Laura coats, and this is cnn tonight. Weve got two huge stories tonight that were following, of course right here in the nations capital, our continuing coverage of the state of the Union Address. Meanwhile, another sided country in los angeles, we have breaking news on another major story, in the world of sports. Entertainment, and frankly american culture. Lebron james tonight breaking the record to become the nbas alltime leading scorer. Passing a fellow laker, Kareem Abduljabbar. Once he broke this record the game was actually stopped for the celebration that was certainly do lebron joined on his court by his family, by the man he also passed, Kareem Abduljabbar. And even the nba commissioner, adam silver. In other words, everyone was watching to see whether tonight would be the night that he actually did it. I came into the game, and watch what happened in this really important, powerful moment. Lebron, for the record, hes got it. Hes done it. Lebron james is now the alltime leading scorer, in the history of the nba. The king wins the crown. So his son brawny, of, Course Election in the making in his own right. And everyone taken to the court and seeing the emotion pouring out of them. I mean really he has done it, he came in scoring 36 points at least, mind you, what the record was actually set by Kareem Abduljabbar, in 1984. Eight months before that man, lebron james was even born. Joining me, now cnn correspondent omar jimenez is in los angeles, along with cnn contributor bob costas as well im excited to talk to you both i want to go to you first omar, on this. Because you are really in the room where it happened, so to speak. We witnessed that he finally did it. He was finally there, what was the mood in the stadium to see that happen . Well, there is a big question i think going into, this was lebron actually gonna go for tonight, or is you gonna take us time so to speak, and try to do it on thursday. It is very clear in the first few possessions, that he was gonna do it tonight. It might have been clear before that, hand when he walked into the arena in an allblack shiny suit, ready to, go all about business. And when we got to just point a few points left. Every basket seemed to bring a bigger cheer for this crowd, and of course when your two points away, from him breaking kareems record. Every cell phone you can think of was out, when the moment happens, he ran into the center court, Arms Up In The Air in triumph, he was emotional. Fans couldnt believe that they were here to witness this true moment in history. And of course, family, friends, celebrities. Jayz over here as well, kareem was speaking to many people here in the crowd, just as the game finished up as well so many people were waiting to see that moment. They got that moment, and it is one that lebron had said previously, leading up to this, it wasnt something that he thought about when he began playing basketball, when he began playing professionally. But it is a record no one thought could be broken, ended up being him. And we look at what hes done over the course of his career, who else wouldve been . I, mean i was actually at the game when he passed karl malone, and even that was a moment. A student few food firsttime, it was crying just to see a legend at that time. Now just to know, that we witnessed a path to history. Also in the, audience his own son, Fastball Stars in their own right. At least bronny, whos the older. Them talk to me about what it was like to see the family, to see his loved ones coming in and celebrating this moment as well. Indian l. A. Of all places. Yeah, theres a moment after he put his arms up in triumph, he returned to center court, was greeted by his family. They embraced as the crowd chanted mvp, over and over again. Lebron started to get emotional, and who wouldnt be in that moment . Hes obviously someone very involved in his kids lives. As much as you can, be at the level that he is that at this point. After the game was over, just here at center court, he embraced with his family for a picture, all of them could not be more proud, there are messages played by his wife, savannah, and this is children, including bronny james, which is on his own basketball path, congratulating their dad. Theres one thing that heard talking to the folks over at Lebron Jamess family foundation, is that yes, this isnt on the court score in the record that he has broken today. But what many know him as, off the court, know that his legacy is gonna be so much bigger than what he accomplished on this court. And i think you can feel that in the reaction to him getting this milestone, but this isnt just a score, this isnt just a basketball player, this is an icon for so many people, not just on the court but of course with the world as well. So i guess omar, dont just shut up and double, thats one way to say it right . Thinking about those moments when, maradona answered, i was rhetorical. Nice to talk to, nice to see you tonight. I want to turn now to bob costas, because bob, look, this is so significant, as omar alluded to, it wasnt the idea of just points on the board, this record was set in 1984, before lebron james was you born. Here we are with the significant moment, Kareem Abduljabbar watching on, as it in this moment. It was done, after 1410 games in the nba. What is your reaction to this monumental moment . Well, and sports will be like little, perhaps significant, perhaps interesting coincidences. Much has been made at the fact that these plane at the very lie highlevel. Not just in italy now and elite player at age 38. He scored 38 points tonight, as you pass the record, 36 given the record, he had one more basket. Perhaps it will be a footnote. But the lakers, who are fighting for a playoff spot. He is much better as an individual the next years of royal. People will necessarily remember that, but in the way this weekend context really. Given that point, hes been averaging 30. Points a game this season. This is been a significant here from already, in terms of his average, in terms of stat lines. But the idea that it was driven. Some thought, could he do it . Averaging 30. Averaging 27 or 20 china over the weekend. The fact that to happen tonight, and inner drive coming out just at that cherry on top. Yeah, he has had an extraordinary career, laura, by any measure. Ive always thought that when you talk with the greatest Basketball Players will time, when you include centers and, that its almost like including pictures with position players, or goalies with forwards, wingers, and defenceman. In hockey, centers are separate category. I dont know how you compare kareem, wilt chamberlain, shaq, or a Healthy People wild, or akeem elijah won or brazil, i dont know how you compare them. When you come down to the greatest player of alltime seems to have gone down to lebron or Michael Jordan won bronze of one for. I dont think this diminishes kareem in any way, and i believe if you have a conversation in basketball, you have to have that conversation. You can compare will to kareem, you can compare bill russell if you want, to shaq. At separate thing, forcing cars are separate from centers. And the lebron good jordan debate will gone, for the sake of context , ten 17 if you just talk about wealth, his pure numbers of points and rebounds per game, a ridiculous. But they came in a different era. Michaels teams won six championships, he was six for six in the finals. Not as benign finals, which is a great achievement, his teams have won four and theyve lost five. He won titles with three different teams. The calves, the heat, and now the lakers, of Course Michael was identified only with the bose, and towards the end of the career, the Competitive Jones got him again he came back and played two more years with wizards, which is almost a footnote. So michael is six for six in the finals. He won ten scoring championships, and he was the mvp of all six finals in which he competed. So that is a tough resume for anyone to exceed, but if anyone is in that discussion, and kobe is there someone, magic there somewhere, Larry Barrett is there somewhere. But if you boil it down to those two non centers. I said the consensus is Michael Jordan lebron james. Michael jordans athleticism and skill, undeniable. Just think of the list that lebron is on, carl mcglone, Kareem Abduljabbar, kobe bryant of course, Michael Jordan. But from a Fans Perspective, i look at this not in terms of comparing to get the ultimate title of goat. But i look at it when curry passed reggie miller. The idea of the Fans Perspective of how exciting it is to see this dark moment. In fact lebron actually commented on what this moment meant. He was emotional just thinking about where he would rank, in really the worlds history. Here he is. This is now making the go . Im gonna let everyone else decide to that is, but its Great Partnership talk i want to hear you save. I am seeing myself against anyone is a four play this game. Irans gonna decide who their favorite ours. I know whatever into this table a recent night and wackadoo on the floor. Fire suit can the best to ever bother him, as so many other guys im just happy to be part of their journey. Here in