This morning. Trump was trying to describe all the obstacles he has overcome in his life. All he has managed to accomplish, beating the odds with virtually nothing but his moxie and a small Million Dollar loan from his father. It has not been easy for me. I started off in brooklyn. My father gave me a small loan of 1 million. I came into manhattan and i had to pay him back and i had to pay him back with interest. Small loan of 1 million from his father, just like the rest of us. This is a town hall event in New Hampshire. Our joe johns is there. Hey, joe. Reporter hey, john. It is an interesting comment but this is not your typical president ial campaign, quite frankly. The one thing about donald trump is hes made it very clear, hes very rich, hes very successful and that is part of his argument for why he should be president of the United States. On the other hand he was making the point that he started small and grew his business substantially over the years. Well see how all of that plays. Meanwhile he was here in New Hampshire today talking to an audience, also speaking with matt lauer of nbc news. And talked about a variety of things before a couple of different crowds. I think part of the thing you have to say at this stage is while hes trailing in iowa, hes also advancing very much attacking ben carson on the issue of whether hes too low energy. Questioning what a Seventh Day Adventist is. Hes doing that because he is trailing in iowa. At same time, hes not acting like hes having any problem in the polls at all. Hes pointing out the polls where hes doing very well and playing down the polls where hes doing poorly and attacking the media for the way the story is being covered, john and kate. Sounds just like a politician. Which he swars he is not. Reporter weve heard that before. Joe johns in New Hampshire, thank you so much. Lets bring in our analysts to talk about the situation right now. Doug high, former Communications Director for eric cantor, also the rnc, david, cnns political director. Guys, i want to get to the Million Dollar comment from donald trump in one second, but i want to start with what i was is probably the biggest news from the weekend. Thats donald trump. You know, were used to whispers about religion in campaigns. You hear it in the back rooms. People quietly hushed. Did you hear hes a dot, dot, dot. Donald trump during his speech just flatout says, im a presbyterian. Ben carson is not. What do you make of it . Lets listen to that sound bite. Im presbyterian. Boy, thats down the middle of the road, folks n all fairness. I mean seventhday add ven tven dont know about. I just dont know about. Can you get away with that . Flat out questioning someone elses religion . Hes gotten away with pretty much everything hes wanted to thus far. Maybe he can. I sure hope not. I hope the comments ben carson made about muslims are unacceptable. Im still troubled about the comments about mitt romney being mormon. The things we need to start moving past. Lets talk about issues and talk about things that really affect people who are hurting out there, need jobs, increase their education, things like that. David, on this note, he was asked he was asked about it, to answer for this on sunday and he said ill apologize if i have something to apologize for. Donald trump says, i didnt say anything wrong. All i said is i dont know about it. I dont know about being a seventhday adventist. On that note, though, hes trying to speak to those folks in iowa. Are they going to listen to that message . No doubt about it. Some might call that parsing of language clintonian. You are right, kate, he clearly whether or not he actually insulted the religion, he injected ben carsons religion deliberately on the campaign trail and into the Campaign Dialogue this weekend because he wants that as part of the conversation. He sees what we see in the polls, which is that evangelicals are contributing to this surge that carson bull pbe having in iowa, who is the undisputed frontrunner in the kickoff state. Donald trump knows hes there because of the support among evangelicals and wanted to throw this sort of into the conversation and see what happens with it. On the subject of things donald trump does, and probably does without any impunity, a little while ago we heard those comments in New Hampshire where he says, i managed to overcome all these obstacles with nothing but a small 1 million loan from my father. I remember when mitt romney got in trouble for making a 10,000 bet. This is exponentially more than 10,000 for donald trump. Do average voters care, though, since wealth is part of his mystique . My father bought me a full tank of gas and said, drive yourself to the state school. Its a little different for average americans out there. Ultimately, as long as were talking about what trump wants to talk, this larger noise, trump does well. The reason hes hurting in iowa right now, fallen to ben carson, because he sustained weeks of attacks on substantive issues on campaign ads. Instead of just getting the attention he wantses, hes gotten a lot of scrutiny. Thats why hes fallen in the polls. I think republican candidates would be smart to continue on this, focus on substance, and thats how you take trump down. Its actually now taking hold in iowa and its working. David, another candidate we heard from, calling himself the joyful tortoise, he seems frustrated, i dont know what frustrated animal you want to put with it, but he was speaking out over the weekend and heres what he said thats getting a lot of attention. If this election is about how were going to fight to get nothing done, then i dont want any part of it. I have a lot of cool things i could do than sit around, being miserable, listen to