Also in the programme a warning from us regulators to telecoms giants sharpen up on data protection. And talking trade british negotiators are brussels bound to begin dialogue about a new deal with the eu. And well be getting the inside track on how disaster can often lead to success we talk to professional cyclist morgan fox, who turned his life around after suffering a serious crash. Today, we want to know job hunting is a big theme on worklife so whats the weirdest or worst questions youve ever been asked in an interview . Let us know just use the hashtag bbcworklife. Hello and welcome to worklife. Brand new trading week has begun and eve ryo ne brand new trading week has begun and everyone was on tenterhooks, which way will Financial Markets go . Asia started with heavy losses. But share prices in asia have reversed early losses afterjapans central bank followed the us, and promised to support markets in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. The virus is continuing to spread across the world, with the total number of cases now close to 90,000. The Economic Impact is growing with chinas factory activity plunging in february, as manufacturers shutdown operations. Shut down operations. Chinas official measure of Manufacturing Activity the purchasing Managers Index dropped to 35. 7 from 50 injanuary, thats their worst on record. China makes up more than a quarter of World Manufacturing and is the Worlds Largest exporter, so this will have a knock on effect on well known brands including apple, diageo and volkswagen. And thats got markets worried. Last friday, the three main us indexes ended the week down 10 , their worst week since the Global Financial crisis. But as i mentioned, earlier today, in asia we saw a bit of a bounce back and in europe, weve been trading for nearly 35 minutes. Kallum pickering from Berenberg Bank in londonjoins us now. Kallum, how is europe starting, talk us kallum, how is europe starting, talk us through it. It is probably on the back of the strong signal that Central Banks that they can help out, upa Central Banks that they can help out, up a little. I wouldnt get optimistic for a good week ahead. The news will be to the downside, we will probably sell off from here over the course of the week as we begin to learn more aboutjust how big the impact of the coronavirus could be on companies and major economies. Youre saying volatility is here to stay for now . Thats right. We will get volatility in markets. Essentially, markets dont yet know firstly how long this will last and secondly, to what extent it will Impact Global economies. Three major Global Manufacturing hubs, asia, europe and the us. Already, asia, europe and the us. Already, asia is struggling under the problem of coronavirus. We are worried it could be a bigger issue in europe and down the line the us would need to worry a little. The outlook for the near term is for a lot of economic disruption and a lot of companies would be very worried about their revenues over the course of this year. If there is a risk that say, for four of this year. If there is a risk that say, forfour or six of this year. If there is a risk that say, for four or six weeks that production is disrupted significantly. Kallum, thank you. Joining us now is kallum, thank you. Silvia dallangelo, whos a senior economist at Hermes Investment management. A bit ofa a bit of a bounce back but the signals from central bank that they might be stepping in, what tools do they had to step in and help . Clearly, Central Banks. Interest rates are running at a very low level. Long term Interest Rates are running very low, meaning that the qe programme, lets say, has less scope to really depress Interest Rates. In the long term. However, i think that Central Banks can have an impact on sentiment and thats what were seeing now. We also see in government step in. 0ver were seeing now. We also see in government step in. Over the weekend, the Italian Government announcing measures to support businesses and others in northern italy. To what extent will that alleviate the economic downfall, as it were . Thats right. The Italian Government announced a 3. 6 billion euros package of measures to limit the impact from coronavirus. We also had from the german finance minister, which is quite interesting, i think we heard. Suggest in germany has the financial power to limit the consequences of coronavirus. I think this is also helping sentiment, first of all. Of course, if we were to see more measures, of course, that would also effectively help the economy. Thats the reason why i am cautiously optimistic and i think that in the second half of the year, after a very severe hit to the Global Economy, we might see a bit of a rebound. Interestingly, you are cautiously optimistic but what we are dealing with is a situation that is so unpredictable, its almost beyond belief. We just is so unpredictable, its almost beyond belief. Wejust simply is so unpredictable, its almost beyond belief. We just simply dont know how its going to spread and where and when and to what extent. We dont know much about the virus. We dont know much about the virus. We dont know whether it would be effectively contained. Data from china is somewhat encouraging, as it looks like the situation is about to peak over there. We might expect the same to happen elsewhere in the next couple of months. But, of course, because we dont know much about the virus, it might stick around for longer. There might be a second wave. Theres a lot of uncertainty. Silvia, thank you very much. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. 100 british negotiators are travelling to brussels to begin talks about a new trade deal with the eu. The first phase of discussions, due to last four days, will be led by the Prime Ministers europe advisor, david frost. Theyll also cover areas such as co operation on security and transport. Elsewhere, the uks Prime Minister borisjohnson has promised to drive a hard bargain as he set out the uks negotiating position for a post brexit free trade deal with the us. Talks on a deal are expected to begin later this month with healthcare and food standards set to be among the key issues discussed. And for the first time ever, germany has failed to produce any ice wine because temperatures in all 13 of the regions where its made were too high this winter. The dessert wine requires grapes that have frozen while still on the vine. Last year was, globally, the second warmest on record. And i had ice wine . No iwasjust thinking that and we wont because they havent managed to make any. Share prices in asia have reversed early losses after japans central bank promised to support markets in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. Katie silverjoins us now from singapore. Kt. Kt, nice to see you, tell us more about whats going on where you are in terms of Financial Market support. Katie. In terms of Financial Market support. Katie. We are seeing a slight stabilisation, not huge gains, but most economies hear up about i gains, but most economies hear up about 1 after a shocking week. The Global Economy last week lost about 5 trillion us dollars and it comes after these comments from the bank of japan saying they are willing to intervene. It is a rare comment from the bank ofjapan, they intervene. It is a rare comment from the bank of japan, they havent made such a comment since 2016, when they said following the brexit vote they said following the brexit vote they said they would be willing to intervene. It also comes off the back of comments from us federal Chairjerome Powell on friday saying they are going to intervene. But were also seeing ongoing jitters when it comes to really Interesting Data when it comes to chinas manufacturing. It shows the effect how bad the shutdown has been throughout february and what this might mean in terms of the Global Economy forward. We are seeing small to Medium Enterprise data and that showed it hit a record low, down to about a0. If this data is correct and there has been that level of low manufacturing in china, thats going to have effects on the Global Economy because we are buying so many products from them. Katie, thank you so much. We were hoping to show you some numbers on the european and asian markets but we are struggling with our graphics right now. Thank you for now, katie, see you later. There we are. Now to the us, where Samira Hussain has the latest on the day ahead on wall street. Regulators in the us that oversee mobile carriers said some of those companies were not doing enough to protect customers real time location data, which was improperly sold to third parties. The federal Communications Commission is suggesting fines of more than 200 million against t mobile, at t, sprint and verizon. It would be some of the largest fines the agency has imposed in decades. Now, this kind of data location is especially sensitive, since it affects millions and millions of people and it can really reveal intimate details about their lives, including personal relationships, and even visits to the doctor. Now, the sale of this kind of data is pretty widespread among app makers and other technology companies, but telecommunications, well, that sector is subject to much more stringent laws that are protecting customers confidentiality. Time now for our daily look at some of the newspaper and website stories which have caught our eye. Joining me is james innes, hes the author of several best selling career helpbooks, and founder of the James Innes Group a cv and resume writing company. Which brings us perfectly to what we are talking about, hideous job interviews and whether that makes you more or less likely to work for that company. Very good question. Fairly Extensive Research from glass door. It is important to realise the age bracket, 25 35, it doesnt imply to us what are you suggesting if you are young, bizarrely, you are more likely to take a job offer if you have been put through your paces at interview. Generally 20 of people will drop out and say they wont take up the offer for one reason or another. Its about a serious point, trying to attract the right talent and if you are thoroughly grill at interview and in that age bracket, you are more likely that in our age bracket, you are more likely to feel insulted. What is going on in these interviews. Putting you through your paces, what does the wall street journal us . The tell wall street journal us . The tell wall street journal picking up on particular kinds of questions. Personality quizzes, that is pase, not interesting, that can increase the likelihood of taking up the job offer. But the famous big tech and big banking, Investment BankingCompany Questions like, would you rather fight a duck sized horse or a horse sized duck and white is water tasteless . A horse sized duck and white is water tasteless . What