that response, the level of humility, butler just of the ideas oh one said stay president , we hosted the kid from akron we. Both dorian, the last hour with not a pass, she played a clip that i did with him about 20 years ago, when news is coming out of high school in akron. And i said to him, and in need to put him on the spot, but i think is a fair question because jumping right from high school to a hall of fame career. No high will have or have the low scrutiny le pen for it. His games are televised, his High School Games for 12 hours on espn. Its five games or so the as it havent, his team, the cavaliers, was in the lottery. They are in the extra him. And theyve suffered made for the, better his consequential player from the start. But it took a while, before cleveland was able to win a championship, and he actually took a securities route. He went to miami, he won championships there. Then he went back to cleveland, and he got them a championship. An epic championship, when they defeated the very, very strong golden state warriors. And then he cant, lakers and manage to get one more, and still counting hoping for more. As he said in the postgame interview, he said that just because you scaled this mountain, that doesnt mean that he wants to quit. He thinks is gonna, play hes an incredible, shape he takes care of his body. He thinks you can play two or three more years, extend that record out. But also pursue a championship. Theres always detractors now. In a social media world, people take shots and anybody, no matter how accomplish they are. So to block on lebron for those who Take Jordan Side of the argument, is that he picked his team you might say miami imputed chris bought in jane weighed two and championship. And then yeah a lot of Kareem Abduljabbar did win one championship with Oscar Robertson in milwaukee, is a great player with the bucks, won five of his sick whose every circumstance divert the best you can say is that flower will always be in the argument Lebron Michael jordan, if they play for 100, years what weve been the discussion of the tiny handful of great players. And sometimes people who prefer the player from their own era they think that personal be forgotten. Im old enough to remember when hank and passed babe ruth. And of course there is a racial element in, that regrettably, which hank chimed over, and its eventually favorite remains a figure of legend, and hank aaron has his place, everlastingly, in the baseball history. And that argument about for ron and Michael Jordan will ron. Its part of what makes sports interesting. So five to say that theyre two very risk to have played. So you go and weve been lucky enough in recent years, to watch some of the greatest players in their respective force. Ive. If that record was set, it must before came jim was born. Imagine, a month from now, this good to have sight said immunity really if it takes is time to do it, we shall see. Are you good to hear is that mina. Thank you so much, bob costas. Thank, you laura. Weve got a lot more to come later in the show tonight. Coming out, Somebody Else whos trying to put some points on the board, President Biden. All right its a pretty big night, we have a lot to talk about here, and here in the studio with me cnns senior political analyst, mark preston, also eva mccann, National Politics reporter, paul begala ands tristan so shes anderson, all here with me to talk about this monumental night as well. Lets begin with the atmosphere in the room, where is happening. Because it was not a particularly friendly audience, or angry one, there are some heckling, listen to this. Some republicans want medicare and Social Security sunset. Im not saying its a majority. Let me give you, and anybody who doubts it, contact my office, ill give you a copy, ill give you a copy of the proposal. I enjoy conversion. You know, means of congress doesnt keep the program is the way they are, im not saying someone short of, you are not even a significant price being proposed by individuals. I mean politely not naming, the thats been proposed by some of you. Look, folks. The idea is, that were not gonna be moved in to being threatened to default on the debt, if we dont respond. So folks, as we all apparently agree, Social Security medicare, is off the books now, right . They may have to call him the Lemonade Maker after that, paul, whats your take on that . Joe biden has a secret weapon. The republicans. They showed him to be happy while they were energetic, well they were unhinged. I think he dispelled a lot of the myths about joe biden. Hes not too old, lebron is 38, no its kind on him to retire. Republicans confirms all the negative myths, the democrats tell about them. They seemed unhinged, they were rude, they do in fact have a proposal, senator rick scott of florida, page 18 of his plan, for president was 100 right more than that the republicans made him look good. I feel theres a lot of folks who really have not watched premise was, questions the way they do the other party in opposition. Normally it, doesnt happen in our opposition, especially during the State Of The Union. The thing that was so powerful, was that President Biden set them up, he baited them into it and he took the bait. Until that moment, if you are nervous democrat, whos a little concerned about 2024 it was a little slow, it was both rushed, and low energy, and that moment happened. And invigorated President Biden a little bit, and shifted the momentum to where if you are nervous democrat before, it probably werent as nervous afterwards. Was a little bit of a here jacqui tacky, and then knowing there had been the proposal by at least some. Did you see that way . Laura, it is frankly, tacky if my mom was here, i she would say these folks have no home training. It allowed him to exhibit, strength and really pivot to an issue where democrats, are taking a very popular position. Listen republicans are trying to hear this, but when you ask them what programs they want to cut. So the Natural Inclination is to go towards those social programs. Theyre gonna have to answer to, this President Biden tonight but this question find and center. Mark, it was about 30 or 40 minutes in, where they start to have this moment. First everyone is trying to be, played a little stuffy, and show a more mature tone. But they believe, republicans, but he was challenging them, and saying something untruthful. They called him a liar in that moment. Is there some accuracy there . Let me just say this, this is the perfect snapshot, the past two hours is a perfect snapshot of where we had comments beginning the speech, Standing Ovations for the new house speaker, and then that train went off the tracks. And weve got backs really where we were in american politics. We had republicans on the floor theyre arguing. But romney and george santos, we had that going on. We had Marjorie Taylor, greene who has become more of a establishment type. And yet today, tonight, she did her bona fides again, and throughout some red meat. And its a very, again Sarah Huckabee sanders throat red meat in the republican response. Itll just show how difficult the next two years will be to get anything done, because democrats and republicans, while theyre smile and each other, and of pleasantries. The fact, is i dont think we can be able to get together to get anything done or the next two years. But there, say a smile on your, face theyre all trying to take your place. President biden is asking for bipartisan schiff tonight, the question the mark president is raising as, well is really actually get it. And we ask a republican about that very moment, congressman mike johnson is next. Lets go what you gon do . You aint talkin bout nothin new projects means new project managers. You need to hire. I need indeed. Indeed you do. When you sponsor a job, you immediately get your shortlist of quality candidates, whose resumes on indeed match your job criteria. Visit indeed. Com hire and get started today. In his first State Of The Union redress, when republicans now in control the house, President Biden calling on republicans to work with him to pass legislation. But he ended up sparring with some hardline members of the gop, some of whom even tackle the president of the United States. Lets get some perspective now from republican representative Mike Johnston from louisiana. Congressman, thank you for joining us this evening. It was quite a night. And the speaker, mccarthy, also encourage many other members, in fact all of the members, to be polite, for a lack of a better word here. I witnessed, as you did inside the chamber, a number of outbursts. And i wonder if you can respond to how you felt in that moment about the atmosphere that was within the chambers this evening im not one thats into catcalls. Its not my style. But i understand the emotion that was in the room, i think when you heard a lot of the outbursts as its been referred to, is when the president was i think blatantly saying something that he knows is not true. He suggested that the republicans, or many republicans i think he said, want to sunset Social Security and medicare. Its not a fact. There is not a Single Member of the House