days ago. This cctv footage at the subway station is interesting in that he was clearly here in paris at the time of the attacks. Whats particularly fascinating about it, one would imagine, french intelligence officials will be trying to dig deeper on this angle, is that the neighborhood that he was spotted in in paris is where one of the attackers cars was later discovered. So, was he meeting with them prior to their attack . Was that his level of involvement and engagement in this . It isnt clear at the moment. The death toll has climbed from 129 to 130. Not because someone who was critically injured has died. We understand there are now 29 people that are in very critically injured category. That has gone down a little. More are in serious condition. This man was discovered two days ago, dead in his apartment. It appears he was hit by a stray bullet. He was in his apartment, close to the gun battle when a stray bullet went through his window and thats what killed him. For three days he lay there without being discovered. That is such a cham. Nic robertson. I want to get one comment on the breaking news in mali. It is connected to franch. Everyone in paris has been watching closely today. The french consider mali within their sphere of interest. French troops, more than 1,000 have been active in there for a couple of years now. Yes. Since there was the threat of al qaeda two years ago, france decided to help mali to prevent that al qaeda was taking over the country. Its still a very dangerous country. The south is secure. North is very dangerous and bamako is well, relatively secure. Were seeing today thats not the case. And it also shows french targets or countries in the french influence sphere can also be a victim of terrorism. That was the concern this morning that you could have an attack on france outside of france, which is why theres so much interest. Thank you so much for being with us. Again, the breaking news, this ongoing assault at the Radisson Blu Hotel in bamako in mali. Afp reporting there have no more hostages nlsd, but inside but w dont know if the battle is over. Because we should fit into your life. Not the other way around. Were continuing to follow break news out of west africa. A lot of new developments that continue to come in, almost by the moment. A colonel with the mali army tells journalists at a press conference that ten bodies were found in the hallways of the Radisson Blu Hotel. This is a hotel popular with international travelers. The army colonel also said to reporters in this press conference that there are still attackers inside the hotel. So, this is very much an ongoing and urgent situation. Afp is also reporting that two gunmen have been killed in the mali hotel siege. Not sure exactly how those two threads of information line up. Well continue to obviously bring all of you the latest all of the latest developments to you to make sure you have bring you up to speed. This started early this morning. Gunmen stormed into this luxury hotel, taking what we believe is more than 100 people hostage, including at least six americans captive. We dont know, however, if there are more surviving gunmen necessarily. We do now that they say this this army colonel has given the update there are still attackers in the hotel as we speak. The state department continuing to warn the situation is, quote, still ongoing. Were following all of that. And also on the heels, obviously, of the horrific situation and terror attack in paris. This has fueled fear of terrorists being able to enter u. S. Borders. That in itself has been fueling a political debate over refugees coming here. House lawmakers voted yesterday to restrict those coming in from syria and iraq until tougher background checks can be put in place and there can be assura e assurances of their background. While the white house has vowed to veto it, 45 democrats defied the president , joining republicans. Sending a strong message here. Here with me is congresswoman martha, and also a former combat pilot with the u. S. Air force. Thank you for being here. A lot of moving parts. Yes, there are. Lets talk first about the refugee measure that you voted on yesterday. A strong message coming from the house. Democrats joining republicans in backing this bill. The president , though, he even said beforehand, he said he will veto it. What now then . I think thats unfortunate. Hes shown in the last week, confusing people within his own party and the american party, hes not showing resolve, tone deaf to whats happening, going on in paris, these unprecedented terrorist attacks. The most we get out of them the most excitement out of him is when hes attacking republicans. Its time to focus on whats going to keep america safe. I had the privilege to serve on a task force for six months to combat the flow of foreign fighters and terrorists specifically related to this new isis threat. We spent six months. We dove in deep. And identified a lot of our vulnerabilities. We came up with 32 findings and over 50 recommendations to really close some gaping holes. In the overall. This is the foreign fighter flow. We have 30,000 people that travel from 100 countries to iraq and syria to join syria. Weve had 4500 countries, visa waiver countries, where they dont need to hide as a refugee. They can come here because its part of a western country. 250,000 americans and unprecedented social Media Campaign by isis to encourage people to take things into their own hands. On this refugee bill, though, this is the first Action Congress the house thought was urgent enough that needed to be taken immediately in response to these attacks. Republican president ial candidate, lindsay graham, man known for his hawkish views on foreign policy, he says this move is missing the mark, though. Heres what he told me yesterday. Listen, com congresswoman. Im concerned this debate about refugees is taking our eye off the ball. The only way to make america safe are you saying republicans are wrong and misguided in leading this kind of march im saying that its good to put a pause on refugees. It makes sense. What is not good to sell to the American People that it makes it safe. What i want to hear from my party is a strategy. Just to repeat it because we had technical difficulties. You could hear it, she could not. Lindsey graham says taking our eye off the ball is what matters. This is not what republicans need to be focusing. What do you say about that . Its one step. We had fbi director comey and secretary of Homeland Security johnson testify