In north west england delay plans to reopen to more pupils on monday because of fears that coronavirus is still spreading at a high level there. Hello, and welcome if youre watching in the uk or around the world. And stay with us for the latest news and analysis from here and across the globe. Demonstrations have been taking place across the world, triggered by the Police Killing of george floyd in the United States. We will have the latest from australia, and in the uk. First lets show you scenes from the us where protests are under way. This is the scene in washington, dc. You can see the large avenue which has been populated with protesters. We heard from our colleagues there. There have been peaceful protests. There have been peaceful protests. The camera is zooming where we thought it would do, the northern portico of the white house with Lafayette Park there. The white house has been fortified with fences in recent days. The protesters are protesting in washington, dc which is under the control of a democratic mayor who sympathises with the protesters. On the west coast this is the scene in San Francisco. You can see some pedestrians, it looks like theyre carrying placards. They pledged to hold the demonstration. Walking over the golden gate bridge. Its about 1pm there. Its notjust about demonstrations in San Francisco but also for cargo and philadelphia as long as those demonstrations in washington, dc. Well continue to keep an ion whats going on. Lets have a look at here in london. This is the main avenue next to downing street. There are two lines of Police Officers and the re m na nts of two lines of Police Officers and the remnants of a bigger protest that was held down the street in Parliament Square. It doesnt look like there are more than a few dozen protesters. There were scuffles a couple of hours ago but the protests appear to be tailing off. Its important to say that the larger protest in the day had been peaceful. Here in the uk, thousands of people have gathered in cities across the country, despite warnings to stay at home because of the risk of spreading the coronavirus. The home secretary, priti patel, had urged people not to take part, saying Public Health had to come first. This evening some protesters clashed with police around downing street in westminster. Missiles were thrown at officers in protective gear, as mounted police tried to drive back some demonstrators. At one point, a policeman was unseated and his horse bolted into the crowd. Chi chi izundu has more on todays protests around the uk. They thought just enough people would come to fill Parliament Square. Chanting but this is a movement growing with each protest, not only over the death of African American george floyd last month, after a white Police Officer knelt on his neck, but to highlight that the uk is not innocent when it comes to racism. We are here to unite. Because what we are fighting for is to stop institutional racism. The government had appealed for people to stay away. Cheering we are in a Health Pandemic across the united kingdom. And coronavirus is a deadly virus and of course i would say to those that want to protest, please dont. The regulations are very clear in terms of gatherings and mass gatherings, in particular. We must put Public Health first at this particular time. Organisers handed out masks and gloves and told people to keep two metres apart. But as the crowd grew, space diminished. Its notjust defying the government. Were still gonna be careful. Its to say that actually this is urgent and this needs an urgent action. London isnt the only place taking a peaceful stand. We are all in this together in solidarity. People protested in the streets in leicester. In manchester, an estimated 15,000 people gathered in and around piccadilly square. Im from america, so this isjust a really big deal, to see this impact in the world so far from home. Its actually pretty fantastic. In sheffield, thousands of protesters took the knee. The emblem of this time. This is one voice with one message. Black lives matter. And as thousands marched towards the us embassy, theirs is a hope that theyll be heard and real change can start. Chi chi izundu, bbc news. As the day of protest ends in the uk there is an update from our home Office Correspondent tom symons who says there have been four arrests and black lives matter protest. The body of protest earlier today in Parliament Square was seen to be largely peaceful. As weve been hearing, a big rally is getting under way in washington, following gatherings of tens of thousands of people in britain, france and australia. Our north america correspondent Aleem Maqbool is at the demonstration. Well, for more than a week now, they have been coming out in thunderstorms, in searing heat to this square right in front of the white house, that has now been officially renamed by washington mayor as black lives matter plaza. You can see in huge yellow lettering on the road are the words black lives matter. And they are here today, in perhaps the biggest protest. Demonstrations right around the white house, yes, to commemorate all of those black lives that have been lost at the hands of the police, but also to send a very direct message to the man who lives in that building, donald trump, of course. Well, lets speak to somebody. Excuse me, we are with the bbc. What has brought you out today . What is your message to the president . My message to the president is that i have a say in this country after 31 years of protecting it for him and all others. I have a say. What do you mean protecting it . I protected the country as a military person. I protected it, 31 years of service. And what do you want to hear from him . I want him to stand up like a man and understand that he is no better than i am. He is a child who acts like a. As all these protesters come past us, they are saying, nojustice, no peace. But what steps could be taken to make things better . He doesnt understand and he doesnt want to understand, that is the problem. He is a racist. And hes not afraid to show his racist attitude. He, of course, has said in recent days he has been the best president for black americans, but let me ask you one last thing. How