Lloyds plans to cut 9,000 jobs over the next thee years as part of a strategic overhall. The uk lender posted a rise in q3 profits. But the bill for missold insurance picked up another 900 Million Pounds. Lloyds sounded confident it would pay a dividend. Shares down 8 in todays trade. And litigation expenses take a toll on ubs. Its Investment Bank posted a pretax loss despite higher revenue for equities trading. Carolin roth asked sergio whether volatility was impacting the bank. From extreme changes in volatility, like the one we saw on the treasury a few weeks ago. I think, of course, raising questions. But overall, i didnt see active kind of level of volatility, people being more conservative or more, you know, concerned than they have been in the previous quarters. It wasnt just the banks that are in focus. Bp post ago sharp drop in Third Quarter profits. But the oil major still hiked its dividend. Russian sanctions have had no impact on the company so far, but flagged concerns with the lower ruble. Sanofi is another one in focus. Its trading near the bottom of the stoxx 600 after it posted weaker than expected sales in the Third Quarter. The french drugmaker warned that price pressures for its diabetes franchise would continue into 2015. Sticking with pharma, the drugmaker novartis has reported a 4 annual increase in sales to 14. 7 billion, this despite competition from generic Blood Pressure pill diovan. So mixed pressure is so far this day. But markets moving higher right now. A lot of green on the heat map there. Lets have a look at the individual markets. In general in the green today, partly because of some of the earns seema has been mentioning, but because yesterday was a weak day for european markets. Yesterday kicked off strongly after the ecb stress tests, but sold off on weak german ifo confidence data. Bouncing back a bit today, as you can see. Italy, strong, almost 2 in the green. France is up 0. 6 . Germany, 1. 3 in the green and the ftse 100 is up 0. 5 . What does that mean, seema, as we look ahead to u. S. Trade . Well, yesterday was a mixed day of trade for u. S. Markets, wilfred. The s p 500 is now less than 3 away from its intraday high of 2019. So it has recovered a lot over the last four trading days. The dow jones utility average hitting an alltime high. One of the sectors that is benefiting from the drop of the price in oil, take a look at the dow futures, trading sharply higher in premarket trade. Also higher in premarket. Nasdaq in focus today. Facebook reported quarterly earnings. That, of course, will be in focus for tech traders, wilfred. Thanks, seema. Joining us now from the local Institute Summit in london is david, chief Market Strategist at jeffries. David, good to see you this morning. I suppose the first thing to focus on first of all is that big volatility we had a few weeks ago and the bounceback we had last week. What is the main factor driving that . Is it the fear that the market has that the will be taken away from it . Definitely, i think, you know, a lot of people have talked about various geopolitical events or whats going on in ebola. Weve tried to stress that this is a Monetary Policy communication issue. Were coming to the end of the greatest Monetary Policy experiment in history and were going to have to unwind it. And that, too, is going to be a Pretty Amazing experiment, as well. So i think its just going to be confusion around communication thats going to get the markets very, very rattled. And youre not going to understand exactly what particularly the fed is saying. Theyre going to talk dovishly about labor markets, but theyre going to be talking about rate rises throughout 2015 and thats going to be a difficult thing for the markets to digest especially after five years of this unbelievably accommodative Monetary Policy. I can see that you can put more weight on that particular factor than geopolitics or ebola or even greece as you mentioned both just now and in your notes. But surely, the other big factor is germany and European Growth and particularly the belief over the last couple of weeks that there isnt so much that Monetary Policy can do in europe whereas it can do stuff in the u. S. Still. Yeah, look, i think ecb policy and whats happening in germany have been very important. Youve got divergences in Central Bank Policies for the first time. All the Central Banks during this post cry sits period were largely moving in the same direction. The ecb did stop accommodating and allow the Balance Sheet to contract after 2012. But its really a much sharper divergence now than its ever been with the ecb discussing much more additions of the Balance Sheet. You have that and you have the bank of japan. This week were going to have the fed, the bank of japan, and next week we get the ecb. Its large three to five Business Days or seven to ten Business Days here in central banking. Even today, you have the swedish surprise everybody and go down to fixed rates. That is why you have more green on your screen this morning. Theres some thought here that that may be a precursor to more aggressive easing from the europeans other others around the world that are in a state like the German Economy is. A big week for Central Banks, aus just pointed out, david. But we also get u. S. Gdp data on thursday. What