Thats number one. Number two, with respect to ukraine, i totally disagree. He did not say he was going to give over ukraine the way you intimate, van. He did not say van, what he said was is that he would actually look for a solution to end it quickly. He put 24 hours on it. What joe biden has done has been a disaster because initially with ukraine, joe biden wanted to give Vladimir Zelenskyy a ride out of dodge. It wasnt until people in moscow and ukraine here in the United States said this invasion is wrong and joe biden reversed course. Im trying to respond to everything coming up on the table. Lastly, we spent 22, 23 minutes talking about january 6th. We could have been talking about a whole lot of other issues. But let me are clear. What was said in this town hall about National Guard troops authorized by caitlyn was wrong. Im on the Oversight Committee. I was in two hearings on january 6th. It was testified in oversight that donald trump authorized National Guard troops on january 4, followed up in a call with then Acting A Second On january 5 trying to see where the deployment was on those troops. That is testimony in the Oversight Committee. Everybody testified at the Oversight Committee when nancy pelosi was Speaker Of The House, except the police because nancy pelosi would not allow it. Let me correct you. What caitlyn was saying was what the former Secretary Of Defense wrote in his book. Im telling you, what he testified to under oath in the Oversight Committee that are the facts. You do acknowledge donald trump lost the 2020 election, correct in. Let are we going to talk about the 2020 election again . Im a republican voter. The debt ceiling, foreign policy. I understand you dont feel that the last election and questions about the last election and the insurrection should be part of the discussion now, but since the president was there and propagating stories about a rigged election are and he repeated it again tonight, since he was rallied the crowd that stormed the capitol that he celebrated tonight, i want to ask you this one thing because i was interested when he was talking about his case that was dove sided yesterday by a jury. He said that was rigged, it was a clintonappointed judge. A lot of trump appointed judges threw out the allegations of election rigging. Should they be trusted or are they rigged, too . Every candidate that runs, youre allowed to contest an election. You have the ability to go to court and do that. Hes had the ability to do it. Right now he was making a statement very clearly about how he still feels about the 2020 elections but hes also looking forward prospectively. Caitlin didnt want to do that. She wanted to hang in and continue to talk about the 2020 election until she got the answer she wanted. Lets be very clear on that one. Listen, i want to say on caitlins behalf, she did a masterful job of Fact Checking a lie machine in realtime in front of millions of people. It is very, very difficult do what she did. Nobodys going to do it perfectly but it is incredibly difficult to talk to somebody who is going to say things sometimes theyre true, sometimes theyre not true. I dont think anybody here thinks as donald trump as a paragone of truth telling. While facing sexist attacks. Theres a plethora of republican candidates who want to do the things for our country i know you want to do and i want to do and david urban wants to do. But is there anything that would exclude him, even if he is someone who Republican Voters want back in office because of the things he did in terms of policy, could he go out and kill somebody . Is there anything that would be that you would consider Beyond The Pale or would you say everything is fine and say this is what people want so those pick were going to let alone sm. Polling will dictate they want to support donald trump by a wide margin and the abc poll was clear americans writ large want to support him over joe biden period. That poll was a little bit of an outlier but it not out of the realm of possibility that we will see others like this because we know voters do feel disappointed in joe biden. And it will be very interesting to see do voters who may have forgotten what it felt like to have donald trump in the spotlight, do they come away feeling excited and energized . Maybe some republicans will. I suspect a lot of independents will feel exhausted, i dont want this rerun. Youd say if you left he did a great job i didnt say he did a great job. He spoke to his base. Were on the middle of the field, were in a scrum trying to get the votes. The president if he wants to win, hes going to need to speak to those suburban pittsburgh voters. I think his calculation is if i get the nomination, i can beat biden, just as i think bidens calculation, if i get the nomination, i can beat trump. Things off of the top was that we heard former President Trump again say the election was rigged and talk about Ballot Stuffing. The lelection was not rigged. Here is trumps false claim on this tonight. A lot of people in this audience and maybe a couple that dont but most people understand what happened. That was a rigged election and its a shame we had to go through it. Can you publicly acknowledge you did lose the 2020 election. Let me just go on. If you look at truth of vote, they found millions of votes on Government Cameras where they were stuffing ballot boxes. So with all of that i think its a shame that what happened, i think its a very sad thing for our country. Now, there is just no basis for this claim. It is a lie. The House Speaker is not in charge of capitol security. At the time of the riot would have approved request for National Guard assistance. And here is acting former defense secretary chris miller he was never given an order by trump to have 10,000 troops ready to go to the Capitol On January 6th. There was no order from President Trump to put 10,000 troops to be on the ready for january 6th, correct . No. Thats correct. There was no order from the president. Lets talk about one of the politically more impactful decisions of his presidency to put three conservatives on the Supreme Court that would ultimately overturn roe v. Wade and what he had to say about it. Caitlin collin was trying to get him to say whether he would sign a National Abortion ban if reelected. He wouldnt take a position. Here is what he said about overturning roe