People were celebrating those dayd deal they bastille celebrations. Yvonne when you talk about the state of emergency, what does that enable authorities to do . It gives them extra powers to arrest people that they consider suspects. France has been on alert for seven months. St since january 2015, when we saw , itattacks on Charlie Hebdo has foiled several attacks since then. There was also the attack caught in november last year, which left 130 people dead in paris. This state of emergency that has been in place since then was supposed to last until the Tour De France on july 26, but it has been extended for another three months. You so much. You can get more on that at bloomberg. Com. You can find reports and market data, and you can watch some of the interviews you may have missed today. Lets head back to china. Measures to boost the economy may be paying off. Growth stabilized in the Second Quarter as lending and Consumer Spending perked up in june. Stephen engle broke those numbers for us. What do they tell us . The economytells us has stabilized. The lshaped recovery has solidified. Rebalancing effort, whether utilizing more innovation and services as opposed to industries that have overcapacity. Lets run through the numbers we got this morning. Better than expected gdp number for the Second Quarter, up 6. 7 yearoveryear. It is the same as the previous quarter. You are getting a bit of a floor, and you are also getting a number right around want the government is looking at for the fouryear. Numbers forrevised the First Quarter. From First Quarter to Second Quarter, one 20 . Also, we revised the Second Quarter from one to 1. 2 . They are building 1. 1 to 1. 2 . Your building momentum. Industrial production was higher than expected. 6. 2 from factory output. We were expecting 5. 9 . Good sign, it could also be a worrying sign, that they are building more overcapacity inventory. Lets look at fiscal spending. Since 2000. Umber we have been talking about targeted stimulus in the forms of railroads, railways, and the like. Governmentfixed Asset Investment has surged. Privatefixed Asset Investment has dropped off. Jpmorgan hadaking, some initial comments. Overall ine today line with expectations. June activity is much stronger overall. Overall, todays data is comforting. China is on track to achieve this years growth target. Angie yvonne it looks like the economy is being propped up by targeted stimulus, but it is also being propped up by lenders, right . Reporter yes, lending early surged in june. Often times, we get frontloading of lending. We will get to retail sales in just a second. s, 1. 38 trillion 1. 3 trillion, the secondhighest figure of this year, for new loans. It shows they are pumping lots of money into the economy. Aggregate financing much better than expected, 1. 63 . You have to be careful between better and bigger. Money supply also surging 1120 . 11. 28 . Arting they are shopping. Angie a pretty yvonne a pretty good set of numbers. Lets go back to the markets to see if there was reaction to that data slump. Juliette, what a week it has been. Juliette absolutely, yvonne. You can have a look at most of the markets in the asian region. They are still tracking higher. We have seen a little bit of a switch out from the shanghai market. If we could get the graphic up, it is down by about 1 3 of 1 . There we go, down by 1 10 of 1 . A little bit of a switch out from that earlier high. This is wherean, the support has been this week, and really driven this rally and a queen markets. The nikkei 225 a by 1 . Up by 1 . In japan, we are looking at the best weekly gain for Japanese Equities since december 2009. Regionally, we are looking for a good week as well. In australia, the asx 200 was supported by the better than expected gdp number. Some of the coal stocks are looking good. Cold up by 2 . Blue hit bluehaven also rising by 5. 2 . The retailer myer cold up by 2 . Is also looking good. The s p asxrally on 200. Singapore coming back online today after the Technical Glitch yesterday. The Singapore Exchange tried twice to get its market back online. Seems not work, but it like whatever was in the system has been ironed out. It is up by 7 10 of 1 . This rally continuing across asia. A solid week for investors. Have a look at that spike in the aussie dollar that we saw after the gdp number and china came better than expected, now up for tenths of 1 . 7627. 7662. Line is jumping in its debut in tokyo and new york. What are investors saying about this huge move today echo today . First of all, i think investors are not terribly surprised. I think the man in japan demand in japan was expected to be stronger in new york. Shares jumped as much as 60 at the open. Investors were not too surprised, because the retail presence in japan, where they control about 20 of the market, it was expected to be very strong. Retail traders here in japan, they trade on leverage, margin trading, and they tend to like stocks that are popular with the general public. For example, tech companies. Nintendo, for example, is very popular. Appmine, it line is an that half the population uses. Anyone 10 years old to 50 years old uses the app. Two very popular at. Investors are not a very popular app. Investors are not particularly surprised. Of interesting takeover is that, at the current valuation, line is actually at 10 billion. Two years ago, they tried to go live. In 2014, they tried to go public. At that time, they are were growing much stronger, and their value was 2 billion as well. Although the company itself is much more mature and not growing as strongly, they did manage to hit that 10 billion valuation. A lot of people are asking, is this appropriate . Going forward, can they maintain this . A lot of chatter like that