Republican conference that is ever said such a thing. And its certainly not the position weve had. Weve been very clear about our pretension to save those programs. And we thought it was an unfair statement. Well, there was that moment where he did look and talk about finally a moment of unity here. And the idea of everyone agreeing that those two programs ought to remain in place. But theres obviously been some discussion by some members about ways in which to reflect on or have it come up for a vote or appropriations purposes. Are you clear tonight that there is absolute unity within the Republican Party, that neither program will be touched . Yeah, look, im the Vice Chairman of the House Republicans. Im in the number five leadership positions. Im very close to all my colleagues. I dont know a single one who suggested anything contrary to that. We made a commitment to save those programs, but what we understand is youve got to solidify the foundations of those programs so that we can maintain them. Theyre on a trajectory to go bankrupt in less than ten years. So, we have to fix it, we need grownups in the room to make, you know, tough decisions on our budgeting going forward. And were counting on the white house to have a good faith negotiation with us. Its not a good start to misstate the position of the other side. And i think thats what my colleagues were reacting to. When you look at the prospects of bipartisanship, obviously, theres quite the narrow majority, as youre well aware in the house. But theres also the president of the United States today seeming to call for an end to fighting, talk about what the American People have made clear that they want. Obviously, there is a divided congress. And certainly, the white house of a Different Party than those of the majority of the house. Do you see an opportunity for bipartisanship on any key efforts that you hope to promote right now . Well, we certainly hope so. I mean, thats the way this place is supposed to work. Youre going to have people with very different ideas and philosophies and visions for the government. But at the end of the day, we have to get together and work those things out. Thats how consensus is built. Thats how the founders set this system up to work. And we strayed away from that. And i think theres a willingness on both sides of the aisle to do that. But we have to come together on ideas that make sense. And what we heard tonight, largely, was in our view a speech that was really detached from the reality that i think most American People are actually feeling, with regard to rising cost and rising crime and the open border and all the problems are facing. We didnt hear the president actually addressing this directly, and talk about the reality of those problems. So, you have to agree on what the problems are before you can come together and fix them. I think thats a big concern we have. Tonight what where the areas where you felt there was that detachment . Because he did mention the idea of the border, fentanyl, there is a moment, perhaps, caught some people offguard in the chamber, that the president was speaking about fentanyl and about overdosing in this country, and the tragic numbers that we are seeing. And then he agreed with the idea of the chanting that the border was a contributing factor there. Were you surprised by any moments that the president seems to agree with your party on these issues . We were shocked to hear a couple of those lines. Im sure a Speech Writer put those in for political purposes. But thats not been the position of this president. Clearly, it was his policies that created the Immigration Catastrophe we had right now. We had hearings for the last 48 hours here in the congress, in the house, where experts and Border Patrol agents and people directly involved on the ground came to tell their stories about the horrors theyre facing every day because the department of Homeland Security and the Biden Administration and the president himself, because of the Policies Davin acted. So, it was not a speech that matched reality. And that was our concern with it. We heard more tonight about cracking down on junkies than we did illegal immigration and the threat from china. You know, there were some lines in there that they of course inserted for applause. But it does not match his actions. And that is what people are concerned about. Congressman, if you are only glass half, full maybe they are just in there to reflect what he thought. I hear your overall sentiment. But i think we can both agree the idea of not a single president has created the full Immigration Crisis we are seeing. But i understand the point that youre making. There was a response, of, course from the former Trump Press Secretary and current arkansas governor, Sarah Huckabee sanders. Delivered a rebuttal of course to this evening. She makes clear there is a strong push, in terms of her making, one for a generational and cultural change that needs take place. I wonder, is that the argument you think that is going to be the most effective for convincing voters why republicans should leave . I believe thats a big part of it. I believe we have to cast our vision and present our message to the American People. But the thing about conservatives and the Republican Partys we stand for tried and true principles. They dont change. Ronald reagan said in his farewell address, they call me the great communicator, but i really wasnt that. I was communicating great things, the same great things that have been in our nation since the founding. Because we believe in individual freedom, limited government, fiscal responsibility, free markets, human dignity. These are the things that made us great. And thats what we stand for. So i believe when we make that case to the American People, they agree with us. I believe we are still a center right country. And they want sanity to store two republican policy. And i look forward to House Republic Majority that weve been given. Here and to making that case as we head into the 2024 cycle. Were excited about that. Im very optimistic about the future. While, i love the optimism. We hope to hear the arguments soon. Thank you so much for joining us this evening. Thank you. And President Biden telling the country that he wants to, quote, finish the job multiple times in his address. The question is, will voters give him the chance to do so . But in 2024. He was touting his legislative wins, asking for bipartisan cooperation and asking the American People to let him, quote, finish the job. But with tensions high on capitol hill, the question is, what will the next two years really look like . Were back now with mark preston, even mccann, paul begala, and kristin saltese anderson. And listen to this guys, because biden said this no less than 12 times by my account. The idea of let him finish the job. Listen to this. Weve been sent here to finish the job, in my view. I signed a bipartisan bill that cut Shipping Costs by 90 , helping american farmers, businessmen, and consumers. Lets finish the job. Lets finish the job and close the loopholes that allow very wealthy to avoid paying their taxes. So my plea to some of you, at least some of you in the audience, lets finish the job and make the savings permanent. Expand coverage of medicaid. You know, in a way, eva, the idea of lets finish the job is a different way of saying, like, give me more time. Give me more time to connect the dots between how your feeling and how you ought to feel. What was your take . Yeah, it is a tough sell to make that argument, to sort of say, listen, im working here. And you might be hurting now, but give me more time. I will say this though, President Biden, hes always been this person that sort of tries to speak in a regular way to regular people. So, that is a strength here. And maybe he is able to make this argument in a way that others cannot. He talked about the popular programs tonight. Like the tile tax credit. Basically saying corporations need to stop in our face and pay their fair share taxes. And i think that is ultimately sort of what helps him make this argument. But it is a difficult one to make, as Many Americans are still hurting. And he did actually speak that as well. He did a list of Consumer Grievances as well, trying to appeal to the American People. But the idea to convince, that we have a lot of arbitrary deadlines we set up for our president , the first 100 days, two years, and hes fighting to be reelected, possibly. The idea that hes saying, look, give me more time. This has just come into, affected hasnt come into implementation yet. How do you see . It a couple things, he saying, one, give me more time because all these things ive done have not hit you in the pocketbooks. Hes also saying, as we talk about balloons this past week, was this his Trial Balloon . He floats it up, finish the job, sounds like a Great Campaign slogan. You can see him standing in some arena somewhere a few years from now, and everybody has a sign that says finish the job. Because thats what political tides do, they like grabbing onto a slogan and running with it. Question is, does he have enough horses in congress right now to get the job