Too mind blowing so you move on. You play past it. Tonight, there is far more from that summit that cannot be brushed aside so easily because it concerns legitimately serious stuff and because of what it says or continues to say about the president. It all came out today in a series of press encounters that saw the president make news on any fronts and explore all of them tonight. First, though, to set the stage when we left you on friday, the president had just departed for france having sent wall street tumbling by leveling new tariff threats against china. Then he suggested he might have regrets about that. Then his staff said no, his only regret was not being tougher. And then this morning he got less tough. Confusion aside on china at least the situation has not devolved in the last few days as far as we can tell. The countries are apparently still talking, though, as you will see the question of who precisely is doing the talking and at what level remains in dispute. Here is the president this morning. So weve had many calls, secretary mnuchin is here and youve had many calls over the last 24 hours but certainly over the last 48 hours weve had many calls, not just one. This isnt one. These are high level calls. They want to make a deal. By the way, i think a deal will be made. But they want to make a deal. So the chinese are saying there werent the chinese are not saying that. There were phone calls, sir, mr. President. Numerous calls. Again, the Chinese Foreign minute t minu minute nice trisaid they were not aware of calls and said there was communication and would not when pressed directly say there was any phone call let alone many highlevel calls raising questions whether the president embellished his account. He did clearly embellish this. First lady has got to know kim jongun and would agree with me he is a man with a country that has tremendous potential. And point of fact, she has never met the north korean dictator, ever. A spokesperson later said that because the president confides in the first lady so much, he feels that she has come to know kim, too. As for other dictators whom the first lady has met, the president once again took the dictator side of things. Here is some of what he said about Vladimir Putin and russia which was kicked out of what was then the g 8 for annexing crimea. Listen to how he explains what russia did as he argues the case to invite putin back. They should be in. They were a president im not blaming him. A lot of bad things happened with president putin and president obama. One of the things that happened was as you know, what happened in with a very big area, a very, very big and important area in the middle east with a red line drawn and then president obama decided that he was not going to do anything about it. You cant draw red lines in the sand. You just cant do it. The other was in ukraine having to do with a certain section of ukraine you know very well where it was sort of taken away from president obama. Not taken away from President Trump, taken away from president obama. Keeping them honest, not even Vladimir Putin has put it that way and to make it perfectly clear, he didnt take crimea away from any u. S. President , he took it away from ukraine and penalized by the g 7 including the United States, those are simply facts which the president disregards in favor of the story hes telling the world. President obama was not happy that this happened because it was embarrassing to him, right . It was very embarrassing to him, and he wanted russia to be out of the, what was called the g 8. And that was his determination. He was out smarted by putin. He was out smarted. President putin out smarted president obama. Wait a minute. And i can understand how president obama would feel. He wasnt happy and they are not in for that reason. Again, that is factually untrue, as was this. Mr. President , were you able to attend the working section earlier . Were having it in a little while. By the time the president said that, the meeting had already taken place as you heard. His press secretary explaining it by saying quote, the president had scheduled meetings and by laterals with germany and india so a Senior Member went instead. And you should believe her and not your lying eyes or this lying video which clearly shows the leaders of india and germany, the ones the president was supposed to be meeting with in the meeting that he skipped and right there is the empty spot at the table set aside for him, not that he needs to hear lectures on the environment because he says no one knows more about it than him. Im an environmentalist. I have done more Environmental Impact statements probably than anybody thats i guess, i can say definitely because ive done many, many, many of them. More than anybody thats been president or Vice President or anything even close to president. And i think i know more about the environment than most people. Keeping them honest, filing Environmental Impact statements does not make you an expert on the environment, it makes you a potential polluter who has to show authorities how you plan to build something without hurting the environment, Something Like a golf course or as the presidencys it, the site of next years summit. Close to the a foggy decision but right next to the airport right there meaning a few minutes away. Its a great place. Its got tremendous ackerage and buildings with 50 to 70 units so each delegation has its own build. Seven various delegations that can have their own