President trumps doing. Business was suspended and the building evacuated after supporters of donald trump stormed congress. They were trying to stop the confirmation ofjoe bidens election victory. One person was shot. Police confirm shes now died. The president elect condemned the scenes in washington, saying they were unacceptable and un american. This is not dissent. Its disorder. Its chaos. It borders on sedition. The voting continues into the night as joe bidens the voting continues into the night asjoe bidens victory will soon be certified. The Dow Jones Industrial average has closed at a new record high despite unrest in washington dc. Investors have looked beyond violence in the us capital to focus on the prospect of the democrats controlling the white house, the senate and the house of representatives for the First Time Since 2009. A joint session of the us congress has reconvened after protestors stormed the capitol hill building earlier in the day. The process of counting of the Electoral College votes, confirming joe biden as the next president , is still under way and is expected to be completed in the next few hours. On wednesday, hundreds of Trump Supporters stormed congress, breaking into the Senate Chamber and the office of the house speaker. One woman was shot as they stormed the building and later died. Three others have died from medical emergencies. Two pipe bombs were found. 52 arrests were made. All this after President Trump addressed his supporters near the white house, repeating his claims that hed won the presidency by a landslide, that the election had been stolen by fraud, and telling them to march on capitol hill. Social media platforms twitter, facebook and instagram have now locked mr trump out of his account and threatened a permanent suspension. Peter bowes is our north america correspondent. Talk america correspondent. Us through the process ongoing talk us through the process ongoing in the senate. Yes, the process continues, the one that had to be halted abruptly earlier in the day when those protesters stormed into the building and they picked up exactly where they were. They we re exactly where they were. They were assessing arizona, the joint session had split into two, the senate and house were debating an objection to the result of the state of arizona and that was rejected by both houses. Now they are doing exactly the same thing after an objection was raised on the result in the state of pennsylvania. So what was a joint session, the two houses of the upper and lower house, separately debating that objection and now there is no chance of that actually going ahead and being confirmed by either house there is clearly no majority in favour of opposing that objection, so we expected to be dismissed, and then they will continue going from through the 50 states and lets see if we can get to the end without any more objections. It certainly means that the joint objections. It certainly means that thejoint session objections. It certainly means that the joint session will be sitting for many more hours through the night. Despite that president Electjoe Biden will come out of this as the winner as expected despite this extraordinary event in the past 24 extraordinary event in the past 2a hours. Extraordinary event in the past 24 hours. Yes, it has been a tumultuous day and youre absolutely right the final verdict or decision was never in doubt even before the events of the past few hours, thatjoe biden as you say will be certified and he will become the next president of the United States on 20 january, which is less than two weeks to go before that date, but clearly the events of the past few hours have raised a lot of uncertainty and fear in the minds and the hearts of americans around the country as to what the next two weeks are going to be like. While it is a foregone conclusion whats going to happen in thejoint houses in the next few hours, people it has to be said im quite concerned about how events might unfold over the next two weeks. Thank you, peter bowes, with the latest on whats happening at the moment with regards to politicians in the United States, the senators, those in the upper house and also the house of representatives, who are now debating the objection from pennsylvania. Lets continue to get reaction to those events in washington, dc. Us corporations and business groups have united in condemnation of the violence on capitol hill and called for a peaceful transition of power. Some are suggesting President Trump ought to be removed from office before january 20th. In a statement, the head of the National Association of manufacturers said, Vice President pence should seriously consider working with the cabinet to invoke the 25th amendment. That provides a mechanism to remove a president if they are unfit to carry out their duties. Dr Pippa Malmgren is an author and us policy analyst. She served as an economic adviser to president george w bush. It is good to have you on the programme. Tell us your thoughts. Nice to see you. Inaudible. The public should be aware that we have also seen governors mansions are surrounded in other locations around the country Like Washington state, oregon, georgia, michigan, california, texas as well, so this protest is notjust in the nations capital, it is across the country. I think it is also important to understand that this is republicans