Some stocks hit hard yesterday bouncing back this morning apple, amazon, netflix and invidia. Apple is helping to ush about the dow to an intra day record high lets bring in our global vins tore wall pter price. Good morning so a couple things make me nervous. We have had multiquarter runs on a lot of these stocks, an he will up more than 50 percent offer 12 months. Not a binary choice, but what do you do with it here if you have it already do you add to it or sit tight . Were sitting tight right now. Although the stock is town about down about 6 port st. Lucie t6 s i think the earnings will be better than expected. About down 6 the last few days. I think the earnings will be better than expected and with an he will you haapples waiting for the new iphone so earnings wont be exciting until they announce that new phone in september do you have an opinion about what is going to be a catalyst in the back half of the year, not just for apple, but tech stocks in general . How much of an impact is excitement or disappointment over the iphone going to have, how much of an influence is currently going to have . Because that was a drag at times for tech stocks. I think for apple stock to keep going, they need to have a successful product launch. Were excited about the new iphone conceptually, but until we see the product, i think its hard to push the stock up significantly from these levels. You know, if they introduce the phone that everybody wants to buy and its a hire price point, i think that you could make a case for apples earnings going up significantly over the next couple years but for a tthe next couple quarters, you will have toed b your time and count on the company to introduce great product. B of a has their monthly fund manager survey expensive, 57 in a bubble, 18. Fairly priced, 25. Where are you . Were more on the fairly priced area. Facebook, its mobile has come down a lot in the last couple years. Although the stock has gone up a lot, being earninearnings have o more they had Earnings Growth over 50 last year and we think the Earnings Growth are this year will be somewhere in the 20 to 50 range. So still a pretty reasonable stock for the earn aings growth. Google is more of a 20 times Earnings Company so we dont think those two stocks are expensive at all. Amazon of course is expensive, but earnings are growing really fast so that is the expensive one but we still like it any reason to worry about the Corporate Governance of some of these companies . Yes, there is always a pileon when things start selling off and not working. But with the rise of tech and the dominance you think to the snap ipo or there were no voting shares, Mark Zuckerberg still controls more than 60 of facebook, the journal raised this in one of the longer term worries about technology but is that a question for you as one of the investors . Items sures surely a questin we would prefer to have voting stock for sure and equal votes for shareholders but share are holders vote with their feet and these companies arent immune from the pressures of lower stock prices and so, you know, if the stock starts to go down and then they cant attract employees, employees are the life are blood of these companies so i think that they areholder s and shareholder sentiment. And so despite the fact that you dont have a vote, the fact that their stock is either going up or going down has a lot of influence on management. Investor ron baron shared an opinion on where tesla is headed might be a surprise to hear this one begin where its been so far. Take a listen. In the case of tesla, i have this long term view, i think 15 years well make a huge amount of money, 30 times our money, 20 times our money. They think that they will have a rate of 5,000 cars a week by the end of this year and 10,000 cars a week by the end of next year and they will sell a million cars in 2020 Rob Sanderson mkm joining us now. By phone rob, you heard the sound just now about tesla possibly going up 10 x is that overly optimistic or are some of us perhaps just not getting how big this revolution in electric cars and in Artificial Intelligence might be okay im not hearing Rob Sanderson. Walter price, over to you. So that same issue, you say that you feel like the market is fairly valued, but if you listen to sound like that from ron baron, he thinks there is tremendous up side in even highly speculative stocks like tesla. What is your take . Well, were torn on tesla frankly. We really like the products. Were enthusiastic about the model 3. We want the company to show that they can make money. And i think its hard for us to see the stock going up by 50 let alone 30 times if this company doesnt show that it can make money and have positive cash flow. So i think that is almost more important than having exciting products i think making some money on the existing products is really important and thats what drives stock prices in our view other the long term. A big part of Morgan Stanleys call yesterday, walter, in which jonas argues that a path to profitability in 12 months could send the stock m far a far higher if you agree, how much higher . I mean this is a company if they do what they are talking about and what ron baron is talking about and make 10,000 cars a week by the end of next year, the revenues