President obama i am here to insist that we are not as divided as we think because i know america. I know how far we have come against impossible odds. At best we honor the image of god that we see in one another, and recognize we are brothers and sisters, sharing the same brief moment on earth. And owing each other the loyalty of our shared humanity. What struck you most . These are two guys that have done this before, and i thought they were just extraordinary. There are so many constituencies and negativity and conflict within the country, and i thought they did a beautiful job. They are so good at it. They had been through this crucible before. Being optimistic at a time where people are wondering when the optimism can come from. I agree with that of course. In a weird way, it was good to see george w. Bush up there. He has done so little of this kind of thing since he has been out of the white house. To be reminded of how good he can be in situations like this. And president obama, it is a horrible true line to his presidency. These shootings, the mass shootings, individual shootings, he has had to console an awful lot of parents. He mentioned it twice that he has been to many of these things, but as grim as it is, he has gotten very good at it and his ability to call on scripture, and speak the language of spirituality, very powerful, it was powerful very last summer when he did it in charleston, and very powerful today. One of the things resulted that is a remarkable ability. Almost every sentence they said, you would say, of course that is true. All races, religions, parties of there. I am not sure the whole nation and attention, but my instinct is that dallas is going to have a lot of good feeling today and try to fight back from the horrible week they have had. For sure. It is no diss to president bush. He comes from a unique place, of course, as the first africanamerican president. In some ways, the speech recalled to me the speech he had that he gave on race in 2008, where he talked in a powerful way to the white constituencies and the black constituencies for both sides to sympathize with to empathize with the other. He gets criticism from the right on focusing on police brutality, and criticism from the left on focusing on the white police officers. I think he is the Perfect Pitch on these things. The way he spoke to both constituencies today in a way that was real, embracing, anin a measured way, uplifting, was about perfect. Now, i followed on twitter and saw a lot of conservatives praising the president. I thought this is great. This is great to see that. Some people are regular critics of the president , praising him. Later they were nitpicking on little things. I thought today was a day to set that aside. And more than usual that happened. To see both president s up there. And seeing president bush and mrs. Obama chatting away. It came at a great time that we needed a great day. Still ahead, everything you need to know about republican Vice President ial candidate pick. It is the republican the key states that has reached critical mass. All signs pointed to indiana governor mike pence as Donald Trumps choice. There is a lot of news outlets suggesting parents is the choice for trump. Some are saying it is all but certain that he is who trump will choose. A local indiana reporter, a respected veteran journalist, tweeted late this afternoon, confirmed mike pence departed the airport at 4 10 headed to new jersey. Video is going to be on the air at this hour. Lets assume that trump picks the Hoosier State governor. His parents a good choice . It is a safe choice. He will not do any harm, which is really important. A Newt Gingrich or a Chris Christie would have been a more exciting, and more explosive choice. Mike pence is steady, reliable, he will not embarrass the candidate. It helps a little bit with the social right suspicious of donald trump. I think it helps with some of the big donors including the koch brothers. The thing that is a risk about mike pence, when he was in the national spotlight, he choked. He is better than that. He is a very steady guy. Very steady politically. The good thing about pence is if trump is going to went through this race, he is what to make the story about Hillary Clinton. If he had chosen Newt Gingrich or Chris Christie, it would not have been about Hillary Clinton. I think pence will have a good week. He will be prepared. He will have good people around him. He will be good at the convention. He will be good in his meeting interviews. I think that was primarily why he was picked, to take to put the focus on trump and clinton which is what trump wants. Can you imagine Newt Gingrich or Chris Christie making the case against Hillary Clinton on ethics . It wouldve been laughable and counterproductive. Vice president s, we get all excited. It do they carry this or that . You have to go back to lbj to find one that really made a big difference. Mike pence in that sense is a very safe choice. The other thing i think about pence he is a steady influence and a policy guy an opposite and trump. He is opposite of trump in a lot of ways. That will reassure people. I have been asking for weeks, will trump took someone that people will say that person is qualified to be president . They said absolutely. I think he clears that bar just as dick cheney did in Joe Biden Dick Cheney did and joe biden did. He has positions on vote he has taken. He voted against the Prescription Drug bill. He voted against the bailout of the financial industry. He got some kind of antigovernment vote that will fit in nicely with the trump coalition. He will have to adjust his profree trade position. He is not as heavy as his predecessors. Very solid guy. Mike pence has been around politics for decades. He is a former congressman and a radio host. He is a social conservative. The Opposition Research team at the dnc, the clinton headquarters, they had been preparing and it had pence and their site. Where will they go after pence . From the hillary campaign, it