To revive Global Economic confidence. Also in the programme. Tweet but dont travel twitter asks its staff to work from home in a bid to stop the spread of the virus. And with much of china still in lockdown many businesses in beijing remain shut as workers stay away. A special report from our correspondent who is based there. And what goes around comes around. Its traditional fine china making a comeback . We will get the input from a firm trying to revive porcelain. And what do you do to relax . Meditate, yoga, exercise, alcohol. Let us know. Let us knowjust use the hashtag bbcworklife. And very warm welcome. Many of you have already been in touch already proudly, with your top tips on relaxation, so we will share those a little later in touch already, apparently. Some of the worlds most powerful finance ministers and central bankers will take part in a Conference Call on the Economic Impact of coronavirus later today. There is now an expectation the g7 meeting could lead to a round of global Interest Rate cuts. In the last few hours Australias Central Bank cut its Interest Rate bya 0. 25 and the outbreak is having a significant effect on the countrys economy due to its reliance on china. The oecd is now predicting that the outbreak will lead to Global Growth this year of 2. 4 , down by 0. 5 , and its slowest rate since the Global Financial crisis. The us fed chiefjerome powell is widely tipped to cut its key rate by 0. 5 at its next meeting on march 17th, and possibly even before then. That would be the steepest rate cut since the financial crisis in 2008. But worth remembering that us borrowing costs were much higher, 5. 25 , as the financial crisis hit, so the fed had plenty of firepower then. Injapan, the central bank also meets next month its key Interest Rate stands in negative territory at 0. 1 , so barely any ammunition there. Lower rates boost economic activity, by encouraging people and businesses to borrow and spend, but do little reopen factories or supply chains. The Global Tourism slowdown has hit shopkeepers from bangkok to venice, and its feared a Global Pandemic would not only hit Company Profits but would stop consumer spending. Also consumer travelling, and they would be a lot of fear out there, david. Certainly a lot of fear. With us now isjennifer mckeown, head of Global Economics services, capital economics. Thank you forjoining us. Reports from the oecd saying we could see Global Growth halved. What difference could these relatively minor rate cuts have . Not a great deal of difference, really. The bank of japan deal of difference, really. The bank ofjapan and deal of difference, really. The bank of japan and the deal of difference, really. The bank ofjapan and the european deal of difference, really. The bank of japan and the European Central bank, both with Interest Rates in negative territory already so they cant cut much further. Even those that can, exactly how much that will do given they cant get factories producing if the factory simply cant source components because of supply Chain Disruption caused by the virus or indeed if they are closed altogether because workers have been told to go home, and they also cant get people spending if people are afraid to go to cinemas or shopping malls forfear people are afraid to go to cinemas or shopping malls for fear of catching the virus. Thats it. These are suggestions that may be Global Growth could have, you could see them is pretty close to the mark . Yes. That was the oecd worst Case Scenario and i think their worst case could be even worse than that actually. We may well see spending stopping around the world as these fears grow, and also these supply Chain Disruptions are continuing, so it is quite feasible. Right, what is the knock on for us . We can talk about these big globalfigures, but presumably this means jobs going, about these big globalfigures, but presumably this meansjobs going, it will increase the risk of poverty, affect Government Spending etc . The key knock on for us obviously is a Health Concern and the government will need to do a lot to try to prevent the spread of the virus insofar as that is possible, but financially, economically, it will be more aboutjobs and really his Interest Rate cuts, showing they happen, will be trying too tight firms over so they dont make those lay offs. If the central bank can provide a lot more liquidity and loa ns to provide a lot more liquidity and loans to businesses maybe they can tide them over until things get better. So good old qe, sokol quantitative easing, could become another element, do you think . What do you think will be the outcome of todays Conference Call . The good old quantitative easing. Banks are talking about targeted measures and i think that is probably what they mean, giving loans to companies that need them, to make sure they dont have to lay off workers. And that is what we have seen the Italian Government do already, reducing business taxes for those Companies Really impacted in north italy . Yes, in italy it has come from fiscal support so far and i think that probably is the main way policy can help, through providing targeted tax cuts to the companies that need them. 0k, jennifer, thank you very much indeed. Youre welcome. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. China saying they will allocate 16 billion this month to prevent the spread of coronavirus. 