After months of watching republican candidates tear each other apart, witnessing the gop tear itself apart over donald trump now seems to be the democrats turn. More on that from jeff zeleny. We are in until the last ballot is cast. Reporter tonight, the question for Bernie Sanders is what comes after the ballots are cast. The Democratic Party is going to have to make a very, very profound an important decision. Reporter he is frustrated at the Democratic Party and the mu. It can do the right thing and open its doors and welcome into the party people who are prepared to fight for real economic and social change. Reporter a split decision in tuesdays primaries, sanders winning oregon, but narrowly losing kentucky to Hillary Clinton. Democrats, anxious to join forces and take on donald trump suddenly seem more divided than ever. Now some people say weve got a steep hill to climb to do better, and that is absolutely true. Reporter this is why. Clinton is only 88 delegates away from clinching the nomination. Sanders needs nearly 10 times as many delegates and superdelegates. More than are on the table in nine remaining contests, but that hasnt stopped sanders from going hard after clinton. Before we will have the opportunity to defeat donald trump, were going to have to defeat secretary clinton. Reporter at a rally today in san jose, sanders only had one rival in mind, trump. He made no mention of clinton. There are many people who are concerned that donald trump may become president of the United States. That will not happen. I agree, Bernie Sanders should stay in the race, thats what i said all along until the last vote is counted. Reporter many sanders supporters arent sure the party will come together. I know a lot of people would, even if she gets the candidacy, would refuse to vote for her because they dont believe in anything she stands for, shes two faced, a liar, and they would rather vote for someone else or do a write in ballot. First of all, were the democrats so we argue and feel strongly about things, so im not surprised, this is coming to the end of a very emotional, hard fought campaign. Do you blame sanders for not tam ping things down . He should run as long as he thinks he should. If he wants to run until the last ballot is cast, thats his right. It could be better in the general election, folks that want to vote for Bernie Sanders will have had the opportunity to do that. Obviously people need to behave in a dignified and civil fashion regardless of what party theyre at and all of the gatherings, but i have no doubt this is typical end of campaign emotion and feeling and that come philadelphia we will be a united party. Jonathan, do you agree with feinstein about what could happen at the convention . First thing i want to say, i do remember 1968. Forthcoming. I was sitting in detention, which tells you the kind of person i was the morning of the general election. I remember clearly the close election. I was sitting there, i got in big trouble. I remember this very clearly as if it was yesterday. No, i dont think its going to be like 1968. I think Dianne Feinstein with all due respect is overheating it. I think we have to dial back the rhetoric a little bit about this. I agree with christine to some extent, and president obama and joe biden said that today in different ways, they said Bernie Sanders should continue to run the race. Obama himself recalled in 2008 and said it is like deja vu all over again, very familiar. I think there are, though, differences between the two. I think it will be heated, not necessarily divisive or split the party, but there are fundamental differences between the Clinton Campaign and what we view, what we need, the political revolution. It is not like most nominations before, when there are no differences and everybody came together. This is a significant difference about what we think the Democratic Party should be. There should be healthy debate about that. I think the unifying thing that will bring us out after the convention is two words, donald trump. What Bernie Sanders said on tv is true. I think he believes it strongly, so does hillary. I dont think the democrats are ready quite to move yet to donald trump. From talking to the Sanders Campaign, they see a point in going to the convention the way they feel they were treated Bernie Sanders could go to the floor and say to his people by acclamation, we are going to fall in line with Hillary Clinton like she did with barack obama in 2008. Just seems like a real stretch. The sanders folks say can senator sanders lead all his people to that conclusion . Not necessarily by next week. We have seen this time and time again. Even in primaries where there were clear ideological differences like Jesse Jackson and michael dukakis. You even see it benefit donald trump. Republicans are coming home, democrats are coming home. We are in a highly partisan era in american politics. You saw it with Hillary Clinton supporters. One at a time, go ahead. He will exact leverage in terms of the platform, but as we move closer and closer to november, the prospect of a donald trump presidency, i agree, will ultimately bring most of those people back. One, we are maybe too much in the cable tv social media whiplash right now about all of this. I think yes, theres real Division Within the Democratic Party over two candidates with somewhat different visions who will come together. No doubt in my mind. I think one thing we are ignoring, Bernie Sanders sees the narrow pass that he could win the nomination. Let me lay it out. That is she, Hillary Clinton is not going to have a majority in all likelihood of the pledge delegates going into the