people demonize me and me feeling compelled to demonize them. That is a joke. Elect trump if you want that. That is a joke, vote for trump if you want that. This may surprise you, but sometimes politicians actually reveal something true in front of the cameras and on stage. And jeb revealed his frustration there. Theres no doubt about that. And i think this is probably the most significant moment of the weekend because i think we can see voters can see with their own eyes how trump is gettin under jeb bushs skin, how he is not at all pleased with the way this process is going. Remember, this comes on the heels of him restructuring his whole payroll, shedding a ton of his payroll and as he huddles with his family and big donors in houston to try to right the ship. You just see a candidate there who is in a position he never envisioned he would be in. This is testing time for jeb bush. What does he do as he face this is existential threat to his candidacy. Its great to see you guys. Thank you. Coming up for us, new video of the raid that put u. S. Forces facetoface with isis. See how the daring operation to rescue hostages all went down. Plus, a potentially devastating pr blow for bacon. One of the leading Health Organizations on earth announces flat out, bacon can cause cancer. Thats just the beginning. And very soon, the woman accused of plowing into a homecoming parade appears in court on murder charges. Well speak live with someone who saved his stepfather during all of this chaos. Moderate to severe Crohns Disease is tough, but ive managed. Except that managing my symptoms was all i was doing. And when i finally told my doctor, he said humira is for adults like me who have tried other medications but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe Crohns Disease. And that in clinical studies, the majority of patients on humira saw significant symptom relief. And many achieved remission. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for tb. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, remission is possible. Awe believe active management can protect capital long term. Thats the power of active management. Digestive core. R so choose ultimate flora by renewlife. It has 30 billion probiotic cultures. Feel lighter and more energized. Ultimate flora. More power to your gut. Quite a headline from the world health organization. A new report that announces flat out, bacon can cause cancer. Thats not all. Hot dog, sausages, red meat might be a problem, too. A startling warning sure to face some backlash. What does this all mean . Lets get the details. Lets bring in cnns senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen and chief of Breast Services at kettering sloan. Elizabeth, first to you, lay out what they are saying. Rarely are public Health Organizations this straightforward about something they say, plain and simple, processed red meats are a carcinogen. Lets take a look at exactly what they said. They said a 1. 7 ounce of processed meat, thats about one hot dog, can increase will increase your risk of colon cancer 18 . Now, its a small risk to begin with, but it would increase it 18 . They said when you look worldwide, processed meet is responsible for 34,000 cancer deaths. We got in touch with the folks in the meat industry. They say cancer is a complex diseases that even the best and brightest minds dont fully understand. No single food has been proven to cause or cure cancer. The available Scientific Evidence does not support a causal relationship between red or processed meat and any type of cancer. Doctor, what do you do with this . Does this mean no bacon, not ever, no hot dog, not ever . Or how much bacon can you eat . How many hot dogs can we have . I think were coming at this question a little from the wrong perspective. The question is, why would we eat bacon or hot dogs. Because its delicious. Its awesome. Thats right. And thats the only reason. So many things we do come with so many risks. This seems to come with a little risk, too. Elevated risk of colon cancer. I really dont think this is that much news. Weve known for years that highfat diets, obesity in general are associated with higher rates of cancer, especially colon cancer and a few others, also Heart Disease and diabetes and others. This is one more small negative to enjoying that particular kind of food. If you love it, you have to balance the risks and benefits. If you dont love it so much, no need to eat it. Thats a fascinating way of looking at it. It still hurts to hear bacon is going to kill me. Its not quite that its going to kill you. The estimated risk is 18 . One hot dog, 18 increase . Right. The thing is we usually look for doubling of risks or more when we look at associations. Cigarettes, eightfold increase. Genes that cause cancer, 10 to 80fold increases in risk. So, this is a very small negative. Something like maybe alcohol and Esophageal Cancer and so forth. So, i think that, unfortunately, in life theres no free ride. Thats a good perspective right there. You know, it does make me wonder as we sit here, talking about hot dogs, red meat, bacon, does everything we eat have some linkage to cancer . Definitely not. There are healthier diets for sure. In general a lower calorie diet, which is easiest to achieve with a lowfat diet, i. E. , a diet without so much meat, is going to be healthier in many important ways. Heart disease, diabetes and so forth. Remember against this background, obesity is the Fastest GrowingPublic Health problem we face in the whole western world. Its linked to high calorie foods, meats tend to be in that category. So, i think we have to balance these risks very carefully. You eat bacon . Very rarely, but, boy, i lover it. You eat red meat . Very rarely. What is your guidance . Theres no hard guidance. Youre asking me a personal question. I will have a bite of a cheeseburger during the summer. One a year . Unwilling to go there. Thank you for being there. You can have one bite of a cheeseburger in the three months of summer, okay . Just so you know. Straight from the doctors mouth. Great to see you, doctor. Thank you. We have breaking news out of afghanistan that we want to tell you about. A deadly 7. 