Investigators criticizes a parallel Justice Department probe. Why dont you have your own damn files . What interviews will we see this week . Ill speak to adam schiff in moments. First, look whos talking . Two former tennessee governors on opposite sides of the aisle say theyre ready to bridge the gap. Thats ahead. Hello, im jake tapper in washington, where the state of our union is watching International Crises build. One thing that was clear, as World Leaders garded, The Western World is fighting battles, on two fronts. With its forceful recap purse of its own land, and second against Global Economic peril, with inflation continuing to soar and recession looming, people Around The World struggling to keep up with Energy Prices and other costs. One leader facing a particularly stiff challenges is liz truss. She officially took on the role just days before the nations month narc,e 2k50id, after ten or 12 days of mourning, in trusss first major move as the nations leader, she announced massive tax cuts at a volume not seen since the 1970s, sending uk markets into a tailspin and crashing the pound to the lowest levels since 1985. Truss is facing perhaps the biggest set of challenges for any new uk Prime Minister since sir Winston Churchill. I had the rare opportunity to spend time with her at ten do you think downing street. Thank you for doing this. Great to be here. Reporter one of the Queen Elizabeths final acts was to invite you to become Prime Minister. You met with her just two days before she passed. What was that like . Well, i was hugely honored to be asked to form a government by her majesty, and it was a great experience. She gave me her wisdom which she had built up over the years. I was the 15th Prime Minister she had asked to form a government. To have that honor is immense. She has made such a contribution not just to life across britain, but across the world. Reporter before leaving Office Boris Johnson advised you to, quote, stay close to the americans, but you previously described the uk u. S. Relationship as special, but not exclusive. You didnt refer to the Special Relationship at all with your meeting with President Biden. Do you think the Special Relationship is not what it used to be . I think the u. S. Is an incredibly close partner of the uk. I do think our relationship is special. Its increasingly important at a time when were facing threats from russia, increased assertiveness from china. You know, we are both freedomloving democracies. We have such a strong connection. We also need to work with our other allies in the g7. We need to reach out to countries like india as well, baud we are facing increased threats from those autocratic regimes. Its very important. I had a great meeting with the president. We talk about many, many issues, but the core of it, the core of it is our belief in freedom, our belief in democracy, and thats what we need to continue to work on. We do face an increasingly insecure world. There are people in the Biden Administration who are concerned that you dont share the same belief of the Special Relationship that previous Prime Ministers have. It was Winston Churchill who came up with the term Special Relationship in 1946. First of all the, im penally a huge fan of the United States of america. Its a country where ive traveled often. Its a country we share many of the same values and core beliefs in. Im determined that we make the Special Relationship even more special over the coming year, and we work with our friends and allies Around The World. For too long after the cold war, the free world didnt do enough to take on the challenges of autocratic regimes. I believe we have now stepped up. I think or respur response to rs invasion on ukraine, and ive committed more Military Aid Put into ukraine. Of course, the Biden Administration has put huge amounts into ukraine. I really feel we are stepping up as an alliance to take on what is absolutely appalling war created by putin. So lets talk about that. At the u. N. , you called on western democracies to stay united against russias invasion of ukraine. Pewent is calling for 300,000 more reservists to come into ukraine and join the fight. He insists hes not bluffing when he talks about potentially using nuclear weapons. Some people believe hes threatening war with nato. Have you and President Biden discussed how the west would and should respond if putin escalates matters even further. First of all, the reason putin is doing this is because he isnt winning. He made a strategic mistake invading ukraine. I think he has outsmarted by the ukrainians. We have seen the ukrainians continue to push back against the russian offensive. I think he didnt anticipate the strength of reaction from the free world. We should not be listening to his Saber Rattles and his bogus threats. We need to continue to put pressure on russia and continue to support the ukrainians. If putin is allowed to succeed, this would send a terrible message to europe and, of course, huge threats to the ukrainian population themselves. It also would send a message to other authoritarian regimes Around The World that its somehow acceptable to invade a sovereign nation. This is why its so important that we continue to be resolute, we dont listen to the Sabre Rattling that were hearing from putin. Thats what im determined the United Kingdom will do. I know President Biden is absolutely committed from the u. S. Point of view. We work closely with our american allies, with the g7, and we will continue to do so until ukraine prevails. Lets talk about another authoritarian country, china. President biden said unequivocally, again, that the u. S. Would defend taiwan militarily if China Ininvestigates. Is