Down about 48 points, 15,470. The industrial average settles out, look at the volume number on the light side. 540 million shares traded. The nasdaq gave up 11. 75, 3,654. And the s p 500 tonight down 6. 50 at 1,690. By the way, all of the major averages finishing off the lows of the day. Even though were down in the double digits, we had buyers throughout the session today. It was nonetheless, though, a downer for the broad market. Bob pisani, put things in perspective for us today on the heels of what has been a record setter for this market. Reporter the big story is the constant commentary from the fed officials here. Lets take a look at that, because that will determine what happens in the next couple of months. The bottom line is the fed hawks and fed doves seem to be aligning, and the concept is tapering is imminent. If not in september, certainly by december. Unless the data completely falls apart. The head of the cleveland head came out today, not a voting member, but she said she is prepared to scale back bond buying if the labor market improves. She is considered to be a moderate. All of them are saying essentially the same thing at this point. Look at the dow. Almost went positive late in the day. Not quite. The bottom line is, the bond market the stock market and the bond market, neither one of them, are particularly falling apart as weve had this chorus of fed officials doves, moderates, and hawks all come out and say the tapering is imminent. Look at the tenyear interest rates. The clear important one here. We had a lousy auction today on the 10years as rick pointed out. Rates have been coming down. Even prior to that, rates had been coming down just prior to the monday number. Maria, back to you. Thank you so much, bob. An earnings alert now. Green mountain coffee. The estimates called for a profit of 77 cents a share. Revenue of 981 million. Lets get to josh. He has the numbers. Reporter maria, yeah, Green Mountain just reported. Let me give you the numbers. It is rising here in the after hours. On the bottom line, reports 82 cents. That is a beat by a nickel. Top line, a bit light here. 957. The street was looking for 981. Just looking through the release. Net sales by product, singleserve packs up 18 . Brewers and accessories down 4 . The stock up about 2. 5 in the after hours. Up about 97 now year to date. Maria, back to you. All right, thank you so much, josh. We want to talk more about Green Mountain, the stock on the move, as you just heard. Lets talk lets talk more about Green Mountain, as well as the overall earnings season, the dow, the s p 500, closed in the red for a third day in a row. Joining me now to talk more about it, Chris Constantino from riverfront, rex from wilmington, and mandy and rick. Thank you very much for joining us. So, chris, how would you characterize the earnings season so far in terms of the actual fundamental backdrop for the stock market . Sure. Maria, well, in the u. S. , my understanding is that the u. S. Earnings have come in slightly better than expected. I think over 70 of the firms have beat. Which i think is roughly in line with historical averages. And, you know, i follow markets outside the u. S. And generally speaking, in europe and japan, particularly in certain key sectors like the european financials, those estimates have come in a little better than expected, too. I guess i would give it across the world, a b, bplus. I want to ask you about the International Markets, chris, in a second. We want to get to the groupon earnings. The Second Quarter is out, as you can see there. The estimates, two cents a share. Julia boorstin on that story. Julia. Reporter maria, thats right. Groupon earnings coming in line with expectations, two cents per share. Revenue a hair heavier, 608. 7, wall street looking for 606 million. So thats just a tiny bit heavier on the revenue front. There are a couple of other key things here, maria. The company has announced a 300 million Share Repurchase authorization. Theres also some more color here about mobile, which is obviously a huge focus with groupon as well as the other companies in the space. Eric, the ceo, says we continue to gain traction in mobile with nearly 50 of our north american transactions coming from mobile in june. Also adding that more than 50 Million People have downloaded groupon apps worldwide. Now, there are a couple of other key metrics to watch here, including active customers. So the number of active customers, as people who have purchased groupon, has grown 12 year over year, and the number of active deals increased to 54,000 on average, compared with 40,000 at the end of the first quarter. They are showing progress in those metrics, and they continue to dig through the report. Back over to you. Julia, thank you so much. By the way, dont miss tomorrows special interview, the cofounder and coceo, eric leftkovfsky. You wont see him interviewed anywhere else. On squawk on the street, cofounder of groupon. Meanwhile, back to our guests here, talking with chris, rex, and our own mandy and rick. I thought it was interesting, mandy, one of the earlier guests said that europe is outperforming the u. S. The region has become so bad because of the recession and the debt crisis there that, in fact, people are bargain hunting and now european stocks are outperforming the u. S. Over the most