5 magnitude earthquake rattled afghanistan this morning. Dozens are dead, including 12 school girls who were killed in a stampede as folks were trying to escape their school in areas new kabul, walls shook violently, things fell over, of course, and people were seen running into the streets in fear. Still questions this morning about why the boat sank in the first place. Witnesses say the water was calm but the boat might have been motoring fairly close to some rocks. The search continues today for that one person who remains missing. Still ahead for us, crime is up partly because police are nervous. That is from the head of the fbi who points to whats been called the ferguson effect with a rise in crime across america. Is he right . What else is he saying . Plus a woman drives into a crowded homecoming parade, killing several people, including a 2yearold child. Well speak live to a man who helped save his stepfather in the middle of all this chaos. And i quit smoking with chantix. I dont know that i can put into words how happy i was when i quit. Its like losing some baggage, i dont have to carry it around with me anymore. Chantix made it possible for me to quit smoking. Along with support, Chantix Varenicline is proven to help people quit smoking. Chantix definitely helped reduce my urge to smoke. Some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood, hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. Some had seizures while taking chantix. If you have any of these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away. Tell your doctor about any history of Mental Health problems, which could get worse or of seizures. Dont take chantix if youve had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. If you have these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away as some can be lifethreatening. Tell your doctor if you have heart or blood vessel problems, or develop new or worse symptoms. Get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. Decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. Most common side effect is nausea. Man, i love being a nonsmoker. Ask your doctor if chantix is right for you. Oh no. under his breath hey man hey peter. unenthusiastic oh. Ha ha ha joanne . Is that you . Its me. You dont look a day over 70. Am i right . Jingle jingle. If youre peter pan, you stay young forever. Its what you do. If you want to save fifteen percent or more on Car Insurance, you switch to geico. You make me feel so young. Its what you do. You make me feel so spring has sprung. Happening right now, a very strong statement coming from the head of the fbi. The director, james comey, saying publicly that police are nervous. That the increased Police Scrutiny that increased Police Scrutiny is partly to blame for a spike in Violent Crimes in the past year. Its being called the ferguson effect. Cnn justice reporter evan perez has the details. Reporter fbi director jim comey says at least part of the reason theres a surge in crime in some cities around the country could be because some officers are holding back. Now, this is called the ferguson effect because increased scrutiny on Police Tactics is causing some officers to be reluctant to arrest suspects. Now, he spoke at the university of chicago on friday and he talked these issues about race and the effect on police. Far more people are being killed in some of americas cities than in many years. Lets be clear. Far more people of color are being killed in america cities this year. Its not the cops doing the killing. Reporter not all Police Chiefs believe their officers are holding back. Some believe the rise in crime can be explained by the rise of synthetic drugs on the streets. Comey speaking to a convention of Police Chiefs in chicago. Well hear more about what he has to say. Evan perez, cnn, chicago. Our thanks to evan. A short time from now, the woman behind the wheel of a car that plowed into a crowd at an Oklahoma StateUniversity Homecoming parade is due in court. 25yearold adacia chambers has been charged with four counts of seconddegree murder. She was allegedly driving under the influence. The crash killed four people, including a 2yearold child. Nick valencia is there in stillwater, oklahoma, following the very latest. Everyone is looking later today when this woman will be in court. What more are you learning . Good morning, kate. Its about 2 30 p. M. Eastern when adacia chambers is expected to make her First Court Appearance accused of crashing into this homecoming parade over the weekend. Cnn obtained cell phone video from one of the witnesses and we should warn you its graphic video. It shows the moment when she flow plowed through the parade, a packed crowd, left four people dead, 50 people injured. Among the youngest victims, 2yearold gnash lucas. His father posting on facebook over the weekend, he misses his little buddy. Also some of those victims, marv and bonnie stone, marv a prestigious professor here. I spoke to one of his Family Friends twhowho was still very emotional. Im sure youve said your prayers. What do you pray for in a time like this . Well, we prayed in church yesterday for all the people involved in this, for all the victims and their families, it is people that are still in the hospital. We even prayed