the uk willing to make the same pledge . What we are very clear about and i was clear with President Biden is we support and work with our g7 allies, first, to reduce our strategic dependency on china, and also to make sure we are standing by our democratic allies Around The World. We are determined to work with our allies to make sure that taiwan is able to defend itself. When you say stand by, does that mean you would go as far as President Biden has gone, in saying that the u. S. Would defend taiwan militarily. Would the uk defend taiwan militarily, if China Ininvestigates . What i think about is that all of our allies need to make sure taiwan is able to defend itself. That is very, very important. We need to learn the lessons from ukraine. The fact is the free world didnt do enough to counter russian aggression early enough, and putin was emboldened to start this appalling war. We cant see that situation happen in other parts of the world. But the uk does work with its allies, whether its japan, another perfect ally with the United States, with canada to make sure we have a common response. Of course, i discussed that with President Biden. The Bank Of England just raised Interest Rates and said the uk may already be in a recession. Are they right . Thats a matter for the Bank Of England and for the gdp figures, the official figures. I think what is certainly true is the world is facing an economic shock. First of all, the aftermath of covid and secondly the russian invasion of ukraine, which has pushed up Energy Prices. What im determined to do as Prime Minister is make sure that we are doing all we can to grow our economy, all we can to attract business and investment into the uk, so that we have a Clear Pathway to becoming a higher great economy. Thats what im focused on. Your government revealed a new tax plan. You also proposed lifting the cap on bonuses for bank executives. In the u. S. , President Biden is taking a very different approach, and obviously he has a different view on economic measures such as the one you are proposing. He tweeted this week, quote im sick and tired of trick economic. Its never worked. Were building an economy from bottom up and middle out. So in essence, he thinks your plan didnt work. Well, i dont really accept the premise of the question at all. The u. S. Has one of the lowest levels of debt in the g7, but we have one of the highest level in taxes. Currently we have a 70year high in our tax breaks. What im determined to as Prime Minister and what the chancellor is determined to do is make sure we are incentivizing businesses to investment. Were also helping ordinary people with their taxes. Thats why they field its right to have National Insurance and Higher Corporation tax. That makes it harder for you to attract the investment we need. It will be harder to generate those news jobs, and i want the u. S. Economy to be successful as well. I want the european economy to be as successful as well. I want freedomloving democracies to succeed. One of the things were doing is moving forward on our infrastructure programs, road building, broadband, mobile telephones. I know that is what the administration in the u. S. Is doing as well, but of course we all need to decide what the tax rates in our own country, but my view is we absolutely need to be incentivizing growth. At war is a difficult time for the economy, and we have put in place a package of measures to support consumers with Energy Prices, to make sure nobody is having to pay 2,500 pouchbds on their bills, which is very impo important. Even at that price, there are still families struggling to get by. What we have done is made sure no family, no household is having to pay more than 2,500 pounds on those energy bills. Were also providing more help to the most vulnerable families. Were also, as well as dealing with the real shortterm issue we face this winter and next winter, making sure we invest in the uks energy supply. Thats one of the things were in discussing with the u. S. About, how to collaborate more closely on energy supply. We dont want the United Kingdom to be dependent on authoritarian governments. As well as building more of our domestic supply, more nuclear, more renewables, working in areas like hydrogen. We can never be in a position again to be so dependent, and surge regimes like russia. Stay right there. Well have more of my exclusive interview with liz truss. Does former President Trumps handling of Classified Information make her nervous at all . I asked her, and thats next. Li. Ok, so what exactly does it mean for you . Out of pocket costs for drugs will be capped. For seniors, insulin will be just 35. Families will save 2,400 on health care premiums. Energy costs, down an average of 1,800 a year for families. And its paid for by making the biggest corporations pay what they owe. Our closest ally in the world, President Biden used that exact phrase when he met with uk Prime Minister liz truss last week, but also the two leaders are facing a big disagreement. One of your biggest disagreements appears to be with the Northern Ireland issue. Youre threatening to rewrite the trade agreement, which was designed to keep the peace. One quote was its like putting a loaded gun on the table. What compromises railroad willing to make . President biden and i both agree that what is vital is to protect the belfast good friday agreement. Were celebrating 25 years of that next week. The nationalist community in Northern Ireland, as well as the Unionist Community in Northern Ireland. What i want to do is find a way forward, and my preference is a negotiated solution with the eu that protects that north south relationship, with you also protects the