Haidi and it is just past 8 00 a. M. Here. This is daybreak australia. I am haidi lun. We are two hours away from the open of asias first major market. Ramy it is after 6 00 p. M. In new york. I am Ramy Inocencio. We will be setting you up for the asiapacific trading day. Good to see you here. A quick recap of how the markets closed friday here in the United States. They hugged the flatline, but day. Were harder during the investors worked hard to suggest what was happening from the u. S. To syria and what was happening out of florida. They will get more from president xi and president general trump. Haidi it was towards the end of the week where politics took central states. You did see the kneejerk reaction in markets in asia as well in terms of the meeting, but that gave up gains. Love look at the week, because it is big in terms of doing back to data. We have seen lots of details to paint out the macro picture from china and also on your side of the world to better flesh out the jobs numbers that are such a big mix. Markets trading in asia, we have kiwi stocks down, the kiwi dollar 39. 37. The aussie stocks will be in a bear market, so that will weigh on the miners that are in the australian index. We have future is looking to open up 0. 25 . 75. 98. Sie dollar that has taken a bit of a beating in the oil price. This is what we are looking at in terms of the commodities picture. Gold giving up some of those we saw in the wake of the u. S. Cruise missile strike into syria on friday. We are looking at 1256 when it comes to gold, and crude will be interesting because we had that gain in the back of the syrian strike, but we are going into the opec meeting in may, where there is concern that cuts have not gone as planned. You can see the pummeling the Iron Ore Price has taken down 0. 6 . So they will be enjoying their moment in the sun. After you caught up with first word news. Egypt has declared a state of emergency after suicide bombers entered egypt and killed more than 40 people. The attacks have been claimed by the islamic state. They targeted Palm Sunday Services with the deadliest. Ssault in at least three years they came a week after trump praised egypts fight against terrorism. This speculator is under right investigation. The news was posted on the website over the weekend with a few details. He is the former chairman of the bank, who resigned to head up the insurance regulator in 2011. Violation of discipline is generally meant to mean corruption. J. P. Morgan said home prices in hong kong are close to a peak and unsustainable. They said price rises have outpaced city gdp growth since 2009, and any shot could trigger a tightening of the system and trigger borrowing costs. Buyers have been using all of their assets and leveraging their homes as collateral. And this company has pulled most of the service at his request. The albums were available on spotify, meaning only collaborations with Singer R Kelly were listed on the profile. Jayz wanted to give up a greater streaming revenue share, more than half of all music sales in the u. S. Now. Global news 24 hours a day, powered by more than 2600 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries. This is bloomberg. Roslyn. Hanks for that, rosalind in hong kong. The two largest economies have had their first is to face meeting at a success to fight despite anticipation it would be a conflict. This was overshadowed by the development of the u. S. Airstrike into syria which took place in the middle of the dinner between president xi and latet trump early last week i should say. Lets get the details are we have Tom Mackenzie who has been following this. But it did not really take anything off the box. That is fair to say. Expectations were set pretty low heading into the meeting, and wisely so. We did not have any grand bargains or big deals between these two leaders, but if you look at the lead up to this, the tensions and rhetoric we had heard from trump including whining about china raising the u. S. , the fact that came out of this saying friendly things seems to be a success, a win. We heard xi jinping say there is 1000 reasons to make the u. S. China relationship work, not a single one to ruin it. We heard positive words from trump as well, but there were no details or deals on things like trade or economics, or the geopolitical tensions that exist. They have agreed to 100 days of talks on trade and to set up a Negotiation Panel overseen by the two president s, which is seen as actually moving the relationship higher. That seems significant. It will involve both cabinets on trade and cybersecurity and a bunch of other topics as well. President xi is leading up to his party congress, a critical Political Year for china, said his focus coming off of this is looking strong, like he was in control. Yes, the syria strike overshadowed his meeting, but from was peoples perspectives in china, it was a success for president xi. One mistake undermines the airstrike, how easy it is for trump to change his position. That message will have been digested as well by the chinese that he can you turn on some of politicsions visavis at the least. But this is seen as a win for the chinese. The grandchildren of a granddaughter of trump were reciting some chinese poetry. Haidi and