Tells us all about his companys push into manufacturing. All of that and more over the next hour but first more for my radio cohost, carol massar. Adobe speed the street on earnings. That is a look at some of the top headlines. Thanks very much, carol massar. Oracle is said to be close to a deal to buy the Hospitality Software provider micros systems for 5 billion. The two companies are in exclusive talks. Alex schurman helped to break this. Alex, lets start with you. What is the news that we know. We learned that oracle, which is a very acquisitive company. They are in exclusive companies to buy micros, which is a Software Manufacturer which makes software is for hotels, restaurants. The Hospitality Industry. If you have ever worked behind a desk or the front office, you are looking basically at a variety of Different Software vendors, one of them happens to be micros. A lot of it is in the cloud. They have some cloud applications but they are more of a Legacy Software company. This is something that oracle has tended to steal towards in recent years when they have not enabled to penetrate the cloud industry because of valuations are too high. Theyve been able to roll out some of these old legacy companies. We are hearing the price tag at five point 3 billion or so. Breadcrumbs. What is the connection between breadcrumbs and micros . It was my understanding that the retail space has come under a huge amount of pressure not only for retail bet any kind of software environment. When we founded breadcrumb, what we did is that we were looking at the space. We had a lot of experience in hospitality. Part of that was very frustrating built around these legacy systems which were heavily dominated by micros. It was hardware and software out of date and we thought we could do something that would innovate and improve the situation. We built a new platform and we sold it to groupon. The point that we made about oracles history acquiring things when they cannot penetrate into the cloud space is very interesting. It seems like an odd way to approach this new vertical for them. This is for their strategy going forward. As you want to distribute into more and more markets, your bar becomes higher when youre pinned to her resale network. This is built around system that is problematic software. That is part of the plan. I am interested in this idea of resellers. Oracle has a wide network of resellers. If you dont have the resellers in your back pocket. You cannot jettison them to go to the cloud. I was talking to someone a few minutes ago who has developed a point of sale cloudbased company. He said that this deal is not a good deal for the restaurant or Hospitality Industry in general because oracle, when they tend to sell you goods, will package in software that maybe you dont need. A more nimble cloudbased company will sell you obviously a more uptodate version of what would replace software for a much lower cost. The reseller question is interesting. It goes back to oracles relationships with a lot of companies out there. Where is the direction of this industry going . Are you going to the stuck in a situation where you have a longstanding relationship with oracle . Or, are you able to move towards a competitor and spend a lot less potentially on something that maybe gives you exactly what you need but not everything that you are currently buying. Can you use the analogy of the menu . You get to take all a cart, things you want, when you need them based on your own business experience. Salesforce. Com does that with customer relations. You necessarily dont want to have a fixed price menu. Maybe you dont want the desert, right . Their strategy is basically to say we want to buy our way into a new vertical. That will allow us access to that to sell other things like our crm technology and a whole range of database solutions, some of which are cloud or not cloud. I think that the businesses are looking for the flexibility to choose in an ad hoc fashion. To their credit, where micros has a good foothold and one that will be hard to penetrate for smaller competitors and for a newer crop of competitors is in this very large enterprise space. They need a lot of mobile infrastructure, the ability to push things from the top down and a very complicated structure. You will not see a shopkeeper or even a breadcrumb in touring that space for some time. What you will see is a lot of traction coming from these smaller players. It will put pressure on the bigger players to innovate or get pushed out of the way. As you move into new markets, say places in asia or africa, micros is seen opportunity but a lot of vendors are saying i can run a system on my ipad or i can run a new infrastructure with retailers and hardware over here. I will dip my toe in. It is chipper. My thanks to alex schurman. Coming up, we look at the purchase of a solar panel maker. He will speak to Anna Sophia Robb and to find out what it takes to become a hollywood star. This is taking stock on bloomberg. What do you get when you mix a bear and a movie business . Annasophia robb is a collision and Movie Actress with credits such as trolley and the Chocolate Factory and soul surfer. It is almost like king kong, though not quite that way. Tell me about true spark and what you are doing teaming up with david. He started this Incredible Organization and it basically