None of the candidates including jeb bush have much by the way of foreignpolicy experience but my question is on the basis of this speech doesnt look like jeb bush can be a credible foreignpolicy candidate . He has been to israel five times and has been to israel four times a year since he left the office. As you mentioned there is a gap on an issue where republicans could capitalize. Jeb bush could fill that vacuum. Experiencing for him will be a problem. Whatever you think about Hillary Clintons record as secretary of state she has way more foreignpolicy experience and that will matter more than it has in the last couple of cycles. This is a start and a case that republicans will like. Do you think that this guy with that case, if he wins the nomination, whether that translates to an election context. You got a view that he will try and hit. My brothers foreignpolicy was maybe two robust and president obamas is too much hanging back. I will hit that sweet spot and get there in the middle. I have learned from past administrations and he thinks he will be able to fill that gap hit the perfect foreignpolicy. There is a question and we will talk about this about whether he is more inclined to with his father or brothers foreignpolicy. There will be a big debate about Foreign Policy in the nominations fight. A guy like rand paul will take a different position and a question of that sweet spot. Not just in and of itself but relative to the isolation, that is the problem. You will see some someone like rand paul. I think youll hear all those arguments. That is not the majority but you will hear those arguments made for sure. Where will they have the most impact . Maybe after new hampshire. There is the guys who made cap buchanan their favorite. There are two truths here. Jeb bush has a surname problem. It is too obvious to avoid and he did not beat around the bush. I have been fortunate to have a father and brother who shall helped shape americans foreignpolicy. As a result my views will be held up in comparison to theirs but i am my own man and my views are shaped by my own thinking and my own experiences. The question becomes can jeb bush simultaneously embrace and separate himself from his family . That is a tight rope. It is what he has to do. He will not disown his brother or his father. He cannot fully embrace certainly not his brother. Not only within the country but the Republican Party, the bush brand is tarnished. Trying to find that middle ground will be extremely tough. Is their possibility, you get the sense from the speech today he is going to address that he had a brother and a father in the white house and he will spin everything forward. If his opponents do not do that than he loses cool. He talked about the surge about iraq. We will talk about this. That was a heroic thing. He says mistakes were made. People were asking questions. Was the iraq war a mistake he will have to answer those questions. Trying to do what he is doing and saying i want to look to the future, that will not be enough. That is does he have the temperament. Will he be able to give the same disciplined answer . It is different when you get on the national stage. You can tell he has got a little bit of a temper exactly but they can be thinskinned. The question is when he can keep it in check. Hillary clinton is far and away the front runner. Followed by a dozen krispy kreme donuts. There is trouble in hillary land. The republicans within shouting distance should tie with them. Scott walker and rand paul those are important swing states. The question is a looming temperature a looming question. Is it better to have a coronation or is it better for her to have a tough nomination fight to toughen her up . It seems to be the question. There is a way you can split the difference. No viable candidates have emerged to take her on so far but that does not mean she is not on the ground in iowa or new hampshire. That does not mean that she is not participating in public forums. If the campaign had their way they would figure out a way somewhat of a challenge. One of the biggest advantages , financially and every other way. Her merging relatively unscathed. She should go out and fight for the nomination even if there is a bunch of tin cans you are fighting against. The worry for a lot of people is without that opposition what she will do is kick back and coast and that will be bad for she does that. If Bernie Sanders challenges her does she take that challenge . The Democratic Party will have to have the debate. The Democratic Party cannot not have the debate. She will have to say yes. There is no question she will raise a ton of money. The idea that she can keep her powder dry and keep those resources dry for a time when republicans are dumping their cash. She cannot look like she is entitled. That is the biggest risk for her to look like she is on Cruise Control and expects the coronation and deserves it. She has to look like she is scrapping. Are you thinking about dropping out of college like scott walker, are your parents like you that is not cool . Governor walker has something to say to about people who think a College Education is all of that. We have an ivy league trained lawyer in the white house for the last six years who is pretty good at reading off the teleprompter but has done a lousy job leading this country. I would rather have someone who can take on special interests and win. The question is more why he does not have a College Degree then that he does not have one and there is a lot of digging. I am not suggesting i know anything about his time at marquette but the question, why he left and whether he can give a nation for that will be key. An explanation for that will be key. That question and that answer is if democrats or republicans decide to go after him that is great. I would think his camp would say, not me. That is a direct attack on the presumption that lingers in the background of obamas Foreign Policy, particularly from his first term that the present is something that lead to instability. Jeb bush is in the gop foreign cop policy cans consensus and is the continuation of how romney thought of americas role in the world and the way he spoke about it. They rolled out 20 informal by advisors committed to him and ran the gamut of his fathers administration. How much does that list matter and is anyone of those elements that are apparent that you sense that he leans toward. It is hard to say where he is leaning. That list is a pretty impressive list of gop and bush world Foreign Policy types. There are both sides of the debate. You have paul will for wits who is the archetypal neoconservative. And you have everything in between. What i thought was interesting is jeb bush, like george w. Bush, wants an idealistic Foreign Policy. He was also very critical and this was the most direct shot at george w. Bushs administration that thinking that elections alone will solve the problem and talked about how in venezuela and gaza they were groups that won election that use the election to take more freedom away from the population. That is a very subtle difference from the emphasis on elections 10 years ago, more or less in the second inaugural address where he said no longer will we tolerate an era where we supported stability at the expense of values and we got neither. Now you have jeb bush tweaking that slightly. He said we support the military dictator in egypt. His brothers administration was tough on my baruch mubarak. There was a lot of discussion about making us solvent that would indicate that jeb was leaning more toward his far fathers foreignpolicy. This is more of a realist conception, more like the elder bush or is he trying to mix up and take the best ideals to go and combine them to the pragmatic influence of his fathers foreignpolicy and with a hybrid. I would say lean more towards hybrid. I would not be quick to say that [inaudible] she was seen in ws administration as the stalking horse. If you read peter baker, they were the initial authors of the surge, going against the collective foreignpolicy wisdom of the George H W Bush crowd. I think it is to hear to say that she is a realist versus an idealist. She is something more interesting than either one of those labels. Jeb bush is clearly an interventionist. He believes in not just the value but the virtue of american hegemony. There is a lot of room to to will the actions to meet that goal. You tighten the news and you do things and wipe them out. That is what obama is talking about. You know a lot about foreignpolicy politics. Tell me about where you think he is on the aces of the speech where he is most vulnerable to criticism from within his party. It will be a big subject in the republican nomination fight. It is very important, i would say. Jeb bush careful to say the enemy ideologically was a radical violent islam. Obama would not say that but his rather would not say that either. Is that enough to cover his flank with the element of the Republican Party that wants a lot more focus on the islamic element of the ideology of our enemies . He will probably you very much on the conventional side. The other thing is you got the sense of the way bush talked about american power. Using American Force and boots on the ground would be something that would be a good thing although he did not commit in any way to sending more troops to iraq or syria. If he continues to go down that road and explaining things in terms of the virtue of a large american footprint and american power, restoring all role as leader of the free world, things like that could draw criticism from elements of the Republican Party that have turned inward and are uninterested in the what they would consider to be the misadventures of the george w.