finished . And i would argue that he does not. Just look at the Democratic Party right now. We had kyrsten sinema, she didnt even sit with the democrats, she sat with a couple republicans. By the way, she made sure people saw that she was sitting with the republicans with her choice of wardrobe, this bright yellow dress where she totally stood out. So, joe biden wants to finish the job. I dont know he has the horses in congress that are gonna help finish the job. Speaking on slogans on that point, and by the way, i think shes wearing a bit of a lime neon green. Maybe a chartreuse shes wearing . But let me ask you on this point. Speaking of slogans, former president donald trump, picking up on the idea of finishing the job and saying i am running for president to end the destruction of our country and to complete the Unfinished Business of making America Great again. He saw slogan, trying to capitalize. Yeah, thats the highest compliment he could be paying joe biden. I actually think its masterful, because, you know, if things are going great in the country, you cruised to reelection, ronald reagan, bill clinton. It was basically stay the course. But joe biden cant say stay the course, because most people think were not going in the right direction. But he cant say its time for change, because he wants to be reelected. So, i think thats really brilliant. And i think his path forward is really easy, really clear. Not easy, its obvious. And its this. He proposes these popular things eva talked about. 35 dollar insulin, Free Community college, make corporations pay their fair share, get rid of those awful hidden fees. And then, poor Kevin Mccarthy has an impossible choice. He other has to pass them and give bidens accomplishments to run on, or killed him and give him issues to run on. Its a winwin for biden. And its a lose lose for poor Kevin Mccarthy. Hes going to call for an 18th ballot speaker and hope Somebody Else gets the job. Because he cant do it. He cant win. Theres no way to win. Does that match with the polls or how people feel about it though . So, when voters are asked do you think joe biden has accomplished a lot, two thirds of independents say no, they dont actually think hes done very much during these first two years of his presidency. So, his problem is saying, look, youve got a fever, the only prescription is more joe biden. That thats the answer thats going to solve all the problems that voters clearly say theyre experiencing when they say only a quarter of americans believe the country is heading in the right direction. Republicans on the other hand, theyre going to push back, not by saying joe biden hasnt done enough, but that is done too much. That finish the job is him saying i want to do more of what ive been doing the past two years, when republicans would say nothing more than, you want to do more spending that drove up inflation . You want to do more of what you havent really been doing at the border . There are lots of ways republicans take this and turn it back on him and say more joe biden is not what the country needs. We saw a little bit of that with Sarah Huckabee sanders, governor of arkansas, talk about the idea Big Government and the idea of what was failing among the democrats. Everyone, stay with, hey were gonna come back to these points and more tonight, because the president s and republicans had a moment of agreement, they agree that the border is a problem. Now, the question is, can they agree on what the solution ought to be, what President Biden said about all of that is next. When it was time to sign up for a medicare plan mom couldnt decide. The 1 pharmacist recommended vitamin and supplement brand. President biden addressing security at the u. S. Mexico border during his State Of The Union speech this evening. Specifically, the increasing amount of fentanyl crossing the border and even calling for more funding to address the crisis. We now have a Record Number of personnel working to secure the border, arresting 8000 human smugglers, seizing over 23,000 pounds of fentanyl and just the last several months. Weve launched a new border plan last month. Unlawful migration from cuba, haiti, nicaragua, venezuela has come down 97 as a consequence of that. But american border problems wont be fixed until congress acts. If we dont pass my comprehensive Immigration Reform, at least pass my plan to provide the equipment and officers to secure the border. Back with me now, mark preston, eva mckend, paul begala, and chris still so tees anderson. Let me let me ask you, paul, it turned his back on congress, accusing all this time that you havent done enough to secure the border. He saying actually, look to a different branch. This argument goes all the way back to mccain kennedy. This is an argument that congress should be able to get together on, they should be able to figure it out. I mean, there should be more enforcement on the border, there should be better resources to take care of those who are seeking solace in a country that was built upon the backs of immigrants. And the fact that politics are just doing to get in the way. And i would argue that democrats and republicans have got to come to a table together equally to try and get something done. And just again, not to be a negative nelly here, i just dont see that happening. I dont see, at this state, how democrats and republicans can get something accomplished that is so easy but yet is so far away from this. Speaker mccarthys face seems to agree with the statement. But this is a perennial argument because this conversation has become a racialized cultural battle, thats really devoid of common sense. I was just in vermont a few weeks ago. They have a Labor Shortage there. The Business Community there really wants there to be a pathway to citizenship or at the very least away for some of these undocumented folks, who have really become members of the community, to have some way to get work authorization, so they can fill in a job need, a business need. So, you know, yes, we hear this argument time and time again. We heard of course the backlash from republicans tonight, screaming the border, the border. Weve seen democrats really take inconsistent positions on immigration. And we are in this loop that really doesnt make any sense. I knew he wasnt right. Biden is now flipping the script. The democrats had begun with the compassion agenda. And it hasnt worked. If theres disorder at the border, and there is, theres chaos at the border, and there is, people wont be open to your compassionate message until you bring order to the border. So, i looked it up. Customs and Border Patrol the southwest, im from texas, my part of the country, u. S. Mexico border, peaks in 2013 under barack obama. It actually dropped, personnel at the border dropped and percentage under donald trump, democrats never called him on. Why not . Finally, i think biden has the ordering right. We have to have order at the border. Ive talked to biden aides. They think they wont get. It they think surely all get more order at the border, youll get more Border Patrol. They think they wont get it. This is very harsh, but some of them have told me that they think the republicans want chaos at the border. Last thought . Interesting. The idea that you have to sequence it, you do Border Security first and then you have the broader conversation about pathway to citizenship, thats what republicans have been saying for almost two decades now, since the mccain bill that mark brought up. So, if this biden trying to call republicans on it, and saying this is for decades what you said you want, part a, part b, if he really means, It Republicans are on record for a long time saying if to secure the border first before you can do anything else. But its a false choice. I feel its never that way. I mean, even when president obama made concessions, Immigration Reform was never really in play. The illusionary troy is a politics everyone. So were hard at work helping them achieve financial freedom. Were proud to serve people everywhere, in investing for the retirement they envision. From the plains to the coasts, we help americans invest for their future. And help communities thrive. All right, we are covering two major stories tonight. President bidens state of the Union Address, and of course lebron james, aka king james, breaking the nbas alltime scoring record. Lebron for the record hes got it hes done it, he has smashed the record held by Kareem Abduljabbar since 1984. By the way, set even before he was even born. Were going to break down the huge night for basketball in just a moment. But first you can see the relief on his face. One of the most emotional moments of the State Of The Union, the parents, as you just saw of tyre nichols receiving an extended standing ovation. President biden paying tribute to their son while also pushing the Police Reform. All of us, as many of you personally know, there is no words to describe the heartache and grief of losing a child. But imagine, imagine if you lost that child at the hands of the law. Heres what tyres mother shared with me when i spoke with her. When i asked her how she has the courage to carry on and speak