before our committee saying there are gaps and potential areas that could be exploited by isis as refugees. But comey also said this measure doesnt really do it. He just said that yesterday. We need to make sure we can close any gaps were aware of. The task force i was on identified 32 findings, which are across the board, related to the terrorist threat, the foreign fighter flow and the homegrown extremism were seeing. Having been a former combat pilot and participated in targeting and air campaigns on many different levels, we have to unleash american air power in iraq and syria. We have to take the gloves off our pilots and stop having them come home with our weapons while we allow isis to fund their terrorism and export it abroad. You talk about tone in criticizing the president. Tone has been a big question on the president ial campaign trail. I want to get your take on a couple of points. In praising this move to make it more difficult or making stricter rules, one of the frontrunners, ben carson, he said this. I hope you can hear this one. He said this about some of those refugees making a comparison to rabid dogs. If theres a rabid dog running around your neighborhood, youre probably not going to assume something good about that dog. And youre probably going to put your children out of the way. Doesnt mean you hate all dogs. Comparing them to rabid dogs. We are the most compassionate country when it comes to refugees. We take in more than any other country. We spend significant amount of resources. The American People really want to make sure we keep our country safe. So, this is he helping that . I can only tell you what were doing. Ive spent hours in classified hearings and briefings this whole week, working on our own legislation. My intent as a member of the house of representatives with National Security background is to address all of these threats to make sure we keep america safe. We need a strategy more than ever. The president is failing in that regard. One thing that would fall on congress, if this would actually happen, is donald trump in iowa. He seemed to suggest just yesterday that he would put in place or want to put in place a National Database for muslims in the United States. Is that something you think is should happen . Would happen, you would support if that came before congress . No. Look, what we identified is there is a sophisticated threat of homegrown extremism. That doesnt necessarily mean if youre muslim. Weve seen individuals being radicalized, the average age is 4 from western countries. We have investigations right now in america, in all 50 states. 70 arrests so far this year. And the uptick is really straining our resources with federal investigators. This is something we all need to work together, all hands on deck. What about that . Weve got to make sure we in our own neighborhoods and communities are identifying those that are becoming radicalized for any different reason. It doesnt have to be, you know, related to their faith. I think the Muslim Community also needs to step up because their religion has been hijacked. This is a very complicated issue. Complicated, no question. I mean, if there was and we need a comprehensive strategy, which this administration has not given to us. We need leadership, we need resolve and we need a strategy that is coherent. You want to change the leadership in the white house, no question. You want a republican in the white house. If this republican is in the white house and he wants to make a National Database, is that right now we have someone in the white house, commander in chief, leader of the free world, and what we need right now we cant wait another 14 months. Rye now my focus is this current commander in chief is stepping up, showing leadership, coming up with a comprehensive strategy to hit isis where they are, work with our allies in the region, to keep our interests and allies safe and also to address the homegrown extreme thats happening here. We have very real vulnerabilities. Our task force identified them. Im focused on Getting Solutions right now and not all the political theater. Thank you for your time. Very urgent time, very urgent need for solutions, absolutely. Lets get back to our other big breaking story at this hour. The attack ongoing, an ongoing situation at the hotel in mali in west africa. U. S. Special Operation Forces are assisting in the situation. Well talk about that. Their role and whats next, whats going on there right now in mali. Also an important programming note for all of you this week in the premiere of the Hunting Ground that airs this sunday. Weve known for probably 25 years now that the problem of Sexual Assault on College Campuses is enormous. Afp reports there are no more hostages in the Radisson Blu Hotel, in the capital city of bamako in mali. No more hostages. It may not mean the situation is over. Officials there say that ten bodies have been found in the halls of the hotel. Ten bodies. Again, there are fears there could be many more killed. Two gunmen have also reportedly been killed, but it is not clear if they were the only two gunmen. So, there was still a lot more information we need to get from that. We do have some video, where you see Security Forces storming the building, hostages being taken outs of the building. The u. S. State department is warning americans on twitter that the situation is still ongoing. The military in africa says that six americans were rescued from that hotel, at least six americans in that military personnel were involved in that rescue. The standoff started early this morning after two or more gunmen stormed the hotel, open fire inside. Want to get the very latest. There are new developments right now. Cnn correspondent robyn kriel joins us. Robyn, what are you hearing . Reporter according to an eyewitness at the scene, were hearing that hes seen many bodies. This is also being echoed by several u. N. Officials who are at the scene who say that the death toll could, indeed, rise above ten. Afp reporting that they that 18 people have been confirmed dead at this time. As you said, mali security minister being quoted as saying that the hostages have all been freed, but that doesnt necessarily mean that the siege is over because there could be more gunmen. Two gunmen reported to be dead thus far, but this is a huge hotel. There are many, many places for someone to hide. And that is most likely what is happening at the moment. Teams would be coming through the room, looking for hostages hiding, trying to rescue