will triple so on yusly if you can make money on that tripling of revenues, the stock can go a lot higher 50 higher if they can show that they can make money. But they have to make money. And that will be a mf manufacturing feat to rye valiva apple has done walter price, thanks for joining us when we come back, all eyes on ubl er and its Ceo Travis Kalanick well hear what one investor is saying and what tim cook is calling the mother all ai projects and larts living on bitcoin for a week ccema mody did it with measured suess. Well hear her story my brother [ laughing ] oh. This guy, the mansion and the cars. This is the best . I dont like it. Gru, villainy is in your blood. [ evil laughter ] [ minions shouting ] look at us, two brothers pulling a heist. [ upbeat music ] [ gasps ] im gonna be empaled [ chuckles ] im okay. [ exhales ] despicable me 3. Rated pg. Uber is expected to release the results of an independent investigation led by eric holder on allegations of Sexual Harassment now all eyes are on the near term future of Travis Kalanick lets bring in mike isaac, mitchell green good morning to you both mike, we talked yesterday about travis future do we know more today . I think its still up in the air. The latest eive been hearing, essentially the company has to sort of figure out whether they will slap him on the wrist or have him go away in a sort temporary leave absence in the morning. I dont have any indication that hes going to step down entirely or leave the company, but i do think that there will be some sort being organizati sort of, okay, we need to take him out the limelight for a bit sfwlp wh what needs to happen in your view . I think that the board will do the right thing they are xwig progressiare big l investors. And i think travis should stay at the company i dont know if it should be in the ceo role, but he is a visionary. He built an enormous built that is changing the way people live. And unfortunately, Silicon Valley is kind of like wall street in the 80s and 90s. A lot these its like the brokaws out there. We dont condone it, but changes need to happen at uber and lots of other companies, too. If he stayed, but not as ceo, what would you have him do that is obviously up to the board. Business development . I mean product technology, ai. There are lots much things new initiatives new initiatives and lets not forget, he just lost his mother and his father is very ill, barely survived as well and so i wish are people would also think about that. Some of this could also be the Board Meeting was in l. A. Because of his family, i think that there is probably a lot of it about that, as well mike isaac, how well can this company run without Travis Kalanick hes been very hands on as you haveextensiveextensively and im wondering how aligned he is with the board. For the board to unanimously be adopting these recommendations from the holder report, i wonder is he plighe completely on boar that or is there a backlash against him . Two things there. Essentially as you were saying, travis embodies ubl y ies uber has. Hes been work nonstop at the company for eight years since its been there. Hes essentially hands on in sending texts or calls or emails in the middle of the night to people when hes thinking about different part of his company. So for him to srt sort extricate himself from the nittygritty will be a big deal and the problem is that his number two left yesterday on recommendation of the board so you see this sort of absence of real power or real on yus so obvious sort of leader in the absence of these guys. So i think that you will be look at a number of new appointments. Cfo, general counsel, they just are had a few others come on chief brand officer and new strategy exec. As far as the board is concerned, a lot the tips and sources that ive been talking to that know the boards deliberations are basically saying we have if i dusfiduciar responsibility to this company and need to make sure it doesnt run into the ground. So we have to figure out whether that means travis is fully still the ceo or if he will sort change how he operates in that sense. And i think while he has the support of Board Members and a number Board Members are more supportive of him than others, hes not facing an outright ouster right now is what im hearing. So one of the Big Questions out there, and youre in a good position to answer this, what is happening to the valuation, that 70 billionle valuation . On one hand, the last financial about records showed last quarter revenues are still growing 18 , losses are narrowing. On the other hand, how do you value the future of a company that has now lost most its executive management including key players and potentially the ceo who formed the company the performance of the Company Remains remarkable and it is actually simply amazing. I think that the vast majority of americans, it shows that the vart jos of people around the world just want a service that gets you from point a to point b as fast and cheap as poshsible. You would have seen negatives, but you have seen nothing at all. Which is incredible. In terms the valuation, people, you know, a 70 billion valuation could have been 75, do have beenaeeen 65 its a group of intors who put a random valuation on the company. Vestors who put a random