Kashmir gets limited internet but theres still no access to social media. Hello and welcome to world news today. Chinas president , xijinping, has said the new corona virus is accelerating its spread, putting the country in a grave situation. His comments came as officials in beijing confirmed the number of people known to have died from the coronavirus outbreak has now reached 41. China also ordered a suspension of all domestic and overseas group tours, to control the spread of the virus. Our china correspondent Stephen Mcdonell has been to the province of hubei, where the virus was first reported, and sent this report. The approaches to hubei province, like scenes from an apocalyptic movie. Only after a temperature scan can you pass these checkpoints. The unwell are not allowed to travel. Whats more, the lockdown is spreading. Roads out of the infection zone are being closed. So, basically, thats the border that way. The police have told us that we can drive in but we cant drive out, so it seems that this whole province, where the coronavirus first broke out, is now going to be locked down. We cross the border and drive through ghost towns. Instead of Lunar New Year celebrations, people are in survival mode. On the first day of the year of the rat, all these shops are closed, theres pretty much nobody on the street here. This is just one of the towns you come across when you first enter the province, and peoplejust dont know for how long its going to be like this, for how long they have to stay indoors or risk being infected with this potentially deadly coronavirus, which causes pneumonia. Hospitals here have been flooded with patients. There are thousands who are unwell but are not sure if their symptoms mean its the coronavirus. One man inside this hospital speaks to us from his hospital bed. He said he hasnt been told if hes contracted the potentially deadly virus, but hes worried he could catch it anyway from others in his ward. I wish him a speedy recovery and the police arrive, as if on cue. They will not confirm if a provincewide lockdown of 60 Million People is about to start. Plus, local officials want us to leave. So, as night falls, they escort us back across the border. Stephen mcdonnell, bbc news, hubei. Im joined now byjosep jansa, a principal expert at the European Centre for disease prevention and control. Welcome to you. Thank you for being with us. President xi jinping welcome to you. Thank you for being with us. President xijinping has warned the virus is accelerating, what can you tell us about that . The first cases were a little number of cases that were reported, about 41, but as time goes by there are more and more cases and so it is true. More cases have been detected. What is not completely clear as to what extent that is related to a better detection or if there are more cases, so detection or if there are more cases, so it is a combination of both things. What do we know about the virus itself . Is it mutating . So far, no. There is no information about that. What happens with those coronavirus is they are circulating within animals and to a particular time, theyjump to humans and they start being spread among humans. That is the current status according to the information we are managing now. China is a huge country, the authorities seem to be on it quite quickly, certainly compared to various similar cases. Why do think it is proving to be difficult to contain, simply because of the size of the country and the number of people involved . Definitely this is a huge impact. Probably that happening in a smaller country, smaller city we would see a different scenario. Nonetheless there are many uncertainties and many unknowns still in terms of the ways of how the virus is being widespread and the contacts, but regarding your question, indeed the fa ct of regarding your question, indeed the fact of being such a Huge Population and those markets being so mass populated is having an impact on this outbreak. What about the International Aspect of this . We have cases confirmed in france, australia and the us. How alarmed or concerned should Foreign Countries be about this . The fact of more cases being detected in other countries doesnt necessarily mean that we need to raise the alarm is. This is something expected knowing the volume of travellers back and forth for china which is more than 300,000, sol forth for china which is more than 300,000, so i think it is a similar number in other continents. Particularly this time of the year when it is the new year in china, so the fact those cases are being detected in airports or while in the country doesnt necessarily mean that this is widespread and that we need to raise alarms. Good to get your thoughts. Thank you for your analysis. Donald trumps lawyers have been laying out the case for the defence in his impeachment trial in the us senate. Mr trump is accused of abusing his power and obstructing congress. But the president s team says hes done nothing wrong and say the democrats real motive is to undermine mr trumps re election campaign. More now from our washington correspondent chris buckler. As the future of his presidency has been under debate, President Trump has been to davos to meet world leaders, to florida to speak to supporters, and ignored other events in washington to attend a pro life rally. Perhaps thats a sign that hes looking past this impeachment trial and already thinking about drumming up votes for this novembers president ial election. And certainly, inside congress, his legal team have been making a point of notjust defending their client but also using this deeply political trial to attack his opponents, the democrats. Theyre asking you to tear up all of the ballots across this country, on your own initiative, take that decision away from the American People. Democrats delivered a more than 28,000 page record of evidence and their argument, that donald trump abused his power. But the republican majority inside the senate makes it inconceivable that President Trump could be removed from office. What i have learned through all my years in politics, and all my years in life if youre right and you keep fighting for the truth, you will prevail. We would be derelict in our responsibility if we didnt fight for the truth. On twitter, mr trump encouraged people to tune into americas news networks, who have covered every minute of this trial. Although the publicity awa re president is said to be upset that his defence team were given saturday to begin setting out their case. Mr trump calls it a death valley for tv ratings in the states. Chris buckler, bbc news, washington. Since the senate ajourned, mr trump has tweeted, saying that any fair minded person watching the senate