builds character building films into afterschool programs. These are teaching moral lessons like integrity, honesty, friendship. And we bring this to the boys and girls clubs, afterschool allstars. Kind of explain, they find role models within these films to aspire to be like them. What makes it a good film. Had a jamaica transition from the fruit and bear fund and being an investor to been involved in the movie industry . This was a charity i thought about over 14 years ago when i had younger daughters and i felt like they were such treasures and they were not really absorbed by kids. I actually went out and financed soul surfer which people thought it was crazy to do. It was a movie which sony got behind. Annasophia robb played the role of a girl that lost her arm to a shark attack when she was 13. She came back incredibly. The next year she ended up coming fifth place in the national contest. The next year, she won a contest. The overwhelming adversity that she showed and her work ethic. Her face and how she prospered. Shes still one of the top role models in the world today for overcoming adversity. This would be the kind of movie that would be part of the program. What other movies are available . What are you looking to showcase . One of my favorites is freedom writers with hilary swank. We have a lot of sports films. It is about coming together. Teambuilding, overcoming adversity. Could you identify based on your own career . You started acting at a very young age. You want a big contest. That must be someone else. What did you learn from going through the process of selecting this movie . I was trying to base my decisions off of a strong story and strong characters. I always crack the character arc, how did they change from the beginning, the middle, and the and and how does this character grow. It goes from generation to generation. Kids can watch and i can show my kids and i will be proud of it. What are some of your favorite movies that will be part of this . October sky is one of my favorites because it is encouraging kids to receive science. Another one is great debaters, in pursuit of happiness. All of us are great. But how do you obtain these rights . Is a big day because we now have five significant movie studios that are behind us. We dont have all of them yet but there is actually an exemption to show these movies in schools, with the curriculum, and with an there. We dont have all of the studios behind us. Who are the big five . Paramount, fox, lions gate, warner bros. , and also miramax. Are you looking for any movies that are on the list but are not currently . Soul surfer is not on the list. We have a very extensive Movie Selection committee that includes a couple of hollywood producers as well as a phd educator any names that we would recognize . Yes, mark ciardi. The widow of tom the father of imagine schools are on our Movie Selection committee. We are giving soul surfer a time to germinate before we bring it up to the committee. What about a way way back . I think that would be great. Can you tell us about making that movie . I had a great time. It really started with the script. I read it a couple of years ago, maybe even longer. The story stuck out. It was so on point. I remember when we got to shooting, the writer directors of the film were just hilarious. They work so seamlessly together. The cast is so strong. It was a really fun experience for me. Overall, just a really strong story, quality story. David tice, lets talk about a fun experience when it comes to investing. The market levels that people do not expect so far this year. Good performance last year. What do you think is ahead . I have a bear outlook. I believe in the school of economics. I believe that you are just pumping air into this market, we are inflating assets through quantitative easing. I think it is a full snare and, i think it ends badly. It is hard to say when. The price of gold will go up a lot. Are you invested in gold . Im not sure at the market by him heavily invested in gold. But congratulations. David tice and annasophia robb. Your Social Security, your 401 k plan. What you want to know about your future . You will want to meet the chief of alternative assets. This is taking stock on bloomberg. Americans leave as much as 100,000 or more in lifetime benefits on the table. Married couples can miss out on as much as a quarter of a million dollars. For answers and details as well as a new Social Security service, i am joined by an investment strategist. Financial engines is the largest in good pendant registered adviser in america. We were started about 18 is ago by bill sharp. The idea was to create Services Using technology to help americans with 401 k plans figure out how they should invest. Theyre able to input their own individual information and then get some kind of guidance or response so that they can make better decisions. We work with the record keepers, people like fidelity, vanguard. We are automatically connected to those systems. We do give specific recommendations for which funds you should buy, which you should sell. In some cases, people say, i dont want to deal with my 401 k at all. Can you manage it for me . There has been some issues with 401 k s moving into iras. There was a great article in bloomberg today. Something we see a lot in the industry. People that spent their life saving in their 401 k plans, they retire, they stumble upon a broker, tell them to move all of their money into a set of proprietary funds, charges commissions, very high fees. Employers want to make sure that all of those life savings arent squandered by some brokers. You mentioned life savings, some people look at Social Security as a form of her time in savings. They have to make choices about when to apply for Social Security, how to do it, how to do it perhaps in conjunction with a partner. It is far more complicated than most people think. 