a lot was speculated that this move into syria by not the normalng message to president xi about americas intentions were capabilities when it comes to north korea. That means they remains a key aria. Area. Tom we have seen those tensions ratchet up again. There was an Aircraft Carrier being diverted in the last day or so towards north asia, no specific location, but the u. S. Navy saying it is being diverted to protect American Assets in the region. North korea does remain the number one threat, and the head of the National Security council under trump saying this is a rogue regime. We have heard that again. The u. S. Wants north korea to step away from the nuclear program. That is clear. They say they can look at talks if that were to happen, but we are a long way from that. It is so central to kim jonguns power and strategy and focus, it is central to him. The idea of walking vaccines farfetched at the moment. China apostasy talks between all the parties involved. Once to see talks between all the parties involved. The u. S. Does not have a Clear Strategy on north korea. Syriaa and the strike, and a strike, such a different message with the artillery barrage it could unleash on se oul. There is no clarity on what the chinese and u. S. Positions are and whether they can get close. Ramy thank you very much, reporting from beijing. And here in the United States, there is a slow in the u. S. Jobs growth. It has been showing off by many as the u. S. Jobs rate hit a 10 year low, but it will be taken into account by the fed. Kathleen hays is here. Job growth was weak, but the Unemployment Rate fell to 4 . Kathleen lets look at the payroll, because that is what got peoples attention. It was 8000, though there was a forecast for 180,000. After the report two days before, some people raised their forecast. Across the board, if you look at the drop 222, you see below 9000. The blue line is the sixmonth moving average, yellow is three months. They are all pointing down. This is runner one of the reasons why one of the bond kings said it was that report. It is a week report. The numbers are much less than expected, perhaps the beginning , buttrend as jim suggested the Interest Rates themselves are already very, very low, and i would not expect Something Like this to continue to push. It is coming in the curve with the absolute level of interest rate. Kathleen you look at that and that the Unemployment Rate, what a day of conflicting headlines. That is a 10 year low, and the labor force participations aid at a healthy rate. A lot of people left the labor force. Bloomberg, you can see you have got the on implement rate going down to 4. 5 . Good news with the participation rate, hate has risen. All of that it has risen. There was bad weather. There was a near blizzard in march. People cannot get to construction jobs, manufacturing jobs, but that is one big reason why people say it is just whether the weather. It will shrug off next month. So neither side is impacted. How can the same report send across different signals . Kathleen now we will look at the bureau of labor statistics, because there are two different surveys. The Establishment Survey is people who own companies send an online form and ask you, how many people work for you . The laborher one, department called people at home. We have a set sample Thomas Muller though, 50,000 or less. The payroll is like 400,000. This is how they told the Unemployment Rate. Are you working, are you looking for a job . Totally different data set. I dont want to compare apples to oranges, but it is much more volatile. That is how you have such different readings. One more thing, q1 gdp. After the report, the atlanta fed which tracks q1 gdp went down to 0. 61 . That is the concern. But until you have a weak First Quarter when it comes to growth, that is the concern of the fed. Haidi all right, and the question is, what we care about, does this change the trajectory for how many hikes we get from the fed . We will be posing that question to the fed president. He will be joining us here on daybreak asia, from here in melbourne where he is speaking at a conference. That is that 10 past 9 00 eastern australia time, 7 10 in the evening in new york. Ramy and we will unpack the latest trade data from japan when it crosses the bloomberg. Haidi that is right. And we will look at the big one, the chinese economy. Jamie dimon. Th still ahead, we hear from the ford ceo on why the u. S. And china to tread carefully when it comes to trade. Ramy and why north korea could back both beijing and washington into a corner. Hear from a strategic consultant. This is bloomberg. Right, we are looking at a pretty nice day when it comes to sydney, but there is positivity when it comes to australian start of trading, up 0. 