10 billion in social insurance relief will also be available for enterprises this year. That is just the kind of fiscal policy year. That is just the kind of fiscal polichennifer was talking about. As for the airlines. British airways and budget rival ryanair have cancelled hundreds of flights already as demand for travel drops amid fears about the spread of covid 19. The affected destinations include new york, italy, france, and ireland. Both airlines have declined to comment on how many flights or passengers would actually be affected. And apple has agreed to settle a long running class action case in the us over allegations it deliberately slowed down older iphones. The proposed settlement which still has to be approved could cost apple up to 500 million, meaning each affected user could get just 25. The case dates back to 2017, when apple confirmed it slowed older phones to lengthen their lifespan. As the coronavirus continues to spread, more and more firms are taking precautionary action to protect staff. The latest company to act is twitter, which has told staff in hong kong, japan and south korea to work remotely. Lets cross to our Asia Business hub now where Sharanjit Leyl has been following the story for us. Maybe its the beginning of a flood, sharanjit, but they have taken the plunge . They have ended. Really one of the first big american firms to say that. Essentially they have indeed. Essentially trying to encourage the rest of their 5000 employees around the world as well not to come into work. This afternoon twitter banned all nonessential business travel, and we know these moves are similar to those already put in place by Many Companies here in asia and it is really as the virus which the region, but for a really as the virus which the region, but fora big really as the virus which the region, but for a big american business, the first time they have started reacting to this. Other tech firms are making similar moves. We have staff at European Headquarters working from home today to test their preparedness. Twitter, no big surprise it would embrace the idea of working from home because its chief executive jack dorsey is a big proponent of remote working, saying for instance he plans to live in africa for up to six months of this year. We have other firms as well like telecoms operator at t, banking giants, who havent quite gone to those extremesjust giants, who havent quite gone to those extremes just yet giants, who havent quite gone to those extremesjust yet but have Restricted International travel, especially to here in asia. Thanks a lot, sharanjit. That is the action on the part of twitter. Lets show your financial markets. We are keeping a close eye on how they are going and as you can see that is a man on a bike. No detail whatsoever and it doesnt help at all. But i can tell you japan closed over 1 lower today. A pretty volatile session in asia. Hong kong was up, down, and 5 gain on the dow in wall street, a bit of a bounce back in reaction to what we have been discussing, the central bank saying we are ready and poised to support and as far as europe is concerned, again, we saw a big bounce back for european markets on monday and the european trading session has been going for about a0 minutes and it is kind of a level playing field. Investors really on the sidelines, not quite sure what way to go in terms of buying or selling but i cant bring you the data for now so i will hand you back to david. Yes. Well, either way, they are hoping for gains after last week, sally. Now to the us, where investors will be looking for signs of possible impact of the coronavirus on the economy as retail giant retail giant target releases its latest Financial Results later today. Michelle fleury has more from new york. For Many American shoppers, target is the cheap and cheerful option in department stores, which means its opening statements, well, they give us all kinds of clues at the state of the us economy. Its latest statement is out on tuesday. First off is its sheer size. If americans are happy to spend, theyre probably spending a fair bit at target. Second is china a lot of targets products are made there, so if the coronavirus is severely interrupting supplies from china, target may well have something to tell us about that. And then there is the situation right here in new york. Target, which is based in minneapolis, was planning to update investors in person at a meeting in midtown manhattan, but it had to ditch those plans and is doing a webcast instead because of the coronavirus. Right. Time now for our daily look at some of the newspaper and website stories which have caught our eye. Joining me is kirsty bashforth, author and founder of quayfive, a Consultancy Firm that focuses on putting Employee Culture at the heart of business. Thank you forjoining us. Where shall we start . Well, where else . We a lwa ys shall we start . Well, where else . We always start with abington post, actually, and they take here, what will it be like to work during a coronavirus outbreak . Many of you around the world are already experiencing that, depending on what that looks like, depending where you are, but what is the Huffington Post saying . We will start with a havent imposed. Yes, use wi fi, no travel, but for a lot of people who are not Office Workers who may be in care, production, services, and you cant just not turn care, production, services, and you cantjust not turn up, or if you area cantjust not turn up, or if you are a provider what do you do . Reduce staff ratios . Quite interesting. In the last hour i spoke to someone very senior at bmw and they had someone yesterday test positive in their research and development for coronavirus and they had to tell all the people in that factory, 150 people, stay at home. Had to tell all the people in that factory, 150 people, stay at homelj think the challenge is inconsistency at the moment. Some firms doing a lot, some still thinking about it, governments still working out different approaches, well then i think there is a lot of uncertainty for people and it is a challenge. This is a huge issue and it is global. It could be a transformational moment in terms of working from home . It could be, if you can, if yourjob allows it. Video streaming, all sorts of things. I am already doing that. Whose home would be bn, yours or mine . Its a question, isnt it moving on, stress at work. With this going on i would imagine people are feeling more stressed, perhaps, because of concern about how this is being dealt with in the workless whos how would you be in . These free Meditation Apps are taking off, andi free Meditation Apps are taking off, and i feel like i am free Meditation Apps