valuation on the company. Well find out when it goes public d do you worry that an uber in which the hard charging cull k4ur was lobotomized would have an effect on growth . Are yeah, i think that the facebook is a hard charging culture, too working for jeff bezos isnt a picnic either i think. But the reason they built the business to where it is and ran through regulations is because of the hard charging culture now the question probably becomes is it better to work with governments that youve gotten to this point in size, like what you saw in the italy, coming back to the hamptons, to austin and there were a bunch of vocal startups in austin in the ride sharing space that popped up when they kicked out uber and lit o lyft and when they were back, instantaneously the companies collapsed and people went back to uber and lyft my understanding is that three have voting control of ubleub uber so how is this even up to the board . That is another thing to think about. Look at the history of Silicon Valley companies google, facebook, snapchat there is a Board Structure and voting share structure that essentially gives founders more control than they have in the past and can essentially say to outside either outside board grekts to directors or eventually outside shar shareholders, that im going to run the company i way i want travis has essentially stacked that part of the board in his favor. And garrett and ryan as you well know are long time sort friends and allies of him. Garrett was founder, cofounder are the company. So it would be really, really difficult to remove him anyway and it would take travis kind deciding that he said would be with that. And i dont think they have reached that position. Lets pivot, apples tim cook on the record sharing new details on the Self Driving Technology saying were focusing on autonomous systems, and clearly one purpose is se selfdriving cars. There are others we see if as the mother all ai projects cook says electric cars and Ride Sharing Companies are playinging a huge role in the space as well mike, did this move the needle in terms of our knowledge of what titan is all about . Yeah, so if you followed earlier this apple was working on a selfdriving car project, project titan, a thousand employees working on it and then it became dysfunctional, executives being poached going to candidate places and so apple did a sort of reset saying what are we going to do, obviously there are a bunch of different players in the space can we be this layer and offer Different Services to Different Companies that are obviously going to be moving in this space. And so youre seeing them, youre saying waymo, lyft position themselves as a platform to be more interoperable among many different kinds of companies that will go into the space. Talk about giants fighting over a pie yeah, you would think it was a winner take all market it its crazy 2 trillion cars are sold globally so there will be lots people that win here. People say in three years that you will be taking a selfdriving car between new york and west with port. And i say listen, when can i take a car that is shaped like a circle so no steering wheel, no driver, and take it in the winter i still think its a lot longer than people think. But apple wants to get in about to it and they also want music product. We thought apple music was going to be a monster, but it has been a disaster i think because they make so much money selling iphones when wispotify going public i think they are looking forward it its an awesome proper dupgt anybo plo pro duct anybody who on has teenage kids are probably on it or if youre 47 who is 47. Thanks so much, guys good discussion. Straight ahead, ditch the cash ditch the card try living on bit the quoin fcon try living on bit the quoin f fa week think you can do it . Seema mody did and shell share the details. Youre saying the new app will go live monday . Yeah. With help from hpe, we can finally work the way we want to. With the right mix of hybrid it, everything computes. We cut the price of trades to give investors even more value. And at 4. 95, you can trade with a clear advantage. Fidelity, where smarter investors will always be. Tszits been a volatile few days on bitcoin, but that is not stopping earn. Seema mody put to the test with all the buzz around bitcoin, we decided to put to the test to see if its possible to live a week in new york city of on bitcoin alone. Heres what i found. Do you accept bitbitcoin . Can i buy this with bitcoin . Do you accept bit about cocoin if about. No. Reporter new york city may have thousands of restaurants, but only a few accept bitcoin including the village in the lower east side. May i check out with bitcoin okay and there we go. Transportation also a challenge. Yellow taxi, subways dont accept bitcoin there is another option though buying uber credits via a third party. Ran out of the house in a hurry, forgot to wear deodorant weve all been there i went on gift. Com, bought a gift card to cvs getting around town is costing me a fortune luckily i found a guy on well who was willing to sell me a metro card in exchange for bitcoin. With the current price, that is 0. 