so far. Overall, a Strong Performance on day one. Yvonne so far, so good. We all had inklings of it only had to wait about 90 minutes in the session before we finally saw that pop. Once it does settle and all the hype is over, what is next for line . That is the key question. It is not uncommon for Technology Companies to have a strong ipo. If you will remember, twitter or zynga, these guys had fantastic and a couple days later they are already below the ipo price. Just now, mentioned the growth is not as strong as it used to be. They are not adding users outside japan, and they are strong in taiwan, thailand, and indonesia, but the question is, can they keep growing beyond those markets . Investors are skeptical. All of us use some kind of chat app, and once they start using the chat app, you kind of stick with it, and is there any reason for people outside the core markets to start using line . That will be the key question, keep adding users, and if not, can it monetize existing users more . Yvonne thats true. Too many out there, these messaging apps. We will see how things go for the rest of the day. This hour, ater on through the haze bang, Singapore Says it will cooperate with indonesia to solve their annual pollution problems. Plus, china stabilizes through the Second Quarter, but our next guest says there are clear kleins clear signs of a slowdown. Yvonne the overseas advisory arm of bank of Communications May be planning ipo in hong kong. It is considering listing by the First Quarter of next year. It has asked investment banks to submit proposals. We are told the shares could raise about 200 million, and the deal would make bocom the first of chinas five largest lenders to invest. Samsung is buying a stake in a chinese electric carmaker. The south Korean Company will disclose details once the deal is confirmed. Samsung says it will not engage in management. Thirdquarter profits beat estimates, despite cutting a profit forecast for the first time in six months. The stronger yen has eroded overseas earnings. Downullyear network is 2. 5 percent, partly due to 350 million in Foreign Exchange losses. Chinas economy stabilized in the Second Quarter as lending and Consumer Spending helped keep the slowdown under control. The china president told the Monetary Policy boost told us the Monetary Policy boost would not last forever. Reporter what we have seen in last quarter was, it hit the alltime low. Yet there was not enough to borrow. Firms are not looking at lower Interest Rates as appetizing. You are not seeing a bounce back because rates are lower. That china should cut rates and stimulate demand, it does not happen. Those days are over. It will not happen going forward. Asset management says if the pboc were to ease further, now is the time. A window of opportunity right now, because overall we are still love the view that the feds would probably raise rates, so for the pboc and other central banks, now is probably the right time. If you want to ease your policy, you will have to make a move in the coming months. Yvonne our next guest has spent 12 months diving deep into the economy. What is really going on with asset quality, tools, and the debt situation . The cohead of asia listed equities. Great to have you here. First of all, your takeaway of the state of numbers that we got coming out of china. What was the highlight . Guest it is good to see positive news come through. 6. 7 to gdp in the Second Quarter, slightly ahead of economists expectations. Reminder that with china, you have to look at the rebalancing act of the government and economy is going through. Equally, i think you need to assume that there is not a hard landing. What we have seen, which we are placing a but of emphasis on i is a on, is a twospeed economy. The consumptionled rebound at the moment. The paper we have written, we spent a lot of time going through the statistics and data and looking at the qualities. The positive note from this is, to rebalance the economy, it has to happen but the Services Sector. This is something the empirical this rebalancing act is playing out currently ok. Ok only. We had a bit of a bounce, i guess you could say, after two week quarters. Weak quarters. The service side it seems to be staging a rebound. Can this be saved . Guest that is probably more the positive side. If you look at the negative side, it has come from continued extension of credit. You have seen a lot more credit come into the market. The pboc did news to use unconventional monetary tools. That in thed about past, the tools were the pboc puts money into developing banks in the real economy. The question is, what would be the gdp figure if that monetary stimulus was not put into the market . That is interesting. We are looking at the next point, the interest rate, the pboc base rate sits at 4. 35 . They have not cut right since october 23, 2015. I think youre going to have to have the price of Interest Rates allowown, and that should the whole economy to come through. The services will continue to grow. We have spent a lot of time looking at the balance of payments going through the accounts. U. S. Dollarslion net that leaves china by the current account. We are looking at the Services Sector, and they are saying real data, and that number could go above for hundred billion dollars in 10 years. That Services Sector above 400 billion in 10 years. That is what is required to rebalance the economy, which is reliant on fiscal stimulus. Yvonne real quickly, you are able to calculate a rough estimate about these npls. 1. 