v. Wade. I consider The Other Side to be radical because The Other Side under roe v. Wade and other things, The Other Side, theyre radical because they will remember the debate with Hillary Clinton, they said rip the baby out of the womb at the end of the ninth month. They will kill the baby in the ninth month. If you look at that crazy governor of virginia from the former governor, he said, no, the baby will be born and then well decide whether or not to execute the baby. Can we talk about what you would do if you are reelected. Obviously he would rather talk about positions that Hillary Clinton never took than his own position, which is not supported by polls, just to be clear the things he was saying about democrats were not true. Hillary clinton did not say anything about ripping the baby out of the womb. Lets just talk about the politics of this. Overturning roe v. Wade is unpopular with the American People and unpopular with the voters he needs to win the presidency should he get the nomination. He doesnt want to talk about this. I dont know that hes found a way to talk about it. That was pretty clear tonight. Understandably there is so much to unpack in this town hall. If he does get the nomination, which is still a big if, were very, very early in the process here, he will have to face a democratic president who has a white house and a campaign, who looks at the 2022 mid terms and believes that this is exhibit a, b and c of why, yes, the economy is troubled, that there are questions about joe biden but they still believe that the Abortion Issue will drive voters out to the polls to vote for joe biden and to vote against donald trump. You take all the other issues, maybe even all the other noise and you put them aside, that is still front and center in voters minds and that answer, as you said, clearly if you are the Trump Campaign needs some refining. I dont know they can refine it before the end of the primary season. Perhaps he will do it if he gets the general. Not even refining he said i did that, i did that. And that is not what michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania swing voters want. It seemed to me that the goal tonight for trump was to reinforce to conservative voters that he supports the overturning of roe v. Wade. He did that to a point to actually produce quite a number of General Election ads if he makes it to the General Election. I think thats what they were trying to do. Part of the context here is in the weeks leading up to this, trump was saying to his aides privately that people like ron desantis had perhaps gone too far with the sixweek abortion ban. When you saw caitlin pushing him on the dates, would he sign a federal abortion ban, what weeks would he support for an abortion ban, he refused to answer those questions about the specifics. They wanted to double down on i support overturning roe v. Wade without getting him tied down on anything concrete that is, by the way, happening right now in the states. These are not hypothetical situations and trump would not give the public a clear answer about where im sure they viewed that as a victory. The phrase that he kept using was, the decision, he calls it a great victory. He claimed, of course, that he had taken credit for it. Although it was the Supreme Court that actually ruled. Not the president of the United States. He certainly did. But the issue he was saying was it gave prolifers something to negotiate with. Why that is so disingenuous, there were already trigger laws on the books that were created to be reinstated or implement new abortionrelated bans should roe v. Wade ever be overturned. Number two, of course, the negotiation he presumes does not happen because you have mifepristone. You have legislatures where there has been complaint thats theres no room to negotiate on these very principles. So this perception that the dobbs decision, by returning to the states somehow affords a greater opportunity to negotiate is one not what the Supreme Court was thinking well, they may have thought about it, but not necessarily happening on the ground. One other thing i want to talk about is his defense of the people storming the capitol. Four Trump Supporters died that day, including one that was shot by a Police Officer who was protecting House Speaker nancy pelosi. He did his job. They were bursting in. Heres what he had to say about the woman who was led to the capitol by Donald Trumps lies. Over 140 officers were injured that day. A person named Ashley Babbitt was killed and she shouldnt have been killed. That thug who killed her, there was no reason to shoot her at blank range. Cold blank range, they shot her and she was a good person. She was a patriot. There was no reason. There was no reason. And he went on television to brag about the fact that he killed her. Okay. I mean, again, factcheck. He did not go on television to brag. He was completely cleared in the incident. He was protecting the House Speaker. Donald trump, his lies and the lies of his minions violently burst into the capitol. Here he is taking the side of the mob. Because he believes with his voters, he has convinced them to believe this and now he will stick with it. If any of you out there thought, maybe he will pivot. He will change. He is not going to change. He is who he is. He wants to minimize this day. You hear them saying, why do you keep asking about january 6th . We have to keep asking. If he will be the republican nominee, the formidable front runner for the nomination, they tried to steal the country. They tried to steal the country. They tried to undermine the foundation of everything. The former president got a pretty warm welcome from the voters in that hall. Did he say anything that you think will help him get the nomination . No, no. No one should be surprised by what we heard. He had a chance to move on from 2020. He didnt do it. He had a chance to own january 6th. He didnt do it. He had a chance, he didnt do it. If youre a suburban mom, i dont see any of them being convinced by anything. It was the same old regurgitation. Theres no energy, no positivity, there was nothing exciting. He looked weak, he looked tired. He looked on the defensive. Angry and bitter. And i think we can agree, manager is trying to have moo on from angry and bitter. He didnt make a case. He kept reiterating his same old arguments. Do you think