are you expecting . If you are bullish on the u. S. Economy and u. S. Growth, could one be putting more into cyclical sectors Like Technology . We still are quite bullish on the outlook for growth. The gods on eft truth is its been growth at about 2 . We had a rough First Quarter then we had an amazing second quarter. But if you go back and look at the last year, we grew at 3 . The year before that, we grew at 2 . The year about that, we grew at 2 . Its been happening for about two years or more since the crisis began. I think its not the 3 that everybody was hoping for, but its good enough to get us across the rub conand its good enough for the fed to start thinking about slowly removing the accommodation. That said, the slower removal of accommodation is going to be a difficult thing in a market that is accustom to having this extra benefit for quite a long time. So i think, again, my biggest risk is not a u. S. Growth slowdown and its not even a European Growth slowdown. Its a miscommunication in pol Monetary Policy. That, i think, is going to keep markets volatile like they were in the last six weeks or so. David, the history has shown us the process of normalizing Interest Rates many times leads to a high level of miscommunication, investors misinterpreting what the fed is trying to say. Do you think that will happen this time around . I absolutely do. Look, i dont have a monopoly on the idea that the end of the taper and a change in Monetary Policy accommodation is going to create volatility. I think thats a pretty well known fact. But i was surprised at how the market came into september with the vix trading at 12 in the middle of the month and stocks at record highs. It struck me that after being up about 10 for the year and the s p and the nasdaq, it might not be an unreasonable thing to take a few chips off the table and think about a more volatility period as we get into the last meetings of the fed that were going to indicate were done tapering and were on to the next form of policy which is a steady as you go policy until we remove accommodation. Its a new phase. Its something were not really used to. I think its reasonable to expect a lot of volatility around that. Thats it. I was surprised that the market didnt price that a little more aggressively. But, you know, we had a very aggressive move lower in volatility all year, so maybe complacenty is something that has a lot of correlation in it. Absolutely. The fomc meeting does kick off today. Well leave it there, david zervos, chief Market Strategist at jeffries. Thank you very much. Just want to bring you some updates from italy. Morale among italian manufacturers has risen unexpectedly strongly in october. Its the first four months of straight declines. The Manufacturing Business indicator has come in at 96. 0 from 95. 5 in september. Expectation was for 94. 9. So above expectations, the composite business came in at 89. 3 versus 86. 9 last month. The ftse mib would bounce back has moved to session highs following that data. 1. 5 in the green. Twitters Third Quarter werings met analyst expectations, but the stock still fell sharply in after hours trade. The social media giant issued disappointing guidance and reported a 7 slide in user engagement. They played down fears over engagement growth. Joining us on set now, the uk Business Editor helia raheemmy, lets start with lloyds. They say they want to be a low cost, low risk bank in the future. Weve had this cost cutting program. Hes said thats deliver profits. Its made them low risk, made them return to profit. Remember, the taxpayer in the uk still ends a quarter of lloyds bank. The question from today is what is the plan for uks biggest mortgage provider for the next three years . He was outlining this morning he needs to trim down the branches, he committed to keeping branches ahead of other risers that may be closing those branchs faster. But its a massive cut. But the real finger today in lloyds numbers comes from the ppi provision. Because what we were expecting was a provision in the region of around 450 Million Pounds. What we got was 900 Million Pounds more added to the cost of ppi. And lloyds really has been hit hard by this. The total now is 11. 3 billion pounds. I think he is feeling the pressure. It was relatively conservative in its loan book. What it had for the last year is regulatory pressures, massive issues in terms of board governs a financial director that stepped down. Youve soon top line growth in Standard Chartered by 1 . But what people are worried about are these regulatory costs. Definitely not a good day for the two banks. Lloyd bank down about 2. 