have you felt that the president has said he might use active duty military on the streets . That is not what the military is for. The military is not here to deprive us citizens of their constitutional right to protest, of free speech. If i was the military, even though we are not able to make decisions, i would walk off and take my uniform off. I would. Ok, thank you so much. Stay safe today. Yes, my name is doctor beverly harris. Very nice to meet you, doctor harris, thank you. Well, at the moment all incredibly peaceful, but there has been a big security deployment right across washington that has meant at times flashpoints, violence, confrontation. It clearly hasnt deterred all of these people, who say they are determined that things really do change. Aleem maqbool reporting there and that mural has been painted in letters so big they can be read from space. These are satellite pictures of black lives matter plaza, with those three words clearly visible in yellow letters. The road leads directly to the white house. The mural, which runs for two city blocks, was officially sanctioned by washington dcs democrat mayor, in an apparent rebuke to president donald trump. Im joined now by Tylik Mcmillan in washington and Denise Richards in derby. Hello to you both. Id like to start with you, denise, talking about the protests. I know you will be going ona protests. I know you will be going on a protest. What would you like to achieve . Im constantly talking about the fact that what is happening in the states is awful, what happened to george. Its great to see that people have really pulled together, black, white, eve ryo ne pulled together, black, white, everyone is pulling together for this. But i have to turn this inward and look at whats happening in the uk. Thats where i live and what i have to deal with. The drive has come from the death of george. I tried to take a very holistic view and look at the whole matter in terms of what we can do, in terms of moving it forward. My conversations tomorrow are notjust moving it forward. My conversations tomorrow are not just about the police, its about health and education. Its about those things that form the picture of why we are living in a society where White Privilege in the uk is so dominant, its affecting lives. In the us, obviously george lowe it george boyds death has had a big impact but as you can see from the knees, it had a big impact here as well. What is your reaction to what she was saying . Yeah, i think it brings to light issues though education, health care and minorities owning businesses. This is a broader spectrum of what we see. Its an honour to see solidarity not only in the United States but around the globe, where folks are saying, theyre standing up and speaking truth to power. It speaks volumes. We the United States see people across the globe and are very appreciative because we are in this together. Whats been the impact on you over the last couple of weeks . Being a black man in america, isc realities, i can see the reality that i could be the next george floyd, my Little Brothers could be the next george floyd. It brings the issue to the forefront. This is the issue. 1619, since then, when the first slaves were brought to america, weve seen systems in place that disproportionately affect communities and black people in this country. So here, as we see across the globe, folks are saying enough is enough and standing up and speaking truth to power and demanding action. Folks arent requesting justice, theyre demanding justice. Can you tell us about your life and perhaps some of the struggles or discrimination youve faced . Living in the uk, i smile because i think my first recognition of what racism looked like was when i was ten years old andi like was when i was ten years old and i entered a competition at school. I wanted to apply for the role of snow white in the seven dwa rves role of snow white in the seven dwarves and i auditioned and i didnt get the part and three or four years later when i went back to the school, the teacher told me that it was so controversial, that they couldnt make that decision about having a black snow white. Thats when i realised what life could potentially be about. So as a black person in the uk, ive seen racism directly and indirectly. And ive seen how its broken down individuals, how its destroyed families. And you know, through education, through work and health. But its something that society in the uk doesnt seem to recognise. And thats because its not something for them to recognise because we actually hold the power. The power you hold and wield over us is whats preventing the change. Change that needs to happen is in your hands, not in ours because we dont hold the power. So now were looking at things very differently and its to turn up the volume because how we see it is that, as people, you like our rhythm but you dont really work with our blues and thats where were at. Its time to turn up the volume and stop the softly softly because we been in groundhog day for too long. The government, previous governments have never taken seriously. The world is showing how serious it is and were going to show you what were going to do in terms of making ita were going to do in terms of making it a more level playing field. Gone are the days when we are menu items. Tyler, you were nodding along . Yes, i think she has said so beautifully, that we deserve notjust half a cup but we deserve the whole cup. We are here not asking forjustice, were not here to negotiate justice. Folks are here to demand justice and holding folks accountable. Wed like to see policies in place. We are tired of the apologies and saying sorry, tired of the apologies and saying sorry, we tired of the apologies and saying sorry, we want action. You obviously a young man. Talk to was about the ambitions for own life. A young man. Talk to was about the ambitions for own lifelj a young man. Talk to was about the ambitions for own life. I started at ambitions for own life. I started at a young age and i began working for the reverend al sharpton at the age of 13 and now im 23. 