there are any republicans who know how to run against him or stand on the stage and debate him if he was willing to do that . Do you think you know how to run against him . Sure. When folks get up and try to debate donald trump on policy, youre missing the point. You have to debate donald trump on him. On his character. On the flaws that he brings to the table, on his weakness, that he is a loser. And as a republican, a fourtime winning republican, im tired of losing. We should have won in 2020. We got our clock cleaned because of his leadership and list message isnt getting it done. I supported him in 2016. I supported him in 2020. Hes a threetime loser going on to be a fourtime loser and its not just him that im worried about. You worry about the senate races, the governorship, the ballot that he affects up and down the ticket. I want winners. I want independents back on the team. If you look at the polls, this man is who they want as of now. Hes far ahead of everybody else. We havent had a debate yet. Not even a single debate. The field is yet to be defined. Do you think the debates really matter that much . Oh my god, yeah. Absolutely. I think in those debates, people will see that hes not the same guy. This isnt 2016. He doesnt bring the same fire. Theres no new ideas. He will try to relitigate what happened in 2020. We all know exactly what happened there. And he will be on the defensive. He wont have the energy. I think theres a huge opportunity for the new generation, the new voice of the Republican Party. New ideas to come to fruition. Theres a lot to i pla before we get to the first primary in New Hampshire which is next january, right . So i understand the polls. When someone polls and says, do you support donald trump . They think about whats going on in working in the d. A. They think about, hes playing that victim card very well. I mean, lets think about the irony of that. That donald trump is playing a victim here. But they do think there is a political vendetta if you will against him. Does that translate into a vote nine months from now . Totally different story. Absolutely totally different story which is why i still very firmly believe he will not be the nominee. There will be a lot of possibility for republicans to shine. You heard him attack the New York Civil Trial which he was found guilty of sexual abuse. I want to play a clip of that for our viewers. I said if youre famous and rich, whatever i said. I said if youre a star, you are, i said women let you. I didnt say you grab them. Women let. You didnt use that word. If you look, women let you. They said, will you take that back . I said, look. For a million years, there is the way its been. By the way, he said they let you do it. You can do anything including grabbing them by the you know what he said. Do you think theres anything that would lose him support with republicans or republicanleaning independents . Well, hes not gaining any support. I dont think anything he said shocked people. Weve kind of crossed that paradigm a long time ago. Hes trying to play the he said, she said thing. Hes trying to twist everything around and not address it head on. Its defensive. Its weak. Theres no one that said, i think ill change my mind. I think im with him now. No. No one is back on the team, so to say. There was just nothing new. The outrageous lies, the outrageous aspects of himself. It is from a weaker, more defensive position than hes ever been in before. Thats not what america is looking for. Given new options, i think the Republican Party will take advantage. Do you think the former president s criminal investigations in the past. No, not really. Well have criminal investigations in the future. It will be news and headlines. Theres a lot of validity to it. But in terms of moving a voter, there is nothing he can do or being indicted on that is overly outrageous that he doesnt already have. The problem is hes not winning new voters back. Thats what you have to do to win. Hes doing nothing to win suburban moms. Nothing to win the independents. Hes doing nothing to go after that very thin margin of independents that got on his team in 2016 to give him the win. Backed way off in 2018, 2020, 2022. It cost us all elections across the board as a Republican Party. None of them are coming back. None of them are saying gee, i guess im back on. My fear isnt for the presidency. It is all the way down the ticket. Im paubl. We should have 54 u. S. Senate races. His message and the candidates got their butts kicked in 2022. Im tired of losing. Aware all tired of losing. I think resign is excited for it. Hes getting his moment now but he hasnt really been challenged. I think kaitlan did a fantastic job, by the way. She was steadfast and held her own. He kept reiterating the lies. Almost trying to run out the clock, if you will. You talk about bringing something to the table. I wont ask you if youre going to, but can you say when you might bring yourself to the table in this race . I think all the potential candidates have to decide by mid to late june. It is really hard to go beyond that, given the logistics of ballot access, the access of what you need to get on the debate stage. We now find out President Trump is wimping out. He doesnt want to get on the debate stage and talk about issues. Why didnt you drain the swamp like you said you were going to . Why didnt you fix herring like you promised . Why didnt you build the wall like you said you were going to . He doesnt want to face his peers, a governor who understands issues, how systems work, how to get thing done regardless of the hand youre dealt. His thing is blame, right . Hell keep blaming everybody else. In politics you cant blame other people. When youre blaming someone else, youre highlighting that they beat you. Right . Whether it is republicans or democrats. If hes blaming republicans for not getting his agenda done, that means they won the argument, the negotiation. This great negotiator that he tries to pretend to be, he didnt get enough done. We talked about the Abortion Issue which is immense consequence in the United States. An issue to people all over the world has to do with our position on ukraine. And donald trump, he loves to brag about his Good Relationship with Vladimir Putin of russia. The questions have been asked about what donald trump would do if he were to be elected president