would you do if the out . Two why is. How would you bring the monkey down from the chandelier . If you are an elephant what would you do with your trunk and do you like to sing in the bath . This is in money, your article for this is in money, your article for this is in money, your article for this is money, the types of questions people opposed in interviews. We asked our viewers to send us funny ones. What purpose does it serve to ask these sort of questions . There is purposes and some people think interviewers are sadistic and enjoy it but it is about how you react. With most of these questions, there isnt a right answer, it is about reacting under pressure. I did an interview a long time ago for a management role and towards the end of the interview, one of the Senior Executives walked m, one of the Senior Executives walked in, look to be up and out and said, so, can you make tea . Thats not particularly difficult or weird, but certainly unexpected. I said, yeah, im quite good at making tea, i can p0p im quite good at making tea, i can pop out and get amateurs but he said later its about seeing how you reacted and i was looking for a team player, not somebody who would be insulted by the question, im not far too important to make tea insulted by the question, im not far too important to make team far too important to make tea m the chancellor of the exchequer can make tea for his team its a good sign of leadership. If you were facing this, what are the tips on how to deal with something, and at a curve ball like how many tube stations are there in london or can you sell me this pen . You dont know. Breathe, take it easy, dont panic. Youre allowed to smile, these are entertaining questions. Dont sit there in silence for two minutes and come up with an answer, they want to see the way you reason through it, the way you think your way through it, talk your way through your reasoning, be logical and methodical and there is a right a nswer to and methodical and there is a right answer to that question but no one is going to know it unless you work for london underground. It is specific. It is about staying cool underfire. Specific. It is about staying cool under fire. A quick word about this next story in the daily star newspaper, will i lose myjob if i need to self isolate from coronavirus . Some people are concerned about this if they are either freelance or have a short term contract. Where do they stand . Lose yourjob or get paid, these are good questions. Boris johnson, i saw him this morning saying we are fantastically well prepared for the coronavirus to hit the country but we are not in this particular point because we dont have the legislation in place to cover self isolation. There is nothing in place and employers are under no obligation to pay you all retain you. And employers are not insured. Absolutely. It will hit them hard as well but they are under no legal obligation under current legislation. James, thank you very much. Im still thinking about those questions, what would you do if there was a monkey hanging from the chandelier . How would you get it down . We will leave it on that note. The mind boggles. We have so much more to come. Getting back on track we find out how professional cyclist morgan fox turned his life around after suffering a serious crash and how disaster can lead to new success. Youre with worklife from bbc news. We talked a lot already aboutjobs, interviews, whats going on. Millennials from black, asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, or bame, are a7 more likely to be on a zero hours contract, and 10 more likely, than their white peers, to be working a second job. Thats according to a new study by carnegie uk trust, the ucl centre for longitudinal studies and operation black vote. Joining us now is doctor Morag Henderson one of the report authors. What do the findings show . Thank you forjoining us. Thank you. This is a study that looks at about 8000 young adults in england and follows their life from adolescence. We are at the point of aged 25 and we can find out what their work status and job status is. We know there is quite a well documented ethnic minority pay gap and all this report shows is that there is additionally some ethnic minority gaps in terms of secure employment. We are talking about permanent contracts without being fixed term. What we find is that for pretty much all of the categories that we look at, including some that you mentioned, zero hours contracts, having a second job, not having a permanent contract, being a shift worker or being unemployed, black and minority ethnic groups are more likely to be in those categories. We think there are some systematic challenges that these groups face and the government and employers should do more to try and address some of those inequalities. What are you hoping will be the outcome of this research . We are really keen to raise awareness of this. It has been in the news quite a lot recently, particularly at the bbc, among others, and we are hoping to shine a light on the inequality and tried to address some of that inequality. Secondly, the second main finding is that we identify those who have those precarious jobs are that we identify those who have those precariousjobs are more likely to report symptoms of Mental Ill Health, which we know its expensive for the country, and also bad for society. The countries that have higher levels of well being in