2 . Expect the miners to come under pressure with iron ore in a bear market, pressure coming down with the aussie dollar as well. Im haidi lun. Ramy i am Ramy Inocencio. You are watching daybreak australia. And no more on the meeting of the president s of the u. S. And china, hailed as a success. And we have the senior director at outright stonebridge group. Albright stonebridge group. No trade deals, nothing on north korea. So what was the success . This is not a surprise. Your correspondent earlier said there were no box is checked. That is correct. This gave a chance for the two president s to establish some kind of connection and to layout the priorities for the relationship and establish some kind of continuity in the relationship. The last month leading up to this, it had been rough, a few rough months for the u. S. China relationship, but this is back on the positive setting. So that was good. This,i have to bring in because we were talking about xi jinping and trump, and we shifted to the middle east with syria. How does the syria strike impact the relation . Anka nobody truly knows unless you were in the trump inner circle whether this was meant to be a signal to the chinese, but that is irrelevant. In china it is seen as such. The chinese were likely reassessing their thinking on trump and their patients clock in terms of trump. Press, the Chinese State run media has been negative talking about the syria strike. I think they are concerned. This is meant to be a single signal on north korea. The Korean Peninsula needs bilateral cooperation to resolve this issue. Nothing will move forward unless bosch washington and beijing work together. There will not be a grand bargain or some kind of magical wand strike to make it work. It requires some kind of substance consistent, bilateral diplomacy for the countries to work together, otherwise we are in a disconcerting situation. Ramy i want to dive into the bloomberg terminal and show the ectr function. This is the trade flow with north korea to its biggest trading partners. China is well on top, 6 billion in the last year. We know that china and north korea are the strongest of allies. It does not have much, but doesnt this striking from syria raise any chance donald trump to do something militarily on the Korean Peninsula as well . We know 90 of north korean trade goes through china, and donald trump has said many times he was open to using unilateral measures. Nobody knows what he means. It does not have to be military. It could be doing secondary sanctions on chinese entities, individuals, chinese banks that are doing business with north korean entities and sanctioning them and chinese individuals. What the United States wants is for china to play ball, and for china to agree, to actually enforce the sanctions they have agreed to in that United Nations and tightened the hold on their banks and individuals who are still doing transactions in north korea. Interesting quite the timing of this, and you say it was irrelevant whether it was intended as a signal to president xi or not, but the fact china is historically, at least in recent years failing on its measures and domestic issues , being strategic about what they engage in outside of china, the South China Sea for example, do you think this would cause them to reflect on what it needs to do to step up the, fill the power vacuum a lot of people have been saying is wide open because of trump . Anka that is a great question, but 2017 will be difficult and sensitive for president xi. As you know in the fall, he will be reselected to a second fiveyear term. Before that, he will make sure he can consolidate power, minimize the chances of any kind of opposition to challenge his influence, so he will be conservative what he wants to do , not just domestically but also overseas. The trumpxi summit is a part of this process, for events meant to solidify his standing as a global leader. You have the summit coming up, then you have the one belt, one road summit in may, then in august the military parade, and finally in the fall, the rexam and. Brick summit. So this is bit meant to boost president xisstanding xis standing prior to the congress. He will be rather conservative and as such would likely not make any drastic moves so he can focus on his own political ability to centralize power at home. This, thatgoing into is why i had thought that would be the Downside Risk for conflict confrontation because you have president s with sensitive domestic situations. Donald trump has had falling approval ratings. President xi does not want to lose face given it is essentially an Election Year for him in beijing. Do you think going into future meetings, that is when the top talk will come . The trade ands currency issue going to come up when they release their currency report, and was this self opening for setting up the tougher talks to come . Anka may be. Nobody knows how they will rule on the team, which is a week aay interestingly, but not lot was accomplished at this time in terms of trade and economics, and it is interesting the secretaries of commerce and treasury mentioned a plan to review the bilateral trade relationship and rebalance somewhat. They will use it as a way to extend this time of negotiation and conversation. It was interesting to watch in the next 100 days what kind of issues they will bring up. Will we seriously address discriminatory policies in china that are making the lives of nmerican businessme difficult . These are worth looking at. Haidi yeah, you wonder if there is recognition of that. There is a pleasure to have your president f that xiPresident Trump meeting, so highly anticipated but overshadowed by political events. Plenty more to come. This is bloomberg. Ramy welcome back. I am Ramy Inocencio in new york. Haidi and im haidi lun in melbourne. You are watching daybreak australia. With it you uptodate with the latest business flash headlines eerie we are talking about samsung selling 550,000 of the new galaxy s 8 and s 8 plus in the next two days since the preorders were announced. In it is 8 30 insync sydney, markets opening 20 uputes time, that we had it 0. 