4 . Compared to the volatility earlier this month, which was largely driven by central bank uncertainty. Steven caught up with gugenheim partners and asked whether now is the time to buy. Some of our clients we have been buying in. I think when markets have a trend, the only way you can stop the trend if its going to continue for a while is to have a violent correction. So when people say they want corrections, theyre not usually looking for one so violent. Would do you think is bhien this renewed volatility . You know, weve been in a goldgy locks scenario. As long as there are signs of growth n united states, swlonks there are signs of the Banking System holding up in europe, as long as there are signs china is not having a hard landing, but without there being too much growth in any area, that sort of goldie locks scenario had liquidity flowing into the markets. More recently, theres been questions about whether europe is going to hold together and whether china is going to have a hard landing. That brought about, i think, the correction. Sanofi is trading near the bottom of the stoxx 600 after posting weaker than expected sales for the Third Quarter. Stephane joins us on set to look at some of these. Ste fap, good morning to you. The speculation about a possible speculation. It all started with reports from a newspaper this week. The chairman of sanofi started to take some to replace his and guess what . That is no compatible with the view of the people on the board. That will explain why the focus i think the worst oneday performance since 2009. This, of course, following a flat day yesterday and a strong week last week. Weve had some good earnings and thats suggesting markets will open into positive territory. Germany is up 1. 3 . Cac who up 0. The and the ftse mib up 11. 6 . Social media will be in focus today, wilfred. Thanks to Third Quarter werings after the bell today. So far this year, the social media sight has seen the stock climb about 48 , as you can see right here. The company did warn on its last conference call, not to expect the same wall street earnings expected to grow 55 year over year. Reported earnings after the bell on thursday, its outlook for the Fourth Quarter is kiss appoi appointing investors. That weight on the stock after hours. In terms of twitter growth, twitter did see its active monthly users grow by 13 million. We believe that the interest that is measured by what people are coming to twitter to consume and the kinds of things theyre engaging with give a very specific view of what that user is interested in and thats a highly targeting and advertiser friendly view. We like the way thats growing. We like the trajectory its been growing on and we love the engagement rates were getting with our app. Joining us now, thank so much for joining us. One figure that caught me by surprise was a decline for twitter, a timeline view for monthly active Users Falling from 793 the to 774 in the united states. Is that worrisome to you, given that that is a key engagement v . No, its not. I think the decline is as a result of the product changes theyve made over the past year. I dont think investors are really focused on that. I think the decline is really 10 in ennings. And i was somewhat disappointed. You had the ferguson, you had the iphone 6 activation. He was expecting a larger number. They called out a few of the numbers in the quarter in asia. But overall, i think it was an incline print. Youve seen a high multiple in stock. What youre seeing is profit taking following overall with inline prints. And as you say, its a High Net Worth stock. Last week, it was slightly in line and expectations high for twitter. Does that mean its sosa acceptable as sharp moves downward . Yeah. Theres a high multiple of stocks supported by high growth. I want to point that out. When you have really high multiple stocks, you have to deliver high expectations. I think the cautious commentary led to the pullback. Their multi action user may shake out over the Fourth Quarter. Thats what weve seen. Do you think twitter should follow the lead of facebook, perhaps making an acquisition in the messaging or a video app sharing space in order to accumulate more users . I think theyre going to be making more activists down the line. Facebook is just a better capitalized company. But i do expect it to make small acquisitions. Of course, with facebook reporting later today, were expecting a pretty big increase in q3 profits year on year. Is that right . I do. You know, i think the number to watch is really the advertising Revenue Growth. If the number comes in above 60 , above 65 , i think the stock will hold. Facebook has had a massive run so far this year. Its traded at alltime highs. So i think for the stock to rally, they have to deliver advertising Revenue Growth in excess of 65 . Thats what ive been looking for. The profits, you know, im expecting 40 cents a share. I think they beat that number. Its really just the advertising Revenue Growth, i think, investors will be focused on post earnings. Victor, stick with us. Weve been asking our viewers a question today on costs. Lets have a look at european markets and the italian markets in the lead today up 2 . We had italian Business Confidence data which posted gains for the fist time in four months, came in at 96. 0 against expectations of 94. 9. Helping italian market higher. As you can see, weve got strength across the board today in europe and thats a bounceback from yesterday. The markets were weighed on because of the german Business Confident data. Despite a positive start today because of the ecb stress tests. But its today bouncing back, germany in particular, 1. 57 degrees. The ftse 100 up 0. 