again in terms of the war support in ukraine. Do you want ukraine or russia to win this war . I want everybody to stop dying. Theyre dying. Russians and ukrainians. I want them to that to dying and ill have that done in 24 hours. Ill have it done. You need the power of the presidency to do it. You wont say that you want ukraine to win . Ill say this. I want europe to put up more money. So a moral equivalence made between an invading country, russia, and a victimized country, ukraine. And we dont have an answer. No answer. Hes always been friendly to putin. Just a few weeks ago in an interview, he said that putin was savvy and genius for his moves in ukraine. I think it is worth noting in the context of what i would call trump escalation. With his first house impeachment, it was over abuse of power and Withholding Aid from ukraine, right . Now hes saying all these years later, the war will end when i show up on the first day. How . Does that mean Withholding Aid . What does that mean . With every one of his answers, you have to ask yourself, what is the logical conclusion, what is the next step to the thing hes talking about . You can do that with abortion. What does it mean to negotiate further . What does it mean to pardon the people on january 6th . A large majority of people on january 6th . What will it mean to praise Ashley Babbitt or those on the extreme right consider a martyr instead of somebody who charged the capitol and lost their life as a result . This is the beginning of a conversation, right . He is asking people for another four years so he can continue more of these policies. And jamie, one of the other things he said, the hague has charged Vladimir Putin with war crimes having to do with essentially their kidnapping of hundreds if not thousands of ukrainian children and taking them to russia. Hes been charged with war crimes. It was evidencebased. It wasnt just some sweeping indictment. It was one specific thing. Kaitlan asked donald trump about that, too. Do you believe putin is a war criminal . Hes responsible for the deaths of thousands i think it is something that should not be discussed now. It should be discussed later. Right now we have to go to war. If you say hes a war criminal, it will be a lot tougher to get this stopped. People will go grab him and execute him. Hes going to fight a lot harder than hes fighting under the other circumstance. Thats something to be discussed at a later date. Right now we want to get that more settled. Im not talking about the money, either. Im talking about all the lives. The number of being killed in that war is far greater. When they blow up a city and those buildings come pouring down and they say two people were injured. No, no, hundreds of thousands of people are being killed. And we have to get that war settled. Amazing. He refuses to call Putin A War Criminal and then details a hideous war crime while refusing to say it is the russians that are the ones shelling these civilian apartment complex. Lets remember that most americans support u. S. Support of ukraine. I think that was a classic donald trump. We shouldnt discuss it now. He doesnt want to discuss it now. Because he does not have a solution and b, he doesnt want to say anything negative about putin. In a certain way, it was not unlike his abortion answer, chfrs something to the effect of, i want to negotiate to make everyone happy. Right. Like the Trump Campaign put out a statement saying, Krdonal Trump reversed the biden transition. I cant think of a whole lot he laid out. Drill baby drill. That was it. Drill baby drill. He said that he would finish the wall. He already finished the wall. He would put into place child separation. Really on the issues at hand right now. On ukraine, on abortion. He refused to give details. And i think that was very telling about how theyre trying to position themselves in this moment. Hes a former president of the United States. Hes already been in the office. So you would assume that he has some pretty clear ideas of what he wants to do. What his policy is on all of these issues. He refused to lay it out. He dodged a lot of questions tonight. Wasnt just because he likes to talk circles. They were trying to avoid him being pinned down on things that they want to be flexible on. I have to say it will be very difficult for him to be flexible on some of this stuff. Once he gets into a Real Campaign environment in which he is up against even other republicans who have different views. Can i just disagree . I think that he is never going to say and answer these questions. I think what we saw tonight is classic donald trump. Despite that you have the Chris Christies of the world who say, if he gets in, he will try to do this and others as well. Where you started this conversation about ukraine, i think it is very telling that so far, aside from governor sununu, the official responses on twitter from Chris Christie, as i mentioned earlier, and also from Asa Hutchinson have been totally zeroed in on the issue of ukraine. Whether that is because it is a very safe place, a clear delineation with him on a traditionally republican conservative issue, to be more hawkish, to stand up to autocrats, to stand up to people like Vladimir Putin because theyre reagan republicans. But the question is, are they making the right bet . If you go back to 2016, it was absolutely not. They may not be making the right bet. The former President Signaling that the next election could be like the last. Yeah. I think it is important to understand, what she was asserting that he was refusing to say that he would concede if he lost. He kept saying if i believe it is an honest election. Just to be clear, donald trump before he beat Hillary Clinton said wasnt going to be an honest election. Suddenly he won and it was. When he lost to ted cruz in iowa, he said that it was stolen. Which wasnt. Ted cruz beat him in iowa fair and square. And then in 2020, it happened. She was right. He is not committing to accepting a defeat if he does run and lose. No. Kaitlan was right. She was right in the line of questioning and in her interpretation of what he said. He was not saying that he would concede if he lost. He was suggesting that all of this, just as did he to your point in an election he won. He called an election he won rigged. He is treating this as a negotiating prospect. That translates