are taking off, and ifeel like i am being pushed one all the time on my smartphone. Every time i go onto instagram i get calm across my screen. Yes, go away apples apps, yes, these are becoming big, in business too, because companies thinking about the well being of their staff, notjust because it is the right thing to do but it is economically efficient. A p pa re ntly but it is economically efficient. Apparently they get 5 back in reduced absence, turnover, etc, and. It is so often how it is presented to you, isnt it . Push down your throat come you dont want it, but if it is a nice added extra, suddenly it seems appealing. And there have been a lot of tributes to jack welch, the General Electric boss, who became a business superstar. This is the New York Times paying tribute. Yes, he has died at 8a, obviously a huge icon of business in the 80s 90s. Built it up to a10 billion. I think he was a case of right person, right time. It struck me as Business Times change, and what was a world in their of brilliance might now be seen as brutal capitalism, particularly in the esd era. Right person, right time, doesnt mean they are right forever. Nonetheless the basics of what he set out to do a cut from the bottom. If youre not quite good enough, youre out. Yes, the bottom 10 is that i arrived in business and all 10 is that i arrived in business and all i heard, if you are not good enough, it could gojack welchs way. Fewer people seem to do that 110w. Way. Fewer people seem to do that now. As i say, times change. Different leaders, different times. Yes, that was jack welch. Kirsty, thanks very much. 0k, coming up, what goes around comes around. The fine china that once graced our grandparents fine china that once graced our grandpa rents tables. Is fine china that once graced our grandparents tables. Is it making a comeback . Youre with worklife from bbc news. 0k, Online Shopping and higher rental rates all leading to more store closures. Correspondent is in Bishop Auckland to see how the high street is faring there. Here in cou nty street is faring there. Here in County Durham we are asking what the future holds for britains struggling high streets. In this town, Bishop Auckland in the north east of england, almost one in four shops is now empty. But the obviously challenges new businesses are starting up, obvious challenges. Including this new artisan bakery, trading out of this cafe for the last ten months, and the head baker, phil, who has been busy come up with the larks, you relocated from london to start this business. Why here and vai now despite the difficult climate . This is my hometown, so inevitable i would move back at some point. We move back three years ago, thought it would be a quiet town why now . We saw that as a blank canvas. Some shops here have been empty for more than a decade, no demand for retail space, so are than a decade, no demand for retail space, so are you than a decade, no demand for retail space, so are you taking a bit of a risk . It is definitely a race because you never know what the future will bring but with a castle opening again and a lot of other museums about to open the footfall will increase so we can take that opportunity. The element that is what Bishop Auckland is trying to market itself as, a tourism hub celebrating its history. They are renovating the castle, a big tower in the marketplace. Lots of cafes here. You have the 50s cafe next door. What have some of the challenge has been for you and your sister . I think the initial challenge was fitful at first but with the regeneration of Bishop Auckland footfall is coming and i think people are excited to get back into the high streets, they dont wa nt into the high streets, they dont want to shop online any more they wa nt want to shop online any more they want an experience, something to touch. That is very much the theme coming through here. Despite the challenges, lots of optimism, and this regeneration is being driven by local entrepreneurs willing to take a risk of the place where they grew up a risk of the place where they grew up and where they love. That is sarah corker there in Bishop Auckland. Not cooker. She wont mind we will stay with Bishop Auckland, to look at the way the high street is developing in these very difficult times. 0nline lots of stories, including this one from the ba kery stories, including this one from the bakery greggs on how they will treat their staff if they have to self isolate. This is worklife. 0ur self isolate. This is worklife. Our top story today. The worlds most powerful bankers and financiers are going to be on the phone, having a Conference Call to talk about what they can do to try to counter the Economic Impact of coronavirus. Yeah, which just about affects everybody, doesnt it . Including our next guest. Now, think of fine china and what springs to mind is dainty, floral porcelain tableware that graced our grandparents mantelpieces. These were once treasured staples in many homes, but their popularity has waned in recent years. I think it is fair to say. Well, i can never have it in my house because i have three little boys and they will just smash it all. When because i have three little boys and they willjust smash it all. When i think of beautiful porcelain, i think of beautiful porcelain, i think of beautiful porcelain, i think of something i cant have my guest is british designer Richard Brendon and he aims to revive this most traditional of british crafts. He started a contemporary tableware brand in 2013. And it is his name. Richard brendon, welcome to the programme. Good to have you here. You showed me some of your stunning porcelain. It isa some of your stunning porcelain. It is a real range, actually. Some is very old fashioned, antique, as it were. Talk us to have it all works. Sure. I launched the brand in 2013, off the back of designing a teacup and saucer whilst studying product design, and and saucer whilst studying product design, and i went to stoke on trent to find a manufacturer, fell in love with the skills of the