Twitter is planning job cuts that could be announced as soon as this week. The social firm could terminate about 8 of its workforce or 300 people. Thats the same percentage it cut last year when cofounder took over as chief. The news comes amidquestions about whats next for twitter. I think an activist could make a difference there with respect to being on board. You have done a lot with your career. Maybe its time for that. Twitter also announcing it will change the release time of its Third Quarter results to before the market opens on thursday. It was scheduled to report after the bell. Twitter says it wants to avoid conflicting with earnings announcements by other companies on the same day. The big story of the week a trt and t buying time warner for 85 billion. Netflix ceo sharing his thoughts on the deal. Heres what he said. Its hard to tell. Its very early. We didnt know anything about it so were just sorting through it. For sure we want to make it so we want to require that for at t customers that hbo and netflix are treated the same. Now that they are going to own hbo, e we think special treatment would be inappropriate. But i think thats pretty basic. Besides a few concerns, he says hes not bothered by the deal as long as they are treated the same by regulators. Hastings was asked if he also might consider going after time warner himself to which he responded, quote, next question. And then later clarified that was not a no. Hastings says the reason netflix has been successful is because it stayed out of the space and the company does not do bigger meetings. His stock up almost 100 told since the firm went public 14 years ago. The reason it was key to watch what hes saying is because of this convergence of technologi s technologies. We were trying to analyze the logic in the deal. This idea of content and distribution. Something that netflix has done organically and how its going to change the landscape with google and Facebook Trading at record highs yesterday and time warner itself trading lower on worries a about the deal and about the Regulatory Environment. Definitely a big question having seen a similar type of deal take over in the past. Interesting must read later from steve case. Drawing parallels back to time warner, aol, that botched deal of the century offering specific anecdotes and advice thats in the wall street journal today and ill cover it later. Theres a point about the culture being so crucial. Can you integrate the two when theres such different backgrounds. More to come including apple set to post Quarterly Results after the bell. Well bring you three things to watch in those numbers. Stay tuned. Youre watching Worldwide Exchange on cnbc. Welcome back. Lets get you up to speed on the market action. Nice gains for the tech sector. The tech sector led the way up over 1 . The nasdaq led the way up 1 . Were continuing those gains this morning as you can see up. 29 . It comes off the back of gains in european trade as well. Lets have a look at oil prices this morning, which had slipped just below 50 recently. We are back above 50. 86 up. Creditors will approved a bailout loan after the country completed its new round of economic reforms. That loan consists of two parts. One for debt servicing and the other for clearing overdue payments. This marks the end of the first review of greeces more than 93 billion bailout, which was approved last summer after fears that the country would default. And eventually leave the eu. It hasnt even made the front pages or moved the markets. Back to the u. S. , charlie evan expects the central bank to raise rates three times by the end of next year. Speaking to reporters yesterday, as long as Inflation Expectations in the job market continued to improve, we should see at least one rate hike this year. Two next year. His forecast in line with the consensus of other fed members at their most recent meeting. Evans says the most important thing is for the fed to be more explicit about what conditions would prompt further rate hikes. I think investors might agree with that. Back to corporate news, a ton of Earnings Report. Apple will dominate the conversation. We are joined with what to watch when they report after the bell today. Good morning, will. The market is expecting the Third Straight quarter of declines for iphone sales at around 45 million iphones, down from 48 million a year ago. This would be the first decline for apple. Were also expecting a drop for apple down 15 . But it is worth remembering the iphone 67 has only been on sale for a couple weeks during this quarter. We might not see the full potential reflected and that may mean an optic in it that next quarter for iphone 7 sales. Other areas investors are watching include where apple is seeing weakness down about 33 in the last quarter because of tough e competition from local players. Investors are going to be quite keen to see what kind of strength Apple Software and Services Division is going to see given this has been flagged as a future area of growth for the company. Youll get specific commentary on whether they are gaining from the