0072 bitcoin. Reporter soinds l reporter so im craving chinese food or pizza, but im stuck eating french food once again because the only place that accepts bitcoin in this maybe hood is another french restaurant thursday night, time for happy hour not really no bars accept bit the quocoibi. I like options but with the bitcoin challenge, my options are limited. And this bitcoin diet is not healthy. It involved a lot takeout using a Food Delivery Service that takes bitcoin. Other takeaways, its expensive with all the transaction fees and the volatility in the price . I ended up spending about 40 more using bitcoin over dollars. And there are so many extra steps including using third parties. Buying your own drinks, really thats a first listen, youd be so surprised given that mabt hnhattan has son restaurants and bars, practically no bars accepted the currency which meant i had to wait it out. Im not surprised because everything that you were doing there was completely legal and where bitcoin is surging and where it is becoming a bigger market is unfortunately in a lot illegal places like ransom wear and that could be driving the demand that is wong of tis one of t lingeringing risks, but there are also a lot Big Companies starting to invest in ibm, intel, and plus the indian government, swedish government and enaustralia are looking for ways to embrace the new Digital Currency so that is kind of the past. This is about the future of what bitcoin can offer. Are all right stick around for more on that future our next guest has a long history with the tech nology and spent three years solely living off the currency hes ceo of poly Chain Capital thanks for joining us. If i understand correctly, you once worked for coin base and the ceo once told me that everybody was paid in bitcoin and he wasnt selling any of it. Did you do the same . And if so, how much appreciation have you seen . Yeah, i was paid in this bitcoin for over 3 1 2 years when i started at coin base, i think built bit tcoin was about5 and now between 2,000 to 3,000 so quite a bit appreciation. Ilt0 and now between 2,000 to 3,000 so quite a bit appreciation. Are and youre investing at the protocol layer what does that mean and how is that different from simply betting that bitcoin itself will go up . There are actually hundreds of other digital currencies. Bitcoin represents less than 40 of the total market capit capitalization of block chain technologies so i did notten hold on to my bitcoin and actually bet on other crypto Graphic Technologies and so when you say youre investing at the protocol layer, what sort ons bets as bets are versus any single one . So we find new protocols that enable new types of be may haves behaviors at an early stage. We invest basically at the seed stage hoping that over time it will appreciate in price from the research we conducted over the last week on bitcoin, one thing that seems to be stopping it from gaining Widespread Adoption is the fact that there is no regulatory body backing it when do you think that will change will they get the green light . You know, i actually think that an etf in the Bitcoin Space is a ways away simply because the Exchange Infrastructure is not as sophisticated as you might see in more traditional markets. I think that said, many regulators are looking to create an intelligent framework in which to kind of understand the technology all right quite a journey ahead for crypto currencies for sure. Thanks to you both thanks for having me. So markets are closing in the uk and across europe lets check out the action modest moves in stock as the tech sector there also recouped some of its losses from yesterdays selloff. The parents of on the toe warmbi warmbier telling the Washington Post that their son has ben medically evacuated from that company in a coma and hes been in a coma for more than a year warmbier were told that he had come down with botulism soon after his trial and had been given a sleeping pill from which he never woke up the Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee adam schiff appearing on morning joe. He said lawmakers will not let President Trump get away with firing special counsel Robert Mueller. I think that i would hope be the last straw for many of the republicans that have stayed their hand and not been willing to speak out if he were to take this step with all its echos of watergate. And how about this for an act of kindness . Casey spellman was visiting friends when she spotted a blind man trying to hail a cab outside Wrigley Field as fans poured out the stadium. Doing a good turn. Thats the news update back downtown to squawk alle. When we come back, walter isaac son on Jeff Sessions testimony and reports that the president might consider pulling Robert Mueller off the russia investigation. Jeff sessions heading to capitol hill to testify before the senate the Intelligence Committee this afternoon in an open hearing Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein of itting right now defending Robert Mueller amid talk of his removal. Have a listen. At this point have you seen any evidence of good cause for firing of special are counsel mueller . No, i have not. And have you given the special counselare counsel mueller . No, i have not. And have you given the special counsel full independence to conduct his investigation . Yes, senator, and i appreciate that question at the last hearing i attended, i