6 trillion is a big number. Guest when it comes to china, take your time. It took us 12 months. Time poring through documents and translating, and that is a number which we think is accurate. Our take is, after getting that number and doing this research ourselves, it is not as bad as we first thought. It is not as bad as the market generally banks. It is a very high number. Whole asomy is a a whole is a 10 trillion economy. Of the gdp, there is about 18. 5 trillion u. S. Dollars in corporates. Us, there will definitely be some npls that come through. The government will also look to carve out some of these by securitization. Our paper really looks at what tools, options, and reform measures are available currently. Yvonne we will talk more about that. Joining us from a cori investment management, thank you. Coming up, Australias Central Bank is considering a multipronged stimulus plan. We will have that scoop. Ofnne the reserve Bank Australia has been studying extreme policy options in case conditions force it into unchartered territory. Lets go to ball allen in sydney. Cash rate is drifting lower. What are these unconventional what unconventional measures the rba will consider . Guest there are a few they have looked at. One is Balance Sheet expansion. They are looking at longterm repurchase agreements. But the bond market in australia is not huge, so Corporate Bond markets can be looked at as well. Although the rba says it would be backing work to get on that path. For foreign assets, internationally that could be viewed as Exchange Rate targeting. They would not relent intervention in an extreme scenario. It is important to stress that all the scenarios would be extreme. There are also some extreme measures they say they will not do, right . Yeah, they are not a fan of negative rates. Seemspter money as well to have a line drawn trade. The rba says that governments find in vindictive. Yvonne a bit of a lesson you can take. That bad, that the rba might actually have to deploy some of these measures . Reporter the mixed picture here, because we had good growth at 3. 1 , unemployment is under control, but on the other hand there is low wage growth, and another concern is low inflation. Just 30 minutes ago, we had a survey of economists saying they expect the cash rate to be at 1. 5 by the end of next month, yvonne. Yvonne paul joining us live from sydney. Lets take a look at how things are doing in the asiapacific. We are seeing the gdp figure out of china, a slight heat slight beat. The aussie dollar also rising. It looks like a global rally could be going on for a fifth day. Up 1 2 of 1 in korea. In hong kong, the hang seng looking good. Stocks climbing to a threemonth high of about 6 10 of 1 . Looking good across Southeast Asia as well. Singapore functioning after yesterdays glitch in the trading system. Seeing the hang seng up by. 6 . There has been a little bit of a switch out of the asian market. Extending those losses that we saw during thursdays session, which was a retreat from threemonth highs. A lot of signals in terms of technical showings that the a sharemarket is overbought. A little bit of a switch out coming through. We saw that gdp figure. 6. 7 for the Second Quarter. The big story of the day has rp inthe ipo of line co tokyo. It is one of the best performers in the region today, up by 41 at the moment after it had that very solid day, rising by about 50 . The state of play across asian markets at lunchtime. Yvonne we have been focusing on line with our guest today. He is happy the companys aspiration is becoming a reality. Dream, in terms of the smartphone optimized service, if we complete our respect our chances in the u. S. Market. Another is skeptical line will be able to expand its reach globally. This is a dark cloud for Line Corporation as a whole. It is my belief that it is going asiaonly phenomenon, that it will be contained in asia. David kirkpatrick says line will have a tough time differentiating itself as it competes with facebook and tesla. How much is that difference going to be valued by the users and the world and the marketplace when you have this governor of facebook with whats whatsapp and facebook to i think you have to ask yourself, how much can they differentiate right being more contactcentric and more entertaining . , they are a real opportunity. It is not because they are a tech come pretty. They are a little bit more like disney. Onnne that was the word line. Lets update you on the situation in nice. Dozens were killed when a truck drove into a crowd celebrating bastille day. French president Francois Hollande has called it a terror attack and extended a state of emergency. To happen inpect the next couple of hours . About 3. 5 hours from now, the french president will be holding a National Defense counsel meeting. After that, he and the Prime Minister will be flying to assess the situation. A few hours ago, in the middle of the night, he gave a televised address and this is what he said. This attack that has all the elements to be called a terrorist attack is once again we have to do everything in our power to fight this terrorist plague. He is calling it a terrorist attack. The interior minister also calling it a terrorist attack. He extended a state of emergency for three months. He said he will keep 10,000 deployed as part of that. Arrived inr minister france a couple of hours ago and said they are looking to identify the attacker. You can see the truck moving along the front of the nice beachfront. The French Interior minister said they are working to identify the attacker and looking into whether the attacker had accomplices. Yvonne those are big questions. Are we getting more details of what led to this . We dont know anything about the attackers so far. Of course, they are looking into that with some urgency. 