I Tech Giant Google is on trial this week after the Usjustice Department brought a claim against the company, stating they used their power to monopolise Online Search services. The us argues, google unlawfully stifled competition, by paying billions of dollars to ensure its Search Engine would be the default on most phones and web browsers. Google insists, it did not violate anti trust laws. Today, a us District Courtjudge for the District Of Columbia began hearing the case. Im joined now by our North America correspondent Nomia Iqbal Just tell us more about this case. The us governments have for years been trying to reign in big tech and this is the big moment. The department ofjustice has taken google to court. They argue that google to court. They argue that google has been using illegally its Market Muscle to try and stifle the competition. So basically when it comes to the Search Engine that google is the one that is dominant and its stifled all the other competition and the Department Of Justice say the way they have done thatis justice say the way they have done that is by making exclusive deals with Companies Like apple so that it becomes the default Search Engine on your mobile phone or tablet. The opening arguments are under way but whats interesting as well is that they have cited this data which has come from a Data Analysis firm accusing google of amassing 90 of the Search Engine market in the us and 91 globally. So pretty astonishing figures. Google is saying thats not true, the deals we have with apple and samsung are not exclusive. Users can change the default Search Engine if they want to. And if they dont google argues its because we are the ones that serve up the best relevant searches for people. It also disputes that 90 figure saying there are other platforms like amazon and tiktok which is competition for this so they dont think in the wider context that rings true. It is a big trial in the sense that if google loses it could have huge repercussions for the company. Its going to last at least ten weeks so we wont get a verdict until next year and its a bench trial not a iury year and its a bench trial not a jury one which means a judge will deliver the final verdict. You talked about deliver the final verdict. You talked about the deliver the final verdict. You talked about the significance of the trial. There is a huge amount at stake potentially if google were to lose. 0ne stake potentially if google were to lose. One of the options is to break up lose.