samsung issues or not. The market is expecting to see apple gain somewhere between 2 to 5 of market share from the samsung note 7 debacle. The iphone 7 plus is direct competitor to the note 7 given the screen size. That could mean we see android people jumping over to ios, which would be a huge boost for apple. What have you learned in your reporting about the event where apple is set to unveil new macs . Were looking at a new mac book pro that has a new touch screen on the keyboard. Its thinner, got a sharper resolution, its been a a Long Time Coming this refresh after four years. Apple is hoping this is going to reverse some of those declines its seen in the division of its earnings. We have seen the overall pc market declining quite rapidly. So apple is trying to stop some of those gains and its going to be up to the macbook pros to do that. Its a game of expectation when is it comes to apples stock Price Performance and what it can deliver. How high is the bar going sbo this one . I think what we have seen from previous earning reports is apple has had lofty expectations. But this time around, there was some barrishness when the iphone 7 came out. I think the expectations have been lowered for this Earnings Report given that. So we might actually see perhaps an optic in the share price given that investors arent expecting too much here and especially that we have seen some strong noise from the likes of u. S. Carriers saying that the demand has been strong. Apple itself said preorders sold out. There could be a surprise here for the market. Thank you very much for the color. Our tech reporter out of london this morning. No one likes the pink one. I go for rose gold. You can get it first because no one else want it is. And because its pink. Now, taking a look forward, both candidates, as we mentioned, are going to be in florida today. But interestingly, talk briefly mentioning but not really talking a lot about obamacare, even after the administration said those premiums are going up against next year on average 25 . Its been a big issue for republicans. He put out a press release, but barely mentioned it at his event last night. I was checking the unemployment rate. 4. 7 , a little lower than the national average. They have had good jobs growth. In september they added the most jobs in the country after california and texas. Give us the state of play in the races that we should watch. How is rubio doing and what are the latest polls in the election on this state . Its going to be tough for rubio. One of the things clinton is doing is trying to boost democrats running against some of these republican who is have a lot of name recognition or who are incumbents. Lets get straight to the action in Global Markets. First up, u. S. Futures are higher around. 02 . Nast dak higher by 13 points. Led by tech given the action were seeing in the Broader Media industry at the moment. Particularly over 1 of gains for the tech sector. Worst performing sector so far this week is telecommunications. We have seen at t shares under pressure as a result of this deal. They are yield sensitive. When yields go up on the tenure, they sell off because they have been heavy dividend payers. Tidying it up for us. I just wanted to add to it. Lets have a look around the rest of the world. Europe is higher fn the german dax. It slipped a fraction. That comes after the german Business Sentiment surprised to the upside following yesterdays flash manufacturing pmi which hit a 33month high. So some rebound there and Business Sentiment over the last couple days. Asian trade was a little more mixed. We had the nikkei doing well in the eyes of a softer yen. But elsewhere shanghai pretty much flt. Oil prices, back on the rise. Its cut its gains in the last half hour. Still up half a percent. Brent, 51. 61. And we watch brent and wti ahead of the government Inventory Data that comes out tonight and tomorrow. Api tonight, the Government Data tomorrow. The yield, we sit around the mid170s level around 176 or so on the tenure yield. Theres some selling of treasuries with yields popping a bit. We saw it. Well see how it reacts to the data. The dollar has been tracking yields. And as those yields tick up, so does the dollar. Its right in the middle there. Thats really where were seeing multimonth highs. As for the euro, a bit firmer this morning, but Still Holding near low levels at 1. 0886. The pound is negative all the 1. 