75 of people start collecting it when they retire. What they dont realize is that if they waited longer, they could make a lot more money. How do you and your spouse both make this choice to maximize the amount of income that they get from Social Security . If you use some of your 401 k , you could get well over 100,000 by claiming the right way but it is complicated. There is more than 8000 different combinations on how a married couple can claim Social Security. Tell us about the service of that you can use some of this information and really compute when to take Social Security . We are connected with about 8 Million People by working with the employers. We have been thinking about how much you should put in, how much you should invest. It turns out for 60 of people, 75 of their Retirement Income will come from Social Security. We have linked Social Securitys and 401 k together so that you can use this to make more from Social Security. It is an Online Service that you can go through. You can talk to an independent advisor. We can show you how to make more. And make good decisions about your retirement. The decision they make is the most important decision that they will make. I want to thank you for making time with us. Coming up next, i will speak to the chief executive of solarcity. We will find out what it is doing in the manufacturing industry. That is next. This is taking stock on bloomberg. I am pimm fox. Solarcity announced it is expanding into manufacturing with the purchasing of a manufacturer. They are backed by elon musk. I am joined by the chief executive, lyndon rive. Tell us more about this announcement. What exactly are you doing . What we are very excited about the announcement. We further voted to integrate the company and provide actual annual manufacturing. The key thing about Panel Manufacturing is that you have to get a technology you can scale to be cost competitive. The technology we chose as high efficiency at a low cost. Eventually we will be able to install solar at a lower cost than fossil fuel. You will be making these solar panels in china. Why in china . We will be manufacturing these facilities currently planned in new york. I thought that the company that you are acquiring, doesnt it have production facilities in china . Yes, it has a 32 Megawatt Facility in china. What we are planning on building out, this is a gigawatt facility which makes it one the largest in the world. This is from new york. Beyond that, we will be building out more capacity in the tens of gigawatts size and that is the plan for the u. S. Why would you be building these facilities in the u. S. When they already exist largescale soli manufactures already are producing these panels for less cost than you can make them knew . That is not correct. We will be able to make high efficient models at a price at or below the standard efficiency model. The key things to know is that the energy cost is lower and we have high automation so that this is not as big a requirement and they dont have any transportation costs. There is massive working inventory from getting from china to the u. S. We dont have that cost. We will be doing this for less than . 36 per kilowatt . Will be focusing on the cost per watt and combined with our Operational Efficiency and hardware, you look to the entire value chain. Combined with the value chain that we have incorporated so far, we think it will have the lowest cost per install kilowatt hour in the world. That means you would then buy less of the current panels from your existing suppliers is you would be building them in the u. S. We definitely would building them in the u. S. If you look at our growth curve, our own manufacturing capacity will not be able to keep up. Our relationship with our existing partners will actually expand. We will end up buying more products than we have in the past. What is the current estimate for the price tag for this manufacturing facility . Acquisition itself was roughly 200 million initially, 166 or so in staff and about 34 in cash and assumed liabilities. The components are another hundred 50 million based on cost and volume targets. Together, it is 350 million. Where does the money come from to build these manufacturing facilities in the u. S. . We look at partnerships, the state helping to support that growth. We will have to raise initial capital. Is that something that you would do as a part of solar city or would that be a separate company . No, that would all be part of solarcity. Give us an update as to the installed base using the solar city model. If you look at the history of the company, we have continued to vertically integrate. We vertically integrated our installations. Then we vertically integrated our financing, then we integrated mounting hardware. This is the most competitive in the market space. This