to, he will not say if he will concede, which is very significant after we watched what happened post 2020 and on january 6th, 2021. Yeah. Troubling. Just a reminder, even though he Beatological Hillary in the electoral vote but he lost in the popular vote by more than 3 million votes. Then he set up an Election Commission in the white house to prove that those 3 million popular votes that he lost to Hillary Clinton by were fraudulent. And of course, they were not able to do so because they werent fraudulent. Right. The commission He Ironically made mike pence be in charge of and nobody at the white house wanted it because they did not believe it would yield anything. What did you make of his overall performance this evening . I think there are a couple of Different Things that can be true at once. For donald trump in a republican primary, and that was that crowd in that town hall tonight. This was not a bad night for him in terms of appealing to them. I thought it was incredibly striking that when he said he was inclined to pardon many of the january 6th rioters who were arrested that day for the attack on the capitol, there was loud applause from that audience. So i thought that was pretty revealing and frankly is important for people to understand where the republican primary electorate is. I think trump got a lot of what he wanted to get out of tonight. I think he was hoping to show he could go into any room and i think he was going to try to dominate. Kaitlan really pushed him on this. She knows this case. His possession of classified material at maralago. He gave a lot of answers that i think will be very interesting to the Special Counsel investigating it. Yeah. Another moment that was interesting in the sense that it was completely horrific to watch was when he was asked about the jury finding him guilty of sexually assaulting e. Jean carroll. A jury of his peers found that to be the case and he made a Comedy Routine out of it. Not that i found it funny but people in that audience found it funny. Which again gets to my point. The way he is interpreted, and i have talked about this for a while. To some people it is a psychological thriller. To others its a laugh track. Tom audience, it was a laugh track. He was taking detailed pieces of evidence that he says were not introduced properly in the e. Jean carroll. It was his own lawyers representing him. He was turning this into a joke. And the crowd was eating it up. I will say again, i think that for a republican primary electorate, this helps him. Its not clear how many of these clips are particularly helpful if he is the nominee in the General Election and i think democrats believe that. Yeah. He was pushed also on the issue of abortion. He declared as you and i have discussed, not without reason, that he is the reason roe v. Wade is no longer the law of the land. He appointed three litmus tested Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn it. Earlier you said you thought he would probably respond to a question of abortion that might appease social conservatives. Do you think he accomplished that . I do. I think he would not commit to a federal abortion ban. And there will be some social conservatives who dont find that acceptable but others will talk about his pride in ending roe v. Wade and say thats enough for them. That they trust he will do the right thing in their minds, what they consider right, when he becomes president. Again another answer that i dont think is particularly helpful. But for the primary electorate, it will give enough of a fig leaf for some voters to stay with him. I dont know about swing voters in wisconsin, pennsylvania and michigan. Thats right. Thats right. Thanks so much. I appreciate it. Back with our political commentators here in new york. Does this change anything . Its interesting. The outrage many people have of hearing from the former president. Its interpreted differently based on what side of the political aisle youre on. There are those who thought he did great. And all those people are angry, maybe part of it is the realization that this is what the next two years are going to be like. And perhaps the next six years. No doubt about it. Were a deeply divided country and donald trump is one of the reasons were a divided country. And thats central to his politics. But as maggie was saying, as i said earlier, i think he went in that room. He didnt govern as the president of the United States. He governed as the head of his base and i think he went into that room and spoke to his base. One thing that interests me on this point of him saying, if i think the election was fair, which is what he has said in the past, i will accept the results. What about the primary . What if hes not the nominee of the Republican Party . I think the other calculations that democrats are making, donald trump cant lose. Constitutionally, hes unable to lose. So will he wake up one morning when the delegates are counted and say now it is time to fall in and march behind my friend ron desantis . I cant even imagine that scene. And thats another problem for the Republican Party. Are you concerned about that as a republican . No. I think donald trump will be our nominee. I think it is important to say. Even if you listen to the last segment with jake. Everything that was just talked about is not on the minds of independent voters in manager. They are focused on the things affecting their families. First and foremost. Has my child actually caught up from being locked out of schools for two years . Is fentanyl, which is a major issue in so many communities around our country, is the president going to do the job of securing our border and stopping the drug cartels from having operational control of our southern border . Are we going to maintain the dollar as the World Reserve currency while china is trying to negotiate around the United States . Inflation, yes, the year over year number is trending down. But the impact of inflation on the American Family has completely devalued their wages over the last two years. Those are the things that really matter to americans. So they look why was President Trump, did he spend so much time, not in this forum but when he goes out and makes speeches. Actually, he does. This is the key thing. Ill let you go, too. He does. If you have a country that feels like the wheels are coming off and they voted for