out, she said through faith in god, her son was, quote, A Beautiful Soul and something good will come of this. Imagine how much courage and care that takes. But so to us, to all of us, we all want the same thing, Neighborhoods Free of violence, Law Enforcement who earns the community trusts. Just as every copp who pins on that badge in the morning has a right to go home at night, so does everybody else out there. [applause] our children have a right to come home safely. Equal protection under the law is the covenant we have with each other in america. I want to bring in senior political analyst mark preston, National Politics reporter eva mckend, and political commentator Bakari Sellers and Kristen Soltis anderson. Also with us, ron johnson, captain of the Missouri State highway patrol. Hes also the former Incident Commander in ferguson, missouri. Also here joining our panels civil rights attorney areva martin. A full house for an extraordinarily important issue. Bakari, ill begin with you. Because the president recognizing, and again, we are not even a week from the funeral of tyre nichols. This poor family has joined a sorority and fraternity that nobody wants to be a part of and everyones fighting to ever have to be a part of again. When you look at a divided congress and you see that the president didnt even stand for that notion, what do you think are the prospects . Well, my heart aches for the family. And it acts for the family that will be next. Because someone else will get a knock on their door that says Law Enforcement just brutally beat or shot your child. That is going to happen. And the reason its going to happen is because many republicans in the United States congress dont have the fortitude or the empathy or the understanding to change and challenge the status quo. Were having a very interesting conversation in this country about culture versus policy. Look, people have said give them body cameras. We gave them body cameras. People set train. Them we train them. People said we need more cost and higher pay. We gave them more pay, we give them more cause. And this brutalization still happens at the hands of Law Enforcement. Its a question about culture. But in the end of the day, i was in the room with tim scott, lindsey graham, and the families of victims, along with ben crump. And you could see that tim scott actually genuinely wanted to tackle this issue. The problem is tim scott didnt have any help on his side of the aisle. And Kevin Mccarthy and Mitch Mcconnell simply dont have the want or the fortitude or the empathy to understand what its like to be black in america, to be afraid that your childs not going to come home at night. And therefore, this will never change. This is gonna be cyclical. It will have another george floyd moment. Well have another nichols moment. I just pray to god that is not a sellers moment again. You know, we think about what bakari is saying. And really, i have to tell you, as a mother, it breaks my heart to think about even the word next in this conversation. But we do go from never again to once again to once again to never again to once again. Speaking of senator tim scott though. He is someone whos been named oftentimes as a prospect for 2024. Given the challenges in terms of trying to get bipartisan buyin, to change and have Police Reform. Does that impact the ability of tim scott to be considered a bipartisan ally in this particular movement . No, i think that tim scott, to bakaris point, does want to try it something. That i dont think theres a willing congress, certainly on the republican side. There may even be some on the democratic side as well. I mean, there is this belief that every Police Officer is evil, right. And i think that is an incredible incredibly destructive thing. Because its not absolutely true. Its not fair to all the good cops. But to tim scott, you know, tim scott is somebody who has come to congress. He was the only black republican for how many years, and hes kind of kept his head down. Hes incredibly intelligent. Hes somebody who, should he choose to run for president , is certainly going to get a lot of. Looks if he can get the policing thing through, thats only gonna be helpful to him. Because he will do it in a way that i think conservatives will be accepting of. Because its true, there are conservatives who want to see policing fixed as well, right. There is a movement on the conservative side. Tim scott, if he can ride that wave, he potentially catches fire. I want to bring in captain ron johnson. And as youre speaking about this issue, it is a moment to consider that its a singular person in a black senator whos looking at that on the republican side. I think back to a speech not so long ago of lbj, at his State Of The Union talking about the race problem not just being one, its an american problem. Such as to paraphrase the Policing Program in this country. But captain johnson, tyre nichols parents were in the crowd tonight. We saw them with a standing ovation. They have been pushing for Police Reform as well. But the republican judiciary chairman jim jordan says, look, this early type of Police Reform, he wasnt sure that would actually prevent an occurrence like tyre nichols. What do you say to that . You, know i think we are, in our country, have to be honest that we are going to face this again. But i think we have to start somewhere. And i think it will happen, in fact. We have to start somewhere. But to say we do nothing means were going to continue to be here. This fraternity and sorority will continue to grow. So, i think one man can started. And then there can be people that follow. So, i think congress has to stand. I think if its going to take that challenge, we must do it. Because ive got a son, youve got a son. And its hard, when we know that this is going to happen. I mean, look at tonights, the galleries stood for tyres parents. But we talked about the george floyd mandate, they would not stand. So, it makes me think, what was the real honesty and compassion with you standing when the president asked you to stand and introduce them, and you would not stand that something would really change their lives and all of our lives in this country . It is really sad to think about the performative aspects of politics in this country. And of course, what the consequences are. I want to bring in areva to this conversation. Because areva, thinking about tyre nichols parents, were still learning very much about the investigation. It still unfolding. Weve got these five officers charged, with among other crimes, Second Degree murder. Were also learning though that one of those officers have is charged with Second Degree murder, along with other crimes, actually admitted to investigators, areva, that he took photos of tyre nichols on his personal cell phone after the beating. And then sent it to others. And in fact, this is the moment the New York Times is identifying as the photo in question. Look, theres still a lot we dont know. But this is incredibly disturbing, to think about a photo being taken. We dont know why, who was sent to specifically, or the motivation perhaps. But what to say to you, that this moment would have been captured on a personal cell phone and disseminated . And mind you, theres not a photo of him helping this person. Well, its not a photo of him helping, laura, because we know they did not help tyre nichols. Thats the sad part, or one of the sad parts. And the inhumanity of the officer, now an ex officer, taking a picture of somebody whos brutally been beaten and bruised and literally is losing their life. And then you have that picture go out to individuals outside the Police Department. There have been rumors on the internet that this officer had sent this picture to someone who is either an Ex Girlfriend or some woman that perhaps had been involved with mr. Nichols at some point, maybe some kind of love triangle. But there were rumors that this couldve been personally motivated in some way, this beating. And we dont know if any of them will ever be verified. But we do know the depravity of someone who would take a photo like that and disseminated. And we are hearing that other officers are being disciplined. And the District Attorney is looking at filing additional charges of some officers who may have been involved in falsifying police records. We know that the emt individuals who showed up at the scene have been fired, and they may also be facing charges. So, i think one of the things that were not talking a lot about is the captain in that Police Department. And although she got a lot of credit early on for acting quickly in terms of firing the five officers who have been charged with Second Degree murder, i think she bears a great deal of responsibility for what we are seeing. This nature of the information thats coming out, as well as, you know, she was responsible for putting that Scorpion Unit together. She put together a similar kind of Crime Fighting unit when she was in atlanta, or she oversaw one in atlanta. So, i think weve got to look from the top to the bottom of the anti Police Department and hold everyone who is involved in this accountable. I think the word you use was depravity. And so apropos for what we have seen. Areva, thank you so much. You know, i want to turn to someone who, although weve been focusing a lot on the extraordinary celebration of becoming the leading scorer of the nba, we also know that part of the appeal, the draw, and the celebration surrounding one king, lebron james, is that hes got it points on the board in matters that matter as well, including Social Justice as well. Hes been outspoken as it relates to the idea of Police Encounters and trying as so many of us are to avoid the once again. But the news out of los angeles tonight is certainly something to celebrate. 