recent near term. Its very interesting, isnt it, and obviously, people are starting to say, well, maybe things are starting to turn around. Dont people say its the old adage that when things are looking bleakest, thats when the time is to get in. When others are fearful, you should be greedy. When things in europe were looking so bad, if you have the stomach for it, its the time to jump in, and if you did, you are reaping benefits and gains for you in terms of profits. And its a similar situation, i would imagine, for some of the emerging markets. You know, here on closing bell, maria, you and i have discussed on a number of o occasions, the damage done earlier on this year in the emerging markets. And its a similar situation. If you have the stomach for it, maybe thats the time to get in. Obviously, time will tell. And, also, you also have to remember that those global markets, whether they be europe, emerging markets, asia, et cetera, theyre all very much watching what the fed is doing, as well, in terms of their tapering and that really ail fekts the currencies. Remember last night the yen went up, the nikkei went down by about 4 . This is very much tied into global monetary policy. So theyre watching whats happening right here in the United States, too. Yeah, no doubt about it. The emerging markets havent really bottomed. But europe is definitely looking better than it has in a long time. We have earnings coming out fast and furious. Tesla is out. The stock is on the move, 6 higher. Lets get the news on tesla and mondelez earnings hitting wall street. Courtney reagan with the breakdown on mondelez. Over to you, court. Thats right, maria. Looking at shares of mondelez moving here after hours. We have eps coming in at 37 cents a share. Thats adjusted. And a threecent beat from what the wall street analysts were expecting. Revenue in line at 8. 6 billion. The company reiterating its guidance, expecting both revenue and expansion growth in the second half of the year. It looks like there was some strength out of eastern europe, middle east, africa. When we look at it by regions. The revenues up 7. 7 . Though europe was down 1. 3 . And a bit of strength for north american revenue, up 1. 1 for the mondelez quarter. Thank you very much. Now on to tesla. Josh lipton is running through the tesla numbers, and its on the move here. 6 higher. What can you tell us . Just reported, maria, and moving sharply higher. Quickly get the numbers. The bottom line, eps, exitems 20 cents. Remember, analysts were thinking you would see a loss here of 17 cents on the top line also a beat, 405 million. The street thought it would see more, like, 383 million. That stock up more than 7 right now, up more than 300 year to date. Maria, back to you. Josh, thank you so much. We want to check in with julia once again. She has more on groupon. Over to you, julia. Reporter thats right, maria. I wanted to clarify. I mentioned eric was he was being called ceo in this press release. I want to clarify he had been coceo and as of the earnings report, eric, one of groupons cofounders and also one of groupons coceos in the interim period since andrew mason left, as of right now, has been appointed ceo. Ted, with whom he shared that coceo role, has now been appointed chairman of the board. Now, one other quick point here is that groupons outlook for the Third Quarter is coming in somewhat light on the low or end of expectations from where wall street had been looking. But now, they do have a permanent ceo and well be talking to him tomorrow on squawk on the street. Maria . Thank you so much. Were back with our guests talking stocks. Rick santelli, let me ask you about the activity next week. I mean, the rest of august, what are you expecting from the markets . Not a lot of catalysts with the exception of fed speak, right . Well, you know, i think you actually hit on a catalyst that many traders on this floor are paying close attention to. The european stock markets outperforming of late the u. S. Stock markets. I happen to have a couple of charts. Whether you look at the dax or the kak, and many think the problems under the rug, the lurch is getting bigger but contained mainly due to the elections. So it went from underperforming to overperforming, and that has been one of the contributing factors of some significant dollar weakness as of late. So i think that that deserves to be monitored. Whether you agree these markets should be here or not, traders are trading them and the arbitrage between the two is one of the more popular trades these days. Yeah, its a good point. Rick, whats your take in terms of putting new money into this market here after the big run that weve had in 2013 . Have we seen the best for 2013 . Well, with an 18 yeartodate return yeah, right. Weve seen most of what were going to get for the year. You know, i dont think the u. S. Market is going down, but we just move money out of emerging markets into International Markets because theres more higher chance for a pleasant upside there than it is here. The p e expansion weve seen in the u. S. We think has run the course for the while. Its moving ahead of the earnings acceleration were expecting next year. And so, do you want to sell here . Do you want to raise cash here . Do you think now is the time to just get to anything in 2014 . What do you want to do the