There was one week of Economic Data of note. Investors will get the first chance to react to that today. We had Fourth Quarter gdp figures, on friday, the markets were closed. Q4 gdp increased 1. 4 . Strong Consumer Spending was a key factor. But weak corporate profits was the low point which a lot of people were focused on. Down a little more than 7 if you take out special factors which is still one of the worst reads for corporate profits since the great recession. Can they bounce back in the First Quarter. New fed speak to tell you about. San francisco fed president John Williams says the u. S. Economy in his words is doing quite well. He points to stabilization. Strong employment growth. Williams suggesting that Global Development actually preventing the u. S. From returning to normalized Interest Rates. Have a listen. We understand that were in the Global Economy. Global financial system, so what happens in brazil or china, what happens in Southeast Asia or south america has major impact on the u. S. Economy in terms of employment and inflation goals. We have to take all of that into account. We have to understand how it impacts the u. S. Economy. We have to be cognizant of the fact when the fed acts, it affects the Global Economy. Understand those feedback loops and all the ramifications. And that was John Williams talking about the feds increasing focus on international development. Something we saw in the fed statement during the fed meeting two weeks ago. Something we did thought hear with the fed regional president s coming out, some of them talking about april being a possibility sooner rather than later which spent the dollar stronger. I would just say Pay Attention to the core of the fed. Williams echoes more the janet yellen views of the fed. Shell be speaking on tuesday at the Economic Club in new york. Bill dudley, the new york president will be speaking on thursday. Those are the ones you want to monitor because they matter. Interestingly, it comes down now to the confusing fed speak weve had over the last couple of weeks as to how much weight they put on the situation. Everyone sort of agreed the situation in the u. S. Is pretty decent. The data has been okay. The situation internationally is pretty soft and its how much weight do they want to put on the international situation. Those that focus domestically, theyre more hawkish and saying hike earlier. And the one with total volatility say lets push it back. And it opens the fed to criticism because the Federal Reserve has a dual mandate that is to focus on inflation, well see how the gauge is today. With, the fed gauge. And 34r0i789. 4. 9 on the unemployment rate. Its come down lowest since the recession. So you could argue that the fed is meeting its mansd date, should be raidsing its Interest Rates. Though with manufacturing on the brink of or in a recession, and the stronger dollar hurting corporate profits should the fed wait even longer. And its such an important factor to watch if you think of the rebounds markets since the middle of february. The latter part of that march part, really down, the u. S. Dollar. Allowing trades, some risk trades to come up. Commodities. Commodities as well. Lets check in on asian markets, europe is closed. Some markets in asia trading. Shanghai is up. 7. Japan up. 07. A new survey finds economists are seeing the glass half empty when it comes to corporate profits and Economic Growth this year. Landon dowdy joins us more with that stove. Hi, thats right. A nur survey for the nationality association of business economists say corporate profits have raised 2 in 2016, thats gown from the 5 growth frost in december. Despite the california money in consumers pockets from lower gas prices, economists are lowering their growth average to 2016 and 2017. The Federal Reserve predicting a typical u. S. Lets look at u. S. Equity futures this morning. Pointing to a hirer open. And now looking at 80 points to snap the losses that we saw last week. Of course, last week, we had the first week of losses in six, albeit by relatively low amounts and on low volumes but pointing to a positive today. One of the big themes in this market is the debate continuing whether oil prices have finally seen the bottom. Jackie deangelis looks at the issues facing the energy secretarier in this secretary quarter. A bumpy First Quarter for crude oil prices as we saw crude dipping to that 26 level for a second time and then rebounding up over 40. Right now, there seems there be downward bias despite the fact that producers are going to meet in kata to discuss that production increase, despite of the fact that weve had a global glut here in the United States. And meantime that meeting while it seems to be a good effort on some of the parties to get together, will it produce any results here . Thats the question. And where do prices go in the Second Quarter . Based on my reporting, consensus thinks that we could see summer driving demand give us a little boost for oil prices. Some support. But the fed and dollar going to drive this trade and create headwinds for