trial today would be able to see how unfairly i have been treated and that this is indeed the totally partisan impeachment hoax. Dr Evan Lawrence is an expert on us politics at the university of central lancashire. She also previously worked in congress for the democratic representativejulia carson. Welcome to you. Thank you for being with us. What is your assessment of how the first week of this impeachment trial has played out . think this is more a play for the American People than it is actually a trial. Like you said earlier, it is very, very unlikely that he will be removed from office. You will a lwa ys be removed from office. You will always have the impeached attached to his name but beyond that, i think this is more a show for the upcoming election that it is for anything else. If that is indeed the case, which i am sure many commentators would agree with you about, how do you think it is looking likely to impact on mrtrumps you think it is looking likely to impact on mr trumps re election chances so far . It will depend upon on whether they will allow witnesses oi on whether they will allow witnesses or not and what they say. It will also depend on who the democrats actually put up as their candidate for the election. Because if that candidate is someone who is com pletely u na cce pta ble to candidate is someone who is completely unacceptable to moderate republicans, we may see a shift back over to trump, however, republicans, we may see a shift back overto trump, however, if republicans, we may see a shift back over to trump, however, if that democratic candidate can pull some of the moderate republicans over, you may actually see a good race for the president. President trumps supporters are not going to change their mind based on this trial. They have been rock solid throughout his entire presidency no matter what he does, so we are not looking at those people as once you can be swayed. You talked about the issue of whether or not witnesses were allowed to be called and new evidence. The enquiry, the trial will decide on that next week. How crucial is it do you think to both sides . I do not think it is. The democrats are making this into a show for the upcoming election while i think the president has clearly done some things that are illegal, i think this part of the impeachment proceedings really isnt going to have an impact one way or another on his presidency for these four years. Interesting to get your thoughts, thank you for being with us. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. At least three people have been killed in iraq during clashes between Security Forces and Anti Government protesters. Dozens of others were injured during the violence in baghdad and the Southern City of nasiriya. The venezuelan opposition leader, juan guaido, is in spain as part of a tour of European Countries aimed at strengthening support for his campaign to remove his adversary, nicolas maduro, from power. Mr guaido, who defied a travel ban to go to europe, has been recognised as venezuelas interim president by dozens of countries including spain. But his year long bid for new elections has failed to unseat president maduro. The search for survivors of fridays earthquake in eastern turkey has entered a second night, with rescue teams working in sub zero temperatures. 29 people are known to have died and more than 1,400 have been injured. The 6. 8 magnitude, which centred on the town of sivrice in elazig province, caused buildings to collapse and was felt in neighbouring countries. Richard galpin reports. The powerful earthquake struck this Eastern Region of the country last night. Causing hundreds of casualties. In the darkness, people screaming for help as buildings collapsed. In the light this morning, the scale of destruction revealed this, just one of 30 buildings to have been brought down. Already though, there are many rescue teams on the ground, working frantically to save those trapped under giant slabs of concrete and other rubble. And they are having some success. This elderly woman pulled out alive today, amongst a0 to have been saved. But there is much more to be done. This rescuer speaks on the phone to a family trapped under a collapsed building, telling them they must stay awake dont let anyone sleep, she says. Since last night, there have been hundreds of after shocks, adding to the fear. Many people now have no choice but to sleep outside, away from any of these buildings, in temperatures as low as minus eight degrees. Richard galpin, bbc news. The latest headlines china has ordered a ban on organised tour groups, as a deadly new strain of coronavirus continues to spread. President trumps lawyers have begun the case for the defence at his impeachment trial. They say he did nothing wrong. Now imagine if you werent allowed access to the internet so you werent able to access any websites or social media. Well, thats exactly whats happened to the people of indian administered kashmir. The region did not have access to the internet for more than 150 days after the Indian Government ordered a shut down following a controversial constiutional changes to the status of the territory. But an Indian Supreme Court ruling has led to a partial restoration this weekend, ending the longest outage in any democracy. But the slower zg connection only allows access to around 300 government approved sites and theres still no social media. When i switch my phone on, i was excited to Access Internet services for so long. But i was only able to Access University and cricket news. It was a bit slow. I am a student i need to apply to universities for scholarships. Because of no internet i have not been able to do much. Scholarships. Because of no internet i have not been able to do muchm takes about an hour or two for any web page to open. So it hasnt helped. With me is nitasha kaul, an expert on kashmir and is originally from srinagar in indian administered kashmir. What more do we know about what access has been restored . From everything that we know the access is partial and restricted. It is only two g which is not very functionalfor a lot only two g which is not very functional for a lot of things. It is limited in the sense that a lot of news websites are not allowed, including reuters an indian express. Social media is not allowed, so essentially the problem with all of this is also that it is arbitrary. We dont really know for what reason the websites that are not being allowed a re the websites that are not being allowed are not being allowed and why something that should be peoples fundamental right, to access the internet, has been given to them as if it is a favour after 150 days. How restrictive has the lack of Internet Access been to people