said, he will be in real trouble because he joined donald trump. They told me they had a whole huge litany on Chris Christie and Newt Gingrich and they could not use it. There will be social conservative views. He will be depicted as antigay. He got in great trouble with that socalled religious liberty issue out there. Sometimes he has not been the best politician. He ran against john boehner and got clobbered. I agree. They will say he is too conservative on social issues, and will look to highlight areas they disagree. They wont do trade very hard. The thing that i think he is vulnerable on is his position on indiana. His popularity has gone down. He is in danger of losing his seat to a democrat in a republican state. I think that points to the fact that he is not governed anywhere that has increased its popularity. After next week, except for the debate, there will not be a lot of discussion on mike pence. Yeah. I saw joe donnelly who is an who is a pretty able politician. He said, i really think democrats are going to win the governors race in indiana. I dont think he is blowing smoke. The thing about mike pence is that even though he has hardline positions, a lot of democrats like him. He has Good Relationships. He has a pretty Good Relationship with democrats. I think, you are going to have a hard time getting a lot of democrats going out and trashing him. That is my sense of talking to democrats about them. Republicans recognize that people will rally around him. This would not be a guy who will be attacked, wont have defenders. Even if democrats come after him, he will not be a dan quayle, a deer in headlights. He makes it more likely, if he chooses a tim kaine rather than an Elizabeth Warren. Safe versus safe. The two other finalists a donald trump was considering and believe that have not been eliminated our Chris Christie and Newt Gingrich. Chris christie sat down with Nicole Wallace for discussion. For a discussion. Also, Newt Gingrich logged onto one of his life facebook q as. I thought he had a choice between two pirates on the ticket. Or having a pirate for a more normal person. Some of your supporters feel like it is owed to you. That no one has taken more lumps for backing him when they did then you. Do you feel that way . No. No one is owed the vice presidency of the united states. The guy who wins gets typically chooses. I dont view it that way. If you do view it that way then you dont have your eye on the ball. Win the race first and be the person who can help the president be the best president he can be. Al, we both know that christie and gingrich have lots of baggage. If it is pence, like you think trump that way . My guess is he was inclined to go for one of those because they are great attack dogs. He saw the real downside in that. I mean, Newt Gingrich, i am glad he finally confessed he was not normal. I first had lunch with Newt Gingrich july of 1974 when he told me the party had to get away from ronald reagan. And christie, we will talk later about this plea today, but bridge gate has not gone away. I think left his own devices, trump would have picked one of those two. He was getting advice from some people who work favorable to those two. The main advice was that they were to volatile in terms of their background. Like i said before, youre not going to put Newt Gingrich or Chris Christie on the National Stage for several months and not have days where they create a story. Where they are the story. And not in a way that is advantageous to trump. So, picking them, to me, seemed to be too big of a risk. What mike pence help him get elected by being safe . Probably not. But neither would christie or gingrich. Imagine Chris Christie going after hillary comes in on ethics . Wait a second. Imagine Newt Gingrich tried to attack her on the personal behavior of her husband . He tried that once before. Coming up, we got more questions about trumps new runningmate. We will talk to a trump Senior Advisor who knows mike pence. Kelly ann conaway joins us right after this. It has been an eventful day for the republicans and their party. There was a rules Committee Meeting out in cleveland, and everyone is talking about Donald Trumps decision. Joining us now to talk about both is Kelly Ann Conaway joining us from new york. Kelly ann, i am looking at my twitter, and it says that reporter by the name of Jonathan Karl is reporting that donald trump is offering the vp slot to mike pence. Is that true . Kelly i cannot confirm that. If you want to know you have to show up at the hilton are put on a tv 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow. You are familiar with people on Donald Trumps shortlist. Just give us the case for mike pence. Not to say he is the pick, but what does he bring to the ticket . Kelly a couple of things he showed the other night at the rally that one can attack the candidacy of Hillary Clinton, challenge her fitness to be president , but to do it surgically, and methodically, yet passionately. I think mike pence can take a comment by Hillary Clinton that she made in west virginia, promising to put the coal industry out of business and travel that comment westward through pennsylvania, ohio, indiana, illinois, michigan and iowa. You make them competitive. He has a 2 billion surplus. A lot of infrastructure development. The economy is going very well in indiana and has created manufacturing jobs, which is something that donald trump says he was to do as president. A lot of people are skeptical of that. Under pences leadership, they have. He also checks washington box and spent 12 years in congress. 