commodities, including troo crude. Dennis hartman telling me hes expecting to see a range, plus or minus 5, and he expects that to continue for a good portion of the year unless something happens to change the fundamentals. Either way, most Market Participants are telling me they expect to be more cautious when it comes to this market and that it could continue to be a bumpy right ahead. Back to you. Jackie deangelis, our thanks to you. Joining us now to discuss is curt howlet. Clearly as jackie points out a big event will be this meeting of oil producers. How important is it going to be in terms of moving the price ahead of it into that april meeting and after. Good morning. Yeah, i think anytime it has an opportunity for the saudis to give their perspective on the oil market, its a very important market. Just as important, the fact that having russia involved. Those are two of the three Largest Oil Producing Countries in the world right now. And i actually think the actual pivot point for marking a low on oil came in early february when the saudis did agree to the Production Cut or not the Production Cut, the production freeze. And to have this meeting with nonopec producers as well. Kurt, when we look at the way the oil prices have recover the reason is for the bounce as you might have suggested in february, the last few weeks, this resilience that weve seen, how much is down to currency as opposed to the supply factors that you point to to the likes of russia and saudi come to the table and make a deal . I think thats what makes the market very fascinating. There are multiple factors always involved in say, daytoday trading and factors involved over time. I think the most important factor is always going to be supply and demand. Clearly, you do have an excess supply situation in the marketplace. Thats not to downplay the potential currency impacts. I think the currency impacts ultimately will be determined to be less important than these flying demands. Kurt, here we are, once again on a monday morning, hovering around the 40 a barrel region. How important is that level . Is that just a technical thing . Or does it really become important for producers as well . And oil companies, when it comes to managing their costs . I think the important thing right now is that youve seen some improvement in the price of oil. And then youve seen some stability in and around this 40 wpi mark. Beyond that, i dont think its really that important. I think the next level is the 50 per barrel level. Thats a point where a number of u. S. Producers have indicated that a number of their fields in the u. S. Will be proven to be more economical. And it might be a point where you might start to see additional hedging as well. Kurt, is the u. S. Stock market still at the mercy of the price of oil, or have we moved past that point . Well, it seems 200 coincidental to ignore, doesnt it, february 11th . It marked the rise of oil prices in tandem. I think ultimately, its a chicken and egg process. With strong Economic Growth, you have Strong Demand for crude oil and vice versa. As long as were in economic mode, its positive for the markets. A lot of people say stronger oil. Weaker oil, strong dollar. Kurt hallead. Still to come on Worldwide Exchange, decision 2016. Meanwhile, the republicans are gearing up for a town hall tomorrow. Nbcs tracie potts joins us live from washington. Hi, wilfred, sara. Good morning, everyone. We are watching wisconsin very closely as the next contest for both sides. Theyve got twice as many delegates to award democrats as republicans. But theres a reason why it could turn out to be an even bigger prize for the republicans. Reporter donald trump, ted cruz and john kasich answerer voters questions at a town hall in milwaukee tomorrow. Theyre vying for 42 delegates in wisconsin next week. Its winner take all. Like cruz, kasich is now backing off his pledge to support donald trump if trump wince the nomination. Were going to look at it every single day and well see what happens. Weve got a long way to go. I dont want to project that hes going to be the nominee. Reporter trump and cruz are still trading personal attacks. The latest with this tabloid story accusing cruz of extramarital affairs. This story is garbage. Its tabloid smear and it came from donald trump and its henchmen. For him to try and say that i had to do it is disgraceful. Bernie sanders is off the campaign trail after winning washington state, hawaii and alaska last weekend. Pressed on whether hed support Hillary Clinton as nominee. Its too early to talk about that. Right now, we have a lot of momentum. Reporter hes pushing to win the majority of wisconsins 96 democratic delegates answer wants to debate clinton in her home state, new york. Now in wisconsin tightening on average the recent polls, Hillary Clinton only has about a twopoint lead and so does donald trump. Tracie when we look at those democrat results over the weekend, should Hillary Clinton be worried . The margin for some of those victories for sanders was significant . Reporter they were, 70 , 80 , but they were expected. You