rest of the year if you think the major gains have been made . Sure. I think a lot of the weve talked about the global markets. A lot of investors have shunned europe. Theyve been complacent on the u. S. If you dont have exposure to International Developed markets, you should go ahead and put some money there. Okay. Thats really what i wanted to get to earlier, in fact, in terms of putting money overseas. Chris, this is your area. Would you buy europe here . I would. And, in fact, we have, over the last couple of weeks, weve taken basically a neutral waiting in europe and putting that into a slight overweight. Weve trimmed japan, but still view that as an overweight, as well. I think emerging markets do not look like a buy in our opinion. A lot of people come to me and say emerging markets are cheap. I disagree with that notion, because if you look at the typical multiple for emerging markets through time, it tends to run with return on equity. And the major Stateowned Enterprises dominate the emerging markets index. Their return on equity has been declining now for a couple of years straight. I dont see any catalysts to turn that around. So i like the developed markets a whole lot better than emerging. Sow like the developed. How do you want to tap into that growth, that recovery in krur rop . Do you buy individual companies . Do you buy etfs . I can tell you how we do it, diversified risk managed way, etfs, and some of our favorites are names like etfs like vgk and ewg, the emsi index, because we still think germany is the best house in a transitional neighborhood, i guess to say, in europe. And in japan, we like japanese small caps. Dfj i think is the ticker there. All right. So well look at the europe its an interesting take given the fact we havent really seen the solution in terms of the debt crisis, but people are looking at that market and saying, look, there has to be opportunities given the massive selloff that weve seen. Mandy, what are you looking at in terms of catalyst for this market, for the rest of the month . You know, obviously, were right here in the middle of the summer slow the youve been mentioning the thin trading. And i whispered in the ear of my good friend herb greenberg, and i said, youre a smart guy, what are you focusing on . He said, considering that earnings season is winding down, right, and theres not a whole lot of capitalists in terms of really important Economic Data and obviously with earnings winding down, we need some kind of positive catalyst to propel us beyond where were sitting right now. He was saying this is an important week, because its a lot of the battleground stocks. Weve had a number of the earnings this afternoon, right, maria, like groupon, Green Mountain is another, you know, dmz its another big battleground stock, tesla another big battleground and the earnings are important to watch with the stocks, because obviously, with big moves and a number of the stocks have had, they have to be able to put the statistics and the performance behind the runup in those stocks to be able to justify it. So i think thats something that people should be watching this week. And going beyond there, you know what, as i said, its pretty quiet. Weve got a bit of a summer to get through, right . Yeah. Its true. Its true. But sometimes when its quiet and volume is on the light side, you can make the most money. Well be watching. Thank you, everybody. We appreciate the time. Well see you soon. With another down day in the market in the books, some are worried that the bull run is running out of steam. But bob dole says u. S. Stocks are still the place to be, though hes keeping a close eye on the Economic Data. Bob, good to have you on the program. Thank you for joining us. Thank you, maria. Better Economic Data would surely mean the fed pares back sooner rather than later, right . Yeah, i think the fed will find an excuse almost no matter what the data to announce in september, the beginning of the process. Its clear they want to do this, and with the federal budget deficit shrinking so much, i think theyll get that started. Okay. So let me ask you about september, because this whole idea that the Federal Reserve is going to start the tapering process next month, just boggles my mind. I mean, i just i dont understand it, given the fact were still looking at unploinlt that, you know, 7. 5 . Do you think september tapering, the beginning of it i know it doesnt mean theyre changing rates and theyre not going to necessarily change significantly, but do you think thats still possible . I do, maria. Look, i think when the fed started this, the Federal Reserve deficit was a whole lot bigger, meaning the net issuance by the treasury was a lot bigger than it is today. So technically, to have the same impact, they need to reduce that amount. And unless we have really bad economic number, i think well go there. We got 1. 