That is ahead on bloomberg west. Apple design guru jony ive has a numeral is the first chief design officer. A new role. Ive mostly shaping the look and feel of apples products and take on current design products new ideas. Ive has two deputies will be taking up the day today managerial duties but what are the implications of this unprecedented move . Joining me is a man who has helped google and twitter come up with design strategies. Thank you so much for joining us all of you. The first time i heard of a chief design officer, not necessarily a common thing to do. I want to start with you what does this really mean . Does this increase jonys power . Doesnt change his level of influence . Isnt it is a recognition of what he has done already. In some ways, it is a role he took over after steve jobs stepped back. In some ways, just like he needed somebody to help him oversee the portfolio of apple products jonys two lieutenants are going to help them. Emily on one hand you think ive is not going to be there for the nittygritty and she needs to be . Is that a loss . And he needs to be . At the same time, the Company Needs influence across all of their different investments, including the office building. Cobie we need someone seeing things more globally. I think investors should be paying attention to a move like this. His influence is going up. Despite the fact that the company is getting so much larger. You think about the influence of apple whether he got this new role or not his influence is going up dramatically. This is a stepping stone towards apple coming out with a whole array of new things. He will have the oversight to make sure all of those harmonize with each other. Perhaps most important one youre looking for is the apple car. Emily tell us about the apple car, what are you expecting . It is clear that apple is hiring seriously in this space. Think about what all the major automobile factories are doing. We are heading towards an autonomous driving world. They are ready have maps ciri they have intelligent cloud and the greatest Industrial Design mind in the world with jony ives. You put that altogether with lowcost manufacturing and you have a revolution in the making. We think that is coming and a big deal, a potential trillion dollar opportunity for apple in 2020. I am not sure i agree about the autonomous car, but i agree about this being an opportunity for apple. You look at car user interface these days, it is pretty miserable. I think everyone at apples they can do a better job. Apple ink they can do a betterthinks they can do a better job. I think jony is looking at that to make an impact. Emily ive still has control, yet on the other hand people are wondering if hes taking a step towards leaving the company . He talked to vanity fair as a summit. Listen to this quote. He is talking about a company that has been accused of copying apples design. Here is his response to that question. Jony you spend 78 years working on something, and then it is copied. I have to be honest, the first thing i think isnt, oh, thats flattering. All those weekends i could have had at home with my lovely family, but didnt. Emily i love that moment. You got a sense of how much he cares about. That he is producing. He cares about the stuff that hes producing. It goes back to my question how much of a loss you think that is . Alder more of a lost and steve having to run two companies at the same time, having his fingers in all of the projects. In some ways jony stepping up to play that role. In a company with thatthat big designers need management to do their best work. Emily these are the two people filling his shoes one on hardware and one focused on software. Who are these guys . Their names have hopped up more as apple has announced things. Things like the release of the apple watch and the new ios operating system. Clearly the capital has been ringing up to the forefront. Ringing them to the forefront. New individuals, fresh ideas now getting their chance to make an impact. If you are right and jony is a bit fatigued. This ias a new role that gives him a potentially greater potential to influence the world greater again. I keep coming back to the car because it is such a great opportunity for them. After reinventing the smartphone pc, and now with the apple watch, this gives him another chance to be invigorated. Emily from a Design Perspective , how easy it is to have such important reigns over to other people . Reins over to two other people . I think jony represents designers is that he is incredibly passionate about what he does and he does not want to get control, because it gives up a direction that he might want to follow. But it is critical that it happened. I agree that with these guys that in order for apple to operate all across all of these things they need a larger role. Emily it seems like jony ives signature is to focus on implicit the to the extreme. Focus on simplicity to the extreme. Is that going to change . No, i think he is just going to look for more ways to do that. Emily using the legacy you think legacy will carry