allowed us to increase our market share. This is vertical integration to reduce the cost of energy. Have you spoken to elon musk about this . Was very involved in this decision. It turns out into simple math. If you believe that at some point we have to get a fossil fuel. We cannot keep on burning fossil fuels. What are the steps that need to happen . If you assume that the goal is 40 by 2050, whatever number you want to put in place, then you work backwards. What is the capacity needed to achieve that or the cost target . In order to achieve that number, we would the industry would have to deploy 400 gigawatts year starting now. We are significantly behind. The only reason we are not at that capacity is because there is a structure we need to meet. As you ramp up manufacturing, you cross that cost curve. Once you cross that, it is essentially infinite. Is there a specific date at which that takes place . This occurs every single year in different markets. If you look at the u. S. , there are the multiple energy in every utility or state. California would be a good example. Is the first that we have crossed. The first step we have to achieve is to provide the same solution with a 10 federal tax credit instead of 30 . We have to meet that deadline in 2017. With the initial factory that we will be deploying, the gigawatt fact or he, this is the initial small factory. We will be able to hit that first cross curve of being able to provide the same product that we provide today with a 10 federal tax credit instead of 30 . The next is to do it with no tax incentives. Then you have to start looking at the markets, can you deliver energy where there is no tax incentive but youre just competing against fossil fuels . Then you start going down the fossil fuel list. Diesel is easy onetwo knockout. Eventually get down to coal and natural gas. We will cross the point many times over the next five or 10 years. Was i want to thank you very much. I want to thank you very much, lyndon rive, the solarcity chief executive. The worlds first sneaker pawn shop is open and harlem. Chase reed and his father opened the store together and they are joining me now. Great to have you here. I want to start with you, tell us the basics of how the store works. The basics is basically you can come in and you can pawn your sneakers, customize, refurbish, put them on consignment. Anything involving sneakers, you can come in and do. Lets say that someone has a pair of sneakers but they would rather have the money. They will come to you, you will look it up and see the price point that would make the most sense. Then what happens . They stay there on consignment . We give someone 90 days to come back and give their sneakers. We are not interested in keeping kids or dolts sneakers. The point of them is to get quick cash to get a metro card, for college, school books, anything. What we do is we take that and give them the opportunity most kids dont have valuable things. What they do is have thousands of dollars worth of sneakers. They can bring in their sneakers, pawn them. You talk about having 1000. Lets say somebody walked in and have crown jewel lebron, what would that go for . They are very highend. This is like a luxury sneaker. This goes for about a thousand dollars. A thousand dollars . These are luxury sneakers. What makes the value is how a squeeze of are. That is what makes them very highend. If we were to look in the closet, would we see a lot of these . At one time, you would have seen 30,000. That was the original inventory. Now that he has his own store and business, he is probably down to one pair. What are some of the most popular speakers that are being pond right now . You have like the jordan you pretty much have anything. You would be surprised at the sneakers that people have across this country. They were never worn, they are just sitting there. We get women, men, kids. We get the stories of people saying, wow, i can finally bring my sneakers in and get cash for them. On their sneakers in Poor Condition that also commend the separate prices or they have to be pristine . Most of them have to be like crisp. Basically, brandnew. However, we do take certain sneakers depending on the value of them. We were probably take it. We will take it over some peoples needs. We need to know how to bring the sneakers back to life. What about if lebron james actually wore the speakers or someone from the san antonio spurs. What happens if they have been used in a playoff game or a and ba . That is just what we will be looking for. We got many sneakers that came in, people say, you know what, im not going to get any money for them. Lets hope these figures and given to people, the young kids that are playing in a basketball tournament. Some of cannot afford the sneakers. We have a business that allows us to take sneakers and give them to kids who now can go on to parks and play ball and sneakers theyre getting from and ba players and athletes. Which is have that, this is a new program that we just started in the store. Congratulations, maybe it will help them with the game. We want to thank you for joining us. Coming up, 3d printing goes to space. We will tell you about a project that allowed the International Space station to make its own parts and tools and it can do it 250 miles above the earth. The Family Business includes ice cream, you will