1 the reverend al sharpton at the age of 13 and now im 23. I grew up in a family about social justice of 13 and now im 23. I grew up in a family about socialjustice and being dragged out to these meetings with my family and i saw it as my responsibility, my civic duty as a memberof responsibility, my civic duty as a member of society to speak up when icy something thats wrong, to use my voice when i can see something thats wrong. People need their voices heard. Is there anything that the new generation can learn from your generation . We havent really got there. Weve done some bits to lay the foundation. The reason people of my agent are having to step it up is because the new generation are stepping up and need to be the new voices going forward, so to be the new voices going forward, so weve got to stay with the programme so so weve got to stay with the programme so they get support, whether they are in the states or the uk. Thats what weve got to do. That responsibility falls on organisations like the bbc and i would use that as an example. Because you present us badly, thats how we are presented, we are presented badly. You only give me high salience in response to specific news items, immigration, crime and so what happens is, White Society absorbs the negative energy and that energy is put out and they enact it and thats whats happening now. So its been fantastic that youve called me in. Ive been online programmes over the last couple of days and im taking every single one because it gives a platform but what happens next . What are you going to do next . When you sit down and your meetings, are you going to say that we need to be working harder . We cantjust be doing this now and then because its an issue. Weve got positive story to tell people about us but youre not giving us the opportunity. You just want the negatives. I think its a big time to move on. As black people we have a responsibility, too, and weve got to look at pathways to progress. I was thinking, quickly, the black police association, they put out a statement saying that black britons are grappling with the harsh reality that decades of structural and institutional racism has made us and this is the word that sticks in my mind, fodder. When i think of fodder i think of the food you give to a cow or a i think of the food you give to a cow or a pig on a farm. That institutional racism has made us fodder, not only in the disproportionate use of violence in terms of policing or the effect of covid 19. Im very passionate about this. I have a young son myself and ive got to do my best. Im putting it back on my selves and i hope borisjohnson it back on my selves and i hope Boris Johnson and his it back on my selves and i hope borisjohnson and his people are listening. We are not taking this any more, we are stepping up the action and youll see whats going to be happening. Weve got to take a different approach to life. Thank you so much to you both. Thank you for having me. Black lives matter protestors in the australian state of New South Wales have won a last minute appeal against a court order that tried to stop them from taking to the streets. Demonstrators have focused on the treatment of indigenous australians. Prime minister Scott Morrison warned that protests risked undoing the progress made in fighting coronavirus. A warning shaimaa khalils report contains some distressing images. Black lives matter a day of high tempers and high spirits for protesters in central sydney. Politicians had urged them to stay away, fearing another wave of covid 19. I say to them, dont go. Not because you shouldnt express your view. Find another way to express your view. But that didnt stop them. Im an aboriginal woman so its a subject very close to my heart, and itsjust so nice to see people from all creeds come together for this. I dont want to be a white person who sits by and does nothing, so thats why im here today. In the past three decades, more than 400 indigenous australians have died in police custody, an issue many here say has long been ignored. But with the very public killing of george floyd in the United States, the Aboriginal Community is using the International Outcry to express their own anger. I cant breathe stop resisting. I cant breathe this seems all too familiar. A black man restrained by officers screaming, i cant breathe. These were the last minutes of david dungaers life, caught on camera in a sydney prison hospital in 2015. The inquest into the 26 year olds death found that the officers conduct was a result of insufficient training. But his family has called for them to be prosecuted. Seeing george floyd die in such similar circumstances to her son has been distressing for davids mother. Tears just come from my eyes, and pain came to my heart again. I say, be strong, the floyd family, for we are in pain the same, and we do understand what youre going through. Protesters hope marches like this highlight notjust black deaths in custody but the centuries of inequality indigenous australians have suffered, and that a new found momentum could mean a betterfuture for the community. Shaimaa khalil, bbc news, sydney. A growing number of schools in the north west of england have delayed plans to reopen to more pupils on monday. Its over fears Coronavirus Infections are still rising there. Some scientists suggest the r or reproduction number, is creeping up and may have surpassed one, the point at which the epidemic could take off again. The latest figures released in the uk show that a further 20a people died from coronavirus overnight bringing the total number of deaths to 40,165. Our north of england correspondent, Judith Moritz reports now from greater manchester. Well, here we are, Russell Scott Primary School in very changed times. And its all about welcoming your children back in a safe and sensible manner. Yesterday morning, head teacher Steve Marsland posted this video on his School Website as he prepared to open up to more children on monday. But by the afternoon, those plans were put on hold. The school, told to delay by the local director of Public Health. We want the children in school where they should be but in terms of the health of our community, i salute the decision, that somebody has actually come out and followed the guidance that was issued originally, where if the r level is anywhere near one and the contamination rate rises, looking after the health of the community and our school. Its notjust schools in this area which are being advised to delay their wider opening. Its the same in blackburn and on the wirral, schools are being asked to pause and reconsider. Its all based on the same worry, that the Coronavirus Infection rate is rising in the north west. Theres also a feeling that not all parts of this region are the same and there are calls for more localised information. We still could do with at least understanding whats happening in our localities, and they can take it to a sub regional level. 