arguing that republicans have the wrong policy position as much as it is about republicans or trumpers arguing that the democrats shouldnt be certified. This is a very interesting moment in American History where i think we are witnessing a deep split in the Republican Party and probably the end of a 2 party system in the end of a 2 party system in the United States. I wasjust going to ask you about what this means in terms of donald trump trumpism Going Forward and what future that has within the Republican Party. Exactly. I think the point is it doesnt have a future within the Republican Party. It is going to oppose the Republican Party. One of the big issues is what does donald trump do when he leaves 7 does donald trump do when he leaves . I have argued for some time that he is highly likely to try to establish a Media Network in order to continue to have a voice. It wont matter where he broadcast from, whether he on a media platform. Inaudible. We seem to have lost our connection to pipa malmgren who was just giving us analysis of what this means Going Forward for the Republican Party and for the Republican Party and for donald trump and trumpism. I understand we can reconnect. Sorry, we lost due for a moment. You werejust explaining that you believe donald trump after january explaining that you believe donald trump afterjanuary 20, what his strategy will be talk us through that. |j what his strategy will be talk us through that. I believe he intends to create a media platform, a Media Network, so that he will continue to have a voice and he will broadcast from whatever position he is m, from whatever position he is in, includingi from whatever position he is in, including i suspect if prison is on the cards he will broadcast from there. So trumpism is definitely outlasting donald trump and will be a very important influence on american politics i think for some years to come asa i think for some years to come as a result of these events now. And what impact will that have on the administration of the new president to come, joe biden, given the outcome in georgia, given the fact that for the First Time Since 2009 the democrats have control. For the First Time Since 2009 the democrats have controllj think the bigger issue is it is not going to be about the certification ofjoe biden it is going to be about the way in which these events have been described and addressed. For example, the fact that these have been described as protesters rather than riots, whereas the black lives Matter Movement were described as riots and not protest. To be fair, though, we have heard in both houses they have called this an insurrection some of them are not calling them protesters. They a re them are not calling them protesters. They are saying that actually this is domestic terrorism. They are calling it out in congress. I think so, but i think that the public is going to find themselves divided on this question of how was this event described. So its not just was this event described. So its notjust the left was this event described. So its not just the left versus right. Its also going to be the special Interest Groups and how they fall given the way that these events have panned out. Again, what we are seeing are republicans fighting republicans just as much as republicans fighting democrats. Its a very interesting time for sure. Thank you forjoining us, doctor Pippa Malmgren, for joining us and giving us your analysis. Financial markets respond and react to what is going on wherever we are. Interestingly, wall street shrugged off the unrest are seenin shrugged off the unrest are seen in washington and in fact the dowjones seen in washington and in fact the Dow Jones Industrial average closed at a new record high, so if we were to talk you through some of the reasons why, some were explaining that investors were focused on the prospects of the democrats winning the houses of congress after winning the senate run off raises in georgia and what that means for the United States economy, the worlds bigger, and therefore the global economy. Michelle fleury explained this further. If you look at the trading pattern throughout the day we saw this huge run up on the dowjones industrial average up 500 points at one point and a similar story come out of the s p 500. Both of those indexes pared back some of the gains to close down slightly lower but they still managed to end up ahead and the reason for that is quite simple it is what is happening in those run off phrases in georgia and what it means that the democrats could end up Controlling Congress races. The assumption amongst investors is that if the democrats managed to gain control of congress, then it gives them a better likelihood of getting their economic agenda through. That means more stimulus for the economy, it means more spending on things like infrastructure. It means more spending on clean energy. That will benefit some companies and that will offset some of the fears that investors have about the democrats which is higher taxes andi democrats which is higher taxes and i think that is whats driving the action on wall street at the moment, but of course it does look somewhat jarring when you take these things side by side. That was Michelle Fleury and just to say, im just looking at how markets are trading in asia and it is mixed right now but in japan, the neck a 225 is