7 for real gdp recently, the Economic Activity since then suggests that numbers probably going to be revised up. So youre right. Were not singing on all eight cylinders, but things are okay, enough for them to do that. Youre right, it has nothing to do with raising rates. So what do we need to see from the economy to have that hold true in the next 30 days . You know, so i think if we just get kind of two out of three Economic Statistics being okay, theyll go forward and begin that tapering process. And reinforce lots of different ways that rates are still essentially zero, and will be for the foreseeable future. The line ive tried to use is say the fed has been a 100mileanhour tailwind for s us, and theyre going to shrink that at some point to an 80mileanhour tailwind. Thats still good news, just not quite as good news as it was, which means we need revenues and earnings to do better for stock prices to have the next noticeable leg up, and i dont think thats today or tomorrow. So where do you want to be in equities given all of that . You know, i think the switch away from defensive bondlike equities to more cyclically oriented names is still one to Pay Attention to. While the u. S. Is still a strong place to be, as you said in your last segment, to begin to diversify within equities outside the u. S. Makes some sense. I would even, with patience, nibble on emerging markets. Theyre a whole lot cheaper than they were. I still think the longterm growth thesis is there, as you all pointed out. Europe is less bad. Thats usually the beginning of better news in equities, so i would be more globally diversified, but underscore one more time its equities over almost everything else. So what about that, the International Exposure . Ive been talking the last couple of minutes about europe and certainly about emerging markets. Weve seen a big underperformance in emerging markets. Has that area bottomed, or do you still want to stay away . And what about europe . Are you buying europe right here . Yeah, nibbling on it. Look, i think the structural issues are still there, and while the recession maybe with the bath water if you will, the companies that do have strong growth and good cash flow characteristics. In emerging markets, maria, look, i think you have to and nobody wants them, nibble away at them, thats been the history there. I dont want to be a hero and buy it all tomorrow morning. But i think dollarcost averaging in with the u. S. Profits is not a bad idea. All right, bob, good to have you on the program. We so appreciate your time tonight. Thanks. Thank you. Bigname earnings out after the bell. Josh lipton is rounding everything up for us. Josh . Reporter a quick rundown of movers here, maria. Green mountain, lets start there. Reports 82 cents. That was a nickel beat. Revenues were light, though, at 967 million. Guidance also a touch weak for the fourth quarter. Tesla, here is a big mover after hours. A gain of 20 cents. Reremember, the street thought you would see a loss of 17 cents. Revenue clocking in at 405 million versus 383 million that was expected. Gross margin improved to 22 , up from 17 last quarter. 5,150 cars were delivered. Thats way past their expectation of 4,500 and beating the streets estimates. Also, tesla reiterating the plans to deliver 21,000 vehicles worldwide for the year. Mondelez gives us 37 cents. Exitems beats by three pennies but revenue light. Finally, groupon in line on eps. Revenue beats, 608. 7 million, analysts thought you would see 606. 2 million. Maria, back to you. Thank you so much, josh. Herb greenberg has been combing through the Green Mountain results. Of course, hes been a follower of this company for a long time. Herb, what do you see . This is quite an interesting this is one of those sort of what you see is not what you necessarily get quarters when you actually dive into what the company is saying, and you compare it with what they said in the past. The guidance looks optically better on revenue for the fourth quarter. But this includes, when you actually adjust for an extra week, you actually have guidance that is actually lower on the revenue side, and it would be the Third Straight quarter for revenue reduction. Same for eps. But theres also some interesting nuance here. The company says it expects over the long term doubledigit annual Revenue Growth and annual Earnings Growth in the midteens. A quarter ago, and this is where its important, the company said it was comfortable with longerterm outlook and a longerterm outlook of annual sales growth of 15 to 20 . So going from 15 to 20 to just double digit. Thats an important an important change. And then, you look at tmargins. 42 . It looks good. Better than expected. Its a beat. But then you take into account lower coffee costs, a lower sales return costs, and you get to what would actually be a lower gross margin than expected. Also very important, the kcup sales, its important to point out, they were pretty much in line with expectations, not a big beat. Thats what youre seeing in the stock right now. Back to you, maria. Thank you so much. Meanwhile, twitter, very quietly, preparing to go very public and the social media giant has a reallife case study on what not to do due to facebooks ipo last year. Julia boorstin has the story. Reporter maria, twitter is staying private for as long as possible. And in the meantime, its doing everything it can to bolster its Business Model so it can avoid facebooks postipo crash. Twitter is expected to file a preliminary s1 with the s. E. C. By the end of this year. Last month, briefly posting a job for the reporting manager to put together the paperwork and is projected to have the ipo in 2014. It has a valuation of about 10 billion thanks to a Business Model focused on advertising with promoted tweets, accounts, and trends, all designed to blend into the sites content. Now, emarketer projects it will near 600 million in revenue this year, nearly 1 billion next year and over 1. 