10 of those were on the Foreign Affairs committee. The last term in congress before he went to run for governor, mike pence was a Communications Person in leadership of the Republican Party. He was on tv ubiquitously. He was the face of the party. I am a conservative, but not in a bad mood about it. They could really use a more positive, uplifting, inspiring spokesperson. Talk about mike pences personality, which is underrated in terms of his sense of humor and how outgoing he is. I think a lot of people only view him casually the national through the National Prism look at him as kind of a stiff. He is not a stiff. He is very funny and had a radio show for many years in indiana and referred to himself as Rush Limbaugh on decaf because he is more measured and laidback. Those of us on the east coast cannot always relate to someone who is reflective and not reactive. Who thinks about it. Recently, mike pence made a couple of comments about the state of the race. It seemed much more measured and unique in their content then maybe what i think gardenvariety commentators were saying. Also, i think mike pence will help on the policy part. Donald trump moving into areas of policies. You saw the 10 point plan to reform the Veterans Administration this past monday in virginia beach. Very specific and concrete. He is also very well respected by members he served with in washington. I want to point out two quick things one is people missed his comment where jeff was very glowing about his friend and former colleague. Jeff is a senator from arizona who was pretty salty towards nominee trump when he had his meeting in the senate. Some people thought it was a bit disrespectful, but it definitely was confrontational. If he puts mike pence on the ticket, it is another window to window into getting the nominee part of that party unity in all corners. Secondly, the donors and consultants in the Never Trump Movement are longtime friends and longtime supporters of governor and congressman mike pence. The question is this is the first major decision by the nominee in terms of personnel. What say you about someone you work with and trusted for a very long time . So, i am continuing with my feature interview because the country will have to get to know this guy. Talk about the pence family, mrs. Pentz and their children and what kind of family they are . Kelly karen pence and mike pence have been married for 31 years. Their son is recently engaged and served the nation. Charlotte and audrey, their two daughters. The children are all in their mid to late 20s and they are a very closeknit family. They are a tightknit family and they make decisions together. It was reported that their one daughter was with them when they came out to meet the trump family several weeks ago. I think the trumps made a decision when the children were ages 4, 5, and six when he got to congress, if i am correct, and they made the decision to be together as a family in the washington suburbs, to raise the children there so that they had dinner together every night. That is very sweet, and very much to they are. They are very active. Karen has kept a lot of her own schedule. Very popular speaker and popular leader in indiana. As the country gets to know them, they will very much enjoy them and like them. That is also why, as has been reported, the official vetting of governor pence has been very clean. Kelly ann, there have been a lot of activity in the rules committee in cleveland. The campaign is monitoring it very closely. It seems like efforts to forge a compromise have broken down. What can you tell us about what will get you guys what you want . And get a relatively peaceful convention . Kelly those conversations are ongoing and that is a function of the rules committee and Platform Committee. These conversations are very healthy. The democrats had a conversations like that in orlando where the sanders people got an awful lot of what they wanted. These conversations are healthy. There are some people who are part of that Never Trump Movement and the free the delegates will be done to pull my hair out movement double be pull my hair out movement who will be disappointed today because a silver trade that some folks may be looking to make a difference for 2020 and not 2016. That is Something Else i wanted to say about mike pence. This is an everymans story. I think my questions though, my party veering dangerously close to being the party of the elite. I appreciate the fact that donald trump has brought the Republican Party more to the party of the worker through a lot of his plans and ideas. I think the trump pence ticket would complete that. Mike pence grew up with a cornfield in his backyard. People can relate to somebody who is not ivy league educated, comes from a bluecollar background, knows what it is like to lose a job and wait for the next paycheck. Something mitt romney tried to pretend he knew in 2010 and nobody believed it. Mike pence has faced a pink slip. I am happy for my party, too. I dont want the Republican Party to be the party of the elite. And what policies, and who has influence in the party. I think it is a really positive step forward, especially when it seems at a time when Hillary Clinton is having a very difficult time gaining trust, and projecting herself as a person of the people. Positive step forward. If he is choosing mike pence. What is up with ted cruz coming into cleveland . Kelly i am thrilled that senator is speaking at the convention. He will have a lot to add. I am glad that mr. Trump asked him, and let that senator cruz agree to speak. Why hasnt he endorsed him yet . Kelly what does that mean . He is going to the convention . Take it for what it is . He will inspire a lot of people. He came in second in a very tough year. He got the silver. I think sen. Cruz there is important. Governor walker and certainly governor christie, others are speaking, a very positive step forward. A lot of reporting has been about who will not be at the convention. We are going to have to force ourselves to see who is going to be at the convention. A little bit of an unconventional convention. I can tell you back at headquarters, everybody is very excited about the convention coming together. They are going through a great deal of the same kind of enthusiasm and confidence, and grassroots bottomup type of vigor that we saw although the primaries. We hope that will continue into cleveland. In a place like philadelphia, Hillary Clinton runs