Its headquarters after a case of coronavirus is confirmed. And in the cross hairs major tech firms are facing investigation over claims theyve been using unfair methods to try to stifle competition. Michelle fleury will bring us the details from new york. And well be focusing on femtech technology aimed at the health and wellbeing of women. And our question who does the most housework in your house . According to a new report, women still do one hour more cleaning and one hour more childcare a day than men. Why is that still the case . Let us know what the picture is in your home. Let us know just use the hashtag bbcworklife. Hello and welcome to worklife. In an increasingly environmentally aware world, oil and Gas Companies may have something of an image problem. In a few hours time the new chief executive of bp, Bernard Looney, is to make a speech where he is expected to set out new targets for making the Company Greener and more sensitive to concerns about Climate Change. Bp is already investing in solar power, wind and hydrogen. The Company Wants to reduce its Carbon Footprint at the same time as continuing to produce oil and gas. What about other oil firms . Shell has been buying Battery Technology businesses and firms that specialise in matching power demand with supply. Meanwhile exxonmobil says it has been investing in research on biofuels. But a study by the think tank, carbon tracker, estimates that oil firms risk wasting 2. 2 trillion by 2030 if governments take a tougher line on carbon emissions. Our Business Editor simon jack joins us now. The last survey i saw was i the last survey i saw was 1 overall of Big Oil Companies spending on clea n of Big Oil Companies spending on clean energy so have they improved a lot in the last few weeks . That will be one of the interesting things when Bernard Looney gets up. The argument is that they spent hundreds of millions in some cases on Renewable Energy and what have you. Bp spent £71 billion on Oil Exploration last year, finding new oil and gas. Thatll be the acid test. Greenpeace and others have said if we are going to hit Climate Change targets you must reduce the amount of oil you are burning every year and stopped looking for any more, at all. Shell is looking at Battery Technology, so they are dividing up. What you will hear today from bp is that they think hydrogen is going to be the future. One of the models you can see of the oil company, Energy Companies they are called now, they will be investing in renewables, and using that Renewable Energy, say offshore wind, to create and generate high ledge in which you can then burn. The by product of Burning Hydrogen is water. The problem is this affects all of our lives, taking the ukfor example, affects all of our lives, taking the uk for example, there are 26 million gas boilers and all of our homes. They need to be modified or replaced. That could cost according to the government £500 million. So, although there has been lot a lot of power generation, electricity, the things we put in our car, the gas that we heat homes and cook with, that we heat homes and cook with, thatis that we heat homes and cook with, that is the toughest nut to crack and there is only limited amounts that someone like bp can do about that. How much pressure are the Energy Companies under given that blackrock, the Worlds Largest fund manager, said sustainability was at the heart of their investment and they are a major investor . In a way they are a major investor . In a way the masters of the universe, blackrock has 7 trillion in investment, legal and general in the uk are seeing the same thing. They are not saying that we will not buy shares in shell, which pays a nice dividend by the way, but they want to see the Senior Management incentivised in different ways, and put climate targets as how they get their bonus, but we are a long way from seeing those Big Companies divest themselves. If we are to be serious about hitting these targets, at some point, there will be a mass exodus, nobody wants to be the last one on the dance floor. And emerging markets still needing lots of carbon. Call markets still needing lots of carbon. all has all but disappeared from Electricity Generation in the uk. China is burning a0 50 of the coal reserves in the road, and they are still building coal fired power station so it is one of those things that ever looked at from the uk point of view, we want to get to net zero by 2050 but we are 1 of world emissions. That sounds like a counsel of despair, but some say we started the industrial revolution, we have a moral duty to show some leadership. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. Japanese car maker nissan has filed a civil lawsuit against its former chairman carlos ghosn. The suit, filed at yokohama district court, seeks an initial amount of 90 million. Mr ghosn is currently in lebanon afterjumping bail injapan, where he faces charges of financial misconduct. The Company Seeks to recover fines it expects to have to pay to regulators due to mr ghosns alleged misconduct. Shares of softbank are surging by as much as 12. 