convention and shes as polls show increasingly damaged goods as viewed by many democrats. If there were some bombshell, not an indictment, but something coming out of the server investigation, some kind of damaging information, Bernie Sanders and his people see him as the beneficiary of this and he could still be the nominee. So lets not declare it over. Theres nothing to indicate that will happen. I am not saying, christine, that it is going to happen, im saying this is maybe, and i know a little bit here, how some of the sanders people view it as game not over. I also understand why senator sanders may see it as game not over and i understand why he wants to remain part of the discussion about the platform and you said senator sanders wants something. Everyone who is in the position senator sanders is in wants something and he cares about the issues. But theres a lot of clinton supporters that hear jeff weaver on air on one hand criticizing the way they were treated in nevada and at the same time saying we dont condone disruptions and things like that. I think if you go back eight years ago, there was an enormous number of Hillary Clinton supporters who were angry, who were unhappy, who didnt like how the campaign was treated, said no way. First of all, the list trump put out, you know a lot of these folks, who is on it, what does it mean. This is a social conservative dream team, very accomplished, very intelligent, very conservative judges who if you want the Supreme Court court to overturn roev wade, if you want them not to recognize gay and transgender rights, these are the justices you want. This is a group ted cruz would be happy to nominate and vote for. Margaret, as a conservative, what does the list make you think of trump. I am a conservative that runs an lgbt organization and helps them navigate those issues, theres a conservative case for individual freedom. This is a dog whistle to social conservatives, to me i think the lesson we learn from this primary is that you dont have to dog whistle value voter issues for the nomination. The conservative movement would have us believe you have to run on values voters issues. These are ones you appoint to the Supreme Court, thats not the case. Donald trump won. I dont see why he feels shackled or tied. He needs to win the votes mitt romney plus. So clearly what his advisers are telling him or what Reince Priebus is reported as saying, you need to do something to shore up conservative voters who may not vote for you. But he is running a general election now. He is running against Hillary Clinton. Social issues are not how you win a general election, if you tap toward the right. There are a lot of people, not just conservatives who think it is good to have ideological balance on the Supreme Court, think it is a good thing to have a scaliaesque figure. These are justices that look like him and would preserve that ideological balance on the Supreme Court, theyre not justices that are going to come on and do something radical in the country. On the contrary, theyre text ulists, radicalists, that the words on the constitution mean something, not just open free for all interpretation. I hope when you say looked a lot like you didnt mean white man. Assume you didnt. I said ideological makeup. But lets be clear, the constitution is about protecting peoples rights. The constitution is about saying im just as good as you are, my family is just as good as your family, transgender people are as good as anybody else. If you talk about what the constitution is about, thats what it is about, not a group of men and women that seek to divide the country lets not argue the fundamental difference on how you want the Supreme Court to go. Thats an obvious argument. We are talking about why is trump putting out the list now. Pandering to conservative republicans, because somebody told him the way to the next step is pander to people you didnt get, whether you believe it or not, what your actual positions are. Hold up. Pander is one word, patrick. Politicians do this all the time to send a message. They didnt put out a list like this. This is really unusual. It goes to how much this guy presented himself as a powerful figure thats not going to take crap from anybody, not going to be told what to do. He is feeling a need to give this list which candidates historically would never do preemptively like this, but remember, he is in unity mode. This goes to two things. First of all, how hard it will be to unite all wings of the party. Weve not seen the beginning of that, but also what an unconventional candidate he is. Definitive list of what trump would want or just suggestions . Donald trump could change his mind tomorrow. We are asking the wrong questions about the Supreme Court justices. With a donald trump presidency, it is different. He is authoritarian. He will go off on the Washington Post owner, wants to change libel laws, ban muslims from entering the country, one of the allies said he said they should take away krns sec license. Will they stand up to a president who has dictatorial tendencies . Let me try one other thing. Maybe we have been looking at trump, saying he made this terrible error, whether on john mccain or other outrages statements, this maybe a real error. It enables the democrats to make the Supreme Court the issue in the election. What we know is if roe v wade and social issues that appeal to conservatives become the big issue in the election, the republicans and donald trump are in trouble. Im very surprised he did it. Carl makes the point i was going to make, unity is something the democrats will hear from the list. Not just democrats. You make independents, huge