the risk of the overshadowed by two president s who are more popular than her. Elizabeth warren and bernie sanders. This is Donald Trumps convention. It is going to feel that way. When you hit the crescendo, it will be record ratings. Can we do see you there. Kelly ann conaway, the only person who can defend the position of two former president s who are popular. Always a pleasure to have you. Up next, the wisdom from two allstar strategic masterminds. Thank you both for joining us. We want to run through the people we think are on trumps finalists or potential vp. Tell us the good or the bad of each prospect starting with anita. What you think of the prospect of trump picking mike pence . Anita it could certainly help him carry indiana, which is a good, right . He is not exciting. He is not dynamic. And he has real negatives from his time as governor. James, what you think of pence as a choice for trump . It helps the democrats for indiana. So you are both pretty bullish on that . [laughter] how is he going to help went through the presidency . You guys think pence is a bad idea. Do you think Chris Christie would be a good running mate for donald trump . Anita he is a good running mate if the only thing he had to do in the campaign was to debate whoever the the democrats nominate. He brings his record and his personality with him. I think that outweighs his performance. James, do you think that is right . James he crushed marco rubio. There is a lot of downside with the potential upside. It assumes that the nominee can get ready for the debate. Anita it is scaring me that james and i are agreeing this much. [laughter] you have had a decadelong relationship with your friend Newt Gingrich. I am wondering having recorded the first two options, do you think gingrich is a better choice for trump . James if you took the combined Approval Ratings in georgia and louisiana, it would not add up to 75. There was an article about how multiethnic the party and how young. This is a reflection of a deeper problem they have. Gingrich is an aggressive guy and i think trump thinks he can attack hillary and give him some slack to do other things. That is all i can think of. Anita it is interesting because i did have a number they did have a number of really good potential choices that announced really early they had no intention of running the trump or who trump has insulted. Gingrich temperamentally is someone trump is comfortable with. It is important. Nothing says future like someone who was speaker in 1995. I am going to think that Jeff Sessions will be a stronger choice in the first to talk about . Anita i am not sure what Jeff Sessions princes ticket i dont know what Jeff Sessions brings to the ticket. Senator sessions is someone that trump seems comfortable with as well. He is very partisan. He is from a deep south states that will not be competitive. Again, it gives them the ability to say he picked somebody. James if you look at the people out there talking about this, if i am a republican, i have to be sick about this, the choices i have for Vice President. That is obvious. Lets talk about Hillary Clinton. Leif tim kaine aside. What is another name would be a Good Alternative if she decides against them . Anita i have always been a fan of Elizabeth Warren on the ticket. The excitement of having to women, but Elizabeth Warren is a great campaigner and really connects extremely well with voters who are concerned about economic inequality. It would be a great ticket. James, what is a name you like . James i would love Elizabeth Warren and Chris Christie to debate. [laughter] james that is something i would really love to see. Lisbeth worn is terrific. Elizabeth warren is terrific. I dont think we are going to know. Knowing her, she will be very deliberate and Read Everything and make up her mind later. It is going he will be off on her own. If he picks Chris Christie, please pick Elizabeth Warren. That price president ial debate will be one for the ages. [laughter] james, let me stay with you. If you look at the election trying to address a problem, what is a major vulnerability that clinton needs to solve with her running mate selection . James if you look at the polls across the board, she has got to show that she is in it for the people as opposed to herself. He has a lot of motivation. You got a lot of College Educated republicans that are very trepidations about voting for trump. I would not put Something Like that passed her. I happen to think as mark knows, it is sufficiently it is hard to lose a general election. Anita, what is your thought about that than question . What problem is you need to solve . Anita she does it near tucson anywhere near the problems donald trump does. Experience, ability to get things done in washington, Foreign Policy knowledge, and basic temperament and qualifications to be president , all of which are unsolvable by his Vice President. For secretary clinton, she could go with a candidate who is a Younger Generation who could send a message about the future, and also stronger diversity. As james said, she could look to somebody who cannot communicate that she does care about people, which i like chains, believes she does. Sharon brown, Elizabeth Warren, tim kaine he is a terrific guy. Fluent in spanish. Has experience and qualifications people look for. He would be additive as well to the ticket. At the end of the day, it is what she thinks who should be the Vice President on who would make a good president. She will make a good choice. James, are you giving a device to Hillary Clinton these days . James all the time. She is pretty set on going through each thing. I just know her, and i know she is going to go through this, and she will listen to anybody and she will listen to what anybody has to say. Having run against both parties, donald trump has got more on the status quo side. How can you be more changing than donald trump . A Vice President ial nominee that would send a signal that changes coming would be very helpful. I dont know how that plays