on . Yes i think they will carry on. This is one of the enduring great strenghts of apths of apple. Steve jobs had clarity of thought, he could get people on the same page. If jony ive can do that in plastic design at the very top, in simplistic design at the very top, that is something no one can really match. Emily thank you all. We will be watching the product pipeline. Now to game of cable. Media titan john malone making a comeback in the u. S. Cable industry. It has been 15 years since maloney evoke his number two spot malone gave up his number two spot by selling to at t. Now Charter Communications is offering 55 billion to time warner cable. The bid is way above a previous offer from comcast. Also higher than charters original offer in 2015. Here is their ceo. Time warner is more valuable a company today because they have been successful during this process. Rob and his team continue to keep their eye on the ball to grow the business. We are comfortable with where we are today and are price tag. It is a different circumstance than it was then. Both their behavior and our behavior is different. I am pleased with how it all came out. Emily this deal would catapult charter from the fourth Largest Cable Company to the number two slot behind compact. They would have a 17 million ecig table compares. Basic cable customers. Rutledge says it is all about the internet. Tom the ability to use highcapacity wifi and have roaming capabilities across the cable industry on those platforms, and then ultimately integrating those into the cellular businesses, i think hes in our destiny. I think is in our destiny. Emily up next, foxconn is going to india. Why china is getting too expensive or the for the worlds biggest electronic manufacturer. We will talk to evan spiegel and his next plans for snapchat. Emily a story we are watching the german carmaker dimer has found a friend in china. The german carmaker daimler. Meantime, they are still rivals. Daimler is competing with a handful of companies. Snapchats 24yearold Ceo Evan Spiegel has a image to shake. He has been called cocky, entitled inexperienced, yet his he is leading a startup worth millions of dollars. We ask him why he so rarely does press. He says this this hard, and that some things are not just off the record, but off the fing record. David, i want to start with you, because you wrote the book on mark zuckerberg. You followed him for a long time. He is a guy who did not have the most flattering reputation in his earlier years. What similarities princes do you see what similarities and differences do you see . David i see more differences. Zuckerbergs reputation when he was younger was more undeserved and flowed from a misleading movie that was quite popular. When you have seen the texts from multiple things that evan spiegel has done that make you question his judgment. But he is only 24. People are entitled to make mistakes when they are 24. Only up until recently, we didnt have investors running money at them to make a 14 billion company. It sounds like the article that he thinks that himself. Emily there are a lot of interesting numbers crammed into the armrticle. One being that netjets gets to build that that snapchat that snapchat get to billionwo billion video views a day. There is a lot of confidence and drive in that as well. The game is far from being over. Emily it does not havet matter how much they swear, is that what you are saying . There are a number of successful executives that have swearing as one of their calling card. I will not hold that against them. I am not running a 15 billion company. At the end of the day, the adjusting commentary about what the interesting commentary is that we dont get it. It is a brief new world of new media. Go pro excuse right on in that. Go pro thinks he is right on in that. Evan as a young ceo is in a good position to be a catalyst for change. Emily i want to hit on something you mentioned, which is that we dont know what the future snapchat is. A longtime former facebook executive said in this piece, at worst snapchat is the next generation mtv at best. They are the next generation viacom. David, what do you make that statement . Snapchat is either everything or nothing . David viacom is a good analogy. I think they are and labased company within labased media mindset. Whats that youre doing is creating bite sized media for a bite sized media age. I think the videos they do have in a large number are not the same as facebook and youtube and should not be compared. They are so much more minor, but so vast number. People are using this no question as a entertainment and communications medium. It is quickly changing some quickly before eyes is changing so quickly before eyes, baby boomers are having a hard time keeping up with it. Emily i am a bit younger than you, but i walked into an ice cream shop the other day, and literally everyone was snapped chatting there are ice cream cellular. They the ad rates are actually dropping. At one point, they were charging 100 per 1000 views. What is going on . The landscape is changing very