banner with these justices, what theyre for, some of the questions of unity will quickly disappear. Theres something about it being a list of conservatism, it is a list about restraining the three branches of government. This is a cryptic list. Name one justice you dont like. Do you believe kayleigh, do you believe he wants to con strain the executive . I would like people to name which justices you dont like, explain the decisions you dont like. Explain one. Im not about telegraphing what he is doing ahead of time, why did he come forward with i think it is possible to be too cynical about this. What this tells us is what the election is about. We are going to have one Supreme Court if Hillary Clinton wins, another Supreme Court if donald trump wins. This is a good lesson in that. It is good. Lets be clear about what the stakes are. In an interview with reuters, the republican presumptive nominee said he would have no problem speaking to north Korean Leader kim jongun to shut down the Nations Nuclear program. He said he would absolutely try to talk sense into the dictator. Remember when he said this in december . Donald j. Trump is calling for total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States. Reporter earlier this month seemed to walk that back on the radio. It is a temporary ban, hasnt been called for yet, nobody has done it, it is just a suggestion until we find out whats going on. He said he will end chinas currency manipulation. We cant continue to allow china to rape our country. And thats what theyre doing. It is the greatest theft in the history of the world. Reporter he also has an idea how to deal with north korea, or at least how japan and south korea, two of our strongest allies should do so. His highly criticized plan includes pulling all u. S. Troops out of the two countries and letting japan and south korea develop their own Nuclear Weapons to defend themselves. We are better off if japan protects itself against this maniac in north korea. We are better off if south korea is going to start to protect itself. Saudi arabia have a Nuclear Weapons . Before we went on air, i talked to former u. S. Congressman mike rogers who serves on the house intelligence committee. Chairman, meeting with Henry Kissinger, a right of passage for any republican candidate, but trump is not the average republican candidate. What do you think he is looking to gain from the meeting . Is it to build up his stature . I think this is a candidate thats trying to mature into his Foreign Policy positions and i think a bright first stop for him sends a clear message, Henry Kissinger, kind of the dean of the thoughtful, engaged republican Foreign Policy expert, dating all the way back to nixon and ford, and he has been active since then, writing some interesting books on china and other places. I think it was an important thing for that image and really i hope he pauses and listens a little. Trumps Foreign Policy seems isolationist or hawkish, as randi kaye pointed out, often full of contradictions. Yeah. Sometimes he talks about engagement. Clearly saying he wants to be more engaged with putin, thats clearly a diplomat i can engagement strategy. Other places says he is going to pull out. I think his team is a little light on Foreign Policy and National Security. I am hoping this is a step for him to say he wants to round that out. Ive never been a believer that you cant let a candidate mature on Foreign Policy and National Security because it is something thats normally foreign to everybody that walks in. If this is that step in that process, probably a good thing for him and his campaign. It is interesting, kissinger and clinton are seemingly close, she referred to him as a friend, said she relied on his counsel as secretary of state, something Bernie Sanders went after her for during debates. Could she and kissinger have more in common than kissinger and trump . Im not sure. I am sure shes matured in her positions are Foreign Policy from her time as secretary of state and in the u. S. Senate. I just dont think trump was there yet. I dont think he had thought through all of those issues. Thats why if this is, somebody in his campaign, maybe Chris Christie saying to round it out, mature our issues, grow a little bit on Foreign Policy, the great first stop to do that, i think it does send an important message, is Henry Kissinger because he is so well respected on both sides of the aisle on National Security and Foreign Policy credentials. What do you make of trump saying he would talk with north Korean Leader kim jongun. Is that any different than when candidate obama said he would talk to iran and probably not. This is a notion of some sense of engagement, is he isolationist or for engagement. This case, he is saying ill talk to the guy. I dont think he promised he would do anything different other than engagement. One thing you have to be very careful, you have a country pursuing Nuclear Weapons, this is saber rattling, you dont want to give away the best thing right away, dont want to shoot that arrow too soon. Thats why president s are normally cautious about saying im going to meet with kim jongun or talk to him. Thats about maturing. I think same instinct obama had, yeah, ill talk to anybody. When you get over there, Foreign Policy establishment will say if were going to do that, lets get something for it. Chairman rogers, thanks. He needs someone to shake up the ticket. Great hire, great pick. I understand, every Campaign Needs researchers and vetters, this is a mechanical position. You have a lot of staff that are there doing research, checking boxes, making sure candidates are thoroughly vetted. I wouldnt