up over i and is is largely because of what michelle was talking about because investors are now looking further ahead than the current unrest nikkei 225. They are looking ahead to what the new presidency will mean for the biggest economy in the world. We will bring in mark ostwald, chief economist and global strategist at adm investor services. Tell us what you think this means Going Forward from an economic perspective. Well, michelle is absolutely correct. It is this belief that there will be a big so called stimulus package. I think one has to be a little bit careful, though, because it wont be a stimulus package, it will effectively be an extra 1 trillion, and therefore some of the more outlandish proposals that people may have feared, it is not just the attacks, people may have feared, it is notjust the attacks, it is big infrastructure programmes, may not even get past. And so, for the moment, i think really markets are backstopped by Central Banks and it is the Central Banks and it is the Central Banks and it is the Central Bank Stimulus and the prospect of Central Bank Stimulus and the hopes relating to vaccines that are really propelling this. And what are your concerns, given what is going on in the United States. As you say, markets are technical, clinical, investors trying to read behind the between the lines. The clients money. As you say, whats going on within the us, the politics, the polarisation, it cannot be ignored, canete . No, it cant. This is really where the biggest risks lie. We have a risk reward scheme for markets, which is different from where we we re which is different from where we were in april, may last year when the Central Banks were rescued. We are at much higher valuations and therefore the political side of things, which has been ignored for the last pa rt last has been ignored for the last part last year where people said there is plenty more to go here and 20 more central bank backstop, this time around the Political Risk is something which can come from the sidelines and we are at risk and we have so much invested in vaccines and the stimulus package and want to be pessimistic, maybe things wont turn out quite as bad as people are expecting with such high valuations i think that is where the key risks for markets are. Most people are banking on are. Most people are banking on a good Third Quarter, whether you are looking at the us, the uk, germany, asia. Are you still thinking thats a possibility or are you a little bit more sceptical . I think we have to be cautious in light of what seeing in terms of the rapid spread, particularly recently, of the virus. Whether its the Third Quarter or quarter in certain sensors, from a Financial Market perspective, and i dont want to sound callous here, centres. It is a little bit mood. The problem is this pent up demand everyone is counting on may proved to be a little bit of a puff of smoke if, and this is where the political polarisation comes m, political polarisation comes in, if we dont actually get meaningful policies from governments around the world, particularly in the g7, to give the extra traction to a pent up demand recovery. Otherwise it canjust demand recovery. Otherwise it can just blow off and suddenly were back in the where people are saying, ok, great, now what happens . Because we have a lot of restructuring to do as a result of the virus and all the holes we have seen in our economies, deficiencies, whether its in healthcare or technology. There is a faster way of areas and there is a risk of disappointment there, i think. All right, thank you. Mark ostwald, thank you for being on the programme. Stay with us on bbc news. This is bbc world news. The latest headlines the us congress has reconvened to certify the election victory of president Electjoe Biden after Donald Trumps supporters stormed the capitol. Rioters forced their way inside and clashed with police. One person was shot Police Confirm shes now died. Lets go live to us congress. You can see the proceedings are under way. So the objection to certifying president Electjoe Bidens win in pennsylvania has just been rejected by the senate. 92 7. That rejection has been rejected. Senate leader Mitch Mcconnel moved to end the debate on the matter after senator hawley yielded his time. So that spares eve ryo ne his time. So that spares everyone in the Upper Chamber a two hour or more discussion. Mitch mcconnel does not expect any more challenges now to the Election Results as this process continues. However, in the house of representatives lawmakers are continuing to debate the objection that came in from pennsylvania. And that is what you are looking at now. So we are keeping across these proceedings as they continue on capitol hill. As you heard, both twitter and facebook have now suspended President Trumps accounts following his claims about Election Fraud and youtube has removed a video of his speech to protestors. Our north America Technology reporterJames Clayton has more from san francisco. I think ithinka i think a lot of people thought that donald trump would be suspended from twitter a long time ago. The fact he has an has surprised quite a lot of people. They think a lot of people. They think a lot of people thought he might get booted off, kicked off twitter mac after he was president. I think few people thought it would happen today, but that is what might