5 after a merger between t mobile and sprint was given the green light by a usjudge. Remember, the Japanese Firm owns sprint. The deal is worth 26 billion and the firms claim this will help reshape the us wireless industry, and build up americas 5g networks. But critics say its only going to lead to higher prices. Us Officials Say Chinese Company huawei builds secret back doors into its hardware that allow it to covertly access mobile phone networks around the world. Washington has long tried to convince its allies, such as the uk and germany, to ban the use of the firms Telecom Equipment in the building of 5g networks. Huawei denies the allegations. Singapore raised its disease outbreak response system condition to orange last week, which essentially means the disease is severe and spreads easily from person to person. The city currently has 47 confirmed cases, most of them ina has 47 confirmed cases, most of them in a stable condition. Thank you, we will keep an eye on that story. A quick look at the markets. Asia pacific rose on wednesday following another positive lead from wall street with Investor Sentiment mixed about the immediate and long term impact of the coronavirus outbreak. The largely positive morning following fresh record closes by the s p 500 and the nasdaq in new york on tuesday. A quick look at european markets. All up slightly. More on the market isa all up slightly. More on the market is a little later. Now to the us, where tech giants including amazon, apple and facebook are facing fresh scrutiny over whether they stifled competition by buying up smaller rivals. Michelle fleury has more from new york. The federal trade commission has asked that biggest names in technology to hand over information about a decade worth of deals. Americas telecoms regulator is trying to understand how giants like amazon and facebook have used acquisitions to become so dominant. If the ftc were to discover anti competitive merger activity in the past, it could lead to action being taken, with the ftc chairjoseph simons telling reporters it could result in unwinding. The request comes as the size, power and Business Practices of big tech are under the microscope, including several government investigations into whether their practices harm competition. Time now for our daily look at some of the newspaper and website stories which have caught our eye. Joining us is writer and journalist, marisa bate. A piece in the guardian about ofcom giving a new role of policing Online Platforms. The government will announce draft legislation suggesting ofcom could have powers and responsibilities over the behaviour of these tech giants. The likes of twitter and facebook. And instagram. We know that there are cou ntless instagram. We know that there are countless problems with harmful material online. The question is what sanctions will ofcom have and what sanctions will ofcom have and what will they do . They are talking about a breach of duty of care, what is that, in this wild west of Online Platforms . We dont have that information yet but it is a huge spectrum. This morning the chief executive said they there would have to be criminal sanctions for serious cases of websites sharing child abuse. We know things like 14 year old Molly Russell committed suicide which her parents believe was aggravated by things you saw on instagram, so theres a spectrum of issues but we dont know how they will tackle it but we know that it needs to be tackled, so having a body in place where this is their responsibility to try and prevent this, because the Tech Companies themselves do not do enough. Detra ctors themselves do not do enough. Detractors say that it could be leading to censorship and the government blocking websites they dont deem acceptable, is that fair . Theres the question of free speech online which will always be a lively and complicated one, but at this stage, the damage especially to young people, that, there has to be some sort of sanctions in place, some sort of sanctions in place, some sort of body protecting young people. Moving on to a story that has got to him quite exercise this morning. Young men embrace gender equality but still do not vacuum. This doesnt fit with anything i know about modern life at all. Talk us know about modern life at all. Talk us through this story. According to the data from gallup, opposite sex couples, they split the house work in the same way that older couples do, and researchers are surprised because whilst attitudes around gender have evolved in other areas such as support for women working and in public office, there seems to be the stubborn idea around gender roles and household. It is significant, one hour a day of more housework and one hour a day of more childcare. It is quite dramatic to shift. It is a lot. You have to think in the uk, as we have an ageing population, that burden of ca re ageing population, that burden of care would just full on child care but for elderly parents. It does replicate what happens in my house, but in your house, you do it all . What i thought was interesting was. Intensive parenting is interesting. Both parties now working, often, people stillspend as much time with their children as they were in the 1970s when there we re they were in the 1970s when there were more stay mums which shows you how much longer the day is, and