tv in nashville filed this report yesterday on the ongoing rescue efforts. >> the sound of helicopters and sirens surrounding homes in waiverly while first responders worked to get people out of their homes to safety. humphreys county sheriff says he woke up this morning to a thunderstorm and that's when things took a turn. >> it hit hard and fast. notorious for waverly, this area, not just waverly, but the county has been impacted. >> rushing water. cars and trees and homes destroyed. it's just a sliver of the day people in waverly had. for chris rawlings, today started when he heard people screaming outside. >> i stepped on the last step. i stepped into maybe two feet of water. i didn't know -- i was like somehow knew god would get us through this. >> reporter: he has seen firsthand what it's like for his neighbors to lose everything in a day. >> there were people here, they wouldn't sit in the lower level no more and helicopters were lifting them out.