building. A lot they can have buildings for the press. Very big. Great conference facility. Were thinking about it. They love the location of the hotel and like the fact its next to the airport for convenience. Wow from the sound of that you would think the president was back in private life plugging one of his properties. And youd be right. He is. The Trump NationalDoral Country Club somehow of all the Summit Locations in the entire country, the single best one is the one the president and his family own. The one that hasnt been doing so well lately and could really use a boost, after all, its got tremendous acre rage like camp david and like des moines or st. Louis and has a hotel. How does that happen . A hotel and an airport nearby, too. Not that the president is concerned has his own aids have reportedly been that in addition to appearing to be a massive conflict of interest, it actually would be one. But he says hes the one making the sacrifice. Ill tell you what, ive spent and i think i will in a combination of loss and opportunity, probably it will cost me anywhere from 3 to 5 billion to be president and the only thing i care about is this country. Couldnt careless, otherwise i wouldnt have done it. People have asked me what do you think it costs . The opportunity i used to get a lot of money to make speeches. Now i make speeches all the time. You know what i get . Zippo . Zippo. Nothing. That is in hurricane country, nothing that a few nukes couldnt handle. Plenty to talk about john kirby that served as state and Defense Department spokesperson and former republican president ial candidate and u. S. Senator Rick Santorum a cnn commentator and Kirsten Powers and columnist for usa today. Youve been on trips like this before. Im just curious, what does the world, what do World Leaders take away when they see the president do this . The string of falsehoods, the fanciful statements that drift off into the ocho blblivian. Whats the take away . Its a view they have come to have over the last couple years he cant be relied upon. His word and our word. American leadership is also cannot be relied upon in the world and working around President Trump. They are working around the United States. You saw that play out well here at the g 7. Kirsten, to me the small lies are almost inexplicable than the big lies. Why say that your wife has, you know, come to know kim jongun and grow front of him when the two have never met . Im inclined to ask why does he do that but how could you know . Whats the impact on that . Does it tell you that he does . Well, i mean, i dont the question is does he think that shes met him . Thats what comes to my mind. I dont know. Is it something thats necessarily a lie or is he confused and he believes that that happened, even though thats something so momentum it seems like you would remember that. I think the biggest problem with this is its an embarrassment to the United States. I mean, watching that press conference, you know, as john kirby was just talking about, the other leaders are looking at this and seeing this and they cant possibly take it seriously and i would assume that is a lot, causes them a lot of concern because the United States has been a country that has had a very Important Role in terms of leadership in the world. Senator santorum, there are big poor ten shows things at stage right now around the world and perhaps number one in that list is this trade war that the president is in with china. Do you have any question from friday to today, from friday when he threatened to increase tariffs, from friday when he called president xi the evnemy f the United States to today where he was looking for a way to deescalate and pull back. Do you think the president is backing off . I think the president is responding to the chinese advice that said they wanted in this trade dispute, they dont want escalation, they want to calm the resolution. Thats what china always says. Thats standard language. The president is trying to respond to that. Look, i think the president has done i believe a very good job in getting china to the table here. This is, as i said many times, lots of administrations had the opportunity to take on china and they have known for decades it is infiltrating and stealing technology through espionage, i mean, they are bad actors on the stage and i dont blame president obama. He had a recession. He had to deal with it. But you go back, the president clinton had opportunities and a great economy to take on china and didnt do it. The president has a good economy and this is the right time to take on china. Will it have an impact on the u. S. Economy . Probably some. You have record unem loiploymend growth and this is the time to win the longterm gain and the president is doing that and i give him high marks for trying. I dont think anyone is arguing china is a bad actor. The discussion is whether the methods are the most effective way to move china off of that and also, who is paying for it. Kirsten, you wanted to get in there . No, i mean, i just i think the question is look, if it worked, i think, i dont know anybody that wouldnt support it. China is a problem for a long time and i think the Clinton Administration actually did do a lot to challenge china but its a tough nut to crack. So i think the question is how was this going make things better and i think that the impact on the economy potentially putting us into a recession is a pretty steep price to pay. I think its over stating the case. I dont think