for the young lady in jail because very definitely needs help. Reporter that just speaks to the emotion here among those. Theyre even praying for those accused of killing their friends. Now, we did earlier catch up with the attorney for adacia chambers. He says he does not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in this, even though his client is charged with driving under the influence. Police have not said what they suspect her of being under the influence. He says Mental Health may have played a bigger role. He said when asked about the accident she did not appear to be remorseful, which to him indicated shes not in a proper state of mind. Shes also charged with four counts of seconddegree murder. Each of those counts carries up to ten years to life in prison. Nick valencia for us in stillwater. Thanks so much. Joining us now, though, on the phone is mark mcnit. His stepfather, leo schmitz, was one of the people hit in the crowd at the osu parade. Mark was with him, standing right there with him. Mark, are you there . Yes, maam. Thank you so much for getting on the phone with us. How is your stepfather doing today . Hes in Critical Condition at the Ou Medical Center there in oklahoma city. Not very stable. But he is alive. Obviously, were thinking about him and hoping for the best. You were in that crowd when the car inexplicably plowed in. I read you were with your stepfather watching, and all of a sudden you looked over and he was gone. What happened . Right. With everything thats going to be happening with the driver, weve been were probably not going to get into too many details, but in a nutshell, we were all watching the parade. We were at the end of the parade route. We were facing south on main street. The street behind us was blocked off with barricades. There was a Police Motorcycle behind us. That was part just having a good time. My stepfathers next to me. Were standing with a lot of people that we know talking. And then just this gush of wind really first thing i noticed was a gush of wind and then an explosion. Really the sound happened after this black thing flew through the crowd. And i i just assumed it was a motorcycle. I thought a motorcycle hit us. And then i looked to the right and my stepfather was gone. And i couldnt find him. I couldnt find my wife. My mother. Looking around, my mom started screaming. I could tell she was alive but she was hurt. I looked to my right, a lane or two over and on the sidewalk was my stepfather. And i took a step and i realized i had gotten hit in the back of my leg but not bad. I managed to get over to him and started cpr and started working on him, helping him out. Mark, when did it sit in what had actually happened . I mean, it sounds like absolute chaos afterward. And i think thats understandable. When did it set in for you . Yeah, i knew immediately something somebody or something drove through the crowd. I mean, it it just there were people that, you know, bodies everywhere. Didnt know what it was. Didnt realize, you know, there was a car involved. I didnt see any of that. This black thing came through the crowd. Pieces of fiberglass, you know, everywhere. I knew almost immediately that something came through the crowd. I didnt look back to see anything, you know, for just a few seconds youre in a days. A lot of people have said it. It was like a bomb going off. And you with all the screaming, i just had i knew to keep my composure. And once obviously nobody was 100 what was going on. We just knew we had to take care of loved ones and family and friends. A lot of people hurt, bleeding. It was a kay yotic scene. Our best to you, your family and your stepfather. Thank you very much for being with us. Thank you. Thank you. All right. Marco rubio, like you have not heard him before. He calls donald trump absurd. Marco rubio slamming donald trump. The senator says trumps immigration plan borders on the absurd. Senator rubio also says he is confident he will be the republican nominee for president. Rubio spoke exclusively with cnns special correspondent joining us right now. Jamie, a lot, a lot you got a lot out of him. We talked about a lot of things. Theres no question hes on the rise and theres no question hes taking the gloves off. We talked to him about donald trump, Hillary Clinton, and he is the most likely candidate. The gambling sites say hes the oddson favorite now. But we started by asking him why he still isnt the frontrunner in his home state of florida. I dont if you start paying attention to these polls in october, youll go crazy. Ive been up, ive been down. But youre the sitting senator in florida. Its a very unusual year. I think part of it is people are angry about the direction of our country. So heres the good news for marco rubio. Democrats say youre the triple threat. Youre the young, new, fresh face, youre great in debates, you are hispanic and you put florida into play. Thank you. Reporter so, why is it taking you so long to get traction . First of all, none of those things matter. Its Just Campaign talk. Politics today is covered almost like sports. You watch these teams, they have a really good game, theyre the top team in the world. The next week they have a bad team, its a disaster. Thats not the way the campaign works. Reporter the way the Rubio Campaign works is not glamorous. Behind the scenes he races from event to event, trying to raise money, trying to inch up in the polls and taking on donald trump. At the trump event there were protesters on immigration. And at the end, trump said, im going to win with hispanics. I love the hispanics. Why do you think when you hear him say things like its donald being donald. Thats what it is. Reporter he is the frontrunner, though. Is he more in