2233. As for gold. It was gain iing a little bit ts morning. Lets see if it maintained gains in the wake of Dollar Strength. Up half a percent or 6. Getting a little nervous. Whats this rolled up for. Its like youre about to hit me with it. Continuing todays agenda full of earnings and a a pair of economic reports on the consumer several reporting results this morning. Cat er perpillar, dupont, p g a united technologies. Well hear from eli lilly and General Motors after the close and apple is the big one later after the bell. On the economic front, the monthly s p home price index is out at 9 00 a. M. Eastern followed by october Consumer Confidence at 10 00 a. M. And atlanta fed press dennis lockeheart this afternoon. Lets focus on apple after the bell. Analysts expect them to report earnings of 1 ppt. 65 a share. They are it looking for apple to ship 48 million in the latest quarter. So commentary will be key. Investors want to know if the iphone 7 and iphone 8 are yet to be released can turn around the trend. Initial reports of iphone 7 sales have been encouraging. The stock is up. Thats the difference. Yes, expectations for the numbers of shipments might be easier to beat, but the share price a little more behind it. Thats on color out of sprint and t mobile and iphone saying it sold out of certain colors and models. It did not give those numbers unlike it had previously in terms of the relows and came at the same time. We wonder if it there was an impact. Were going to stay on the earnings theme. Visa reported 28 increase in profits. Higher payments and the acquisition of visa europe helped results. Trading was choppily after the bell. Visas Revenue Growth outlook came in light of estimates and the ceo said he would be stepping down in december. He did address that transition on the Earnings Call last night. Listen. Im so proud to have been associated with visa, its clients, partners and employees. I hope you feel that this is a Different Company than four years ago and that the things we have done to position the company well for the future. There were two other notable comments on the call. Visa did get a boost from costcos decision to choose visa over a. Max. Brex it u is expected to weigh on the cross border payment volumes. Just looking at the stock here. Visa has gained about 5 . 6 in six months. It has been an outperformer over the last year and year to date. You mentioned apple. Another dough component into earnings today. Up 20 over the last three months. So youre right, it really has taken off here. It would be harder to get a big bounce in stock price. The big media tell come story, at t buying time warner. He sat down with our julia yesterday at the wall street journal conference. Hes not bothered by the deal as long as hbo and netflix are treated the same. The reason netflix has been successful is because its stayed away. Do you think theres something going on in terms of Technology Companies interests in media assets . If there were interest youd have to take a deal . I dont really see a lot of that happening. You can never know. We have been public for 14 years. Our stock is up almost 100 fold in that 14 years. So we have done pretty well for shareholders and were pretty invested in trying to keep that going. Shares are pretty much flat. They have had a big bounce recently after earnings last week or two weeks ago. Time flies. Two weeks ago i think. But look at the chart. Thats all you need to say. The head line in the ft is outlines the plan to take on netflix in digital video talking about the strategic rational for this deal. So well continue to wait for the regulators. Thats the next step. Its a big step. Time warner shares trading in the high 80s. That sort of tells you theres skepticism. Thats the focus in the shortterm. Longterm, bigger questions as to whether they can make the integration work. Twitter planning job cuts that could be announced as soon as this week. The social firm could terminate about 8 of its workforce. Thats about 300 people. Its the same percentage that twitter cut last year when cofounder jack dorsey took over as chief. That news comes amidquestions about whether is next for this company. Bill miller was on the Halftime Report yesterday. He thinks that the company is ripe for an activist. Listen. I do. I think an activist, somebody like carl icon could make a difference with respect to being on the board. You have done a lot in your career. Maybe its time for that. No, not me. Twitter announce iing it wil change the release time of results to before the market opens this thursday. Originally it was scheduled to report after the bell. Twitter wants to avoid conflicting earnings with other internet companies. Thursday is a heavy day after the bell. Im not sure whether to read into that one too much. Theres so much deal speculation around twitter. It popped on friday amidrumors. Nothing specific. It sort of held gains. Its a long way off to when everybody and their mother was interested. All those reports and then it was all shot down. I like that line. Jack dorsey in vegas last night, talking about square. President obama appeared on jimmy kimmel last night and participated in an addition of mean tweets where celebrities or the president in this case read some of the nastiest things said about them on twitter. But its his response to a tweet from a certain president ial candidate thats getting the most laugh on social media. President obama will go down as perhaps the worst president in the history of the United States well, at least i will go down as a president. Hes the master of late night. Hes done jimmy kimmel three times. You can tell its a drop the mike kind of moment. He has good comebacks. Thats the only clip i have seen. They all look great. Its funny when celebrities do