were near a recession. We had over 3 growth if it knocks it down to 2 , were back to where president obama was for eight years. Lets look at the reality the president is doing something maybe untraditional and i understand people dont like sole of t some of the tactics but hes outwardly fighting the chinese and well wait and see where we can get the 150page agreement back on the table with real teeth to stop china. The results matter and so far there havent been any. One of the things the president said today when asked directly about the fact you call xi an enemy on monday and today a great friend, hes like thats just the way i negotiate. Thats just the way it is. Yeah, i dont know anything about negotiating trade deals but it is this is the whiplash effect in what is making the market uncertain and instead did and worrying our allies and partners. Back to what we were talking about a few minutes ago, i agree that President Trump and administration have been tougher on china and military speaking, i applaud what they have been doing to do freedom navigation operations. I think he would have found a very welcome audience to some of these ideas at the g 7 if he had taken the opportunity but didnt do that. He almost went to france with no agenda and let macron and the rest run it and he could have gotten solidarity. They are worried about the trade war and where its going and tariffs and i understand that. There are things with respect to china that the europeans agree with him on about intellectual property theft and the South China Sea and he missed an opportunity to broaden this discussion about china with allies and partners and would have been sympathetic to moves. As everyone departs or departed the g 7, do you think macron is breathing a sigh of relief. Breathing a sigh of relief and patting himself on the back. He handled President Trump masterfully and had a private lunch. He deferred to him about bringing zarif into the discussion and i think when it comes to iran he actually got President Trump today to say hes still willing to meet with rouhani and issue any idea of regimetehran. Macron should be commended what he got President Trump to sign up to. Thank you very much. I want to drill down deeper into the question of holding the next g 7 at the president s golf course. They went to places all over the country and they came back and said this is where i would like to be. We had military people doing it, secret Service People doing it. We had people that really understand what its about. Its not about me. Its about getting the right location. I think its very important. Back with Rick Santorum and Kirsten Powers and Top White House ethics lawyer in the George W BushAdministration Currently teaches at the university of minnesota and i want to start with you. You think the president hosting the g 7 at his own resort would be illegal and violate the emoulment clause. Two District Courts have cases brought against donald trump to pivot exactly this type of thing. Those cases were later dismissed because the plaintiffs were ruled not to have standing but the interpretation of the clause stands this would be illegal if he takes any money for hotel rooms, food, beverages, golfing or anything else, it would be a clear violation of the United States constitution. Second, hes using his presidency to promote his own business. Thats a conflict of interest entirely apart from the emoulment clause of the constitution and he showed no interest in the key topics of the g 7 meeting including climate change. Hes not willing to attend the meetings, although he totes himself as an environmentalist because he filled out statements for golf courses but doesnt want to bother to show up for serious discussion but just wants to use this to tote his business. Its an embarrassment for the United States that this is going on. Senator santorum, aside from legalities, what about being swampy . Well, i dont agree with the third point that was just made, but i think the first two are legitimate points. The fact is that the president should not be doing this. It would be a violation of the law as far as i understand it. I hope this is the last time he mentions it. I hope if anybody who did suggest to him, i mean, its just remarkable that someone would suggest that it would be held at his at doral. Again, i hope thats not true and if it is true, i hope they put on end to it quickly. Rick, if you were working until the white house, at one point you were rumored to be never happened. If someone came to you, white house staffer or the president himself and said hey, lets hold the g 7 at doral hell no. Hell no. What does it tell you then that the president is entertaining this . Look, i think this is, you know, there is a good and bad that comes with everybody. This is one of the things i scratch my head and wonder why the president doesnt see the obvious not just conflict of interest but how it could be used by opponents to undermine some of the good things that hes trying to accomplish there and again, im disappointed that he even brought it up and i hope that its the last we hear of it. I dont think kirsten it will be the last we hear of it. I can almost guarantee its not the last we hear of it. Yeah, i find it a little hard to believe that some secret Service People came up with this idea. I think the president probably came up with the idea, and its to your point, even if it was completely legal, completely on the up and up, it would be inappropriate. It would be very swampy. You