east wii relationship. That is core to the bell pass good friday agreement. Its interesting, because im wondering what your reaction was when you saw the census figure that showed that cath lights catholics outnumber the prot protestants. That was one of the arguments for there being a Northern Ireland, at the time there were more protestants . The fundamental point here, and this is whats capsulated in the agreement, is that both communities in Northern Ireland need to be respected, both the Unionist Community and the nationalist community. Thats what i want to achieve through the changes we are making on the Northern Ireland protocol. Thats what we need to achieve into the long term. Are you concerned at all about all of the movements you New York City that Queen Elizabeth has passed, to remove countries that dont want to be part of the commonwealth anymore, countries in africa . There seems to be a possibility that youre going to preside over the lost of many in the commonwealth. What we have seen is a huge amount of love and affection for the her majesty, and we had a huge amount of State Leaders Cup for the state funeral. We also seen huge warmth toward king charles iii. Im very, very supportive of the commonwealth. I think its been a hugely important organization, the commonwealth believes in freedom and democracy, which are important principles that we were discussing earlier in this interview. Of course, its a decision for any country on how they decide to organize themselves. King charles has been very clear about that himself. He was clear about that at the Commonwealth Summit earlier this year, but i think the commonwealth is a force for good, its a belief in freedom and democracy, and we need more of that in a world where we are facing these authoritarian regimes who want to subvert those ideas. The uk regularly shares your most sensitive classified intelligence with the United States. I wonder what you make of the way that donald trump has handled that Classified Information, and also his recent declaration that a president can declassify anything he wants just by thinking about it, that its automatically declassified and he can do whatever he wants with the documents. We dont know whats in the documents, but it could be Sensitive Information that the uk provided, for all we know. We talked earlier about the Special Relationship and how important it is, and we do work closely together in areas like intelligence, in areas like defense, in areas like energy. I will not be getting involved in internal discussions of u. S. Politics. Certainly been would be concerned about any country with whom you share intelligence not treating it respectfully . As i said, this is a matter for the u. S. Authorities. Last month, when asked if french president macron was a Friend Otr Foe to the uk, you said the jury is out. Macron said the jury is not out for him. For us, theres no question, b brexit, not brexit, we are allies. Y you met this week. Friend ofoe . We have a good meeting this week. Again we are talked about the values we share. For example, tackling illegal migration, standing up to russia, backing the ukrainians and working together on energy. It was a very good meeting with president macron. Im looking forward to working with him in the future. The world just witnessed the grandeur and spectacle of the queens funeral. Most of the cost of the funeral was not paid for by the crown or royal family, which has han estimated net worth of 28 billion, but by the british public. How much do these ceremonies cost your taxpayers . And is it fair to ask struggling britons to pay for this . Well, i dont have an answer to your question about the cost, but this was a very important event for the you nighted kingdom. Her majesty, the queen, gave a lifetime of service to our country, 70 years, 15 Prime Ministers, wisdom and advice that didnt just help britain and move us forward to the modern age were now in, but was also widely respected Around The World. The funeral was a very impressive and respectful event. I think thats entirely appropriate for somebody who made a huge contribution to our country and to the modern world. I know you have to go, but i just want to note theres been a lot of turnover, obviously in the monarchy, obviously in the Prime Ministers office. Your cabinet is changing, but i do want to note that, if you can confirm it, that its not going to be entirely turned over, because at number ten, youre keeping larry the cat as the chief mouser. Is that correct . That is true. Larrys position is assured. And hes doing a great job, though he does spend a lot of time asleep, which you might have notified when you came in. Thank you, jake. Thank you. One member is lashing out at the Justice Department. Why hes so upset and what to expect from the committees new hearing this week. Energy costs, down an average of 1,800 a year for families. And its paid for by making the biggest corporations pay what they owe. President bidens bill doesnt fix everything, but it will save your family money. It would be equally breathtaking if we were to say the Justice Department, turn over all your files. My first reaction was, why dont you have your own damn files . Why havent you been constructing your own investigation . Welcome back to state of the union. Clear and cutting criticism there from the byen Justice Department. He cause merrick garlands approach to investigating very slow. Joining us adam schiff the california. Mr. Chairman, you really put the Justice Department on blast off the hasnt and there are signs its ramping up. What more do you want gail and the doj to be doing that theyre not doing, apparently . I hope its not too little too late, but it