3 billion in 2015. Those numbers could be even larger as twitter launches tv partnerships and taps into the value of all of its data. We believe theres a lot bigger opportunity if they can leverage the data that theyre collecting about users and especially the users affinities to help marketers target advertisements better. Reporter as twitter moves closer to being public like facebook, facebook is looking to capture some of twitters market share of the Global Public conversation. Today, facebook announced trending topics which are awfully similar to twitters. So is imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then facebook thinks twitter is on to something big. Maria . Thank you very much. For more on what to expect from twitter as the anticipation for an ipo grow, our own Carl Quintanilla will host the twitter revolution, and david menlo with us. Good to see you both. Thank you very much for joining us. So the twitter ipo frenzy has begun. The company has not even officially made an announcement. David, is the twitter ipo on the horizon . I think its on the horizon, but i would probably fall in line with what julia said, her report, sources said, 2014 might be the earliest. There isnt any apparent rush for them to get into the marketplace. But once they do, its going to be an entirely different footprint than what we saw from facebook. I want to ask you more about that. Carl, no doubt about it, twitter has been an incredible revolution. Talk to us about whats behind this revolution as we anticipate your fantastic special tonight. Thanks, maria. Obviously, look, they have a huge rival in facebook thats five times their size. Their stated goal is to make every person on the planet use twitter, so they have huge costs, huge cap ex costs if theyre going to scale to that degree. Davids right. It would make sense for them to file an s1. They have hired a manager of corporate development, a former Morgan Stanley banker who worked on a number of deals in the past, including selling zappos to amazon. I think, though, its not a given. I think the guys want to keep control long term. If they did go public, youd be looking at a dual class stock. And i just think a sale to a big player like maybe an apple is just something not to dismiss entirely. Yeah, but in terms of the amazing success that this company has had, carl, to what do you attribute such incredible popularity and really a massive takeoff . Well, i think i think, for one thing, you got big players on board, for one, right . Getting the pope to have a twitter account, that moves that moves the needle. Yeah. It gets a lot of people who ordinarily wouldnt follow Justin Bieber to maybe think this thing is serious. I also think the way our media is moving faster in realtime, the way its converging with television. You watch tv, you tweet quickly. It just makes it a little more easy to use than facebook. And i also think some of the cultural issues, the ads, the games on facebook, kind of cluttered it and forced some users onto twitter that maybe were looking for an alternative. Yeah. David, you said the ipos performance is going to depend a lot on the underwriter that twitter chooses. Absolutely. Theres no question that whoever the underwriter is going to be and obviously the big names, the jpmorgans, goldman sachs, Morgan Stanleys theyre the guys in the primary running seat. You mentioned Morgan Stanleys involved somehow, an experson from that. But the facebook offering was a failure when if first came out as an ipo mostly due to the structure that led up to the actual ipo itself. So you saw a wrongpricing model as far as the range that you d had. You saw additional stock being added in a very large way. And then, by the time we got to it, all of the air was out of the sales. You got to you have to give some of these guys credit, because, you know, james gorman, we were on the Morgan Stanley Trading Floor that day, and we were saying, hey, you know, what the heck happened here . He said, this is one day. Lets wait long term. Now, here we are one year later, the stock is above the ipo price. So, you know, can you really call it a botchedup yes, clearly. Because the first day was botched . The first week. The first week and everything leading up to it. I would say i was born at night, but i wasnt born last night. You didnt fall off a truck no. He had a responsibility to make sure that everybody was calm and didnt act in a very crazy kind of way, even though the stock did go down. It could have been prevented, but the manner in which it was brought to the marketplace really promulgated that. A minute ago, you said, look, this will be entirely different. Whats going to be so different about twitter . I think the underwriters are in a very different spot than they were 15 months ago when the twitter when the facebook offering came out. This is a buyers market. Even though they have a hot commodity, they know they have to handle everything differently. A week before the facebook offering, and probably the twitter offering, youll see a mass, a locust, deskecending on the wall street area, because the bigmoney guys will be coming down and saying, you have to get me more