the population are also the most productive. It is not only a social justice issue but it is an economic issue to try to reduce Mental Ill Health and improve well being in the workforce. Doctor Morag Henderson, we appreciate your time. Thank you. Youre watching worklife. A reminder of our top story counting the cost of coronavirus, the worlds top central banker promise to step in as the growing outbreak threatens the Global Economy. A pretty difficultjob. Now lets get the inside track on overcoming adversity to maintain your passion. This is exactly the challenge former professional cyclist morgan fox faced in 2012, when he suffered a horrific bike crash in china. It left morgan with nine broken ribs and a punctured lung. And to make matters worse, a overdose of antibiotics prescribed to him resulted in him completely losing his hearing. However, refusing to give up, morgan decided to set up his own professional cycling team last year. Evopro is currently irelands only professional cycling team. Morgan joins us now. Morgan, welcome. How are you now . Im great, thanks very much, im super. I had a cochlear implant in these past few years and that has basically transformed my life. And your hearing has come back . Basically transformed my life. And your hearing has come back7m basically transformed my life. And your hearing has come back . It has come back. Its quite a story, you really hit your lowest point and this terrible accident derailed your career. Just tell us how you found your way back. It was difficult at the time. I suppose, hearing loss was probably the least of my problems. At the time, i had a lot of internal injuries, broken bones and it really didnt occur to me that i had suffered much of a head trauma, if any. Yes, that i had suffered much of a head trauma, ifany. Yes, i had broken that i had suffered much of a head trauma, if any. Yes, i had broken my helmet and there was some scar tissue and i spent a month in hospital in china. Gosh. It was in the ensuing couple of months that i started to notice hearing loss and then i suppose i went from having a mild hearing loss and going through to an audiologist and getting it checked out to one morning waking up com pletely checked out to one morning waking up completely and profoundly deaf. Its called sudden sensorineural hearing loss. You have more chance of winning the lottery. Its very rare. Were you still in china . No, i was home at that stage. I had been home but they traced back the cause of the decline in the hearing and sudden sensory loss to an overdose of the antibiotics. How do you get back on your feet from being in that position . Now, you are running a professional cycling team. It is quite phenomenal. Talk us through that process, how did you manage to do that . I had a couple of years where, obviously, with a cochlear implant, its an expensive piece of equipment. You have to go on to a national waiting list, its not something that is available in ireland in the private domain. I was very lucky in working with the National Cochlear implant programme in the Beaumont Hospital and doctor laura of yanni is a pioneer of that research in ireland. They fast track to be under the plan because they realise that as somebody who loses their hearing at midlife, it is very rare, unless you are subject to a work accident or an explosion, Something Like that. Most people will be born deaf or lose their hearing in their elderly age. But in my case, they found that the fastest way to give me the best chance of getting back into the hearing world was to get me into the programme the implant process as quickly as possible into my head. And lets go with the training and rehab from there. With your hearing returning, a new career, he went from competitor to team manager. Yeah. How different are the skills that you need to do that role . |j how different are the skills that you need to do that role . I guess the reasoning behind why i decided to do it was in the rehab programme, obviously, when they turned on the implant, you dont start to hear immediately. You have been without hearing for such a length of time that it hearing for such a length of time thatitis hearing for such a length of time that it is a Rehabilitation Programme that can take years. I was given, i guess, programme that can take years. I was given, iguess, my first few appointments i was up there every second day in the hospital, getting tune in, getting speech therapy, getting Occupational Therapy for months and months. At my progress was so fast and i was willing to work so hard at it that i wanted to see what limit i could push with a cochlear implant and this was great for the National Cochlear implant programme because they were saying this is fantastic that a relatively young quy this is fantastic that a relatively young guy he is trying to push the boundaries of what i copy implant can do. When i went back to it i said, you know, my passion is professional bike racing. 0ne said, you know, my passion is professional bike racing. One of the most difficultjobs and one of the most difficultjobs and one of the most communicative jobs in cycling isa most communicative jobs in cycling is a director sport manager for a cycling team because you are operating on vhf radios, seven riders in every race and each ride is connected via two way radios, you are playing chess on wheels with the tea m are playing chess on wheels with the team and using the riders for the best way possible. It was about pushing the limits of the implant. Did you not think twice about getting on a bike again . It is extremely dangerous. Chris froome and others have been at the end of serious crashes. You must get really nervous when your team is out there, how do you cope with that . Yeah, i guess when you are a racer, you are a racer. Whether you are a team manager or whether you are a rider, you dont think about the risks until they actually happen. 