2 when it comes to the aussie markets. Is the bridge, a nice day in sydney, 14 degrees with a high of 90 degrees. They first adopted geeks inflation target in 1990 now widely in use around the world. Global news 24 hours a day, powered by more than 2600 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries. This is bloomberg. Haidi all right, thank you. How marketsok at are excited to open in sydney around the trading week in asia, but here is a quick reminder on how we ended the friday session. It was a workhorse session given the political events, the u. S. Airstrikes going to syria, but in terms of kiwi stocks, down 0. 1 , the kiwi dollar pretty much flat. We are pretty flat today. Australia, we are taking taking a look at pressure when it comes to the aussie oil minors. This is how we ended the day on friday, 75. 01 is where the aussie dollar ended up on the futures up 0. 2 . Little bit of a broader look. We saw again bit up, one of the safe havens, along with gold, the report coming out of the Cruise Missile strike in syria, but that has corrected, holding at 111. We have Central Banks around the region, korea with the Rate Decision also, the rba with Financial Stability review, and property affordability and potential real estate bubble, that will be expected to be addressed, looking out for that commentary. Looking at u. S. Stocks, down 0. 1 and the u. S. Tenure holding at 2. 38 percent. Lets look at what we are looking at as the asian markets get trading underway at the start of this week. Lets go to adam haigh who is with us. We have got politics to the side for a little bit. We are looking at the macro out of china, which is something investors are waiting this week. Awaiting this week. Adam that is it, and we have earnings as well. We have some of the big u. S. Banks, j. P. Morgan, citigroup, so there is plenty from a fundamental perspective as well as the corporate and the continuation of some potential Bank Commentary that we have been getting very you soon over the last few weeks. Over theude used to last few weeks. We have several reporting on monday. , this is weakening off of the layers, and we are seeing a continuation at the start of the asian trading day. Very heavy risk off moves we saw earlier in the trading session on friday, which began the unwind friday afternoon. Looks like it is following through in the first few hours of trading, and fx markets here in asia. The aussies still looking relatively steady. We have home loan data coming up with will be closely scrutinized in an hour or two, but it looks like a little bit of risk. On friday we see largely through that, weaker than expected jobs report. It is reasonably wild for a few gains at the start of the asian session. The fedoking at bonds, said they would start unwinding the Balance Sheet, 4. 5 trillion worth. The bloomberg reporters have been examining why this calm in the bond market might not last. Why is this . Adam yeah, hi there, ramy. Lets look at that calm. Lets look at this chart on the move index which shows how long how low bond market volatility has been. We are at historic lows. It has been smooth sailing. One of the interesting things about janet yellen is she has been very good at suppressing market volatility. Time are entering any where the fed may start streaking their Balance Sheet, maybe before the end of this year. We could start considering whether that changes, and certainly the supply and demand dynamics in the Mortgage Market are changing as that Balance Sheet starts to shrink. It starts to change the dynamic in terms of what Mortgage Securities are in the market, so that may change all agility in the shortterm. Rise will be something we keep a close eye on. It is tricky for bond traders that have gotten used to this era of low volatility, so there is always some surprises when that setting growth changes. It may be tough times that we get into for fixed income desk. Of course, we will do well from an increase in volatility from a trading point of view is that picks up. And the revenue side of the Investment Bank trading does pretty well. It is not all bad news. Ramy it will be interesting to see if the nonperformance payroll has any impact in terms of moving this forward in terms of unwinding. Thank you. The u. S. , Bank Earnings and direction will be a big focus in the week ahead on wall street. Su keenan has the outlook. Su it is a shorter week, so there is not as much activity, but given the attack on syria, there could be a sleeper week. Looking at the close, we see how we closed on friday eerie where do we go from here . Thanks will be reporting firstquarter earnings. That clearly could send the market one way or the other. They will be led bys 80 group citigroup, Morgan Stanley if we go to the bloomberg, 5996, if you have it, their ago. Focus. Laryen will be in we saw the dollaryen trading at a midpoint. If that continues around 112, fairly strong signal for the yen. Ramy kathleen and i were talking about mixed signals out of the jobs report. What are we holding on to the market direction . We will have that jobless claims in tandem as well, so we also have consumer prices. They are slightly unchanged. We have the Confidence Index and data. We saw sales in the u. S. , a lot of landmarks to wrap up a table worst quarter while things were unchanged. Those are key reports. We also have a major auto show in new york, the International Auto show. This will give us a lot of the trends. It is exciting, big divers showcase, fast cars, big cars, but this is on the heels of disappointing sales for the entire industry. 