didnt expect Hillary Clinton to be fighting for those states spending a lot of time in alaska or hawaii states. Those were states that they pretty much thought were going to go to Bernie Sanders. Wisconsin is going to be one that theyll fight for. Obviously, new york coming up two weeks after that but when you look at the delegate camp, she still has that significant lead. Tracie potts from washington this morning. We lost a little steam. S p by 9 points, nasdaq up. By 21 points. Markets in europe are closed for Easter Monday holiday. In asia, weve got quite a bit of trade. Shanghai is down. 7. Nikkei up by about 8 . Markets in hong kong and australia all closed. We did lose since the back end of the last week dropping below 40. Bouncing back on the wti, 39. 9 at the moment. A lot has to do with the u. S. Dollar, not so much as the euro as sterling. What to make of the Dollar Strength which has taken center stage again in Global Markets joining us is the chief Market Strategist at worldwide markets. Joe, good to see. You good morning. This Dollar Strength that has started to assert say over the last week what does it have to do with, the fed confusion . Its not mostly, its all the fed. Its certainly having its wonderful effect on the equities. You get a dovish fomc. And three or four weeks later, less. The fed turns around and starts to try to talk up the dollar. They may actually raise rates in april. Its not the fed. Its members of the fed. Thats true. Thats what so sort of ridiculous about it, and the one week after janet yellen youre absolutely correct. The equities have taken this to heart. They like what the fed did for the fmoc and theyre not taking anything else from what the fed is doing right now. But the currency markets they dont know what to do. This would be the normal path for the dollar to get stronger. Weve seen it against the yen. Weve got seen it much against the euro which you would expect since the ecb is doing something which is expected to be effective, whereas what the boj has done is not effective. When do you think the next hike is . I think its probably in june at the earliest. The fed has been following the market, rather than leading the market. The fed when they use the dow projections that everybody tox about. They say this is not a projection theres no way for the market to take it any other way, when they reduce their dots, it sounds silly to be talking about it when they reduce their dots from four to two, the market then makes an assumption that is this a projection of what theyre going to do. So there isnt any way to follow it when, as sara said, two weeks later three weeks later, Economic Data says something else. I think the fed is confused although theyre certainly not going to admit to it, and the markets are getting that. This week, we got a heavy load of data. Maybe last week was fed speak. We do have jobs on friday, manufacturing this week. Heavy numbers. So is the data going to matter for the markets and the dollar more than that fed speak which is all over the place . Well, the feds other great ones were data dependent. This is kind of a cliche. The data that would and should have driven the fed to a rate hike has come through. Except for wages. Theyve gotten what they wanted as far as a year ago or two years ago. So are we waiting on wages now . Is that the data point weve moved to now. Have we moved away from jobs. Have we moved away from inflation. I dont really know. I dont think the fed knows this. I will say, you will get some reaction from the market, especially as you get improvement in income. The last remaining piece for the fed that they can give any credence to, except for foreign interest is wages. So if weve got a good personal income number, i would say yes. What about earnings season, its not imminent but were getting closer. Is that crucial for equities for the last couple of weeks, are they waiting for some catalyst and might earnings be there . Earnings of course is very important for equity. But, again, they trapped between what the earnings might show. The earnings that came out in the gdp number on friday were not very good, they were not making anybody happy. The market didnt crash on it. Didnt do anything. So even if the earnings prove not to be as hopeful as people expect, you still have whats the fed going to do. If the fed is going to remain for whatever reason, lets say we dont have any reasons. For whatever reason if the fed is going to remain accommodative then the markets are going to like that. Even if you get a poor earnings, im not sure youll get a selloff. So, are you positive on the markets . On the equities, yes. Zblantsd feds on hold . And feds on hold. But that is a change from what they were before. Its a more accommodative stance than before. For that i think the dollar gets stronger. So the dollar can get stronger but stocks, too . I think they can, yes. And theyre sort of paying attention to is this not the normal type of market reaction. We are not in a normal market. Joe, thank you for joining us. In Corporate News, microsoft is reportedly in preliminary talks with private equity firms to help finance a bid to buy yahoo this according to reports of executives for microsoft to gauge its interests. Equity futures this morning. Were pointing to a here e high. Back to todays must readings and the stories catching our attention. To the washington post. Its entitled could the urge to vote against trump help bridge clintons Enthusiasm Gap . Could trump drive people to the polls to vote against him. Those extra 1. 