joe biden to put the wheels back on and they dont feel like thats happened, even though what we just watched feels chotic and insane, its not just the Republican Base that finds something appealing. In. Thats what i said in the break, we were talking about this. What biden says and i agree wholeheartedly. Biden says dont judge me against the almighty but the alternative. Trump voters are saying, look, im not talking about 2020. Im looking at whats going on now. What is the alternative to not having donald trump . Crime in the streets. I think this may have motivated some of the folks who want to challenge him say okay, this is an opening. He didnt play to the vote,like me who are sick. Noise, the antidemocratic positions. This to me became a an opening for a republican to take him on and say, if you want a lot of the policies, insane things like Family Semirags and you dont want that. Im trying to look at, what do democrats have to be worried about . I think we all had a visceral reaction to the insanity that we saw. Just the offense that he was giving to people who believe in reality. But there is a trick that im seeing that hes doing. He weaponizes nostalgia. His original make America Great again was weaponizing no, sir at a gentleman from the 1950s or something. Hes doing it again. Nostalgia from the trump presidency. Hes telling a story about the trump presidency, how great it was, inflation and all that. And then hes projecting his future tense. Were in danger, if you love joe biden the way i do, that he owns the past and the future and biden is stuck with the present. And we are going to have to have a compelling narrative coming out of this. A compelling narrative about the future we want that can stand up to this weaponizing. There again, much of what was seen and heard tonight is in the eye of the voter and can be judged differently from voter to voter. We want to get reaction from some of the undeclared voters. That were not proven with evidence. We are evidencebased and there was no evidence to show that. So when we and when kaitlan started at the town hall, a very fundamental democratic ideal. Hes facing voters. The first thing you need to do within the confines of democracy is to ask the person who wants the job again as president if they feel comfortable with the basics of democracy, like free and fair election. And he hasnt been asked a question in this way, in this kind of forum for a very long time because hes only talked to people who are for the most part, not entirely, for the most part, people who feed the lies back to him. And we have people who feel so disappointed and i think the former president has done such a good job of undermining investigative branches, judicial branch, and now hes saying, guess what . Governor hutchinson, what was your reaction to what we heard from donald trump . Well, donald trump was certainly grilled tonight and what was clear is that he had a weak performance and he is locked in the past. He had a goal, i am sure, to expand his base and be able to prove that he can track independents and suburban voters. He failed that test. He narrowed his base of support. He left in the past, did not address the issues of the future. Whenever he was asked about the economy, he gave one brief response on Energy Policy but really did not address the broad range of things that we have in our economy to get it going again, so i think it was a poor performance, a weak performance and, again he was locked in the past. He repeateds lies over and over about the 2020 election was rigged, this has always been adjudicated on Election Boards and courtrooms. He did not indicate any regret for january six, including his Vice President s life being there and. He said he was inclined to pardon most of the riders from that day. I guess, the question i have is, do you think that this is going to hurt him with the Republican Base . Youre out there and talking to Republican Voters, i am sure when you say that they want to hear about the economy, they are right and, yeah, he is still so far ahead of the poll. He made a mistake by not pivoting from that question and moving on to the future, and so he got locked into the debate about 2020 election and then it was all rigged with his false dialogue on that, and that he spent time on january six and those were very appropriate questions. The debate should have moved way beyond that much quicker because, as i talk to people, they might believe the last election was rigged, but they are ready to talk about the future as well, so its not foreclosing winning those votes, even though we might have a fundamental disagreement on what happened in 2020 in the election. Thats an important factor to remember. These voters still care about who can lead our country, whos got the right position on supporting ukraine . Who can actually solve the problems along our southern border . And so, that was clearly a mistake by not moving more quickly to the. Whenever you look at ukraine, and thats something that bothered me a great deal because he basically talks about himself being a great negotiator. Well, he set the stage by saying, we can end this in one day, if i am president. That gives away every Negotiating Leverage that he has because he tells putin that you are going to win, youve got the leverage, as we go into the negotiation. Its a terrible mistake, a terrible position, not supporting ukraine, not trying to win for ukraine indefinitely against russia. One of the most striking moments was when he mocked e. Jean carroll who just was victorious in court in her suit against him. He was found liable for sexually assaulting her and defaming her. He went into this whole Comedy Routine, if you can call it the, calling her names, prompting left from the audience. I think his lawyers might be Breathing A Sigh of relief that he did not really say anything new to cause any new legal problems. He certainly seemed to embrace the idea that those people who attacked the capitol, his followers, essentially follow everything he says. He has a very strong hold on them, and that is something that certainly prosecutors have noticed in the recent trial of a group of proud boys leaders in washington. They played that video, what a devideos of his comments after charlottesville, when he said to members of the proud boys to stand back and stand by. That is something to prosecutors