well have happened. This 12 hour suspension is much more than that. If he doesnt remove these tweets he wont be allowed back on and twitter have said this, they said future violations of the rules will result in a permanent suspension. Anyone who knows anything about Donald TrumpsTwitter Twitter knows he flouts those all the time, particularly around voter fraud. I think what we will see now if donald trump is allowed back on twitter is a really sagacious look at what he is tweeting. I think it is pretty likely his days on twitter are numbered. Unless we see a reformed donald trump who cares a lot about twitter guidelines. It could be difficult to see a pathway for him continuing on twitter. The same things apply for facebook. Youve got to remember that biden is about to become the new president of the usa and what does he think about social media . Usa and what does he think about social media . He thinks they should be doing a lot more to combat fake news and extremism. If you look at what donald trump is tweeting at the moment, a lot of it is fake news, its about myths, disinformation, about voter fraud. And if you look at some of the tweets he tweeted today, for instance calling some of the people who stormed capitol hill patriots, but falls into the extremism bracket. And what a lot of these social Media Companies will do is say there isa companies will do is say there is a new ruler in town, we need to work out how to appease the policies of that new president. And that new president is a lot hotter on fake news and disinformation. We will be seeing now a lot more of these big social Media Companies playing the referee a lot more, taking stuff down from their platforms and moderating all sorts of things on their platforms in a much more aggressive way. That is James Clayton there, our technology correspondence. Lets talk about what happened in georgia. The democrats have control of the white house as a result of the race there. Both houses for the First Time Since 2009. That comes after the democrats jon ossoff and Raphael Warnock won the run off elections in georgia omitting their party now controls the houses. You can see lots of detail on our website about this and you can see here Raphael Warnock there. That was a picture taken during his campaign. He beat Kelly Loeffler and he is the first black senator for georgia in its entire history. A slavery state, of course, in the us civil war. 4 million georgians turned out to vote for this extremely important run off in terms of senate seats and jon ossoff beat david perdue. So that a significant development. These are life pictures coming from the us senate, the us house of representatives, as they continue to debate the pennsylvania election. Hello there. There was some welcome sunshine in many areas on wednesday, but theres a definite wintery feel and look to the weather at the moment. Not only do we have a widespread frost, but there will be some icy stretches around, and we have a spell of snow moving down from scotland and Northern Ireland ahead of that, some patches of freezing fog, as well. Lets have a look at more detail then into the morning. And whilst there will be some patchy fog in the southeast of england, most of it will be through the midlands and towards merseyside. Some icy patches in Eastern England with those showers coming in off the north sea. And quite icy in scotland and Northern Ireland with that band of rain, sleet and snow moving down across the country, leaving a few centimetres of lying snow by the morning in many areas. Now gradually that rain, sleet, and increasingly snow to high ground moves down into northern england. Brightening up in scotland and Northern Ireland, more snow for northern scotland. Further south, most of that fog will tend to lift, although it could be quite great in a few places and feel particularly cold, some sunshine to come especially in wales and the southwest another cold day wherever you are. And it will stay cold as we move into friday. The threat of more ice and also frost, as well, and maybe some more wintry showers coming into eastern scotland and northern england. A spell of light snow expected through the midlands and wales before that tends to peter out, also some damp weather in the southwest. But away from here, many places i think well see some sunshine. Again, its a cold day, temperatures struggling to 1 2 celsius, for example, in glasgow and also birmingham. Now lets head into the weekend slow changes to come, widespread frost on saturday morning, sunshine for england and wales, a cold day here, turning more cloudy for scotland and Northern Ireland, but a dampness around as well, especially in northern scotland as the breeze temperatures start to rise in the northwest of scotland, it stays cold elsewhere with temperatures at 3 4 celsius. We got a week weather front for northern areas, still around for the second half of the weekend. High pressure starting to nudge in, and we are starting to change in the wind direction, picking up some milder air slowly but surely thatll come in from the atlantic. But that does mean the weather will turn more unsettled. We start to see the milder air coming in towards northwestern areas, wind picking up and rain moving in early next week, and eventually that milder air moves further south and also further east. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt.