read too much into it other than the Trump Campaign is staffing up, they need to do, theyre running a national campaign. On Foreign Policy staff, criticism from republicans of the Obama Administration has been president obamas policies put our friends in unstable footing put our allies in unstable footing, drawn our enemies near. The idea we would begin to talk to kim jongun, chairman of the Korean Workers Party goes to every criticism republicans had of democrats, this administration. It is doing exactly that. Theres not a single u. S. President thats met with the leader of north korea, and theres a good reason for it. You need this administration in north korea to be good an act on its promises before you promise a one on one meeting with the president of the United States. They are continually in defiance of all things they promised insofar as the Nuclear Weapons program, so the idea, what it does more than anything is it goes to underline the fact that donald trump is enormously ill prepared to be leader of the free world, has very little understanding of what it means when he says he is going to i want to draw a triangle. You raised it in that interview with mike rogers, it is fascinating to see the connection between Henry Kissinger, donald trump, and Hillary Clinton. Youve got donald trump is ill prepared to be commander in chief, Henry Kissinger, falls into the category of reviling him, conducted a war that killed vietnamese and illegal war against cambodia, and Hillary Clinton that voted for iraq and created crisis and rise of isis in the middle east. If you draw that triangle, you have those three and Bernie Sanders, who has a completely different view of Foreign Policy and not only does not call Henry Kissinger his friend but has a completely different view of the world. I think making that triangle is unfair and incorrect. In what way . Part of the basis of the triangle is that donald trump is completely unprepared to be commander in chief and lead Foreign Policy leader in the world. You cannot say that about Hillary Clinton. She is someone with immense, probably the most qualified person as relates to Foreign Policy to ever run for the presidency of the United States. I want to keep this focused, not going down that road. From a political standpoint, to kayleighs point, everything donald trump is doing is what a candidate should be doing at this stage of the race. Perhaps so notable that donald trump has not done this previously. He has been able to succeed without the Traditional Campaign structure that all other candidates had. He succeeded ten months with five people riding shotgun on the plane from state to state to state. This is a large professionalization of the Campaign Going on, and it is serious. It sends a signal to a lot of those republicans last thing they heard was ben carson would be runnings the vp search. It is this half serious idea that of course ben carson wasnt running the search, donald trump will say things and throw them out. He is a serious figure. Hillary clinton is getting her own sort of professional vetters on the d. C. Side. I think we will see tightening up. Donald trump is throwing out names and numbers but now it is getting serious. It will be interesting to see how donald trump exists in a tighter sort of campaign structure. What i see is how donald trump in a way, i am 56 years in the business, since i am 16 years old. I have never seen a candidate seizure the attention of the nation of the people of the country, the world or media in the way donald trump has. Thats what this discussion is a reflection of. Eschhe is carrying the debate a controlling what we talk about. What i am concerned about, were going into two conventions, theres been no serious investigative reporting about Bernie Sanders, about Hillary Clinton, about donald trump on any of the television networks, barely any in the old mainstream press. Maybe we ought to be doing investigative documentariedocum looking at the records of these three people, where they are in the issues and in their lives, who they really are. You dont think people have been asking questions about Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders . Heres the point. I wrote a book about Hillary Clinton, absolutely. If we are to take whats in that book and if we are to take whats known about donald trump and if we are to take whats known about Bernie Sanders and create really good documentaries, put them on television. You believe voters have a lack of information about donald trump or Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders . I believe what we are doing so well is to have a granular discussion every night on all the cable channels, online, without a macro of investigation. Peter . I think look, one of the interesting topics would be to do donald trump on Foreign Policy. I think what he is doing is fascinating. Since george w. Bush, perhaps since ronald reagan, republicans have equated the size of the american empire with the welfare of ordinary americans. Thats the basic equation at the heart of conservative Foreign Policy. Donald trump ripped it up. He is saying i dont care, i dont think it benefits ordinary americans to be necessarily defending poland and estonia and south korea much thats revolutionary, it deserves a great deal of discussion. I agree, donald trump is miserably unprepared, but let him finish. But worth noting that conventional establishment Foreign Policy created a situation where ordinary americans are doing poorly as americas empire expanded, so it is not a crazy thought. One of the features, especially to people not supporting donald trump is his ability to say things that are not true