explained that it would require a long time to explain why i am confident that he has full independence. Joining us now for more is Walter Isaacson on, president and ceo of the Aspen Institute i dont earn know where to begin, walter. Maybe with sessions testimony in lilt tght of the mueller comt this afternoon how juicy do you think they will be well, i think Jeff Sessions will be very news worthy hes a former senator, so he will get a little bit deference, but i think he will come out swinging i think we saw with that weird Cabinet Meeting that trump did the dear leader sin drop where he wants everybody to keep praising him, hes always felt not always, but the past month felt that Jeff Sessions has not been as worth coming in praising him so i think sessions will come out and be very strong and say that the meetings with can i see kislyak were above board and the third meeting was simply where he ran into him at an event and that i think he will try to turn the tables and attack or at least denigrate comey for having let the memo out about his conversation with trump. I also think sessions will decline to answer any questions about his own conversations with trump. A lot of people expecting that so just put it in context for us with that, with the comey testimony. Well see what Jeff Sessions says but what investors are trying to figure out and were are tryitr figure out, how much is all of this slowing down the presidency and his agenda areare it wont slow down het care because i think senator Mitch Mcconnell has a schedule hes an independent person and i think by the july fourth recess he will have something out that appeals to republicans, including some centrist republicans. Whether it can get reconciled with the house is another question ive never quite understood why the president hasnt come out with what should be the center piece in my opinion of his agenda which is tax reform and tax cut, to come out with a strong plan to start campaigning on at what point do the president s Approval Ratings matter hes tweeted seven times this morning, only one of those is about his actual trip to wisconsin to talk jobs all these mixed messages with the low approval, at some point does it matter politically during the Campaign People thought his high disapproval rating would preclude him from being the nom kneel or the president. As somebody who has written some history, were in unchartered waters here. This is historically something we havent are seseen before. We havent seen a Cabinet Meeting like what we saw yesterday before about we havent seen a president going around firing fbi directors and then floating the possibility or having the possibility floated that he might fire special about procprr so i think once the base really starts eroading, that will be bad and it gets back to your question why isnt he tweeting about creating jobs and going to wisconsin. Thats what his base wants, not he said she said about the Russian Investigation and other things on twitter. Well, tweets aside, i wonder whether the senate can manage a Health Care Vote in june, maybe contours of infrastructure get delynn yatineated better, maybe is a continue ldiplomatic win w korea. Youre not ruling out the possibility there is a white house resurgence of sorts in the summer oh, no, not only white house resurgence, a congress be ional resurs against r resurgence is what you need. You need mcconnell to come out with that Health Care Bill yeah, i think if they focus on infrastructure and tax reform, you could have a resurgence in n. President tru President Trumps information on chun which makes me curious about why they arent focusing like a laser on those two things its interesting to see some of the data. Small Business Optimism just came out 104. 5. Another remarkably his totorica high level how do you see disconnect in some of tf of the levels and so the discussions that were having right here on air about the legislative agenda i think what youre seeing is the economy has continued to recover, you know, even at a pretty good pace where are on your show we talk about it all the time, how it could be a better pace. You have low unaun people will be confident we need to build up the infrastructure in america and that would lay the foundation and that includes in about my opinion basic scientific research, basic health care are research so we will continue to be the leader in the world. So infrastructure, health and science research, building roads and bridges but more importantly rail and air Traffic Control jeks th je next generation. Although things would sustain the xheconomy. I think popularity follows economics and certainly Consumer Confidence trends. Walter, at what point does the clock really start on the 2018 midterms and do the democrats and republicans have to start running on what has actually happened thus far yes, i think this fall you will really see the 28 midterms and it will be very interesting, i kind hope that there will be clarity on health care that there will be a republican bill on health care, that somehow has worked out with the senate and the house, maybe even with a few democrats but if there is a republican Health Care Bill and lets say a certain number people, i have no idea what it would be, might lose health insurance, a certain amount of money