are not you are supposed to as president be always completely above reproach and you shouldnt be trying to financially benefit from a meeting, an official meeting of the United States. Richard, how is this different . Youre so people can understand this and understand the distinctions here, george w. Bush hosted at crawford and at their homes. What makes this different . Hes making money off it. George w. Bush didnt charge rent to foreign governments at crawford. If donald trump wants to comp everyone and invite them in free of charge, give them rooms and drinks and food and golf and whatever entertainment he provides assuming its legal, that wouldnt violate the emoulment clause. We hear they want to use the facility as a commercial facility, presumably the foreign governments pay for it. Thats a direct violation of the clause and nothing to do with president s inviting foreign leaders to their own homes whether it be crawford or the compound for the kennedy family. Kirsten, i covered a lot of campaigns and one thing has a bipartisan impact in any campaign or party and thats when a candidate has the stink of corruption or has the stink of trying to pad his or her own pocket. It just hurt as candidate no matter what party its in. Im curious if the democrat should be more focused on this aspect of President Trump than other things that they are focused on. Im sure it will be one of the many things they focus on but i think that people have i mean, i dont think there is a secret. This is who donald trump is. So much of what he does is constantly with an eye towards making money if he can figure out a way to profit his family can profit off the presidency now or in the future. I think a lot of the things he does in terms of his relation very bizarre relationships with various World Leaders have a lot to do with his interest in his future business interest. I think it certainly is something they should focus on. I dont think it will be a center piece but obviously something thats highly problematic. The reality is that the president look, doral is not doing well. Why . Because a lot of people dont like donald trump and not using his facilities. I think the president paid a price. Thats a story to be told, too. He doesnt do himself any good by doing things like this and like i said, please, mr. President , stop. What if they tell you about his priorities, rick, that keep cant stop . Look, i think hes a promoter and thats what he does. I think thats just who he is and its inappropriate. He shouldnt do it. But i dont think that this president , i disagree with kirsten. I dont think hes here to make money off the presidency and losing money and as well he should. Ist an important job. They havent furnished proof about losing money but go ahead, kirsten. If he is, its his own fault, right . You dont lose money because youre the president. You lose money because you say racist things for example or you, you know, accuse all jews who vote for democrats for being disloyal. These are things he alienates people with so, you know, its not a forgone conclusion that being president would necessarily harm your business. Rick, were going to have to go. Senator Bernie Sanders was in pittsburgh where he picked up a key Union Endorsement and got a boost from mamouth university. He was in a threeway tie with a former Vice President down 13 points since the last survey. That said, an average of several other recent polls show that former Vice President joe biden is in a much better position and these are National Polls were talking about in the primary Campaign Goes state by state, still the movement does bear a closer look. Joining us for that, van jones, former season your Obama White House advisor and host of Cnns Van Jones show and with all the disclaimers including this poll has a margin of error 6 that is quite a bit, if youre part of the Joe Biden Campaign and youve based this election on electability, how concerned are you that there is this poll out today which doesnt show you winning, which is supposed to be his thing . Listen, this is not a good poll for biden and i do think that it speaks you have to look at the other polls, that stuff. Listen, first of all, look at the strength of the progressive block. You know, when you put sanders and warren together, thats almost half the party going for candidates that are extremely, extremely progressive. This kind of cuts against the idea that the only thing that matters is electability. People may be recalculating what makes someone electable. The traditional wisdom is youre electable if youre more appealing to moderates and get independents. That narrative was carrying biden along. Now youre starting to see people make the case its going to be somebody who will be el t electable if you can electrify. You have to rally up the base and got to be able to bring new people in, young people in and give a reason to come to the polls and under that rational, Elizabeth Warren looks attractive and certainly bernie is able to hang on. Fy we if i were in the biden camp, i would be concerned about the fact hes holding his own in the top three against a whole bunch of other people but look at that progressive block. Lets talk about Elizabeth Warren for a second. There is a focus on the crowds, crowd size is often controversial when youre covering elections because it doesnt always mean that the person is generating tons and tons of support but she had 12,000 at a rally, some 15,000 at a rally in seattle. A lot of people are showing up