out. But that is something she would consider. Anita, you talked to a lot of democrats in these battles states. What is your overview of how democrats are feeling about the prospect of possibly losing to trump in this race . Anita well i think polls that are done in july after youve had significant you have had a significant news event that was negative. There is a lot of campaign between now and then. Trump was artificially low at the end of june based on possibly the worst month of campaigning. Anita, what i am asking is our people worried in the Democratic Party . Anita no. They understand it will be a close race and we have to go out and went through it, and we should not be complacent and should not take it for granted. Democrat sometimes look at trump and think how can i got ever win . His polls may be a bit of a wakeup call. It is a tough race out there, but i do not think people are worried. They look at her and they see somebody who can win the debate and have a great convention. And basically, you know, head on head against donald trump, she is going to win. James, in the wake of last week in the wake of louisiana, i know you are really familiar with that state, minnesota and dallas and all of the horse of last week, trump is playing the law and order card. A lot like nixon in 1968. Is that smart politically for him . James i was reading my before i came on here they were saying that you were calling for a moment of silence for that horrific shooting in dallas, and of course no one can find such a thing. I just find it hard to believe in any sense that when people are concerned about this, that donald trump is the go to person in this process. You know i am a diehard democrat and diehard clinton supporter. But i really mean that. I dont see where he is playing this thing anything close to the way the country is looking for him. 30 of the country agree with it no matter what. But i dont see anything he said that would expand to 38 . Anita, what you wonder about the Republican Convention . Anita i wonder what the narrative will be . It is an extraordinary opportunity to present the story you want the way you want to present it. They have not given us any indications of what that will be. It feels 51 of the greatest opportunities he is ever going to have to present his story the way he wants to present it. The question is, can they rise up to that equation rise up to that location and use it the way they need to be used . What to expect here in cleveland next week at the Republican National convention . Here with us now in cleveland for more other Republican Committee next weeks reporter michael. It is great to see you. Amish, you report on social justice. Talk about open carry in the laws that return and the laws that pertain to the state and security. The open carry laws and ohio really mean they can fan stuff like backpacks or water guns, but they cannot ban any handguns or ar15s. Anyone coming from around the state, ohio residents can come carrying those weapons outside and openly in a holster as long as they can see them. They do not need a permit. You could see a lot of people with a lot of guns, and they can have them out loaded or unloaded. I wrote a story about people talking about the idea that after dallas, people are worried they will add to the confusion of an already confusing Republican National convention. The law is that you can have guns out and be visible. And fear and paranoia. Some of the groups that are protesting are saying they will come packing. They are protesting. The Southern Law Poverty Center describes them as this really extremist military right group. They say they are really there to help protect people and help the police do their jobs and shoot somebody if things get out of hand. There is a protrump group having a rally on monday trying to ban people from caring long arms. The problem is it is a little squishy. They do have a permit for the park. So they can kick people out. You can imagine if someone has a loaded ar15, and you are telling them not to come to the park, that will be really hard. Mike bender, talk about your general sense of the trump campaigns relationship to the rnc to the delegates to this event. I have been talking to some delegates and some rnc Members Around the city large here working on a Platform Committee, getting ready for the meeting coming up. I am very excited to be here in cleveland. This is my hometown. I am not getting the same sort of excitement of delegates and rnc members. Specifically the people putting the platform together. They have no reason to believe that trump will be campaigning on any of these issues they have spent weeks and months assembling. Representative Virginia Foxx was brought to tears yesterday after putting this Platform Committee together. There is a disconnect between the delegates and their candidate. I talked to some folks who said we are building our platform, he is running our campaign, and that is just the way things will be. Not a lot of real excitement there. And asking them what they like about trump. A lot of folks say, he is not clinton. That could be an affect the the political message what are they thinking right now . Are they looking for a victory . What they are telling me it is mostly a pure victory. What they will count as a victory is if they can convince people the education process, they want to talk about the process, which is that the primaries should just be a data point and how they ultimately decide to vote on the floor of the convention. To me, that is an inherent flaw. If you are not for trump, it seems to me like you have to be for someone. They want to talk about the process. They want to talk about how to pull the party together. If it leads to someone other than trump, but hard to motivate a lot of people. Thank you. We will be right back. Thanks for watching this edition of the best of with all due respect. We will be back monday with a brandnew show from the Republican National convention here in cleveland. Until then, go to bloomberg politics.