plotters in the potteries there and decided to lodge a brand all about regenerating skills in the craft industries. Like my it takes a long time for reputations to change, though, because the reputation of the potteries, your industry, is one that has done one thing in recent yea rs that has done one thing in recent years and that is just go downhill, so are years and that is just go downhill, so are pretty brave market to try to break into . Well, i think the potteries have had a very tough time but i think the industry has really bottomed out and what is left is really, really high quality manufacturing, and unbelievable skills. And, actually, you now, if we can regenerate those skills now we can regenerate those skills now we have a real opportunity to grow the industry. It is growing again. And to see really good regeneration. Where do you grow it . Thats the point. We were talking earlier, you know, its a generational thing, it feels, to a lot of people. They dont necessarily want the dinnerware set any more. Sure, i totally agree with that. I think younger people dont have their sunday best china which they get out every weekend, so for us we are growing the business in the us. The us is our largest market. But for bone china actuated hotels and restaurants, that is where we can see restaurants, that is where we can see real growth, working with some of the best hotels in london, the carinthia, the four seasons, and there is a real opportunity there to do some great bespoke and custom design work. And that is what it is all about, the bespoke, high end, premium product. 0nce all about, the bespoke, high end, premium product. Once upon a time stoke on trent used to be the porter, the ceramic maker of the world, but not any more with a lot of cheap stuff coming out of the far east . Exactly. I think stoke on trent and some other british industries, the shoe industry, for example, they became as efficient and productive as they could be, and the only way to reduce costs was to move production overseas. What were seeing now is actually a kind of realignment of these industries. The kind of going back to what they used to be before they did supply the whole world, and they did supply the whole world, and the focus is really on quality. Can ijust say, we the focus is really on quality. Can i just say, we are the focus is really on quality. Can ijust say, we are really the focus is really on quality. Can i just say, we are really used the focus is really on quality. Can ijust say, we are really used to asking the brexit question, how brexit is affecting you, but actually the coronavirus question is perhaps more appropriate right now. How is that affecting your Business Today . Well, couple of things. Fortunately our manufacturing is in the uk and europe and at the moment we have experienced any shutdown clinic introduction but obviously that could happen. For us i would say the biggest effect is we are raising investment at the moment and moment and we are crowdfunding through crowd cube and i cant say Investor Confidence is high at the moment. A lot of uncertainty, sounds like an absolute cliche, but it is true. All of your glassware is made in slovenia, and that is what you are selling most in the united states. How will us leaving or indeed this transition process, when that ends at the end of the year, what will that mean for you . M that ends at the end of the year, what will that mean for you . It is still very hard to answer that question. I think we will have to see question. I think we will have to see what deal is struck but things we are considering, we have a third warehouse in the us, so we might start shipping directly from slovenia to the us as an example. We might start to warehouse in slovenia. At the moment all of our warehouses are centralised in stoke on trent. Fight back britain loses out from that perspective . Potentially, yes. So loses out from that perspective . Potentially, yes. So britain loses out from that perspective . It isa loses out from that perspective . It is a reality, isnt it. Richard, thank you. Coming up, yourtop tips for de stressing. Looking forward to that. Yes, but with much of china still in lockdown, many businesses in beijing remain closed. Thats because their employees are either unable or choosing not to return to the city. Heres our china correspondent, stephen mcdonell. So on a beautiful afternoon this is normally a busy street. Look at all these businesses. Closed, that one. Closed. Next door, closed. The restaurant here, not open. Hang on. This is a shop open. Lets see if we can get someone to talk to us. Translation the problem with shopping is touching everything. Now, ive got some apples here. Ive got to touch the screen. Who knows where that last hand has been . Studio a quick nine holes is what some of us do to de stress. Yes, works for me. And we were asking about these free Meditation Apps being offered. Are they the answer for stressed staff . Lets see what you have had to save is that martin paul says no, not the answer. What is needed is better management, better awareness of how stress is caused, how to relieve it and an entire rethink of worklife balance. Yeah, and he is not on his own. Russell kelly, remove the sources of stress, often managers who are underqualified and over promoted. And this one. I like to drink coffee and listen to classical music. That sounds like a good combination. Getting into the what do you actually do. As i say, i will go to the gym if i can. I walk my dog. Coffee is a good idea. Another one. Most of us are chronically underpaid and overworked which leads to endemic stress and society so and Meditation App wont change a system that exploits its workforce. Yes, not so much even about the apps as the workplace, is it . Indeed, orthe managers. Give us a better workplace in the first place. Thanks for your comments. We will see you tomorrow. Good morning. Another chilly start. Some frost around this morning, but todays where there will be similar todays where there will be similar to yesterday.