might or might not be saved, and then you have a Midterm Election is that going to hurt your family or help your family and i think that is a good election to have if we have some clarity on health care and frankly some clarity on tax cuts and tax reform then you can have an election in 2018 to say did you wiactually that reforge or nm or not and wl see. It might help if we request see the drafts legislation that the senate is working on you know, that is a really bad thing. They should show us that legislation. We will see so far nothing, but maybe well get something as they get movement Walter Isaacson, always a pleasure when we come back, the final words from made rrissa mayer. Dow up 74. Rick, what are you watching . You know, im listening more than watching. Love that conversation we haven a unconventional president , unconventional Cabinet Meetings and unconventional lack of proce productivi productivity, unconventional lack of growth and unconvention are al Monetary Policy globally. Thats what well talk about after the break. On after a two day tech drop, is the worst over . And plus the one stock that legendary investor ron baron says is about to triple. And jim krarm thinks tcramer th could make the bank soar or sink carl, well see you in a few lets get to the cme group and check in with Rick Santelli. Fr you know, this meeting really is important as are every meeting of the Federal Reserve especially in the current predicament that central bankers are in and particularly lets concentrate first on the rate side i give the fed great credit. It is doing something that is very difficult to do, it is reversing something that has lasted too long in the form easy money, highly com date difference policy, long i dont understand ti dont understand the crisis was designed to address. But even with the fed doing the right thing, if this weighs less accommodation and the fed is pulling, ecb and bank of japan are pulling it back like a tug of war if this is where we are, we need to be over here. But even if we raise rates, what they are doing is, a, not raising rates, b, still buying Financial Assets even though he there has been some action on that front, but it pretty much is they go debatig negating, cat to get traction. Imagine a hose to water your garden if you put a bunch of holes in it and plug up one, the other holes will pretty much make up the pressure difference. Kind of what is going on here. There is a second issue. That was rates lets talk Balance Sheet for a moment down here being a spreader is one of the most profitable trades spread is the relationship between two things how the functioning difference of value moves so combination yields on two us, yields on tens but there is another spread. There is a spread between with what traders and strategic economists and analysts are listen are being to the fed versus the fed action. There is a spread there. And in my opinion, its fwheern wider. Nothing like the taper tantrum but i think this is Immediate Gratification type market. Most strategists i talk to with regard to Equity Holdings might have a long view, but especially in the fixed income side what tradable securities are left that arent owned by Life Insurance companies or other Central Banks, that is a small number and in my opinion, opinion, it l behaved. Theyre going wait until they see action and that is going to really be a defining moment because a lot of Central Banks are going to have that exact defining moment, but not as quickly as our Federal Reserve carl back to you. Verizon closing its acquisition of yaare yahoo . The ceo will not remain with the new combined company, but did take the time to share her finale mail to her employees while reaching the moment has been a long road traveled, the its a new chapter its an emotional time for all of us. Look k back at my time at yahoo , weve confronted challenges along with many surprise twists and turns. Ive seen our teams navigate these hurdles an mountains that have not only made yahoo a better company, but made us all far stronger its a nice try she goes on to catalog all of her achievements lets be frank about it, but really, it reads like what a private equity firm who you have done if they had taken yahoo private and installed all the best consultants thats not what investors wanted when they brought somebody from google they wanted visionary, transformational, break stuff p in negative and completely reinvent this company. That did not happen. In a way, this closing post underlines that. I think its funny because one of her first biggest moves as new ceo was to buy tumblr that came one year after since then, she had to write it down two times and is said to be worth about a third of its value and that was one of her early moves. The knock against her she keeps getting is how much she was paid even recent surveys that just came out, the Associated Press looked at the top paid female ceos and janie is right up there at number one on ibm, also the performance there and the stock, but maier, number two. 27. 4 million. Its hard to knock her for that yes, but when you bring over an executive from google with that kind of fire power, shes going to end up getting paid and not enough women in that level executive lies big recognizable companies, plus, alibaba went up.