has been very slow in my view. Were more than a year and a half in the from the january 6th events, but there still seems to be areas that the Justice Department hasnt been investigated. They knew donald trump was on the phone with the secretary of state of georgia, demanding they find votes that dont exist, and had that information for a long time. I dont think that should be left to the fulling County District attorney alone. Maybe theyre pursuing it very diligently and very quietly, but also they may have been very tenuous in not feeling the sense of urgency that many of us do about pursuing just. This will certainly by in crass with the members of the january 6th committee, the vice chair liz cheney said, she said she thinking that the entire committee will unanimously make a referral or decide not to, and then separately, she told me that she thinking its clear that donald trump did break the law. Do you think ultimately there will be a unanimous criminal re referral by the committee . We operate with a high degree of consensus and unanimity. It would be my feeling that we should may referrals, but we will get to a decision as a committee, and we will all abide by that decision, and i will join my Committee Members if they feel differently. I do agree, as judge carter in california wrote in multiple opinions, there have been several laws broken and i think its apparent that theres evidence that donald trump was involved in breaking several of those laws. I think when congress does find evidence that people have broken a law, it is not always a kay that that makes a referral, but in circumstance like this, i think thats the better part of the argument. Also that the committee has obtained 800,000 secret Service Communications from the period surrounding january 6th. Shy subjected they case that not every secret Service Agent that has testified has told the truth. Do the message back up the story that Cassidy Hutchinson said that she was told there was a violent confrontation between President Trump and the secret Service Detail in the president ial vehicle . I foul her enormously credible and courageous as a witness. I have yet to see anything that has dissueded me from that view. I remain very confident of her testimony, what she said, and, yes, i do have questions about the testimony of others and whether they showed the same candor. We are still going through the records, because they are voluminous. I will say theyre not a substitute for having the text message that were apparently erased from those devices. We are still investigating how that came about and why that came about. I hope and believe the Justice Department on that issue is also looking at whether laws were broken in the discretion of that evidence. We do have a mountain of information that we need to go through, but i think its fair to say it wont be a complete substitute for some of the most important evidence, which would have been the information on those phones. I do want to get your reaction to something donald trump said this week. Take a listen. It doesnt to be a process as i understand it. If youre the president of the United States, you can declassified just by say its declassified, even by thinking about it. Is that how it works, sir . No, thats not how it works. Those comments dont demonstrate of much intelligence of any skinned. If you could simply declassify by thinking about it, then frankly if thats correcthood view, hes even more dangerous than we may have thought. He could spout out on anything 2349 from the day le brief. No, people work hard to get that information. People put that you are lives at risk for that information. That information protects american lives. For him to treat it so cavalierly showed both what a continuing danger the man is, but also how very little regard he has for anything but himself. Take a listen to what former adviser to the january 6th Committee Denver Riggleman told 60 minutes. You get a real ahay moment when the white house switchboard connected to a rioters phone. Someone within the white house was calling a rioters . Absolutely. Partial it was a land line from the white house to a Phone Registered to a rioter. Do you see this call as significant to your investigation . I cant comment on the particulars. I can say that each of the issues that mr. Riggleman raised during the period when he was with the committee, which ended some time ago, we looked into. One of thing thats given our Committee Credibility is weve been very careful what we saw, not to overstate or understate matters. You know, i think it poses real risk to be suggesting things. We have looked into all of these issues. Some of the information we have found of various issues well be presenting for the first time in the hearing coming up. It will be the until mix of information in the Public Domain and new information woven together to still the story about one key thyme mattic element of the effort to overthrow an election. How much new information will we see wednesday . And what will the focus of the hearing be . You know, were not disclosing yet what the focus will be. I can say that, as this may be the last hearing of this nature, that is one thats focused on the factual record. I think it will be potential more sweeping than some of the other hearings, but too will be very thematic, it will tell a story about a key elements of Donald Trumps plot to overturn the election. The public will see things it hasnt seen before, but also understand information it already has in a different light. I think, as the others, will be a hearing worth watching, and i hope additionally down the road well have a hearing with our findings and Going Forward to protect the