from afghanistan grows more chaotic, president biden is under pressure to extend the deadline for the u.s. exit. >> ultimately, it will be the president's decision how this proceeds, no one else's. >> reporter: biden is considering extending the august 31st deadline, but a taliban spokesman is pushing back, saying the u.s. must adhere to removing troops by august 31st. otherwise it will be a clear violation. biden spoke with british prime minister boris johnson today. and tomorrow he'll meet virtually with leaders of g7 nations who want that deadline extended. >> all i'm going to say is that the president continues to consult with the prime minister and our other allies on how this evacuation should proceed from here. and he'll ultimately make the determination. >> reporter: officials still haven't said exactly how many americans are left in afghanistan. >> i think i'm just going to leave it at several thousand right now, dave. >> reporter: national security adviser jake sullivan says he's confident about evacuating all of them by the end of the month.