stock than you normally would. So there will be a lot of institutional pressure and theyll say, this wont happen again. Carl, you have a lot of wannabes. Twitter has been so successful. Now theyre looking behind them, looking at instagram. I mean, this technology movement, they happen fast. I was thinking, maria, what the s1 looks like, what kind of risks, the competitive risks. One of them will be clearly, in five years, we have no idea how well be communicating. So that is i mean, its one thing to manage a business for how were all doing business now. But these guys have to be looking ahead to where the puck is going, not where the puck is. Yes. I do believe if they were going to go public, if facebook hadnt happened the way it has i dont know if david would agree they probably would have done it by now. That put a real damper on the valley. And if you think twitter hasnt noticed the wasted year facebook has had, youre kidding yourself. Youre right about that. Guys thank you very much. Great conversation. Of course, tonight, youll have to stay tuned for carls fantastic twitter revolution that premiers tonight. Watch and tweet about it, tonight on cnbc. David, good to see you. Last night right here on cnbc, the second episode of the profit. Marcus lemonis, trying to bring a dying flower shop back to life. Marcus joins us now with more. Marcus, good to see you. Hi, maria. How are you . Good. For the very few people who missed the show, because they were watching shark week, heres a taste of what went on. You know where hank is . I dont know. I dont know if hes gone home or what. I cannot believe he left. Not only is it disrespectful to the employees, its disrespectful to all of the customers who are coming here today. He really left . Like, hes gone. As far as i know. He literally disappeared. Im pissed. Oh, hey, hank. Whered you go, buddy . We have a grand opening. Yeah hank, i dont understand why you left. [ inaudible ] this is [ bleep ] ridiculous, you need to [ bleep ] come back here. This is ridiculous you left. Turn the car around. Get your ass back here and be a leader right now. So, marcus, did he come back . He did not come back. He did not come back. I was disappointed. So what happened on the show . Did you turn it around . Are you making a profit . So, in this particular episode, we put in all of the things we said we would put in the business. I spent about 150,000, but at the end of the day, he pulled out of the deal and said that he didnt want didnt want to honor the handshake we made. So now what . Well, im going to have to file a lien on the building. I will tell you that carl dataut me how to use twitter, because my twitter account blew up. We had an ask the profit segment. It was interesting to see how people do business. I was surprised by how many people were outraged by how people dont honor handshakes. So the 150,000 was lost . At this point, the 150,000 is lost. Im two episodes in. We made the deal with carl cash, which i think will be wildly lucrative, but at this point, im 150,000 down. If anybody wonders about whether the show is kreel or scripted, ive heard a lot of different things, if it was scripted i wouldnt have lost 150,000. Wow, all right. So yesterday on our show, the Vice President of white castle was on, and he wanted to talk about obama, the obamacare, the legislation. And the impact on their hiring strategy. He said that they now will only hire parttime workers because obamacare is too expensive. I want you to listen to what he had to say and id love your reaction. Listen to this, marcus. The only alternative we have to that is by looking at the future and hiring parttime team members. For us, if youre full time at white castle, youll stay full time and keep your benefits. But for the future, we have no choice but to change that Business Model to adjust to real world. Do you agree with the strategy, marcus . I dont. In fact, what i would ask jamie to do is look at other parts of his business. Look, providing healthcare for employees is essential, but to now shift your entire Business Model to parttime workers in order to kind of accommodate this expense, it seems outrageous to me. So what will they do, go bankrupt because they have to offer Health Benefits to everybody . Its too expensive. Well, theyre not going to go bankrupt, maria. Everybody knows providing healthcare is an important thing. Yes, it will affect sg a, but there are other things we can cut. We have to look at the advertising, look at the other frills. But to change a whole Business Model over this, or to even imply that youre going to go bankrupt is i hope hes not implying that is ludicrous. He didnt imply that. Thats just my sarcasm. Its great. I like their hamburgers but i dont like their plan. All right. Thanks, marcus. Well be watching. You can catch last nights episode tonight, by the way, 11 00 p. M. When the g20 leaders meet in st. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin will be getting the Cold Shoulder from president obama. The president says he will attend the summit bus is cancelling a planned oneonone meeting with his russian counterpart. The white house infuriated when putin granted asylum last week to Edward Snowden. New York University Global Affairs professor mark gallioti says president obama is making a mistake, and good to see you guys. Thank you very much for joining us. Mark, let me begin with you. Why do you think the cancellation is not a smart move on the part of president obama . To be honest, someone who has been a russian watcher and worked within foreign service, it has the classic ingredients of a diplomatic muddle in between. Its enough to annoy putin but not enough give him a serious message. I would like to see president obama take the disagreements face to face with putin. You would prefer him have the meeting and discuss face to face why it is russia is giving him asylum . Exactly. Lets face it. The white house is saying this is not about snowden. Theyre basically saying were postponing the meeting because basically we havent got enough agreement with the russians. Right. As far as im concerned, thats when you need to have summits is when youre not agreeing on things. Right. Right. David, how does the president s decision factor into the pressure hes gotten from congress to basically insult putin publicly . Yeah. I think that this was actually a pretty easy call for the president. I think that president putin, six weeks before a summit, knew that when he was granting temporary sanctuary asylum to Edward Snowden, that he was putting the president in a spot where he would have to have to react very negatively, and that this was probably going to be the outcome. So i think that the initiator here is definitely president putin. I mean, im not unsympathetic to marks argument. I think generally you do want to talk, and i dont think this is a signal that we put the u. S. russia relationship into the deep freeze. But no american president could have made the decision to go attend a summit meeting with the leader of a country who is just offered asylum to an individual who the government is intent on prosecuting for pretty high crimes. Yeah. I wonder, mark, if this emboldens putin rather than make him think twice about russia granting asylum. I dont think hes thinking, oh, maybe i shouldnt have done that. In fact, i was reading some of the blogs earlier. Theyre, like, laughing at us. They think this is a victory for russia. The trouble is weve been here time and again. I agree with you. What putin is very good at knowing how far he can push the surly adolescent, the you cant make me. And right up to the point of hitting the true red lines. Hes been criticized in the p t past, hes had people snub him in the past. He knows that he can just ride it out. So i think from that point of view, this is not something that will substan substantially hurt. What is the impact . Pretty limited. Its not as if were cutting diplomatic relations. Its not as if all of the meetings between the we have kerry meeting his counterpart, all of the important meetings between the officials, which is part of really what diplomacy is about. Theyre carrying on, this is purely a symbolic gesture. Its big news today. In a months time, it will be forgotten. So no big deal. I think so. And you dont think this impacts u. S. russian relations long term . The reset is dead. Yeah, what do we do now . We wont have a rereset. Yeah, the point is russia needs america more than America Needs russia. Its important to have good relations, but just as american leaders talk to counterparts in china, even though the chinese are actual spying on the americans and doing all kinds of other thing, the whole point about diplomacy is having tough conversations and thats what, at the moment, unfortunately, obama is not having. All right. Thank you so much. We appreciate your time. Well be watching the developments here. Well take a short break and then look at the we appreciate your time. So you have time to focus on the things you love. Ink from chase. So you can. Finally tonight my observation on the escalating tensions between the United States and russia. Its not exactly the cold war but theres a bold frost in the air. Last night in his first major interview during the recent economic campaign, the president sat with jay leno but when they got talking about the nsa leaker Edward Snowden and that russia granted him asylum he told leno he would go to the summit next month then clar fied he will go but he will not meet with putin one on one. It is clear why. So what is the fallout . Well, there has been bipartisan move in washington but some bloggers are taking shots. It said that obama did not refuse to meet with putin because of Human Rights Violations in russia but rather because of Rights Violations in the United States. Another from a pro putin newspaper, russia strictly speaking does not care. What can we expect from obamas visit anyway, a second reset . The first one failed. Who even remembers the first one. This is just the latest from an emboldened and combative russia under putin. He seems to be in there for life. He poked americas eye by taking in snowden by on all things we really need russias cooperation. He consistently takes the opposition of the United States. He has banned american couples from adopting russia babies. So far the only reaction from our government has been to cancel the meeting. You have to believe it wont be the last and certainly the long term impact remains unclear. Before we go take a look at the markets today and some of the hot stocks that weve been talking about all day. The dow down 48 points. S p 500 down 6. 5. We have winners in the extended hours.