to Elizabeth Warren events and you combine that with the strong showing and this poll and other polls have shown her consistently inching up. What does that tell you . Shes the most impressive person on the scene right now because you got to remember, she was written off for dead. She slipped on the pocahontas banana peel several times. She released her dna stuff. That made it worse. People were not talking about her six or seventh months ago. Shes clawed her way back and climbed her way back. No less than the rock on the season premiere of ballers was reading an Elizabeth Warren book. That gives you a sense of how far shes broken through to the culture. They were tweeting back and forth. She was making enroads everywhere and not making mistakes. Shes really, really doing something extraordinary right now. The warren sanders, you call id t it a block. I think their collision doesnt line up one to one. I think that Bernie Sanders does better about noncollege white men and she does better with College Educated white women and not a one for one lineup but how long do you think they can survive this mutual nonaggression path they have now . Look, i dont know. It cant last forever. So far they are benefitting from each other because they are stretching out the window of ideas. They are stretching the over tone window ideas off the table were main stream. They have both been pulling on that end of the rope together. At a certain point, they have to turn around and square off. Right now they are doing that to the detriment of the moderates. The moderates have to divide the pie up while biden holds on to a big chunk. The rest are way down. You do see movement from cory booker starting to climb and creep a little bit there. Thats interesting. But everything else, i mean, it looks like Elizabeth Warren, the summer of Elizabeth Warren. Next question, van, the cut off for the neck debate is tomorrow. Well have ten candidates. Do you think thats where the race is now or are there fewer that have a legitimate shot . We all know its probably down to four or five. Somebody can do Something Interesting but right now looking at the top three, top four, something amazing would have to happen to change that. Van jones, great to have you. Thank you very much for being with us tonight. Glad to be here. Joining us now was republican president ial candidate joe walsh. Thanks for being with us. We had a chance to talk a lot over the last two weeks. Good to be with you. You apologized for the past statements, which is notable. I want to ask you this question, given that you have apologized, why do you think people should overlook your past reck rhetori not the president s . Just some context. In the last six years, ive tweeted 40,000 times. There are probably a few hundred tweets we would sketcratch our d about. I dont apologize about every tweet. Those tweets you mentioned at the beginning, im a big free speech supporter and i like political correctness. I should have a right to say white people are this and christians are this. Im a pretty equal opportunity offender when it comes to free speech but to your broader point, no, everything ive tweeted, i own. And if there is a tweet that i need to apologize for, john, i will. Ill own it and regret it. You said today, one of the things you said today is you tweeted racist things in the past, but you dont think it makes you a racist . No, i think, john, i think were all a little racist. Weve all said racist things. Ill bet if you and i went through everybodys twitter feed, well find things that are objectionable and offensive. I think we all have. I know when i look back at some of my tweets over the years, because i was so outspoken, yeah, ive tweeted some racist things on purpose, no. Lazy no, no, no, john, i didnt say that because i meant it. Whites are privileged. I used that as an example and ive used that as an example with any racial group. I dont believe that. The point i was making in america, you should have a right to say anything. You are what you pretend to be so be careful what you pretend to be. I get what youre trying to say but some people may think different. You apologized that and explained that and youre sitting here running for president tonight. We looked at your Campaign Website for policy positions. There isnt anything up there for policy right now. Policywise, how would you be different than President Trump . Great question because understand, im running against trump because hes morally unfit. Period. Its about trump. Its not about the issues. Its about trump. But on the issues, i believe in wall trump hasnt built a wall. I believe in border security, trump botched the border. The border is a bigger mess the president on immigration. If you want to call that to the right. I dont believe trump is anywhere to the left or right. Trump is only about trump. I went to washington ten years ago to do something about the debt and deficits. This president is increasing the debt more than obama did. Would you back off the tax cut . Well, i yes. That was a horrible tax cut. I would have probably i believe in cutting taxes that was a bad tax cut. I would have given a middle class payroll tax cut. Tariffs are horrible policies. Americans, farmers, everybody is hurt by this right now. I could go on. Yes, i may i believe in limited government and balanced budgets, thats not what this guy is. Youve been in the race for 24 hours, not even. 36 hours . Feels like a long time. Whats the impact . Ive been curious about this because youre a conservative radio talk show host and i have a hard time believing that your audience will like the idea that youre running against the president so what is the impact been on your radio show . 