4 million virginians who may yawn at the thought of clinton, hispanic, black and unemployed and all the rest of the trump offended work up enough enthusiasm against trump to turn the state blue . He says, for instance, virginia, which he uses as a prime example here is a red state when theres low voter turnout. Its a blue state when theres a lot of enthusiasm as in the last few president ial elections to pick president obama. He said clinton is missing that enthusiasm that could turn swing states like virginia and ohio for the democrats. But he knows that trump, the enthusiasm is in the nevertrump camp. And theres a lot of enthusiasm against him as well as for him. But if those voters who dont want trump come out and actually turn the swing states for her, that could help. And a point, the turnout is usually higher for female voters than male voters and while clinton perhaps doesnt galvanize all womens support like some thought she might four or five years ago, trump is clearly the opposite effect as well. And the other question is, trump is garnering so much enthusiasm that is he going to court Bernie Sanders fans, for instance, other blue collar democrats that get side about him him that arent exciting about clinton. Right, my picks in the financial times. Gabby davis, someone who i respect highly. He questions the Global Economy snapping back into gear. He asked that question, he says, just when it all seemed very bleak, the Global Economy has shown some signs of a rebound in recent weeks. The improved data significantly reduce recession risks in the near term. Other development markets he likes the looks of. He agrees it must be kept in context. He said the brighter economy has been the u. S. With that position in gdp, its all relative. But a few green sheets to hold on to. I wonder how much has to do with the fed trade. And that is when the fed came out a few weeks ago and said were not in any rush to raise Interest Rates. That was the interpretation by the market. You saw the stocks and currency giving much needed relief to those kinds of asset which is has made the world look like a better place but if the fed starts talking about raising rates again that could reverse. That could change in fed speak. Its good. Its a positive one. Right, still to come, will they or wont they, and how many times will the fed hike this year . Thats the ongoing debate. The next guest says there are plenty of reasons for the fed to wait. Youre watching Worldwide Exchange on cnbc. Were back in a couple of minutes. Futures pointing to a higher start. Dow futures up more than 70 points at this hour. S p more than 8. We are approaching the top of the hour, that means the team at squawk box is getting set. Becky quick joins us. Hey, sara, great to see you. Thats right, we are looking at stock, of course, were coming off the threeday weekend. So people are ready to get back to business here in the United States. Plus, guys, im sure were you watching over the weekend with some of the politics and what played out. Ben white is going to be joining us in the next 20 minutes to talk about the american political scene. A lot coming up in nine nine minutes time. Still to come on Worldwide Exchange, lots more discussion on markets. Weve got chad morgan joining us cofounder of washington advisers. Chad, good morning to you. Good morning. Of course, we snapped that fiveweek rally in u. S. Equities. Small declines, though. One of the other takeaways for me. The last two or three weeks, very low volumes. Markets are in a bit of a lull. Theyre lacking direction which is going to be the next meaningful move up or down . I think were going to continue to grind higher in the short run, the policy was quite meaningful, as well as the ecb, as well as china pledged to stabilize their currency, and perhaps, we have no evidence of this, the fiscal response from china. The global concern was the destabilization of global growth. Were still witnessing that. We dont think the economy is going to go into a recession, nor do we think in 2016 the u. S. Economy is going into a recession. So globalization is in line for the time being. What are you buying . So, were buying Consumer Staples at this point. Also i would say highyield bonds. And on the less downshift or downdraft, within the overall system, we were accumulating emerging markets for the first time. Which markets in particular . I think this year, clearly the dollar can affect all of them. But theres a lot of individual countries doing worse than others. Brazil say great example at the moment. Is this broad em etf purchasing . I would go with broad em etf purchasing.