0bviously, until they actually happen. Obviously, you try to prevent them, you dont take chances with guys but at the same time, you have to race. Thats just a built in. At the same time, you have to race. Thatsjust a built in. It at the same time, you have to race. Thats just a built in. It is a built in mechanism we all have, no matter what sport youre in. I guess it was like i didnt really suffer any post trauma from the crash. I had a lot of balance issues, because your hearing system is directly linked to your balance, that was a bit ofan linked to your balance, that was a bit of an issue. But you overcome. Morgan, we really are appreciative of you coming in and telling us your story from a pro cyclist to team manager. Good luck. Good luck to your team. Thank you. At the top of the show, we asked you whats the weirdest or worst questions youve ever been asked in an interview . Lets take a look at how some viewers have responded at one interview i was asked, if i knew what day it was. I had turned up a day early for my interview. Very embarrassing. At least he was early and not late. For a job in it, i was asked if you were an animal what would you be . Ive heard that one before. It was not difficult. Anthony said. I was asked before an interview whether i knew the 1966 fa cup winners. I was told id get the job if so. I did a quick internet search easiest interview ever. Thats not the point. I wouldnt have a clue. Thank you for all your responses to that. Quite an intriguing conversation and a lot more detail on that story. I will retweet jamess article that he put on this is money is that people like a difficult interview and young people want to work for that company because they have been given a tough time. Maybe our age group thinks the com plete time. Maybe our age group thinks the complete opposite maybe we are the snowfla kes complete opposite maybe we are the snowflakes maybe we are. Thank you so much for your company. Join us at this time tomorrow. Thanks for watching. Hi, there, good morning. February was a very wet month, storm after storm, record breaking rainfall, but yesterday, the 1st of march also brought in the first day of meteorological spring. So, daffodils in force for saint davids day. Now, throughout this week, its not going to be as wet as its been recently, sunshine and showers, not quite as windy, but it will feel quite chilly at times with some overnight frosts. Weve got low pressure still to the north of scotland, thats bringing in one weather front here, frequent showers, another weather front down towards the south east of england, some outbreaks of rain across east anglia and the south east at the moment, but that rain will tend to clear away and then for most of england and wales, were looking at some sunny spells. Stilljust the odd shower here and there but frequent showers into the west of scotland, snow is still over the Higher Ground here. Eastern and southern scotland, though, will be just that little bit drier and maximum temperatures today about 7 to 9, maybe 10 degrees. I said its not as windy and thats certainly the case for many parts of england and wales. Scotland, though, still a little bit breezy at times, especially as those showers move their way in. Some fairly high gusts of wind expected here. Through tonight, still some showers across scotland, but they will drift away a bit further south and we could still see a few showers in Northern England, the odd one or two in southern areas as well. Temperatures falling close to freezing, so some frost into tomorrow morning, perhaps also again some ice where weve had some of those showers on untreated roads and pavements. Now, going into tuesday, low pressure is still there, still a weather front bringing further showers across Northern Areas but throughout tuesday, its going to be fairly similar to today. One or two showers around, but some sunny spells expected for many. The most frequent of the showers will be across the west of scotland. Again, there will be some snow over the Higher Ground here. By the afternoon, a lot of those showers tend to clear away, so were looking at lots of sunshine, maximum temperatures again, around about 9, 10 celsius. As we enter the middle part of the week, on wednesday, some uncertainty about some rain which could move its way into southern parts. Further north, more showery conditions. Thursdays looking a little bit drier with some sunny spells but as we go into the end of the week, it might well start to turn a bit more unsettled again. Low pressure moving in, one weather front moving its way through on friday and another one will start to move its way in as we go into the weekend. Thats one thing we are keeping a close eye on. Nothing quite as stormy as its been recently. Bye for now. Youre watching bbc news at 9. The headlines. The Prime Minister will chair a meeting of the governments Emergency Committee this morning, as the number of uk coronavirus cases leaps to 36.