what youve got to fit into it and why not so much is done in household chores. They asked the question why is this the case, is it because men dont want to do it . They pose the question, and i repeat it, as well there doesnt seem to be any hard and fast rules why this is happening. One researcher suggested that whilst men like the extra income, they dont like doing the chores so whilst there is support for women to work. I live with my boyfriend and i have to say that he does the majority of chores but this is something that i hear from my friends. We have asked viewers to reach out on twitter and tell us their experience. We will read some of them later. Still to come tech for female wellness well talk to the woman who thinks femtech, is going to be the next big thing. Youre with worklife from bbc news. Energy customers will now be entitled to a £30 payment from suppliers if they experience delays or mistakes when switching companies. This follows a change in the rules by the energy regulator, ofgem. Its chief executive mary starks joins us now. Just talk us through these requirements. How many people are falling foul of this . This is a second tranche of requirements that builds on a set of requirements introduced last year. To give you some context around the scale, so far weve seen suppliers pay out £700,000 to customers since the requirements were introduced last may. That set against a backdrop of around 6. 4 million household switching supplier last year. So for the vast majority of people who choose to change supplier it goes without a hitch. For a small minority, they experience problems and delays and thats not good enough so we are trying to clamp down on that today. What kind of impact do you think this will have and how many will fall foul of it . Be what if you have two impact, to give customers peace of mind that if something goes wrong, not only will it be put right what theyll be compensated, and we wanted to pose a challenge to suppliers to get this stuff right first time so it happens less frequently in future. What reaction have you had from Energy Companies . Theyve been nervous about the details but they are broadly supportive of the idea that you should be able to vote with your feetin you should be able to vote with your feet in this market and it should be a smooth process that works and possibly, you should feel confident to shop around for good deals. Possibly, you should feel confident to shop around for good dealsm the fine, 35, enough, do you think . Its a proportionate amount to the hassle involved. It is certainly enough to make suppliers focus on ironing out these gremlins in the system and making sure that it works well, and it is enough to give customers a little bit of Something Back if they experience problems and delays. Thank you for talking to us. There is more detail on our website. Also a story about nissan seeking 90 million in damages from former boss, carlos cussons. And we have some detail on how he managed to escape from japan, something that has intrigued us all, carlos ghosn. Youre watching worklife. A reminder of our top story bp gets ready to outline plans to make its business kinder to the environment. Its the latest energy giant to announce measures aimed at reflecting growing concern about global warming. Now, youve probably heard the term tech, referring to technologies developed based on scientific innovation. But little is known of the term, femtech which is short for female technology and refers to products, apps and hardware designed to help Womens Health and wellbeing. Well, its now a booming market and many firms are taking advantage of the sector. One of them is the uk brand elvie. Founded in 2013, it makes Smart Devices such as breast pumps and pelvic trainers. Its chief executive, tania bolerjoins us now. Good to have you with us, thank you for coming in. Tell us how you came up for coming in. Tell us how you came up with this company, the idea for this. I started elvie six years ago. I saw this. I started elvie six years ago. Isawa this. I started elvie six years ago. I saw a problem that needed to be solved and the best way to solve it was technology. And the problem was pelvic floor health, i came from a Public Health background, and was fascinated with bringing about Health Change and after going through pregnancy i realise that simple things about being a woman are completely neglected by technology. At the time best in class was going to hospital, having a tortuous machine hooked up to a screen as you exercise a tortuous machine hooked up to a screen as you exercise your a tortuous machine hooked up to a screen as you exercise your pelvic floor and you can see in real time how you were doing, so we took that horrible medical device and turned it into something that women would like to use at home at more than that it like to use at home at more than thatitis like to use at home at more than that it is actually fun, five minute workouts, and it is better than what exists in hospital and available on the nhs now. You are dealing with something that would have been to boo, tackling that taboo. How did you get funding for this . That would have been taboo. Did you go to the nhs or seek private capital . Would have been taboo. Did you go to the nhs or seek private capital7m the nhs or seek private capital7m the beginning was hard. With connected devices, it is hard to get the economic right, it is an intimate product that goes inside the body. What started was winning a £100,000 research and Development Grant from the government and it was enough for me to believe that this crazy idea had real validity in it so crazy idea had real validity in it soi crazy idea had real validity in it so i quit myjob. Then we got £2 million of interim investment. Everybody told us that we were crazy but we have taken on board the advice that we would not make a profit, and we channelled back into showing everybody that they were wrong. We launched on retail, and we launched a breast pump and raised over 42 million through that. Things are now fantastic. After we launched that product, i realised that all of Womens Health was ignored. A lot of people might not recognise the idea. And where is the noise and this . It is completely silent. A horrible device, so again, the fact that Womens Health had devices that were painful, noisy and difficult to use, so we thought, could be completely redefined it . So thatis could be completely redefined it . So that is it, it is silent, you put it in your bra. The other ones, they make you feel like a cow, they are noisy and uncomfortable, so this is revolutionising that. When you launched this product, the pelvic floor exercise, it is a taboo subject, something that women dont really talk about, the issue of the pelvic floor and incontinence, which happens to a lot of women later on in life whether you have had children or not, so how did you get over that barrier, that kind of yuk factor . Rather than placing it as a traditional medical device we put it in pilates studios, beauty retailers, talking about inner strength, core strength, because the Technology Makes the experience more positive, women share. If you give women a solution to their problems they will talk. And weve had huge celebrity endorsements. And for the breast pump as well, it allows women, this is an empowering product. We have women running marathons, doing their day to day jobs whilst pumping, and they do share. And you have r d input, what else are you bringing to market . Everything from mensuration, fertility, pregnancy, menopause are being ignored and can be improved through technology so we have set up a r d facility in bristol and we are launching new products this year. Anything for men . Men can come next. There is enough for you guys thank you for coming as coming in and telling us about it, thank you. Some responses to oui telling us about it, thank you. Some responses to our twitter question today. That is the story of bradley woodhouse. In his early twenties, he thought there was only one aim in business to make money. But then he fell ill from brain cancer and came close to death. He says the experience showed him his true mission in life finding a business to help other people who are recovering from illnesses. After having survived brain cancer, i wanted to start a business that really gave me a purpose in life. At 23 years old i was diagnosed with a really malignant brain cancer which resulted in me having four brain operations in the space of two months. Post that, i had to kind of rebuild from a zero base, both mentally and physically. When i was in post recovery, people came to me, probably 8 10 people, saying brad, how did you eat . How did you exercise . What was your mental state . What was your physical state . And it was in those moments that i realised there was this gulf in the information that was available to people. So i set up my company, and i wanted this to be a platform where people could access occupational therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and provide them with information that helps them recover, as people do. Especially with Mental Health disorders. Before my illness, i didnt really have an objective or goal of what i wanted to achieve. Whereas now i am able to fulfil needs. To identify that world and what it is trying to achieve has given me a complete purpose in life. At the top of the show, we asked you who does the housework in your home. It has got him quite irritated. A new report showed that women do one more hour of cleaning and childcare a day. But not in your house i dont recognise those figures lets see how you have been reacting. Ken scott, kerry says. It isjust me and my dad, and we divide the housework. Sometimes it is more fun to cook. I think ithink in i think in my house it definitely is not an equal divide. Interesting to hear some of your views. Keep them coming in, because there are lots of people who disagree with this research. Interestingly it is the 2034 research. Interestingly it is the 20 34 category who are not changing, interestingly. If people have children they spend more time in childcare and doing things with children than stay at home mums did in the 1970s are cramming much more into their lives. Anyway, i will speak to your husband and get some tips from him maybe he will get some tips from you thats it from worklife today. Goodbye. There is more disruptive weather in this forecast.