tune with the Republican Party on this issue than you are . No. His rhetoric is a little louder but if you think about where he was six months ago, his position on immigration six months ago is not what hes saying now. What hes saying now borders on the absurd. Reporter jeb bush says donald trump has dangerous views on national security. Are you comfortable with the idea of donald trump with his finger on the button . Well, i wouldnt term it that way. I would say ultimately the next president of the United States on their first day in office must understand the threats that face this country and must have shown good judgment about what to do about those issues. Reporter are you comfortable the truth, as i said in the debate the last time on cnn, i dont believe up to this point in the campaign he has clearly outlined a deep understanding of the issues before this country in a serious way. And, obviously, he has time to change that. So right now hes not ready to be commander in chief. To this point in the campaign he has not proven an understanding of these issues or the preparation necessary to be commander in chief of the most powerful military force in the world. Reporter if hes the nominee, would you enthusiastically support him . Well, im going to support the republican nominee. Im comfortable its not going to be donald trump. Im increasingly confident its going to be me. So, i i feel good answering that question. Reporter marco rubio criticism over and over again that you keep missing votes on the senate floor. 43 of the votes. I know you say youre campaigning for president. But bernie sanders, rand paul, theyve missed fewer than 10 votes. Youre up at 59 or 60. Everyone needs to run their own campaign. I can tell you in the history of president ial politics, people have when theyve been running for politics in the senate, theyve missed votes. And im not missing votes because im on vacation. Reporter this many votes . Actually, this is lower than what other people have missed. Heres the other point. Im running for president so the votes they take in senate are actually meaningful again. A lot of these votes arent meaningful. Theyre not going to pass. Even if they did, the president would veto. Reporter the other day you got occupy the senate floor and you said, federal workers who dont show up should be fired. Thats not what i said. Reporter what did you say . I said federal workers who not performing at their jobs should be able to be fired. Should be held accountable for not performing. Reporter someone might say youre not showing up, youre not doing your job by voting. Not true. Not true. Because voting is not the only part of the senate job. The most important part a senator does is constituent service. Reporter wait a minute. Votes arent important of course theyre important. Reporter intelligence meetings i was there this tuesday. I got fully briefed and caught up on everything happening in the world. Im fully aware. We have a staffer assigned to intelligence. We get constant briefings. Reporter Hillary Clinton has had a pretty good two weeks. She had saturday night live, did well in the debates, went through 11 hours of the hearings. If it is a faceoff, marco rubio Hillary Clinton, how formidable is she . Well, shes be the democratic nominee, someone who comes from a political dynasty and that in and of itself will bring fundraising capabilities and so forth. People may think she has a good week. I think this was the week it was proven she lied about benghazi. Reporter youre 44. Shes turning 68. Is age in a campaign your advantage or her advantage . I dont think the buy logical age of the candidates is the issue. I think its your ideas. Reporter are her ideas too old . Absolutely. Not just her ideas but the ideas of the political left are completely outdated. Reporter the differences will be striking if they do match up. Rubio and his wife have four Young Children and he will stress being the son of immigrants, a bartender and a maid. That said, like Hillary Clinton and donald trump, rubio is open to also having his moment on saturday night live. Donald trump is going to host saturday night live. Yeah. Reporter have you been invited . Do you want to do it . I dont think ive been invited. Well see if it makes sense. Im more curious to see if theyll ever play me on saturday night live. Want to make sure its the right person. Reporter who do you want . I have no idea. Someone said mario lopez, bring him on as a guest or something. I have no idea. I have not thought about that. So, we did a Little Research on who has missed more votes running for president. President obama, right . So maybe its actually a good thing to miss votes. Im just kidding. I couldnt believe he was practically begging saturday night live to do something with him. Someone play me on saturday night live, please, please. That means youve arrived. There you go. All these videos, the campaign puts out all these videos of him playing football, tossing a football around. What does he do for fun . What kind of guy is he not in senate or campaigning . Later on today we have the second half of my interview and you hear all about what books he likes, what movies he likes, what he was like in high school. Spoiler alert. What . Hes a late bloomer, lets just say. You know what, he was actually very nice. He said when he had to pay for his tuition going to college, all of a sudden, he started working very hard in school. We also had a long discussion, much of which i was left out of. What . What his Favorite Music is. Now, ive interviewed 50 cent, ala 50. Im not completely out of it but he gave me a lesson in electronielectri electronic dance music, deejays and sampling. Okay. Stay tuned. Club guy, is that all right. Did