5 . What are we expecting in the u. S. . European stocks sharply higher. Thats feeding into the u. S. Were looking at futures in the u. S. Higher across the board. We have u. S. Gdp on thursday and, of course, fomc meeting kicking off today. That, of course, will be in focus for investors. How do you make money in these markets . Here is what some of the experts have been telling us this morning. Were seeing a bounce in the oil price. A couple of days, trading days back at the end of last week. It seems to me thats reasonable. I think there are longterm question marks about the supply demands dynamic on the board. Commodity currencies, we think, are quite strong. The market relatively underweighted them. At the moment, they still offer yields. So the quality prices on the australian dollar, ka nidan dollar, we think all three of these currencies outperform the euro. I think were in this phase where a growth stock will start to perform better than the general market in here. And thats consistent with a low inflation environment in growth in here. So technology stocks, health care stocks, are two of the areas that were emphasizing in here. The oil is and gas giant bp raised its to 10 cents a share. Bp is trading up about 0. 25 so far today. And joining us now to discuss it further is tom bergen from reuters. Tom, i suppose with all the headwinds its facing, sanctions on russia and fines around the gulf, this is quite a nice, positive beat. Absolutely. You know, raising the dividend today, thats a sign of confidence. The dividend, of course, is hard to cut. With that, bp is obviously saying that its a slight future. We should also remember its increased to 10 cents or 13 cents before the horizon exploded. Thats just part of the journey that bp is on. How is the valuation . Its down about 15 over the last six months and, of course, with those head winds its had, without the dividend will the shares fall much further . Well, you know, the dividend is very important. The dividend is very important. In the wake of the deepwater horizon, a lot of people got out of the stock. So what the yield is and, of course, you have to think about Oil Companies produce cash. Thats the main reason people go into them. Theyre not likely speaking earlier about linked in, these are not perceived to be growth stocks, particularly when their production is shrinking, not to mention the oil price is shrinking. And lets talk about russia. Bp does have a 20 stake in rosneft. Thats come under examination due to sanctions on moscow. In one sense, weve already seen the contributions to the bottom line evaporate. I think it was about 110 in the last quarter. Bp says its not due to the sanctions, it started depreciation of the ruble. It doesnt flatter the bottom line. Of course, were going to look forward. What other kind of impacts might happen if bp gets a dividend out of rosneft . Rosneft has said theyre committed to that dividend. Rosneft is having difficulty raising cash thats been affected by sanctions. So there are concerns with the dividend, the actual cash flow that bp receives from russia might not be what it was in the past going forward. Lets talk about the oil spill want are those numbers set in stone or is there a long way to go . Absolutely, there can be a very long way to go. Exxon litigated for 20 years. Were about four years into this. This could go on for a long period of time. Bp has said that the 20 billion that it set aside, thats pretty much all burnt odd. Not spent, but accounted for. What that means is going forward, there are unexpected charges. They will go trade into p l. There is a potential if twhe do see a continued rise is unexpected charges, that could weigh on bps earnings. And the drop in oil seems to be a concern for investors. Some saying it could dip below 75 a barrel. What does that mean for bp . We had the golden note this week. 200 potentially a few years back. Other analysts think the syndrome may not be so much. But its not a Good Environment for the industry as a whole. Is oil heavier than some, its going to be more infected than maybe shell, for example. Thank you very much for joaning us, tom bergin at reuters. Lets give you a rundown on what to watch this trading day. It is a busy day for earnings in the u. S. Durable goods are out at 8 00 a. M. Eastern time. At 10 00 a. M. , well get october Consumer Confidence numbers. On the earnings front, well hear from dupont, coach, facebook, Electronic Arts and panera bread. Investors will keep an eye on the feds twoday meeting kicking off today. What can traders expect ahead of the Central Banks decision . As we go into the last set of meetings from the fed, it indicates that theyre done tapering and were on to the next form of policy, which is a steady as she goes policy nl until you remove accommodation. And its a new phase. Its something were not really used to. I think its reasonable to expect a lot of volatility around that. Lets have a quick look at european markets before we leave you there in the green p a across the board today, bouncing back with a down day, today were bouncing back from that and italy is leading the charge because it had its own Business Confidence data which beat expectations. Yeah, a strong move in european equities. If you take a look at u. S. Futures, theyre strongly higher. In premarket trade, a lot of data coming out today as well as Consumer Confidence. That will be interesting to watch given the price of oil. Consumers are now spending more, they are more money in their wallet baht because gas doesnt cost as much. Thanks for watching.