race simply because it showed, at least as they told a jury, that the former president as a stronghold on these people, and that they were essentially acting as footsoldiers that day. The idea that the former Vice President and the danger that those people or facing that day is something that he can just wash away by issuing pardons, something that is shocking, frankly. Its not shocking because the former president also said that he didnt take his Vice President mike pence was in danger on january six, and he again claimed that the Vice President did something wrong but not sending votes back to the State Legislatures. Talk about how those comments were in line with the reality . No, they dont. The fact is that the legal scholars, people on the right, people conservative, legal thinkers, all agreed that the Vice President does not have the power, and thats the reason why the Vice President decided to stick with the Election Results that everyone, including the former president s own legal team at the time, inside the Justice Department, inside the white house, had all concluded that there was not enough fraud to marry any more challenges. One at the things that the former president is still sticking by is the idea that if the former Vice President had only sent these Election Results back, that perhaps things would have been different. The advisers believe that they honed into some of the things that trump sent about abortion, and refusing to say whether he would accept the default of the upcoming election. They think they can use that in their argument going forward. One area where democratic officials are really keen on focusing on is the former president s comments when it came to him saying that he was proud of the decision to overturn roe v. Wade. One democratic officials said that was the clip of the night and called a, quote, home run for us, support democrats have been seeking to argue that trump and republicans would really put womens reproductive rights under attack. That is the message that you saw carried out during the midterm campaign, something that biden is continuing the press heading into this General Election. Ultimately, a source familiar with the campaign believed that Trump Messaging and some of his efforts to double down on extreme issues, especially when it comes to election denialism, that that is something that will alienate voters heading into 2024. Thats right, trump also claimed that he was negotiating to return these documents and then, surprise, the fbis shows up to search maralago. Lets hear Donald Trumps misleading version of events. I was negotiating, and we were talking to narrow, that is washington, to bring whatever they want. They can have whatever they want. When we left washington, we had the boxes lined up at the sidewalk outside for people taking pictures of. Everybody knew you were taking those boxes, and the gsa, government service, they were the ones taken to. They brought them down to maralago. We were negotiating with naira, all of a sudden, they raid our house. So first of all, the president ial records act says when the president leaves office, the National Archives gets custody and control of all the president ial records from his administration, classified or not. Theres nothing about a negotiation between the former president and the archives about returning them. And trumps case, it took the archives months to get 15 boxes back from him. Obviously, trump was found liable is the day in court, and so i think its very important to look back in 2016 because there were a lot of allegations made back then the trumpet made unwanted sexual advances towards women. What we saw was that the clear majority of voters believe those allegations. 54 , just 41 said they were mostly false and yet despite the fact that 54 of americans or voters believe that those allegations were mostly true, donald trump still won the election. So even if voters believe that verdict yesterday, believed that trump was liable, as the court found, that may not hurt him in the polls based upon what we see in previous elections. What about when you look at Republican Voters in 2016 . Yeah, i think this is an interesting costello. You might say, oh, those allegations really did not make a difference, even if people believe them, they were still willing to vote for donald trump. Take a look among republicans, the trump make unwanted sexual advances . Among Republican Voters before the 2016 election, if youre a republican, you believe that no he did not. Trump won those Republican Voters by 92 points. If youre a republican and plead his allegations, trump won those gop voters, yes but only by 20 points. So the fact is, as we look forward to the General Election, no, i dont think this will make a big impact in the primary season, what was found as a day into court, but if, in fact, slightly more republicans have a more negative view of donald trump or more likely to believe that he made unwanted sexual advances, i think it could cost trump in the polls. Obviously, well have to wait and see. The fact is, this is something that we have not really encountered in american political history so, i am not sure how useful the polls necessarily are. Joining the panel now is cnn senior legal analyst and former prosecutor elie honig as well as scott jennings. Elie, just from the legal standpoint, was there anything that the president said tonight that investigators are going to be listening to closely . Absolutely, so everything donald trump said tonight, everything that he had said and will say publicly is fair game for prosecutors. I assure you, they were watching and taking notes. Ill tell you two specific moments that jumped up to me as potentially usable evidence, but prosecutors. First of all, in or listen to january six, there was a moment when kaitlyn asked him about his followers, she said, dateline to you and you know. Trump admitted that, he said, that is right. If youre a prosecutor thinking, there you go, that is the cleanest, clear submission by trump that he understands that his words have an impact on the actions of his followers. That, to me, is the best piece of evidence that we have seen so far on the. Then shifting to maralago, there was a point and trump had said things like this before, where he said essentially that i took everything that i had the right to take. One of the things that