meet the president next. This is taking stock on bloomberg, i am pimm fox. We talked about the growing demand for 3d printers. We have a story about a 3d printer that is out of the world. It is designed to print parts and tools in space. Joining us is michael chen, the cofounder and chief executive officer of made in space. Tell everyone about made in space and why you are sending a 3d printer to the International Space station. These days, it is no mystery that it is difficult to get things to space. We have astronauts up there on the space they should really for a very extended time. A very big challenge to get things to them. You have to send them on rockets that are very expensive, difficult to use. We are going to be able to almost instantly put things in space, once we have the final down here, we can send it up, hit a button, and put things on the space station and a matter of minutes and hours. There is a glovebox that you had to build and create in order to make all of this happened. It was not billed by us but something provided to us as a facility that is already on the space station. This is called the microgravity science glovebox. This is designed for Technology Experiments like ours where they can safely test new technologies before they can be used in their space environment. We are really looking forward to going up here and a matter of months. Was there any special preparation for the 3d printer to survive the trip into space . Yes, there was a lot. When we started the company, our original land is that we saw the benefit of having 3d printing in space. We did not think that were going to create our own 3d printers. As soon as we started testing them, we realized that that wasnt going to work. There was no printer out there that was fit for the job so we ended up designing our own printer completely from scratch that is able to withstand all of the loads we were going to put on it when it goes into space. Are there any specific tools or parts that you can describe for us that you know will be made by this printer . It will come in handy in so many different situations. If you follow the 3d printing, or it becomes Common Knowledge that whenever you have one, it is useful. School, lab, 3d printers are permeating. At the end of the day, you dont know what you will need until you need it. The ability to have it instantly is amazing. Multiple will be familiar with the apollo 13 story where there was a sudden emergency and in order to save the crews lives, they had to jury rig a solution where they had to fit a square peg into a round hole. If they had a 3d rig like ours, they would have been able to fix the problem a lot faster and a lot more safely. He had a friend of ours design a fix for the apollo situation and build it. The crew uses some different tools, screwdrivers, wrenches, cable ties, containers for experiments. The list goes on and on. If you have ever been camping, you know what it is like to be in an isolated remote environment. That is where our device will come in handy. We look forward to the august launch. Mike chen, the chief science officer of made in space. Ice cream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. The story behind yuengling coming up. In 1920, yuengling brewery branched into the ice cream business in order to survive prohibition. They have relaunched and the fourth generation president David Yuengling joins me now. 1920, you have to branch out into ice cream. Now, you are going back into ice cream. What made you decide . We stopped making ice cream in 1985. At that point, had an opportunity to continue with the business but decided not to. I spent 30 years in the computer business. Over the last two years ive had a couple of people, actually my partner came to me couple of years ago and said, had he ever thought about bringing the ice cream rand back . We reached her should for a couple of years and finally we decided to pull the trigger. Did you select any specific flavors in order to do the relaunch . Leslie looked at what was popular and then we decided to take some of those flavors and decided to mix in some new flavors. You have capsules and some of them. We also have the black and tan. We also have a Chocolate Fudge brownie. Where they made . Where is the factory . What citizen pennsylvania, just outside of my home town. What characterizes this particular ice cream . Our ice cream is allnatural. We just have basic ingredients in it. It is also very high quality. Very little overrun, which is the amount of air in it. It ranks with some of the better products on the market. What about distribution . We are in most Major Grocery stores in 10 states. We go from New Hampshire down to the tip of North Carolina and as far west as ohio and east to new jersey. What kind of production levels are you looking for . Well, when we first put our projections together, we looked at very basic levels of production, how much ice cream that we have to sell in order to keep it in the grocery store. Since then, those projections have pretty much and blown out of the water. We are evaluating it. You are making all that you can. At this point, yes. No beer in the ice cream . No beer in the ice cream. Well done, we want to thank you for sharing your story with us. David yuengling, the president of yuengling ice cream. Thank you for taking stock. I am pimm fox. Good night