that. We should read mean tweets. More about like youre too obsessed to the yen. Bring it back to the dollar. I dont get any comments about my hair. Which is slightly upsets. Jayz will get involved in the race for the white house. Hes head lining a concert for Hillary Clinton. According to a clinton aid. The event is expected to draw thousands. Its part of an effort to motivate young people to turn out for Hillary Clinton. We also saw katy perry go to George Mason College knocking door to door trying to get kids to vote. She has the celebrity had hollywood crowd. This is important. Again, we talked about this before. Will it galvanize support and turn people out . Well have to wait and see. Was that a jayz song . Yeah. Classic. It sounded soft. Girl scout fans, listen up. Soon youll be able to indulge in your favorite guilty pleasure. Cereals will be available in january and come in two flavors. Thin mints and caramel crunch. I have absolutely no aspect of that story. Heres what you need to know. Thin mints and samoas are two girl scout cookies. Girl scouts sell them to people. Those are the most popular. I wonder how the cereal. Its a lot to make it into cereal. Still lost. You havent e explained it well. Another american tradition. Ill start with the nfl. Todays mustread stories. The huge time warner bringing some memories back for former chairman steve casen. He has tips for the two firms and hot off the presses oped this morning. Well talk about it in our mustread stories. Youre watching Worldwide Exchange on cnbc. Before a bunch of dreamers looked up to the sky and said, why not . And Collaboration Tools from intel made Rocket Science simple for actual rocket scientists. And the launch crew met for a moment of reflection. Before any of this, cdw orchestrated a collaboration solution using pcs with intel 6th gen core vpro processors. Collaboration by intel. Orchestration by cdw. Time for todays must read. Sticking out to us this morning. Interesting phrase. What do we usually say . I dont know, but not that. The former aol ceo writing what the merger can learn from the aoltime warner merger and he would know from firsthand experience as a former ceo of aol during the time. He says that theres a lot of parallels, but he describes some anecdotes that may be helpful for this new combination if it ever gets to that point if the regulators let it. Heres an example. The move that stands out to me was the 2002 decision to kill Voice Services for aols instant messenger. That was long before skype and facetime emerged. The fear was that the software would compete with time warner cables triple play bundle, which included phone service. He gives this one an example that culture really matters. Its not just a word that everyone has to be on the same page in terms of being forward looking. That if aol were allowed to do certain things without being worried top brass about canni l cannibalizing other business. S, it would have pushed forward and possibly wouldnt have turned into such a debacle. The interesting thing about that is do you let things cannibalizemargins. Timing is important. The cable part was right because they got at least another decade of massive margins in that bottom business. Is the timing now much better for this deal . Probably time to make that change. He says the company has to fully integrate and it has to be one team. You cant have the two former factions fighting each other. Its a great read. It is a great read. I would also plug recoat as well. Shes been out trying to draw parallels and differences to that deal and this deal. Its a large one that you really are reminded of it. So the blending of the technologies between content and distribution. Its not exactly the same thing, but trying to imagine what the ceos of at t is thinking there. My mustread is wall street journal, a piece written by wilbur ross and peter navarro. Its called a vote for trump is a vote for growth. The point of this article is to offset what have been unfair, unbalanced assessments of the two economic platforms of both of the candidates and criticism that trump may have received for his policies just being to increase the deficit and that sort of thing. They try to push back against that saying that their Economic Analysis suggests that trumps policy is the best one. However, its a a good attempt, but it falls apart on one line because in oir dynamic scoring, we found the positive revenue offsets for increased growth. Lower energy costs and elimination of trade deficit. A rapid acceleration of growth leads to significant reduction of debt burden relative to gdp. I think thats the problem it comes back to. Its too easy to say the other part of our platform is well boost growth and offset the tax cuts help to balance the budget. Thats where it falls apart. That argument. Just saying were going to boost growth and that will pay for the cuts has Less Foundation to it. 5 or 6 growth. I wonder how realistic that is. Youre not hearing the clinton team talk about boosting growth from deregulations and so this argument the trump camp wins. Thats why the frustrations inside