them, perhaps looking for more bodies and, of course, making sure there are no gunmen or perhaps anything that the gunmen could have left behind that could be dangerous, improvised devices, explosive devices left behind as well. Robyn kriel for us in nairobi, watching the situation in mali. Want to discuss the rescue operation now. Joined in paris by former air force colonel, cedric. This had to be a complicated rescue operation. You have mali forces, trained by u. S. Special forces, french and some americans involved. How do you assume they went in . Basically in a case like that you find the best entrances. You dont use front entrances. You use side entrances to surprise the terrorists. You do that by going in at a higher level you had, where we normally would find them. They try to surprise them. They try to use stun grenades or Something Like that to get in there and actually, in essence, vacate the premises of bad guy. Its a very tough operation because not only do you not know exactly where those terrorists are going to be, but you also dont know where the hostages are. And thats often where they get caught in the cross fire. When this began, we were told there were more than 150 people inside this hotel. These numbers are hard to verify at this point. Right now theyre saying ten dead, but that number probably much higher than that. The other thing were told is it was two or three gunmen. Does it seem possible to you that just two or three gunmen did this, were able to hold the hostage . No way. No way two or three gunmen could have done that. The Radisson Hotel in bamako is a pretty big hotel and comparable to other big hotels in the world. Theres no way two or three gunmen could have that many hostages at this point in time. Again, the sad reality of where we are right now with these terrorist situations, theres no talking. Theres no going in and trying to reason with people to free the hostages. Have you to go in as soon as you can, firing. Right. Tactics have changed. The old paradigm was basically this. You go in and you talk to the terrorists or the hostage takers and you try to reason with them. These people are beyond reasoning. And they know what the tactics and techniques are of the Counterterrorism Forces. Because of that, they have adopted the tactic where they go in and they kill as many people as they possibly can. Its a brutal, unfortunate way of doing business. The Counterterrorism Forces have to go in and prevent that from happening. Thats the real challenge nowadays. We do note some people have been rescued. We also know many people, perhaps ten or more, have died. The latest news, six americans, we know, were rescued from inside that hotel. Continuing to follow the breaking news at this hour, the deadly siege in the western african nation of forces from Radisson Blue Hotel in bamako. They say that the gunman is inside, and no more hostages, but ten bodies were found inside and six americans were rescued from the hotel. Meantime, the hotel from the paris terror attacks has risen today and the number is 130 up from 129. So, all of this adds to as we are head g toing into, one of t busiest travel weeks of the year, new fears of copycat terror attacks here at home. The fbi says it is monitoring dozens of people inside of the u. S. Who could add to the threat. And now, there is also much propaganda out putting a bulls eye on the United States, and it showed two men threatening to blow up the white house, and there were also militants preparing to the attack new york city. Still, Officials Say no Credible Threats to the homeland, but what does this mean after all of the terror attacks. The former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik is joining me now, and so the nypd and fbi say no Credible Threats to the homeland, but if you are back in your old job, what changes now . What are you doing . Well, no overall threat, and radical islam in the United States is krdable. They continue the say they are coming, and i think that a lot of the videos are propaganda tools to scare the hell out of people in the country, but the reality is that we have to be prepare and ready many te event that something happens. I noticed coming offhere to dda we have loaded the streets with Counter Terrorism cops. There are cops at all of the major hotels. You could see them stand manage the front. I think that the commissioner br brattin is gathering intelligence, but keep in mind that the nosew York City Department unlike any other in the country, we actually have detechtives in europe and in middle east and asia, and so we are collecting all of the intelligence and doing everything in our power to make sure that the citizens off this city are safe, and we just have to stend message to the terrorists that we are not going to cower to terrorism, and they can put out all of the videos they want, but we will go about our business and live in the free society which is what they want the demise of. And a lot of people are wondering is this the new normal . I ask that with this in mind, some of the victims who have survived the paris attacks they say they survived because they ran and others said they survived because they played dead, and so there is conflicting guidance on what to do in this new world. Well, it is all about the bible in that circumstance, because if it is a a restaurant or it is all about the survival. In that circumstance, if you can get out and run and get out of the immediate area, and if you are in a hotel and in the lobby dont go back into the hotel, and watch your surroundings. Bernard, it is great to see you, and thank you for joining usn. On behalf of of john berman in paris all week, and myself, we will thank you for watching, and we will have more details coming from the attack in mali after the break with Ashleigh Banfield. I accept im not the rower i used to be. I even accept i have a higher risk of stroke due to afib, a type of irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve problem. But i wont accept is getting out there with less than my best. So if i can go for Something Better than warfarin, i will. Eliquis. Eliquis reduced the risk of stroke better than warfarin, plus it had significantly less major bleeding than warfarin. Eliquis had both. That really mattered to me. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. I accept i dont have to set records. But im still going for my personal best. And for eliquis. Reduced risk of stroke plus less major bleeding. Ask your doctor if switching to eliquis is right for you.