country. Adam schiff, thank you for your time today, sir. We appreciate it. Tune in wednesday at 12 00 noon eastern for full coverage of the next hearing. Up next, issues shaping the midterm election. It will release your fat and it will release you. You might no longer have much hope that things can improve, but my next two guests are trying something radical trying to change the conversation, and sometimes your political opponent might have a point. Joining me are the hosts every the new podcasts you might be right. Governor haslem, let me start with you. One of the challenges is so many in the party all continue to push trumps dangerous election lies, and in the views of many critics dont seem to have much in democracy what do you say to people who say you cant find Common Ground with people who are literally trying to undermine democracy. I would say this, one of the reasons we started these conversations is both of us served as mayors, governors, in business before, and whats been lost is we have real problems in a need to be fixed. Most americans are not out there wondering about or engaging in an argument this way or another. Theyre living their lives, but they do want to understand it before. We want to show both sides of the problem, and understand that the other side might have a point. I get that, but do you see my point its difficult to have a conversation about tax policy, abortion rights, or social issues, if the other side wont even accept the results of a free and Fair Election . Well, if were going to get stuck on that particular issue, i dont think were going to make any progress. What bill and i are trying to do is say, look, theres issues that are very difficult, and people are in hard corners, but theres a lot of issues in this country to do with the debt, the environments and so on, that are real problems that solution. Trying to explore with the public at large, not necessarily with the congress, but the public at large as to what some of those Common Ground might be is important. The other thing i think is important, what i found, looking at both sides, you get to a better answer. If you stick to the catechism of either party is difficult. You solve by picking and choosing from different Points Of View to get a decision. I know your faith ha important to you, and why people have been sometimes take a meanspirited posture. You say the presence of christian flags showed how far offtrack the church has gone. What role to see evangelicals i playing in the extremism, and also the potential solutions that you and governor premisen talk about. One of the things, you know, if you read the sermon on the mount, the clear message is be different. Mime experience in office wasw wassing Believers Act like everyone else, instead of being different. One of the reasons you serve in offices like we did, so solve a problem, to make a difference. Its not making a point, but making a difference. Im trying to encourage people of faith to say make a difference, which means actually trying to solve a problem, instead of just yelling at the other side about how horrible they are. I was going to say, you know, just focusing on the backgrounds that both of us have i think helps people to understand that point, that, i mean, we both were in the Business World before politics, we both were mayors, then governors. Those are all jobs where you have to do something monday monday. If theres a problem youre expected to do something to begin to solve it. Its just a different environment than in congress, for example, where theres a lot of posturing going on and working to the base. I hope that the combination of experiences that the two of us brings something to the discussion as well. Let me ask you, because you both have talked about how the world views of so Many Americans are so dramatically different. You called it a cultural canyon between the socalled cultural elite and folks who knows somebody who drives a ford f150. What is the root of the divide . Are we living in two different americas right now . I think were living in an america which is obviously divided although my perception is its not as divided as you would think by listening to the congress or listening to the media. If i walk into the Grocery Store and see people, im sure on both sides a lot of these issues, theyre largely the same people with the same desires in life, same, you know, intentions as to what they do. I think of it more as an urban rural divide than anything else. You know, that may be inevitable given the way this country has moved to in separating that way, in moving away from more rural lifestyles. More people move to the cities. But, you know, i think its possible to bring it back together again. We were very divided in the 0s and world war ii fixed that. Im not suggesting we need another war or something, but there will be some challenge that comes up that will pull us back together and find our common roots. Governor haslem, the Republican Party go ahead, what were you going to say . The truth is, were pretty evenly divided as a country, the senate is 5050, we havent had a president elected by a double digit margin in the last 12 elections. But we have become segregated by our beliefs so we think everybody thinks the way we do. Part of what were doing with this podcast is modeling former senator howard baker saying always remember the other person might be right. And thats what is lost in the discussions were having today, this idea of, the goal is to get to the right answer, not to get to my answer. So were trying to take hard topics, present people that have two very different perspectives, and present some potential solutions. All right. The podcast, you might be right.