the Trump Campaign is hes not talking about it as much. Were approaching the top of the hour. That means the team is kweting ready for squawk box. Its not foundationalist. People that believe that the reagan revelation occurred because of the Growth Initiatives fully do believe that that does work. And whether its baseless or not built on any foundation depends on really whether you are a believer in supply side growth policies or whether youre not. To say one side or the other is wrong is kind of silly. But we have ken langone today. Im not going to call it a dumpster fire, but people stop and watch crazy stuff thats going on. Ken is outspoken. He will never pull pack on any of his punches. Hell tell you exactly what e he thinks. I fwarn tee you he thinks Dynamic Growth can occur from supply side economics. He is still a a young fellow. He built the company thats now worth got to be over 100 billion. In his lifetime. Who believed that you can build something with every single thing a man could ever use in terms of home improvement. I go there for lightbulbs. I cant find them usually. I dont know which ones i need. Im overwhelmed by that. But people that know what they are doing in terms of being handy love home depot. We have cfos of procter gamble. A company that sara knows so well. When you go home from the city, you would see the Proctor Gamble towers. Absolutely. I was headed to the other side to pete rose country over Western Hills and price hill and sort of the no mans land. The down to earth people live. There are Railroad Tracks right before i get there too. There are some Railroad Tracks i cross to the other side. You miss the skyline completely. Yeah, i miss the dolly parton skyline. And gm, cfo from gm. And before i toss it back to you, you saw the game. You saw the nfl game. Now you can see all you got to do instead of a round ball, make it a little oblong so you can pass it instead of just trying to throw it. And then when you can use your hands to catch it, the game actually becomes interesting. Theres scoring that occurs. Theres hitting. Its a whole different ball game than just watching people basically with their hands tied back their back trying to kick something. They never succeed. Now you know it can work. We have rugby which is also a great game. But football is an excellent game. So is soccer. But the nfl is outstanding too. We can have them all, joe. You did enjoy it though . We have football in this city too. I have been trying for ages to get me to take you ta game. So i went to miami. You wanted to bring your camera and youre 66. People are going to go look at him. They dont know youre 66. Get your stilts. It will be fine. So insecure, joe. Well see you at the top of the hour. About 15 points for the dow. Joining us from philadelphia is bill stone, chief investment strategist. Good morning to you. Thank you for joining us. Does this talk really boost the market . Is that justified . Ill call it a tail wind. Certainly at least seeing that other companies are interested in acquiring other ones i think its the juices flowing. You can say it helps the Financial Sector because of the e fees that will likely go on with this. Dont you have to pair that with the Regulatory Environment and whether the ceos who argue theres no competition and shouldnt be an antiof trust concern or politicians who have come out and spoken already against it two weeks ahead of an election. Dont you have to weigh that as a negative against those animal spirits that are getting the deals going . I guess you could say that. This morning even the dow dupont merger might be delayed a bit. Its a different Regulatory Environment than necessarily we saw a few years ago. But i think its pretty consistent that its been a little tougher in terms of the merger side of the equation. Certainly since the Obama Administration started. Im not sure its changed a whole lot in that respect. But its certainly part of the backdrop that the companies have to consider when they look to merge. We havent got long left. Sum up your view so far and what your preferences are on a sector perspective. I think earnings have been really good. I think were likely to snap our string of head line declines and earnings. I would argue it was a bit it wasnt fiction, but because of the earnings and energy being so bad, people said that we were in earn educatiings recession. Technology, apple tonight, its probably the biggest attracter from technology. Thank you so much for joining us. Bill stone. Apple after the bell. Squawk box is next. For the. Gilman go get it, marcus. Go get it. Coach gilman used his cash rewards credit card from bank of america to earn 1 cash back everywhere, every time. At places like the batting cages. [ crowd cheers ] 2 back at Grocery Stores and now at wholesale clubs. And 3 back on gas. Which helped him give his players something extra. The cash rewards credit card from bank of america. More cash back for the things you buy most. Good morning, earnings season hitting a fever pitch. We will kick things off with dupont. Netflix ceo sounding off on the at t time warner deal.