80 to 90 of my audience supports the president. I just found out i lost my National Radio show so thats gone. But i figured that might happen, john. You lost it why . I dont know why. I just got a notice before i came in the studio. Liberty, liberty, liberty, liberty al judge in oklahoma has ordered Johnson Johnson to pay 572 million for pushing doctors to prescribe opioids and downplay the risk of addiction. The state said it helped fuel the opioid crisis, were talking about Johnson Johnson, which also has a pharmaceutical division, and Johnson Johnson has denied any wrongdoing. I want calls the judges decision flawed and will appeal the ruling. Chris cuomo joins us now with more on this and a preview of whats coming up on cuomo prime time. Let me ask you this. Johnson johnson says that their product is government approved and fda regulated, so why, then, are they being charged and forced to pay a fine over it . Well, there two answers to that. The answer, in fact, is because the judge found in oklahoma they violated the state nuisance law. And theres a very interesting reckoning of it. Obviously, the judge accepted the attorney general, the states case that nuisance law doesnt have to be in the confines of messing with our property. My dog messing around in your garden, creating a nuisance, of trespass, and one way or another, that this can qualify, too, because its affecting peoples enjoyment of life. The other reason is, if you read the facts here in the findings, how they sold and marketed the drugs in convincing doctors that what they think is addiction really isnt and they need to prescribe more in those cases, not less. And its really a solicitation, its really a fraud, but those are harder cases to make. So the question then becomes, will it stick . Weve never seen a case like this. And if it sticks, john, and companies can be held responsible for their role in addiction, things could change. Quickly, what do you have coming up on cuomo prime time . Were going to go big on this. Because i think its really important. The piece of the responsibility of the companies has always been big. We also have matt schlapp, leading conservative voice. Global money being pledged to help those affected by huge wildfires can burning in brazils amazon rain forests. The g7 nations will set up a 20 million emergency fund. And the Environmental Foundation created in part by actor lee nar dproe dicaprio has pledged 5 million. Meanwhile, cnns nick paton walshs team recorded this video during an areal tour of the fire. Brazilian Officials Say every minute the fires destroy one and a half soccer fields. Nick paton walsh joins us now with the very latest. So, nick, youve seen how bad it is. How can anyone begin to tackle this . Reporter well, it is extraordinary. Often, you cant see the problem because of how dense the smoke is. And we flew over areas that we have only reached by getting over them in a plane. There are no roads connecting them. So this operation, when it gets underway, and we see Brazilian Military cargo planes above us is going to have to be enormous or perhaps depend on some sort of natural response like behave consistent rain. Theres been drops of it and supporters of president Jay Bolsonaro have tried to suggest on social media that that might be tackling the problem, but it simply wont. 34,000 troops here will need massive additional support. Brazil has been willing to accept israeli help, but it seems to be shunning the 20 million or so that the worlds seven richest nations managed to scramble together. A pretty pitiful sum. Not sure that will even be allowed into the country. Shunning the 20 million. They dont want the 20 million . Reporter it seems that way. He didnt specifically say that, but in a speech he gave to journalists, he was very angry at the media and also at president emmanuel macron, with whom hed been in a bit of a spat all day, ever since the brazilian president commented on an offensive meme about the french president s wife, and the french president said hopefully brazil would get a president up to the job. No real love between brazil and paris. The question moving forward is whether that stops brazil from letting people in who might help tackle the fires. You get the sense that brazil is trying to downplay the problem at this point, but also plays to bols n bolsonaros base. Why are the fires so bad right now . Some say its particularly bad because of the dry season, but most activists and most scientists who have looked at this problem outside of brazilian government circles say very clearly, this is down to defore deforestation. This is because so much land has been cleared, so much license has been given to forests to create Agricultural Land that, in fact, thats dried the ground out, kept less moisture in it, and made it more susceptible to fires if they occur. And others say, too, fires are the first step in deforestation, burn the land, clear it, put cattle on it, make your money and your sell your beef. Theres a process happening that could permanently damage the ecosystem of the amazon. We all depend on it for our oxygen. Is it reaching a Tipping Point where the damage caused becomes irrevocable and causes a selffulfilling cycle of fires every year. Thank you so much for being there and showing us whats going on.