who have lived there for all these months . There has been extensive documentation of that. Last year i pointed out the multidimensional damage this has done to the people there in terms of businesses, medical access, educational institutions, students studying through distance education is, people contacting their relatives. It has been unimaginably harsh on them and the Internet Access that has been restored comes with all arms of risers including no misuse must happen. Anything that will be usable will also be com pletely will be usable will also be completely surveilled, so people have no privacy or Digital Access as we normally owe it. The indian prime ministers defence for doing this was the internet blackout was for security reasons, restricting armed militants from communicating. think that rhetoric has been quite clear because the idea that is being done for the development and security of cashmere was not for the security of cashmere was not for the security and development of kashmiris. Collectively punishing a population to help them feel better about any of this . The very fact the chief of the Indian Defence force has said they propose de radicalisation of children, this betrays a completely strange way of thinking about communication. Surely the way to address any problem is not to stop people and silence them and suffocate them and that is a very counter productive strategy as is becoming ever more evident. I was com pletely is becoming ever more evident. I was completely and not just is becoming ever more evident. I was completely and notjust me, many people looking at what has been happening to the kashmiris for this amount of time and how that is part ofa amount of time and how that is part of a chapter in a much longer history of what they have been going through, the brutalisation, impurities and so on would agree this is no way to increase anyones security be they kashmiris or indians. Do you feel at least the easing of these restrictions and allowing some access will ease tensions, improve relations . allowing some access will ease tensions, improve relations . Iwish i could say yes but i dont think so because it has become quite clear that this is being done only because of the supreme courtjudgment and at a time when the government could not have done anything otherwise. The fa ct have done anything otherwise. The fact that it is so limited, so partial and so restrictive and that we dont really know, there is no accountability in terms we dont know why it was off for so long, we dont know why websites are blocked. We dont know whether it will be there in february or any other time. Thank you very much for coming in. Gavin has all the sport. Hello and thank you forjoining us. Well get to the football in a minute, but first to the Australian Open in melbourne three of the big names from the womens draw are out. But australias star, nick krygios, survived a five set thriller. To set up an entertaining tie with the top seed rafa nadal, asjohn watson reports. It is never often straightforward with nick krygios and so it proved as the Australian Star booked his place in the last 16. He beat the rush and play in a five set thriller out on melbourne arena. He took the first two sets but dropped the next two as the match went to a fifth and deciding set. It was settled in a tie break, nick krygios progressing, much to the relief of the hundreds of australian fans who stayed behind to watch his match. With each victory he endears himself further to the australian public. It hasnt a lwa ys to the australian public. It hasnt always been the easiest of relationships between nick krygios and australia but with each win, they love him that little bit more. He goes on to face rough and adult in the next 16, an interesting matchup when you consider the frosty relationship the pair share. It all stems from the dulls comments to nick krygios about him lacking respect to himself and sport. Nick krygios responded by saying rafa nadal is too salty. No doubt claiming this was his best performance of the tournament. A warning to nick krygios. We saw a number of upsets in the womens tour yesterday. More of the same today. Three of the top five seeds are out. Carol yuna push cover has gone out. Also out is the number six seed belinda ben church. We have also seen Serena Williams go out. Coco gough continues her impressive tournament. You just wonder now the way the womens draw is certainly opening up this year, you get a feeling perhaps that the winds of change may well be blowing through Melbourne Park this year. West hams troubles continue after they were knocked out of the fa cup today, by championship high fliers west brom. Conor townsend scored early on to send his side through to the fifth round. West ham put up little resistance even when the baggies went down to ten men with shemi ajayi being sent off with 18 minutes remaining. It wasnt like one player that came out of the blue. It was all planned and everything and we had to be confident in this team and they pulled us right. As i said, this should be a big lift for us to continue like this and to live for this, i dont know how many games, but to live for these three months and to do everything to continue to do well in the cup and more importantly, well in the league. England had the better of the second day of their fourth and final test against south africa injohannesburg restricting south africa to 88 6 at the close. The tourists were bowled out for 400 thanks to half centuries from joe root and ollie pope. And a stand of 82 from stuart broad and mark wood. It was then the turn of englands bowlers once again, wood impressed taking 3 wickets for 21. I felt today as a unit collectively we played really well. It was hard to get that first wicket but i felt like we kept the pressure on them even though they didnt look like getting out, we didnt let them get away from us and we kept the pressure on that way. And then, i just tried to bring a little bit of energy when i came on, may something a bit different and tried and create an atmosphere and different feel to the game. Thank you. A reminder of our top story china has ordered a suspension of all domestic and overseas group tours, as it tries to control the spread of the coronavirus that has infected 1300 people. In that colder air, there will be some sunshine but also some showers, some of those turning wintry. Look how quickly tomorrow the rain is out of the way in Northern Ireland, pushes across scotland, wales and Northern England. It is behind the rain it will be brightening up, more especially for Northern Ireland and scotland. It will turn colder. The cold feel enhanced by a cold wind. It will feel different out and about by monday morning.