39 years. Because that, that period of time, is what it took to the nba to have a new alltime leading scorer. Lebron james taking the crown now from Kareem Abduljabbar during tonights game against the Oklahoma City thunder. And among those celebrating king jamess record breaking feat, while, the man giving the state of the Union Address, President Biden. Take a listen. Lebron, congratulations. With your whole Heart And Soul you broke a heck of a record. You the game, but more than that, with kareem and bill russell and others who came before you, you challenge and inspired the nation to be better, do better, and live up to our promises. Keep it going, man. Keep the faith. And congratulations to you and your wonderful family, your mom gloria, your wife, savannah, and you beautiful children, ronnie, bryce, and zoe. God bless you all. I love the background music, i just have to say that everyone. Cnns omar jimenez in los angeles with more on king james tonight. Omar, whats it looking like . Truly a moment in history. Lebron james becoming the alltime leading scorer in nba history. He would be the first to admit, he didnt think he would be at this point. Yet when you look at everything hes accomplished in his career, who else would it have been . And its no secret, were talking about more than 38,000 Career Points at the highest level of basketball over a career that spanned 20 years to this point. Thats an accomplishment in itself. But when the moment finally happened, him hitting a fadeaway off the left elbow, almost nothing but net essentially, the entire arena erupted, anticipating that moment. Thats why they showed up to this arena on a tuesday night against a nonplayoff team in the Oklahoma City thunder, they wanted to witness history. And there was a question about whether lebron what do it tonight, would do it tuesday night i should say, or whether he would wait until thursday night. To do it against the milwaukee bucks. And it was very clear. And the first few minutes of the, game lebron was going after it tonight. And he solidified that goal over the course of the game, and just really, with so much more to go before the game ended, he was embraced by family, there is so many others that were here who have been cheering lebron on from before he entered the nba. And for them to witness this moment, alongside the many, many fans that were here, truly a special moment. Not just in nba history, but in history, laura. Thanks, omar. So much. Listen, President Biden is not the only name paying tribute to lebrons record breaking feat. Former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson tweeting his congratulations, writing, quote, this historic moment is so special because youll never see it on that lebron james. Hes always been a pass first leader, whose ability to make his teammates better is oneofakind. Which makes his record, breaking the record even more incredible. L. A. Mayor karen bass tweeting a picture of city hall lit up to honor jamess record breaking feat, as well as Kareem Abduljabbar, who held the record for decades. Saying, quote, you both make us so proud. Los angeles is and always will be a city of champions. For more, i want to bring in our own chevy, and cnn contributor carrie jenkins, host of the carry championship. All reply to, you cousin lie that you here tonight, carrie. What a moment. I want to play for everyone, hes giving a Press Conference right now. Hes actually responding to a question of what it was like to have Kareem Abduljabbar present to watch this moment. Listen to this. I think its great for the game of basketball, you know, its something we talked about for years and years. You, know im a historian of the game. So i know what guys like kareem and will and magic and bird, oscar robinson, im could be up here all night talk about so many greats and legends. For me, personally, you know, its just an honor to be named with the greats. Carry, not just name with the great, now the greatest scorer of alltime. You have said it can i just explain, take a moment, the record has been in place for 39 years. Lebron james is 30 years old. Before he was born, this record was in place. And for lebron, i dont want us to get Greatness Fatigue. We get Greatness Fatigue for 20 years he has been great. And i do believe so many times we ignore how great he is, because were used to it, very similar to tom brady if you will. What tom what lebron did tonight will live for three, four, maybe five decades before someone will come along and break his record. Because he has lived at this level. Let us not forget this. It is so special, and i am so glad that weve been able to witness in realtime at having Kareem Abduljabbar passed the torch. You, know its funny. My sons bedtime is a 30. My husband will come up and said, wake up, you need to see this moment in history, okay. The king is about to break the alltime record and be a record score. But let me tell you, the pink shoes you see in, that carried here point. The pink shoes have handwritten notes on them. And what it says is stay present. And the kid from akron, perhaps one of the reasons is apropos, he did this on a fade away. Look, he will not fade away from our collective thoughts. One, because it unbelievable athleticism. But to, because hes always reminded us that he is the kid from akron, and has given back to a community that he came from. While, first off, im glad you let your husband and you both agree to let your son stay up for this beautiful moment. Its important if he sees this. If you see it, you can believe it. Because the suns are just as excited, lebron sons. I sent a message today. And i said it is so apropos that it is black history month. You are black history, realtime. I saw a shirt where jayz wrote this is black magic. Lets take a moment to honor what this kid from akron has done. I mean, when we think of the greats, he will live in this mount rushmore, if you will of all grades. And what lebron did tonight, i can tell you this. On the list of great, this is probably number two or maybe number three. Lebron has done so many Amazing Things on and off the court. And i often believe because hes held himself to such an excellence at such a young age, at 18 years old, straight from high school to the lead, weve forgotten how great he is. His interview just the other day, a full sit down with somebody, saying i want to win championships. Yes, this is great that i have a scoring, title but i want to win ships. And i just cannot tell you how happy i am for him, because there are very few who can come out and call themselves the king and live up to that. Were watching in realtime, and im glad we had the opportunity to do so. All, that and he remade space jam and house party. I mean [laughter] there is a lot more to talk about tonight. Cari champion, were so glad to see you tonight. So much more. Youve got the visual of the chalk coming out over you in celebration, of when lebron james love. It. Nice to see you as. Always good to see you too, queen. Thank you so much, i have a good evening. Listen, while thats happening on the other side of the country, weve got whats happening here in washington d. Liberty. President biden giving a fiery defense of his first two years in office tonight, firing back at republicans who heckled him during a state of the Union Address. The question is, did the president succeed and selling his agenda for the next two years . Joining me now, congressman David Cicilline, a rhode island democrat and a member of the House Foreign Affairs and judiciary committee. Congressman, im so glad youre here with us this evening. Welcome. I really want to have a sense of your impression of a really powerful set of moments during todays state of the Union Address. And it had a lot to do with some of the heckling that was going on inside of the chamber. What was your impression to the moments that seemed strong together, where the president had to deal with being tackled by members of the Republican Party . Yes, look, i think the president did a magnificent job. It was a strong speech. And i think in all of those incidences where he was tackled, which is profoundly disrespectful, this is the president of the United States, giving an address to the nation, not just to the congress about the state of the United States, State Of The Union. And to see members of the Republican Party heck hole and shout and interrupt the president , i thought was terribly disrespectful. The good news is the president held up masterfully and push back hard and in funny ways. I think he made his