80 people are so far dead. 18 at last update injured. The truck drove through quite a bit of people who were celebrating bastille day. ,here are different reports out but anywhere from several hundred meters to two kilometers. You can see the video speeding up. The truck driver was shot and killed by police. Insee pictures of the truck this video right now. The pictures of the truck that im seeing from the front look like it will be peppered with bullet holes. Was shot. It happened at about 10 00 p. M. A lot of people were out celebrating. Soldiers blocking the intersections to make sure people did not get close to the area. This is being investigated. Still need some clarity on what and who. A lot of questions still out there. More answers when this meeting comes up in a couple of hours. Those attacks come as heads of state meet in mongolias capital for the 11th europe meeting. Have seen condolences come from all across the world. What reaction are we getting from leaders there . That is right. It has really cast a shadow over the meeting here. We have been hearing the german delegation told us that this has pushed terrorism to the top of its national agenda, which we have discussed in length here at the summit. We had around 50 leaders from asia and europe who have come to this summit and we have heard from the likes of the belgian foreign minister. We have heard from the European Council president. Take a listen at their reactions when they arrived here. For france, europe, all of us , it is tragic,a the subject of the attack where people were celebrating. We all stand united with the families of the victims, the french people, and the government. In the fight against violence and hatred. We are trying to combine our efforts. That is the most important issue. We are at the level of the United States united nations. But we are avoiding all terrorist attacks. The belgian foreign minister speaking earlier, saying that what needs to happen now is greater coordination between the different eu states and tween the eu and asia, saying there is a greater focus needed on radicalization. He will be pushing those discussions here. The leaders here did hold a moment of silence in memory of the victims in nice. So a very somber mood here and it has changed the discussion somewhat. I am sure. What else can we expect from the summit . Tom we are likely also to hear comments about the south of sign of china sea. Of course, we had the ruling from the hague. We think the foreign minister from the philippines will bring it up. We have governmentlevel leaders from vietnam, malaysia, and indonesia hoping to push home this point. They may also be pushing their european counterparts. We have yet to hear a statement from the eu. Issues that will likely come up as well. Brexit, britains new foreign minister and kevin will be and cabinet will be in focus as well. Russia, Prime Minister medvedev is here. We have heard bilateral talks between chancellor merkel and medvedev, possibly about sanctions. They were extended a while ago, just a few weeks ago. We have heard there are divisions in europe when it comes to the extension of sanctions going forward. And also trade. Europe trying to encourage asian nations to invest in infrastructure in europe. They got a bit of money last week from the chinese, a couple billion euros worth. They will be pushing for more investment in china. They would be looking on a consensus on the one road, one built project. They were hoping to invest in some of those schemes as well. Yvonne thank you so much, tom joining a from the 11th asem meeting. Coming up, tourism and cosmetics stocks. Hear from them next. Yvonne a quick check on the latest business headlines now. Estimate since the big banks reported earnings this corner. Consumption in the u. S. Remains strong and they affect expect the effects of the brexit to be limited. Lse investors gave the green light in a near unanimous vote. The exchanges may still face opposition from regulators. Bayer has raised its bid for monsanto two months after its first did was rejected. It updates offer to new the 55 billion in cash. Earlier, it was reported that monsanto may strike a deal with another German Chemicals giant, basf. Skeptical that either suter has what it takes. Monsanto shares rose 3 in new york. Juilette, are steve, and talk to me about your Investment Opportunities in china. Are you more towards the new economy . We do not like cyclical stocks. Beijing recently. We like services. There are a lot of subsectors from that. I like to talk about things like education. Metics, all different types of services. That is what we like. We like tourism as a theme as well. For one thing, they are cheap and people are so bearish on the economy that where there is any kind of uptick, that leads to a dramatic move. David corn shortterm upside potential is what he is saying. They are trading so cheap that any minute change in sentiment might lead money back into these guys. Sectors. Y unsexy sam in the short term, you will see a lot of volatility in those sectors, which are quite cyclical. We take a birds eye view of this. Steel, cement, manufacturing, materials. What we really see is significant capacity in those areas. Things like Stateowned Enterprises in china, you look debt and it is an issue if you cannot refinance it did fortunately, at the moment, they are ok. But the converse argument, if there is any deterioration, you have a lot of debt sitting on these companies. As the debt only increases the risk you are better off playing safer with products and services and tangible earnings. Steven the numbers we just got out of china, the economy is doing better. It really is a twospeed economy. There are many places that are in deep recession. I see this credit bid i look at that number and it is worrying because they are pumping money into the system. They are adding to the debt pile. That is a worry down