you go to a club together . You can see in this video kind of the chaos going on. You can see barefoot men running through a dark room, gunfire crackling in the background. The video was filmed by a kurdish soldier using a helmet camera. One u. S. Soldier died during this operation to save these hostages from what they believed at the time was imminent mass execution. Fare fareed, its interesting, the tragedy is a u. S. Soldier was killed. This is an example, the u. S. Has troops inside iraq right now, thousands of troops inside iraq right now. And some, as we see here, are engaged in combat operations. This war in many ways not over. Well, this is something that people often forget. Theres no way to have advisers. Youre right, we have 3,500, i think is the total in iraq, theres no way to have advisers in an ongoing intense military operation, especially against an insurgency where your advisers are not participating because part of how you train these troops is you accompany them places. You know, this is not like the advisers sit in classrooms, give lectures and then the troops go out and do it. A lot of teaching is showing. So, theyre actively engaged. You know, im sure the troops did an im sure the troops did an extraordinary job. It does remind you, though, that you can do all that and that was a heroic effort and a successful one. It still doesnt mean that you have been able to build a stable, functioning, legitimate government in iraq. Think of afghanistan. Weve been there 14 years doing this kind of thing. It still doesnt you know, theres a separate issue, which is, can you stand up a government that people believe in . This also, then, adds to the important context of this fascinating and very important interview you did with the former british prime minister, tony blair, on the decision on many things, but also on the decision to go into iraq. Heres a little bit of the interview. That i apologize for the fact that the intelligence we received was wrong. By the way, for some of the mistakes in planning, and certainly, our mistake in our understanding of what would happen once you remove the regime, but i find it hard to apologize for removing saddam. I think even from today in 2015, it is better that hes not there than if he is there. Fascinating. And he even goes on to say that there was some truth i think he said it that way in criticism that the 2003 invasion led to the rise of isis there. The whole thing, he was more reflective than i expected him to be. He got uncomfortable when i asked him some of these questions. Clearly, theres a mixture of, i think feeling tired about being asked them, but for some reason in this case, he decided to reflect on it in a fuller way, and actually apologized. The most interesting part, i thought, was actually his admission that the invasion probably laid the ground for isis, because that is, of course, extraordinarily relevant. Right. And its relevant in two senses. One, you know, theres a question of what caused isis. Two, why did isis rise . Because you took the head off a regime, off and it turned out, the whole country fell apart, and it gave rise to the islamic terrorism. Well, that is again what we faced in syria. Those who want to intervene have to acknowledge that if you get rid of assad, there will probably be chaos, even more chaos than there is now. There will be chaos in damascus. There will be a free for all in terms of trying to get a control of that country. And in that environment, you could well see, you know, more brutality and more ethnic clenning than weve seen before. In fact, there is a candidate right now saying just that, a leading candidate, donald trump. Flat out asked this weekend if we would have been better off, the world would have been better off with saddam hussein, Moammar Gadhafi still in power, and he essentially says, yes. He says that none of this bad stuff would have happened had they remained in power. It is a plausible scenario to say, look, you had a stable but very repressionivrepressive, cr the middle east, and if you would have left it alone, we would have been better off. The truth of the matter is i think somewhere in between. Because if you think about it this way, and blair says this in our documentary, he says, look, in iraq, we toppled the regime and we got chaos and islamic terrorism. In syria, we did nothing, and we ended up with chaos and islamic terrorism. You know, that region seems to be in so much turmoil that its not clear what exactly would have worked. And in trumps case, as we know, he sort of contradicts himself every week, because sometimes he says i would go in and defeat isis, i would crush them. On another day, he says, oh, we should stay right out of it. I think in a weird way, hes a good marketer, hes a good salesman. Americans are confused and conflicted. Theres a part of, i think, of us that wants to go in and do something and destroy this very evil force, isis. Another part that says, just get the hell out of here. Did tony blair have a prescription of what he would like to see happen now that you know, instead of looking back, looking forward . I think blair is very thoughtful, very intelligent, and essentially unrepented in this sense, that he is a forwardleaning person on these issues. He thinks we should be more engaged in syria, probably intervene more. I think that he believes that at the end of the day, these forces have been unleashed, no matter what we do. Weve got to fight them militarily. Hes also devoted a lot of his time to fighting the ideas. He has a Faith Foundation that does all that kind of thing. You know, tony blair is a great progressive liberal, but on these issues, i think hes sort of closer to the u. S. Neo conservatives than anyone else.