point about the economic progress to be made. He spoke about creating 12 million jobs in two years, more than any other president has done in four. The lowest Unemployment Rate in a generation. The renaissance of american manufacturing. Bring down the cost of prescription drugs, particularly the cost of insulin. You know, recounted the investments made to rebuild american infrastructure, be sure we can compete. And ships manufacturing. So, it was a great speech where were catching a lot of work that hes done. But he has to finish the job and contain to get our job done on behalf the American People. I think the behavior of the republicans, particularly those that heckled us, was a distraction, biden take away in any way from the president s Strong Performance tonight. And is really powerful message. You are correct that he had this sort of jewel message this evening. One in part saying that there has been a lot that is already been accomplished under this his watch. But also the idea that the job is not finished. I wondered if you saw that statement interpreted to mean, look, this was him talking about reelection or the idea of, was it simply, look, theres still more work to be done among this chamber of congress and with myself as well, how did you see . It i think it was definitely the latter. I think the president was properly taking credit for a lot of the work that hes lead, that is brought real results and improve the lives of the American People. But he acknowledges theres more work to do. Theres still too many people struggling with the high cost of food and gas and other things in their life. And he understands we have to do more to move forward on things like paid family leave, affordable childcare, reducing gun violence, taking on big tech, securing our border. So, theres a lot of work to be done. But i thought thats what was so masterful about the president s remarks. He the tremendous progress weve been made in the difference these policies have been made in the lives of American People. But he quickly acknowledged theres a lot more to do and he called on us to Work Together in a bipartisan way to deliver ourselves to the American People. I think is talking to us in the country that we have a job to do to continue to live results for the American People. When you mention the word bipartisan, i have to go back to the atmosphere that seem to be apparent from the audience matching what was happening. You are inside the chambers when you heard the continuous heckling, when you heard comments about him being a liar, when you heard statements being made that were blaming him for a number of issues. He certainly did have a retort, and one that did not shy away from addressing what was so obvious in the room. But did it give you a sense of pessimism or optimism about the ability to Work Together, if this was one of the ways in which members of congress were treating the head of the executive branch . Yeah, no, it makes me sad. I think whatever you think about the president , whatever Political Party you come from, you hope that people respect the office. This was the president of the United States, as i said, not to speaking to congress but speaking to the American People. This was a very special occasion, where the president came before the entire country and deliver the speech on the State Of The Union. What i found disappointing was not only the heckling, but also their failure to even applauded stand up for things like Make It In America or for our veterans are for creating good paying jobs or paying teachers or applauding our health care workers. Things that, because i think there is so much partisanship on their front, they could not even managed to applaud things that everyone agrees with. Thats, i think, disappointing. And im afraid it signals a lack of willingness on the part of my republican colleagues to work with this president. Im hoping tonight was just theater, that theyre willing in fact to work to get things done for the American People. But it doesnt i think its concerning because they are reflecting a certain willingness to work with the president , which i think is unfortunate, because the American People need us to get things done to improve their lives. And the president has shown that he knows how to do that, he knows how to bring people together in a bipartisan way. But there was not a lot of evidence tonight the republicans are willing to do that. Well, as you say, legislation can not be performative and can actually be effective. Congressman cicilline, thank you for joining us this evening. My pleasure, thanks for having me. Up next, the blistering republican response to President Bidens address, delivered by arkansas governor Sarah Huckabee sanders. Shes accusing biden of stalking the socalled culture wars. Ever leave your clothes in the dryer and find a Wrinkled Mess . Try Downy Wrinkle guard Fabric Softener Wrinkle Guard Penetrates deep into fibers leaving clothes so soft, wrinkles dont want stick around. With Downy Wrinkle guard fabric sofner. I screwed up. Mhm. Well, i could switch us to xfinity. Those smiles. Thats why i do what i do. That and the paycheck. In the republican rebuttal to the president s state of the Union Address, arkansas governor sarah Sarah Huckabee sanders giving i blistering spots, accusing biden of failing to protect the nation, and engaging in the socalled culture wars. President biden is unwilling to defend our border, defend our skies, and defend our people. He is simply unfit to serve as commanderinchief. And while you reap the consequences of their failures, the Biden Administration seems more interested in woke a fantasies in the hard reality americans face every day. Most americans simply want to live their lives in freedom and peace. But we are under attack in a leftwing culture war we didnt start and never wanted to fight. Back with me, mark preston, even mckend, Bakari Sellers, and Kristen Soltis anderson. Bakari, let me start with you. The idea that it is biden who provoked the culture wars is interesting. How do you see . That thats a different reality. I just, you know, have to give props to governor Huckabee Sanders because shes done some Amazing Things since being governor of arkansas, like banning usage of the word latinx. Shes also examine the ap curriculum further woke ideology and indoctrination, so shes really tackling the issues of that affect the pocketbook of those in arkansas. I can sense your sarcasm. The sarcasm goes over better than it does on twitter, i can tell you that much. I dont think as a batter spawn speech. But like i said earlier, it was very weird. She used a lot of hot culture wars, a lot of these woke indoctrination. Just terms that ive asked her to define, thats why i dont get into debates with republicans about what is woke and critical race theory, because they cant define it, they dont know what it is. But she uses things, and as were talking off the air, i think mark is right. I think the right wing of the Republican Party is probably 20 eat up her speech. Although most americans will look at it and say she set a bunch of nothing. And it was decently. Weird can she paid biden to the left, given that a lot of his Speech Center on the american middle class, particular the economy, i mean, it wasnt a precise rebuttal, these never. Are shes incredibly successful of doing that, to the 88 of republicans or whatever that number is right now, thats for donald trump to be the next nominee. She was speaking to a segment of america that she was very specific about. And she was playing the culture wars to the base of the Republican Party. For Kevin Mccarthy, it was a smart thing to have her come and do it. It took away anything on capitol hill. He didnt have anybody who could come up and deliver the response after what he went through just a couple weeks ago. I think you successful in what she was doing. And lets not forget, were saying, wow shes pushing the, culture wars. Her father was a minister. She grew up this way. So, we should not be surprised that she would go to this bucket and use it this evening to try and look at her own political path, i think in the future. I think that is to 1600 pennsylvania avenue, at least thats what she thinks. Bear in mind who the audience is for Something Like this. The vast majority of americans who had their television on by the time her response were being given were probably watching the basketball that point. This is something the clips are going to get shown next day in conservative media. And you had former White House Press secretary dana perino saying this was the best state of the Union Response that i think ive seen. It is something that i think is going to make a lot of conservatives give her a second look. The contrast was interesting. She said im the youngest governor in the country, at 40. Contrasting that with biden, whos much older. Whats interesting, donald trump is also pretty old. And she talked a lot about the former president. But she never actually use the key word, which i thought was interesting. For me, it seemed off for the moment. But kristen is right, the part about generational, there needs to be a new generational leadership, that was