you have to establish as a prosecutor in that case is knowledge and intent. Right there, he admits that i knew we werent taking anything, and he argues wrongly that he had the right to take it. Right there, you say, none of this was a mistake or known to him. I think those are two useful pieces of evidence that prosecutors are taking no. Of scott, we have not heard from you tonight. Just political analysis for me, if i am the trump team, i am happy about how this whole thing went. I think theyre trying to set up two wins tonight. The first was to try to cement his lead in the republican primary by speaking the language of he invented. He invented this language in 2016. There are a lot of imitators, but there is only one master. He still got it. Regardless of what you think of it, regardless of how you believe he prefers since the facts or lack thereof, he speaks to republican primary voters and a supporters in a way that no one else can, so that was number one. Number two, he once the General Election to be fought on the following grounds, the current president s is feeble and unfit for office, and i am still throwing fastballs. I think his team is looking at that saying, that there is no conceivable way that joe biden can sit through that kind of questioning on this network or any other and will not. That is evidence by the fact that he wont hold press conferences. On two critical issues, we could that fighting spirit and showing republicans what they want to hear, you heard the crowd, and setting up a contest against a feeble biden, its two wins for them. They have to be thrilled with this. I would add that there was a message relative to rhonda scent this, whose name is not mentioned here, but it was basically been cloistered in tallahassee doing remotes with fox news and playing home games, essentially. There was a contrast there. I want to say one thing. I think that as happy as the trump people would be and i said earlier that for their purposes, this was a good night, i think the biden folks should be happy as well. Because they want donald trump to be the nominee of the Republican Party. They believe that donald trump is a very vulnerable nominee at the Republican Party. Much of what he said tonight spoke to why they think he is a vulnerable nominee of the Republican Party. As was mentioned earlier, he created a lot of new video for their advertising when it comes to the General Election. In this weird way, i think they both walk away from tonight saying that this was a good night for us. Nearly 70 of voters did not want a trump versus biden rematch. I am a republican voter that does not want to see biden reelected, and i dont want to see trump reelected. I think there is a significant swath of voters who watch this that know that biden will obviously be the democrat nominee. This is very likely, as harry pointed, donald trump will be the republican nominee. There is basically no option for a large swath of the country that want something us. Now, i think most of the kind of floated ideas or different thirdparty lanes are, frankly, spoilers for the candidates in the game, but i think that there is very much a land for somebody to get in. I tend to agree with the congressman that donald trump will run away with the nomination but i would note that in 2015 this time, jay pushes to the front runner. There is some time. There are indictments that may come down, the Fulton County investigation, the doj investigation. Things could change, and there are gettable Republican Voters will never support trump and never support biden. If you think at the lunch video for joe biden, it was targeted at a donald trump running. It does not play the same way if it is a governor sununu or desantis. It is extremism, storming the capitol, anti democracy, fearmongering, white supremacy. That is targeted at that on trump. They will have a message if they run the same name of a stray republican who is not in the lane that that trump himself in. I think its a happy face. I dont think he said anything tonight that he has not already set. He was vintage donald trump tonight. Everything was authentic to him based on his 16 and 20 campaign, based on his presidency. I dont think anything happened tonight that was unexpected. So for Republican Voters, that is sterling, and i know the democrats say that they want him, but theyre not acknowledging their own weakness here, which is that trump can do what he does, and we know its good for about 45 of the vote. I am not sure what percentage of the vote there but it is good for right now because, half of his own party dont want to him to run again. I would say more than half of bidens own party dont want him to run. Second thing, we talk a bit about the material per se. I would say that the trump camp had been looking at the last two and a half years and they say that they have all the better they need on joe biden. But by the end of the day, you get through and want to talk about january six and all the other stuff, it always comes back to the core issues that are facing people in their ordinary lives. Thats what theyre focused on. As we lay up to what appears to be the inevitable, people will have a different question in 24 than they had in 20. And the question in 24 is, okay, both of these guys have now had this job, who did the job better . If you want to talk about incomes, if you want to talk about Border Security, foreign policy, long down the list, people mostly in this country will see the damage up to the better job. I am just saying, look, the question that is unanswered, and we will find out, how many how many indictments, potential convictions, how many scandals, how many problems can this or does the Republican Base at least decide that this is all part of a political persecution, and does it actually strengthen him as the first indictment it . He mentioned that through Border Patrol sectors along the southern border are encountering more than 2000 migrants. That was the rio grande valley, el paso where i am and tucson. The other thing that stood out to me, anderson, because as you know, once title 42 lives, immigration agents will be applying title a. His pointed out was, the example he used was that yesterday, there were more than 10,000 encounters put that only 17 of those, title 42 was applied. So for the vast majority, more than 80 , title eight was already being applied.