or half true, not take a hit from supporters. Sometimes it seems to strengthen his support. We asked drew griffin to talk to Trump Supporters about that. He really loves this country if he is cutting so much taxes to try to get the poor a fighting chance out of poverty. We can either be weak or stronger, even if donald trump is not the first choice and he wasnt, you look at whats left and i think it is clear who the best choice left is. Our nation is teetering on the brink, and donald trump is manifestation of concern and in some cases fear of the American People that we need strong leadership. Leah and leo, there will be a lot of people looking at you two in particular, wondering how can you possibly vote and support donald trump, this man we heard will do nothing for the people of color in this country. Kind of got a hiphop swagger to him, i think people like that. Hes all about money and entrepreneurship, there are a lot of people before he was a candidate who were black american and famous and loved him. I think there are a lot of people in the closet who also love him. Job competition, job scarcity, he is addressing those issues. That will have black americans and all americans, important to people who feel left on the margins too long. Leo, that statement that you just said, that whole sh peel, sounded so president ial donald trump makes it sound like this, black people love me, hispanics love me, it is going to be great. He is a first time candidate, never been a candidate. He is not the issue. He is Getting Better as time goes on. I dont have to put ear muffs on him. I think all of the strategy. You think that twitter account is a strategy . He came out as relates to terrorism and europe, we should ban all muslims from coming into the United States temporarily. Do you believe that still . Saying yes or he said that to get attention. You cant say all muslims. We wouldnt want another country saying all christians. Lets talk about the wall. Clint . Are you for the wall . I am for the wall. Build the wall, deport 11 million people. Thats what he said. Right. As trump supporter, is he or is he not going to build a wall. Yes. Is he or is he not going to deport 11 million people. Yes, he is going to build a wall. Deporting the 11 million, i believe he is going to absolutely address that. Exactly what that looks like i cant tell you. I believe he is going to do that. Were not going to get 3,000 buses and run people across the border. Can i ask you why you believe that . I see what hes done as a businessman. We gave a vote for barack obama who promised all this hope and change stuff that couldnt manifest, it was trojan horse. Hype. They believed in that, why shouldnt they believe in trumps hope and change. He is not perfect. Cant judge him until he is president. Thats a big gamble. It always is in america. The president ial contest is a gamble. Let me try one more issue. I covered this last week, had to do with this publicity issue and his alter ego, john miller back in the day. He is calling the newspaper reporters. I want to show you a clip from a story i did. He really decided he wasnt. If that john miller sounds like trump, it is because audio forensic expert tomorrow owen says it is. Yes, it is my opinion it is donald trump. Didnt he just lie . I heard the tape from my to me it didnt sound like him. We asked specifically of the Trump Organization and asked of the Trump Campaign if these people do exist, if theres any record of them existing, let us know, well drop the whole story. Weve got nothing from them. I think theres bigger issues. I think politicians, lets face it, they lie on a regular basis. Im more concerned with who is qualified to run this country, to give us the job creation, give us the security we need. If thats the worst, ill take him over what weve had with the clintons and the barack Obama Administration any day of the week, it is a lie, he needs to correct it. Lets talk about Foreign Policy. I think he is the most qualified to fight terrorism. Why . He made it clear he will hunt down isis and destroy them, kill them all. Hillary clinton doesnt tell us has. He is not going to fight a politically correct war. He is not. He will put together a force and take them out. I want america to be great, i want to experience in it, i want a career, raise a family, children and grandchildren that thrive and grow and know. People said back in the reagan years, we want not just to be seen as america, we want to be seen as america, the greatest country on earth. I want to be proud again. Its time. Its time. Seems like they dont care if he lied, they say all politicians do that. Yeah. I mean, this was part of a 90 minute discussion on many different issues, anderson. What i came away with, details be damned, they love the guy, theyre emotionally invested in what they see as a true outsider with unconventional ways of speaking, acting, dealing with the media. They admit theyre taking a chance, it is fair to say this Group Believes the country has been led downhill by politicians on both sides of the aisle. They want a brand new face and style in the white house, and donald trump is that for them. Any issue they say they need answers on . Do they, for instance, want to see his tax records or is this beyond specific policy . I think it is beyond that. The tax records i did ask, it was a nonissue, he should release them, most dont care. Dont care if he is backtracking on the wall, backtracking on deporting all illegal immigrants, they dont care. It shows trump has won them over, period, and their enthusiasm both for trump and for the country they think trump will us into is impressive and powerful for a campaign.