0k, we might not even be able to go down to a district level but wed understand we need to do and the advice wed need to give, which may be different from the national governments. The governments scientific advisers believe that across the uk the infection rate remains at a safe level. The north wests two metro mayors say theres been pressure on schools to reopen. Tomorrow, theyll call on the government to reassure head teachers that they can stay closed if they wish. Judith moritz, bbc news, denton in greater manchester. The egyptian president Abdel Fatta Al Sisi is calling for a ceasefire in neigbouring libya. His ally, the rebel general Khalifa Haftar is on the defensive after losing control of a key military base to un backed government forces. But pro Government Troops have shown no signs of embracing a truce, launching a fresh offensive against general haftars army. The Oil Exporters group, opec, has reportedly agreed to extend record cuts in production for a month. A deal reached in april between opec members and other oil producers, including russia, was due to expire at the end ofjune. Riot police in the lebanese capital, beirut, have repeatedly used tear gas to Disperse Protesters taking part in renewed Anti Government demonstrations. Crowds threw stones and attacked at least one business. The protesters have denounced the governments handling of a deepening economic and political crisis, which has seen the lebanese currency collapse and unemployment soar. A new image has been released of the duke of cambridge, Prince George and Princess Charlotte volunteering to pack and deliver food parcels. The photograph, taken by the duchess of cambridge in april, shows Prince William and the couples children on the sandringham estate in norfolk in the east of england, delivering food parcels for isolated pensioners in the local area. The duke of cambridge has also been volunteering for the helpline shout85258, which offers support via text message to people in personal crisis. We continue to follow the protests in the uk and also in the United States. You are watching the bbc news. Pubs and restaurants in england expect theyll be allowed to start back up again from july 4th, although theres no date yet for scotland, wales and Northern Ireland. Trade bodies warn most venues will not be viable with a 2 metre social distancing rule still in place. Theyve called on the government to provide more support. Heres our business correspondent, katy austin. Measuring up for a socially dista nt future. Thats two metres. A cash grant and the furlough scheme have kept this 300 year old pub near wigan going through lockdown. Passing by the worlds smallest toilets, which makes two metres very difficult to operate with. Opening up presents new challenges. I suspect if we are allowed to open outside with Table Service only, were ok here. I think the real issue will come when we are allowed to open inside. Two metres, it cant be done. A metres going to be incredibly difficult. Other venues are also waiting for clarity. In england, the expectation is that pubs, restaurants and cafes will be able to start opening up again from lithjuly, and the industry and government are still working together to finalise guidelines on exactly how they can do that safely. Mexican restaurant chain wahaca is planning for various scenarios. Clocks on the walls every 20 minutes washing your hands. Hes expecting trade to be tough. Starting out, its going to be hell. People are not going to come back in their droves. They are going to slowly build up that confidence and its going to take six months to a year. We are anticipating sales being around minus 60 to start with. Mark expects to struggle, whatever happens but customers being two metres apart, no one will make money. Well have one group here and another group there. Some other countries use lower measurements. In france, for example, the guideline is one metre. Trade association uk hospitality says if two metres remains the rule here, the government must provide further support. If we are operating at such a loss and furlough is going to be withdrawn, then its vital that these businesses, which have been cash starved since march, have additional funding to help with rents, in particular, which is the second biggest overhead they are facing, additional grants, where most of the businesses, 75 of the businesses, will not have had a hospitality grant. Many ma ny restau ra nts many restaurants and pubs will not reopen but for those that do, measures designed to keep people safe m ea ns measures designed to keep people safe means that eating and drinking out will be different for some time. Helen willetts has the weather. It felt more like april with blustery wind and showers. Unusually windy for the time of year because of this area of low pressure. A deepening area of low pressure has brought thunderstorms across the south and east and we have more substantial rain coming south. Showers have given some welcome rain for the gardens but they are going to fade in the early hours. The rain moving south as well. The wind is with us but gradually easing but temperatures wont get much lower than five or six but thats quite chilly, first thing in the morning. A lot of cloud coming south on this weather front and some rain. Dry in scotland and Northern Ireland compared to today about showers across england and wales. Quite a keen breeze especially on the north sea coast. Lighter wind and it is going to feel warmer. Dry weather prevails until the middle of the week. Then it looks more uncertain. Bye