the road. Think you are right. Look at the debt that is coming in. Credit creation has been one of the great sources of the economic drive in china. To enterprises who have gone out and invested. What we see now is that invested capital, the incremental return on equity has deteriorated so far into overcapacity issues that what is the point in spending more money if you dont need to. Or if you cannot generate a sufficient economic return. We are looking at that and thinking, your point, you are faced with a twospeed economy. Rebalanceer and the of the economy back to the Services Sector. That is the most important thing. And i Services Sector was very surprised with the Industrial Production numbers. The retail Sales Numbers were also higher than expectations. Yvonne we have breaking news to go to. Reached the daily limit. The biggest gain since the stock since 1998 after the owner of uniqlo reported betterthanexpected forecasts results, but they did cut their forecast. David this is perhaps a passive play. Has the brexit thing changed anything . Sterling changed your bullish views on any of these Tourism Companies . Sam we did a study into the tourism sector. Where are the mainland chinese traveling to . It is japan, hong kong, korea, and thailand. Those are the top four. So they are the most important. The visitor numbers continue to beat expectations. And the dollar spent continues to be increasing. We look at things like the korean cosmetic names, the airport names. These are the names that are really benefiting. Evidence, ifl anyone has ever been in korea or thailand, how long does it take you to get through the airport . I think that is far more important. The brexit came and went just as quickly. That was a oneweek event. Now share prices have recovered beyond where they fell originally. You have written that the market is in a low conviction period. Sincellion has been added exit. Too far, too fast. Do you agree with this . This is one of the most long periods in a market that i have seen in a long time. Volatility is traded on consistent news and share prices, peoples level of conviction. You are seeing great moves. Whenever you have that, i think there is the potential that stocks will go up or down very quickly. We are very longterm buy and hold investors. Fundamental in our approach. Play thee do not volatility. We are very longterm. But convictions in the market are very low at the moment. Yvonne what does that mean . Do you pile into stocks . Do you go into fixed income . David has the rally we have dampenedss sovereigns demand for equities . Rates fornterest longer, what does it mean . Generally speaking, most assets are part of the riskfree rate. You have japan and other regions now as well. Equities should go up. At a little bit more. We look at each company on individual merits. We have had a higher test than usual. That is the way we are doing it. For us, the key thing we need to see is corporate earnings. The corporate earnings need to come through. We invest confidence based on the fundamental merit of the corporate earnings. Yvonne cannot just be central banks. Really great to have you, as usual. Coming up, blue skies thinking. We will hear from singapores environment minister on what they are doing to achieve a hazefree environment. Yvonne breaking news on samsung on reports that there were talks car, in, the electric buying a stake in the company. Themaking a statement to catch to the exchange on this report that samsung was going to purchase a 4 stake. They are saying that the private share sale results are not complete yet. They will be announced when they are completed and they are saying that the private share sale is not done quite yet. The korea Economic Daily mentioned about selling this 4 stake to samsung, about 500 or 442 million. Byd shares up 5 right now in hong kong. Worst fires in indonesia that sent a case across neighboring countries last year triggered Health Problems and financial losses. Now singapores environment minister has told bloomberg it is willing to cooperate with indonesia to solve the problem. Indonesia is concerned. They have to put in better regulatory oversight. To maked concessions sure that these lands are not cleared by burning. I am happy that there are some footsteps. The body that is going to is taking very good steps. Companies that do not share information with them publicly. We believe there will be less haze this year. That would be even because they have done a good job or because the weather is on our side. The longerterm is what we are worried about. This to happen. It happens every time they need to clear the plantation. Therefore, over the longterm, we hope to be working together by 2020. Singapore has made clear it wants to prosecute the parties responsible for the haze. It has yet to be successful. How is it to put it in place . A country can take into task anyone who is hurt by the environment or people or property on our land. Noticed a number of these directors and Companies Give us information to show they are doing something. Not result in actual prosecution, but i am sure, from the signals were getting, that they will. Is it true the majority of those who received the notice is have yet to respond . Apprehend them and bring them back. We have to have the cooperation of indonesia or wait for them to come to singapore. For sure, if they come to singapore, we would put them through our process. Yvonne that was singapores environment minister. Lets talk about how markets are moving up in the region at how things are doing as we wrap up the trading week. Looks like it is going to be on a good note the hang seng up about. 6 . Th a state of emergency has been extended in france after the terror attack in place which killed 80 people.