705, here is atb sign of banks trading off more and more auto loans, and this is something that will be a highlight for investors as we hear all of the earnings from the banks as well. How big is it, how much of a threat is it to banks and the Auto IndustryGoing Forward . Haidi as you say, it is a shortened week, but it is also the first after the first airstrike ordered by President Trump into syria. Are we expecting the impact in terms of generating volatility . Know traders went home with caution. They did not want to be short given that it could escalate, the markets could go off, but 05, it is already known the markets had a blitz reaction, but when you look at commodities as a whole, they came back to where they were by the end. A little bit of equilibrium. Oil got a pop. It got second weekly gain after the attack, up as much as 2. 5 friday, 52, the highest level in new york and london. That is an issue where it goes from here. The opec meeting will create a come down. I dont know if we have that chart. There we are. You see oil ended the day. And it was a rather dramatic week and what would otherwise be a dull weekend at the box office. Boss baby, and animated movie, stole the show. It was disputed by 21st century fox, took in 23 million, beating the smurfs. It was also a battle with beauty and the beast. Alec baldwin, a popular actor these days, is the voice of the animated baby who takes on a rather difficult ceo. Ramy good stuff. I will have to watch it. It is on my list. Going electric, we will year from the ford ceo on the drive into china. This is bloomberg. Ramy i am Ramy Inocencio in new york. Rosalind i am haidi lun indi im haidi lun melbourne. Lets get a check of the business flash headlines at this hour. We have the Security Training company june on trading with a massive ipo ring. Y have shares at 15 84 15. 84, that would be 2 billion u. S. Dollars from the first offering. They are offering over 100 billion shares, and they are trading on tuesday. This could help guotai junan with a 37 profit fall at the core brokerage business. Watching shares of hyundai and kia motors after they announced recalls of 1. 2 million u. S. Vehicles to check engine assemblies your the andings, hyundai made two 2. 4 four cylinder engine could prematurely rest of. Rust. They would not estimate the cost. Haidi boeing is delivering two 777 jets. They had been destined for turkish and lines, airlines, and now they are going to iran air. The first one will be delivered next year under a tentative deal announced in december. Boeing declined to comment on the iran air reports. Ramy ford has big ambitions in newa as it searches for growth. It is planning to introduce pickup trucks and make 70 of its vehicles fully or partly electric by the year 2025. Tom mackenzie asked the ceo about the plans and how the meeting between the president s would affect automakers. When you have two leaders to meet facetoface, they become people to each other, so that basis i think, and reading the reports from the meetings, that is a Firm Foundation to then go off and make concrete advances to strengthen the ties between the two countries. There is huge, enormous, mutual ties between the two countries from a trade standpoint, and we have to tread carefully on that because the economic the basis of the overall relationship. I am glad to see both leaders meeting early on in their 10 years. Sector isuto something where china could make steps to level the playing field. Whether that is joint ventures or the terrorists, is tariffs, is that possible . Mark china is a very important market, and tangible reports and openings are needed because the thing is, how do you make sure you decrease policy uncertainty, boost business confidence, but also create unequal opportunities for each nation . If i sit on the manufacturing counsel, and wish share the same objective we share the same objective. Tom what are your opportunities in terms of sales, and how will that be relied on the relaxation of the rule between syria and the . Mark less than 2 is pickup trucks, and though without that it is the fourth largest in the world. The government is thinking about changing some of the restrictions, which we think would grow the customer appeal for pickup trucks. A couple of provinces have done that already. And the research we have done and the orders on the new f150 raptor is a huge opportunity for us to continue to build the ford brand in china and to Grow Business in china. Tom and you want a fully electric vehicles by 2025 and what investment is required to get there, and what are the means for reengineering the supply chain . Mark we see an opportunity to build electric products. That is why we are laying out a compelling electric fixation electric fixation plan for the viewers. But we have government regulations that are also encouraging the industry to move that way. This is all part of the announcement we made last year of investing 4. 