rapidly. They tried something, they tried an elevated price point. It appears that it didnt take. That is not to say they cant try different prices as they continue to grow. We will see where pricing goes ultimately. I will come back and challenge you, it is not important about snapped chatting your favorite ice cream flavor. It ties people together across time and space. It is wonderful. Snapchat is doing something very important in the world. They can go in a lot of different directions, and will be interesting to see the one thing going. Emily i do like ice cream, i agree with you on. David, what about them getting into ecommerce . We asked snapchat about that investment, and they didnt come in on it. But what about ecommerce as a potential revenue stream . David they have to be interested in that. I have been following snapchat with more interest is one of my friends from wall street with their as head of strategy. Wall street went there as head of strategy. He has been deeply involved with companies. The fact that alibaba owns a piece of snapchat is something to keep an eye on in terms of its future. Emily i thought that was also a big endorsement of the company. I want to thank you both so much for joining us today. Now, to growing pains. Foxconn, the worlds Number One Electronics in effect for is looking beyond china or its manufacturing capabilities. In fact, it is only conducting studies in india to kickstart investment there. It is planning 1012 indian facilities, including factories and data centers by 2040. The reason . Keeping costs down. Wages have doubled in china since 2010 and foxconn is facing expenses. Foxconn wants to collaborate with local indian companies. Foxconn isnt alone. Other companies and to expand in india. Coming up, is there any action camera that can take on go pro . We talk to two companies who have held out for that exact reason. Plus amazons german tax bill is about to get bigger. We will tell you why. Emily it is time now for the daily byte the number that tells a whole lot. Todays number is 60 million. That is 16 million. That is how much amazon paid on german taxes in 11. 9 billion in german sales. That is just 1. 3 . For years, amazon, like other tech companies, have funneled most of it sales through luxembourg to take care of the nations lower tax rate. But today, amazon confirms the loophole is closed. They will go through the National Branches in britain and italy, meaning a higher tax bill across the board in europe. Eu competition break leaders say this change competition regulators say they will investigate into amazons tax practices. Think wearable, durable, portable cameras. Go pro consolidated share to 67 in 2014. Can anyone compete with go pro . We sit down with two entrepreneurs who think that they can. Counntour and ion cameras merged just precisely so they have a better chance of taking a bite out of go pro. Gentlemen, thank you both so much for joining us. One of our analysts say that you guys dont have a chance. Why is he wrong . He is definitely wrong. Contour has a very proud history in this market. We were the first wifi camera the first waterproof camera. The combination with ion gives us an enormous comfort committee. In enormous opportunity. When you put the two together we cover the entire price range. Will be in 10,000 Stores Across the 40 countries. We are in a walmart, best buy, all of the major stores. When you think of our ability to manufacture and retail, we have a very good chance. We have fantastic news coming up all the time about new cameras and new roadmaps. Very exciting time for the company. Emily you guys have about a 9 market share. There are other companies trying to get on this action as well. What makes ion cameras at different . You have cameras with 360 degree lenses, interactive viewing what makes yours so special . We go just beyond the ordinary camera. To compete in action sports, but we also go into the home. With the announcement of our snap cam which is the one i am wearing here, we go into the fully wearable mountable tool. It will go beyond that extreme sports enthusiast. Imaging the industry as a whole has lost it female consumer. We feel with the introduction of the snap cam it takes 5000 photos on one battery charge, 2 hours of hd video. The Live Streaming piece is going to be phenomenal. Emily if you can point to the camera you are wearing on your chest . We will take a look added closer. I want to talk about the live broadcast in part. How is that going to work . What kind of audience are you targeting . We are using the phrase social broadcasting. The next emerging layer of social media is Live Streaming. We have done text, social media, things like that. Live streaming is going to be the next emerging layer. This is, in essence, the third lens to a smartphone. It works with your android or iphone. You can live stream whatever you want put out onto the internet. Having the example of a baseball game where my wife is at the game and i am not emily we have to leave it there. Im so sorry, but it is great to hear what your vision is. Ion cameras.