arguably the most interesting part of the speech. But when she started, i thought, gosh, that didnt seem like a rebuttal to what ive heard. That seems totally someplace else. But ultimately, that speech, she gave it to who she needed to give it to. Its going to resonate probably with who she wanted to give it to. Bye thank also these Rebuttal Speeches are an opportunity for folks to introduce themselves to the country. A lot of folks already know her from her time at the white house. But if this is the first introduction to a wide swath of the electorate, im not really sure its the proper channel to have this, like, based cultural argument. There was this moment, i want to come back to, there was a moment he responded to, bakari, there was a discussion from President Biden where he spoke about a very big issue in terms of a cultural war that is beginning to brew. Its about roe v. Wade. Listen to this. Congress must restore the right that was taken away in roe v. Wade, and protect roe v. Wade. The Vice President and i are doing everything to protect access to Reproduction Health care, safeguard parents safety. But already more than a dozen states are enforcing extreme abortion bans. Make no mistake about it, if Congress Passes a national ban, i will veto it. Theres the cultural wars of course, that is the Hot Button Issue that came to be. What did you make of this moment . That was a strong moment for joe biden. I think and, this is the problem with Sarah Huckabee sanders speech, contrasting with joe biden. And he gaslight the Republicans A Little Bit tonight, i must admit. It was kind of interesting to see. But on the side of ensuring that we do not tear down Social Security, for example, on the side of making sure that people know that roe v. Wade is very nuanced for Many Americans. And a federal abortion ban is just a balloon that wont fly. And saying that he will veto it, you take that and you look at the box that Sarah Huckabee sanders and her speech was in, shows the republican Parties Problem of growth. Because i really think that i could close my eyes and Marjorie Taylor greene couldve given the speech thats their Huckabee Sanders gave tonight. What it has been as eloquent . Probably not. But the probably same points would have been hit. And thats the problem republicans have. They had in november, and theyre gonna have it in 2024. Because that blocks of wokeism and youre in doctoring your kids to run around and watched the proud family, that is not enough to win over the majority of americans, i dont. Think right, but in order to get the second race, which is a general election, you have to win the first race. And thats the problem. Which is the problem. You have to go through the first hurdle, which puts you behind. Especially if democrats run somebody like joe biden, who cant, by any stretch, joe biden is not woke. That is not what he is. Hes never been. Hes been up here 60 odd years. Hes never been woke. And he never will be. I tell, you he was energetic today. Everyone will think about that. And there were some lighter moments at the State Of The Union. Lawmakers starstruck by the presence of rock and roll royalty, well tell you it was, next. Theyre a lot of powerful people in the room as President Biden deliver his first state of the Union Address, but many of the lawmakers on both sides of the aisle were noticeably focused on someone else. The man youre looking at right now, onto. Bono. Maduro xu took photos of the u2 lead singer, who is invited as a guest of the first lady, for his activism fighting hiv a. I. D. S. And extreme poverty. I want to bring in cnns political analyst ron brownstein. I guess i got a little tongue tied looking at bono, i dont know, theres a moment there. Let me ask, your huge movie buff. Tell me, you must of been a little bit starstruck seeing him there. You know, i wrote a book a long time ago called the power and the glitter about the history and relationship between hollywood and politics. And going back all the way to the 19 twenties, there really has not been a celebrity who has been quite as effective over the years as bono. He was kind of renowned for being able to work with both republicans and democrats, both a relationship with the light jesse helms and i think he was there. You heard President Biden, as part of the Outreach Part of the speech, praised former president george w. Bush and his work on combatting hiv aids in africa. And that was something that bono was very involved in. I mean, with or without him, we cant live with or without him. See what i did there, it was a whole lyric. Anyway, [laughter] i want to move on to another part. Here i want to know how you thought the other be in the room, joe biden, was performing in his address. How do you think he handled himself tonight . Well, you know, biden was in the same position each of his four immediate predecessors have found themselves in. At one point during the presidency. All of them are elected, laura, with unified control of congress, both the house and the senate. At some point in the presidency, voters signaled their dissatisfaction of the way things were going by revoking that unified control and turning over one or both chambers to the other side. And you know, i have recently gone back and looked at the first State Of The Union. Each of his four predecessors, clinton, w. Bush, obama, trump, delivered after, i mediately after that. And they all involve a mix of conciliation and confrontation. I thought biden tonight was very effective. I mean, he started off talking about where the parties had worked together, and where they might be able to Work Together going forward. But as the speech went on, he lean more into what he would not negotiate with republicans. He would not negotiate to cut Social Security or medicare. He would not accept a nationwide ban on abortion. He would not accept a debt ceiling increase that imposes cuts as part of the price for getting that. And that reflected, i think, what we just put up on the screen, the increased confidence that he had relative to president obama, who suffered much bigger losses in the Midterm Election in his first term, and clearly felt that they had to send a stronger signal to voters that they were changing course. You did not get that from joe biden tonight. He did not give off the five of someone who felt that he had to kind of recalibrate and reposition himself to get ready for reelection. Instead, he felt very comfortable drawing clear lines of distinction with the Republican Party that is still operating in the shadow of trump, as all of those catcalls of from the audience, trumpian politics at least, as all those catcalls demonstrated. And he was quite comfortable in sparring. It was not as though he heard the different heckling from the crowd and became a little more, you know, shut down. He went right back at them and showed a level of energy. I wonder if that surprised you to see. I mean, this was in some respects, maybe dipping once toe into the reelection pond. Did he make a case at least for the notion that he was going to have that joie de vivre when it came to tackling and going against some members from across the aisle . Do you think they say joie de vivre in scranton . I cant spell it, but i can tell you, i can pronounce it, you know. This is a State Of The Union as no other. As other people said, this was something closer to the question our in the british parliament, where you had an interaction between the leader of the executive branch and the opposition party. And he did show a lot of energy. I thought it was really interesting the way the core of bidens speech really reflects his vision of how he wins another term. Although he did mention abortion well into the speech, he talked about lgbtq rights, by and large, he downplayed culture war issues and confrontations, as youre just talking about, and really placed his bet on convincing working families that he will improve their economic prospects. He talked again about his agenda as a blue collar blueprint to rebuild america. He emphasized how many jobs his program would create that would not require a college degree, something Clinton Obama would never have talked about. By contrast, you saw in the Sarah Huckabee sanders speech how invested republicans are in ginning up these demographic and cultural resentments and anxieties. That is the principal fuel that motivates their coalition, the sense that they are being displaced in a diversifying, secularizing, and urbanizing america. So in some ways, they are talking past each other. But its easy to imagine, whether its donald trump iran desantis, the eventual republican nominee trying to gin up among the base by hitting many of the same themes that she did tonight. And biden responding not so much in kind, but by trying to shift the focus towards his ability, through things like the bill, the infrastructure bill, the clean energy and inflation reduction act, to create more Economic Opportunity for people without a college degree. I felt like i was getting a fast forward to what we may see a year and a year and a half now. Well look, patience is a virtue. Will it be a Winning Campaign strategy . More time is needed.