5 billion between now and 2022 ad electrifying projects to vehicles around the world. 2020 to addd electrifying products to the vehicles around the world. Tom is there a slowdown . Mark we have seen a plateau at a high level. So we want about 17. 7 Million Units in the u. S. , down slightly from last year but at a relatively high level. We are seeing more conservative competitive consumer pricing, but we are prepared with a great lineup and keeping cost structure in line and staying in focus with satisfying customers. Tom what is the main drag, the Interest Rates, the fact that incentives have reached their limit . , treess we plateau cannot grow forever, but 17. 5, 18 million unit industry is fairly satisfying pyramid satisfying. But you could squeeze customers out of the marketplace. I do not view it as a crisis. We will manage carefully and discipline. Tom do you envisage adding production lines in the next 12 to 24 months in addition to the one already been announced . Mark we want to make sure we are very disciplined and match production to demand, and we will continue to do that, and the investments we announced our about investing in nextgeneration products to satisfy demand. We will be very disciplined in a timeframe for the industry is leveling off. Mackenzie, was tom our china correspondent, speaking to the ford ceo and talking essentially about the impact of these trade tensions between the u. S. And china during lets get more analysis on the subject with our intelligence expert. Something you feel may have been left off the talking tech rhetoric, how much it affects consumers, particularly with the auto sector. I think consumers will be hit the most. If you look at supply and demand of cars, right now with trade , a lot ofretty kosher the consumer today have a lot of choices. Umpteen number of models from makers. , whatsee trade tensions that will do, that will cramp not only demand but also supply of vehicles because there will be huge import taxes potentially, and that will raise a lot of prices of all of the automobiles. That will be out of the range, affordability range, of consumers. So automakers will have to reassess if they want to import or build, and that will take a long time to work out. Haidi what sort of value do you c4 a corporation . Tom was asking about the value train, being efficient in a lot of ways. Do you see valuation for the company and what it means for investment . If you look at the change in the Auto Industry, it is organized chaos. Tensions, thee organized chaos will become unorganized, and we will, we will see the automakers have to supplierso remove around, move plants around, and at the end of the day, it will affect consumers because it will raise cost for auto production and consumers are going to have less and less choices in the marketplace. Ramy looking at the tensions getting ratcheted up were talking about in trade, looking at strategies, how does that change Capital Investment . Steve as automakers shift production around, and it depends on where that production in af we are relocating higher cost area, then we have to increase capital automation. That will reduce cash flow. Ramy looking at one of the promises from president donald trump, he said he would look into scrapping nafta. How might that benefit asia, china in particular . Steve i hope they dont scrap nafta. The u. S. Very competitive in the Auto Industry. If it were not for nafta, we might see a large export markets without nafta,se you increase the cost of supply chain in north korea america, and automakers will have to find elsewhere to produce, and china to be one of those countries. , and has kept china at bay that is why we have seen it vibrant Auto Industry a vibrant Auto Industry. Ramy the Bloomberg Intelligence analyst in hong kong, thank you. One feature we would like to bring to your attention is the interactive tv function, and you find it at tv. Rishaad we are shery we are looking forward to that interview. Bullard is a nonvoter. Is not Economic Data streaming to tighten policy, suggesting no need for further rate hikes this year. We will ask him about that as well as his thoughts on reducing the Balance Sheet. Ramy definitely unwinding the 4. 5 trillion Balance Sheet, something we will go into. But later on we will also speak to the Credit Suisse chief economist for japan in 10 minutes after that. We look at the current japanese accounts, and we are forecasting a surplus, expanding from january to february, ¥1. 68 trillion. We will see how that plays out in 15 minutes time. Data to chinapan data, it is a big week, because we are looking at trade inflation. I will talk to j. P. Morgans chief china economists. Weak payroll numbers give the fed Something Else to think about and may suggest employment stable. Modest gains at the start of a week launching earnings season. President trump and president xi jinping held their meeting a success. Strengthening transpacific ties with china
